CO2 Capture from Flue Gas of a Coal-Fired Power Plant Using Three-Bed PSA Process
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: breakthrough curve, Carbon Capture, flue gas, pressure swing adsorption, zeolite 13X
The pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process was used to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the flue gas of a coal-fired power plant to reduce CO2 emissions. Herein, CO2 was captured from flue gas using the PSA process for at least 85 vol% CO2 purity and with the other exit stream from the process of more than 90 vol% N2 purity. The extended Langmuir−Freundlich isotherm was used for calculating the equilibrium adsorption capacity, and the linear driving force model was used to describe the gas adsorption kinetics. We compared the results of breakthrough curves obtained through experiments and simulations to verify the accuracy of the mass transfer coefficient. The flue gas obtained after desulphurization and water removal (13.5 vol% CO2 and 86.5 vol% N2) from a subcritical 1-kW coal-fired power plant served as the feed for the designed three-bed, nine-step PSA process. To determine optimal operating conditions for the process, the central composite design (CCD) was used. After CCD analys... [more]

Design and Implementation a Single-Switch Step-Up DC-DC Converter Based on Cascaded Boost and Luo Converters
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: boost converter, cascaded converters, high voltage-gain converters, Luo converter
We designed and implemented a single-switch step-up DC-DC converter based on cascaded boost and Luo converters. The proposed converter demonstrated a quadratic voltage gain and a high efficiency, which makes it suitable for renewable energy applications, where a high voltage gain ratio is desired without imposing a high number of bulky items or employing a high duty cycle of the active switches. This converter benefits from the continuity of the input current waveform, which equips the maximum utilisation of renewable energy sources. While a transformer-less high voltage-gain was achieved, the voltage and current stresses of the power switch and diodes were kept low in comparison with the existing quadratic DC-DC converters. We analysed the converter in both continuous and discontinuous conduction modes. A non-ideal model of components was considered for power loss and efficiency calculations and comparisons. Finally, the simulation results were extracted with PLECS and validated with... [more]

Experimental Studies of Dust Suction Irregularity from Multi-Cyclone Dust Collector of Two-Stage Air Filter
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air filter, air filtration efficiency and accuracy, dust suction, dust suction irregularity, engine, multicyclone
The necessity of two-stage (multi-cyclone-baffle) inlet air filters used for motor vehicle engines operating under dusty conditions was demonstrated. The advantages of a set of several dozen cyclones (multi-cyclone) used for filtering inlet air in the engines were shown. The problem of dust accumulation separated by the cyclones in the multi-cyclone dust collector and the necessity of its removal on a current basis were analyzed. Methods of removing dust from the dust collector by means of the QS suction flow were described. It was demonstrated that the most rational method of forcing the suction flow is the use of the suction flow released from the engine. The study results are presented in this paper and show that the removal (by suction) of the accumulated dust from the dust collector additionally causes a noticeable increase in cyclone filtration efficiency. It was shown that the effective suction flow must not exceed 10−15% of the outlet flow value from the cyclone. It was evidenc... [more]

A Forecast-Based Load Management Approach for Commercial Buildings Demonstrated on an Integration of BEV
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery electric vehicles, charging strategies, load management, LSTM, Machine Learning, personalized standard load profiles, time-series prediction
Load-forecasting problems have already been widely addressed with different approaches, granularities and objectives. Recent studies focused not only on deep learning methods but also on forecasting loads on single building level. This study aims to research problems and possibilities arising by using different load-forecasting techniques to manage loads. For that behavior of two neural networks, Long Short-Term Memory and Feed-Forward Neural Network as well as two statistical methods, standardized load profiles and personalized standardized load profiles are analyzed and assessed by using a sliding-window forecast approach. The results show that personalized standardized load profiles (MAE: 3.99) can perform similar to deep learning methods (for example, LSTM MAE: 4.47). However, because of the simplistic approach, load profiles are not able to adapt to new patterns. As a case study for evaluating the support of load-forecasting for applications in energy management systems, the integ... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: direct methanol fuel cell, electrocatalyst, methanol electrooxidation, nitrogen doped montmorillonite, underpotential deposition
In the current research work, palladium (Pd) nanoparticles were electrochemically deposited on a nitrogen doped montmorillonite (CNx-MMT) support using the underpotential deposition (UPD) method. The prepared Pd based composite electrode was studied as an electrocatalyst for methanol fuel oxidation. The catalysts and the supporting materials montmorillonite, acid activated montmorillonite, and nitrogen doped montmorillonite (MMT, HMMT and CNx-HMMT) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electrochemical characterization by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The results indicated that Pd supported on CNx-HMMT possesses enhanced electrocatalytic activity and stability compared to commercial Pd/C, which was attributed to its higher electrochemical surface area (ECSA) (23.00 m2 g−1). The results demonstrated the potential application of novel Pd/CNx-HMMT compo... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: chilled water temperature, data center, energy cut-off, HVAC, water-side economizer
The degree of integration of IT devices and consumption of cooling energy are consistently increasing owing to developments in the data center industry. Hence, to ensure the smooth operation and fault prevention of IT devices, the energy consumption of cooling systems has increased, leading to active research on improvements in cooling system performance for reducing energy consumption. This study examines the reduction in cooling energy consumption using a simulation by applying chilled water control and a water-side economizer (WSE) system to enhance the cooling system efficiency. The simulation results showed that the energy consumption was reduced by 1.8% when the chilled water temperature was set to 11 °C in a conventional system and by up to 19.6% when WSE was also applied. Furthermore, when the changes in chilled water temperature were applied for efficient operation of WSE, the energy consumption was reduced by up to 30.1% compared to that in conventional energy systems.

Availability-Based Selection of Electricity Delivery Network in Marine Conversion Systems Using Bayesian Network
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: availability, Bayesian network, energy delivery network, logic dependency
Availability is an economically important metric used to assess the design of marine energy farms. Nowadays, three typical concepts of energy delivery network topologies have been proposed for marine energy conversion systems. Few research works assessing the availability of marine energy conversion systems have been published. Their methodology is only based upon time-consuming Monte Carlo simulations and only covers one maintenance strategy. The objective of this study is to consider different maintenance strategies and quantitatively assess the time-dependent availability of these typical energy delivery network topologies by investigating the working philosophy of these topologies and modelling the logic dependencies of them in a Bayesian network (BN). The working philosophy of each topology is investigated to obtain the logic dependencies of the units in the energy delivery network, by means of qualitative system analysis. A table-like data structure, called hierarchy, is introduc... [more]

Effect of Mainstream Velocity on the Optimization of a Fan-Shaped Film-Cooling Hole on a Flat Plate
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fan-shaped hole, film cooling, gas turbine, shape optimization
In this study, the effect of mainstream velocity on the optimization of a fan-shaped hole on a flat plate was experimentally investigated. The experiment was conducted by changing the forward expansion angle (βfwd), lateral expansion angle (βlat), and metering length ratio (Lm/D) of the film-cooling hole. A total of 13 cases extracted using the Box−Behnken method were considered to examine the effect of the shape parameters of the film-cooling hole under a 90 m/s mainstream velocity condition, and the results were compared with the results derived under a mainstream velocity of 20 m/s. One density ratio (DR = 2.0) and a blowing ratio (M) ranging from 1.0 to 2.5 were considered, and the pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) technique was applied for the film-cooling effectiveness (FCE). As a result of the experiment, the optimized hole showed a 49.3% improvement in the overall averaged FCE compared to the reference hole with DR = 2.0 and M = 2.0. As the blowing ratio increased, the hole exit a... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: oil analysis, predictive maintenance, prognosis, scheduled maintenance, wind energy, wind turbine gearbox
Recent works have addressed the analysis of some situations that alter the gearbox oil results in wind energy conversion systems (WECS). This work contributes by completing the analysis of additional situations, based on key operational data collected from 10 different multi-megawatt wind turbines at two different locations with two top-tier technologies, and has demonstrated that the oil analysis results can be altered in practice. As important as detecting these situations is to verify how the data collected by the different operators and transferred to the laboratories, this relevant information is not included in most cases. The issues that can stem from this lack of valuable data can be mitigated with a new and more complete template. This paper proposes a detailed template that is ready for an industrial use and contributes to standardizing the information handled by all actors. Taxonomy, Saving Potentials and Key Performance Indicators for Energy End-Use and Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the Aluminium Industry and Aluminium Casting Foundries
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: aluminium, benchmarking, categorisation, electrolysis, energy consumption
Increasing energy efficiency within the industrial sector is one of the main approaches in order to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. The production and processing of aluminium is energy and greenhouse gas intensive. To make well-founded decisions regarding energy efficiency and greenhouse gas mitigating investments, it is necessary to have relevant key performance indicators and information about energy end-use. This paper develops a taxonomy and key performance indicators for energy end-use and greenhouse gas emissions in the aluminium industry and aluminium casting foundries. This taxonomy is applied to the Swedish aluminium industry and two foundries. Potentials for energy saving and greenhouse gas mitigation are estimated regarding static facility operation. Electrolysis in primary production is by far the largest energy using and greenhouse gas emitting process within the Swedish aluminium industry. Notably, almost half of the total greenhouse gas emissions from electrolysi... [more]

Community Energy Groups: Can They Shield Consumers from the Risks of Using Blockchain for Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading?
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blockchain, distributed ledger technology, energy communities, energy trading, peer-to-peer, transactive energy
Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading is emerging as a new mechanism for settling the exchange of energy between renewable energy generators and consumers. P2P provides a mechanism for local balancing when it is facilitated through distributed ledgers (‘blockchains’). Energy communities across Europe have uncovered the potential of this technology and are currently running pilots to test its applicability in P2P energy trading. The aim of this paper is to assess, using legal literature and legislation, whether the legal forms available to energy communities in the United Kingdom (UK) can help resolve some of the uncertainties around the individual use of blockchain for P2P energy trading. This includes the legal recognition of ‘prosumers’, the protection of their personal data, as well as the validity of ‘smart contracts’ programmed to trade energy on the blockchain network. The analysis has shown that legal entities, such as Limited Liability Partnerships and Co-operative Societies, can p... [more]

Flexibility Control in Autonomous Demand Response by Optimal Power Tracking
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: autonomous optimization, demand response, Energy Storage, power tracking, real-time pricing
In the regime of incentive-based autonomous demand response, time dependent prices are typically used to serve as signals from a system operator to consumers. However, this approach has been shown to be problematic from various perspectives. We clarify these shortcomings in a geometric way and thereby motivate the use of power signals instead of price signals. The main contribution of this paper consists of demonstrating in a standard setting that power tracking signals can control flexibilities more efficiently than real-time price signals. For comparison by simulation, German renewable energy production and German standard load profiles are used for daily production and demand profiles, respectively. As for flexibility, an energy storage system with realistic efficiencies is considered. Most critically, the new approach is able to induce consumptions on the demand side that real-time pricing is unable to induce. Moreover, the pricing approach is outperformed with regards to imbalance... [more]

Thermal Characterization of Recycled Materials for Building Insulation
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: building insulation materials, circular economy, recycled building materials, Sustainability, sustainable building materials, thermal conductivity
The building sector is known to have a significant environmental impact, considering that it is the largest contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions of around 36% and is also responsible for about 40% of global energy consumption. Of this, about 50% takes place during the building operational phase, while around 10−20% is consumed in materials manufacturing, transport and building construction, maintenance, and demolition. Increasing the necessity of reducing the environmental impact of buildings has led to enhancing not only the thermal performances of building materials, but also the environmental sustainability of their production chains and waste prevention. As a consequence, novel thermo-insulating building materials or products have been developed by using both locally produced natural and waste/recycled materials that are able to provide good thermal performances while also having a lower environmental impact. In this context, the aim of this work is to provide a detailed... [more]

Rehydrogenation of Sodium Borates to Close the NaBH4-H2 Cycle: A Review
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: electrochemical processes, Hydrogen, hydrogen cycle, mechano-chemical processes, regeneration of sodium borohydride, sodium borohydride, thermochemical processes
In 2007, the US Department of Energy recommended a no-go on NaBH4 hydrolysis for onboard applications; however, the concept of a NaBH4-H2-PEMFC system has the potential to become a primary source for on-demand power supply. Despite the many efforts to study this technology, most of the published papers focus on catalytic performance. Nevertheless, the development of a practical reaction system to close the NaBH4-H2 cycle remains a critical issue. Therefore, this work provides an overview of the research progress on the solutions for the by-product rehydrogenation leading to the regeneration of NaBH4 with economic potential. It is the first to compare and analyze the main types of processes to regenerate NaBH4: thermo-, mechano-, and electrochemical. Moreover, it considers the report by Demirci et al. on the main by-product of sodium borohydride hydrolysis. The published literature already reported efficient NaBH4 regeneration; however, the processes still need more improvements. Moreov... [more]

Effect of Temperature and Nanoparticle Concentration on Free Convective Heat Transfer of Nanofluids
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: free convective heat transfer, horizontal cylinder, nanofluids, thermophysical properties
A theoretical analysis of the influence of temperature and nanoparticle concentration on free convection heat transfer from a horizontal tube immersed in an unbounded nanofluid was presented. The Nusselt (Nu) number and heat transfer coefficient were parameters of the intensity of the convective heat transfer. For free convection, the Nu number was a function of the Rayleigh (Ra) number and Prandtl (Pr) number. The Rayleigh (Ra) number and Prandtl (Pr) number were functions of the thermophysical properties of nanofluids. The thermophysical properties of nanofluids varied with temperature and nanoparticle concentration. Therefore, an analysis was conducted to evaluate the effects on the performance of nanofluids due to variations of thermal conductivity, viscosity, thermal expansion, density, and specific heat, which are functions of nanoparticle concentration and temperature. Water- and ethylene glycol (EG)-based nanofluids with dispersed alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticles at mass concentra... [more]

Relationship between Energy Consumption and Economic Growth in European Countries: Evidence from Dynamic Panel Data Analysis
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic panel model, economic growth, energy consumption, European countries
The aim of the article is to empirically verify the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth. The time scope of this study covers the period of 2008−2019. The scope of analyzed subjects covers 34 European countries, 27 of which are currently members of the European Union. European countries consume large amounts of energy, so it is worth investigating the effect of reducing energy consumption on the process of economic growth. For this purpose, dynamic panel models were used. The research methods included the use of dynamic panel models, taking into account the Arellano and Bond and Blundell and Bond estimators. The results made it possible to identify the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth. It was found that, in the short term, increases in production will result in a statistically significant increase in energy consumption. Importantly, in the long term, this impact is also statistically significant and positive. On the other hand, taking i... [more]

Production of High Purity Biosurfactants Using Heavy Oil Residues as Carbon Source
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Alcanivorax borkumensis SK2, bioremediation, biosurfactants, crude oil, heavy oil residues, hydrocarbons, rhamnolipids, sequencing batch reactor, substrate
Typically, oil pollution cleanup procedures following first response actions include dispersion. Crude oil is biodegradable, and its bioavailability can be increased when dispersed into very fine droplets by means of chemical surfactants. Although their use is widely spread in many applications, the latter may prove toxic, depending on the extent of use. The use of biological means, such as bioremediation and biosurfactants, has emerged over the past years as a very promising ‘green’ alternative technology. Biosurfactants (BSs) are amphiphilic molecules produced by microorganisms during biodegradation, thus increasing the bioavailability of the organic pollutants. It is their biodegradability and low toxicity that render BSs as a very promising alternative to the synthetic ones. Alcanivorax borkumensis SK2 strain ability to produce BSs, without any impurities from the substrate, was investigated. Keywords: biofuel, kinetic models, oxygenated molecules, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The need for lowering the environmental impacts has incentivized the investigation of biomass and biofuels as possible alternative sources for energy supply. Among the others, oxygenated bio-derived molecules such as alcohols, esters, acids, aldehydes, and furans are attractive substances as chemical feedstock and for sustainable energy production. Indeed, the presence of oxygen atoms limits the production of aromatic compounds, improves combustion efficiency (thus heat production) and alleviates the formation of carbon soot. On the other hand, the variability of their composition has represented one of the major challenges for the complete characterization of combustion behaviour. This work gives an overview of the current understanding of the detailed chemical mechanisms, as well as experimental investigations characterizing the combustion process of these species, with an emphasis on the laminar burning velocity and the ignition delay time. Analysis of Radial Inflow Turbine Losses Operating with Supercritical Carbon Dioxide
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: radial inflow turbine, supercritical carbon dioxide, turbine loss models, turbomachinery loss
The losses of supercritical CO2 radial turbines with design power scales of about 1 MW were investigated by using computational fluid dynamic simulations. The simulation results were compared with loss predictions from enthalpy loss correlations. The aim of the study was to investigate how the expansion losses are divided between the stator and rotor as well as to compare the loss predictions obtained with the different methods for turbine designs with varying specific speeds. It was observed that a reasonably good agreement between the 1D loss correlations and computational fluid dynamics results can be obtained by using a suitable set of loss correlations. The use of different passage loss models led to high deviations in the predicted rotor losses, especially with turbine designs having the highest or lowest specific speeds. The best agreement in respect to CFD results with the average deviation of less than 10% was found when using the CETI passage loss model. In addition, the othe... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioluminescence, brown coal, color, mine waters, water activity
Open-pit mines can cause environmental changes, such as alterations of landscape structure, hydrology, air quality, and river sediments; they can also generate cones of depression. We propose a new method for surveys of mine waters using the example of an open-pit mine in central Poland. This study examines the correlations between bioluminescence and the color of brown coal mine waters and tests whether values of the three-color coordinate system reflected the physicochemical quality of mine waters measured in real-time and in the field. Our results show that alkalinity, pH reaction, and conductivity are higher in surface drainage, while values of trophic parameters (soluble reactive phosphates, total phosphorus, nitrates) are greater in samples representing subsurface drainage. Correlation analysis of bioluminescence with mine water quality parameters showed that only water color had a strong association with bioluminescence.
