Investigating Agglomeration Tendency of Co-Gasification between High Alkali Biomass and Woody Biomass in a Bubbling Fluidized Bed System
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bed agglomeration, co-gasification, EFB, FactSage, fluidized bed, gasification.
Palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) is known as problematic biomass due to its high alkali content, i.e., more than half of inorganic matter is potassium (K). EFB when used as a fuel in fluidized beds with silica sand as bed material could form the sticky compound K2O·nSiO2 starting at around 750 °C and adhere bed particles together, resulting in bed agglomeration. Blending EFB with rubber wood sawdust (RWS) could improve the chemical properties and consequent ash composition of the blended fuel. In this study, RWS was blended with EFB at three ratios: RWS:EFB = 25:75, RWS:EFB = 50:50, and RWS:EFB = 75:25. Adding RWS to the fuel prolonged de-fluidization time. The high content of CaO in the RWS ash acted as an inhibitor to prevent the formation of K2O·nSiO2 and, instead, enhanced the formation of K2CO3, a higher melting point compound, which reduced bed agglomeration. During the experiment using RWS:EFB = 75:25, no bed agglomeration was found.

Valorization of Bio-Briquette Fuel by Using Spent Coffee Ground as an External Additive
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: calorific value, Coffea spp., mechanical durability, solid biofuel, waste biomass, waste management.
The present study investigates the quality changes of wood bio-briquette fuel after the addition of spent coffee ground (SCG) into the initial feedstock materials (sawdust, shavings) in different mass ratios (1:1, 1:3). Analysis of SCGs fuel parameter proved great potential for energy generation by a process of direct combustion. Namely, level of calorific value (GCV = 21.58 MJ∙kg−1), of ash content (Ac = 1.49%) and elementary composition (C = 55.49%, H = 7.07%, N = 2.38%, O = 33.41%) supports such statement. A comparison with results of initial feedstock materials exhibited better results of SCG in case of its calorific value and elementary composition. Bulk density ρ (kg·m−3) and mechanical durability DU (%) of bio-briquette samples from initial feedstock materials were following for sawdust: ρ = 1026.39 kg·m−3, DU = 98.44% and shavings: ρ = 1036.53 kg·m−3, DU = 96.70%. The level of such mechanical quality indicators changed after the addition of SCG. Specifically, SCG+sawdust mixtur... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Aspen Plus, biomass gasification, equilibrium model, Gibbs free energy minimization, hazelnut shells, steam gasification, Syngas, tar.
In the delicate context of climate change, biomass gasification has been demonstrated to be a very useful technology to produce power and hydrogen. Nevertheless, in literature, there is a lack of a flexible and fast but accurate model of biomass gasification that can be used with all the combinations of oxidizing agents, taking into account both organic and inorganic contaminants, and able to give results that are more realistic. In order to do that, a model of biomass gasification has been developed using the chemical engineering software Aspen Plus. The developed model is based on the Gibbs free energy minimization applying the restricted quasi-equilibrium approach via Data-Fit regression from experimental data. The simulation results obtained, considering different mixes of gasifying agents, were compared and validated against experimental data reported in literature for the most advanced fluidized bed technology. The maximum discrepancy value obtained for hydrogen, with respect to... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: auxiliary power supply system, digital synchronous rectification, LLC DC-DC converter, phase shift control, SiC MOSFET.
In this paper, a new auxiliary power supply system of magnetic levitation based on the LLC DC-DC converter is proposed. The switches of the DC-DC converter are SiC MOSFET, which enables high frequency, high temperature, and high power density. For further improving the efficiency of the system and realizing the stability of the output voltage under different load conditions, the digital synchronous rectification (DSR) based on the phase shift control strategy is proposed. The prototype of the LLC DC-DC converter based on SiC MOSFET is implemented, which can realize zero voltage switching (ZVS) and zero current switching (ZCS). Then, the thermal image of DSR is presented, which proves that the power loss of SiC MOSFET with DSR is relatively low. Additionally, the system efficiency among the Si IGBT, SiC MOSFET, and SiC MOSFET with DSR is analyzed and the prototype demonstrates 98% peak efficiency. Location and Sizing of Battery Energy Storage Units in Low Voltage Distribution Networks
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Proper planning of the installation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) in distribution networks is needed to maximize the overall technical and economic benefits. The limited lifetime and relatively high cost of BESSs require appropriate decisions on their installation and deployment, in order to make the best investment. This paper proposes a comprehensive method to fully support the BESS location and sizing in a low-voltage (LV) network, taking into account the characteristics of the local generation and demand connected at the network nodes, and the time-variable generation and demand patterns. The proposed procedure aims to improve the overall network conditions, by considering both technical and economic aspects. An original approach is presented to consider both the planning and scheduling of BESSs in an LV system. This approach combines the properties of metaheuristics for BESS sizing and placement with a greedy algorithm to find viable BESS scheduling in a relatively sho... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air separation unit, cavitation, cryogenic liquid turbine expander, design optimization, energy saving.
An air-separation unit (ASU) uses atmospheric air to produce essential pure gaseous and liquid products for many industrial sectors but requires intensive power consumption. In recent years, cryogenic liquid turbine expanders have been used to replace the traditional J-T valves in air-separation units to save energy. In this paper, an effective design optimization method is proposed to suppress swirling flow and mitigate cavitation in liquid turbines. A flexible tuning of the impeller and fairing cone geometries is simultaneously realized, where the optimization variables are identified via a geometric sensitivity study. A novel objective function is deliberately established by allowing both swirling flow and cavitation characteristics, driving the optimizer to search for deswirling and cavitation-resistant geometries. A kriging surrogate model with an adaptive sampling strategy and a cooperative co-evolution algorithm (CCEA) are incorporated to solve the highly nonlinear optimization... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control tuning, controller validation, frequency stability, hybrid power plant, model-based design, off-grid electricity systems, small-signal analysis, state-space model, voltage stability.
This paper proposes detailed and practical guidance on applying model-based design (MBD) for voltage and frequency stability assessments, control tuning and verification of off-grid hybrid power plants (HPPs) comprising both grid-forming and grid-feeding inverter units and synchronous generation. First, the requirement specifications are defined by means of system, functional and model requirements. Using the Thermal Inertia of Transmission Lines for Coping with Post-Contingency Overflows
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: corrective control, post-contingency overflow, preventive control, security-constrained OPF, thermal inertia, transmission line.
For the corrective security-constrained optimal power flow (OPF) model, there exists a post-contingency stage due to the time delay of corrective measures. Line overflows in this stage may cause cascading failures. This paper proposes that the thermal inertia of transmission lines can be used to cope with post-contingency overflows. An enhanced security-constrained OPF model is established and line dynamic thermal behaviors are quantified. The post-contingency stage is divided into a response substage and a ramping substage and the highest temperatures are limited by thermal rating constraints. A solving strategy based on Benders decomposition is proposed to solve the established model. The original problem is decomposed into a master problem for preventive control and two subproblems for corrective control feasibility check and line thermal rating check. In each iteration, Benders cuts are generated for infeasible contingencies and returned into the master problem for adjusting the ge... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: comparative research, empirical model, isentropic efficiency, marine compressor, mass flow rate.
A compressor is an indispensable component of marine large two-stroke diesel engines. For this type of engine, the compressor mass flow rate and isentropic efficiency empirical models are preferred for both the working cycle dynamic simulation research and the design and testing of control and diagnostics algorithms due to their compact and simple structures, and satisfactory prediction accuracy. Due to absence of comprehensive applicable and comparative research on compressor mass flow rate and isentropic efficiency empirical models for large-scale marine compressors in the literature, two marine compressors with different size, flow rate range, and speed range were selected as research objects in this paper, and a relevant study was conducted to compare and analyze the prediction ability of several classical models, and some recently proposed compressor mass flow rate and isentropic efficiency empirical models. March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: deep neural network, pose classification, thermal environment.
This study aims to propose a pose classification model using indoor occupant images. For developing the intelligent and automated model, a deep learning neural network was employed. Indoor posture images and joint coordinate data were collected and used to conduct the training and optimization of the model. The output of the trained model is the occupant pose of the sedentary activities in the indoor space. The performance of the developed model was evaluated for two different indoor environments: home and office. Using the metabolic rates corresponding to the classified poses, the model accuracy was compared with that of the conventional method, which considered the fixed activity. The result showed that the accuracy was improved by as much as 73.96% and 55.26% in home and office, respectively. Thus, the potential of the pose classification model was verified for providing a more comfortable and personalized thermal environment to the occupant.

Tests to Ensure the Minimum Methane Concentration for Gas Engines to Limit Atmospheric Emissions
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: coal seam mining, gas engines, greenhouse gas, methane emissions.
During the extraction of hard coal in Polish conditions, methane is emitted, which is referred to as ‘mine gas’. As a result of the desorption of methane, a greenhouse gas is released from coal seams. In order to reduce atmospheric emissions, methane from coal seams is captured by a methane drainage system. On the other hand, methane, which has been separated into underground mining excavations, is discharged into the atmosphere with a stream of ventilation air. For many years, Polish hard coal mines have been capturing methane to ensure the safety of the crew and the continuity of mining operations. As a greenhouse gas, methane has a significant potential, as it is more effective at absorbing and re-emitting radiation than carbon dioxide. The increase in the amount of methane in the atmosphere is a significant factor influencing global warming, however, it is not as strong as the increase in carbon dioxide. Therefore, in Polish mines, the methane−air mixture captured in the methane dr... [more]

Novel Adsorption Cycle for High-Efficiency Adsorption Heat Pumps and Chillers: Modeling and Simulation Results
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adsorption cycle, adsorption system, heat recovery, Modelling, Simulation, stratified thermal storage, thermodynamic cycle.
A novel thermodynamic cycle for adsorption heat pumps and chillers is presented. It shows a significant improvement of the internal heat recovery between the adsorption and the desorption half cycle. A stratified thermal storage, which allows for a temperature-based extraction and insertion of storage fluid, is hydraulically coupled with a single adsorber. The benefit is an increased efficiency by reusing the released heat of adsorption for regeneration of the adsorber and by rendering possible low driving temperature differences. For investigating the second law of this cycle, a dynamic model is employed. The transient behavior of the system and the respective losses because of driving temperature differences at the heat exchangers and losses due to mixing within the storage and to the surroundings are depicted in this one-dimensional model. The model is suitable both for analyzing this advanced cycle as well as for comparisons with other cycles.

Distributed Optimization in Low Voltage Distribution Networks via Broadcast Signals †
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active distribution network, broadcast signals, low voltage distribution network, Nash equilibrium, player compatible equilibrium, voltage control.
With the development of distributed energy resources, the low voltage distribution network (LVDN) is supposed to be the integrator of small distributed energy sources. This makes the users in LVDNs multifarious, which leads to more complex modeling. Additionally, data acquisition could be tricky due to rising privacy concerns. These impose severe demands on control schemes in LVDNs that the classical centralized control might not be able to fulfill. To tackle this, a model-free control approach with distributed decision-making architecture is proposed in this paper. Employing statistical methods and game theory, individual users in LVDNs achieve local optimum autonomously. Comparing to conventional approaches applied in LVDNs, the proposed approach is able to achieve active control with less communication burden and computational resources. The paper proves the convergence to the Nash Equilibrium (NE) and uses player compatible relations to form the specific equilibrium. A variant of t... [more]

Investigating the Impact of E-Mobility on the Electrical Power Grid Using a Simplified Grid Modelling Approach
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: annual load flow calculations, cellular approach, charging profiles, distribution grid, e-mobility, power grid.
To achieve climate goals, it is necessary to decarbonise the transport sector, which requires an immediate changeover to alternative power sources (e.g., battery powered vehicles). This change will lead to an increase in the demand for electrical energy, which will cause additional stress on power grids. It is therefore necessary to evaluate energy and power requirements of a future society using e-mobility. Therefore, we present a new approach to investigate the influence of increasing e-mobility on a distribution grid level. This includes the development of a power grid model based on a cellular approach, reducing computation efforts, and allowing time and spatially resolved grid stress analysis based on different load and renewable energy source scenarios. The results show that by using the simplified grid model at least seven times, more scenarios can be calculated in the same time. Accurate temperature estimation inside an electrical motor is key for condition monitoring, fault detection, and enhanced end-of-life duration. Additionally, thermal information can benefit motor control to improve operational performance. Lumped-parameter thermal networks (LPTNs) for electrical machines are both flexible and cost-effective in computation time, which makes them attractive for use in real-time condition monitoring and integration in motor control. Subject: Materials
Keywords: hydrothermal synthesis, Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) catalysts, perovskite, supercapacitors, three-dimensional (3D) structure.
Supercapacitors are attractive as a major energy storage device due to their high coulombic efficiency and semi-permanent life cycle. Transition metal oxides are used as electrode material in supercapacitors due to their high conductivity, capacitance, and multiple oxidation states. Nanopowder transition metal oxides exhibit low specific surface area, ion diffusion, electrical conductivity, and structural stability compared with the three-dimensional (3D) structure. Furthermore, unstable performance during long-term testing can occur via structural transition. SOC Estimation of Lead Carbon Batteries Based on the Operating Conditions of an Energy Storage System in a Microgrid System
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: composite algorithm, energy storage system (ESS), microgrid system, state of charge (SOC), wavelet transform.
The environment for practical applications of an energy storage system (ESS) in a microgrid system is very harsh, and therefore actual operating conditions become complex and changeable. In addition, the signal of the ESS sampling process contains a great deal of system and measurement noise, the sampled current fluctuates significantly, and also has high frequency. In this case, under such conditions, it is difficult to accurately estimate the state of charge (SOC) of the batteries in the ESS by common estimation methods. Therefore, this study proposes a compound SOC estimation method based on wavelet transform. This algorithm is very suitable for microgrid systems with large current, frequent fluctuating conditions, and high noise interference. The experimental results and engineering data show that the relative error of the method is 0.5%, which is much lower than the extend Kalman filter (EKF) based on wavelet transform.
