Xiaoyue Zhu, Bo Gao, Xudong Yang, Zhong Yu, Ji Ni
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: field test, hot summer and warm winter zone, passive energy-saving design, residential buildings
In China, a surging urbanization highlights the significance of building energy conservation. However, most building energy-saving schemes are designed solely in compliance with prescriptive codes and lack consideration of the local situations, resulting in an unsatisfactory effect and a waste of funds. Moreover, the actual effect of the design has yet to be thoroughly verified through field tests. In this study, a method of modifying conventional building energy-saving design based on research into the local climate and residents’ living habits was proposed, and residential buildings in Panzhihua, China were selected for trial. Further, the modification scheme was implemented in an actual project with its effect verified by field tests. Research grasps the precise climate features of Panzhihua, which was previously not provided, and concludes that Panzhihua is a hot summer and warm winter zone. Accordingly, the original internal insulation was canceled, and the shading performance of... [more]

Florian Julian Lugauer, Josef Kainz, Matthias Gaderer
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: annual annuity, micro-hydro pump storage, operating strategies, pump as turbine, simulation model
Storage technologies are an increasingly crucial element in the continued expansion of renewable energy production. Micro-hydro storage using a pump as a turbine is a potentially promising solution in certain cases, for example, for extending existing photovoltaic systems (PV) and thus reducing grid load and enabling economically beneficial self-consumption of the energy produced. This paper gives an overview of various operating strategies and their technical and economic efficiencies. The evaluation was based on a simulation model of a system that uses measured characteristic maps of both the pump and turbine operations. An optimizer was employed to vary the essential system parameters, which made it possible to determine the optimal economical operation of the pump as a turbine in combination with a PV system. This in turn enabled us to determine the conditions under which the system can be operated most profitably. It was then possible to make precise calculations of the stored ene... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bond graph method, energy management strategy, extended-range fuel cell electric vehicle, hardware-in-the-loop
In view of the aggravation of global pollution and greenhouse effects, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) have attracted increasing attention, owing to their ability to release zero emissions. Extended-range fuel cell vehicles (E-RFCEVs) are the most widely used type of fuel cell vehicles. The powertrain system of E-RFCEV is relatively complex. Bond graph theory was used to model the important parts of the E-RFCEV powertrain system: Battery, motor, fuel cell, DC/DC, vehicle, and driver. In order to verify the control effect of energy management strategy (EMS) in a real-time state, bond graph theory was applied to hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) development. An HiL simulation test-bed based on the bond graph model was built, and the HiL simulation verification of the energy management strategy was completed. Based on the comparison to a power-following EMS, it was found that fuzzy logic EMS is more adaptive to vehicle driving conditions. This study aimed to apply bond graph theory to HiL si... [more]

Keywords: CO2 sorption, divided section packing, jet fuel production, potassium-promoted hydrotalcite, Power-to-Liquid, sorption-enhanced water-gas shift reaction, synthesis gas production
A sorption-enhanced water-gas shift (SEWGS) system providing CO2-free synthesis gas (CO + H2) for jet fuel production from pure CO was studied. The water-gas shift (WGS) reaction was catalyzed by a commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst and carried out with in-situ CO2 removal on a 20 wt% potassium-promoted hydrotalcite-derived sorbent. Catalyst activity was investigated in a fixed bed tubular reactor. Different sorbent materials and treatments were characterized by CO2 chemisorption among other analysis methods to choose a suitable sorbent. Cyclic breakthrough tests in an isothermal packed bed microchannel reactor (PBMR) were performed at significantly lower modified residence times than those reported in literature. A parameter study gave an insight into the effect of pressure, adsorption feed composition, desorption conditions, as well as reactor configuration on breakthrough delay and adsorbed amount of CO2. Special attention was paid to the steam content. The significance of water durin... [more]

Giada Giuffrida, Maurizio Detommaso, Francesco Nocera, Rosa Caponetto
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bioclimatic strategies, cooling load, optimisation, rammed earth construction
The renewed attention paid to raw earth construction in recent decades is linked to its undoubted sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and low embodied energy. In Italy, the use of raw earth as a construction material is limited by the lack of a technical reference standard and is penalised by the current energy legislation for its massive behaviour. Research experiences, especially transoceanic, on highly performative contemporary buildings made with natural materials show that raw earth can be used, together with different types of reinforcements, to create safe, earthquake-resistant, and thermally efficient buildings. On the basis of experimental data of an innovative fibre-reinforced rammed earth material, energy analyses are developed on a rammed earth building designed for a Mediterranean climate. The paper focuses on the influences that different design solutions, inspired by traditional bioclimatic strategies, and various optimised wall constructions have in the improvement of t... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air speed, air velocity, ceiling diffuser, hot-sphere anemometer, jet spread, radial wall jet, velocity decay, virtual origin
The knowledge of the air velocity distribution in the supply jets is essential when designing ventilation and air conditioning systems. In this study, we tested and analyzed the velocity distributions in the radial wall jets—these jets are commonly used in ventilated rooms. Tests included jets from two ceiling diffusers of different constructions, at three airflow rates. The mean air speed distributions were measured with a 16-channel hot-sphere anemometer both in the self-similarity zone and in the terminal zone. A specially developed method of converting the mean speed to mean velocity was used. The measurement results show that the spread coefficients of the jets from both diffusers were the same, but the positions of the virtual origin were different. Due to the friction of the jet with the ceiling and the transfer of momentum to the recirculating flows, the momentum flux in the self-similarity zone decreased by up to 50%. An improved method for calculating velocity distributions i... [more]

Andrea Aquino, Pietro Poesio
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: drying, energy analysis, exergy analysis, multiphase model, multispecies model, thermodynamics
The design of a convective drying cycle could be challenging because its thermodynamic performance depends on a wide range of operating parameters. Further, the initial product properties and environmental conditions fluctuate during the production, affecting the final product quality, environmental impact, and energy usage. An off-design analysis distinguishes the effects of different parameters defining the setup with the best and more stable performance. This study analyzes a reference scenario configured as an existing system and three system upgrades to recover the supplied energy and avoid heat and air dumping in the atmosphere. We calculate their performance for different seasons, initial product moisture, input/output rate, and two products. The analysis comprises 16 simulation cases, the solutions of a two-phase multispecies Euler−Euler model that simulates the thermodynamic equilibrium in all components. Results discuss the combination of parameters that maximizes the evapora... [more]

Faisal Albatati, Alaa Attar
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy balance of thermoelectric generator, thermal design of thermoelectric system, waste heat recovery system
Nearly 70% of the energy produced from automotive engines is released to the atmosphere in the form of waste energy. The recovery of this energy represents a vital challenge to engine designers primarily when a thermoelectric generator (TEG) is used, where the availability of a continuous, steady-state temperature and heat flow is essential. The potential of semi-truck engines presents an attractive application as many coaches and trucks are roaming motorways at steady-state conditions most of the time. This study presents an analytical thermal design and an experimental validation of the TEG system for waste heat recovery from the exhaust of semi-truck engines. The TEG system parameters were optimized to achieve the maximum power output. Experimental work was conducted on a specially constructed setup to validate the analytically obtained results. Both analytical and experimental results were found to be in good agreement with a marginal deviation, indicating the excellent accuracy of... [more]

Keywords: energy management, levelized cost of electricity, microgrid, nature-inspired optimization algorithm, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, rural electrification
The present work investigates the techno-economic solution that can address the problem of rural electrification. To maintain a continuous power supply to this village area, a grid-connected microgrid system was designed that consists of solar photovoltaic (SPV) and battery energy storage systems (BESS). The recently introduced multi-strategy fusion artificial bee colony (MFABC) algorithm was hybridized with the simulated annealing approach and is referred to as the MFABC+ algorithm. This was employed to determine the optimal sizing of different components comprising the integrated system as well as to maximize the techno-economic objectives. For validation, the simulation results obtained by the MFABC+ algorithm are compared with the results obtained using HOMER software, the particle swarm optimization algorithms and the original MFABC algorithm. It was revealed that the MFABC+ algorithm has a better convergence rate and the potential ability to provide compromising results in compar... [more]

Keywords: high power density, magnetic integration, phase shift full-bridge converter
In this study, an optimization procedure was proposed for the magnetic component of an integrated transformer applied in a center-tap phase-shifted full-bridge converter. To accommodate high power−density 0demand, a transformer and an output inductor were integrated into a magnetic component to reduce the volume of the magnetic material and the primary and secondary windings of the transformer were wound on the magnetic legs to reduce conduction loss attributable to the alternating-current resistor. With a focus on the integrated transformer applied in a phase-shifted full-bridge converter, circuit operation in each time interval was analyzed, and a design procedure was established for the integrated magnetic component. In addition, the manner in which output inductance was affected by the mutual inductance between the transformer and the output inductor in the integrated transformer during various operation intervals was discussed and, to minimize circuit loss, a design optimization p... April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: box strength, corrugated board buckling, laboratory tests, McKee formula, openings, orthotropic panels, ventilation holes
This paper presents mixed analytical/numerical method for estimating the static top-to-bottom compressive strength of corrugated packaging with different ventilation openings and holes, in which the torsional and shear stiffness of corrugated cardboard as well as the panel depth-to-width ratio are included. Analytical framework bases on Heimerls assumption with a modification to a critical force, which is here computed by a numerical algorithm. The proposed method is compared herein with the successful McKee formula and is verified with the large number of experiment results of various packaging designs made of different qualities of corrugated cardboard. The results show that, for various hole dimensions or location of openings in no-flap and flap boxes, the estimation error may be reduced up to three times than in the simple analytical approach.

Keywords: low cost digester, psychrophilic anaerobic digestion, thermal behavior
Most biogas plants in the world run under psychrophilic conditions and are operated by small and medium farmers. There is a gap of knowledge on the performance of these systems after several years of operation. The aim of this research is to provide a complete evaluation of a psychrophilic, low-cost, tubular digester operated for eight years. The thermal performance was monitored for 50 days, and parameters such as pH, total volatile fatty acid (tVFA), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and volatile solids (VS) were measured every week for the influent and effluent. The digester operated at a stabilized slurry temperature of around 17.7 °C, with a mean organic load rate (OLR) equal to 0.52 kg VS/m3digester *d and an estimated hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 25 days. The VS reduction in the digester was around 77.58% and the COD reduction was 67 ± 3%, with a mean value for the effluent of 3.31 ± 1.20 g COD/Lt, while the tVFA decreased by 83.6 ± 15.5% and the presence of coliforms decreased... Dawid Szwarc, Karolina Szwarc
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, lignocellulose, methane fermentation, PEF, pulsed electric field
Some types of biomass require great inputs to guarantee high conversion rates to methane. The complex structure of lignocellulose impedes its penetration by cellulolytic enzymes, as a result of which a longer retention time is necessary to increase the availability of nutrients. To use the full biogas potential of lignocellulosic substrates, a substrate pretreatment is necessary before the proper methane fermentation. This article discusses the impact of the pretreatment of maize silage with a pulsed electric field on biogas productivity. The experiment showed a slight decrease in cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin content in the substrate following pretreatment with a pulsed electric field, which resulted in a higher carbohydrate content in the liquid substrate fraction. The highest biogas production output was obtained for the pretreated sample at the retention time of 180 s for 751.97 mL/g volatile solids (VS), which was approximately 14% higher than for the control sample. The met... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacitance, DC-link capacitor, dielectric thickness, equivalent series resistance (ESR), thermal conductivity, thermal resistance
With the rapid development of ecofriendly cars, various inverters are also being developed depending on the performance of motors. The DC-link capacitor is used as an inverter component; however, there are several limitations on its size, such as the requirement for wide films. Film width is a major factor that affects the capacitor’s equivalent series resistance (ESR) and is closely related to heat generation. When the temperature of the capacitor increases, the dielectric breakdown due to high voltage causes a reduction in capacitance, which leads to a decrease in inverter power and causes vehicle defects; this needs to be addressed to minimize the heat of the capacitor. Recently, genetic films that can be used at high temperatures have been developed. However, producing such films is difficult because of their 5 µm thickness; thus, the size increases when they are designed and they consequently cannot be used in practical applications. Based on a film width of 50 mm, this study anal... [more]

Keywords: Design Builder, discomfort, Energy Efficiency, overheating, thermal comfort, weighted measure of discomfort
The heatwaves that have affected our civilization in recent years pose a serious threat to the environment as well as the proper functioning of our bodies. Schools are facilities with specific microclimatic requirements. Thermal conditions in educational buildings are decisive for the stimulation and efficiency of the learning process, as well as the interaction of students. Based on the measurements of thermal comfort carried out in the school building, with the energy standard of a passive building, it can be observed that in schools with very low energy consumption, the problem of interior overheating may occur in the summer months. In this paper, an attempt was made to search for alternative passive measures allowing for the required indoor microclimate conditions to be obtained. Such solutions are in line with the spirit of the European energy policy and sustainable development. A model of the school under study was created using the Design Builder simulation program. Keywords: cementing, concentric, Hele-Shaw cell, interface tracking, stable displacement, viscous fingering
We present our new designed concentric Hele-Shaw cell geometry with dynamic similarity to a real field wellbore annulus during primary cementing, and then, the results of displacement flow of Newtonian and yield-stress non-Newtonian fluids in it are described. The displacement stability and efficiency, the effect of back, front, and side boundaries on displacement, bypassing pockets of displaced yield-stress fluid in displacing fluid, and the behavior of pressure gradients in the cell are investigated. Applications of intermediate buoyant particles with different sizes and densities intermediate between those of successively pumped fluids for tracking the interface between the two displaced and displacing fluids are examined. The main idea is to upgrade this concentric Hele-Shaw cell geometry later to an eccentric one and check the possibility of tracking the interface between successive fluids pumped in the cell. Successful results help us track the interface between drilling fluid an... [more]

Aldona Skotnicka-Siepsiak
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Coanda effect, Coanda effect hysteresis (CEH), mixing ventilation, unsteady ventilation
Energy-saving ventilation systems are designed to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. Low energy efficiency in buildings poses a considerable problem that needs to be addressed. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery has gained increased popularity in recent years. Mechanical ventilation has numerous advantages, including easy adjustment and control, high indoor air quality and elimination of indoor pollutants. Mixing ventilation is the most popular type of mechanical ventilation, in particular in residential buildings. Unsteady ventilation is a type of mixing ventilation that involves stronger mixing effects and smaller vertical temperature gradients to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) and minimize energy consumption. This study examines the possibility of controlling and modifying Coanda effect hysteresis (CEH) to generate unsteady flow and simulate the conditions of unsteady mixing ventilation. The experiment was performed on a self-designed test bench at the University o... [more]
Multi-Scale Microfluidics for Transport in Shale Fabric

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fracture network, micromodel, transport
We develop a microfluidic experimental platform to study solute transport in multi-scale fracture networks with a disparity of spatial scales ranging between two and five orders of magnitude. Using the experimental scaling relationship observed in Marcellus shales between fracture aperture and frequency, the microfluidic design of the fracture network spans all length scales from the micron (1 μ) to the dm (10 dm). This intentional `tyranny of scales’ in the design, a determining feature of shale fabric, introduces unique complexities during microchip fabrication, microfluidic flow-through experiments, imaging, data acquisition and interpretation. Here, we establish best practices to achieve a reliable experimental protocol, critical for reproducible studies involving multi-scale physical micromodels spanning from the Darcy- to the pore-scale (dm to μm). With this protocol, two fracture networks are created: a macrofracture network with fracture apertures between 5 and 500 μm and a mic... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BLDC, dual rotor, magnetic equivalent circuit, operation mode
In this paper, the design process of brushless DC (BLDC) motor adopting the dual rotor structure that can reduce the overall size of the motor while generating the same torque as the conventional permanent magnet BLDC motor is analyzed. A simple size is selected by obtaining the torque per rotor volume (TRV), and a method of matching the counter electromotive force by selecting the pole-arc of the magnet through a magnetic equivalent circuit is analyzed. Since the efficiency is low because the 120-degree commutation method is selected, the middle stator is optimized through detailed design through the experimental design method. Afterwards, it has the advantage of being able to shift without stopping due to the characteristic of a dual rotor. For this, an analysis of the driving characteristics for each mode is performed.

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, integration approach, mango waste, response surface methodology, waste management
A significant expansion of anaerobic digestion (AD) processes would certainly result in a reduction in the current dependence on fossil fuels. The operational costs, the large amounts of digestate generated and the expenses of dealing with it and the volatility of the fuel indexes represent major environmental and economical challenges to the diffusion of AD. Increasing the bio-products of AD could possibly help in increasing its profitability and limit these challenges. This study investigates the influence of mango starch and seed coats on the biogas produced from mango waste. To overcome the environmental challenges, the digestate was tested and its bio-fertiliser potential proven. The study reached the conclusion that the effect of the starch on the AD biogas of mango waste is low while the effect of the seed coats is quite high. This finding supports further investigations to evaluate the effect of the production of mango starch and seed coat-based products on the profitability of... [more]

Keywords: bridge decks, deicing system, evaluation indexes, geothermal energy, optimal design scheme
Ground source deicing system application in bridge decks is an alternative to salt use, which reduces corrosion and extends the deck service life. Herein, a preliminary parametric numerical analysis is performed to investigate the effects of several important parameters (tube spacing, inlet temperature, flow rate, and concrete cover) on heat transfer performance. Three evaluation indexes (average top surface temperature, snow melting proportion, and heat absorption power) are introduced, and a synthetic evaluation index is proposed to comprehensively consider factors. Mainly referring to the synthetic evaluation index, the optimal design scheme of a geothermally heated bridge deck system under various conditions (layout, lane number, ambient temperature, and tube spacing) is obtained and analyzed to determine the optimal inlet temperature and guide heated bridge deck design. Finally, the influence of wind speed and two adjustment methods are studied. The results indicate that the horiz... [more]
