Research on the Desired Dynamic Selection of a Reference Model-Based PID Controller: A Case Study on a High-Pressure Heater in a 600 MW Power Plant
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: coal-fired power plant, desired dynamic selection, PID, reference model
Nowadays, the proportional−integral−derivative (PID) controller dominates industrial process control. Because of the compromise between parameters, its tuning is still a challenge for practitioners. A reference model (RM)-based PID controller—the desired dynamic equational (DDE) PID controller—is regarded as a viable alternative since it can readily eliminate the compromise. However, how to design its desired dynamic equation remains an unsolved problem which limits the application of DDE PID controllers in large-scale industrial systems. Therefore, this paper studies the desired dynamic selection of DDE PID controllers and proposes a simple and practical selection procedure without using the accurate plant model. Simulations, experiments and filed tests demonstrate the convenience and advantages of the proposed method, thus making DDE PID an effective controller type which is specifically appealing to engineers. Moreover, the successful application of DDE PID controllers to a high-pre... [more]

A Bearing Fault Diagnosis Method Based on Spectrum Map Information Fusion and Convolutional Neural Network
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bearing fault diagnosis, CNN, STFT
With the development of information technology, it has become increasingly important to use intelligent algorithms to diagnose mechanical equipment faults based on vibration signals of rolling bearings. However, with the application of high-performance sensors in the Internet of Things, the complexity of real-time classification of multichannel, multidimensional sensor signals is increasing. In view of the need for intelligent methods for fault diagnosis methods of mechanical equipment, the generalization ability of fault diagnosis models also needs to be further strengthened. In this context, in order to make fault diagnosis intelligent and efficient, a bearing fault diagnosis method based on spectrum map information fusion and convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed. First, short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is used to analyze the multichannel vibration signal of the rolling bearing and obtain the frequency domain information of the signal over a period of time. Second, the i... [more]

Inline Weld Depth Evaluation and Control Based on OCT Keyhole Depth Measurement and Fuzzy Control
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fuzzy control, inline weld depth control, inline weld depth evaluation, laser beam welding, Machine Learning, optical coherence tomography, wavelet transformation
In an industrial joining process, exemplified by deep penetration laser beam welding, ensuring a high quality of welds requires a great effort. The quality cannot be fully established by testing, but can only be produced. The fundamental requirements for a high weld seam quality in laser beam welding are therefore already laid in the process, which makes the use of control systems essential in fully automated production. With the aid of process monitoring systems that can supply data inline to a production process, the foundation is laid for the efficient and cycle-time-neutral control of welding processes. In particular, if novel, direct measurement methods, such as Optical Coherence Tomography, are used for the acquisition of direct geometric quantities, e.g., the weld penetration depth, a significant control potential can be exploited. In this work, an inline weld depth control system based on an OCT keyhole depth measurement is presented. The system is capable of automatically exec... [more]

Continuous Nonsingular Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Control for Speed Tracking of PMSM Based on Finite Time Disturbance Observer
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: continuous fast terminal sliding mode, disturbance observer, finite-time convergence, permanent magnet synchronous motor
A continuous nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode (CNFTSM) control strategy with an automated double power reaching law is proposed to improve the performance of speed dynamic response and accuracy tracking for the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) servo system. In pursuit of robustness against system uncertainties, a finite-time convergent extended state observer (ESO) is designed to estimate external disturbances, parameter variation, and unmodeled dynamics as a feedforward compensation to the output feedback control system. The developed controller, based on Lyapunov stability theory analysis, can guarantee finite time stability from any initial state in the presence of internal and external disturbances. The modified sliding mode reaching law can achieve enough convergence rate compared with the exponential reaching law, and the inherent chattering of sliding mode is reduced when system states approach the equilibrium point. Theoretical analysis and simulation results dem... [more]

Recent Developments in Tuning Methods for Predictive Functional Control
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: challenging dynamics, predictive control, stability properties, tuning
Predictive functional control (PFC) is a popular alternative to PID because it exploits model information better and enables systematic constraint handling while also being cheap and computationally efficient. A recent overview paper reviewed some recent proposals for improving the tuning efficacy. This paper extends and develops upon that review paper by introducing some exciting new proposals for how to making tuning more intuitive and, thus, easier for unskilled operators. Moreover, there are early indications that these proposals are easily modified for use in nonlinear cases while maintaining a very low cost and a simple and fast online computation.

A Novel Back-Stepping Sliding Mode Control Strategy of Direct-Drive Wave Energy Converters
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: back-stepping sliding mode control, direct-drive wave energy converters, permanent magnet linear generator, wave energy tracking
In this paper, a maximum energy extraction and tracking strategy for direct-drive wave energy converters (DDWECs) based on back-stepping and sliding mode control strategies are developed. It is well known that the existence of the chattering phenomenon degrades the control performance of conventional sliding mode control (SMC). To mitigate the effects of flutter and external disturbances, a back-stepping sliding model control (BSMC) scheme is proposed. The main features of the proposed methodology are as follows: (1) By using the proposed BSMC, the maximum wave energy of DDWEC can be captured. Moreover, the speed tracking of the permanent magnet linear generator (PMLG), which is a subsystem of DDWEC, tracked in real-time. (2) By virtue of the proposed BSMC, the closed-loop control system is asymptotically stable in finite time. (3) With the superior controllability of the BSMC, it can handle disturbances that the SMC cannot handle. Comprehensive and comparative studies are proved to be... [more]

Research on Mobile Machinery NOx Emission Control Based on a Physical Model and Closed-Loop Control
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: closed-loop control, emission control, heat and mass transfer, mobile machinery, selective catalytic reduction
Mobile machinery means a power-driven vehicle that is specifically designed and constructed to perform work on or off the road. To reduce the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions that come from mobile machinery, a combination of a physical model and closed-loop control is applied to the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. Based on the design of the variable cross-section extended exhaust structure, the differential pressure measurement was achieved, and the physical model of the exhaust flow based on the differential pressure was established. Based on the analysis of the heat and mass transfer process of the SCR catalyst, a prediction model for the internal temperature field of the catalyst was established by combining the upstream and downstream exhaust temperature sensors. Using the SCR downstream nitrogen oxides signal and the proportional−integral−derivative (PID) closed-loop control algorithm, segmented PID closed-loop control under the large hysteresis response of the SCR syste... Predictive Control in Water Distribution Systems for Leak Reduction and Pressure Management via a Pressure Reducing Valve
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control valves, leak reduction, pipelines, pressure management, water distribution system
This work proposes a model predictive control (MPC) strategy for pressure management and leakage reduction in a water distribution system (WDS). Unlike most of the reported models that mainly consider EPANET-based models, the proposed method considers its dynamic representation given by ordinary differential equations. The proposed MPC uses a pressure-reducing valve (PRV) as a control element to regulate the pressure in the WDS to track the demand. The control scheme proposes a strategy to manage the high nonlinearity of the PRV and takes into account the demand profile throughout the day as well as the leaks that occur in the pipeline. The estimates of magnitude and location of the leak are provided by an Extended Kalman Filter from previous work and with the aid of a rule-based set point manager reduces the fluid loss in the event of a leak. Different scenarios are studied to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control system, achieving an approximate reduction of up to 5% o... [more]

Active and Passive Defense Strategies of Cyber-Physical Power System against Cyber Attacks Considering Node Vulnerability
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cyber-physical power system, defense strategy, false node, vulnerability assessment
Vulnerable parts in the cyber-physical power system can be maliciously attacked to trigger cascading failures. This paper proposes a defense framework with active and passive defense hybrid strategies. First, a comprehensive vulnerability assessment index is presented to identify vital nodes contributing to failure extension. The proposed index is based on both physical characteristics and topology. Physical characteristic is assessed through the optimal power flow to calculate the load losses. The topology index is obtained by the attacking node and calculating the nodes lost at the steady state. Then, the active and passive defense strategies are established. Deploying false nodes based on the comprehensive vulnerability index is set as the active defense strategy. Changing from centralized control mode to centralized-distributed control mode is the passive defense strategy. The system can defend against attacks with active and passive strategies effectively in the attacking experime... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: 1D CNN, condition-based maintenance (CBM), fault diagnosis, fault simulation database
Maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS) are proposed as a future technology of the maritime industry. One of the key technologies for the development of MASS is condition-based maintenance (CBM) based on prognostics and health management (PHM). The CBM technology can be used for early detection of abnormalities based on the database and for a prediction of the fault occurring in the future. However, this technology has a problem that requires a high-quality database that reproduces the operation state of the actual ships and quantitatively and systematically indicates the characteristics for the various fault state of the device. To solve this problem, this paper presents a study on the development method of the fault database based on the reliability. Firstly, the reliability analysis of the target device was performed to select five types of the core fault modes. After that, a fault simulation scenario that defined the fault simulation test methodology was drawn. A land-based testbe... [more]

Pareto Optimal Strategy under H∞ Constraint for Discrete-Time Stochastic Systems
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: discrete-time stochastic systems, generalized difference Riccati equations, indefinite LQ control, Pareto optimality, worst-case disturbance
This paper investigates the Pareto optimal strategy of discrete-time stochastic systems under H∞ constraint, in which the weighting matrices of the weighted sum cost function can be indefinite. Combining the H∞ control theory with the indefinite LQ control theory, the generalized difference Riccati equations (GDREs) are obtained. By means of the solution of the GDREs, the Pareto optimal strategy with H∞ constraint is derived, and the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the strategy are presented. Then the Pareto optimal solution under the worst-case disturbance is solved. Finally, the efficiency of the obtained results is illustrated by a numerical example.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: CO2 displacement seal gas escape, flow control limit systems, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), plugging limits, segment plug combination
CO2 displacement is an important technology to reduce emissions and improve crude oil recovery, as well as prevent CO2 escape. Effective storage is key to the successful implementation of this technology, especially for medium and high permeability reservoirs. The current flow control systems that are applied to seal gas escape are mainly gas/water alternation, CO2 foam, and CO2 foam gel, but there is no clear understanding of the plugging limits of various flow control systems and the mechanism of their combined use of residual oil. Therefore, in this paper, a series of core replacement experiments are conducted for different flow control systems and their combinations. The quantitative characterization of the core pore size distribution before and after the replacement is carried out using the NMR technique to try and determine the plugging limits of different plugging systems, and to investigate the residual oil utilization patterns of self-designed flow control system combinations... February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: autonomous driving, event-triggered scheme, false data injection attacks, security control
This paper presents a Sigmoid-like event-triggered scheme (Sigmoid-like ETS) for security cruise control systems (CCSs) under stochastic false data injection (FDI) attacks. In order to improve the sensitivity of the ETS, a Sigmoid-like function is first proposed to adjust the event-triggered threshold, dynamically. In what follows, by considering a class of stochastic FDI attacks which obey Bernoulli distribution, the Sigmoid-like event-triggered security control strategy is proposed to ensure both the security and resource saving of the CCSs. Thus, a sufficient stability and stabilization criterion is well derived to present the co-design of an H∞ control and event-triggered parameter. Finally, some simulation experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed Sigmoid-like event-triggered security cruise control for networked vehicles.

In order to further improve the stability of path tracking control and fuel economy of new energy vehicles, an optimal control strategy of path tracking and braking energy recovery is proposed. First, a model predictive controller is designed based on the three-degrees of freedom dynamics model of the vehicle according to the idea of hierarchical control, and a fuzzy yaw torque controller is established with the desired yaw velocity and side slip angle of the mass center as constraints. Second, at high-speed driving conditions, the executive layer of the component distributes the braking torque according to the braking energy recovery control strategy. Finally, the optimal control strategy of path tracking and braking energy recovery is verified by Carsim/Advisor/Simulink software under different driving speeds. The results show that the optimized control strategy can improve the tracking accuracy and driving stability of a vehicle with large curvature turning and further improve the f... [more]

Keywords: activated carbon, chemical activation, cow manure, high surface area, pretreatment conditions
In this study, methods of adding value to cow manure were studied. Due to the properties of cow manure, activated carbon with a high surface area can only be produced by increasing the fixed carbon ratio and removing the ash content. Activated carbon was fabricated using five different treatments: (1) raw material−chemical activation, (2) raw material−hydrothermal carbonization−chemical activation, (3) raw material−hydrothermal carbonization−chemical activation−acid washing, (4) raw material−hydrothermal carbonization−heat treatment−chemical activation, and (5) raw material−hydrothermal carbonization−chemical activation−acid washing. The products then underwent proximate, elementary, and surface area analyses. In addition, changes in activated carbon properties depending on the heat treatment temperature (300, 500, 700 °C) and the applied chemical activator ratios (1:1−1:3) were examined. The results showed that the best heat treatment temperature was 300 °C, and the cow manure to chem... [more]

A Fuzzy System Based Iterative Learning Control for Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems with Iteration-Varying Uncertainties
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fuzzy system, iteration-varying, iterative learning control, nonlinear systems
In this paper, we consider an iterative learning control problem for a class of unknown discrete-time nonlinear systems with iteration-varying initial error, iteration-varying system parameters, iteration-varying external disturbance, iteration-varying desired output, and iteration-varying control direction. These iteration-varying uncertainties are not required to take any particular structure such as the high-order internal model and only need to satisfy certain boundedness conditions. We propose an iterative learning control law with an adaptive iteration-varying fuzzy system to overcome all the uncertainties and achieve the learning control objective. Furthermore, we present a sufficient condition for designing adaptive gains and prove the convergence of the learning error to a small value as the trial number is large enough. Finally, we use two simulation examples to demonstrate all the theoretical results.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: exponentially stable, state feedback control, strict-feedback nonlinear systems, time delay
This paper considers the exponential stabilization problem for a class of strict-feedback nonlinear systems with multiple time-varying delays, whose nonlinear terms satisfy the linear growth condition. The state feedback controller that relies on a positive parameter to be determined is constructed to deal with nonlinear terms. By tactfully introducing the Lyapunov−Krasovskii functional with an exponential function and selecting the applicable parameter to be determined, the implementable state feedback controller can be obtained to guarantee that the closed-loop system is exponentially stable. The proposed state feedback control scheme is finally applied to the control design of two-stage chemical reactor system, which illustrates the effectiveness of the control method.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fractional order, hyperchaotic complex system, tracking control
Hyperchaotic complex behaviors often occur in nature. Some chaotic behaviors are harmful, while others are beneficial. As for harmful behaviors, we hope to transform them into expected behaviors. For beneficial behaviors, we want to enhance their chaotic characteristics. Aiming at the harmful hyperchaotic complex system, a tracking controller was designed to produce the hyperchaotic complex system track common expectation system. We selected sine function, constant, and complex Lorenz chaotic system as target systems and verified the effectiveness by mathematical proof and simulation experiments. Aiming at the beneficial hyperchaotic complex phenomenon, this paper extended the hyperchaotic complex system to the fractional order because the fractional order has more complex dynamic characteristics. The influences order change and parameter change on the evolution process of the system were analyzed and observed by MATLAB simulation.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: common-mode voltage, H8, leakage current, Model Predictive Control, photovoltaic, transformerless inverter, weak grid
There is increasing utilization of photovoltaic (PV) grid-connected systems in modern power networks. Currently, PV grid-connected systems utilize transformerless inverters that have the advantages of being low cost, low weight, a small size, and highly efficient. Unfortunately, these inverters have an earth leakage current problem due to the absence of galvanic isolation. This phenomenon represents safety and electrical problems for those systems. Recently, the H8 transformerless inverter was introduced to eliminate the earth leakage current. The present study proposes improving the performance of an H8 transformerless inverter using model predictive control (MPC). The inverter was supplied by PV energy and attached to the grid through an LCL filter. During system modeling, the grid weakness was identified. The discrete model of the overall system, including the PV panel, the boost converter, the H8 transformerless inverter, and the controllers, was derived. Then, the introduced H8 tr... [more]

Real-Time Diagnosis and Fault-Tolerant Control of a Sensor Single Fault Based on a Data-Driven Feedforward-Feedback Control System
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: data-driven, fault diagnosis, fault-tolerant control, signal processing
Fault diagnosis is studied based on the system type, which facilitates the realization of the engineering configuration and improves the diagnosis efficiency. The fault-tolerant control method is unified based on the concept of fault compensation. According to the dynamic characteristics of the system, the method takes the boundary value of no-fault signal fluctuation as the basis for fault detection, then takes the changing intensity of the solenoid valve control signal after the fault occurs as the fault location basis. Finally, it takes the difference or ratio of the signals before and after the fault occurs as the fault estimation. For the basis of fault separation, the integral value of the fitting equation between the fault signal and time is used as the Eigenvalue of fault type separation to comprehend fault separation. A program is written in C++ and combined with MATLAB/S-Fun function to realize fault tolerance. At the same time, the dynamic model calibration and real-time fau... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: consensus protocol, economic dispatch, event-triggered, frequency regulator, time-varying topology
The paper studies a new distributed control method to solve the economic dispatch problem (EDP) under directed topology based on consensus protocol. Electrical equipment is closely related to frequency, and the frequency of each generator varies independently during operation. Therefore, it hinders the realization of economic dispatch. Meanwhile, considering the problem of excessive communication cost and low computational efficiency in large-scale power systems, an event-triggered mechanism is introduced into the designed algorithm. Furthermore, in order to overcome the unexpected loss of communication links, the time-varying topology mechanism is employed to develop the distributed economic dispatch (DED) algorithm to improve the robustness.
