Foamed Eco-Geopolymer Modified by Perlite and Cellulose as a Construction Material for Energy-Efficient Buildings
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: civil engineering, composite materials, compressive strength, metakaolin, thermal conductivity, thermal insulation
Irreversible climate change, including atmosphere temperature extremes, is one of the most important issues of the present time. In this context, the construction industry requires solutions for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings through feedback between temperature adjustment inside buildings and better isolation of the external parts of buildings. Newly developed thermal insulation materials play an important role in this strategy. This paper presents the foamed geopolymer based on metakaolin that can be used as a modern facade material. In order to further improve its thermal insulation properties, the composition of geopolymer was modified with organic substances, i.e., perlite and cellulose fibers (30% and 50% of the volume). The thermal conductivity and insulation properties, density, mineral phases, absorbability, and compressive strength were improved for composite materials. It has been shown that the final properties of the foamed geopolymer can be controlled to a... [more]

A Thermodynamic Model for Carbon Dioxide Storage in Underground Salt Caverns
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, numerical study, salt cavern, thermodynamic model, underground gas storage
In the context of green energy and decarbonization, carbon dioxide storage in underground facilities, such as salt caverns, is one promising technical solution that has aroused attention. However, the thermodynamic behavior of CO2 and the geomechanical response of salt cavities have not been studied comprehensively. In this study, we proposed a thermomechanical model that integrated a salt cavity and wellbore and implemented a series of simulations for carbon dioxide storage in a salt cavern. The model was verified by gas capacity calculations using field testing data. The thermodynamic behaviors of CO2 were determined and compared to methane. The results showed that the critical point coordinates of carbon dioxide were within the storage operation conditions, a phase transition could occur, and the thermodynamic properties around the critical point varied dramatically. For a short CO2 withdrawal operation, the salt cavity remained stable, while the near-wellbore area (NWA) was prone t... [more]

Source-to-Sink Comparative Study between Gas Reservoirs of the Ledong Submarine Channel and the Dongfang Submarine Fan in the Yinggehai Basin, South China Sea
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: gas reservoirs, source-to-sink, South China Sea, submarine channel, submarine fan, Yinggehai Basin
The Ledong submarine channel and the Dongfang submarine fan, two remarkable sedimentary systems developed during the late Miocene, are considered promising hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Yinggehai Basin of the South China Sea. A comparative study was conducted to reveal the differences between the source-to-sink characteristics of the two gas-bearing and gravity-driven depositional systems to determine their provenances, formation mechanisms and migration paths as well as their key controlling factors. The heavy mineral assemblages and detrital zircon U-Pb dating results suggest that the Ledong channel was fed by the Hainan provenance from the eastern margin, whereas the Dongfang fan was supplied by northwestern terrigenous sources. The relative sea level transgression and sufficient sediment supply triggered the delivery of deltaic loads toward the continental shelves. Seismic data show that fracture activity had a great impact on the tectono-morphologic features of the margins. During... [more]

Jet in Accelerating Turbulent Crossflow with Passive Scalar Transport
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: crossflow jet, DNS, passive scalar, turbulent boundary layer
The interaction of a turbulent, spatially developing crossflow with a transverse jet possesses several engineering and technological applications such as film cooling of turbine blades, exhaust plumes, thrust vector control, fuel injection, etc. Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of a jet in a crossflow under different streamwise pressure gradients (zero and favorable pressure gradient) is carried out. The purpose is to study the physics behind the transport phenomena and coherent structure dynamics in turbulent crossflow jets at different streamwise pressure gradients and low/high-velocity ratios (0.5 and 1). The temperature was regarded as a passive scalar with a molecular Prandtl number of 0.71. The analysis is performed by prescribing accurate turbulent information (instantaneous velocity and temperature) at the inlet of a computational domain. The upward motion of low-momentum fluid created by the “legs” of the counter-rotating vortex pair (CVP) encounters the downward inviscid flo... [more]

Experimental Study on the Effect of Partial Oxidation on the Microscopic Morphology of Soot Particles
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon soot particles, fixed-bed reactor, microscopic morphology, oxidation rate, TEM
Diesel engine exhaust pipes are in a high-temperature and high-oxygen environment; the carbon soot formed by fuel combustion will be partially oxidized, and its physicochemical properties will change significantly after oxidation. In order to study the effect law of partial oxidation on carbon soot particles emitted from automobiles, commercial carbon black samples (Printex-U carbon) were selected to replace actual carbon soot particles in this paper, and experiments were conducted on a fixed-bed catalytic oxidation device to obtain carbon soot particles with four oxidation rates by varying the time duration of oxygen introduction. Subsequently, the microstructure images of the corresponding carbon soot particles were obtained using TEM and measured after image processing with ImageJ software. The results showed that the average particle size, particle layer spacing, and distortion of carbon soot particles gradually decreased with the increase in oxidation rate. Moreover, the basic par... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: electricity sector, greenhouse gas, low-carbon transition, renewable energy policies, South America
The decarbonization of the energy sector is among the leading global goals, and the electricity sector plays a crucial role in this low-carbon transition. However, South American countries have been underrepresented in this discussion. Understanding the particularities and the shifts in the electricity sector landscape of these countries over time and how natural resource availability, technology, and energy policies are decisive to a low-carbon transition summarizes the proposed matters in this research. This work aims to fill this gap by investigating past renewability trends in the electricity sector of five South American countries from 1990 to 2020 through five indicators. As a result, we observed a trend of low-carbon reverse transition in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, despite the efforts and the success of renewable energy auctions, making short-term energy policy measures necessary. In Venezuela, there is a decrease in consumption and an increase in electricity generation using... [more]

Optimizing Composition of Fracturing Fluids for Energy Storage Hydraulic Fracturing Operations in Tight Oil Reservoirs
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy storage hydraulic fracturing, fracturing fluid, tight oil reservoir
Energy storage fracturing technology is a technical means by which oil displacement fluid is injected into the reservoir before the traditional hydraulic fracturing and subsequent implement fracturing. It provides a good solution for developing tight oil reservoirs. The efficiency of this technology significantly depends on the injection performance of the fracturing fluid, and the ability of its liquid phase to penetrate the formation. According to the needs of energy storage fracturing, four surfactants were selected. Then, based on the performance evaluation of the four surfactants, the compositions of two surfactant systems were determined. The performance of slickwater fracturing fluids for energy storage hydraulic fracturing was evaluated. The mechanism of tight oil displacement in energy storage hydraulic fracturing was analyzed. The results showed that the compositions of oil−displacement agents 1 and 2 for energy storage fracturing were successfully acquired. The performance o... [more]

The constant rise in the consumption of resources puts the environment under pressure. Most resources are non-renewable in nature, which is why they must be utilized with great care. For this reason, the European Union devotes increasingly more attention to their efficient use. It deals with these aspects, making an effort to maintain the long-term competitiveness and to secure sustainable development in line with all of the related environmental impacts. In this context, several goals have been set out, to which the individual EU member states are bound. A method for monitoring resource efficiency was developed, consisting of indicators, the aim of which is to assess the efficiency of the use of soil, water, energy, with the most fundamental one being resource productivity. The results of the efficiency of use of the individual resources in the member states greatly differ, even without further investigating the links and correlations between the indicators. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: combined tooth profiles, control points, powertrain system, stress analysis, tooth contact analysis, topological structure
Helical gears are widely used in powertrain systems. The computerized design of a new type of non-generated external helical gears based on critical control points at the transverse tooth profile is presented. The entire tooth profile is divided into different parts including the active tooth profile and fillet by control points. Involutes, circular arcs and Hermite curves are defined between two critical control points and smoothly connected with each other at those control points. The parametric equations for the tooth surfaces are derived considering the position of the mentioned control points. The basic design parameters and equations of the geometric sizing are proposed. The contact patterns, variation of the maximum stresses and peak-to-peak level of loaded transmission errors for six cases of design of the proposed new geometry of helical gear drives are studied with two cases of traditional helical gear drives as a reference, including gears with and without micro-geometry mod... Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: analytic hierarchy process (AHP), analytic network process (ANP), multi-criteria decision making (MCDM), site selection, technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), uncertainty, wind energy
The identification of appropriate locations for wind energy development is a complex problem that involves several factors, ranging from technical to socio-economic and environmental aspects. Wind energy site selection is generally associated with high degrees of uncertainty due to the long planning, design, construction, and operational timescales. Thus, there is a crucial need to develop efficient methods that are capable of capturing uncertainties in subjective assessments provided by different stakeholders with diverse views. This paper proposes a novel multi-criteria decision model integrating the fuzzy analytic network process (FANP) and the fuzzy technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) to evaluate and prioritize the potential sites for wind power development. Four major criteria, namely economic, social, technical, and geographical, with nine sub-criteria are identified based on consultation with wind farm investors, regulatory bodies, landowners... High-Frequency Sea-Level Cycle Reconstruction and Vertical Distribution of Carbonate Ramp Shoal Facies Dolomite Reservoir in Gucheng Area, East Tarim Basin
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbonate ramp, high-frequency sea-level cycle, Ordovician Ying 3 member, shoal facies dolomite reservoir, Tarim basin
During the sedimentary period of the Ordovician Yingshan Formation, the carbonate platform of the Gucheng area in the Tarim basin was characterized by a distally steepened ramp. Relative sea-level changes exerted a strong influence on the shoal facie dolomite reservoirs of the 3rd Member of the Ordovician Yingshan Formation (the Ying 3 member), sedimented in the context of a shallow water environment on the carbonate ramp. However, previous studies that lacked high-frequency sea-level changes in the Gucheng area prevent further dolomite reservoir characterization. The current work carries out systematic sampling based on the continuous core from the upper and middle parts of the Ying 3 member in two newly drilled exploration wells (GC17 and GC601) and a series of geochemistry analyses, such as C-O isotope, Sr isotope, and rare earth elements (REE), which helps to investigate the features of the shoal facies dolomite reservoir development against high-frequency sea-level changes. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural network, deep learning, geothermal energy, Machine Learning, predictive modeling, python programming, random forests, rate of penetration (ROP)
Well planning for every drilling project includes cost estimation. Maximizing the rate of penetration (ROP) reduces the time required for drilling, resulting in reducing the expenses required for the drilling budget. The empirical formulas developed to predict ROP have limited field applications. Since real-time drilling data acquisition and computing technologies have improved over the years, we implemented the data-driven approach for this purpose. We investigated the potential of machine learning and deep learning algorithms to predict the nonlinear behavior of the ROP. The well was drilled to confirm the geothermal reservoir characteristics for the FORGE site. After cleaning and preprocessing the data, we selected two models and optimized their hyperparameters. According to our findings, the random forest regressor and the artificial neural network predicted the behavior of our field ROP with a maximum absolute mean error of 3.98, corresponding to 19% of the ROP’s standard deviatio... Public Transport Decarbonization via Urban Bus Fleet Replacement in Portugal
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: bus fleet, decarbonization, electric buses, green public transport, zero-emissions
The transport sector accounts for around one-quarter of the GHG emissions in Europe, and, in Portugal, it represents almost one-third of the total emissions to the atmosphere. Unfortunately, these emissions have increased in recent years. Hence, cities and countries need plans to decarbonize their public transport fleets, and, more specifically, to replace fossil-fueled buses with electric buses that produce zero CO2 emissions. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to present a method to decarbonize the bus fleet in Portugal by a scheduled replacement of the current fleet, which is fueled by fossil fuels, with a completely electric fleet, in fourteen years. The study shows that it is possible to replace all Portuguese urban bus fleets with electric vehicles considering that all vehicles will be replaced when reaching the age of 14 years. Replacing the urban bus fleet with zero-emission buses would aid policymakers and bus companies to reduce the GHGs, and therefore contribute to fu... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cavity forming mechanism, center holes, field application experiment, numerical simulation, supplementary blasting, wedge cutting blasting method
To acquire a satisfying cutting effect during medium-length hole blasting driving of rock tunnels, an improved wedge cutting blasting method with supplementary blasting of the center holes was proposed. Initially, the cavity forming mechanism of the improved cutting method was analyzed theoretically. The results suggested that cutting hole blasting could realize the ejection of rock within the range from free face to critical cutting depth, and hence reduce the restraining force of the center hole blasting, and the supplementary blasting of the center holes could further accomplish the expulsion of the residuary rock. Subsequently, simulation of the improved cutting method was implemented to exhibit the stress wave evolution and reveal the stress field distribution. The simulation results indicated that cutting hole blasting could cause the preliminary failure of the residuary rock, and center hole blasting could strengthen the stress field intensity in 1.8−2.5 m in order to aggravate... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: deep learning, intelligent modeling, variable selection, waste-to-energy
The incineration process in waste-to-energy plants is characterized by high levels of inertia, large delays, strong coupling, and nonlinearity, which makes accurate modeling difficult. Therefore, an intelligent modeling method for the incineration process in waste-to-energy plants based on deep learning is proposed. First, the output variables were selected from the three aspects of safety, stability and economy. The initial variables related to the output variables were determined by mechanism analysis and the input variables were finally determined by removing invalid and redundant variables through the Lasso algorithm. Secondly, each delay time was calculated, and a multi-input and multi-output model was established on the basis of deep learning. Finally, the deep learning model was compared and verified with traditional models, including LSSVM, CNN, and LSTM. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: damping, electromechanical oscillations, grid-following, grid-forming, inertia, phase-locked loop, power converters, virtual synchronous machine
The oscillatory behaviour of the power system is an aspect that is significantly affected by the increasing integration of converter-based generation sources. Several works address the impact of non-synchronous generation on the operation of the system from different points of view, but only a few studies focus on power-frequency oscillations with a prevalence of generation sources interfaced through power electronics. A lack of research can be found in particular in the comparative analysis of the two main control strategies for power converters, namely grid-following and grid-forming. The article aims to contribute to this direction, starting from a theoretical analysis of the two control structures and then examining the case study of an existing transmission system. The research provides a specific insight into the fundamental aspects related to synchronisation mechanism and inertial capabilities of both grid-following with synthetic inertia and grid-forming controls. CO2 Emissions in China: Does the Energy Rebound Matter?
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emissions, energy rebound effect, regional heterogeneity, system generalized method of moments
Enhancing energy efficiency is globally regarded as an effective way to reduce carbon emissions. In recent years, the energy efficiency of China has gradually improved; however, energy consumption and CO2 emissions are still increasing. To better understand the reasons for this, we evaluated the energy rebound effect (RE) of 30 provinces in China over the period 2001−2017 by employing stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and the system generalized method of moments (system-GMM) approach, and explored the extent to which the RE affects CO2 emissions. Asymmetric and regional heterogeneity analyses were also conducted. The results indicate that the national average RE was 90.47% in the short run, and 78.17% in the long run, during the sample period. Most of the provinces experienced a partial RE, with a backfire effect occurring in some provinces such as Guangxi and Henan. The RE was associated with significant increases in CO2 emissions; specifically, a 1% increase in the short-run RE led... [more]

Keywords: carbon–carbon double bond component crude oil, coalescence behavior, emulsified oil droplets, emulsion, saturated hydrocarbon component crude oil
The microscopic interactions between oil droplets during the coalescence process have an important impact on the stability of the emulsion. In this paper, a model that can present the phenomenon of coalescence of oil droplets was established. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the stability of the emulsion. Combined with molecular dynamics simulation technology, the coalescence behaviors of emulsified oil droplets in fluids produced by oil wells were studied. Factors affecting the coalescence of emulsified oil droplets were analyzed. The results show that the fluid velocity was relatively high at the position where two oil droplets were close to each other. After the coalescence of oil droplets was completed, the emulsion system became stable. There was no obvious correlation between oil droplet size and coalescence time. When two adjacent oil droplets with different radii coalesced, the larger oil droplet moved a shorter distance overall. At the initial moment, there was a clear... [more]
