Wind Energy Development Site Selection Using an Integrated Fuzzy ANP-TOPSIS Decision Model
Mahmood Shafiee.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytic hierarchy process (AHP), analytic network process (ANP), multi-criteria decision making (MCDM), site selection, technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), uncertainty, wind energy.
The identification of appropriate locations for wind energy development is a complex problem that involves several factors, ranging from technical to socio-economic and environmental aspects. Wind energy site selection is generally associated with high degrees of uncertainty due to the long planning, design, construction, and operational timescales. Thus, there is a crucial need to develop efficient methods that are capable of capturing uncertainties in subjective assessments provided by different stakeholders with diverse views. This paper proposes a novel multi-criteria decision model integrating the fuzzy analytic network process (FANP) and the fuzzy technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) to evaluate and prioritize the potential sites for wind power development. Four major criteria, namely economic, social, technical, and geographical, with nine sub-criteria are identified based on consultation with wind farm investors, regulatory bodies, landowners... High-Frequency Sea-Level Cycle Reconstruction and Vertical Distribution of Carbonate Ramp Shoal Facies Dolomite Reservoir in Gucheng Area, East Tarim Basin
Tong Lin, Kedan Zhu, You Zhang, Zihui Feng, Xingping Zheng, Bin Li, Qifan Yi.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbonate ramp, high-frequency sea-level cycle, Ordovician Ying 3 member, shoal facies dolomite reservoir, Tarim basin.
During the sedimentary period of the Ordovician Yingshan Formation, the carbonate platform of the Gucheng area in the Tarim basin was characterized by a distally steepened ramp. Relative sea-level changes exerted a strong influence on the shoal facie dolomite reservoirs of the 3rd Member of the Ordovician Yingshan Formation (the Ying 3 member), sedimented in the context of a shallow water environment on the carbonate ramp. However, previous studies that lacked high-frequency sea-level changes in the Gucheng area prevent further dolomite reservoir characterization. The current work carries out systematic sampling based on the continuous core from the upper and middle parts of the Ying 3 member in two newly drilled exploration wells (GC17 and GC601) and a series of geochemistry analyses, such as C-O isotope, Sr isotope, and rare earth elements (REE), which helps to investigate the features of the shoal facies dolomite reservoir development against high-frequency sea-level changes. Applying Machine Learning to Predict the Rate of Penetration for Geothermal Drilling Located in the Utah FORGE Site
Mohamed Arbi Ben Aoun, Tamás Madarász.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network, deep learning, geothermal energy, Machine Learning, predictive modeling, python programming, random forests, rate of penetration (ROP).
Well planning for every drilling project includes cost estimation. Maximizing the rate of penetration (ROP) reduces the time required for drilling, resulting in reducing the expenses required for the drilling budget. The empirical formulas developed to predict ROP have limited field applications. Since real-time drilling data acquisition and computing technologies have improved over the years, we implemented the data-driven approach for this purpose. We investigated the potential of machine learning and deep learning algorithms to predict the nonlinear behavior of the ROP. The well was drilled to confirm the geothermal reservoir characteristics for the FORGE site. After cleaning and preprocessing the data, we selected two models and optimized their hyperparameters. According to our findings, the random forest regressor and the artificial neural network predicted the behavior of our field ROP with a maximum absolute mean error of 3.98, corresponding to 19% of the ROP’s standard deviatio... Public Transport Decarbonization via Urban Bus Fleet Replacement in Portugal
Paulo J. G. Ribeiro, José F. G. Mendes.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bus fleet, decarbonization, electric buses, green public transport, zero-emissions.
The transport sector accounts for around one-quarter of the GHG emissions in Europe, and, in Portugal, it represents almost one-third of the total emissions to the atmosphere. Unfortunately, these emissions have increased in recent years. Hence, cities and countries need plans to decarbonize their public transport fleets, and, more specifically, to replace fossil-fueled buses with electric buses that produce zero CO2 emissions. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to present a method to decarbonize the bus fleet in Portugal by a scheduled replacement of the current fleet, which is fueled by fossil fuels, with a completely electric fleet, in fourteen years. The study shows that it is possible to replace all Portuguese urban bus fleets with electric vehicles considering that all vehicles will be replaced when reaching the age of 14 years. Replacing the urban bus fleet with zero-emission buses would aid policymakers and bus companies to reduce the GHGs, and therefore contribute to fu... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: heliothermic power, hybrid solar power, Solar Thermal, thermodynamic and economic optimization, waste heat recovery.
Heliothermic technologies are affected by their low density, intermittence and low economic competitiveness. Hybrid solar−waste heat power systems can increase plant conversion efficiency and power generation while reducing intermittence. This study focused on the development of software (AERES) to economically optimize hybrid solar−waste heat power systems in terms of technology selection, sizing, operating conditions and power block characteristics. The technologies considered for algorithm selection were (i) heat exchangers that recover a wide range of waste heat sources, (ii) non-concentrating and concentrating solar collectors (a flat plate, an evacuated tube, a linear Fresnel and a parabolic trough), (iii) organic Rankine cycle power blocks and (iv) storage tanks (direct thermal storage systems). The last two technologies were represented by surrogate models so that a large number of decision variables could be optimized simultaneously. The optimization considered local climate c... [more]

Bing Cheng, Haibo Wang, Qi Zong, Mengxiang Wang, Pengfei Gao, Nao Lv.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cavity forming mechanism, center holes, field application experiment, numerical simulation, supplementary blasting, wedge cutting blasting method.
To acquire a satisfying cutting effect during medium-length hole blasting driving of rock tunnels, an improved wedge cutting blasting method with supplementary blasting of the center holes was proposed. Initially, the cavity forming mechanism of the improved cutting method was analyzed theoretically. The results suggested that cutting hole blasting could realize the ejection of rock within the range from free face to critical cutting depth, and hence reduce the restraining force of the center hole blasting, and the supplementary blasting of the center holes could further accomplish the expulsion of the residuary rock. Subsequently, simulation of the improved cutting method was implemented to exhibit the stress wave evolution and reveal the stress field distribution. The simulation results indicated that cutting hole blasting could cause the preliminary failure of the residuary rock, and center hole blasting could strengthen the stress field intensity in 1.8−2.5 m in order to aggravate... Intelligent Modeling of the Incineration Process in Waste Incineration Power Plant Based on Deep Learning
Lianhong Chen, Chao Wang, Rigang Zhong, Jin Wang, Zheng Zhao.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, intelligent modeling, variable selection, waste-to-energy.
The incineration process in waste-to-energy plants is characterized by high levels of inertia, large delays, strong coupling, and nonlinearity, which makes accurate modeling difficult. Therefore, an intelligent modeling method for the incineration process in waste-to-energy plants based on deep learning is proposed. First, the output variables were selected from the three aspects of safety, stability and economy. The initial variables related to the output variables were determined by mechanism analysis and the input variables were finally determined by removing invalid and redundant variables through the Lasso algorithm. Secondly, each delay time was calculated, and a multi-input and multi-output model was established on the basis of deep learning. Finally, the deep learning model was compared and verified with traditional models, including LSSVM, CNN, and LSTM. The simulation results show that the intelligent model of the incineration process in the waste-to-energy plant based on dee... [more]

Emil Cazacu, Lucian-Gabriel Petrescu, Valentin Ioniță.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric critical equipment, experimental device, induction motors, power quality, predictive maintenance.
The paper proposed an innovative predictive maintenance system, designated to monitor and diagnose critical electrical equipment (generally large power electric motors) within industrial electrical installations. A smart and minimally invasive system is designed and developed. Its scope is to evaluate continuously the essential operating parameters (electrical, thermal, and mechanical) of the investigated equipment. It manages to report the deviations of inspected machine operating parameters values from the rated ones. The system also suggests the potential cause of these abnormal variations along with possible means (if the defect is identified in a database, constantly updated with each appearance of a malfunction). The developed maintenance device generates an operating report of the analyzed equipment, in which the values of power quality and energy indicators are computed and interpreted. Additionally, real-time remote transmission of analyzed data is facilitated, making them acc... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: borehole heat exchanger, collector, geoenergetics, grout, Optimization, shallow geothermal energy, Technoeconomic Analysis.
The reduction of CO2 emissions has become a global concern. In this regard, the EU intends to cut CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to those of 1990. The utilization of shallow geothermal energy (SGE) in EU countries is considered the most effective measure for decarbonizing heating and cooling. SGE systems utilize heat energy collected from the earth’s crust to provide secure, clean, and ubiquitous energy. This paper provides a literature review on the use of SGE for heating and cooling purposes. The latest advances in materials, new innovative structures, and techno-economic optimization approaches have been discussed in detail. Shallow geothermal energy’s potential is first introduced, and the innovative borehole structures to improve performance and reduce installation cost is outlined. This is followed by an extensive survey of different types of conventional and thermally enhanced collectors and grouts. Attention is mainly given to the techno-economic analysis and optimizatio... Rossano Musca, Francisco Gonzalez-Longatt, Cesar A. Gallego Sánchez.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: damping, electromechanical oscillations, grid-following, grid-forming, inertia, phase-locked loop, power converters, virtual synchronous machine.
The oscillatory behaviour of the power system is an aspect that is significantly affected by the increasing integration of converter-based generation sources. Several works address the impact of non-synchronous generation on the operation of the system from different points of view, but only a few studies focus on power-frequency oscillations with a prevalence of generation sources interfaced through power electronics. A lack of research can be found in particular in the comparative analysis of the two main control strategies for power converters, namely grid-following and grid-forming. The article aims to contribute to this direction, starting from a theoretical analysis of the two control structures and then examining the case study of an existing transmission system. The research provides a specific insight into the fundamental aspects related to synchronisation mechanism and inertial capabilities of both grid-following with synthetic inertia and grid-forming controls. Maliyamu Abudureheman, Qingzhe Jiang, Xiucheng Dong, Cong Dong.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 emissions, energy rebound effect, regional heterogeneity, system generalized method of moments.
Enhancing energy efficiency is globally regarded as an effective way to reduce carbon emissions. In recent years, the energy efficiency of China has gradually improved; however, energy consumption and CO2 emissions are still increasing. To better understand the reasons for this, we evaluated the energy rebound effect (RE) of 30 provinces in China over the period 2001−2017 by employing stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and the system generalized method of moments (system-GMM) approach, and explored the extent to which the RE affects CO2 emissions. Asymmetric and regional heterogeneity analyses were also conducted. The results indicate that the national average RE was 90.47% in the short run, and 78.17% in the long run, during the sample period. Most of the provinces experienced a partial RE, with a backfire effect occurring in some provinces such as Guangxi and Henan. The RE was associated with significant increases in CO2 emissions; specifically, a 1% increase in the short-run RE led... [more]

Effect of Temperature Change on Acoustic Emission Signal in IGBT Transistors of Marine Propulsion System Converters
Radosław Gordon, Artur Bejger.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acoustic emission, gate turn-off thyristor, power electronics, sensor, transducer.
The article presents the results of tests related to failure analysis and finding ways to diagnose used semiconductor elements, among others, in power electronics converter systems on vessels and offshore facilities (drilling and production rigs and wind turbines). Diagnostic relationships were found between the temperature change in the above systems and the signals generated in the form of elastic waves of acoustic emission. The authors confirmed the influence of the transistor’s working temperature on its amplitude-frequency spectrum of acoustic emission signals emitted. The range of ‘safe temperatures’ was considered which means temperatures that do not directly affect the damage of the component.

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: abiotic resource depletion, electricity mix, life cycle assessment, nuclear energy, nuclear waste, spent nuclear fuel, waste management.
Nuclear power can replace fossil fuels and will have a decisive impact on the change in the approach to conventional energy. However, nuclear (or radioactive) wastes are produced by the operation of the nuclear reactors should be safely and properly disposed of. This paper assesses the uranium resources and the global state of nuclear power plants and determines the energy mixes in different countries using the most nuclear energy. Furthermore, this paper analysed the nuclear waste management and disposal and the depletion of abiotic resources, and the primary energy sources of a basic production process using electricity mix and nuclear electricity for a basic production (PET bottle manufacturing) process. The life cycle assessment was completed by applying the GaBi 8.0 (version 10.6) software and the CML method. In this study, we limit our discussion to high-level nuclear waste (HLW) and spent nuclear fuel (SNF) waste. We do not consider waste generated from uranium mining and millin... [more]

Bin Huang, Xiaohan Nan, Cheng Fu, Weibo Liu, Wei Guo, Siqi Wang, Lu Zhang.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon–carbon double bond component crude oil, coalescence behavior, emulsified oil droplets, emulsion, saturated hydrocarbon component crude oil.
The microscopic interactions between oil droplets during the coalescence process have an important impact on the stability of the emulsion. In this paper, a model that can present the phenomenon of coalescence of oil droplets was established. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the stability of the emulsion. Combined with molecular dynamics simulation technology, the coalescence behaviors of emulsified oil droplets in fluids produced by oil wells were studied. Factors affecting the coalescence of emulsified oil droplets were analyzed. The results show that the fluid velocity was relatively high at the position where two oil droplets were close to each other. After the coalescence of oil droplets was completed, the emulsion system became stable. There was no obvious correlation between oil droplet size and coalescence time. When two adjacent oil droplets with different radii coalesced, the larger oil droplet moved a shorter distance overall. At the initial moment, there was a clear... [more]

Amaia de Ayala, María del Mar Solà.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: appliances, energy consumption, Energy Efficiency, energy label, in-depth interviews, purchasing decision-making.
The EU Energy Efficiency (EE) label for appliances, readjusted in March 2021 (Directive 2017/1369/EU), is a key instrument for nudging consumers towards more energy-efficient purchases. However, its effectiveness depends on its design, the information provided and consumers’ understanding of and trust in it. This paper seeks to contribute to the assessment of the EE label for appliances and to identify issues, potential improvements and challenges for successfully nudging consumers towards highly energy-efficient choices. To that end, 33 in-depth interviews have been conducted with three different groups (citizens, appliance retailers and experts in energy) to ascertain the opinions and experiences of different agents as to consumers’ preferences and opinions on EE and energy consumption. We focus on purchasing decision-making by Spanish consumers for the three main appliances: washing machines, fridges and dishwashers. The EE label for appliances seems to be well-known and reliable fo... [more]
Wettability of Tight Sandstone Reservoir and Its Impacts on the Oil Migration and Accumulation: A Case Study of Shahejie Formation in Dongying Depression, Bohai Bay Basin
Kunkun Jia, Jianhui Zeng, Xin Wang, Bo Li, Xiangcheng Gao, Kangting Wang.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capillary force, oil migration and accumulation, tight sandstone, wettability.
The migration and accumulation of oil in tight sandstone reservoirs are mainly controlled by capillary force. Due to the small pore radius and complex pore structure of tight sandstone reservoirs, the capillary force is very sensitive to wettability, so wettability significantly affects oil migration and accumulation. However, the study of oil migration and accumulation in tight sandstone reservoirs often needs to combine multiple methods, the process is complex, and the research methods of wettability are not uniform, so the mechanism of wettability affecting oil migration and accumulation is not clear. Taking the tight sandstone of the Shahejie Formation in the Dongying sag, Bohai Bay Basin, as the research object, the wettability characteristics of a tight sandstone reservoir and their influence on oil migration and accumulation were analyzed by means of a pore permeability test, XRD analysis, micro-CT experiment, contact angle tests, spontaneous imbibition experiments, and physical... Ying Zhong, Chao Zhou, Yipeng Shi.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: annular jet, heat transfer enhancement, jet impingement, nozzle shape modification, pressure loss.
The effects of nozzle shape modifications on the flow phenomena and heat transfer characteristics in annular jet impingement are investigated numerically. The numerical simulations are conducted applying the shear stress transport (SST) k−ω model in the ANSYS CFX. Two modified nozzles: the converging nozzle and the diverging nozzle, are investigated in this study, and the straight nozzle serves as the base case. The geometric parameters and settings are based on an annular jet ejected from an axial fan used for electronic cooling: the Reynolds number Re= 20,000 and the blockage ratio Br=0.35 in the computation, and the target plate is placed at three representative separation distances: H=0.5,2, and 4. Compared with the base nozzle, the converging nozzle can accelerate the cooling flow and promote turbulence to enhance local and overall heat transfer (about 20%) over the target surface. In addition, the converging nozzle reduces the sizes of the recirculation zones, and this promotes t... [more]

Peng Cheng, Xianming Xiao, Qizhang Fan, Ping Gao.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: burial depth, development potential, lacustrine shale, retained oil, the Dongying Sag.
The investigation of the shale oil development potential of the lower third section−upper fourth section (ES33−ES41) of the Eocene−Oligocene Shahejie Formation in the Dongying Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, eastern China, continues to be a scientific challenge. A total of 23 shale samples was collected from these strata, and the organic petrology, organic geochemistry, mineral composition, porosity, and pore structure of these samples and their relationships with the retained oils were investigated. The results indicated that these shales with type I−IIa kerogen are rich in lamalginite and its debris, and the Ro values of these shales range from 0.70% to 1.00%. The non-micropores (>2 nm) that are mainly developed from inorganic minerals are greater than the micropores ( 0.90%), and the siltstone or carbonate rock interlayer, especially with laminated or layered textures, will further control the sweet spot intervals of shale oil. This study provides new geological evidence for revealing the ret... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: agent-based model, discrete choice model, electric vehicles, market research, transport policy, willingness to pay.
Given the various advantages of electric vehicles compared to conventional gasoline vehicles in terms of energy efficiency and environmental pollution (among others), this paper studies the factors affecting customers’ willingness to purchase electric vehicles. An integrated discrete choice and agent-based approach is applied to model the customers’ choice for the valuation of electric vehicles based on the internal reference price. The agent-based model evaluates customers’ preferences for a number of personal and vehicle attributes, according to which vehicle they chose. Data from 376 respondents are collected to estimate a random-parameter logit model where customers are asked to reveal their preferences about five attributes of electric vehicles, including travel range, top speed, charge cost, government incentives, and price. The role of social networks of customers and their threshold purchase price is also examined in the agent-based model. The scenario simulation results indica... [more]

To convert signals and ensure that the temporal sequences and magnitudes reflect the laboratory settings, the ability to scale and project data is essential. To demonstrate this ability, Dynamical System Scaling (a methodology that enables systems to scale and project or extrapolate datasets to desired environments while conserving the observed transient behavior based on first principles) was applied to DETAIL’s thermocline thermal storage system in the Thermal Energy Distribution System. The thermocline system was successfully scaled and a test case was conducted to generate a do... [more]
Changes in Energy-Related Carbon Dioxide Emissions of the Agricultural Sector in Poland from 2000 to 2019
Zbigniew Gołaś.
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agricultural sector, CO2 emissions, decomposition analysis, energy consumption, logarithmic mean divisia index, Poland.
This paper analyzes the changes in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions related to energy consumption in the Polish agricultural sector between 2000 and 2019. Based on the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI), the changes in agricultural CO2 emissions are viewed in the context of changes in six factors, i.e., CO2 emission intensity, substitution of fossil fuels, penetration of renewable energies, energy intensity, labor productivity and number of employees. The analysis demonstrated that total energy consumption declined over the study period; this was related to a reduction in the intake of energy derived from solid fossil fuels (−1.05%), crude oil (−1.01%), electricity (−4.89%), and heat (−1.37%), and to an increased consumption of natural gas (5.78%) and biofuels (0.82%). Furthermore, it follows from the analysis that changes in CO2 emissions witnessed in that period were consistent with changes in energy consumption levels; this resulted from a negligible transformation of the energy mi... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: inner control layers (ICC), mayfly algorithm (MA), multi-objective optimization, outer control layers (OCL), proportional–integral (P.I.) controller, voltage source converter (VSC).
This scientific paper aims to increase the voltage source converter (VSC) control efficiency in a multi-terminal high voltage direct current (MTDC) network during dynamic operations. In the proposed study, the Mayfly algorithm (MA) is used to modify the control parameters of VSC stations. Traditional strategies that modify VSC control settings using approximate linear models fail to produce optimal results because VSCs are nonlinear characteristics of the MTDC system. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) may produce optimal outcomes, but it is prone to becoming stuck in a local optimum. To modify the proportional-integral (P.I.) control parameters of the VSC station, the Mayfly algorithm, a modified form of PSO, is used. The suggested algorithm’s objective function simultaneously optimizes both the outer and inner control layers. A four-terminal MTDC test system is developed in PSCAD/EMTDC to assess the benefits of the proposed algorithm. For VSCs, a comparison of classical, PSO, and prop... [more]
