Jan Banaś, Katarzyna Utnik-Banaś
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy wood, logging residues, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, retention trees, woody biomass
Using timber from multifunctional forests for energy production can be economically viable and environmentally friendly when it is consistent with the principles of sustainable management; otherwise, it could be harmful from both an ecological and commercial point of view. The objective of this paper was to present the overall balance of timber biomass from felled trees in multifunctional forests and assess what kind and how much of this biomass can be used for energy purposes. The research material consisted of data on forest resources and the volume of timber removal in Polish State Forests in 2016−2020. The biomass of branches and stumps of felled trees was determined using biomass expansion factors (BEFs). The results obtained in this study indicated that industrial timber, energy wood, and biomass left in the forest as a source of deadwood are 67%, 20%, and 13% of the total woody biomass, respectively. The Polish State Forest’s potential for energy wood is estimated at 6.18 millio... [more]

Keywords: hybrid microgrid, MOPSO, operation optimization, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Microgrids, or distributed systems of local energy generation, transmission, and demand, are now technologically and operationally capable of providing power to communities, especially in rural and peri-urban regions of developing nations. The reliability of the system, the cost of power generation, and the operating environmental impact are the major issues when designing and evaluating the performance of an off-grid hybrid renewable energy microgrid (HREM). This paper presents an integrated method for optimal sizing and operation of an HREM for rural agricultural communities in the Southern Philippines composed of run-of-the-river hydropower, photovoltaics (PV), diesel generator, and a battery energy storage system (BESS) using multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) and a proposed multi-case power management strategy. The three conflicting objective functions that were simultaneously minimized were: loss of power supply probability (LPSP), levelized cost of energy (LCOE)... [more]
Non-Technical Electricity Losses

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity theft, non-technical electricity losses, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, transmission and distribution losses
Non-technical loss of electricity (comprising theft, fraud, non-payment and billing irregularities) is a significant issue, particularly in developing countries, and represents a large financial burden on utility companies, governments and society as a whole. This paper takes a wholistic and global view of the challenge and provides a broad perspective of the interrelated issues. Media reports and public perception of non-technical losses tend to focus on residential consumers, particularly those with limited financial resources, whereas review of more robust literature indicates that the largest proportion of non-technical losses is often due to industry, state-owned enterprises and relatively well-off residential consumers. Measures to reduce non-technical losses focusing on average residential consumers, such as pre-paid metering, therefore have limited effect on overall losses. Strengthening of legal and regulatory frameworks, particularly with regard to those larger users, and ins... [more]

Keywords: blockchain, distributed ledger technology, distributed systems, energy trading, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, smart grid
We present a prototype of a decentralized power trading system based on the use of distributed ledger technology. This sort of efficient, decentralized marketplace is needed to empower prosumers and make them first-class members of a smart, decentralized power grid in order to drive further renewable energy adoption. Unlike the bulk of previous work in this field, we focus on private permissioned distributed ledgers rather than conventional blockchains. The proposed solution is entirely independent of cryptocurrency, with an explicit design capability of being adapted piecemeal without any fundamental changes to the present regulatory environment. To be economical, efficient, and scalable, our prototype is based on a lean, Corda-based private permissioned distributed ledger. It allows for instant, automatic bidding on and trading of ‘power promises’ and the robust implementation of short-term, small-scale liquid electrical power futures. We demonstrate that the prototype performs well... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: medium voltage, metaheuristic optimisation, Q(U) characteristics, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, voltage control, voltage quality
Connecting an increasing number of distributed sources in MV (medium voltage) and LV (low voltage) distribution networks causes voltage problems resulting mainly from periodic power flows towards the HV/MV (HV—high voltage) transformer station. This temporarily changes the nature of distribution networks from receiving to supply networks and causes an increase in the voltage values deep within the network, often above the permissible level. Therefore, it is necessary to search for new voltage control methods that take into account the active participation of distributed sources. The article proposes a concept of such a system in which the control signals are transformer taps in the HV/LV station and the values of reactive powers generated or consumed by RES (renewable energy sources). These values can be determined either by solving the optimisation problem (according to a given quality indicator criterion) or on the basis of appropriately selected settings of the Q(U) characteristics... March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electromechanical stability, energy storage system, grid codes, power systems analysis, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Despite the benefits of wind and solar photovoltaic generation, its stochastic characteristic imposes uncertainties on the electric power system’s transient stability. The dynamics considering large synchronous generators has been studied for many decades, and its behavior is well known. On the other hand, the penetration of renewable sources has reached records, showing that it is still vital to study their impact. The present work proposes computer modeling and simulations for the dynamic analysis of electromechanical stability in a transmission system with significant renewable generation. In general, the literature does not propose solutions to the electromechanical stability analysis, proving that there are gaps to be filled. Therefore, the main work contribution consists of designing and coupling a battery energy storage system to a solar plant to smooth power variations. A significant innovation is the proposition of different scenarios that replicate disturbance situations, whe... [more]

The objective of this paper is to ascertain the impact of Chinese FDI on economic growth in Pakistan. This study documents the exploration of the determinants of economic growth in Pakistan by emphasizing the significant role played by Chinese FDI and investments in renewable energy in particular. This paper employs time series data analysis to examine the relationship between GDP and Chinese FDI, inflation, trade openness, exchange rates, interest rates, remittances, and renewable energy consumption from 1990 to 2019. The study involved performing the ARDL bounds test, and it was determined that the dependent and independent variables are linked in the long term. Furthermore, the error correction model is negative and noteworthy, which checks the long-run relationship between variables. According to the findings of the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model, Chinese FDI has a substantial favorable effect on Pakistan’s economic growth. Furthermore, renewable energy usage has a lon... [more]

Keywords: LCOE, optimal sizing, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sea wave, small islands
The importance of renewable energy exploitation reduces the energy dependence on fossil fuels. Despite technological progress, in several remote areas and small islands the energy production is nowadays dominated by the utilization of fossil fuels. With new, increasingly stringent laws on polluting emissions and the need to lower production costs, it is necessary to exploit as many renewable sources as possible. In order to implement these considerations, it was decided to study renewable energy production. The study was carried out by estimating the energy production on a monthly and annual basis considering a mix of three plants, namely marine, solar, and wind. Simulations on wave production were carried out on a new device developed by the research team at the University of Palermo. In order to be able to perform these simulations, input climate data are required. These data are normally available in literature or obtainable by using specific GIS tools. As criterium, the Levelized C... [more]

Keywords: additional waste heat utilisation, charging of battery electric vehicles, combined heat- and power, decentralised power generation, energy self-sufficiency, fuel cell electric vehicle, low power from wind and PV, neighbourhood, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) can be used during idle times to convert hydrogen into electricity in a decentralised manner, thus ensuring a completely renewable energy supply. In addition to the electric power, waste heat is generated in the fuel cell stack that can also be used. This paper investigates how the energy demand of a compiled German neighbourhood can be met by FCEVs and identifies potential technical problems. For this purpose, energy scenarios are modelled in the Open Energy System Modelling Framework (oemof). An optimisation simulation finds the most energetically favourable solution for the 10-day period under consideration. Up to 49% of the heat demand for heating and hot water can be covered directly by the waste heat of the FCEVs. As the number of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to be charged increases, so does this share. 5 of the 252 residents must permanently provide an FCEV to supply the neighbourhood. The amount of hydrogen required was identified as a pr... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, economic growth, educational attainment, panel causality analysis, panel cointegration analysis, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Renewable energy has become a crucial factor for circular economies, sustainable development, and the environment given the limited non-renewable energy reserves and global environmental degradation mainly resulting from non-renewable energy use. This study explores the effect of educational attainment and economic growth on renewable energy use in a sample of selected emerging markets over the 2000−2018 period through causality and cointegration analyses. Causality analysis points out a significant unidirectional causality from indicators of educational attainment and economic growth to renewable energy use. In other words, educational attainment indicators and economic growth are significant determinants of renewable energy in the short run. Furthermore, the cointegration analysis ascertains a positive influence of indicators of educational attainment and economic growth on renewable energy use in the long run. The findings of both analyses indicate that educational attainment and ec... [more]

Keywords: agriculture residues, Biomass, gasifier, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Bioenergy is one of the most important renewable-energy sources worldwide, accounting for more than two-thirds of the renewable-energy mix. Biomass accounted for 13−14% of the primary energy consumption in 2018, and by 2050, it is expected to account for 50% of the global primary energy consumption. This article studies the biomass potential in Iraq. The potential of this country to be one of the leading producers of bioenergy is discussed, remarking on the importance of agricultural crop waste. Nowadays, Iraq generates a great quantity of biomass every year. Unfortunately, instead of contributing to the energy industry and economic progress, these wastes are burned directly, potentially causing a slew of environmental issues. Based on earlier studies, the theoretical energy potential of Iraq agricultural wastes is assessed. It is concluded that 10 million tons of dry agricultural leftovers can create 115 PJ of energy per year. According to the findings of this study, 10 million heads... [more]

The fulfillment of the sustainable development goals of the United Nations (UN) in remote communities undoubtedly goes through the consequent development of the energy supply system (ESS). Structuring a procedure for modeling the ESS, according to development requirements, is vital for decision making. This publication reviews the main methods for designing local development programs that apply a sustainable livelihoods approach and a group of modeling tools for ESS. The necessary criteria are verified to structure a model that integrates the expectations of sustainable development, through the indicators of sustainable livelihoods (SLs), with the requirements of the ESS and the use of available renewable energy resources. In the review carried out, it is found that the methods of analysis and planning of sustainable local development are disconnected from the models for energy planning. On the other hand, the relationship of the indicators for calculating SLs with the characteristics... [more]

Keywords: additional energy yield, bifacial PV module, Firefly Algorithm, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
A solar bifacial photovoltaic (PV) module is designed so that it permits the addition of the back electrode to the prevailing silicon PV on the front side. Hence, it has the ability to harvest energy using its front and back faces. This study presents an optimization model for calculating the extra energy yield (EY) that can be harvested from the backside of a bifacial PV module using the Firefly Algorithm (FA). Mathematical modelling of the various parameters that influence the extra EY of the backside of a bifacial module was carried out using SIMULINK. Moreover, the mathematical model of the EY of the module was also carried out and then optimized using FA. The optimization model was confined to two orientation states namely the vertical south−north and vertical east−west at Ogbomosho (8.1227° N, 4.2436° E), Nigeria, with different values of albedo and mounting heights. The simulation result shows that the vertical east−west oriented modules outperform the vertical south−north orien... [more]

In this study, the possibility of sector coupling with biological Power-to-Methane to support and stabilize the energy transition of the three major sectors of electricity, heat, and gas was addressed. For this purpose, the energy cell simulation methodology and the Calliope tool were utilized for energy system optimization. This combination provides detailed insights into the existing dependencies of consumers and fossil and renewable energy suppliers on a local scale. In this context, Power-to-Methane represents an efficient technology for quickly and effectively exploiting unused electricity potential for various sectors and consumers. It was found that, even in regions with low wind levels, this surplus electricity potential already exists and depends on various influencing factors in very different ways. The solar influence on these potentials was considered in connection with gas-fired cogeneration plants for district heating. It was found that the current heat demand for distric... [more]

We confront empirical data on citizen-led renewable energy capacities in Poland with results obtained from a meta-theoretical, empirical analysis of the national energy system. We elicit and rank essential disabling and enabling factors that explain the current low level of citizen energy in Poland. Altogether, we estimate the contributions of individual and collective prosumers as amounting to about 3.2 GW, with PV installations contributing more than 90%. Most activities are rather recent and come from individual prosumers. The factors with the greatest explanatory power are connected with decades of a rigid, centralized Polish energy system going hand in hand with social, regulatory, and technical lock-ins. Strikingly, factors connected with the heritage of, and transition from, the socialist period are less important, but they do explain why substantially more contributions originate from individuals compared to collective prosumers. Our results show that the currently rather small... [more]

Keywords: battery energy storage system, doubly fed induction generator, frequency response, generalized predictive control, islanded operation, long-range predictive control, microgrid, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind energy
The power system is moving away from the centralized generation paradigm. One of the current trends is the microgrid concept, where loads, small generators and renewable energy resources (RERs) that are in close proximity are controlled as one entity. Microgrids also allow for an increase in power availability as they can continue to supply electric power to loads even in the absence of a connection to the main grid. During the transition to islanded operation, microgrids may be subject to frequency disturbances caused by the power imbalance between load and generation. When microgrids contain high shares of renewable energy, the challenge is significantly higher due to the control strategies that aim to maximize power production, which are typically applied to RERs and render them insensitive to grid changes. Therefore, new control strategies need to be developed to enable the participation of RERs in the support of the frequency response. This work proposes a predictive control strat... [more]

With increasingly more renewable energy being integrated into the AC-DC hybrid grid, the grid shows more complex dynamic characteristics due to the mutual coupling of HVDC and renewable energy. To evaluate the renewable energy resources’ penetration capacity of the AC-DC hybrid grid, this paper proposes an evaluation method of the renewable energy resources’ penetration capacity of an AC-DC hybrid grid, which considers both economy and safety. Firstly, indicators are proposed for an evaluation of the economy and safety of the AC-DC hybrid grid integrated with renewable energy, where both static and transient stability indicators are considered. Secondly, to maximize the renewable energy penetration capacity and minimize the network loss, an optimization model of the renewable energy penetration capacity of the AC-DC hybrid grid is established considering the static and transient stability constraints. Then, a heuristic solution method for solving the renewable energy penetration capaci... [more]
The Effects of Information and Communication Technology, Economic Growth, Trade Openness, and Renewable Energy on CO2 Emissions in OECD Countries

Keywords: CO2 emissions, gross domestic product, information and communication technology, pooled mean group, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, trade openness
This study examines the relationships between information and communication technology (ICT) usage and CO2 emissions considering economic growth, trade openness, and renewable electricity in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development countries for the period 1990−2018. It adopts pooled mean group (PMG) estimation based on the autoregressive distributed lag model. The PMG estimates indicate that although the coefficient value is small, ICT progress acts as a factor in increasing CO2 emissions in the long run. However, there is no significant short-run relationship between these two variables. Furthermore, economic growth increases CO2 emissions in the short and long run. The expansion of renewable electricity and trade openness reduces CO2 emissions in the long run. To mitigate the CO2 emissions originating from ICT, energy-saving technologies that use ICT as an energy management system should be further enhanced. The expansion of renewable electricity and the promotion... [more]

Insufficient rainfall in the dry season and scarcity of surface water has resulted in firms’ reliance on groundwater for agriculture in the northern part of Bangladesh. Most irrigation systems in the country are diesel or electric, which raises the cost and demand for energy and pollutes the environment. Utilizing the abundant sunshine and disseminating solar-based irrigation systems is expected to be a fittingly rewarding experience for irrigation purposes. Therefore, this study identifies the factors influencing the adoption of solar irrigation facilities (SIFs) and the impacts of their adoption on irrigation cost, return on investment (ROI), and production costs, using survey data collected from 405 rice farmers of Dinajpur district. The study employed three treatment effect estimators, namely inverse probability weighting (IPW), regression adjustment (RA), and inverse probability weighted regression adjustment (IPWRA), to address the potential selection bias issue.
