March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: advanced exergetic analysis, exergetic analysis, Exergy Efficiency, H2 fuel, improved exergy efficiency, performance evaluation, turbojet engine
This study dealt with evaluating the (J85-GE-5H) military turbojet engine (TJE) in terms of exergetic and advanced exergetic analyses at Military (MIL) and Afterburner (AB) process modes by utilizing kerosene (JP-8) and hydrogen (H2) fuels. First, exergy and advanced exergy analyses of the engine were performed using JP-8 fuel as per actual engine operating conditions. These analyses of the turbojet engine using hydrogen fuel were also examined parametrically. The performance evaluation of the engine was lastly executed by comparing the obtained results for both fuels. Based on the parametric studies undertaken, the entire engine’s exergetic efficiency with JP-8 was reckoned 30.85% at the MIL process mode while it was calculated as 16.98% at the AB process mode. With the usage of H2, the efficiencies of the engine decreased to 28.62% and 15.33% for the above mentioned two modes, respectively. As the supreme exergy destructions occurred in the combustion chamber (CC) and afterburner exh... [more]

Scenario Selection for Iterative Stochastic Transmission Expansion Planning
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: bi-level optimization, operation research in energy, scenario selection, transmission expansion planning, uncertainty
Reliable transmission expansion planning is critical to power systems’ development. To make reliable and sustainable transmission expansion plans, numerous sources of uncertainty including demand, generation capacity, and fuel cost must be taken into consideration in both spatial and temporal dimensions. This paper presents a new approach to selecting a small number of high-quality scenarios for transmission expansion. The Kantorovich distance of social welfare distributions was used to assess the quality of the selected scenarios. A case study was conducted on a power system model that represents the U.S. Eastern and Western Interconnections, and ten high-quality scenarios out of a total of one million were selected for two transmission plans. Results suggested that scenarios selected using the proposed algorithm were able to provide a much more accurate estimation of the value of transmission plans than other scenario selection algorithms in the literature.

Thermal Assessment of Laminar Flow Liquid Cooling Blocks for LED Circuit Boards Used in Automotive Headlight Assemblies
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: automotive headlight, Computational Fluid Dynamics, finned plate, junction temperature, laminar flow, LED chip, liquid cooling
This research work presents a comparative thermal performance assessment of the laminar flow cooling blocks produced for automotive headlight assembly using a high power Light Emitting Diode (LED) chip. A three-dimensional numerical model with conjugate heat transfer in solid and fluid domains was used. Laminar flow was considered in the present analysis. The validation of the numerical model was realized by using the measured data from the test rig. It was observed that substantial temperature variations were occurred around the LED chip owing to volumetric heat generation. The cooling board with lower height performs better thermal performance but higher pressure drop for the same mass flow rates. The cooling board with the finned cover plate performs better thermal performance but results in an increased pressure drop for the same mass flow rates. Increasing the power of the LED results in higher temperature values for the same mass flow rates. The junction temperature is highly dep... [more]

Extrusion and Characterization of High Si/Al Ratio ZSM-5 Using Silica Binder
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Adsorption, biogas upgrading, extrusion, shaping, zeolite, ZSM-5
Biogas upgrading is a key operation for transforming raw biogas into valuable biomethane that can be used as fuel or transported through pipelines. Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) is one possible technique that can be used for upgrading. ZSM-5 with high silica/aluminum (Si/Al) ratio has a reasonable CO2/CH4 selectivity and an almost linear CO2 adsorption isotherm, which can reduce power consumption. Extrusion of zeolites uses Al-based binders which can result in a denaturation and in a decrease of Si/Al ratio, promoting a steeper CO2 isotherm and also impacting the water adsorption. In this work, we have extruded a ZSM-5 (with a Si/Al = 200) using only silica-based binder. Different samples were obtained using different extrusion paste compositions and operating conditions and their textural properties characterized. The mechanical strength of the samples as well as the CO2, CH4, and H2O adsorption equilibrium isotherms at 303−343 K were measured. Our results show that it is possible t... [more]

Novel Simulation Algorithm for Modeling the Hysteresis of Phase Change Materials
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: EnergyPlus, hysteresis, phase change material, simulations, thermal energy storage
Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) using phase change materials (PCM) is one of the most promising ways for thermal energy storage (TES), especially in lightweight buildings. However, accurate control of the phase transition of PCM is not easy to predict. For example, neglecting the hysteresis or the effect of the speed of phase change processes reduces the accuracy of simulations of TES. In this paper, the authors propose a new software module for EnergyPlus™ that aims to simulate the hysteresis of PCMs during the phase change. The new module is tested by comparing simulation results with experimental tests done in a climatic chamber. A strong consistency between experimental and simulation results was obtained, while a discrepancy error of less than 1% was obtained. Moreover, in real conditions, as a result of quick temperature changes, only a partial phase transformation of the material is often observed. The new model also allows the consideration of the case with partial p... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal facies, coalbed methane reservoir, pore-fracture network, Sangjiang-Muling basin
The pore-fractures network plays a key role in coalbed methane (CBM) accumulation and production, while the impacts of coal facies on the pore-fractures network performance are still poorly understood. In this work, the research on the pore-fracture occurrence of 38 collected coals from Sangjiang-Muling coal-bearing basins with multiple techniques, including mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), micro-organic quantitative analysis, and optic microscopy, and its variation controlling of coal face were studied. The MIP curves of 38 selected coals, indicating pore structures, were subdivided into three typical types, including type I of predominant micropores, type Ⅱ of predominant micropores and macropores with good connectivity, and type Ⅲ of predominant micropores and macropores with poor connectivity. For coal facies, three various coal facies were distinguished, including lake shore coastal wet forest swamp, the upper delta plain wet forest swamp, tidal flat wet forest swamp using Q-c... [more]

A New Approach for Fault Detection, Location and Diagnosis by Ultrasonic Testing
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault detection and diagnosis, guided waves, non-destructive tests, wavelet transforms, wind turbine blade
Wind turbine blades are constantly submitted to different types of particles such as dirt, ice, etc., as well as all the different environmental parameters that affect the behaviour and efficiency of the energy generation system. These parameters can cause faults to the wind turbine blades, modifying their behaviour due, for example, to the turbulence. A new method is presented in this paper based on cross-correlations to determine the presence of delamination in the blades. The experiments were conducted in two real wind turbine blades to analyse the fault and non-fault blades using ultrasonic guided waves. Finally, the energy analysis of the signal based on wavelet transforms allowed to determine energies abrupt changes in the correlation of the signals and to locate the faults.

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: destruction, dielectric barrier discharge, ozone, surface discharge, temperature
Ozone, due to its high reactivity cannot be stockpiled, and thus requires to be generated on-demand. The paper reports on laboratory studies of O3 generation in a volume dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) tubular flow-through system with a coaxial-spiral electrode arrangement. Its performance is experimentally verified and compared to a commercial surface DBD O3 source fitted with a three-electrode floating supply arrangement. The presented volume DBD design is capable of steadily producing up to 4180 ppmv O3 at 1 Nl/min unprocessed atmospheric air intake and 10 kV 1.6 kHz sinusoidal high voltage supply corresponding to 67 g/kWh O3 production yield increasing to 93 g/kWh at 100 Nl/min air intake. The effects of high voltage supply tuning are also investigated and discussed together with finite element method simulation results.

Smart Grids (SGs) can be successfully supported by Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), especially through these consisting of intelligent sensors, which are able to efficiently process the still growing amount of data. We propose a contribution to the development of such intelligent sensors, which in an advanced version can be equipped with embedded low-power artificial neural networks (ANNs), supporting the analysis and the classification of collected data. This approach allows to reduce the energy consumed by particular sensors during the communication with other nodes of a larger WSN. This in turn, facilitates the maintenance of a net of such sensors, which is a paramount feature in case of their application in SG devices distributed over a large area. In this work, we focus on a novel, energy-efficient neighborhood mechanism (NM) with the neighborhood function (NF). This mechanism belongs to main components of self learning ANNs. SiC-Based High Efficiency High Isolation Dual Active Bridge Converter for a Power Electronic Transformer
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: antiparallel diode, dual active bridge, high-frequency transformer, power electronic transformer, SiC devices
This paper discusses the benefits of using silicon carbide (SiC) devices in a three-stage modular power electronic transformer. According to the requirements to be fulfilled by each stage, the second one (the DC/DC isolation converter) presents the most estimable improvements to be gained from the use of SiC devices. Therefore, this paper is focused on this second stage, implemented with a SiC-based dual active bridge. Selection of the SiC devices is detailed tackling the efficiency improvement which can be obtained when they are co-packed with SiC antiparallel Schottky diodes in addition to their intrinsic body diode. This efficiency improvement is dependent on the dual active bridge operation point. Hence, a simple device loss model is presented to assess the efficiency improvement and understand the reasons for this dependence. Experimental results from a 5-kW Dual Active Bridge prototype have been obtained to validate the model. The dual active bridge converter is also tested as pa... [more]

Impacts of a LVRT Control Strategy of Offshore Wind Farms on the HTS Power Cable
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: HTS power cable, low voltage ride through, LVRT control, offshore wind farm
High temperature superconducting (HTS) power cables are a potential solution for the grid integration of offshore wind farms since the HTS cable can conduct bulk wind power at low voltage levels. However, the transient current through the HTS cable in cases of low voltage ride through (LVRT) operation has a negative impact on the HTS cable operation due to the quenching phenomenon. This paper analyzes the impact of LVRT control strategies on the HTS cable operation. In addition, a coordinated control of wind turbines for LVRT improvement of an offshore wind farm is proposed. The feasibility of the HTS cable application for the grid connection of offshore wind farms is also discussed in this study. The proposed controller is designed for the wind turbine generator based on a type-4 permanent magnet synchronous generator. In the proposed controller, the transient current through the HTS cable is reduced by regulating the machine side power during fault conditions. The feasibility of the... [more]

Model Predictive Base Direct Speed Control of Induction Motor Drive—Continuous and Finite Set Approaches
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: continuous set, finite set, induction motor drive, Model Predictive Control
In the paper a comparative study of the two control structures based on MPC (Model Predictive Control) for an electrical drive system with an induction motor are presented. As opposed to the classical approach, in which DFOC (Direct Field Oriented Control) with four controllers is considered, in the current study only one MPC controller is utilized. The proposed control structures have a cascade free structure that consists of a vector of electromagnetic (torque, flux) and mechanical (speed) states of the system. The first investigated framework is based on the finite-set MPC. A short horizon predictive window is selected. The continuous set MPC is used in the second framework. In this case the predictive horizon contains several samples. The computational complexity of the algorithm is reduced by applying its explicit version. Different implementation aspects of both MPC structures, for instance the model used in prediction, complexity of the control algorithms, and their properties t... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive control, pitch control, rotor angular speed, torque control, wind turbine
In this paper, robust adaptive control is designed for pitch and torque control of the wind turbines operating under turbulent wind conditions. The dynamics of the wind turbine are formulated by considering the five degrees of freedom system (rotor angle, gearbox angle, generator angle, flap-wise deflection of the rotor blade, and axial displacement of the nacelle). The controller is designed to maintain the rotor speed, maximize the aerodynamic efficiency of the wind turbine, and reduce the loads due to high wind speeds. Gaussian probability distribution function is used for approximating the wind speed, which is given as the disturbance input to the plant. The adaptive control algorithm is implemented to 2 MW and 5 MW wind turbines to test the robustness of the controller for varying parameters. The simulation is carried out using MATLAB/Simulink for three cases, namely pitch control, torque control, and the combined case. A case study is done to validate the proposed adaptive contro... Nanostructured Carbon Material Effect on the Synthesis of Carbon-Supported Molybdenum Carbide Catalysts for Guaiacol Hydrodeoxygenation
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbothermal hydrogen reduction, hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol, Mo2C catalysts, nanostructured carbon materials
The impact of using different nanostructured carbon materials (carbon nanofibers, carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide and activated carbon) as a support for Mo2C-based catalysts on the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of guaiacol was studied. To optimise the catalyst preparation by carbothermal hydrogen reduction (CHR), a thermogravimetric study was conducted to select the optimum CHR temperature for each carbon material, considering both the crystal size of the resulting β-Mo2C particles and the extent of the support gasification. Subsequently, catalysts were prepared in a fixed bed reactor at the optimum temperature. Catalyst characterization evidenced the differences in the catalyst morphology as compared to those prepared in the thermogravimetric study. The HDO results demonstrated that the carbon nanofiber-based catalyst was the one with the best catalytic performance. This behaviour was attributed to the high thermal stability of this support, which prevented its gasification and promoted a... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: conductivity, DRT, SOFC, thin-layer supporting electrolyte, triple-layer electrolyte
The paper presents the results of an investigation into thin single- and triple-layer ZrO2-Sc2O3-based electrolytes prepared using the tape-casting technique in combination with promising electrodes based on La2NiO4+δ and Ni-Ce0.8Sm0.2O2-δ materials. It is shown that pressing and joint sintering of single electrolyte layers allows multilayer structures to be obtained that are free of defects at the layer interface. Electrical conductivity measurements of a triple-layer electrolyte carried out in longitudinal and transverse directions with both direct and alternating current showed resistance of the interface between the layers on the total resistance of the electrolyte to be minimal. Long-term tests have shown that the greatest degradation in resistance over time occurs in the case of an electrolyte with a tetragonal structure. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: distributed generation, electric vehicles, energy management, Optimization, smart grid
Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and Distributed Generation (DG) are topics in a large number of recent research works. Moreover, given the increasing adoption of EVs, high capacity EV batteries can be used as ESS, as most vehicles remain idle for long periods during work or home parking. However, the high EV penetration introduces some issues related to the charging power requirements, thereby increasing the peak demand for microgrids where EV chargers are installed. In addition, photovoltaic distributed generation is becoming another issue to deal with in EV charging microgrids. Therefore, this new scenario requires an Energy Management System (EMS) able to deal with charging demand, as well as with generation intermittency. This paper presents an EMS strategy for Microgrids that contain an EV parking lot (EVM), Photovoltaic (PV) arrays, and dynamic loads connected to the grid considering a Point of Common Coupling (PCC). Subject: Other
Keywords: efficiency, gray wolf optimization method, line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor, metaheuritsic algorithm, optimal design
The paper presents the optimization method and computer software for the design of a low-power line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM). The in-house-developed computer software was created with two independent modules: (a) the optimization procedure and (b) the numerical model of the motor. The optimization procedure used was a metaheuristic optimization method based on the gray wolf algorithm. Four design variables linked to the rotor structure were selected. The optimization process was performed from the rotor of a low-power induction motor (IM). The prototype of the motor (LSPMSM) was then built. The experimental measurements were performed for base the IM and optimized LSPMSM. The results of the measurements were compared for both motors. The experimental results confirmed the better performance of the designed motor in comparison to the induction motor.

A New Concept and a Test of a Bubble Pump System for Passive Heat Transport from Solar Collectors
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: anti-gravity, bubble pump, passive heat transport, solar collector, thermosiphon
Heat is usually transported by hydraulic circuits where the working medium is circulated by an electric pump. Heat can also be transferred by natural convection in passive systems. Passive systems where heat is transported downward have also been described and studied in the literature. These types of devices are referred to as reverse thermosiphons. However, systems of the type are not widely applied in practice due to the problems associated with the selection of the optimal working medium. In water-based thermosiphons, negative pressure is produced when water temperature falls below 100 °C, and non-condensable gas can enter the system. These problems are not encountered in systems where the working medium has a low boiling point. However, liquids with a low boiling point can be explosive, expensive, and harmful to the environment. The solution proposed in this paper combines the advantages of water and a liquid with a low boiling point. The described system relies on water as the he... [more]

Formulation of Coefficient of Performance Characteristics of Water-cooled Chillers and Evaluation of Composite COP for Combined Chillers
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: Coefficient of Performance, cooling tower, cooling water temperature, energy consumption, equipment master planning, outside air specific enthalpy, partial load, water-cooled chiller
The Coefficient of Performance of an ordinary water-cooled chiller is presented as a relationship with the chiller load factor and cooling water temperature. However, the cooling water temperature fluctuates according to the processed heat of the cooling tower originating in the cooling energy of the chiller and to the outside temperature and humidity. It is therefore difficult to obtain the cooling water temperature under the processed-heat and weather conditions at the time of evaluation. This, in turn, makes it difficult to determine the Coefficient of Performance of a water-cooled chiller at the evaluation time. In this research, we formulated the Coefficient of Performance of a water-cooled chiller as a relationship with the chiller load factor and specific enthalpy of outside air. Specifically, we used the Number of Transfer Units (NTU) model of a cooling tower to calculate the cooling water temperature corresponding to the cooling-tower load factor targeting a counterflow coolin...
