Streaming Electrification Phenomenon of Electrical Insulating Oils for Power Transformers
Maciej Zdanowski
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical insulation, insulation aging, insulation diagnostics, power transformers, streaming electrification
The subject matter of this study was the problem of the ECT (electrostatic charging tendency) of mineral insulation oils during their flow. The electrostatic charges generated may lead to partial discharges, and as a consequence, to the breakdown of a power transformer insulation system. In this study, the results of the ECT of mineral oils used in transformers were compared. The method of streaming electrification of insulation liquids using a flow-through system was used. The influence of flow speed, temperature, and the pipe material on the values of the electrification current and volume charge density qw were analyzed. The results obtained in this study should be taken into account regarding the operation of power transformers.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: circular transverse jet, flow field structure, jet trajectory, recirculation zone
Transverse jets in crossflow are widely used in energy systems, especially as dilution air jets, fuel/air mixers, and combustion equipment, and have received extensive attention and plenty of research. However, the studies of the circular transverse jet issued from a circular gap at the circumferential direction of a tube in crossflow are very limited. This paper studies a relatively new jet: the circular transverse jet. Firstly, numerical calculations are conducted under different turbulence models but with the same boundary conditions. By comparing the numerical results of different turbulence models with the existing experimental data, the turbulence model which is most suitable for the numerical calculation of the circular transverse jet is selected. Then, this turbulence model is used to calculate and analyze the flow field structure and its characteristics. It is found that due to the aerodynamic barrier effect of the high-velocity jet, a negative pressure zone is formed behind t... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gradient-based ILC, inspection task, Iterative Learning Control (ILC), Norm Optimal ILC, power system, quadrotor, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
Wind disturbances and noise severely affect Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) when monitoring and finding faults in overhead power lines. Accordingly, we propose repetitive learning as a new solution for the problem. In particular, the performance of Iterative Learning Control (ILC) that are based on optimal approaches are examined, namely (i) Gradient-based ILC and (ii) Norm Optimal ILC. When considering the repetitive nature of fault-finding tasks for electrical overhead power lines, this study develops, implements and evaluates optimal ILC algorithms for a UAV model. Moreover, we suggest attempting a learning gain variation on the standard optimal algorithms instead of heuristically selecting from the previous range. The results of both simulations and experiments of gradient-based norm optimal control reveal that the proposed ILC algorithm has not only contributed to good trajectory tracking, but also good convergence speed and the ability to cope with exogenous disturbances such as w... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas production, hydraulic fracturing, imbibition, shale gas formation, shut-in time
In shale gas formations, imbibition is significant since the tight pore structure causes a strong capillary suction pressure. After hydraulic fracturing, imbibition during the period of shut-in affects the water recovery of flowback. Although there have been many studies investigating imbibition in shale formations, few papers have studied the relationship between gas production and shut-in time under the influence of imbibition. This paper developed a numerical model to investigate the effect of imbibition on gas production to optimize the shut-in time after hydraulic fracturing. This numerical model is a 2-D two-phase (gas and water) imbibition model for simulating an imbibed fluid flow and its effect on permeability, flowback, and water recovery. The experimental and field data from the Woodford shale formation were matched by the model to properly configure and calibrate the model parameters. The experimental data consisted of the relationship between the imbibed fluid volume and p... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data privacy, ethics, GDPR, smart energy system, smart grids, smart meter
While smart meters can provide households with more autonomy regarding their energy consumption, they can also be a significant intrusion into the household’s privacy. There is abundant research implementing protection methods for different aspects (e.g., noise-adding and data aggregation, data down-sampling); while the private data are protected as sensitive information is hidden, some of the compulsory functions such as Time-of-use (TOU) billing or value-added services are sacrificed. Moreover, some methods, such as rechargeable batteries and homomorphic encryption, require an expensive energy storage system or central processor with high computation ability, which is unrealistic for mass roll-out. In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving smart metering system which is a combination of existing data aggregation and data down-sampling mechanisms. The system takes an angle based on the ethical concerns about privacy and it implements a hybrid privacy-utility trade-off strategy, w... [more]
An Analytical Model for Natural Convection in a Rectangular Enclosure with Differentially Heated Vertical Walls
Alberto Fichera, Manuel Marcoux, Arturo Pagano, Rosaria Volpe
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytical model, heat flux, natural convection, Nusselt number, rectangular enclosure
This paper proposes an analytical model for natural convection in a closed rectangular enclosure filled by a fluid, with imposed heat fluxes at the vertical walls and adiabatic horizontal walls. The analytical model offers a simplified, but easy to handle, description of the temperature and velocity fields. The predicted temperature, velocity, and pressure fields are shown to be in agreement with those obtained from a reliable numerical model. The Nusselt numbers for both the analytical and numerical solutions are then calculated and compared, varying both the aspect ratio of the enclosure and the Rayleigh number. Based on the comparisons, it is possible to assess the dependence of the reliability of the analytical model on the aspect ratio of the enclosure, showing that the prediction error rapidly decreases with the increase of the enclosure slenderness.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: bioelectrochemical, direct interspecies electron transfer, electroactive bacteria, electrostatic field, nitrogen removal
The effect of electrostatic fields on the bioelectrochemical removal of ammonium and nitrite from nitrogen-rich wastewater was investigated at strengths ranging from 0.2 to 0.67 V/cm in bioelectrochemical anaerobic batch reactors. The electrostatic field enriched the bulk solution with electroactive bacteria, including ammonium oxidizing exoelectrogens (AOE) and denitritating electrotrophs (DNE). The electroactive bacteria removed ammonium and nitrite simultaneously with alkalinity consumption through biological direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) in the bulk solution. However, the total nitrogen (ammonium and nitrite) removal rate increased from 106.1 to 166.3 mg N/g volatile suspended solids (VSS).d as the electrostatic field strength increased from 0.2 to 0.67 V/cm. In the cyclic voltammogram, the redox peaks corresponding to the activities of AOE and DNE increased as the strength of the electrostatic field increased. Based on the microbial taxonomic profiling, the dominant... [more]

Keywords: CONOPT solver, metaheuristic methods, optimal location, power system losses, SVC devices, wind energy
In the current age, power systems contain many modern elements, one example being Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices, which play an important role in enhancing the static and dynamic performance of the systems. However, due to the high costs of FACTS devices, the location, type, and value of the reactive power of these devices must be optimized to maximize their resulting benefits. In this paper, the problem of optimal power flow for the minimization of power losses is considered for a power system with or without a FACTS controller, such as a Static Var Compensator (SVC) device The impact of location and SVC reactive power values on power system losses are considered in power systems with and without the presence of wind power. Furthermore, constant and variable load are considered. The mentioned investigation is realized on both IEEE 9 and IEEE 30 test bus systems. Optimal SVC allocation are performed in program GAMS using CONOPT solver. For constant load data, the obtai... [more]

Keywords: GP, LPs, mismatching loss, partial shading, power maximization, PV array
The analysis and the assessment of interconnected photovoltaic (PV) modules under different shading conditions and various shading patterns are presented in this paper. The partial shading conditions (PSCs) due to the various factors reduce the power output of PV arrays, and its characteristics have multiple peaks due to the mismatching losses between PV panels. The principal objective of this paper is to model, analyze, simulate and evaluate the performance of PV array topologies such as series-parallel (SP), honey-comb (HC), total-cross-tied (TCT), ladder (LD) and bridge-linked (BL) under different shading patterns to produce the maximum power by reducing the mismatching losses (MLs). Along with the conventional PV array topologies, this paper also discusses the hybrid PV array topologies such as bridge-linked honey-comb (BLHC), bridge-linked total-cross-tied (BLTCT) and series-parallel total-cross-tied (SPTCT). The performance analysis of the traditional PV array topologies along wi... [more]

Keywords: argillaceous weakly cemented rock, dynamic loading, Hopkinson experiment, reorganization structure
To study the mechanical properties of argillaceous weakly cemented rock under dynamic loading, a sample reconstituted and graded loading scheme is firstly designed, and then the reorganization rock sample is used as the research object. Using a Hopkinson pressure bar test, the responses of an argillaceous weakly cemented rock mass under different reorganization loads and different impact velocities is studied, and changes in specimen shape after impact are also analyzed. The study found that with increased of the recombination load, the amplitude of the transmitted wave increases. With increasing impact velocity, the rate of the increase in the incident wave amplitude is much larger than that of the transmission wave amplitude. The dynamic stress−strain curve can be divided into a compaction stage, an approximate linear elastic stage, a microcrack growth stage and a strain softening stage. The larger the reorganization load is, the less obvious the compression stage of the stress−strai... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle (EV), fail operation, in-wheel motor, linear quadratic regulator (LQR), optimal torque distribution
To improve the trackability of in-wheel motor drive (IWMD) and wheel-individual steer electric vehicles (EVs) when steering actuators fail, the fail-operation control strategy was proposed to correct vehicles in a steering failure situation and avoid losing control of vehicle steering. A linear quadratic regulator (LQR) decides the additional yaw moment of the vehicle according to vehicle state errors. The tire force estimation module estimates the compensating resistance moment generated by the failed wheel according to the tire slip angle and the vertical tire force. By isolating the failed wheel, the optimal torque distribution (OTD) controller allocates the additional yaw moment and the compensating resistance moment to normal wheels to realize the fail-operation control of the IWMD vehicle. The control effect was verified through co-simulation of MATLAB/Simulink and Trucksim. Compared with the uncontrolled and direct torque allocation methods, the proposed OTD method reduces the l... Subject: Environment
Keywords: analogue planetary base, Energy Storage, extraterrestrial building physics, internal heat gain, occupational heat load
The Moon’s environmental conditions present limited opportunities for waste heat dissipation, so internal heat gains (IHG) are a key component of thermal balance in a lunar building. Despite the significant development in energy saving and energy storage technologies of the last thirty years, the issue of IHG in lunar buildings has not been readdressed since the early 1990s. This study is based on an inspection of internal heat sources conducted aboard LUNARES, the first European extraterrestrial analogue habitat. The equipment absent on LUNARES, but indispensable for an actual lunar base, was identified and accounted for, along with additional laboratory and maintenance equipment. Three main groups of internal heat sources were identified and studied in detail. Waste heat generated by electric devices was accounted for, along with occupational heat loads adjusted for lunar partial gravity conditions. Assuming a photovoltaic power source for the studied building, two alternative energy... [more]

Keywords: energy saving, finite time thermodynamics, heat exchanger optimization, modified binary Brayton cycle power plant, power output
A modified closed binary Brayton cycle model with variable isothermal pressure drop ratios is established by using finite time thermodynamics in this paper. A topping cycle, a bottoming cycle, two isothermal heating processes and variable-temperature reservoirs are included in the new model. The topping cycle is composed of a compressor, a regular combustion chamber, a converging combustion chamber, a turbine and a precooler. The bottoming cycle is composed of a compressor, an ordinary regenerator, an isothermal regenerator, a turbine and a precooler. The heat conductance distributions among the six heat exchangers are optimized with dimensionless power output as optimization objective. The results show that the double maximum dimensionless power output increases first and then tends to be unchanged while the inlet temperature ratios of the regular combustion chamber and the converging combustion chamber increase. There also exist optimal thermal capacitance rate matchings among the wo... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: capillary-porous materials, porous structure modelling, thermal conductivity
A method of determining the effective thermal conductivity of moist capillary-porous materials has been proposed, in which calculations are carried out while taking into account all components of the system (solid, liquid and gas) at once. The method makes it easy to take into account the way water is distributed in the pore space of the material, either as isolated inclusions (drops) or as a continuous component, depending on the moisture content of the material. In the analysis of heat transport in moist capillary-porous materials, the theory of generalized conductivity is used and the structure of moist material is modeled using an ordered geometric structure consisting of identical unit cells in the form of a cube. An equation is obtained for calculating the effective conductivity of capillary-porous materials with isolated and continuous liquid inclusions, with adiabatic and isothermal division of the unit cell. The proposed method is compared to the previously proposed method of... [more]

Keywords: building archetypes, building energy simulation, EnergyPlus, regression, urban scale
Building energy consumption accounts for 36% of the overall energy end use worldwide and is growing rapidly as developing countries continue to urbanize. Understanding the energy use at urban scale will lay the foundation for identification of energy efficiency opportunities to be deployed at speed. China has almost half of global new constructions and plays an important role in building suitability. However, an open source national building energy consumption database is not available in China. To provide data support for building energy consumptions, this paper used a simulation method to develop an urban building energy consumption database for a pilot city in Wuhan, China. First, residential, small, and large office building archetype energy models were created in EnergyPlus to represent typical building energy consumption in Wuhan. The baseline reference model simulation results were further validated using survey data from the literature. Second, stochastic simulations were condu... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed hierarchical strategy, dynamic economic dispatch, isolated AC/DC hybrid microgrid, two-layer consensus method
In this paper, a distributed hierarchical consensus algorithm is proposed to solve the economic dispatch (ED) problem for the isolated AC/DC hybrid microgrid. At first, the whole nodes of the AC/DC hybrid microgrid are divided into two parts, that is, the leadership layer nodes and the tracking layer nodes. The leadership layer nodes update the data through their own feedback elements, while the tracking layer nodes receive the information from the leadership layer nodes and update the data. After several iterations, the two different layer nodes obtain the same state, which realizes the dynamic active power balance of the whole AC/DC microgrid. Besides, the AC sub-grid and DC sub-grid can also realize the power balance by the proposed algorithm, and the energy storage units will absorb or release active power to meet the power demand in the respective section. In addition, the constraints of the nodes are also taken into account to guarantee that the power nodes in the AC/DC hybrid mi... [more]

Keywords: charging path, distribution network, electric vehicles charging navigation system, real-time electricity price, road transportation network
According to the current optimization problem of electric vehicle charging path planning, a charging path optimization strategy for electric vehicles is proposed, which is under the “traffic-price-distribution” mode. Moreover, this strategy builds an electric vehicle charging and navigation system on the basis of the road traffic network model, real-time electricity price model and distribution network model. Based on the Dijkstra shortest path algorithm and Monte Carlo time-space prediction method, it gets the optimal charging path navigation with the goal of minimizing the charging cost of electric vehicles. The simulation results in MATLAB and MATPOWER (MATLAB R2018a, MATPOWER3.1b2, PSERC, Cannell University) show that the electric vehicle charging path optimization strategy can solve the local traffic congestion problem better and improve the safety and stability of the distribution network because of the fully considering the convenience of electric vehicle charging.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diffusion algorithm, distributed control, distributed operation, frequency control
This paper proposes a distributed control of the microgrid (MG) system based on the diffusion algorithm. Unlike the existing decentralized strategy that focuses on the economic operation of the MG system, the proposed strategy performs secondary frequency regulation in addition to the optimization of the MG system. The hierarchical control technique is employed in this study, where the primary layer is responsible for power control and the secondary layer is responsible for the frequency control and economic operation of the MG system. A tested MG system with four distributed generations (DGs) is considered. Three types of communication topologies are evaluated in this study, which are line, ring, and full topologies. The proposed controller is compared to the conventional consensus controller to show the effectiveness of the proposed diffusion controller. Simulation results show that the proposed diffusion strategy improves the convergence speed of the distributed control, resulting i... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Biofuels, cookstoves, forest stocks, Honduras, low HDI countries, medium HDI countries, societal exergy analysis, wood stoves
Unsustainable consumption of biofuels contributes to deforestation and climate change, while household air pollution from burning solid biofuels in homes results in millions of premature deaths globally every year. Honduras, like many low and medium Human Development Index countries, depends on primary solid biofuels for more than 30% of its primary energy supply (as of 2013). We conducted a societal exergy analysis and developed a forest stock model for Honduras for 1971−2013 and used the results to model an energy transition from traditional wood stoves to either improved efficiency wood cookstoves or modern fuel cookstoves (using Electricity or Liquefied petroleum gas) over the period 2013−2050. The exergy analysis and forest model enabled quantification of the environmental tradeoffs between the improved efficiency and fuel switching scenarios. We find that the continued reliance on wood within both the existing and improved wood cookstove scenarios would exhaust forest stocks by 2... [more]

Keywords: local climate policy, local GHG emissions, multilevel governance, municipal authorities, municipal energy planning
The changes observed in a municipal or local energy system over a period of time is due a number of concurrent dynamics such as the local social and economic trends, higher-level policies (e.g., national), and the local policies. Thus, a thorough identification and characterization of the many factors of change is key for an adequate assessment of the effectiveness of policies adopted at the local level, as well as for future planning. Such thorough identification and characterization of the factors that are determinant for the evolution of the local energy system is the content of this paper. The identification is performed through a systematic literature review, followed by a synthesis process. The factors identified are grouped into the categories of local context, local socio-economic and cultural evolution, higher-level governance framework, and local climate change mitigation actions. They are represented through a set of measurable variables. The factors and respective variables... [more]

In the last century, the refrigerant R744 (carbon dioxide) has become an environmentally friendly solution in commercial refrigeration despite its particular issues related to the low critical temperature. The use of transcritical cycles in warm and hot countries reveals the necessity of adopting different configurations and technologies to improve this specific cycle. Among these, subcooling methods are well-known techniques to enhance the cooling capacity and the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of the cycle. In this work, an R600a dedicated mechanical subcooling system has been experimentally tested in an R744 transcritical system at different operating conditions. The results have been compared with those obtained using a suction-to-liquid heat exchanger (IHX) to determine the degree of improvement of the mechanical subcooling system. Using the experimental tests, a computational model has been developed and validated to predict the optimal subcooling degree and the cubic capacity... [more]

Keywords: building energy simulation, experimental validation, water flow glazing
The transparent materials used in building envelopes significantly contribute to heating and cooling loads of a building. The use of transparent materials requires to solve issues regarding heat gain, heat loss, and daylight. Water flow glazing (WFG), a disruptive technology, includes glazing as part of the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system. Water is transparent to visible wavelengths, but it captures most of the infrared solar radiation. As an alternative to fossil fuel-based HVAC systems, the absorbed energy can be transferred to the ground through borehole heat exchangers and dissipated as a means of free-cooling. Researchers of the Polytechnic University of Madrid have developed a software tool to calculate the energy balance while incorporating the dynamic properties of WFG. This article has studied the mathematical model of that tool and validated its ability to predict energy savings in buildings, taking spectral and thermal parameters of glazing catalogs,... [more]

Keywords: centralized coordination scheme, community energy systems, coordination strategy, decentralized coordination scheme, energy management, load service entity
The energy interaction among a load service entity and community energy systems in neighboring communities leads to a complex energy generation, storage, and transaction problem. A load service entity is formed by a local electricity generation system, storage system, and renewable energy resources, which can provide ancillary services to customers and the utility grid. This paper proposes two coordination schemes for the interaction of community-based energy systems and load service entities based on game-theoretic frameworks. The first one is a centralized coordination scheme with full cooperation, in which the load service entity and community energy systems jointly activate the local resources. The second one is set as a decentralized coordination scheme to obtain a relative balance of interests among the market participants in a Stackelberg framework. Two mathematical models are developed for the day-ahead decision-making of the above energy management schemes. The Shapley value m... [more]

Keywords: energy storage system, fault-tolerant photovoltaic inverter, islanding detection, power systems for renewable energy
The paper deals with design and control of a fault tolerant and reconfigurable photovoltaic converter integrating a Battery Energy Storage System as a standby backup energy resource. When a failure occurs, an appropriate control method makes the energy conversion system capable of operating in open-delta configuration in parallel with the grid as well as in islanded mode. In case network voltage is lacking due to heavy anomalies or maintenance reasons, the proposed control system is able to quickly disconnect the inverter from the grid while ensuring the energy continuity to the local load and the emergency fixtures by means of the integrated battery packs. In particular, the paper proposes a fast islanding detection method essential for the correct operation of the control system. This specific technique is based on the Hilbert transform of the voltage of the point of common coupling, and it identifies the utility lack in a period of time equal to half a grid cycle in the best case (i... Keywords: CO2 injection, CO2 sequestration, CO2 storage capacity, CO2/shale interaction, shale gas
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a developed technology to minimize CO2 emissions and reduce global climate change. Currently, shale gas formations are considered as a suitable target for CO2 sequestration projects predominantly due to their wide availability. Compared to conventional geological formations including saline aquifers and coal seams, depleted shale formations provide larger storage potential due to the high adsorption capacity of CO2 compared to methane in the shale formation. However, the injected CO2 causes possible geochemical interactions with the shale formation during storage applications and CO2 enhanced shale gas recovery (ESGR) processes. The CO2/shale interaction is a key factor for the efficiency of CO2 storage in shale formations, as it can significantly alter the shale properties. The formation of carbonic acid from CO2 dissolution is the main cause for the alterations in the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the shale, which in return affect... [more]
