Small-Scale Hybrid and Polygeneration Renewable Energy Systems: Energy Generation and Storage Technologies, Applications, and Analysis Methodology
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, Energy Storage, energy system, hybrid, Polygeneration, renewables, solar, systems analysis, Wind
The energy sector is nowadays facing new challenges, mainly in the form of a massive shifting towards renewable energy sources as an alternative to fossil fuels and a diffusion of the distributed generation paradigm, which involves the application of small-scale energy generation systems. In this scenario, systems adopting one or more renewable energy sources and capable of producing several forms of energy along with some useful substances, such as fresh water and hydrogen, are a particularly interesting solution. A hybrid polygeneration system based on renewable energy sources can overcome operation problems regarding energy systems where only one energy source is used (solar, wind, biomass) and allows one to use an all-in-one integrated systems in order to match the different loads of a utility. From the point of view of scientific literature, medium- and large-scale systems are the most investigated; nevertheless, more and more attention has also started to be given to small-scale... [more]

Experimental Study of Pulsating Heat Pipes Filled with Nanofluids under the Irradiation of Solar Simulator
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: direct absorption, nanofluids, PHP, solar energy
Developing renewable energy technologies, especially solar technology, is of vital importance to cope with increasing energy consumption. The existing solar thermal systems have the disadvantages of capturing solar energy inefficiently and needing additional pumping power to circulate the working fluid. A concept of a direct absorption pump-free solar thermal system that combines the advantages of nanoparticles and pulsating heat pipes (PHP) is proposed in this work. The effects of a variety of parameters including nanoparticle types, nanoparticle concentration, and nanofluid filling rate on the performance of PHP were studied. It was found that PHP has the best filling rate (80−90%) making the best heat transfer performance and minimizing the thermal resistance. The concentration of nanoparticles affects the input power of the pulsating heat pipe and thus the operation of the PHP. The nanofluid with relatively low concentration cannot absorb enough solar energy to drive the PHP to ope... [more]

Power-to-Methane to Integrate Renewable Generation in Urban Energy Districts
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed energy systems, flexibility, Hydrogen, power-to-gas, sector coupling, smart energy systems, substitute natural gas
The deployment of distributed energy systems must take place paying attention to the self-consumption of renewable generation. Innovative sector coupling strategies can play that role linking local electricity and gas grids. The present work aims to evaluate the energy and economic feasibility of the Power-to-Methane strategy application in urban energy districts. A residential cluster was considered as a case study. Two PV configurations have been applied to evaluate the Substitute Natural Gas (SNG) production under different renewable excess conditions. Thereafter, the Power-to-Methane strategy was implemented by varying the system’s size. Some significant configurations have been compared to each other in terms of energy and economics. Beyond a certain threshold limit, an increase in the photovoltaic size slightly enhances the effectively self-consumed energy. The Power-to-Methane strategy can exploit all the renewable excess once the system is properly sized, almost doubling the po... [more]

Analysis of the Future of Mobility: The Battery Electric Vehicle Seems Just a Transitory Alternative
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: AHP, electric vehicles, fuel cell, internal combustion engine vehicles, mobility alternatives, pairwise comparison, plug-in hybrid
It is, undoubtedly, a widespread belief that the electric vehicle (EV) is considered sustainable. However, in the manufacturing and retirement phases, EVs do not appear to be as sustainable as internal combustion vehicles (ICVs) and during the use phase, the pollution produced by EVs depends on the source of electricity generation to recharge the batteries. From an economic point of view, EVs do not appear to be competitive compared to ICVs either. However, current market trends push hard on battery EVs (BEV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV). This study aims to analyze which of the possible mobility alternatives has more sense to be considered as the option with higher penetration in the future. To this end, four known mobility technologies (ICVs, PHEVs, BEVs, and hydrogen fuel cell EVs or FCEVs) are compared for a mid-size car using published data, through environmental and techno-economic criteria, by applying the analytic hierarchy process method in an objective manner on multiple... Reaction Kinetics-Based Modeling and Parameter Sensitivity Analysis of Direct Ethanol Fuel Cells
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: direct ethanol fuel cells, ethanol electro-oxidation, first-principles modeling, parameter sensitivity analysis
Ethanol is considered an alternative fuel to power fuel cells, especially due to its ease of transport and storage and renewable production on a large scale. However, its use in direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFC) is still limited by incomplete electro-oxidation and slow reaction kinetics. Modeling approaches have focused on investigating different reaction mechanisms, but so far, no formal analysis of model parameter sensitivity has been conducted. This work modeled and identified sensitive parameters for different types of Pt−Sn catalysts previously prepared by our research group that displayed good performance in the 5−15 mW/cm2 range (relative to a performance of 12 mW/cm2 achieved by a commercial ETEK catalyst). Analyses to study the effect of these parameters on coverage fraction distribution, reaction rates and possible correlations were also performed. The model was developed based on Butler−Volmer kinetics and on a reaction mechanism previously reported in the literature. Statist... [more]

Flow around an Oscillating Cylinder at Low Reynolds Number with Forced Convection: Effect of Corner Radius and Reynolds Number
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: corner radius ratio, FIV, flow structure, heat transfer, oscillating heated cylinder, vortex shedding
This numerical study investigated the flow-induced vibration (FIV) on non-heated and heated cylinders with different normalized corner radii (r*) at different Reynolds numbers (Re). Four different values of r* were considered (i.e., 0 (square cylinder), 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 (circular cylinder)) at three different Re: 100, 150, and 200 within the laminar regime. The cylinder constrained in the axial direction and oscillated transversally was considered for a fixed nondimensional cylinder mass (m*) of 10 and a reduced velocity (Ur) of 4.92. The effect of r* and Re could be seen in the vibration modes of cylinders. The two-dimensional incompressible Navier−Stokes and energy equations were solved together with Newton’s Second Law governing the motion of the cylinder with the help of a computational solver. Four different modes were observed in this study: Mode-I characterized by exceptionally low amplitude; Mode-II characterized by fluctuating amplitude known as hysteresis (beating); M... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: brine injection method, Compressed Air Energy Storage, Energy Storage, existing salt cavern, natural gas storage, tightness
Underground salt caverns are widely used in large-scale energy storage, such as natural gas, compressed air, oil, and hydrogen. In order to quickly build large-scale natural gas reserves, an unusual building method was established. The method involves using the existing salt caverns left over from solution mining of salt to build energy storages. In 2007, it was first applied to Jintan Natural Gas Storage of China. Based on this successful project, several existing salt caverns were screened to build energy storages in China. Engineering experience indicates that the key to successful reusing is how to select the most suitable of the numerous available caverns and confirm it. This paper summarizes and reviews relevant theories and testing methods, including: (1) the primary selection principle for using existing salt caverns to build energy storage, (2) the testing method and evaluation theory of tightness of the existing salt cavern, and (3) the typical project case of using the exist... Tabular Open Circuit Voltage Modelling of Li-Ion Batteries for Robust SOC Estimation
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery management system, hardware implementation of algorithms, memory constraints, OCV-SOC characterization, polynomial fitting, sampling of functions, state of charge estimation
Battery management systems depend on open circuit voltage (OCV) characterization for state of charge (SOC) estimation in real time. The traditional approach to OCV-SOC characterization involves collecting OCV-SOC data from sample battery cells and then fitting a polynomial model to this data. The parameters of these polynomial models are known as the OCV-parameters, or OCV-SOC parameters, in battery management systems and are used for real-time SOC estimation. Even though traditional OCV-SOC characterization approaches are able to abstract the OCV-SOC behavior of a battery in a few parameters, these parameters are only applicable in high precision computing systems. However, many practical battery applications do not have access to high-precision computing resources. The typical approach in a low-precision system is to round the OCV-parameters. This paper highlights the perils of rounding the OCV parameters and proposes an alternative OCV-SOC table. First, several existing OCV-SOC para... [more]

Comparative Study of Methane Production in a One-Stage vs. Two-Stage Anaerobic Digestion Process from Raw Tomato Plant Waste
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, Hydrogen, methane, one-stage, tomato plant waste, two-stage
An anaerobic digestion process performed in two stages has the advantages of the production of hydrogen in addition to methane, and of further degradation of the substrate over the conventional process. The effectiveness of the implementation of this system for the treatment of lignocellulosic waste has been demonstrated. In 2020, more than 180 million tons of organic waste were generated worldwide from tomato crop production, posing a serious environmental risk. In the present investigation, methane production was compared in a two-stage system versus one-stage system from non-pretreated tomato plant residues. For this, different temperature (37 and 55 °C) and initial pH (5.5 and 6.5) conditions were evaluated during hydrogenesis and a constant temperature (37 °C, without pH adjustment) during methanogenesis. At the same time, a one-stage treatment (37 °C, without pH adjustment) was run for comparison purposes. The two-stage treatment in which the highest production of hydrogen, 12.4... [more]

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Blades Number on the Dynamic Response of a Small Horizontal-Axis Wind Turbine
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic response, number of blades, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, small wind turbine, solidity, vibrations, wind tunnel test
The new energy scenario is rising a strong interest towards the distributed production from renewable sources; among them, wind seems to be one of the most interesting and at the same time critical due to the challenges of the conversion technology. Operation of small wind energy conversion systems is generally very complex due the extremely variable regime of operation and the high turbulent wind, so that a deep knowledge of the dynamic response of such devices is crucial not only for optimising their performances but also to make them comfortable to be used in residential areas. For these reasons, the present work is focused on analysing the effect in changing the number of blades on a small horizontal axis wind turbine through an experimental campaign in the wind tunnel. The turbine dynamics has been characterised running some “wind ramp” tests and analysing the rotor capability in following the wind as well the vibrations transmitted by the turbine during the operation. Results dem... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: multirod, Nd:YAG, solar concentration, solar laser, tracking error compensation capacity
A seven-rod solar laser head was conceptualized and numerically studied to improve the tracking error compensation capacity and power stability in end-side-pumping schemes. It was composed of a first-stage heliostat−parabolic mirror system, a second-stage fused silica aspheric lens and a third-stage conical pumping cavity, within which seven Nd:YAG rods were mounted. Highly stable solar laser emission, with a power loss inferior to 5% for tracking errors up to ±0.4°, could potentially be enabled with seven 4 mm diameter, 13 mm length rods. The tracking error width at 10% laser power loss was about 1.0°, which is 1.65 times higher than the experimental record, attained by a dual-rod side-pumping prototype. Furthermore, a total multimode laser power of about 41.2 W could also be achieved, corresponding to 23.3 W/m2 collection and 2.5% solar-to-laser power conversion efficiencies, which are 1.65 and 1.36 times higher than those obtained with the dual-rod side-pumping prototype. A Recycling Pathway for Rare Earth Metals (REMs) from E-Waste through Co-Gasification with Biomass
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, electronic wastes, gasification, rare earth metals (REMs), rare earth metals (REMs) recycling
This manuscript investigates an improvised gasification process for capturing and recycling rare earth metals (REMs) from consumer and industrial electronic wastes, often termed “e-waste”. The proposed procedure is based on the formation of coalesced and aggregated metal nodules on biochar surfaces through the gasification of e-waste mixed with gasifier feedstocks. A preliminary understanding of metal nodule formation based on different atmospheric conditions (inert, oxidizing, and oxidizing followed by reducing atmospheres) was examined in both pilot-scale gasifier and tube furnace experiments using iron powder mixed with corn. Iron powder is representative of the REM in the e-waste. Metal nodule sizes, morphology, and composition are analyzed and compared via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) techniques. We conclude that sintering is the key mechanism responsible for metal nodule growth through me... [more]

A Machine Learning-Based Method for Modelling a Proprietary SO2 Removal System in the Oil and Gas Sector
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Machine Learning, neural networks, oil and gas, SO2 removal technology
The aim of this study is to develop a model for a proprietary SO2 removal technology by using machine learning techniques and, more specifically, by exploiting the potentialities of artificial neural networks (ANNs). This technology is employed at the Eni oil and gas treatment plant in southern Italy. The amine circulating in this unit, that allows for a reduction in the SO2 concentration in the flue gases and to be compliant with the required specifications, is a proprietary solvent; thus, its composition is not publicly available. This has led to the idea of developing a machine learning (ML) algorithm for the unit description, with the objective of becoming independent from the licensor and more flexible in unit modelling. The model was developed in MatLab® by implementing ANNs and the aim was to predict three targets, namely the flow rate of SO2 that goes to the Claus unit, the emissions of SO2, and the flow rate of steam sent to the regenerator reboiler. These represent, respectiv... [more]

Curled-Skewed Wakes behind Yawed Wind Turbines Subject to Veered Inflow
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical wake model, Coriolis force, wake steering, wind turbine, wind veer, yaw angle
This work presents a new engineering analytical model that predicts the effect of both the turbine yaw misalignment and the inflow wind veer on the wake flow distribution downwind of a wind turbine. To consider the veered inflow, two methods were examined. In the first method, the curled shape of the wake due to the yaw offset is initially modelled. The wake shape is then laterally skewed at each height due to the wind veer based on the assumption that the turbine wake is transported downstream by the incoming flow. The second method is a more realistic approach that accounts for the effect of wind veer on the wind velocity direction and the yaw angle seen by the wind turbine. This models the wake region in a local coordinate system defined based on the wind direction at each height. A coordinate transformation is then performed to represent the wake flow distribution in the global coordinate system attached to the ground. The results show that while the two methods provide similar out... [more]

Analysis of Temperature Influence on Precipitation of Secondary Sediments during Water Injection into an Absorptive Well
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: absorptive well, PHREEQC, solubility index, water injection
The extraction of hydrocarbons is associated with obtaining certain amounts of water, which is heavily contaminated with a wide range of chemical compounds that negatively affect the environment. At present, practically the only method of managing extracted reservoir waters is their injection into absorbing horizons. Large changes in parameters (pH, Eh, temperature, etc.) occurring during the extraction and storage of water, as well as the contact of the injected water with reservoir water and rock, may result in the precipitation of secondary sediments. The complexity of the injected water/native water/deposit rock system and the wide range of possible interactions do not always allow for correct interpretation of the processes and their impact on near-well zone permeability. One of the factors which has a decisive influence on dissolution/precipitation is temperature change. Applying analytical data of water with low (W-1) and high (W-2) mineralization, calculations were carried out... [more]
