Prospects for Power Generation of the Doublet Supercritical Geothermal System in Reykjanes Geothermal Field, Iceland

Supercritical geothermal resources are in the preliminary exploration stage as a new type of clean energy and there are no practical utilization projects. The IDDP-2 well at Reykjanes geothermal field in Iceland encountered supercritical geothermal conditions in 2017, with a maximum temperature of 535 °C. The system is still in the field experiment stage and no exploitation work has been carried out. Hence, a hypothetical doublet geothermal system was simulated based on IDDP-2 to study the power generation potential and favorable operating conditions for future development of supercritical geothermal resources. Energy and Environmental Impact of the Promotion of Battery Electric Vehicles in the Context of Banning Gasoline Vehicle Sales

This study quantitively estimates the energy and environmental impacts of China’s promotion of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the context of banning the sale of gasoline vehicles (GVs). Combining the population ecological growth model and the life cycle assessment method, the potential of BEVs promotion in reducing fossil energy (FE) consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under different timings of banning GV sales was dynamically simulated and analyzed. The results show that the current life cycle FE consumption and GHG emissions of BEVs are approximately 40.1% and 26.6% lower than those of GVs, respectively. Based on the development of automobile technology and the national energy plan, replacing GVs with BEVs can reduce GHG emissions and FE consumption by up to 43.61−55.81% and 46.33−55.45%, respectively. The crude glycerol produced as a byproduct of transesterification synthesis has very few applications because it comprises of significant amounts of methanol, catalyst, and soap. On the other hand, transesterifications of highly acidic oil in the presence of an alkaline catalyst are problematic due to the presence of high amounts of free fatty acids. In this study, the free fatty acid level of high acid oil, which was initially determined to be 19.25%, was decreased to permit the direct production of biodiesel via glycerolysis with pure glycerol, making direct transesterification feasible. Through a process of purification, crude glycerol was refined to 92.5% purity. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology has attracted a great amount of attention due to its potential for organic and inorganic waste treatment concomitant with power generation. Modifications and innovations have been conducted on standalone and hybrid/coupled MFC systems to improve the power output to meet the end goal, namely, commercialization and implementation into existing wastewater treatment plants. As the energy generated is inversely proportional to the size of the reactor, the stacking method has been proven to boost the power output from MFC. In recent years, stacked or scale-up MFCs have also been used as a power source to provide off-grid energy, as well as for in situ assessments. In the conceptual system, a fan coil was used to chill the recirculating fluid in the linear High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) ground loop system. A fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical finite element framework was employed to analyze multiphysics processes involved in the thaw settlement phenomenon. Maximizing Lubricant Life for Internal Combustion Engines

Although the lubrication systems for internal combustion engines have been designed to prevent engine wear and friction, their configuration does not contemplate the maximum use of each load of lubricant; because of this limitation, lubricant consumption is currently an environmental and economic problem. In this work, the performance of lubrication systems to form the tribological film that prevents wear is simulated and optimized, through the mass balance of the lubricant precursors contained in the oil and the implementation of optimal control techniques. Optimization results indicate that regulating the flow of lubricant passing through the engine prevents excessive degradation of lubricant precursors, maximizing the life of each lube oil charge, giving the possibility to increase the sustainability of internal combustion engines.
