An Influence of Group Purchasing Organizations on Financial Security of SMEs Operating in the Renewable Energy Sector—Case for Poland
Grzegorz Zimon, Marek Sobolewski, Grzegorz Lew
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bankruptcy, financial liquidity, group purchasing organizations, Polish energy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
European countries are increasingly using renewable energy. Poland is an outsider of such solutions. The Polish energy sector is primarily based on energy produced from coal. However, environmental changes and regulations of the European Union are forcing the increased use of energy from renewable sources. Renewable energy is an industry that is still developing in Poland. At the same time, Poland is a country where the political decisions of the government over the last few years have resulted in a significant limitation of the possibilities of renewable energy development. These actions have also resulted in lowering the profitability of the currently operating renewable energy enterprises, especially those from the sector of small and medium-sized enterprises. An opportunity for SMEs operating in the renewable energy sector is to merge into industry purchasing groups. The aim of the article—and at the same time the research question—is: Is it financially safer for renewable energy c... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed generation, energy communities, energy management, mathematical optimization, microgrids, regulatory framework, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The following paper aims to prove the importance of embedding the regulatory framework when analyzing the distributed generation activity of an energy community. At present, most of the scientific literature has focused on distributed energy, and energy communities address the issue of regulatory frameworks qualitatively. In this paper, the most representative regulatory frameworks devoted to the promotion of energy communities were analyzed and synthesized, namely, feed-in tariffs, net metering, and the self-consumption scheme. As a result, an algebraic model able to represent the essence of the regulatory structures related to those remuneration mechanisms was obtained. Next, this model was embedded into a physical model, based on real data, previously created. The resulting Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) was used to identify the implications of these frameworks. The results demonstrate the impact of regulatory schemes on energy management and economic results of an energy commu... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, neural network, Particle Swarm Optimization, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind power forecasting
As sources of conventional energy are alarmingly being depleted, leveraging renewable energy sources, especially wind power, has been increasingly important in the electricity market to meet growing global demands for energy. However, the uncertainty in weather factors can cause large errors in wind power forecasts, raising the cost of power reservation in the power system and significantly impacting ancillary services in the electricity market. In pursuance of a higher accuracy level in wind power forecasting, this paper proposes a double-optimization approach to developing a tool for forecasting wind power generation output in the short term, using two novel models that combine an artificial neural network with the particle swarm optimization algorithm and genetic algorithm. In these models, a first particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to adjust the neural network parameters to improve accuracy. Next, the genetic algorithm or another particle swarm optimization is applied to... [more]

Over the past few decades, Vietnam has been one of the fastest growing economies in Asia, experiencing a GDP growth rate of more than 6% per year. The energy industry plays an important role in Vietnam’s continuous development, so access to reliable and low-cost energy sources will be an important factor for sustainable economic growth. Achieving the goal of reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, as set out in the Paris agreement on climate change, will depend heavily on the development roadmap of emerging economies, such as Vietnam. Currently, developing hydroelectric plants is Vietnam’s optimal choice in order to meet its target of renewable energy development. Hydroelectricity in Vietnam is favorable thanks to the high average annual rainfall, about 1800−2000 mm, and the dense river system, with more than 3450 systems. In addition to providing electricity, hydropower plants are also responsible for cutting and fighting floods for downstream areas in the rainy season, at the same... [more]

Keywords: cantilever flexible plate, flow-induced vibrations, fluid–structure interaction (FSI), particle image velocimetry (PIV), piezoelectric energy harvester, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, vortex-induced vibrations
Piezoelectric energy harvesters can scavenge energy from their ambient environment in order to power low-consumption electronic devices. The last two decades have seen a growing interest towards vortex-induced vibration harvesters; most harvesters consist in rigid splitter plates oscillating at higher frequencies. The concept presented here is a low-frequency undulating flexible plate placed in the wake of a square cylinder. Piezoelectric patches can be placed at the plate surface to harvest the strain energy arising when the plate bends. The flapping pattern mimics an anguilliform swimming motion. There is a great need to establish correlation between wake generating bluff body size, plate dimensions and power output. Geometric parameters were investigated using water tunnel experiments, particle image velocimetry and fluid−structure interaction modeling. Results showed that for a given plate length and within a given freestream velocity range, there is a square cylinder diameter and... [more]

Keywords: CFD simulation, horizontal axis wind turbine, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, rotor reshape
This paper presents the results of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of the airflow for a 300 W horizontal axis wind turbine, using additional structural elements which modify the original shape of the rotor in the form of multi-shaped bowls which change the airflow distribution. A three-dimensional CAD model of the tested wind turbine was presented, with three variants subjected to simulation: a basic wind turbine without the element that modifies the airflow distribution, a turbine with a plano-convex bowl, and a turbine with a centrally convex bowl, with the hyperbolic disappearance of convexity as the radius of the rotor increases. The momentary value of wind speed, recorded at measuring points located in the plane of wind turbine blades, demonstrated an increase when compared to the base model by 35% for the wind turbine with the plano-convex bowl, for the wind speed of 5 m/s, and 31.3% and 49% for the higher approaching wind speed, for the plano-convex bowl and ce... The Environmental Kuznets Curve and the Energy Mix: A Structural Estimation
Anelí Bongers
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: emissions, energy mix, environmental dynamic general equilibrium model, Environmental Kuznets Curve, Fossil Fuel, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis establishes the existence of an inverted U-shaped relationship between income and environmental deterioration. This paper studies the relationship between the energy mix and pollutant emissions and uses an environmental dynamic general equilibrium model to carry out a structural estimation of the EKC hypothesis. The model considers a three-input production function, including energy. Energy is a composite of fossil fuels and renewable energy sources. The flow of pollutant emissions depends on fossil fuels’ consumption, which accumulates in a pollution stock, resulting in a negative externality that adversely impacts aggregate productivity. Simulations of the model support the existence of a steady-state EKC relationship between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the stock of pollution, where the negative slope side of the curve is very flat. We find that (i) the EKC hypothesis is only fulfilled when the elasticity of substitution between f... [more]

In the fight against climate change, the utilization of renewable energy resources is being encouraged in every country all over the world to lessen the emissions of greenhouse gases. However, not all countries are able to efficiently utilize these resources, and instead of providing solutions, the inefficient use of renewable energy may lead to even more damage to the environment. Data from eight countries belonging to the highly industrialized countries (HIC) group and nine from newly industrialized countries (NIC) group were used to evaluate the energy utilization of these groups. Factors such as total renewable energy capacity, the labor force, and total energy consumption were considered to be the input factors, while, CO2 emission and gross domestic product are the output factors. These factors were used to calculate efficiency scores of every country from 2013 to 2018 using the undesirable output model of Data envelopment analysis (DEA). The grey prediction model was also used t... [more]

The adoption of renewable energies contributes to sustainable development worldwide. Entrepreneurs are key agents in facilitating their promotion, as they improve the mix of the means of production and thus transform renewable energy technologies into viable energy systems. Nonetheless, the literature tends to treat entrepreneurs as a homogeneous group, thus preventing comprehensive understanding of their motivations, behaviors, capabilities, and effects. This study addresses this research gap by identifying and categorizing the various characteristics of these entrepreneurs and developing an integrated classification method. Four examples of renewable energy entrepreneurs, in China, Denmark, Germany, and India, are analyzed according to the proposed classification method, while demonstrating their differences. Thus, through proposing a new analytical typology, this study improves our understanding of renewable energy entrepreneurs and their significant role in the promotion of renewab... [more]

Microgrids need control and management at different levels to allow the inclusion of renewable energy sources. In this paper, a comprehensive literature review is presented to analyse the latest trends in research and development referring to the applications of predictive control in microgrids. As a result of this review, it was found that the application of predictive control techniques on microgrids is performed for the three control levels and with adaptations of the models in order to include uncertainties to improve their performance and dynamics response. In addition, to ensure system stability, but also, at higher control levels, coordinated operation among the microgrid’s components and synchronised and optimised operation with utility grids and electric power markets. Predictive control appears as a very promising control scheme with several advantages for microgrid applications of different control levels.

Transactive energy is a novel approach for energy management and trading, which can be used in microgrids to facilitate the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in existing networks. The key feature in transactive energy is using market-based solutions for energy management. Hence, an appropriate transactive energy market (TEM) framework should be designed to enable and incentivize DER owners to participate in different markets. The efficient implementation of TEM for microgrid energy management encompasses the application of a variety of design principles. In this rapidly developing area, this paper presents a complete proposal of the TEM as a framework for the design, implementation, and deployment of transactive energy solutions for energy management in microgrids. In particular, we outline the requirements to design an effective market mechanism for the TEM. The applicability of this perspective is demonstrated through the introduction of the Monash Microgrid as a rea... [more]

The U.S. and Canada continue to face major changes in energy production. Mounting awareness of the climate crisis has placed increasing importance on developing renewable energy sources, however, advances in fossil fuel extraction technology have opened vast domestic reserves of oil and natural gas. Public preferences for energy policy play a role in determining energy futures, but researchers rarely simultaneously compare public views across multiple renewable and non-renewable energies or across country boundaries. Here, we used a 2019 online survey sample (n = 1500) to compare predictors of support for eight fuel sources for electricity generation in British Columbia, Canada, and Washington and Oregon, USA. Results indicate the highest support overall for renewables (wind, solar, wave/tidal energy, geothermal) and the lowest for fossil fuels (coal and natural gas), nuclear, and hydropower. Mixed-effects regression modeling indicates that views on climate and the balance between envi... [more]
