Security Assessment and Coordinated Emergency Control Strategy for Power Systems with Multi-Infeed HVDCs
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electromagnetic transient (EMT)-transient stability (TS) hybrid simulation, emergency control strategy, multi-infeed HVDCs, receiving-end system, security assessment
Short-circuit faults in a receiving-end power system can lead to blocking events of the feed-in high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) systems, which may further result in system instability. However, security assessment methods based on the transient stability (TS) simulation can hardly catch the fault propagation phenomena between AC and DC subsystems. Moreover, effective emergency control strategies are needed to prevent such undesired cascading events. This paper focuses on power systems with multi-infeed HVDCs. An on-line security assessment method based on the electromagnetic transient (EMT)-TS hybrid simulation is proposed. DC and AC subsystems are modeled in EMTDC/PSCAD and PSS/E, respectively. In this way, interactions between AC and DC subsystems can be well reflected. Meanwhile, high computational efficiency is maintained for the on-line application. In addition, an emergency control strategy is developed, which coordinates multiple control resources, including HVDCs, pumped sto... [more]

A Virtual Tool for Load Flow Analysis in a Micro-Grid
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distributed generation, load flow, measurement uncertainties, micro-grid, power system, smart grid
This paper proposes a virtual tool for load flow analysis in energy distribution systems of micro-grids. The solution is based on a low-cost measurement architecture, which entails low-voltage power measurements in each secondary substation and a voltage measurement at the beginning of the medium voltage (MV) feeder. The proposed virtual tool periodically queries these instruments to acquire the measurements. Then, it implements a backward−forward load flow algorithm, to evaluate the power flow in each branch and the voltage at each node. The virtual tool performances are validated using power measurements acquired at the beginning of each MV feeder. The uncertainties on each calculated quantity are also evaluated starting from the uncertainties due to the used measurement instruments. Moreover, the influence of the line parameter uncertainties on the evaluated quantities is also considered. The validated tool is useful for the online analysis of power flows and also for planning purpo... [more]

Effect of the Particle Size on the Near-Wall Turbulence Characteristics of the Polymer Fluid Flow and the Critical Velocity Required for Particle Removal from the Sand Bed Deposited in Horizontal Wells
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: drilling fluids, hole cleaning, horizontal wells, particle size, PIV, turbulent flow
Water-based polymer drilling fluids are commonly used for drilling long horizontal wells where eliminating the drilling fluid-related formation damage and minimizing the environmental impact of the drilling fluids are the main concerns. An experimental study was conducted to investigate the turbulent flow of a polymer fluid over a stationary sand bed deposited in a horizontal pipeline. The main objectives of the study were to determine the effects of sand particle size on the critical velocity required for the onset of the bed erosion and the near-wall turbulence characteristics of the polymer fluid flow over the sand bed. Industrial sand particles having three different size ranges (20/40, 30/50, 40/70) were used for the experiments. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to determine instantaneous local velocity distributions and near-wall turbulence characteristics (such as Reynolds stress, axial and turbulence intensity profiles) of the polymer fluid flow over the... Performance Evaluation of Control Methods for PV-Integrated Shading Devices
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural networks, electricity production, optimum louver slat angle, PV-integrated shading device, visual comfort
This study aimed to develop a building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) device and optimal control methods that increase the photovoltaic (PV) efficiency and visual comfort of the indoor space. A louver-type PV-integrated shading device was suggested and an artificial neural networks (ANN) model was developed to predict PV electricity output, work plane illuminance, and daylight glare index (DGI). The slat tilt angle of the shading device was controlled to maximize PV electricity output based on three different strategies: one without visual comfort constraints, and the other two with visual comfort constraints: work plane illuminance and DGI. Optimal tilt angle was calculated using predictions of the ANN. Experiments were conducted to verify the system modeling and to evaluate the performance of the shading device. Experiment results revealed that the ANN model successfully predicted the PV output, work plane illuminance, and DGI. The PV-integrated shading device was more efficient in p... [more]

Effect of Soil Resistivity Measurement on the Safe Design of Grounding Systems
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: grounding system, soil models, soil resistivity, step voltage, touch voltage, uncertainty of measurement
A prerequisite for the proper and safe designing of a grounding system is the full knowledge of the ground structure in the terrain of installation. Through soil resistivity measurements, engineers are able to illustrate the ground profile, which constitutes the most significant parameter for the design of a grounding system and for determining the maximum permissible limits of step and touch voltages. This paper highlights the high importance and necessity for engineers to choose the proper measurement axes of soil resistivity in the terrain of interest and to choose suitable measurement depths, as well the combination of axes for the final determination of the ground profile. The variance of soil resistivity values, as a function of axis distance and the impact of axis placement on determining the uncertainty of measurements, is also analyzed in detail in this study. Furthermore, this work studies the value variance of step and touch voltages as a function of measurement axes, consid... [more]

Performance Characteristics of Single-Phase Self-Excited Induction Generators with an Iron Core of Various Non-Grain Oriented Electrical Sheets
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: field–circuit model, induction generator, load characteristics, magnetization curves, self-excitation, single-phase
This paper deals with the computation of the performance characteristics of the single-phase self-excited induction generator by field−circuit method. It presents and compares previously unpublished results—self-excitation and no-load characteristics of the generator for different rotor speeds, and complete load steady-state performance characteristics for various types of the core materials. The discrepancies between the performance characteristics of the generator for the catalog’s magnetization curves of different types of electrical sheets and for an actual magnetic core of the generator for self-excitation transients and load steady-state are presented. The results may be useful for designing new constructions of single-phase self-excited induction generators.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: additive manufacturing, co-axial magnetic gear, local and global force, Maxwell Stress Tensor, soft magnetic composite materials, structural analysis
The paper presents an analysis of local and global forces acting on the ferromagnetic material of a modulator in a co-axial magnetic gear, taking several design variants and the impact of loading into account. The analyses include a modulator with cores manufactured from a soft-magnetic composite material and two variants made from electrical steel with laminations stacked in different directions. Variations of local forces acting on individual pole pieces of the modulator are analyzed at different loads, showing that the force spectra are subject to significant variation with an increasing load. The presented magnetostatic analyses are extended by structural analysis that provides estimation of stress and displacement for the modulator assembled from additively manufactured acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)-plastic parts. The analysis carried out for the least favorable design case of the magnetic circuit of the modulator shows that an application of the technology is significantl... [more]

Derivation of OCC Modulator for Grid-Tied Single-Stage Buck-Boost Inverter Operating in the Discontinuous Conduction Mode
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: buck-boost, discontinuous conduction mode, grid-tied, one-cycle control, single-stage
This paper is concerned with the derivation of a one-cycle controller for driving a single-stage buck-boost DC-AC micro-inverter in grid-tied applications. The topology under study is based on a full-bridge switch arrangement with no unfolder circuit. The proposed micro-inverter attains a high gain by applying a multi-winding tapped inductor and, therefore, can operate at grid-level voltage without using a DC-DC step-up stage. To minimize the switching loss, the proposed inverter is operated in the discontinuous conduction mode. The operation principles of the proposed topology in the discontinuous conduction mode are discussed and analyzed. Based on the analysis, the one-cycle control law and modulator circuitry needed to control the proposed micro-inverter are developed. The feasibility of the proposed modulation scheme is verified by simulation.

Decentralized Plug-and-Play Protection Scheme for Low Voltage DC Grids
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: decentralized protection scheme, fault analysis, low voltage direct current grids, plug-and-play systems, solid-state circuit breakers
Since the voltages and currents in dc grids do not have a natural zero-crossing, the protection of these grids is more challenging than the protection of conventional ac grids. Literature presents several unit and non-unit protection schemes that rely on communication, or knowledge about the system’s topology and parameters in order to achieve selective protection in these grids. However, communication complicates fast fault detection and interruption, and a system’s parameters are subject to uncertainty and change. This paper demonstrates that, in low voltage dc grids, faults propagate fast through the grid and interrupted inductive currents commutate to non-faulted sections of the grid, which both can cause circuit breakers in non-faulted sections to trip. A decentralized plug-and-play protection scheme is proposed that ensures selectivity via an augmented solid-state circuit breaker topology and by utilizing the proposed time-current characteristic. It is experimentally shown that t... [more]

Direct Power Control of a Single Stage Current Source Inverter Grid-Tied PV System
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current source inverter, direct predictive power control, power quality, single stage PV system
In this paper, a direct power predictive controller (DPPC) is derived for a current source inverter (CSI) based single stage photovoltaic (PV) system. The equations of the dynamics, including AC and DC filters, are formulated directly for the PV power and for the active and reactive power injected in the grid. Then, the prediction equations are synthesized straight for the power, and, at each time instant, the optimal switching vector that guarantees simultaneously the control of the power generated by the PV arrays, and the control of the reactive power in the connection to the grid is chosen. This approach aims to guarantee fast and accurate tracking of the power. The proposed system is then validated through simulation and experimental results, showing that the PV system is able to follow the power references, guaranteeing a fast response to a step in the power, and decoupled active and reactive power control, with minimum total harmonic distortion (<5%) of the currents injected... Partial Pilot Allocation Scheme in Multi-Cell Massive MIMO Systems for Pilot Contamination Reduction
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: channel quality, large-scale fading coefficients, massive MIMO, pilot allocation, pilot contamination, pilot sequences
Inter-cell interference has been identified as one of the major challenges of multiple-input−multiple-output (MIMO)-enabled cellular systems. This problem occurs when the same pilot sets are reused across adjacent cells to save bandwidth for data transmission. As a result, so-called pilot contamination occurs, which cannot be mitigated with an increased number of serving antennas. In this work, we proposed a partial pilot allocation scheme (PPA) to tackle the pilot contamination problem and consequently improve the uplink throughput of users in multi-cell massive MIMO systems. This was achieved by using the large-scale characteristics of the fading channel to keep users with a weak channel condition out of the effect of severe interference during the pilot allocation process. Simulation results showed that the proposed scheme outperformed both smart pilot allocation (SPA) and conventional schemes. In particular, PPA improved the uplink rate by 30% compared to the SPA—a recently propose... [more]

Spillovers to Renewable Energy Stocks in the US and Europe: Are They Different?
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fossil fuels, renewable energy stocks, spillover effects
This paper examines the spillovers of return and volatility transmitted from fossil energies (crude oil and natural gas) and several important financial variables (stock market index, bonds, and the volatility index) to renewable stock markets in the US and Europe under the time-frequency domain frameworks. The total spillovers of return and volatility from all variables to renewable stock markets in the US are higher than those in Europe. Stock markets transmit the highest return spillovers to renewable energy stocks, which far exceed the spillovers from fossil energy to renewable energy stocks in both regions. In addition, both return and volatility spillovers could be enhanced, possibly due to specific events or sudden changes in prices. In particular, extreme events such as the Brexit referendum in 2016 influenced mostly the volatility spillovers across European markets. Moreover, the spillovers of return and volatility are contingent on frequency, and most return spillovers are co... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: back surface cooling of photovoltaic panel, heat sink, photovoltaic (PV) cell, solar panel and excessive heat, solar panel performance
The increase in operating temperature of PV generators leads to degradation of their performance. These adverse effects of high temperatures are considered as one of the most important problems that solar panel operation faces in hot weather areas. A lot of research has been undertaken to study this aspect and find ways of limiting the harm caused by such high temperatures. To overcome this harm and to maintain the operating temperature of the PV cells within the optimum range specified by manufacturers, cooling the solar panels often becomes indispensable. This paper discusses the heat transfer through the solar panel layers and studies the effect of high temperature on the solar panel performance in a hot desert environment. It also presents the development of a new solar panel structure viz. by installing an aluminum heat sink to reduce the effect of temperature rise and thus improve the solar panel performance. Waste to Energy: Solid Fuel Production from Biogas Plant Digestate and Sewage Sludge by Torrefaction-Process Kinetics, Fuel Properties, and Energy Balance
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biogas digestate, carbonized solid fuel, circular economy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sewage sludge, Sustainability, waste to carbon, waste to energy
Sustainable solutions are needed to manage increased energy demand and waste generation. Renewable energy production from abundant sewage sludge (SS) and digestate (D) from biogas is feasible. Concerns about feedstock contamination (heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria) in SS and D limits the use (e.g., agricultural) of these carbon-rich resources. Low temperature thermal conversion that results in carbonized solid fuel (CSF) has been proposed as sustainable waste utilization. The aim of the research was to investigate the feasibility of CSF production from SS and D via torrefaction. The CSF was produced at 200~300 °C (interval of 20 °C) for 20~60 min (interval 20 min). The torrefaction kinetics and CSF fuel properties were determined. Next, the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of SS and D torrefaction were used to build models of energy demand for torrefaction. Finally, the evaluation of the energy ba... [more]

Investigating the Interrelationships among Occupant Attitude, Knowledge and Behaviour in LEED-Certified Buildings Using Structural Equation Modelling
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy consumption, Knowledge and Behaviour, Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), occupant environmental attitude
The proliferation of residential building energy consumption and CO2 emissions has led many countries to develop buildings under the green rating systems umbrella. Many such buildings, however, fail to meet their designed energy performance, which is possibly attributable to occupant behaviour and unforeseen building usages. The research problem lies in the fact that occupant environmental behaviour is a complex socio-cultural-technical issue that needs to be addressed to achieve the desired energy savings. This study is novel as it investigates complex interrelationships between many observed and unobserved variables using data from four LEED-certified multi-residential buildings in the United Arab Emirates. Structural Equation Modelling was used to analyse the impact of three unobserved/latent variables: occupant environmental Attitude, Knowledge and Behaviour (AKB) with respect to occupant energy consumption, based on measured/observed variables. Doubly Fed Induction Generator Open Stator Synchronized Control during Unbalanced Grid Voltage Condition
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), sequence control, synchronization, voltage unbalance, wind energy system
In this paper, a systematic synchronization procedure is proposed for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) during unbalanced grid voltage conditions. The initial induced voltage at the open stator terminal is required to synchronize with the grid voltage in magnitude, frequency and phase. An open stator negative sequence rotor current controller is implemented with the conventional DFIG vector controller, which allows the induced stator voltage to become as unbalanced as the grid voltage, hence enabling a smooth connection. A brief comparison is provided for practical issues such as controller structure variation between DFIG open stator and normal operating conditions, and initial encoder rotor angle measurement offset. The procedure is validated experimentally on a 2.2 kW laboratory-scaled DFIG test bench.

Reactive Power Control Method for Enhancing the Transient Stability Total Transfer Capability of Transmission Lines for a System with Large-Scale Renewable Energy Sources
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: reactive power control method, sensitivity between TSTTC and reactive power, TSTTC of transmission lines
With the increased proportion of intermittent renewable energy sources (RES) integrated into the sending-end, the total transfer capability of transmission lines is not sufficient during the peak periods of renewable primary energy (e.g., the wind force), causing severe RES power curtailment. The total transfer capability of transmission lines is generally restricted by the transient stability total transfer capability (TSTTC). This paper presents a reactive power control method to enhance the TSTTC of transmission lines. The key is to obtain the sensitivity between TSTTC and reactive power, while the Thevenin equivalent voltage is the link connecting TSTTC and reactive power. The Thevenin theorem states that an active circuit between two load terminals can be considered as an individual voltage source. The voltage of this source would be open-circuit voltage across the terminals, and the internal impedance of the source is the equivalent impedance of the circuit across the terminals.... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, condensation, relative humidity, transonic flow
The paper presents mathematical modelling of steam condensation in the atmospheric air transonic flows. A single-fluid model was employed. The model was validated against the in-house experimental studies of internal flow in nozzles and against benchmark tests available in literature i.e., RAE2822 transonic airfoil. The impact of air relative humidity on the condensation process under transonic flow conditions was examined. The paper shows that the impact of the condensation process in air transonic flow is non-negligible and has to be taken under consideration in flow simulations. The presence of air contaminants in form of small particles was considered too. Their crucial role in the change of the transonic flow structure was numerically confirmed.

Due to environmental issues and depletion of resources, global attentiveness in electric vehicles (EVs) is growing. In particular, research on high specification motors for driving large EVs has attracted a lot of attention. In this study, an analysis and design process for a motor that can be universally applied in heavy vehicles to reduce environmental pollution was introduced. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive control, DC voltage, dSPACE 1103, PI controller, shunt active power filter
This paper is focused on an adaptive controller for the direct current (DC) voltage in three-phase three-wire shunt active power filters systems. Although the controller structure of the proportional-integral (PI) type is determined off-line and does not change, the prescribed DC voltage and the controller parameters are calculated in an adaptation block, depending on the non-active power to be compensated. The adaptive control is based on the design expressions for the DC circuit of the shunt active power filter found by the authors, based on the detailed analysis of its operation, during the active filtering. The performances of the proposed adaptive control and its advantages compared to the classical control (where the prescribed DC voltage and the controller parameters are constant) were first determined on the virtual model of a laboratory setup.
