Keywords: acetylene, Ethylene, fuel oil, hydrogen power, non-equilibrium low-temperature plasma, plasma pyrolysis, pulse electric discharge
The non-thermal plasma pyrolysis of fuel oil, under the action of low-voltage electric discharges in the liquid phase, has made it possible to develop a new process to obtain valuable petrochemical products. In this study, the main parameters, including pulse energy and the time of impact on the non-thermal plasma pyrolysis process, are studied. The main components of the obtained gaseous products are hydrogen (27.6−49.6 mol%), acetylene (33.6−49.1 mol%), ethylene (6.9−12.1 mol%), methane (3.9−9.1 mol%), and hydrocarbons C3-C5 (3.8−9.3 mol%). Increasing the capacity of electric discharges leads to an increase in the content of acetylene in the gas phase to 49.1 mol% and a decrease in energy costs for the production of gaseous products.
Distribution Characteristics of Micro Remaining Oil of Class III Reservoirs after Fracture Flooding in Daqing Oilfield

Subject: Materials
Keywords: computed tomography scan, fracture flooding, laser scanning confocal, microscopic residual oil, NMR
The class III reservoir in the Daqing Oilfield has poor sand body development, poor reservoir physical properties, and poor effects of measures. Its water drive recovery degree is low and the remaining reserves are large. It is the key target oil layer of the Daqing Oilfield. Due to the sedimentary characteristics and reservoir physical properties of class III reservoirs, conventional EOR technology (chemical flooding) and conventional stimulation and injection measures (fracturing) have poor potential tapping effects on class III reservoirs. According to the special reservoir conditions and development characteristics of the class III reservoir in the Daqing Oilfield, fracture-flooding technology is innovatively proposed, which greatly improves the recovery of remaining oil in class III reservoirs. The rapid injection of hydraulic surface activators into the formation and displacement of the remaining oil in class III reservoirs through rock core flooding experiments were simulated in... [more]
Effect of Stator Slots on Electromagnetic Performance of a High-Voltage Line-Start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor

Subject: Other
Keywords: line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM), magnetic slot wedge, pull-in torque, starting process, starting torque, stator leakage reactance, stator slot
It is well known that the use of slotted stators in motors produces undesirable effects, such as magnetic flux distortion, additional losses, ripple torque, and vibration. However, a large number of studies pay more attention to stator slots and magnetic slot wedges (MSW) in asynchronous motors and permanent magnet motors, ignoring the same problems in large capacity high voltage line start permanent magnet synchronous motors (HVLSPMSM). In order to disclose the effect of the stator slot on HVLSPMSMs, the no-load air gap magnetic field distribution and stator leakage reactance are studied. Meanwhile, the differences in the starting torque, pull-in torque and pull-out torque of four slot models are compared, and the starting performance is more affected by stator slot. In practical manufacturing, the application of MSWs is the main way to change the electromagnetic performance of stator slots, so the influence of MSWs under different permeabilities on the performance of HVLSPMSMs is inv... March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: calcium looping, Carbon Dioxide Capture, carbonation reaction, thermogravimetric analysis
In order to obtain the cheap waste calcium-based sorbent, three wasted CaCO3 precursors, namely carbide slag, chicken eggshells, and analytical reagent-grade calcium carbonate, were selected and prepared at 700 °C to form calcium-based sorbents for CO2 capture. TGA was used to test the CO2 uptake performance of each calcium-based sorbent in 20 cycles. To identify the decay mechanism of CO2 uptake with an increasing number of cycles, all calcium-based sorbents were characterized by using XRF, XRD, and N2 adsorption. The specific surface area of calcium-based sorbents was used to redefine the formula of cyclic carbonation reactivity decay. The carbonation conversion rate of three calcium-based sorbents exhibited a decreasing trend as the cycle number increased. Chicken eggshells exhibited the most significant decrease rate (over 50% compared with Cycle 1), while carbide slag and analytical reagent-grade calcium carbonate showed a flat linear decline trend. The specific surface area of th... [more]
Mechanism of Cuttings Removing at the Bottom Hole by Pulsed Jet
Heqian Zhao, Huaizhong Shi, Zhongwei Huang, Zhenliang Chen, Ziang Gu, Fei Gao
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cuttings cleaning, drilling, pulsed jet, unconventional oil and gas
Vibration drilling technology induced by hydraulic pulse can assist the bit in breaking rock at deep formation. Simultaneously, the pulsed jet generated by the hydraulic pulse promotes removal of the cuttings from the bottom hole. Nowadays, the cuttings removal mechanism of the pulsed jet is not clear, which causes cuttings to accumulate at the bottom hole and increases the risk of repeated cutting. In this paper, a pressure-flow rate fluctuation model is established to analyze the fluctuation characteristics of the pulsed jet at the bottom hole. Based on the model, the effects of displacement, well depth, drilling fluid viscosity, and flow area of the pulsed jet tool on the feature of instantaneous flow at the bottom hole are discussed. The results show that the pulsed jet causes flow rate and pressure to fluctuate at the bottom hole. When the displacement changes from 20 L/s to 40 L/s in a 2000 m well, the pulsed jet generates a flow rate fluctuation of 4−9 L/s and pressure fluctuati... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: clean/green energy, contrarian strategies, energy-related ETFs, momentum strategies, technical trading rules
Based on technological innovation and climate change, clean energy has been paid increasing attention to by worldwide investors, thereby increasing their interest in investing in firms that specialize in clean energy. However, traditional energy still plays an important role nowadays, because extreme weather has often occurred in the winters of recent years. We thus explore whether investing the strategies adopted by diverse technical trading rules would matter for investing in energy-related ETFs. By employing two representative global ETFs with more than 10 years of data, iShares Global Clean Energy ETF as the proxy of clean energy performance and iShares Global Energy ETF as that of traditional energy performance, we then revealed that momentum strategies would be proper for buying the green energy ETF, but contrarian strategies would be appropriate for buying the energy ETF. Furthermore, based on investment strategies adopted by diverse technical trading rules, we showed that the p... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: dual-active bridge (DAB), high-frequency oscillation (HFO), selected harmonic elimination (SHE)
The dual-active-bridge converter (DAB) has attracted tremendous attention in recent years. However, its EMI issues, especially the high-frequency oscillation (HFO) induced by the dv/dt and parasitic elements of the transformer, are significant challenges. The multi-active-bridge converter (MAB) based on the multi-winding transformer also faces similar problems, which are even more complicated. This article investigates the HFO of active-bridge-transformer-based DC/DC converters including DAB and MAB. Firstly, the general HFO model is studied using the analysis of the AC equivalent circuit considering the asymmetrical parameters. Ignoring the AC resistance in the circuit, the high-order model of the voltage oscillation could be reduced to a second-order system. Based on the simplified model, the oscillation voltage generated by an active bridge is analyzed in the time domain. Then, a universal active voltage-oscillation-suppression method-selected harmonic-elimination phase-shift (SHE P... [more]

Sven Teske, Jaysson Guerrero
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: industry specific 1.5 °C pathways, integrated energy assessment model, Matlab, one earth climate model, transport decarbonization
According to the IPCC, a global carbon budget of 400 GtCO2 is required to limit the temperature rise to 1.5 °C with a 67% likelihood by 2050. The finance industry is increasingly committed to ambitious climate targets. In this article, we describe the detailed methodology and energy model architecture of a MATLAB-based integrated energy assessment model for industry-specific 1.5 °C pathways, with a high technical resolution of target parameters as key performance indicators (KPIs). The additionality of OECM 2.0 is the high technical resolution in terms of the level of detail of industry-specific energy demand and supply parameters that can be modeled—a prerequisite to define industry-specific KPIs. We found that a database of industry-sector-specific energy demands and energy intensities, with a consistent methodology, is required to improve the accuracy of calculations in future research. We supplement the technical documentation with the results for a transport scenario.

Keywords: differences in genetic mechanism, high-quality reservoir, Paleogene, Pearl River Mouth Basin, primary porosity, secondary porosity
The Lufeng Sag and Huizhou Sag, both located in the Zhu-1 Depression, have similar geographical locations, but their reservoir characteristics in the Paleogene Wenchang Formation show obvious differences. Primary intergranular pores are mainly developed in the Lufeng Sag. However, secondary pores are the main reservoir space in the Huizhou depression. Overall, the reservoir properties of the Lufeng Sag are better than those of the Huizhou Sag. To analyse the differences between the Paleogene reservoirs in these two areas, this study mainly uses assay data, such as rock thin sections, scanning electron microscope images, drilling, and logging, to analyse the differential development mechanisms of high-quality reservoirs, and two types of reservoir development models were concluded. The results show that the anti-compaction primary porosity preservation mode is mainly developed in the Lufeng Sag. High compositional maturity quartz sandstone is the congenital condition of primary porosity... [more]

Keywords: Biomass, catalytic pyrolysis, HDO, MAP, microwave pyrolysis, plastics
Lignocellulosic biomass and waste, such as plastics, represent an abundant resource today, and they can be converted thermo-chemically into energy in a refinery. Existing research works on catalytic and non-catalytic pyrolysis performed in thermally-heated reactors have been reviewed in this text, along with those performed in microwave-heated ones. Thermally-heated reactors, albeit being the most commonly used, present various drawbacks such as superficial heating, high thermal inertia and slow response times. That is why microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP) appears to be a very promising technology, even if the process does present some technical drawbacks as well such as the formation of hot spots. The different types of catalysts used during the process and their impacts have also been examined in the text. More specifically, studies conducted in fluidised bed reactors (FBR) have been detailed and their advantages and drawbacks discussed. Finally, future prospects of MAP have been br... [more]

Elias Vagn Hansen, Per Johansen
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: adaptive, calibration, film thickness, lubrication, reflectometry, tribology, ultrasound
Adaptive calibration for ultrasound reflectometry methods used in the detection of lubrication film thickness is of great research interest. This is mainly due to the versatile non-destructive implementation of the technology in industrial applications, allowing for measurements of the lubrication film thickness, which directly relates to the friction, wear, and overall efficiency of the system. This study reviews and compares a curve fitting, extended Kalman filter, and resonance frequency detection adaptive calibration approach. Furthermore, the study compares two different regression models, used for the curve fitting and the extended Kalman filter approach. The study compares the methods and regression models based on both a theoretical and experimental analysis. The experimental analysis is based on data with varying lubrication film thickness. The lubrication film thickness is varied such that the resonance frequency is both detectable and non-detectable within the ultrasound tra... [more]

Two Manifestations of Market Premium in the Capitalization of Carbon Forest Estates
Petri P. Kärenlampi
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capital return rate, carbon rent, carbon storage, expected value
In this study, the effect of capitalization premium in forest estate markets on forest management and climate change mitigation economics is investigated. It is shown that proportional goodwill in capitalization induces linear scaling of the financial return, without any contribution to sound management practices. However, there is a financial discontinuity, as harvesting deteriorates goodwill. Such deterioration might be partially avoided by entering the real estate market. Conversely, a capitalization premium set on bare land as a tangible asset would increase timber storage and carbon sequestration. Observations indicate that the proportional goodwill is closer to reality within the Nordic Region, resulting in continuity problems.

Keywords: image processing, PDLC smart film, smart windows, vision through windows, visual comfort
The visual linking of a building’s occupants with the outside views is a basic property of windows. However, vision through windows is not yet a metricized factor. The previous research employs a human survey methods to assess the vision through conventional windows. The recently fabricated smart films add a changeable visual transparency feature to the windows. The varied operating transparency challenges the evaluation of vision. Therefore, surveying human preferences is no longer a feasible approach for smart windows. This paper proposes an image-processing-based approach to quantify the vision quality through smart windows. The proposed method was experimentally applied to a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) double-glazed window. The system instantaneously determines the available contrast band of the scenes seen through the window. The system adjusts the excitation of the PDLC film to maintain a desired vision level within the determined vision band. A preferred vision ratio... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: bubble pulsation, gas jet, nozzle, underwater detonation
The subject of a gas jet generated by underwater detonation is an important issue in the field of underwater propulsion. The experimental system of underwater detonation is established, which utilizes a high-speed camera to record the morphological changes in bubbles and various pressure sensors to measure the flow field pressure. The effect of nozzles and the pressure of the flow field are analyzed thoroughly. The comparison of the bubble and field pressure shows that the shrinking nozzle increases the peak pressure of the transmitted shock wave generated by underwater detonation compared with that of the straight nozzle. Simultaneously, the water−air mixing phenomenon caused by the gas jet is enhanced. Under the influence of the reflected shock wave and the converging angle of the nozzle, the pulsation process of the bubble is inhibited enormously, which results in the bubble energy being substantially below that of the straight nozzle. The bubble pulsation period is 24.2 ms when the... [more]

Keywords: arbitrarily layered soil, dynamic impedance, horizontal vibration, linear viscoelastic medium, tapered pile
A tapered pile (TP) is a new type of pile with a good bearing capacity, and scholars have conducted in-depth research on its static bearing characteristics. However, there is relatively little research on its dynamic bearing characteristics. In this paper, the horizontal vibration behavior of a tapered pile in arbitrarily layered soil is studied. Utilizing the Winkler foundation model and Timoshenko beam model to simulate pile-surrounding soil (PSS) and a tapered pile, respectively, the horizontal vibration model of a tapered pile embedded in layered soil was built. The analytical solutions for the horizontal displacement (HD), bending moment (BM), and shear force (SF) of a tapered pile were derived, and then the solutions for the horizontal dynamic impedance (HDI), rocking dynamic impedance (RDI), and horizontal-rocking coupling dynamic impedance (HRDI) of pile head were obtained. Using the present solutions, the effects of soil and pile properties on the horizontal vibration characte... [more]

Trends in Research on Energy Efficiency in Appliances and Correlations with Energy Policies
David Vérez, Emiliano Borri, Luisa F. Cabeza
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: appliance, bibliometric analysis, climate change, Energy Efficiency, label, policies
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 5th Assessment report, energy-efficient appliances can reduce global electricity consumption even though there is an expected increase in the number and ownership of appliances. The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects a high increase in energy efficiency in traditional appliances (refrigerators, washing machines, television, etc.), and in the number of new appliances installed (also called plug loads). The bibliometric study of publications related to energy-efficient appliances carried out in this paper shows that research on this topic is growing in developed regions (North America and Europe) and even more in some developing regions (Asia Pacific) with a high emphasis on China and India. The results indicate that, in general, policies are always implemented before the core of publications on the topic, with time spans ranging from 3 to 30 years. However, the trend seems to be changing with publications related t... [more]

This work presents an investigation of the fully strained GaAsN/GaAs heterostructures obtained by atmospheric pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy, focusing on the analysis of the strain generated in the GaAsN epilayers and its correlation with the formation of split interstitial complexes (N-As)As. We analyzed strained GaAsN epilayers with nitrogen contents and thicknesses varying from 0.93 to 1.81% and 65 to 130 nm, respectively. The composition and thickness were determined by high resolution X-ray diffraction, and the strain was determined by Raman spectroscopy, while the N-bonding configurations were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We found that the strain generated in the GaAsN epilayers is mainly caused by a lattice mismatch with the GaAs substrate. This macroscopic strain is independent of the amount of (N-As)As interstitial defects, while the local strain, induced by an alloying effect, tends to decrease with an increasing ratio of (N-As)As interstitial de... Subject: Other
Keywords: consequent pole, stator PM, Vernier machine
In this study, a torque enhancement principle for a stator permanent-magnet (PM) Vernier machine with a consequent pole structure is proposed. The novelty of the manuscript is the explanation of how stator PM Vernier machines benefit from consequent pole structure. Although a similar concept of stator PM Vernier machines with a consequent pole structure has been investigated in previous studies, a clear torque enhancement principle was absent. The keys to torque enhancement are the decrement of nonworking harmonics and increment of working harmonics. To demonstrate these phenomena, the torque contributions from the harmonics were calculated. Subsequently, the performances of the conventional machine and consequent pole machine were compared to verify the enhancement principle. The electromagnetic performances, including the back electromotive force and torque, were compared. The results show that the stator PM Vernier machine benefits significantly from torque enhancement using the con... [more]
