April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep coal mine, emergency braking, heavy load, high speed, tribo-brake.
The friction wear and thermal fatigue cracking of the brake shoe and friction-induced self-excited vibration (frictional flutter) of the disc brake can easily occur during emergency braking of a deep coal mine hoist with at high speed and with a heavy load. Therefore, tribo-brake characteristics between the brake disc and brake shoe during emergency braking of a deep coal mine hoist are investigated in the present study. Scaled parameters of the disc brake of a deep coal mine hoist are determined by employing the similarity principle. Friction tests between friction disc and brake shoe are carried out to obtain the coefficient of friction in the case of high speed and large specific pressure between the friction disc and brake shoe. Coupled thermo-mechanical finite element analyses of the brake disc and brake shoe are established to investigate temperature and stress fields of the brake disc and brake shoe during emergency braking, which is validated by the engineering failure case. Subject: Other
Keywords: conventional sliding mode controller, damped passive filter, direct matrix converter, permanent magnet synchronous motor, second order sliding mode controller, space vector modulation, stator current orientation control.
The main objective of this work revolves around the design of second order sliding mode controllers (SOSMC) based on the super twisting algorithm (STA) for asynchronous permanent magnet motor (PMSM) fed by a direct matrix converter (DMC), in order to improve the effectiveness of the considered drive system. The SOSMC was selected to minimize the chattering phenomenon caused by the conventional sliding mode controller (SMC), as well to decrease the level of total harmonic distortion (THD) produced by the drive system. In addition, the literature has taken a great interest in the STA due to its robustness to modeling errors and to external disturbances. Furthermore, due to its low conduction losses, the space vector approach was designated as a switching law to control the DMC. In addition, the topology and design method of the damped passive filter, which allows improvement of the waveform and attenuation of the harmonics of the input current, have been detailed. Finally, to discover th... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: lead free, nanomaterial, Perovskite Solar Cells (PSCs), photovoltaic, Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
Since its invention in 2009, Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has attracted great attention because of its low cost, numerous options of efficiency enhancement, ease of manufacturing and high-performance. Within a short span of time, the PSC has already outperformed thin-film and multicrystalline silicon solar cells. A current certified efficiency of 25.2% demonstrates that it has the potential to replace its forerunner generations. However, to commercialize PSCs, some problems need to be addressed. The toxic nature of lead which is the major component of light absorbing layer, and inherited stability issues of fabricated devices are the major hurdles in the industrialization of this technology. Therefore, new researching areas focus on the lead-free metal halide perovskites with analogous optical and photovoltaic performances. Tin being nontoxic and as one of group IV(A) elements, is considered as the most suitable alternate for lead because of their similarities in chemical properties.... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive control, course keeping, input saturation, unmanned surface vehicle.
This paper proposes a new and original course keeping control strategy for an unmanned surface vehicle in the presence of modeling error, external disturbance and input saturation. The trajectory linearization control method is used as the basic algorithm to design the course keeping strategy, and the radial basis function neural network and disturbance observer are used to compensate modeling error and external disturbance respectively to enhance the robustness of the control system. Moreover, a robust term is used to compensate various compensation errors to further improve the robustness of the system. In addition, hyperbolic tangent function and Nussbaum function are hired to deal with the potential input saturation problem, and the neural shunting model is adopted to avoid the computational explosion caused by the derivation of virtual control law. Taking the above facts into account will help to further realize engineering practice. Finally, the control strategy proposed in this... [more]

Keywords: AC drive, circuit simulation, common-mode voltage, ground leakage current, Modelling, quasi-resonant DC link inverter, voltage gradient.
In this paper, the modeling methodology of the AC drive system with a Parallel Quasi-Resonant DC Link Inverter (PQRDCLI) is described. A presented modeling approach is an attractive tool used for the effective evaluation of a common-mode (CM) voltage and grounds current reduction methods. Designed models of inverter, induction machine (IM), and cable are simple, thus the methods for parameter extraction are not complicated. Verification of the proposed modeling approach was realized with the use of the the Synopsys (Mountain View, CA, USA) SABER simulator, while simulation results were experimentally verified. Operation principles of the proposed PQRDCLI converter topology are also described. Based on simulation and experimental results, it was confirmed that the proposed PQRDCLI solution represents required performance within the reduction of common-mode voltage and ground current in electric drives. Moreover, comparisons from a simulation complexity point of view have been performed... [more]

Keywords: cooling system, cryogenic, HTS power cable, Liquified Natural Gas, reverse Brayton cycle.
With the increased commercialization of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power cables cooled using liquid nitrogen and the use of liquefied natural gas as fuel, the need for large-capacity reverse Brayton cryogenic systems is gradually increasing. In this paper, the thermodynamic design of a reverse Brayton cryogenic system with a cooling capacity of the 2 kW class at 77 K using neon as a refrigerant is described. Unlike conventional reverse Brayton systems, the proposed system uses a cryogenic turbo-expander, scroll compressor, and plate-type heat exchanger. The performance test conducted on the fabricated system is also described. The isentropic efficiency of the cryogenic turbo-expander was measured to be 86%, which is higher than the design specification. The effectiveness of the heat exchanger and the flow rate and operating pressure of the refrigerant were found to be lower than the design specifications. Consequently, the refrigeration capacity of the fabricated reverse Br... [more]

Keywords: active suppression method, notch filter, PMSWT, triple frequency ripple, wind shear.
Wind shear is among the important sources of torque fluctuation on mechanical side and output power fluctuation on electromagnetic side and grid connection point, which frequency are triple turbine rotation frequency. With the increase in wind turbine single capacity and wind power integration scale, the power fluctuation caused by wind shear cannot be ignored. The paper takes a direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous wind turbine (PMSWT) as the research object. Firstly, the fluctuation transfer mechanism model is established; then, the current ripple is extracted by a notch filter to calculate the voltage control signal to suppress power fluctuation actively by the DC link capacitor which absorbs fluctuation energy. The simulation experiment shows that the suppression strategy is effective and reliable.

Keywords: concentrated solar power, electricity mix, Morocco, photovoltaic, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, storage.
In this paper, we analyze the sensitivity of the optimal mixes to cost and variability associated with solar technologies and examine the role of Thermal Energy Storage (TES) combined to Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) together with time-space complementarity in reducing the adequacy risk—imposed by variable Renewable Energies (RE)—on the Moroccan electricity system. To do that, we model the optimal recommissioning of RE mixes including Photovoltaic (PV), wind energy and CSP without or with increasing levels of TES. Our objective is to maximize the RE production at a given cost, but also to limit the variance of the RE production stemming from meteorological fluctuations. This mean-variance analysis is a bi-objective optimization problem that is implemented in the E4CLIM modeling platform—which allows us to use climate data to simulate hourly Capacity Factors (CFs) and demand profiles adjusted to observations. We adapt this software to Morocco and its four electrical zones for the year... [more]

The production of sustainable and biodegradable products, for energy or material use, is becoming important for local economies. Thus, biorefineries can play an important role in sustainable development at regional levels and therefore the search for feedstocks with multiple uses is vital. The goal of this research was to assess the implementation of Cynara Cardunculus L. oil as the basis of a biorefinery for biodiesel and biolubricant production, proposing the main steps for this purpose. The chemical reaction selected for biodiesel and biolubricant production was transesterification, using methanol and other more complex alcohols. The optimization of each step was carried out, assessing the yield by gas chromatography. Once the optimum conditions were selected, the main characteristics of the biofuel or biolubricant were measured, paying attention to viscosity and oxidative stability. As a result, Cynara Cardunculus L. oil could be a suitable feedstock for a biorefinery, as long as s... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle, grid region, heat pump, load approach, low-voltage level.
While an area-wide implementation of electric vehicles (EVs) and electric heat pumps (HPs) will contribute to a decarbonization of the energy system, they represent new challenges for existing low-voltage (LV) power grids. Hence, this study investigates potential grid congestions on the basis of three contrasting load approaches applied to four different grid regions. Within the three load approaches, temporal characteristics of various grid customer classes (EVs, HPs, households etc.) are derived from highly resolved realistic load profiles. In accordance with classic grid planning, firstly a static load approach is analyzed by applying the modeled coincidence for each consumer class individually. Secondly, this static approach is modified by including combined coincidence factors, taking temporal consumer class interactions into account. Finally, both static load approaches are compared with detailed annual time series analyses by means of load flow simulations using real-life LV gri... [more]

The characteristics of spark ignition with a constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC) is evaluated for the efficiency of capacitive-assisted ignition (CAI), such as spark kernel and flame growth. The conventional spark method and matching effect of high voltage (MEHV) method are evaluated to compare the spark growth distribution characteristics. To do this study, a plasma system is used and is consisted of input power, three capacitors, a transformer, high voltage cable, J-type of a spark plug, diode, and CVCC. The experiment is conducted under various operating conditions, such as 1 bar, 295 K of initial temperature, 50, 100, 150 V of ignition box, 400 V of MEHV, 0.7 ms of spark duration, and 0 kΩ of plug resistor. The results show that the spark growth at the initial voltages of 100 V and 150 V has the same characteristic, and the surface area is increased by 13 mm2 at 150 V compared to 100 V because capacitance energy stored in three capacitors is efficiently induced by the effect... Subject: Other
Keywords: eddy current loss, FEA, IPMSM, irreversible demagnetization, permanent magnet, thermal equivalent circuit analysis.
We designed and analyzed an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) to prevent irreversible demagnetization of the permanent magnets (PMs). Irreversible demagnetization of NdFeB PMs mainly occurs due to high temperature, which should thus be minimized. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the eddy current loss in the PM through optimal design. The shape of the rotor core was optimized using finite element analysis (FEA) and response surface methodology. Three-dimensional (3-D) FEA is required for accurate computation of the eddy current loss, but there is huge time, effort, and cost consumption. Therefore, a method is proposed for indirectly calculating the eddy current loss of PMs using 2-D FEA. A thermal equivalent circuit analysis was used to calculate the PM temperature of the optimized model. For the thermal analysis, the copper loss, core loss, and eddy current loss in PMs were estimated and applied as a heat source. Based on the results, we confirmed the stability of... [more]
A Hybrid RCS Reduction Method for Wind Turbines

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: RCS reduction, reshaping methods, wind turbines.
Wind turbine towers produce significant scatterings when illuminated by radars. Their reflectivity affects air traffic control, military surveillance, vessel tracking, and weather data sensing processes. Reducing the radar cross-section (RCS) of wind turbines is an essential task when building wind farms. It has been proved that round and bumpy structures can scatter radar waves and reduce the RCS of a reflector. Other research showed that taper towers generate smaller radar returns than cylindrical towers. In this research, we combine both strategies to devise a more effective method for designing wind turbine towers in the hope that their RCS can be further reduced. The test results reveal that the proposed method out-performs current reshaping methods. Wind turbine towers possessing taper shapes and periodic surface bumps deflect incident electromagnetic waves to insignificant directions. Thus, radar returns in the back-scattering directions decrease. Other experiments also verify t... [more]

Keywords: anisotropic permeability, coalbed methane, dual peak production, large dip angle, stress heterogeneity, ultra-thick.
The large spatial variability of in-situ stress and initial reservoir pressure in steeply-dipping ultra-thick coalbed methane (UTCBM) reservoirs exert strong control on the initial distribution of stress-sensitive permeability. This results in significant differences in the propagation of reservoir depressurization, gas production characteristics, distribution of fluid saturation, and evolution of permeability relative to flat-lying and thin counterpart coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs. We contrast these responses using the Fukang mining area of the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang, China, as a type-example using coupled hydro-mechanical modeling. Production response indicates: (1) Dual peaks in CBM production rate, due to the asynchronous changes in the gas production rate in each the upper and lower sections of the reservoir; (2) higher depressurization and water saturation levels in the lower section of the reservoir relative to the upper at any given distance from the production well that a... Keywords: combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, NOx emission, unburned carbon, wall-firing boiler, wood pellet.
For renewable electricity production, biomass can fully displace coal in an existing power plant with some equipment modifications. Recently, a 125 MWe power plant burning mainly anthracite in Korea was retrofitted for dedicated wood pellet combustion with a change of boiler configuration from arch firing to wall firing. However, this boiler suffers from operational problems caused by high unburned carbon (UBC) contents in the bottom ash. This study comprises an investigation of some methods to reduce the UBC release while achieving lower NOx emissions. The computational fluid dynamics approach was established and validated for typical operating data. Subsequently, it was applied to elucidate the particle combustion and flow characteristics leading to the high UBC content and to evaluate the operating variables for improving the boiler performance. It was found that the high UBC content in the bottom ash was a combined effect of the poor fuel grindability and low gas velocity in the wi... [more]

Three-phase, four-wire split capacitor inverters are currently employed in many applications, such as photovoltaic systems, battery chargers for electric vehicles, active power filters, and, in general, in all grid-tied applications that deal with possible grid voltage and/or current unbalances. This paper provides a comprehensive evaluation of the capacitor-switching voltage ripple and dc-link switching voltage ripple for the three-phase, four-wire, split capacitor inverters. Specifically, analytical formulations of the peak-to-peak and rms values of the voltage ripples are originally pointed out in this paper and determined in the case of balanced three-phase and unbalanced (two-phase and single-phase) output (ac) currents. The obtained results can help in designing the considered inverter and sizing of the dc-link capacitors. The Hyperloop has been developed using various technologies to reach a maximum speed of 1200 km/h. Such technologies include magnetic levitation technologies that are suitable for subsonic driving. In the Hyperloop, the null-flux electrodynamic suspension (EDS) system and superconducting magnets (SCMs) can perform stable levitation without control during high-speed driving. Although an EDS device can be accurately analyzed using numerical analysis methods, such as the 3D finite element method (FEM) or dynamic circuitry theory, its 3D configurations make it difficult to use in various design analyses. This paper presents a new design model that fast analyzes and compares many designs of null-flux EDS devices for the Hyperloop system. For a fast and effective evaluation of various levitation coil shapes and arrangements, the computational process of the induced electromotive force and the coupling effect were simplified using a 2D rectangular coil loop, and the induced current and force... Keywords: clean coal technologies, coal to hydrogen, economic assessment of coal gasification in Poland, hydrogen production and outlook.
This study documents the results of economic assessment concerning four variants of coal gasification to hydrogen in a shell reactor. That assessment has been made using discounting methods (NPV: net present value, IRR: internal rate of return), as well as indicators based on a free cash flow to firm (FCFF) approach. Additionally, sensitivity analysis has been carried out, along with scenario analysis in current market conditions concerning prices of hard coal, lignite, hydrogen and CO2 allowances, as well as capital expenditures and costs related to carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems. Based on NPV results, a negative economic assessment has been obtained for all the analyzed variants varying within the range of EUR −903 to −142 million, although the variants based on hard coal achieved a positive IRR (5.1−5.7%) but lower than the assumed discount rates. In Polish conditions, the gasification of lignite seems to be unprofitable, in the assumed scale of total investment outlays an... [more]

A novel gearshift scheduling strategy has been framed for a two-speed transmission system in electric vehicles that can save energy during hilly driving and frequently changing driving conditions through efficient electric motor operation. Unlike the traditional approach, the proposed gearshift strategy is based on the preferred vehicle speed range, vehicle acceleration, and road grade to ensure desired vehicle performances with minimum energy consumption. Meanwhile, the vehicle speed range is chosen around the electric motor rated speed, and two gearshift schedules in relation to vehicle acceleration and road grade are developed based on the motor torque generating capacity and efficiency. Appropriate gear is selected through a combined assessment of the required vehicle speed, acceleration, and road grade information. A guideline is developed and explained for the primary gearshift schedule. Next, the gear ratios and gearshift schedules are optimized combinedly in a Simulink environm... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: electric grid stabilization, electricity storage, energy transition, pumped hydro storage, regional economic development, Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
We review the status of a 1.4 GW, 8 GWh underground pumped hydro storage (U-PHS) project in the southern Netherlands, which has been under development since the 1980s. Its history shows how the prospect of a large-scale U-PHS for The Netherlands (a country whose proverbial flatness prohibits PHS) has been attractive in every decade, based on proven technology in a subsurface location with validated properties, and solid analysis of its economics. Although the ongoing energy transition clearly requires massive electricity storage, (U-)PHS projects are challenging investment propositions, in The Netherlands, as elsewhere. This case study illustrates a point of general relevance, namely that although the project execution risk, related to uncertainty with respect to subsurface integrity, is very low, the transition risk, associated with the intrinsic uncertainties of an electricity system in transition, is significant. We point out mitigation strategies for both risk categories.

Keywords: industrial sector, net metering, Philippines, rooftop solar PV.
The industrial sector is a major contributor to the economic growth of the Philippines. However, it is also one of the top consumers of energy, which is produced mainly from fossil fuels. The Philippine industrial sector must therefore be supported economically while minimizing the emissions associated with energy consumption. A potential strategy for minimizing costs and emissions is the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules on the rooftops of industrial facilities, but this approach is hindered by existing energy policies in the country. In this work, we performed a techno-economic assessment on the implementation of rooftop solar PV in Philippine industrial facilities under different policy scenarios. Our study considered 139 randomly sampled industrial plants under MERALCO franchise area in the Philippines. Under the current net metering policy, 132 of the evaluated facilities were economically viable for the integration of rooftop solar PV. This corresponds to an additio... [more]

Keywords: adaptive control, interior permanent magnet motors, maximum torque per ampere, sensorless control.
Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) efficiency can be improved by using maximum torque per ampere control (MTPA). MTPA control utilizes both alignment and reluctance torques and usually requires information about the magnetization map of the electrical machine. This paper proposes an adaptive MTPA algorithm for sensorless control systems of IPMSM drives, which is applicable in industrial and commercial drives. This algorithm enhances conventional control schemes, where the output of the speed controller is the commanded stator current and the direct current is calculated using an MTPA equation; therefore, it can be easily implemented in the previously developed drives. The proposed algorithm does not use any motor parameters for the calculation of the MTPA trajectory, which is important for systems operating in changing environmental conditions, because motor inductances and flux linkage strongly depend on the stator current and the rotor temperature, respectively.
