April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: activated carbon, hydrocracking, hydrotreating, mesoporous alumina, NiMo catalysts, SBA-15, vacuum residue.
The effect of different supports such as silica (SBA-15), activated carbon (AC), and mesoporous alumina (Al2O3) on catalytic activities of hydrotreating nickel molybdenum (NiMo) catalysts was demonstrated for upgrading vacuum residue. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis showed that SBA-15 and the AC-supported NiMo catalyst possessed a very high surface area compared to the alumina-supported catalyst. However, NiMo/Al2O3 catalyst possesses a higher pore diameter and pore volume with an appropriate surface area. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that active metals were dispersed in the catalytic supports. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed the presence of type II active MoS2 sites in the NiMo/Al2O3 catalyst, which showed weak metal-support interactions having a high intrinsic activity. Catalyst activities such as hydrodesulfurization (HDS), hydrodemetallization (HDM) and asphaltene conversion (HDAs), and hydrocracking conversions of a vacuum residue were e... [more]
Fault Diagnosis of Traction Transformer Based on Bayesian Network
Yong Xiao, Weiguo Pan, Xiaomin Guo, Sheng Bi, Ding Feng, Sheng Lin.
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: association rules, Bayesian network, conditional probability, fault diagnosis, traction transformer.
As the core equipment of a traction power supply system, the traction transformer is very important to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the system. At present, the three-ratio method is mainly used to distinguish transformer faults, whereas such a method has some defects, such as insufficient coding and over-general fault classification. At the same time, on-site maintenance personnel make an empirical judgment based on various test data, which is subjective and uncertain to a certain extent. For cases with multiple abnormal data and relatively complex conditions, on-site personnel often need to discuss and even dismantle the transformer to identify the fault, which is time-consuming and costly. In order to improve the effect of fault diagnosis for traction transformer, this paper uses Bayesian network to correlate the cause and effect of various tests and faults. By combining the results of field tests, the fault is diagnosed by the causal probability of the Bayesian network,... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hybrid prediction model, long short-term memory, scenario analysis, wavelet decomposition, wind power generation.
Wind power generation is one of the renewable energy generation methods which maintains good momentum of development at present. However, its extremely intense intermittences and uncertainties bring great challenges to wind power integration and the stable operation of wind power grids. To achieve accurate prediction of wind power generation in China, a hybrid prediction model based on the combination of Wavelet Decomposition (WD) and Long Short-Term Memory neural network (LSTM) is constructed. Firstly, the nonstationary time series is decomposed into multidimensional components by WD, which can effectively reduce the volatility of the original time series and make them more stable and predictable. Then, the components of the original time series after WD are used as input variables of LSTM to predict the national wind power generation. Forty points were used, 80% as training samples and 20% as testing samples. The experimental results show that the MAPE of WD-LSTM is 5.831, performing... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: economic analysis, energy storage management, iterative auction algorithm, microgrid, peer-to-peer (P2P), renewable energy trading.
In this paper, a peer-to-peer (P2P) renewable energy trading mechanism for microgrids when energy suppliers are equipped with storage devices is studied. A dynamic energy storage management strategy based on the local trading price is proposed and each supplier decides the amount of energy to be sold and stored in real time. An iterative auction algorithm is presented to obtain the market equilibrium and optimal energy allocation schedule. The economic analysis of introducing energy storage devices in this trading market is further studied. Numerical examples of two 7 × 24-h energy trading scenarios with 20 consumers and 20 solar energy producers are used to illustrate the feasibility of this proposed trading mechanism, with sensitivity analysis of different parameters on social welfare. A comparison of the hourly optimal local trading price of these two markets is demonstrated to explain the dynamic process. It is found that in those days with high solar radiation, compared with the m... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: deep renovation, exhaust air heat pump, field test, heat recovery system, housing, indoor air quality, supply air window, trickle vent.
This article presents a field test of how deep renovation affects indoor climate quality. The studied apartment building was built in 1968 and is located in Finland, within the Nordic climate zone. The deep renovation included façade repair with extra insulation, new windows with trickle vents, new balcony glass and doors, and the installation of an exhaust air heat pump into the existing mechanical exhaust air ventilation. The indoor climate conditions and building envelope tightness were measured before and after the renovation. As a result of these energy renovation measures, the building envelope tightness improved by nearly 40% and the uncontrolled supply of air (draughts) decreased by approximately 24%. The overall energy consumption of the building decreased by 45%. Above all, the long testing period gives credibility to the study. The field test brought up the challenge of supplying an adequate amount of fresh air. This article highlights the fact that windows are part of a mec... [more]

Keywords: citizen engagement, electricity mix, equity, participatory planning, public preferences, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, serious games, spatial planning.
Energy transitions around the world will change the spatial fingerprint of the electricity sector, but there is a lack of studies on citizen preferences for siting the future mix of electricity technologies. Using the case of Switzerland in 2035, we present a serious board game to form and elicit citizen preferences for spatial siting of a full mix of electricity technologies and we test this game with 44 participants in the city of Zurich. The game proves to help elicit valid preferences of the participants and lead to measurable learning effects about this complex, multi-dimensional topic. The results show that these 44 participants prefer a diverse mix of renewable technologies for Switzerland in 2035. In terms of siting, these participants consistently choose the efficiency strategy, where new plants are concentrated in the areas where they produce most electricity at least cost, in contrast to the strategy of regional equity, where all Swiss regions would equally build new generat... Keywords: discrete Fourier transform, harmonic distortion, mineral oil, non-uniform electric field, partial discharge.
In high-voltage equipment, it is vital to detect any failure in advance. To do this, a determination of the partial discharges occurring at different voltage types as well as at different electrode configurations is essential for observing the oil condition. In this study, an experimental setup consisting of a needle−semi-sphere electrode configuration immersed in mineral oil is prepared for laboratory experiment. In such a way, a non-uniform electric field is created and the leakage currents are monitored from the grounded electrode. A total of six different electrode configurations are analyzed during the tests by the use of hemispheres of different diameters as grounded electrodes and copper and steel pointed (medical) needle high-voltage electrodes. In the experiments, the partial discharges occurring at four different voltage levels between 5.4 and 10.8 kV are measured and recorded. The effect of the different electrode configurations and voltage levels on the harmonic distortion... [more]

Keywords: air-to-air rotary heat exchanger, building energy efficiency, energy consumption, ventilation system.
Reducing energy usage to save the environment is one of the main goals for the future. The energy losses in ventilation have a huge impact on energy consumption in buildings. In this work, the energy performance of a heat recovery wheel system equipped in an air handling unit was tested year-round, and the results compared with the simulation output for the system using TRNSYS software. The selected conditioned space was the staff offices of an H&M fashion shop, located in Eger, Hungary. Temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity sensors were placed at the wheel inlet and outlet sections to record data and determine the annual energy saving. The results revealed a good agreement between the measured and simulated results.

Keywords: direct solar absorption, hybrid nanofluid, photo thermal performance, solar energy.
The solar absorption efficiency of water as a base-fluid can be significantly improved by suspending nanoparticles of various materials in it. This experimental work presents the photo thermal performance of water-based nano-fluids of graphene oxide (GO), zinc oxide (ZnO), copper oxide (CuO), and their hybrids under natural solar flux for the first time. Nanofluid samples were prepared by the two-step method and the photothermal performance of these nanofluid samples was conducted under natural solar flux in a particle concentration range from 0.0004 wt % to 0.0012 wt %. The photothermal efficiency of water-based 0.0012 wt % GO nanofluid was 46.6% greater than that of the other nanofluids used. This increased photothermal performance of GO nanofluid was associated with its good stability, high absorptivity, and high thermal conductivity. Thus, pure graphene oxide (GO) based nanofluid is a potential candidate for direct absorption solar collection to be used in different solar thermal e... [more]

Keywords: building energy code, energy conservation measure, energy saving ratio, investment cost.
Building energy codes are key policy tools for improving building energy efficiency by defining the minimum requirement for the energy performance of new buildings. In Korea, the building energy code was focused on prescriptive criteria for a long time but is now gradually introducing performance criteria. However, switching to performance criteria is not straightforward because of the resistance of the market to abandoning the well-consolidated prescriptive criteria. The objective of this study is to derive appropriate measures to strengthen the prescriptive criteria and the performance criteria, considering both the energy-saving effect and the economic efficiency for new office buildings and educational buildings to increase the market acceptance of the building energy codes. To this end, the energy-saving effects of reference buildings resulting from the reinforcement of the prescriptive criteria in the past have been first analyzed. Then, based on the collected energy performance... [more]

Keywords: contingency analysis, integrated natural gas and electricity transmission networks, N-1 criteria, separated and integrated methods.
The interaction between natural gas and electricity networks is becoming more significant due to the projected large penetration of renewables into the energy system to meet the emission targets. This is due to the role of gas-fired plants in providing backup to renewables as the linkage between these networks. Therefore, this paper proposes a deterministic coordinated model for the secure and optimal operation of integrated natural gas and electricity transmission networks by taking into account the N-1 contingency analysis on both networks. In order to reduce the computational burden and time, an iterative algorithm is proposed to select the critical cases and neglect other contingencies, which do not have a significant impact on the energy system. The proposed integrated mixed-integer nonlinear programming operational model is evaluated and compared to another enhanced separated model on the IEEE 24-bus and 15-node gas test systems. The results emphasize the importance and effective... [more]

Keywords: coal coking, coal pyrolysis, heat effect of pyrolysis, kinetics of pyrolysis, pyrolytic reactions.
A series of experimental coal pyrolysis studies were conducted to define the parameters of a kinetic model to enable complete mass and energy balances by identifying basic process products. The developed model determines the chemical enthalpy of pyrolytic reactions, making it possible to determine the share of exothermic conversions in the coking process. To validate the model, a series of experimental pyrolysis tests of coking coals used in the coke plant and their blends were conducted, including TGA, retort, and industrial coke oven scale. Despite significant differences in the chemical composition of various coal types, element balancing allowed detection of the difference in product composition and the heat effects of the chemical conversion of such a complex substance as coal. Analysis of the heat effects of pyrolytic coal decomposition indicates substantial variability. In the first coking period, there are endothermic reactions; in the second, exothermic reactions occur. On Simplified Calculations of Leakage Inductances of Power Transformers
Tadeusz Sobczyk, Marcin Jaraczewski.
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 1D stray field analysis, discrete differential operator, energy-based approach, multi-winding transformers, self- and mutual leakage inductances.
This paper deals with the problem of the leakage inductance calculations in power transformers. Commonly, the leakage flux in the air zone is represented by short-circuit inductance, which determines the short-circuit voltage, which is a very important factor for power transformers. That inductance is a good representation of the typical power transformer windings, but it is insufficient for multi-winding ones. This paper presents simple formulae for self- and mutual leakage inductance calculations for an arbitrary pair of windings. It follows from a simple 1D approach to analyzing the stray field using a discrete differential operator, and it was verified by the finite element method (FEM) calculation results.

The transformation of the energy system is a highly complex process involving many dimensions. Energy system models help to understand the process and to define either target systems or policy measures. Insights derived from the social sciences are not sufficiently represented in energy system models, but address crucial aspects of the transformation process. It is, therefore, necessary to develop approaches to integrate results from social science studies into energy system models. Hence, as a result of an interdisciplinary discourse among energy system modellers, social scientists, psychologists, economists and political scientists, this article explains which aspects should be considered in the models, how the respective results can be collected and which aspects of integration into energy system models are conceivable to provide an overview for other modellers. As a result of the discourse, five facets are examined: Investment behaviour (market acceptance), user behaviour, local ac... [more]

Keywords: cross feedback output current sharing, input-series input-parallel output-series output-parallel multimodule converter, reflex charging, ultra-fast chargers.
To increase the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), significant efforts in terms of reducing the charging time are required. Consequently, ultrafast charging (UFC) stations require extensive investigation, particularly considering their higher power level requirements. Accordingly, this paper introduces a hybrid multimodule DC-DC converter-based dual-active bridge (DAB) topology for EV-UFC to achieve high-efficiency and high-power density. The hybrid concept is achieved through employing two different groups of multimodule converters. The first is designed to be in charge of a high fraction of the total required power, operating at a relatively low switching frequency, while the second is designed for a small fraction of the total power, operating at a relatively high switching frequency. To support the power converter controller design, a generalized small-signal model for the hybrid converter is studied. Also, cross feedback output current sharing (CFOCS) control for the hybrid inpu... [more]
An Air Terminal Device with a Changing Geometry to Improve Indoor Air Quality for VAV Ventilation Systems

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air terminal device geometry, indoor air quality, VAV ventilation systems.
This study aimed to develop a new concept for an air terminal device for a VAV (variable air volume) ventilation system that would improve overall ventilation efficiency under a varying air supply volume. In VAV systems, air volume is modified according to the thermal load in each ventilated zone. However, lowering the airflow may cause a lack of proper air distribution and lead to the degradation of hygienic conditions. To combat this phenomenon, an air terminal device with an adapting geometry to stabilize the air throw, such that it remains constant despite the changing air volume supplied through the ventilation system, was designed and studied. Simulations that were performed using the RNG k−ε model in the ANSYS Fluent application were later validated on a laboratory stand. The results of the study show that, when using the newly proposed terminal device with an adaptive geometry, it is possible to stabilize the air throw. The thermal comfort parameters such as the PMV (predicted... [more]

Keywords: automated guided vehicles, battery management, energy optimization, job-shop scheduling, transport constraints.
The industry 4.0 concepts are moving towards flexible and energy efficient factories. Major flexible production lines use battery-based automated guided vehicles (AGVs) to optimize their handling processes. However, optimal AGV battery management can significantly shorten lead times. In this paper, we address the scheduling problem in an AGV-based job-shop manufacturing facility. The considered schedule concerns three strands: jobs affecting machines, product transport tasks’ allocations and AGV fleet battery management. The proposed model supports outcomes expected from Industry 4.0 by increasing productivity through completion time minimization and optimizing energy by managing battery replenishment. Experimental tests were conducted on extended benchmark literature instances to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed approach.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery capacity, hybrid wind-photovoltaic system, optimization model, probabilistic approach.
In the present study, a novel probabilistic approach is proposed to optimize a stand-alone hybrid wind-photovoltaic renewable energy system installed in the South China Sea. In detail, the probability distribution of power generated from a hybrid wind-photovoltaic system is estimated based on the probabilistic descriptions of wind and solar energy resources in the South China Sea. In addition, the present study proposed a battery level coefficient model to calculate the battery capacity of the hybrid system. As the battery level coefficient implies the expected power deficit in a specific continuous duration, it reflects the reliability of the battery system and, hence, the performance of the system under the power deficit condition. Given the probabilistic models estimated the stability of power generations, a genetic algorithm is applied to optimize the sizes of the system components (the installed capacities of wind turbines and photovoltaic modules and the load) when the levelized... Keywords: artificial neural network (ANN), indirect field-oriented control (IFOC), rotor resistance estimation, sensorless control, stator resistance estimation.
This paper presents a new approach method for online rotor and stator resistance estimation of induction motors using artificial neural networks for the sensorless drive. In this method, the rotor resistance is estimated by a feed-forward neural network with the learning rate as a function. The stator resistance is also estimated using the two-layered neural network with learning rate as a function. The speed of the induction motor is also estimated by the neural network. Therefore, the accurate estimation of the rotor and stator resistance improved the quality of the sensorless induction motor drive. The results of simulation and experiment show that the estimated speed tracks the real speed of the induction motor; simultaneously, the error between the estimated rotor and stator resistance using neural network and the normal rotor and stator resistance is very small.
Recovery Mechanisms for Cyclic (Huff-n-Puff) Gas Injection in Unconventional Reservoirs: A Quantitative Evaluation Using Numerical Simulation

Keywords: cyclic gas injection, EOR, huff-n-puff, numerical simulation, oil swelling, recovery mechanisms, unconventional, vaporization.
Unconventional reservoirs produce large volumes of oil; however, recovery factors are low. While enhanced oil recovery (EOR) with cyclic gas injection can increase recovery factors in unconventional reservoirs, the mechanisms responsible for additional recovery are not well understood. We examined cyclic gas injection recovery mechanisms in unconventional reservoirs including oil swelling, viscosity reduction, vaporization, and pressure support using a numerical flow model as functions of reservoir fluid gas−oil ratio (GOR), and we conducted a sensitivity analysis of the mechanisms to reservoir properties and injection conditions. All mechanisms studied contributed to the additional recovery, but their significance varied with GOR. Pressure support provides a small response for all fluid types. Vaporization plays a role for all fluids but is most important for gas condensate reservoirs. Oil swelling impacts low-GOR oils but diminishes for higher-GOR oil. Viscosity reduction plays a min... The renewable biomass material obtained from rice husk, a low-cost agricultural waste, was used as a precursor to synthesize a highly porous graphene-based carbon as electrode material for supercapacitors. Activated graphene-based carbon (AGC) was obtained by a two-step chemical procedure and exhibited a very high specific surface area (SSA) of 3292 m2 g−1. The surface morphology of the synthesized materials was studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM). Furthermore, the AGC was modified with nickel hydroxide Ni(OH)2 through a simple chemical precipitation method. It was found that the most significant increase in capacitance could be reached with Ni(OH)2 loadings of around 9 wt.%. The measured specific capacitance of the pure AGC supercapacitor electrodes was 236 F g−1, whereas electrodes from the material modified with 9 wt.% Ni(OH)2 showed a specific capacitance of up to 300 F g−1 at a current density of 50 mA g−1.
