Recovery Mechanisms for Cyclic (Huff-n-Puff) Gas Injection in Unconventional Reservoirs: A Quantitative Evaluation Using Numerical Simulation
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cyclic gas injection, EOR, huff-n-puff, numerical simulation, oil swelling, recovery mechanisms, unconventional, vaporization.
Unconventional reservoirs produce large volumes of oil; however, recovery factors are low. While enhanced oil recovery (EOR) with cyclic gas injection can increase recovery factors in unconventional reservoirs, the mechanisms responsible for additional recovery are not well understood. We examined cyclic gas injection recovery mechanisms in unconventional reservoirs including oil swelling, viscosity reduction, vaporization, and pressure support using a numerical flow model as functions of reservoir fluid gas−oil ratio (GOR), and we conducted a sensitivity analysis of the mechanisms to reservoir properties and injection conditions. All mechanisms studied contributed to the additional recovery, but their significance varied with GOR. Pressure support provides a small response for all fluid types. Vaporization plays a role for all fluids but is most important for gas condensate reservoirs. Oil swelling impacts low-GOR oils but diminishes for higher-GOR oil. Viscosity reduction plays a min... Modified Activated Graphene-Based Carbon Electrodes from Rice Husk for Supercapacitor Applications
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: activated rice husk, few-layer graphene, nickel hydroxide, supercapacitor electrode.
The renewable biomass material obtained from rice husk, a low-cost agricultural waste, was used as a precursor to synthesize a highly porous graphene-based carbon as electrode material for supercapacitors. Activated graphene-based carbon (AGC) was obtained by a two-step chemical procedure and exhibited a very high specific surface area (SSA) of 3292 m2 g−1. The surface morphology of the synthesized materials was studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM). Furthermore, the AGC was modified with nickel hydroxide Ni(OH)2 through a simple chemical precipitation method. It was found that the most significant increase in capacitance could be reached with Ni(OH)2 loadings of around 9 wt.%. The measured specific capacitance of the pure AGC supercapacitor electrodes was 236 F g−1, whereas electrodes from the material modified with 9 wt.% Ni(OH)2 showed a specific capacitance of up to 300 F g−1 at a current density of 50 mA g−1. The increase in specific capacitance ac... [more]

Modeling Wind-Turbine Power Curves: Effects of Environmental Temperature on Wind Energy Generation
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: artificial neural networks, electricity generation, global warming, power curve, wind turbine.
Global warming represents a serious challenge, which requires the adoption of renewable energy technologies worldwide. However, it can negatively affect the availability of renewable energy resources, such as wind, which are needed for electricity generation. In this context, there is an increasing need for more accurate evaluations of wind turbine power curves. A novel methodology to model the power curves of wind turbines, which combines the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) and Fuzzy logic rules, is proposed in this paper. This methodology assesses the role of environmental temperature in the power curve and the impact of temperature increases on wind energy production. The application of this methodology is illustrated with the simulation of the impact of global warming on the electricity generation of a wind farm. Due to the non-linear relationship between the power output of a turbine and its primary and derived parameters, it is shown that ANN combined with an expert syste... [more]

On the Influence of the Ammonium Nitrate(V) Provenance on Its Usefulness for the Manufacture of ANFO Type Explosives
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: ammonium nitrate (V), ANFO, morphology, TGA, thermal decomposition.
Ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) samples based on fertilizer (AN-F) and ammonium nitrate porous prill (AN-PP) were studied. Tests were carried out using both a thermogravimetric analyzer and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC). Furthermore, the scanning electron microscopy analysis (SEM) of ammonium nitrate(V) (AN) concerning either their surface or cross-section was performed. Based on the SEM results, it was shown that the surface of AN-F grains was flat and slightly deformed, while the AN-PP surface was wrinkled and deformed. Furthermore, the various steps of thermogravimetric process exhibited continuous AN phase transition according to precise temperatures. From TGA analysis, a significant mass loss was found as a result of ANFO decomposition. Direct comparison of SEM and TGA/DCS data led to the conclusion that ANFO based on AN-F was characterized by lower absorption of FO in contrast to AN-PP.

A Discussion of Possible Approaches to the Integration of Thermochemical Storage Systems in Concentrating Solar Power Plants
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbonates calcination, concentrated solar power plants, concentrated solar thermal plants, oxides carbonation, oxides decomposition, storage integration, thermochemical storage.
One of the most interesting perspectives for the development of concentrated solar power (CSP) is the storage of solar energy on a seasonal basis, intending to exploit the summer solar radiation in excess and use it in the winter months, thus stabilizing the yearly production and increasing the capacity factor of the plant. By using materials subject to reversible chemical reactions, and thus storing the thermal energy in the form of chemical energy, thermochemical storage systems can potentially serve to this purpose. The present work focuses on the identification of possible integration solutions between CSP plants and thermochemical systems for long-term energy storage, particularly for high-temperature systems such as central receiver plants. The analysis is restricted to storage systems potentially compatible with temperatures ranging from 700 to 1000 °C and using gases as heat transfer fluids. On the basis of the solar plant specifications, suitable reactive systems are identifie... [more]

New Sensorless Speed Control of a Hybrid Stepper Motor Based on Fuzzy Sliding Mode Observer
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fuzzy control, sensorless speed control, sliding mode observer, stepper motor.
Stepper motors are widely used in industrial and consumer applications due to low-cost, high reliability, and open-loop control capability. Though open-loop features a simple structure, it bears low step resolution, high torque ripple, and low energy efficiency. To improve the performance without increasing hardware cost, a fuzzy sliding mode observer (SMO)-based new sensorless speed control structure is proposed. Unlike the conventional sensorless speed control, it does not use Park and inverse Park transformations to transform currents between a-b and d-q coordinates. Instead, it uses a new current transformation method to generate reference currents of stator windings, which not only reduces the calculation burden of the controller, but also improves the stability of the system. To reduce the chattering, a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) embedded into the SMO is designed to adjust the observer gain adaptively, without using the conventional method that replaces the discontinuous sign f... Gini and Entropy-Based Spread Indexes for Primary Energy Consumption Efficiency and CO2 Emission
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon emissions, Coal, energy consumption, fossil fuels, generalized entropy index, Gini index, Natural Gas, non-fossil fuels, Petroleum, technology efficiency.
Primary energy consumption is one of the key drivers of global CO2 emissions that, in turn, heavily depends on the efficiency of involved technologies. Either improvement in technology efficiency or the expansion of non-fossil fuel consumption requires large investments. The planning and financing of such investments by global policy makers or global energy firms require, in turn, reliable measures of associated global spread and their evolution in time, at least from the point of view of the principles for responsible investment (PRI). In this paper, our main contribution is the introduction of index measures for accessing global spread (that is, measures of inequality or inhomogeneity in the statistical distribution of a related quantity of interest) of technology efficiency and CO2 emission in primary energy consumption. These indexes are based on the Gini index, as used in economical sciences, and generalized entropy measures. Regarding primary energy sources, we consider petroleum... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon conversion, clean coal technology, gasifying agent, HNCERI, two-stage entrained-flow gasifier.
In this paper, coal gasification characteristics in the reductor were investigated in a full-scale two-stage pressurized entrained-flow gasifier, which has been seldom conducted previously. The present study aimed at elucidating the effects of gasifying agent concentration, coal input rate, and operation period under full reductor load on the performance of a utility two-stage pressurized entrained-flow gasifier for the first time. When the steam input in the combustor was raised from 3318 kg/h to 5722 kg/h, the total outputs of H2, CO, and CO2 were increased by 1765 Nm3/h and 2063 Nm3/h, respectively, while the CH4 output was decreased by 49 Nm3/h. The coal conversion rate was minimal at low steam input. In addition, more coal gasified in the reductor could increase the output of CH4, while CH4 could reach 1.24% with the coal input in the range of 8000−10,000 kg/h. The present work can offer a further understanding of the gasification performance in the reductor of the full-scale two-... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: BIPV, model parameter calibration, Particle Swarm Optimization, TRNSYS.
Installing renewable energy systems for zero-energy buildings has become increasingly common; building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems, which integrate PV modules into the building envelope, are being widely selected as renewable systems. In particular, owing to the rapid growth of information and communication technology, the requirement for appropriate operation and control of energy systems has become an important issue. To meet these requirements, a computational model is essential; however, some unmeasurable parameters can result in inaccurate results. This work proposes a calibration method for unknown parameters of a well-known BIPV model based on in situ test data measured over eight days; this parameter calibration was conducted via an optimization algorithm. The unknown parameters were set such that the results obtained from the BIPV simulation model are similar to the in situ measurement data. Transitioning All Energy in 74 Metropolitan Areas, Including 30 Megacities, to 100% Clean and Renewable Wind, Water, and Sunlight (WWS)
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: climate change, megacities, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar, urban air pollution, Wind.
To date, roadmaps and policies for transitioning from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy have been developed for nations, provinces, states, cities, and towns in order to address air pollution, global warming, and energy insecurity. However, neither roadmaps nor policies have been developed for large metropolitan areas (aggregations of towns and cities), including megacities (metropolitan areas with populations above 10 million). This study bridges that gap by developing roadmaps to transition 74 metropolitan areas worldwide, including 30 megacities, to 100% wind, water, and sunlight (WWS) energy and storage for all energy sectors by no later than 2050, with at least 80% by 2030. Among all metropolitan areas examined, the full transition may reduce 2050 annual energy costs by 61.1% (from $2.2 to $0.86 trillion/yr in 2013 USD) and social costs (energy plus air pollution plus climate costs) by 89.6% (from $8.3 to $0.86 trillion/yr). As the integration of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems on modern power networks continues to expand, challenges have appeared in different fields of the network architecture. In the Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) field, software and toolboxes are expected to be modified to meet the new network characteristics. Therefore, this paper presents a unified Weighted Least Squares (WLS) state estimation algorithm suitable for hybrid HVDC/AC transmission systems, based on Voltage Source Converter (VSC). The mathematical formulas of the unified approach are derived for modelling the AC, DC and converter coupling components. The method couples the AC and DC sides of the converter through power and voltage constraints and measurement functions. Two hybrid power system test cases have been studied to validate this work, a 4-AC/4-DC/4-AC network and Cigre B4 DC test case network. April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy saving, metro train, Model Predictive Control, online, switched-mode dynamical systems.
With the rapid development of urban rail transit systems and the consequent sharp increase of energy consumption, the energy-saving train operation problem has been attracting much attention. Extensive studies have been devoted to optimal control of a single metro train in an inter-station run to minimize the energy consumption. However, most of the existing work focuses on offline optimization of the energy-saving driving strategy, which still needs to be tracked in real train operation. In order to attain better performance in the presence of disturbances, this paper studies the online optimization problem of the energy-saving driving strategy for a single metro train, by employing the model predictive control (MPC) approach. Firstly, a switched-mode dynamical system model is introduced to describe the dynamics of a metro train. Based on this model, an MPC-based online optimization problem is formulated for obtaining the optimal mode switching times with minimal energy consumption fo... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion, emission, knock, temperature, water injection.
A turbocharged downsizing spark ignition (SI) engine cooperating with an in-cylinder direct injection technology is one of the most effective ways to improve the power and economy of gasoline engines. However, engine knock has limited the application and development of the downsizing of gasoline engines. Water injection technology can effectively suppress the knock. In this study, a method of numerical simulation was used to explore the effect of the water injection temperature on the combustion and suppression of the knock. First of all, the knock of the gasoline engine was induced by advancing the spark timing. Then, when the other conditions were the same, different water injection temperatures were set. The results show that lowering the water injection temperature reduced the knock intensity in the cylinder, but increasing the water injection temperature made the water distribution more uniform, and the peak values of each monitoring point were more consistent. Keywords: economic assessment, emission rights sales mechanism, energy security, near-zero emission technologies, oxy-fuel combustion cycles, power market.
The paper analyzes the main issues of power market development for clean energy production within the broader framework of ensuring the country’s energy security. In addition, special attention is paid to the technologies aimed at reducing emissions of toxic substances and greenhouse gases by the fossil-fired power plants. Even though the future electricity markets would most likely depend on the high shares of renewable energy sources (RES) in the electricity system, energy efficiency such as the one based on the near-zero emission technologies might also play a crucial role in the transition to the carbon-free energy future. In particular, there are the oxy-fuel combustion technologies that might help to reduce the proportion of unburned fuel and increase the efficiency of the power plant while reducing the emissions of flue gases. Our paper focuses on the role and the place of the near-zero emission technologies in the production of clean energy. We applied economic and mathematical... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: cyber-physical network, fault indicator, LoRa, NB-IoT, optimal placement.
Traditional fault indicators based on 3G and 4G cannot send out fault-generated information if the distribution lines are located in the system across remote mountainous or forest areas. Hence, power distribution systems in rural areas only rely on patrol to find faults currently, which wastes time and lacks efficiency. With the development of the Internet of things (IoT) technology, some studies have suggested combining the long-range (LoRa) and the narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) technologies to increase the data transmission distance and reduce the self-built communication system operating cost. In this paper, we propose an optimal configuration scheme for novel intelligent IoT-based fault indicators. The proposed fault indicator combines LoRa and NB-IoT communication technologies with a long communication distance to achieve minimum power consumption and high-efficiency maintenance. Keywords: adsorption–desorption, coalbed methane, gas diffusion, Lattice Boltzmann method, pore-scale.
The diffusion−adsorption behavior of methane in coal is an important factor that both affecting the decay rate of gas production and the total gas production capacity. In this paper, we established a pore-scale Lattice Boltzmann (LB) model coupled with fluid flow, gas diffusion, and gas adsorption−desorption in the bi-dispersed porous media of coalbed methane. Then, three dimensionless numbers, Re, Pe, and Da, were adopted to discuss the impact of fluid velocity, gas diffusivity, and adsorption/desorption rate on the gas flow−diffusion−adsorption process. The effect of the gas adsorption layer in micropores on the diffusion−adsorption−desorption process was considered, and a Langmuir isotherm adsorption theory-based method was developed to obtain the dynamic diffusion coefficient, which can capture the intermediate process... Keywords: commutation failure, dynamic reactive power, loss of excitation, synchronous condenser, UHVDC.
The synchronous condenser (SC) has a broad application prospect in ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) systems. The SC’s loss of excitation (LOE) is an important grid-related fault that may cause damage to the UHVDC. However, as the premise of the scientific protection configuration, knowledge of the SC’s LOE feature and its impact on UHVDC is still missing. This article first analyzes the SC’s LOE feature, offering a basic cognition of this fault. Secondly, the LOE SC’s reactive power response to system voltage variation is studied in the single-machine infinite-bus system. This lends a foundation for transient UHVDC research. Finally, the LOE SC’s impacts on steady and transient UHVDC are evaluated, respectively, considering different AC strengths and system faults through PSCAD/EMTDC (V4.6, Manitoba HVDC Research Center, Winnipeg, MB, Canada) simulations. Keywords: Borehole Heat Exchangers (BHE), cost saving, EED, hydraulic assessment, optimization assessment, pressure losses, shallow geothermal energy, Thermal Response Test (TRT).
In ground-source heat-pump systems, the heat exchange rate is influenced by various design and operational parameters that condition the thermal performance of the heat pump and the running costs during exploitation. One less-studied area is the relationship between the pumping costs in a given system and the heat exchange rate. This work analyzes the investment and operating costs of representative borehole heat-exchanger configurations with varying circulating flow rate by means of a combination of analytical formulas and case study simulations to allow a precise quantification of the capital and operational costs in typical scenario. As a conclusion, an optimal flow rate minimizing either of both costs can be determined. Furthermore, it is concluded that in terms of operating costs, there is an operational pumping rate above which performance of geothermal systems is energetically strongly penalized.

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: bioeconomy, emulsion breakdown, process management, techno-economic assessment.
Production of food-grade emulsions is continuously rising globally, especially in developing countries. The steepest demand growth is in the segment of inexpensive meat products where edible emulsions serve as lubricants to mitigate economic loses linked with mechanical damage during automated processing of artificial casings. Provided that production goal is to minimize emulsion transfer into the product, its vast majority becomes voluminous greasy and sticky waste. Public sewage treatment plants cannot process such waste, its cleaning processes tends to collapse under loads of emulsions. To make matters worse, composition of emulsions often changes (according to actual pricing of main components) and emulsion manufacturers carefully guard their recipes. Therefore, running of in-house sewage plants would require continuous experimentation linked with need for skilled personnel, frequent changes in technology setup and high operating costs in general. Integration of a Multi-Stack Fuel Cell System in Microgrids: A Solution Based on Model Predictive Control
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: microgrid, Model Predictive Control, multi-objective, multi-stack, PEM fuel cell.
This paper proposes a multi-objective model predictive control (MPC) designed for the power management of a multi-stack fuel cell (FC) system integrated into a renewable sources-based microgrid. The main advantage of MPC is the fact that it allows the current timeslot to be optimized while taking future timeslots into account. The multi-objective function solves the problem related to the power dispatch at time that includes criteria to reduce the multi-stack FC degradation, operating and maintenance costs, as well as hydrogen consumption. Regarding the scientific literature, the novelty of this paper lies in the proposal of a generalized MPC controller for a multi-stack FC that can be used independently of the number of stacks that make it up. Although all the stacks that make up the modular FC system are identical, their levels of degradation, in general, will not be. Thus, over time, each stack can present a different behavior. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Aspen HYSYS, associated petroleum gas, binary cycle, combined heat and power, GTL, MATLAB Simulink, petroleum production, synthetic liquid hydrocarbons.
This paper considers the issue of associated petroleum gas utilization during hydrocarbon production in remote petroleum fields. Due to the depletion of conventional oil and gas deposits around the globe, production shifts to hard-to-recover resources, such as heavy and high-viscosity oil that requires a greater amount of energy to be recovered. At the same time, large quantities of associated petroleum gas are extracted along with the oil. The gas can be utilized as a fuel for power generation. However, even the application of combined power modes (combined heat and power and combined cooling heat and power) cannot guarantee full utilization of the associated petroleum gas. Analysis of the electrical and heat loads’ graphs of several oil fields revealed that the generated thermal energy could not always be fully used. To improve the efficiency of the fuel’s energy potential conversion, an energy system with a binary power generation cycle was developed, consisting of two power install... [more]

Keywords: curtailment, high-voltage, long-term planning, multi-year, network expansion planning, power system planning, time series.
Integrating active power curtailment (APC) of renewable energy sources (RES) in power system planning reduces necessary investments in the power system infrastructure. In current target grid planning methods, APC is considered by fixed curtailment factors without considering the provided flexibility to its full extent. Time-series-based planning methods allow the integration of the time dependency of RES and loads in power system planning, leading to substantial cost savings compared to the worst-case method. In this paper, we present a multi-year planning strategy for high-voltage power system planning, considering APC as an alternative investment option to conventional planning measures. A decomposed approach is chosen to consider APC and conventional measures in a long-term planning horizon of several years.
