Environmental Impacts of Integrated Photovoltaic Modules in Light Utility Electric Vehicles
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 emissions, electric vehicles, life cycle assessment, photovoltaic systems, VIPV.
This paper presents a life cycle assessment (LCA) of photovoltaic (PV) solar modules which have been integrated into electric vehicle applications, also called vehicle integrated photovoltaics (VIPV). The LCA was executed by means of GaBi LCA software with Ecoinvent v2.2 as a background database, with a focus on the global warming potential (GWP). A light utility electric vehicle (LUV) named StreetScooter Work L, with a PV array of 930 Wp, was analyzed for the location of Cologne, Germany. An operation time of 8 years and an average shadowing factor of 30% were assumed. The functional unit of this LCA is 1 kWh of generated PV electricity on-board, for which an emission factor of 0.357 kg CO2-eq/kWh was calculated, whereas the average grid emissions would be 0.435 kg CO2-eq/kWh. Hence, charging by PV power hence causes lower emissions than charging an EV by the grid. The study further shows how changes in the shadowing factor, operation time, and other aspects affect vehicle’s emissions... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: 35-kV high reliability distribution network, distributed multi-point fault location, noise and analog-digital conversion, wavelet filter-S transform.
Timely and accurate fault location for a 35-kVhigh-reliability distribution network is one of the key technologies to improve the safety and efficiency of distribution network operations. A novel fault location method of 35-kV high-reliability distribution network is proposed in this paper. First, the distributed multipoint fault location model is established based on the power structure of a 35-kV high-reliability distribution network. The distribution of voltage and current traveling waves along the lines is comprehensively considered in this model. Secondly, we analyze the influence of noise interference, analog-digital conversion frequency, and conversion bits on the location accuracy. The simulation method of noise and analog-digital conversion is proposed based on simulated samples. Then, a wavelet filter is used to reduce the influence of noise on the calibration of the traveling wave arrival time, and matrix modulus of S transform is used to identify the arrival time for the wa... Prediction of Slag Characteristics Based on Artificial Neural Network for Molten Gasification of Hazardous Wastes
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: artificial neural network, hazardous wastes, molten gasification, slag, viscosity.
Molten gasification is considered as a promising technology for the processing and safe disposal of hazardous wastes. During this process, the organic components are completely converted while the hazardous materials are safely embedded in slag via the fusion-solidification-vitrification transformation. Ideally, the slag should be glassy with low viscosity to ensure the effective immobilization and steady discharge of hazardous materials. However, it is very difficult to predict the characteristics of slag using existing empirical equations or conventional mathematical methods, due to the complex non-linear relationship among the phase transformation, vitrification transition and chemical composition of slag. Equipped with a strong nonlinear mapping ability, an artificial neural network may be able to predict the properties of slags if a large amount of data is available for training. In this work, over 10,000 experimental data points were used to train and develop a slag classificatio... [more]

Impedance Modeling and Stability Analysis of VSG Controlled Grid-Connected Converters with Cascaded Inner Control Loop
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: impedance model, small-signal modeling, system stability, virtual synchronous generator (VSG), weak grid.
This paper develops the impedance models of grid-connected converters under the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) strategy with a cascaded inner control loop and analyzes the system stability of VSG controlled converters with different kinds of weak grid. Different from existing small-signal models with high dimensions, a single-in-single-out (SISO) impedance model with simple mathematical expression is obtained in this paper, which is applied to identify the influence of the cascaded control loop on impedance characteristics and system stability. It is found that the impedance characteristics of VSG controlled converters can become capacitive below the fundamental frequency, and it is mainly caused by the voltage controller in the cascaded control loop of the VSG strategy. Impedance-based stability analysis shows that the capacitive impedance characteristics can benefit the compatibility of converters operated with the series-compensated weak grid, but may deteriorate the system sta... April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: building cluster, demand side management, energy flexible buildings, grid stability, load shifting, multi-agent based, residual load, substation.
Increasing numbers of photovoltaic systems and heat pumps in existing building clusters can lead to an overload of the associated electric grid substations. Based on a multi-agent-based simulation of three building cluster types the impact of building flexibility in regard to the residual substation load is studied. Each building announces its available flexibility, e.g., “heat pump can be switched off/on”. A cluster master coordinator evaluates the incoming offers and decides which offers are accepted in regard to the substation’s capacity utilization. The goal is to honour the substation’s limit by shifting the residual load. This paper presents results from three typical urban building clusters for different penetration scenarios in regard to heat pumps, photovoltaic systems, batteries and electric vehicles. It is shown that in the studied building clusters a high penetration of heat pumps and photovoltaic systems can violate the existing substation’s limits, regardless of the effor... [more]

Sensitivity Study of Greitzer Model Based on Physical System Parameters of Radial Compressing Units
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: compressor modelling, greitzer model, radial compressors, safety, surge phenomenon.
Centrifugal compressors are key elements of energy systems and industrial installations including fluid flow. Their operating range is strictly limited by the surge phenomenon. The Greitzer model is a known way of simulating the compressor’s behaviour at the surge. In this paper, the parametric study of different versions of the Greitzer model is conducted. There are several versions of this model that include 4 to 2 equation models. The system behaviour depends on the features of the compressor itself as well as of the plenum. In this paper, all terms connected with the compressor were grouped into the “Co” parameter, while those associated with the plenum were grouped into the “Pl” parameter. The study shows how each component influences the system stability. The comparison of analytical data with experimental results allowed to draw conclusions regarding the way of choosing the model parameters that provide the best simulation of the real system behaviour. The study shows that the s... [more]

Simulation of Heat and Mass Transfer Characteristics for the Optimal Operating Conditions of a Gas-to-Gas Membrane Humidifier with Porous Metal Foam
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas-to-gas membrane humidifier, heat transfer, mass transfer, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, porous metal foam.
The shell-and-tube type gas-to-gas membrane humidifier used with air supply to polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell supplies heat and vapor through a membrane and does not require an additional power source. Packing porous metal foam in the flow path of the membrane humidifier can result in higher heat and mass transfer efficiencies due to heat conduction through metal. In this study, the influence of various operating conditions and types of porous metal foams on the transport characteristics of the membrane humidifier are evaluated by simulation. The main factor causing the improvement of heat and mass transfer is the high conductivity of the porous metal foam, which is significantly correlated with the type of material used, compression ratio, and pore diameter. Additionally, the heat and mass transfer changes significantly when the flow velocity and channel size change due to the effect of the metal foam becoming more pronounced.

Probabilistic Availability Analysis for Marine Energy Transfer Subsystem Using Bayesian Network
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Monitoring
Keywords: availability, Bayesian Network, energy transfer subsystem, fault tree, mapping algorithm, marine energy conversion systems.
This research work proposes a novel approach to estimate probabilities of availability states of the energy transfer network in marine energy conversion subsystems, using Bayesian Networks (BNs). The logical interrelationships between units at different level in this network can be understood through qualitative system analysis, which then can be modeled by the fault tree (FT). The FT can be mapped to a corresponding BN, and the condition probabilities of nodes can be determined based on the logic structure. A case study was performed to demonstrate how the mapping is implemented, and the probabilities of availability states were estimated. The results give the probability of each availability state as a function of time, which serves as a basis for choosing the optimal design solution.

N Evolution and Physiochemical Structure Changes in Chars during Co-Pyrolysis: Effects of Abundance of Glucose in Fiberboard
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: co-pyrolysis, evolution, fiberboard, glucose, nitrogen.
The simple incineration of wood-based panels (WBPs) waste generates a significant amount of NO, which has led to urgency in developing a new method for treating the N-containing biomass residues. This work aims to examine the N evolution and physiochemical structural changes during the co-pyrolysis of fiberboard and glucose, where the percentage of glucose in the feedstock was varied from 0% to 70%. It was found that N retention in chars was monotonically increased with increasing use of glucose, achieving ~60% N fixation when the glucose accounted for 70% in the mixture. Pyrrole-N (N-5) and Pyridine-N (N-6) were preferentially formed at high ratios of glucose to fiberboard. While the relevant importance of volatile−char interactions to N retention and transformation could be observed, the volatile−volatile reactions from the two feedstocks played a vital role in the increase in abundance of glucose. With the introduction of glucose, the porous structure and porosity in chars from the... [more]

The Influence of the Process of Sugar Beet Storage on Its Biochemical Methane Potential
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biochemical methane potential (BMP), methane fermentation, storage methods, sugar beet.
The manner of storage of sugar beets largely influences their physical and chemical properties, which may subsequently determine their biochemical methane potential. In this study, samples of fresh sugar beets as well as beets stored in two ways—in airtight conditions and in an open-air container—were tested. In both cases, measurements were taken on specific dates, i.e., after 4, 8, 16 and 32 weeks of storage. A decrease in pH was observed in all samples, with the lowest decrease occurring in hermetically stored samples. The lowest pH value of 3.71 was obtained for sugar beets stored in an open-air container after 32 weeks of storage. During storage, a gradual decrease in total solids was also recorded along with accompanying losses of organic matter, more significant in the case of storage in an open-air container. In subsequent storage periods, the biogas/methane production efficiency differed slightly for both methods. The highest volume of biogas was obtained for fresh sugar beets... [more]

Influence of Gaseous Hydrogen Addition on Initiation of Rotating Detonation in Liquid Fuel−Air Mixtures
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Hydrogen is the most common molecule in the universe. It is an excellent fuel for thermal engines: piston, turbojet, rocket, and, going forward, in thermonuclear power plants. Hydrogen is currently used across a range of industrial applications including propulsion systems, e.g., cars and rockets. One obstacle to expanding hydrogen use, especially in the transportation sector, is its low density. This paper explores hydrogen as an addition to liquid fuel in the detonation chamber to generate thermal energy for potential use in transportation and generation of electrical energy. Experiments with liquid kerosene, hexane, and ethanol with the addition of gaseous hydrogen were conducted in a modern rotating detonation chamber. Detonation combustion delivers greater thermal efficiency and reduced NOx emission. Since detonation propagates about three orders of magnitude faster than deflagration, the injection, evaporation, and mixing with air must be almost instantaneous. Hydrogen addition h... [more]

Computationally Efficient Modeling of DC-DC Converters for PV Applications
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: DC-DC converters, photovoltaics, single-diode model, state-space.
In this work, a computationally efficient approach for the simulation of a DC-DC converter connected to a photovoltaic device is proposed. The methodology is based on a combination of a highly efficient formulation of the one-diode model for photovoltaic (PV) devices and a state-space formulation of the converter as well as an accurate steady-state detection methodology. The approach was experimentally validated to assess its accuracy. The model is accurate both in its dynamic response (tested in full linearity and with a simulated PV device as the input) and in its steady-state response (tested with an outdoor experimental measurement setup). The model detects automatically the reaching of a steady state, thus resulting in lowered computational costs. The approach is presented as a mathematical model that can be efficiently included in a large simulation system or statistical analysis.

Metaheuristic Optimization of Power and Energy Systems: Underlying Principles and Main Issues of the ‘Rush to Heuristics’
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: constraints, convergence, evolutionary computation, global optimum, guidelines, large-scale optimization, metaheuristics, review, survey, underlying principles.
In the power and energy systems area, a progressive increase of literature contributions that contain applications of metaheuristic algorithms is occurring. In many cases, these applications are merely aimed at proposing the testing of an existing metaheuristic algorithm on a specific problem, claiming that the proposed method is better than other methods that are based on weak comparisons. This ‘rush to heuristics’ does not happen in the evolutionary computation domain, where the rules for setting up rigorous comparisons are stricter but are typical of the domains of application of the metaheuristics. This paper considers the applications to power and energy systems and aims at providing a comprehensive view of the main issues that concern the use of metaheuristics for global optimization problems. A set of underlying principles that characterize the metaheuristic algorithms is presented. The customization of metaheuristic algorithms to fit the constraints of specific problems is disc... [more]
