February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active water heating system, Energy Efficiency, Exergy Efficiency, heat-electricity output, numerical simulation, photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) module
In order to objectively reflect the energy utilization performance of an active water heating system (AWHS) using photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) modules, this study proposes a new evaluation method based on energy efficiency, exergy efficiency and thermal-electrical output of a system in year-round weather conditions. Four samples of PV/T modules were surveyed to compare and evaluate the effectiveness of the system, called MD1, MD2, MD3 and MD4, respectively. The simulation program was developed to suit four types of PV/T modules and MATLAB was used as the programming language. The water flow through the four PV/T module samples and the hot water tank volume were investigated for the highest exergy efficiency of the system. The final results illustrate that in the weather conditions of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, the system has the highest energy efficiency, exergy efficiency and thermal output when using MD1 with 57.85%, 15.67% and 2.93 kWh/m2/day, respectively, while the system has highe... February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: modal analysis, pumped storage power station, steady state response, underground powerhouse, vibration
With the rapid development of pumped storage, the vibration problems caused by the operation of power stations have become increasingly prominent. In this paper, a large-scale pumped-storage power station is taken as the research object, and a three-dimensional refined finite element model of the underground powerhouse including the surrounding rock mass is established. Based on the analysis of the vibration source of the powerhouse and the water diversion pipeline, the modal and dynamic response analysis of the underground powerhouse of the hydropower station is carried out, and the distribution law of the larger vibration displacement position is revealed. The calculation results show that under the premise that the vibration source is selected reasonably and the numerical model is accurate, the main frequency of the underground powerhouse structure can be obtained more accurately. After optimizing the design of the underground powerhouse based on the calculation results, the resonan... [more]

Keywords: dairy products, electrical energy, energy conservation, fertilization, organic wastes, sustainable agriculture, Wastewater
Liquid wastes are generated during production in the milk and cheese industries. During cheese production, whey emerges as a liquid product. Researchers define waste as raw material instead of waste alone. Hence, there is no doubt that the use and management of waste will gain greater importance in the upcoming years. This study discusses the use of whey, which is food waste, in agriculture and the benefits derived from it in terms of energy value. Our research was based on the current literature and the amount of whey that emerged in the dairy industry. For this purpose, the existing literature was evaluated to determine how much waste was produced from whey. The total amount of whey waste in Turkey for 2021 was determined. Afterwards, the amount of potential energy was determined in evaluating these wastes. Turkey’s total amount of potential energy obtained from whey waste was calculated as 570.11 × 106 MJ, with 158.36 × 106 kWh as potential electrical energy. Moreover, it was calcul... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: multi-agent reinforcement learning, peer-to-peer energy trading, prosumer
This paper proposes a new peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading method between energy sellers and consumers in a community based on multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL). Each user of the community is treated as a smart agent who can choose the amount and the price of the electric energy to sell/buy. There are two aspects we need to examine: the profits for the individual user and the utility for the community. For a single user, we consider that they want to realise both a comfortable living environment to enhance happiness and satisfaction by adjusting usage loads and certain economic benefits by selling the surplus electric energy. Taking the whole community into account, we care about the balance between energy sellers and consumers so that the surplus electric energy can be locally absorbed and consumed within the community. To this end, MARL is applied to solve the problem, where the decision making of each user in the community not only focuses on their own interests but also ta... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 emissions reduction, diesel generators, offshore wind turbines, uninterrupted power supply system, wave energy converters
Marine renewable sources can make a significant contribution to the development of electrical energy generation and can increase the power supply reliability of mineral complexes. The development of alternative energy sources is happening at a fast pace, and this is due to the improvement of technologies that allow for generating more energy and operating in more extreme conditions, with almost no negative effect on the environment. However, currently, renewable sources are not able to meet all the energy requirements of the platforms. Hence, a key point is to gradually introduce and develop new technologies. This article explores the advantages of combining power generation by wave converters and offshore wind turbines. It investigates the possibilities of improving the combined systems’ reliabilities through justification of their mutual topology and accounting for the shadow effect from the wave installations.

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: analytic hierarchy process (AHP), energy policy, forecasting in power systems, multi-criteria decision making (MCDM), numerical taxonomy
This paper presents the application of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) for evaluating what technologies using renewable energy sources (RES) for electricity production have the chance to develop in Poland under the current socio-economic conditions. First, the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method was used to determine the weights of the optimization criteria. Five main criteria and 30 sub-criteria were identified. Next, the authors modified numerical taxonomy (NT) to rank eight RES technologies (such as onshore and offshore wind farms, photovoltaics, or biogas plants). The results show that offshore wind farms are the RES technology with the greatest development opportunities in Poland. The following three technologies: distributed photovoltaic energy, biogas plants, and biomass power plants, respectively, received a similar rating in the ranking. Hydropower and geothermal were the lowest-ranked technologies. The ranking, which is the result of multi-criteria analysis, in se... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: EMA Emulator, input current control, SMC, synchronous DC-DC converters
The main challenges of the input current control in synchronous DC-DC buck converters are the nonlinear model of the system, changes of the operating point in a wide range, and the need to use an input LC filter for current smoothing, which may result in the instability of the closed-loop system. In this paper, a step-by-step approach is developed for the design and improvement of a PI-feedforward closed-loop controller. It is shown that a linear PI controller cannot stabilize the closed-loop system properly during wide changes in model parameters, e.g., an equivalent series resistance of the input filter. To cope with the stability issues, a fixed-frequency sliding mode controller (SMC) has been developed in this paper for the implementation of an electro-mechanical actuator (EMA) emulator. Moreover, a systematic approach is proposed for controller tuning and the selection of the SMC’s gains. To achieve high power efficiency, high-frequency GaN switches are used for the practical impl... [more]

Keywords: control circuit, current response, magnetorheological damper, support vector method, SVM
Magnetorheological (MR) dampers are controlled energy-dissipating devices utilizing smart fluids. They operate in a fast and valveless manner by taking advantage of the rheological properties of MR fluids. The magnitude of the response of MR fluids, when subjected to magnetic fields, is of sufficient magnitude to employ them in various applications, namely, vibration damping, energy absorption, exoskeletons, etc. At the same time, predicting their response to arbitrary mechanical and electrical inputs is still a research challenge. Due to the non-linearities involved in material properties or the design of the solenoid used for activating the fluid modeling the relationships between the control circuit and the material’s response is complex. Modeling studies can be classified into two categories. The parametric approach requires the knowledge of the internal material’s properties and takes advantage of physics formulas to infer the I/O relationships present in the damper. For compariso... Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas pressure, buffer solutions, constant temperature, mechatronic control, mesophilic, microplant, pH
In this two-phase study, it was shown that a mixture with equal parts of manure and resulting animal blood was the optimal combination for obtaining biogas and biol. A quadratic growth trend in variable gas pressure over time—as well as its behavior—was confirmed for pHs around the neutral value for the substrate used in both the pilot phase and in the microplant, which had a mechanical implementation and mechatronic system for the control of variables that intervene in the anaerobic digestion process; this allowed for the confirmation of the results found in the first phase of research—without concerns that a lack of control over the process variables would cause—in such a way that it constituted a path for the industrialization of the waste treatment process in slaughterhouses that could be optimized by the use of the optimal combination that produces the greatest cm3 amount of gas. Anaerobic digestion in biodigesters is carried out at different constant temperature values within the... [more]
Why Biomass Fuels Are Principally Not Carbon Neutral
Gilbert Ahamer
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biomass fuels, carbon neutrality, energy strategies, global carbon cycle, global model
In order to realistically fulfil global and national climate protection targets, all potential measures have to be made use of to a maximum extent. Because it is readily available, biomass energy has been playing a key practical role for decades, supported by the traditional assumption of its carbon neutrality: under sustainable conditions, carbon dioxide emitted during combustion is held to be equal to its absorption during plant growth. In order to clarify conditions of carbon (C) neutrality, it is therefore necessary to model the annual natural C cycle on the entire planet and to include changes caused by a variety of growth strategies for biomass fuels. The “Combined Energy and Biosphere Model” CEBM calculates the cycle of plant growth, decay, biomass fuel production and its combustion on 2433 grid elements worldwide. CEBM results suggest that over many decades, the C pools of litter and especially soil organic carbon (i.e., humus layer) deplete considerably as a consequence of the... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon emissions, control, energy management system, hybrid marine power system, power management system, system optimisation
The increasing environmental concerns due to emissions from the shipping industry have accelerated the interest in developing sustainable energy sources and alternatives to traditional hydrocarbon fuel sources to reduce carbon emissions. Predominantly, a hybrid power system is used via a combination of alternative energy sources with hydrocarbon fuel due to the relatively small energy efficiency of the former as compared to the latter. For such a hybrid system to operate efficiently, the power management on the multiple power sources has to be optimised and the power requirements for different vessel types with varying loading operation profiles have to be understood. This can be achieved by using energy management systems (EMS) or power management systems (PMS) and control methods for hybrid marine power systems. This review paper focuses on the different EMSs and control strategies adopted to optimise power management as well as reduce fuel consumption and thus the carbon emission fo... [more]
Review of Current State-of-the-Art Research on Photovoltaic Soiling, Anti-Reflective Coating, and Solar Roads Deployment Supported by a Pilot Experiment on a PV Road
Sharmarke Hassan, Mahmoud Dhimish
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anti-reflecting coating, anti-soiling coating, photovoltaic systems, PV solar roads
The objective of this review paper is to provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art in solar road deployment, including the availability of anti-reflection and anti-soiling coating materials for photovoltaic (PV) technology. Solar roads are built using embedded PV panels that convert sunlight into electricity, which can be stored for later use. Prototypes of solar roads have been tested on various continents, but the lack of suitable PV materials has limited their effectiveness compared to conventional PV systems. By analyzing the existing literature on solar roads and PV materials, including anti-reflection and anti-soiling coatings, we aim to identify gaps in knowledge and propose an action plan to improve the resiliency, durability, and reliability of PV panels in solar road applications. This will enable the deployment of solar roads as a clean, renewable energy source.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: non-premixed turbulent combustion, OpenFoam software toolbox, radiative heat transfer, rotary cement kiln, thermal NO formation
No alternatives are currently available to operate industrial furnaces, except for hydrocarbon fuels. Plant managers, therefore, face at least two challenges. First, environmental legislation demands emission reduction. Second, changes in the origin of the fuel might cause unforeseen changes in the heat release. This paper develops the hypothesis for the detailed control of the combustion process using computational fluid dynamic models. A full-scale mock-up of a rotary cement kiln is selected as a case study. The kiln is fired by the non-premixed combustion of Dutch natural gas. The gas is injected at Mach 0.6 via a multi-nozzle burner located at the outlet of an axially mounted fuel pipe. The preheated combustion air is fed in (co-flow) through a rectangular inlet situated above the attachment of the fuel pipe. The multi-jet nozzle burner enhances the entrainment of the air in the fuel jet. A diffusion flame is formed by thin reaction zones where the fuel and oxidizer meet. The heat... [more]
A Comparative Study of NOx Emission Characteristics in a Fuel Staging and Air Staging Combustor Fueled with Partially Cracked Ammonia

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ammonia, chemical reactor network model, staged combustion
Recently, ammonia is emerging as a potential source of energy in power generation and industrial sectors. One of the main concerns with ammonia combustion is the large amount of NO emission. Air staging is a conventional method of reducing NO emission which is similar to the Rich-Burn, Quick-Mix, Lean-Burn (RQL) concept. In air-staged combustion, a major reduction of NO emission is based on the near zero NO emission at fuel-rich combustion of NH3/Air mixture. A secondary air stream is injected for the oxidation of unburned hydrogen and NHx. On the other hand, in fuel-staged combustion, NO emission is reduced by splitting NH3 injection, which promotes the thermal DeNOx process. In this study, NOx emission characteristics of air-staged and fuel-staged combustion of partially cracked ammonia mixture are numerically investigated. First, the combustion system is modeled by a chemical reactor network of a perfectly stirred reactor and plug flow reactor with a detailed chemistry mechanism. Th... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: high efficiency, multi-step transmission, number of serial turns per phase change method, thyristor, wye-delta method
In this paper, electromagnetic multi-step transmissions are introduced as a method for increasing the torque and efficiency of electric vehicle driving motors. Motors using permanent magnets have a limited ability in increasing the speed as the back electromotive force increases as the speed increases. The electric vehicle driving motor performs field-weakening controls to increase the speed after the rated point. Field-weakening control increases the rotor’s speed by weakening the magnetic flux of the field. At this time, the output is constant as the speed increases. Motors have voltage limits, which also affect the maximum speed of the motor. In order to improve these constraints, there is a case study of electromagnetic shifting phenomena. Examples of the research include the wye-delta method and the method of changing the number of equivalent serial turns. As in the case of previous studies, the problem of increasing back electromotive forces as the speed increases is solved. In t... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: electronic power conditioner (EPC), encapsulation, ionic contaminant, Space Travelling-Wave Tube Amplifier (STWTA), surface discharge, surface insulation resistance (SIR)
Since the electronic power conditioner (EPC) is a crucial part applied of a Space Travelling-wave Tube Amplifier (STWTA), the reliability issue must be considered. Of all the failure modes of an EPC, the insulation failure of an EPC in thermal and moist environments is the most serious, and needs special attention. By investigating the influence of contamination, humidity, and temperature on surface insulation resistance (SIR) and surface discharge, we focused on the determination of the insulation failure boundary in an EPC. Considering real working conditions, we used the typical circuit applied in the EPC as the test object. The insulation deterioration phenomenon under different thermal and moisture stress was studied. The results show that: (1) SIR of the samples did not change with contamination levels when the relative humidity (RH) was below 70%. When RH was higher than 75%, the SIR began to vary with temperature and ionic contaminant concentration. (2) Even if the samples were... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy consumption, energy cost, new product development, product design, sustainable development, systems modeling and simulation
The paper is concerned with predicting energy consumption in the production and product usage stages and searching for possible changes in product design to reduce energy consumption. The prediction of energy consumption uses parametric models based on regression analysis and artificial neural networks. In turn, simulations related to the identification of improvement opportunities for reducing energy consumption are performed using a constraint programming technique. The results indicate that the use of artificial neural networks improves the quality of an estimation model. Moreover, constraint programming enables the identification of all possible solutions to a constraint satisfaction problem, if there are any. These solutions support R&D specialists in identifying possibilities for reducing energy consumption through changes in product specifications. The proposed approach is dedicated to products related to high-cost energy use, which can be manufactured, for example, by companies... [more]

Keywords: feedback, MPC controller, PID controller, system identification, thermoelectric module, water distillation
In this paper, a modified design for a thermoelectric distiller is proposed, constructed, and tested. The design modifications include adding an inclined cover for the thermoelectric module and a cooling fan. The thermoelectric module and the fan were operated by an open loop or a feedback control to have the desired productivity. As the distiller productivity depends on the operating conditions, these operating conditions are investigated to find the best performance with the highest pure water productivity. Furthermore. a comparison between the closed and the open loop for driving the cooling fan with different operating conditions is conducted. In this work, the mathematical model of the proposed distiller is derived. Experimental results illustrate the robustness of the proposed approach and they show that the suggested thermoelectric distiller with feedback control, for both cases with MPC and PID controllers, can increase pure water productivity by up to 150% when compared with t... February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), fin, genetic algorithm (GA), heat-transfer enhancement, melting, phase-change material (PCM)
In this paper, the structural parameters of longitudinal rectangular fins used in a horizontal shell-and-tube latent heat storage unit (LHSU) are optimized to increase the melting rate of phase-change materials. The influence of natural convection on the melting process is considered. Due to the extremely nonlinear and expensive computational cost of the phase-change heat-transfer-optimization problem, a new coupling algorithm between genetic algorithm and computational fluid dynamics is developed. The effects of the thermal conductivity of fins; the filling rate of fins; and the number of fins on the optimal structure parameters, including the length, width, and position of each fin, are discussed. The results show that when a single fin is inserted in the half-ring region, the optimal dimensionless fin angle is about 0.2, and the optimal dimensionless fin length is about 0.96. The use of optimal single fin can shorten the dimensionless total melting time by 68% compared with the case... [more]
