April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: air-type PVT collector, energy analysis, exergy analysis, ISO 9806 standard, outdoor testing
BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaic) system is a building envelope technology that generates energy by converting solar energy into electricity. However, after producing electrical energy, the remaining solar energy is transferred as heat, raising the temperature at the rear of the BIPV module, and reducing electrical efficiency. On the other hand, a PVT (Photovoltaic Thermal) collector is a device that generates electricity from a PV module and at the same time uses the heat transferred to the air layer inside the collector. In general, the performance of air-type PVT collectors is based on energy analysis using the first law of thermodynamics. Since this performance does not take into account the loss amount, it is not the actual amount of power generation and preheat of the collector that can be used. Therefore, an exergy analysis based on the second law of thermodynamics considering the amount of energy loss must be performed. In this paper, an air-type PVT collector to which pe... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: artificial clean fog test, discharges, dry bands, monitoring, partial arcs, textured insulator
The aim of this study is the presentation of the results of an in-lab comparative study of electrical and thermal monitoring of artificially polluted, HTV-textured silicone rubber insulators, with different pollution levels. This work is a preliminary study of an in-situ monitoring of 400 kV SiR textured in a polluted environment. The results showed that the rms leakage current magnitude and pulses, and the average dissipated power depended on the pollution levels and the dry-bands formation. The discharge activity and their nature are governed by the pollution level and the voltage. A differentiation and a quantification between dry-band discharge onset and dry-band arc inception is highlighted.

Keywords: allylic radicals, H-atom abstraction, quantum chemistry, rate constants, thermochemistry
The 1-methylallyl (C4H71-3) allylic radical is an important intermediate species in oxidation of linear C4 unsaturated hydrocarbons (1-butene, 2-butene, and 1,3-butadiene). This study reports the first high-level quantum chemical calculations for an undisclosed reaction class of this radical at intermediate to high temperatures: direct H-atom abstraction from terminal methyl group by molecular oxygen. Moreover, we systematically calculated rate constants for primary, secondary, and tertiary H-atom abstraction from the C4, C5, and C6 allylic radicals, respectively. Our results can be further used as rate rules for kinetic model development of unsaturated hydrocarbon oxidation. All calculations were implemented using two different ab initio solvers: Gaussian and ORCA, three sets of ab initio methods, and two different kinetic solvers: MultiWell and PAPR. Temperature dependent rate constants and thermochemistry were carried out based on transition state theory and statistical thermodynami... [more]

Keywords: Energy Efficiency, genetic algorithms, optimal controls, peak demand, residential buildings, switchable insulation systems, variable SHGC, variable U-value, windows
This paper evaluates the potential energy use and peak demand savings associated with optimal controls of switchable transparent insulation systems (STIS) applied to smart windows for US residential buildings. The optimal controls are developed based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) to identify the automatic settings of the dynamic shades. First, switchable insulation systems and their operation mechanisms are briefly described when combined with smart windows. Then, the GA-based optimization approach is outlined to operate switchable insulation systems applied to windows for a prototypical US residential building. The optimized controls are implemented to reduce heating and cooling energy end-uses for a house located four US locations, during three representative days of swing, summer, and winter seasons. The performance of optimal controller is compared to that obtained using simplified rule-based control sets to operate the dynamic insulation systems. The analysis results indicate that opt... [more]

Keywords: complex particle shapes, fixed-bed reactor, heat transfer, Process Intensification, wall structures
Process intensification of catalytic fixed-bed reactors is of vital interest and can be conducted on different length scales, ranging from the molecular scale to the pellet scale to the plant scale. Particle-resolved computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to characterize different reactor designs regarding optimized heat transport characteristics on the pellet scale. Packings of cylinders, Raschig rings, four-hole cylinders, and spheres were investigated regarding their impact on bed morphology, fluid dynamics, and heat transport, whereby for the latter particle shape, the influence of macroscopic wall structures on the radial heat transport was also studied. Key performance indicators such as the global heat transfer coefficient and the specific pressure drop were evaluated to compare the thermal performance of the different designs. For plant-scale intensification, effective transport parameters that are needed for simplified pseudo-homogeneous two-dimensional plug flow models we... [more]

Keywords: concentrated photovoltaic, finite element method, overall efficiency, phase change material, thermal efficiency
In this work, temperature regulation and electrical output of a concentrated photovoltaic system coupled with a phase change material (CPVPCM) system is investigated and compared with a single sun crystalline photovoltaic (PV) system. A fully coupled thermal-optical-electrical model has been developed in-house to conduct the simulation studies for actual weather conditions of Doha (Qatar) and selected phase change materials (PCMs). The selected PCMs are lauric acid, RT47, S-series salt, STL47, ClimSelTM C48, RT54, RT60, RT62, and RT64. An optical concentration ratio of 20× is considered on a 15 mm wide crystalline silicon cell. The temperature evolution, thermal energy storage and electrical output of the CPVPCM system are obtained for 48-hour simulations with representative weather conditions for each month of a typical meteorological year (TMY). Results and overall thermal and electrical efficiency are compared for each PCM. In brief, the CPVPCM system with S-series salt performs bet... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: rotor effectiveness, rotor experimental testing, Savonius rotor, small wind turbines, vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT)
Savonius rotors are large and heavy because they use drag force for propulsion. This leads to a larger investment in comparison to horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) rotors using lift forces. A simple construction of the Savonius rotor is preferred to reduce the production effort. Therefore, it is proposed here to use single-segment rotors of high elongation. Nevertheless, this rotor type must be compared with a multi-segment rotor to prove that the simplification does not deteriorate the effectiveness. The number of segments affects the aerodynamic performance of the rotor, however, the results shown in the literature are inconsistent. The paper presents a new observation that the relation between the effectiveness of single- and multi-segment rotors depends on the wind velocity. A single-segment rotor becomes significantly more effective than a four-segment rotor at low wind speeds. At high wind speeds, the effectiveness of both rotors becomes similar.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: correlation equation, free convection, horizontal cylinder, nanofluids
The results of free convection heat transfer investigation from a horizontal, uniformly heated tube immersed in a nanofluid are presented. Experiments were performed with five base fluids, i.e., ethylene glycol (EG), distilled water (W) and the mixtures of EG and water with the ratios of 60/40, 50/50, 40/60 by volume, so the Rayleigh (Ra) number range was 3 × 104 ≤ Ra ≤ 1.3 × 106 and the Prandtl (Pr) number varied from 4.4 to 176. Alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticles were tested at the mass concentrations of 0.01, 0.1 and 1%. Enhancement as well as deterioration of heat transfer performance compared to the base fluids were detected depending on the composition of the nanofluid. Based on the experimental results obtained, a correlation equation that describes the dependence of the average Nusselt (Nu) number on the Ra number, Pr number and concentration of nanoparticles is proposed.

Keywords: ANN modeling, biogas, Biomass, Diesel, dual fuel, emissions
Compression ignition (CI) engines are popular in the transport sector because of their high compression ratio. However, in recent years, it has become a major concern from an environmental point of view because of the emission and depleting fossil fuel. The advanced combustion concept has been a popular research topic in the CI engine. Low-temperature combustion with alternate fuel has helped in reducing the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and soot emission of the engine. Biogas is a popular substitute of energy especially deduced from biomass because of its clean combustion properties, as well it being a renewable energy source compared to non-renewable diesel resources. In experiments with dual fuel, i.e., conventional diesel and alternate fuel (biogas) were carried out through them. In the present study, an artificial neural network model was used to estimate emissions and check the attributes of performance. Different algorithms and training functions were used to train the models. Howeve... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon nanotube, composite, iron oxide, microwave-solvothermal process, supercapacitor
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are being increasingly studied as electrode materials for supercapacitors (SCs) due to their high electronic conductivity and chemical and mechanical stability. However, their energy density and specific capacitance have not reached the commercial stage due to their electrostatic charge storage system via a non-faradic mechanism. Moreover, magnetite (Fe3O4) exhibits higher specific capacitance originating from its pseudocapacitive behaviour, while it has irreversible volume expansion during cycling. Therefore, a very interesting and facile strategy to arrive at better performance and stability is to integrate CNTs and Fe3O4. In this study, we demonstrate the microwave-solvothermal process for the synthesis of Fe3O4 nanoparticles uniformly grown on a CNT composite as an electrode for SCs. The synthesized Fe3O4/CNT composite delivers a reversible capacitance of 187.1 F/g at 1 A/g, superior rate capability by maintaining 61.6% of 10 A/g (vs. 1 A/g), and cycling sta... [more]

A lithium-ion capacitor (LiC) is one of the most promising technologies for grid applications, which combines the energy storage mechanism of an electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) and a lithium-ion battery (LiB). This article presents an optimal thermal management system (TMS) to extend the end of life (EoL) of LiC technology considering different active and passive cooling methods. The impact of different operating conditions and stress factors such as high temperature on the LiC capacity degradation is investigated. Later, optimal passive TMS employing a heat pipe cooling system (HPCS) is developed to control the LiC cell temperature. Finally, the effect of the proposed TMS on the lifetime extension of the LiC is explained. Moreover, this trend is compared to the active cooling system using liquid-cooled TMS (LCTMS). The results demonstrate that the LiC cell temperature can be controlled by employing a proper TMS during the cycle aging test under 150 A current rate. The cell’s to... [more]

Keywords: electromagnetic interference, leakage current, predictive modeling of CMOS inverters, VLSI systems
In this paper, a predictive model is developed to characterize the impact of high-frequency electromagnetic interference (EMI) on the leakage current of CMOS integrated circuits. It is shown that the frequency dependence can be easily described by a transfer function that depends only on a few dominant parasitic elements. The developed analytical model is successfully compared against measurement data from devices fabricated using 180 nm, 130 nm, and 65 nm standard CMOS processes through TSMC. Based on the predictive model, the impact of EMI on leakage current in a CMOS inverter is reduced by increasing the frequency from 10 MHz to 4 GHz.

Keywords: core loss, finite element method (FEM), linear machines, linear magnetic gear, permanent magnet machines
In this study, analysis of core-loss occurring in the magnetic flux modulation core of a linear magnetic gear and the core of each mover is presented, using an analytical method. Losses in electric machines were generally calculated and analyzed using the finite element method (FEM). However, in the case of core-loss, the exact loss value could not be calculated using FEM data. Therefore, we considered the harmonic component of the air-gap magnetic flux density waveform with the modified Steinmetz equation, and performed a more accurate core-loss analysis with magnetic behavior analysis. Thus, we performed a calculated core-loss characteristic comparison with the FEM and the modified Steinmetz equation.

The steel industry is among the highest carbon-emitting industrial sectors. Since the steel production process is already exhaustively optimized, alternative routes are sought in order to increase carbon efficiency and reduce these emissions. During steel production, three main carbon-containing off-gases are generated: blast furnace gas, coke oven gas and basic oxygen furnace gas. In the present work, the addition of renewable hydrogen by electrolysis to those steelworks off-gases is studied for the production of methane and methanol. Different case scenarios are investigated using AspenPlusTM flowsheet simulations, which differ on the end-product, the feedstock flowrates and on the production of power. Each case study is evaluated in terms of hydrogen and electrolysis requirements, carbon conversion, hydrogen consumption, and product yields. The findings of this study showed that the electrolysis requirements surpass the energy content of the steelwork’s feedstock. However, for the m... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: heat transfer coefficient (HTC), inverse problem, optimization of the heating process, thermo-chemical treatment
This paper presents results of research on unevenness of cylinder heating in a furnace for thermo-chemical treatment. Experimental research was conducted with respect to nitriding. Various heating speeds and settings of the fan operation in the furnace were considered. Boundary conditions were calculated in the form of temperature and the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) on the cylinder boundary in four planes along the cylinder length. Calculations were performed with the use of the inverse problem for non-linear and unsteady heat conduction equations. Boundary conditions from individual planes were compared with the mean value of them all. The variability of the calculated boundary conditions (temperature and HTC) along the cylinder length was investigated based on values of the absolute and relative differences for temperature and HTC. Estimates: mean value, mean value from the absolute value and the maximum values for the absolute and the relative differences of temperature and HTC... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ant colony optimization (ACO), genetic algorithm (GA), maximum power point tracking (MPPT), partial shade, photovoltaic systems
A maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller was used to make the photovoltaic (PV) module operate at its maximum power point (MPP) under changing temperature and sunlight irradiance. Under partially shaded conditions, the characteristic power−voltage (P−V) curve of the PV modules will have more than one maximum power point, at least one local maximum power point and a global maximum power point. Conventional MPPT controllers may control the PV module array at the local maximum power point rather than the global maximum power point. MPPT control can be also implemented by using soft computing methods (SCM), which can handle the partial shade problem. However, to improve the robustness and speed of the MPPT controller, a hybrid MPPT controller has been proposed that combines two SCMs, the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). Matlab was used in a simulation of a GA-ACO MPPT controller where four SunPower SPR-305NE-WHT-D PV modules with a maximum power of 305.226... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: air pollution, flue gas treatment, rotary kiln, waste thermal treatment
The technology of waste-management thermal processing may pose a threat to the natural environment through the emission of harmful substances, such as CO, NOx, SO2, HCl, HF, total organic carbon (TOC) and dust, as well as dioxins and furans. Due to the advantages of thermal waste treatment, including the small volume of solid residue produced and possible thermal energy recovery, thermal waste treatment is widely applied. Continuous research is necessary to develop methods for reducing the risk of harmful substances being produced and methods for the effective removal of pollutants resulting from flue gases. This paper presents an analysis of the results and conditions of the experimental redesign of a thermal industrial waste (polypropylene) treatment plant. The purpose of the redesign was to improve the quality of gasification and afterburning processes taking place in the combustion and afterburner chambers (through the installation of an additional section), thus resulting in a red... Subject: Optimization
Keywords: back electromotive force, cogging torque, robust design optimization, static eccentricity
Static eccentricity (SE) is frequently generated by manufacturing processes. As the nonuniformity of the air-gap length is caused by the SE, the torque ripple and cogging torque increase in the motor. This study analyzes the distorted back electromotive force (EMF) and cogging torque due to SE. Further, a motor design considering SE is performed for stable back EMF and low cogging torque. First, the SE was diagnosed and analyzed using the back EMF and cogging torque measured from the test results of the base model. In addition, the rotor position was calculated using the unbalanced back EMF due to the SE. The calculated rotor position is used when analyzing phenomena due to SE and applied to robust design. Subsequently, robust design optimization was performed to improve the unbalanced back EMF and cogging torque due to SE. Using finite element analysis (FEA) considering SE, the shape of the stator was designed based on the base model. The estimated rotor position from the base model w... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: ANN, CO2 emission, energy consumption, environmental economics, non-linear estimation, urban pollutant
The aim of this study is to examine the factors influencing the electricity consumption of urban households and to prove these with statistically significant results. The study includes 46 small and medium-sized towns in Hungary. The methodology of the study is mainly provided by a model that can be used for this purpose; however, the results obtained with the traditional regression method are compared with the results of another, more complex estimation method, the artificial neural network, which has the advantage of being able to use different types of models. The focus of our article is on methodological alignment, not necessarily the discovery of new results. Certain demographic characteristics significantly determine the energy demand of a household sector in a municipality. In this case, as the ratio of people aged 60 or over within a city rises by 1%, the urban household average energy consumption decreases by 61 kilowatt hours, and when it rises by 1%, the amount of pollutants... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: emulator, engine model, gas engine, signal processing, software in the loop, wind turbine
In order to investigate the grid integration of wind turbines (WT) of various scales and designs, a wind turbine emulator (WTE) is being built in Flensburg within the state-funded project GrinSH. The special feature of this WTE is the use of a large gas engine instead of an electric motor to emulate the behavior of a WT. In order to develop the controls of this innovative WTE and to design the upcoming test runs under safe conditions, a software in the loop model (SILM) was applied. This SILM contained a mathematical model of the wind turbine, mathematical models of the gas engine with an integrated controller, and a model of the generator and frequency converter unit, as well as a preventive modulator of the reference signal (PMRS). The PMRS module converts the reference signal of the emulated WT in such a way that the dynamics of the engine components can be calculated and balanced in advance to enable the required behavior of the entire SILM despite the dynamics of the gas engine. Assessing the potential of advanced driver assistance systems requires developing dedicated control algorithms for controlling the longitudinal speed of automated vehicles over time. In this paper, a multiobjective off-line optimal control approach for planning the speed of the following vehicle in adaptive cruise control (ACC) driving is proposed. The implemented method relies on the principle of global optimality fostered by dynamic programming (DP) and aims to minimize propelling energy consumption and enhance passenger comfort. The powertrain model and onboard control system are integrated within the proposed car-following optimization framework. The retained ACC approach ensures that the distance between the following vehicle and the preceding vehicle is always maintained within allowed limits. The flexibility of the proposed method is demonstrated here through ease of implementation on a wide range of powertrain categories, including a conventional vehicle propelled by an interna... [more]

Keywords: backflashover, bipolar lightning strokes, fast front transients, OHL-cable mixed HVDC transmission, PSCAD/EMTDC, shielding failure
Bipolar lightning strokes are associated with multiple polarity electrical discharge with no current intervals in between, making their behavior quite peculiar. This work presents a fast front analysis of a mixed high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link, evaluating the factors that influence the line transients due to shielding failures and backflashovers (BFOs), considering both overvoltage and repeated polarity reversal at the cable sending terminal. The research process includes a detailed modeling of a bipolar lightning stroke, frequency-dependent HVDC overhead, and underground transmission line sections. Noticeable findings include the occurrence of only a positive polarity insulator BFO for the adjacent and subsequent tower, despite the dual polarity of the lightning stroke with relatively small values for the lightning parameters. The influence of traveling waves on the insulator flashover performance of the line with varying parameters (such as the riser section len... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural network, catalyst, Dry Reforming, hydrogen production, meta-analysis
Dry reforming of hydrocarbons, alcohols, and biological compounds is one of the most promising and effective avenues to increase hydrogen (H2) production. Catalytic dry reforming is used to facilitate the reforming process. The most popular catalysts for dry reforming are Ni-based catalysts. Due to their inactivation at high temperatures, these catalysts need to use metal supports, which have received special attention from researchers in recent years. Due to the existence of a wide range of metal supports and the need for accurate detection of higher H2 production, in this study, a systematic review and meta-analysis using ANNs were conducted to assess the hydrogen production by various catalysts in the dry reforming process. The Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases were investigated to retrieve the related articles from 1 January 2000 until 20 January 2021. Forty-seven articles containing 100 studies were included. To determine optimal models for three target factors (hydroca... [more]
