Novel Single-Phase Short-Stroke Tubular Permanent Magnet Oscillating Machines with Partitioned Stator
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: cogging force, partitioned stator, permanent magnet, single phase, tubular machine.
This paper presents three novel configurations of single-phase (SP) short-stroke (SS) tubular permanent magnet oscillating machines (TPMOMs) with partitioned stator (PS), termed PS-SPSS-TPMOMs. The machine structures are described and the influence of permanent magnet pole alignment with either stator slot or stator tooth is investigated. It is found that the PM poles should be aligned with the stator slots in order to ease the oscillation. The electromagnetic performance of these proposed machines is analyzed and compared. The results show that such machines have the advantages of low mover mass and low magnet eddy current loss, compared with a conventional surface-mounted SPSS-TPMOM.

Photovoltaics Enabling Sustainable Energy Communities: Technological Drivers and Emerging Markets
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy collectives, energy communities, local energy markets, pricing schemes.
In this paper, we investigate the economic benefits of an energy community investing in small-scale photovoltaics (PVs) when local energy trading is operated amongst the community members. The motivation stems from the open research question on whether a community-operated local energy market can enhance the investment feasibility of behind-the-meter small-scale PVs installed by energy community members. Firstly, a review of the models, mechanisms and concepts required for framing the relevant concepts is conducted, while a clarification of nuances at important terms is attempted. Next, a tool for the investigation of the economic benefits of operating a local energy market in the context of an energy community is developed. We design the local energy market using state-of-the-art formulations, modified according to the requirements of the case study. The model is applied to an energy community that is currently under formation in a Greek municipality. From the various simulations that... [more]

Positive Correlations between Short-Term and Average Long-Term Fluctuations in Wind Power Output
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy system integration, flexibility, long-term fluctuations (LTFs), Renewable and Sustainable Energy, short-term fluctuations (STFs), wind power.
Wind power has been increasingly deployed in the last decade to decarbonize the electricity sector. Wind power output changes intermittently depending on weather conditions. In electrical power systems with high shares of variable renewable energy sources, such as wind power, system operators aim to respond flexibly to fluctuations in output. Here, we investigated very short-term fluctuations, short-term fluctuations (STFs), and long-term fluctuations (LTFs) in wind power output by analyzing historical output data for two northern and one southern balancing areas in Japan. We found a relationship between STFs and the average LTFs. The percentiles of the STFs in each month are approximated by linear functions of the monthly average LTFs. Furthermore, the absolute value of the slope of this function decreases with wind power capacity in the balancing area. The LTFs reflect the trend in wind power output. The results indicate that the flexibility required for power systems can be estimate... [more]

Simulation of Low Inertia Power Systems Based on Shifted Frequency Analysis
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: converter interfaced generation, dynamic phasors, low inertia, power electronics, real-time simulation, shifted frequency analysis.
New types of power system transients with lower time constants are emerging due to the replacement of synchronous generation with converter interfaced generation and are challenging the modeling approaches conventionally applied in power system simulation. Quasi-stationary simulations are based on classical phasor models, whereas EMT simulations calculate the instantaneous values of models in the time domain. In addition to these conventional modeling approaches, this paper investigates simulation based on dynamic phasor models, as has been proposed by the Shifted Frequency Analysis. The simulation accuracy of the three modeling approaches was analyzed for characteristic transients from the electromagnetic to the electromechanical phenomena range, including converter control as well as low inertia transients. The analysis was carried out for systems with converter interfaced and synchronous generation whilst considering the simulation step size as a crucial influence parameter. The res... [more]

Quenching Experiments with CrAl-coated Zircaloy Cladding in Reflooding Water Flows
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cladding, CrAl-coated Zr, quench curve, quenching, reflood, rewetting temperature, speed of quench front.
A quenching experiment is performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics and cooling performance of CrAl-coated Zircaloy (Zr) cladding in a water flow. The CrAl-coated Zr cladding is one of the accident tolerant fuels for light water reactors. The uncoated Zr cladding is also used in this quenching experiment for comparison. This experiment simulates reflood quenching of fuel rod during loss of coolant accident (LOCA) in nuclear power plant. The test conditions were determined to represent the peak cladding temperature, the coolant subcooling and the reflood velocity in the event of LOCA. The flow visualization showed the film boiling during early stage of reflood quenching and the transition to nucleate boiling. The film layer decreases as the coolant subcooling increases and becomes wavy as the reflood velocity increases. The CrAl-coated Zr cladding showed more wavy and thinner film than the uncoated Zr cladding. The rewetting temperature increases as the initial wall tem... [more]

Overview of Sustainable Aviation Fuels with Emission Characteristic and Particles Emission of the Turbine Engine Fueled ATJ Blends with Different Percentages of ATJ Fuel
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alcohol-to-jet, alternative fuel, emission, particles, particulate matter, SAF.
The following article focuses on sustainable aviation fuels, which include first and second generation biofuels and other non-biomass fuels that meet most of environmental, operational and physicochemical requirements. Several of the requirements for sustainable aviation fuels are discussed in this article. The main focus was on researching the alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) alternative fuel. The tests covered the emission of harmful gaseous compounds with the Semtech DS analyzer, as well as the number and mass concentration of particles of three fuels: reference fuel Jet A-1, a mixture of Jet A-1 and 30% of ATJ fuel, and mixture of Jet A-1 and 50% of ATJ fuel. The number concentration of particles allowed us to calculate, inter alia, the corresponding particle number index and particle mass index. The analysis of the results made it possible to determine the effect of the content of alternative fuel in a mixture with conventional fuel on the emission of harmful exhaust compounds and the concent... Research on Differential Protection of Generator Based on New Braking Mode
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: differential protection, generator protection, longitudinal impedance, phase-to-phase fault, winding structure.
In view of the difficulties in coordination between reliability and sensitivity of conventional generator differential protection, this paper presents a novel generator differential protection scheme based on a new braking method. On the basis of the mathematical model of the field-circuit coupling method and the electrical network cascade characteristics, the stator windings were combined and decoupled by the improved six-sequence component method to eliminate electromagnetic coupling between winding coils. In accordance with the basic characteristics of longitudinal impedance, the function of sub-item discrimination was realized. Numerous simulations and the up-to-date dynamic experiments showed that the proposed method has good state discrimination ability and can effectively resist the influence of current transformer saturation. Thus, it has an excellent prospect for engineering promotion.

The RES in the Countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States: Potential and Production from 2015 to 2019
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Commonwealth of Independent States, effectiveness, international cooperation, management, renewable energy source (RES).
Amidst the changes and adjustments of the international energy situation, the leading trend is to shift from fossil fuels to low-carbon fuels, and ultimately, to enter the era of sustainable energy, based mainly on renewable energy. The ongoing changes in global security of energy supply and the high volatility of fossil energy prices also stimulate investment in alternative energy sources, making renewable energy sources (RES) one of the rapidly growing elements in the global energy system. This article fills the research gap by analyzing the potential of using renewable energy in the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in the years 2015−2018. The authors address the energy potential in the years 2015−2019, and energy consumption in the years 2015−2018 as the potential of RES in the CIS countries was not researched after 2014. Please note that the study covers the CIS countries, along with Georgia and Ukraine, which are no longer formal members of the Community,... [more]

Does Carbon Risk Matter? Evidence of Carbon Premium in EU Energy-Intensive Companies
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: carbon risk, climate change, European Union Emissions Trading Scheme, stock returns.
In this paper we have assessed the impact of the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) on the level of the carbon premium. The aim of the study is to determine whether there is a stable carbon premium in energy-intensive sectors. Unlike other studies, our research sample included not only companies in the energy sector, but also entities classified as energy-intensive. In the research, we used our own criterion for allocating companies to a clean and dirty portfolio, which made it possible to make the estimation of the carbon premium more resistant to changes in the rules for allocation of emission allowances. We detected a positive, statistically significant carbon premium in the years 2003−2012 and a negative one in the years 2013−2015, but we did not detect a statistically significant carbon premium in the period 2016−2019. This means that there are no grounds for concluding that there is a stable, positive carbon premium for energy-intensive companies subject to the EU... [more]

Application of Fractional-Order Calculus to Improve the Mathematical Model of a Two-Mass System with a Long Shaft
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Caputo-Fabrizio operator, electric drive, fractional calculus, full state vector control, mathematical model, synthesis of control system, two-mass system.
Based on the general theory of fractional order derivatives and integrals, application of the Caputo−Fabrizio operator is analyzed to improve a mathematical model of a two-mass system with a long shaft and concentrated parameters. Thus, the real transmission of complex electric drives, which consist of long shafts with a sufficient degree of adequacy, is presented as a two-mass system. Such a system is described by ordinary fractional order differential equations. In addition, it is well known that an elastic mechanical wave, propagating along a drive transmission with a long stiff shaft, creates a retardation effect on distribution of the time−space angular velocity, the rotation angle of the shaft, and its elastic moment. The approach proposed in the current work helps to take in account the moving elastic wave along the shaft of electric drive mechanism. On this basis, it is demonstrated that the use of the fractional order integrator in the model for the elastic moment enables it t... [more]

A Hybrid Method to Evaluate Soil Liquefaction Potential of Seabed at Offshore Wind Farm in Taiwan
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Monte Carlo simulation, offshore wind farm, risk assessment, soil liquefaction, SPT–CPT correlation.
This paper undertakes liquefaction analysis with simplified procedures with standard penetration test (SPT) data and cone penetration test (CPT) data obtained from an offshore wind farm in the Changhua area. The soil liquefaction resistance calculated by the SPT-based simplified procedure suggested by the Japan Railway Association was in agreement with the laboratory results. The CPT is widely used in the site investigation of offshore wind farms. However, Taiwan’s registered professional engineers are still familiar with soil liquefaction analysis for offshore wind farms using SPT-based methods. Hence, a hybrid method that incorporates an SPT−CPT correlation into the New Japan Road Association (NJRA) method is proposed to evaluate the soil liquefaction potential for offshore wind farms in Taiwan. In the case studies of soil liquefaction with five groups of adjacent boreholes in Changhua’s offshore wind farms, the hybrid method shows that the soil liquefaction potential with CPT data i... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy consumption, environmental impact, EUED, GWP, refrigeration, SARS-CoV-2, TEWI, vaccines.
This article considers the ideal storage conditions for multiple vaccine brands, such as Pfizer, Moderna, CoronaVac, Oxford−AstraZeneca, Janssen COVID-19 and Sputnik V. Refrigerant fluid options for each storage condition, thermal load to cool each type of vaccine and environmental impacts of refrigerants are compared. An energy simulation using the EUED (energy usage effectiveness design) index was developed. The Oxford−AstraZeneca, Janssen COVID-19 and CoronaVac vaccines show 9.34-times higher energy efficiency than Pfizer. In addition, a TEWI (total equivalent warming impact) simulation was developed that prioritizes direct environmental impacts and indirect in refrigeration. From this analysis, it is concluded that the cold storage of Oxford−AstraZeneca, Janssen COVID-19 and CoronaVac vaccines in Brazil generates 35-times less environmental impact than the Pfizer vaccine.

Power Line Communications for Automotive High Voltage Battery Systems: Channel Modeling and Coexistence Study with Battery Monitoring
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery management systems, coexistence study, electric vehicles, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, lithium-ion battery, physical layer model, power line communications.
As electric vehicles are gaining increasing worldwide interest, advances in driving range and safety become critical. Modern automotive battery management systems (BMS) compete with challenging performance and safety requirements and need to monitor a large amount of battery parameters. In this paper, we propose power line communications (PLC) for high voltage (HV) traction batteries to reduce the BMS wiring effort. By modeling a small-scale battery pack for frequencies up to 300 MHz, we predict the PLC channel transfer characteristics and validate the results using a PLC hardware demonstrator employing a narrowband single-carrier modulation. The results demonstrate that battery PLC is a demanding task due to low access impedances and cell coupling effects, yet transfer characteristics can be improved by optimal impedance matching. PLC for HV BMS not only saves weight and cost, but also improves flexibility in BMS design. PLC enables single-cell monitoring techniques such as online ele... [more]

The Impact of Smart Prepaid Metering on Non-Technical Losses in Ghana
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: difference-in-differences, electricity theft, non-technical losses, quantile regression, smart meters.
The high incidence of electricity theft, meter tampering, meter bypassing, reading errors, and defective and aged meters, among others, increases utility losses, especially non-technical losses (NTL). A utility in Ghana piloted a non-technical loss reduction program in 2019 to replace postpaid meters with anti-tamper, anti-fraud, and anti-theft smart prepaid meters. By using customer-level residential billing panel data from 2018 to 2019 obtained from the utility, we assess the effectiveness of this program using the difference-in-differences fixed-effect approach. On average, the results indicated that the reported amount of customers’ monthly electricity consumption increases by 13.2% when any tampered postpaid meter is replaced with a smart prepaid meter, indicating the NTLs by customers. We further employed quantile difference-in-differences regression and observed that reported energy consumption has increased for all households except those at the lower quantile (25th quantile).... Keywords: energy efficient buildings, historical building, polystyrene waste, recyclable insulation material, thermal insulation from the inside.
The following article presents comprehensive research results for the insulation material based on polystyrene wastes. The presented product has the form of plates to be applied for thermal insulation of external envelopes from the inside. The laboratory tests were focused on the determination of basic technical parameters for this type of materials, i.e., thermal conductivity coefficient, diffusion resistance coefficient, reaction to fire, material sorption, and strength characteristics. For the recycling material, the obtained thermal conductivity value was 0.055 [W/mK]. The diffusion resistance coefficient was 5 [−], and therefore, this component has been qualified to a group of solutions that allow for interstitial condensation in the envelope. For the developed product, in situ tests were carried out on the actual wall system in a historical building. Based on the research, temperature and humidity profiles were obtained in the selected planes of the envelope. The performance of t... [more]

Feedback-Linearization-Based Fuel-Cell Adaptive-Control Paradigm in a Microgrid Using a Wavelet-Entrenched NeuroFuzzy Framework
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: feedback linearization, hybrid power system, Laguerre wavelet, microgrid, recurrent NeuroFuzzy, SOFC.
The article portrays an adaptive control paradigm for the swift response of a solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC) in a grid-connected microgrid. The control scheme is based on an adaptive feedback-linearization-embedded fully recurrent NeuroFuzzy Laguerre wavelet control (FBL-FRNF-Lag-WC) framework. The nonlinear functions of feedback linearization (FBL) are estimated using a fully recurrent NeuroFuzzy Laguerre wavelet control (FRNF-Lag-WC) architecture with a recurrent Gaussian membership function in the antecedent part and a recurrent Laguerre wavelet in the consequent part, respectively. The performance of the proposed control scheme is validated for various stability, quality, and reliability factors obtained through a simulation testbed implemented in MATLAB/Simulink. The proposed scheme is compared against adaptive NeuroFuzzy, PID, and adaptive PID (aPID) control schemes using different performance parameters for a grid-connected load over 24 h.

Optimal Design of A 12-Slot/10-Pole Six-Phase SPM Machine with Different Winding Layouts for Integrated On-Board EV Battery Charging
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical modeling, battery chargers, electric vehicles, finite element analysis (FEA), integrated on-board chargers, magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC).
The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) has received global support as initiatives and legislation are introduced in support of a zero-emissions future envisaged for transportation. Integrated on-board battery chargers (OBCs), which exploit the EV drivetrain elements into the charging process, are considered an elegant solution to achieve this widespread adoption of EVs. Surface-mounted permanent-magnet (SPM) machines have emerged as plausible candidates for EV traction due to their nonsalient characteristics and ease of manufacturing. From an electric machine design perspective, parasitic torque ripple and core losses need to be minimized in integrated OBCs during both propulsion and charging modes. The optimal design of EV propulsion motors has been extensively presented in the literature; however, the performance of the optimal traction machine under the charging mode of operation for integrated OBCs has not received much attention in the literature thus far. April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: building envelope materials, building skin, building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), climate change, solar radiation components.
The business model of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) is developing expeditiously and BIPV will soon be recognised as a building envelope material for the entire building skins, among other alternatives such as brick, wood, stone, metals, etc. This paper investigates the effect of climate on the solar radiation components on building skins and BIPV materials in the northern hemisphere. The selected cities are Stavanger in Norway, Bern in Switzerland, Rome in Italy, and Dubai in the UAE. The study showed that for all the studied climates, the average incident radiation on the entire building skins is slightly more than the average incident radiation on the east or west facades, regardless of the orientations of the building facades. Furthermore, the correlation between solar radiation components and different BIPV technologies is discussed in this paper. It is also found that when it comes to the efficiency of different BIPV cells, the impact of the climate on some of the BIPV... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer, jet impingement, minijet heat exchanger, non-flat surface, OpenFOAM, ζ-f RANS model.
The jet impingement phenomenon plays an important role among the heat transfer intensification methods. Very often its application and analyses refer to simple flat surfaces, while there is a lack of information in the literature for cases addressing curved surfaces. In the present work, the single jet impingement on the non-flat (concave and convex) surface is studied for a wide range of geometries, which originate from the mini-jet heat-exchanger design. The numerical simulations were performed by an advanced ζ-f turbulence model implemented in the open-source OpenFOAM (ESI-OpenCFD Ltd, Bracknell, United Kingdom) code. Noticeable differences in the phenomena occurring on the convex and concave surfaces were identified in the stagnation zone. Besides, the existence and location of the secondary peak in the Nusselt number distribution differed between the cases. These distributions were influenced by the shape of geometry, which determined flow characteristics and resulting heat transf... [more]

A Data-Mining Approach for Wind Turbine Fault Detection Based on SCADA Data Analysis Using Artificial Neural Networks
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural networks, condition monitoring, Fault Detection, gearbox, generator, predictive maintenance, wind turbine.
Wind energy has shown significant growth in terms of installed power in the last decade. However, one of the most critical problems for a wind farm is represented by Operation and Maintenance (O&M) costs, which can represent 20−30% of the total costs related to power generation. Various monitoring methodologies targeted to the identification of faults, such as vibration analysis or analysis of oils, are often used. However, they have the main disadvantage of involving additional costs as they usually entail the installation of other sensors to provide real-time control of the system. In this paper, we propose a methodology based on machine learning techniques using data from SCADA systems (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). Since these systems are generally already implemented on most wind turbines, they provide a large amount of data without requiring extra sensors. In particular, we developed models using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to characterize the behavior of some o... [more]

Participatory Impetus for and Forms of Citizens’ Co-Owned Power Plants: Cases from Higashi-Ohmi, Japan
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: co-owned power plant, energy transition, participation, regional currency.
Citizen-led local participation is considered the key to a successful energy transition, and citizens’ co-owned power plants are an alternative and representative form of local participation. The extent to which citizens’ co-owned power plants can embody “locality, democracy, participation, energy autonomy, poverty reduction, and energy justice” has led to many controversial discussions. In response to these meaningful questions, this study argues for the focus to return to the impetus and driving forces of local participation in energy. This study proposes six possibilities for the impetus of local energy participation and the types of participation they may create. In the case analysis of the Higashi-Ohmi Model, in addition to the compound disaster of the 11 March 2011 earthquake and the transformation of the Japanese power grid, the driving factors depend on the self-consciousness of local promoters who insist on independence from policy influence. Fast Pyrolysis of Cellulose by Infrared Heating
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: cellulose, fast pyrolysis, glycolaldehyde, infrared heating, levoglucosan.
The fast pyrolysis of cellulose produces levoglucosan (LG), but secondary pyrolysis reactions tend to reduce the yield. The present study assessed the fast pyrolysis of cellulose by infrared (IR) heating under nitrogen flow. Because the nitrogen was not efficiently heated, gaseous LG was immediately cooled, resulting in a maximum yield of 52.7% under optimized conditions. Slow nitrogen flow and a high IR power level provided a greater gas yield by raising the temperature of the cellulose, and the formation of CO could be used as an indicator of the gasification of LG. Glycolaldehyde (GA) was the major byproduct, and the GA yield remained relatively constant under all conditions. Accordingly, GA was not a secondary product from the LG but was likely produced from the reducing ends of cellulose and other intermediate carbohydrates. The pyrolysis of cellulose proceeded within a narrow region of carbonized material that absorbed IR radiation more efficiently. The bulk of each cellulose sam... [more]

Influence of Hydrate-Forming Gas Pressure on Equilibrium Pore Water Content in Soils
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas hydrates, ice, kaolinite clay, methane, nonclathrated water, Phase Equilibria, pore water, porous media, thermodynamic calculations.
Natural gas hydrates (primarily methane hydrates) are considered to be an important and promising unconventional source of hydrocarbons. Most natural gas hydrate accumulations exist in pore space and are associated with reservoir rocks. Therefore, gas hydrate studies in porous media are of particular interest, as well as, the phase equilibria of pore hydrates, including the determination of equilibrium pore water content (nonclathrated water). Nonclathrated water is analogous to unfrozen water in permafrost soils and has a significant effect on the properties of hydrate-bearing reservoirs. Nonclathrated water content in hydrate-saturated porous media will depend on many factors: pressure, temperature, gas composition, the mineralization of pore water, etc. In this paper, the study is mostly focused on the effect of hydrate-forming gas pressure on nonclathrated water content in hydrate-bearing soils. To solve this problem, simple thermodynamic equations were proposed which require data... [more]

In recent years, sudden global energy demand has led to the gradual exhaustion of fossil fuel, the world’s main energy resource. With the negative impact of fossil fuel on the environment, governments and organizations have increased R&D funding on renewable energy resources such as solar and wave energy. Vietnam has a great potential for developing wave energy projects owing to the presence of a long coastline and vast ocean. Choosing an optimal location for wave-based power plant projects is a multicriteria decision that requires understanding the quantitative and qualitative elements for assessing the balance of factors when trying to reach the most accurate result. This study proposes a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model, fuzzy-analytic hierarchical process (FAHP), and weighted aggregated sum product assessment (WASPAS) in evaluating potential wave energy stations at the Vietnamese coastline. Keywords: drying of the transformer, oil-paper insulation, synthetic ester.
This research was carried out during the realization of a project with the aim of developing a method of drying cellulose insulation in power transformers by using synthetic ester. Unfortunately, during the drying process, the ester is systematically contaminated with mineral oil, which reduces its water absorption. Information on the oil concentration in the mixture is needed in two cases: when deciding how to treat the mixture, and during the treatment. The article presents two methods: (1) based on the measurement of the mixture density, and (2) based on the measurement of a capacitor immersed in the mixture. The most important scientific achievement of the work is the proof, by way of experiment, of the existence of a relationship between the concentration of mineral oil and (1) the density of the mixture, and (2) the capacity of the capacitor immersed in it. These relations are presented in the form of equations for which the error calculus showed that the uncertainty of measureme... [more]
