April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dispatch model, integration, load shifting, power system, renewable curtailments, renewables, transmission grid
The future European power system is projected to rely heavily on variable renewable energy sources (VRES), primarily wind and solar generation. However, the difficulties inherent to storing the primary energy of these sources is expected to pose significant challenges in terms of their integration into the system. To account for the high variability of renewable energy sources VRES, a novel pan-European dispatch model with high spatio-temporal resolution including load shifting is introduced here, providing highly detailed information regarding renewable energy curtailments for all Europe, typically underestimated in studies of future systems. which also includes modeling of load shifting. The model consists of four separate levels with different approaches for modeling thermal generation flexibility, storage units and demand as well as with spatial resolutions and generation dispatch formulations. Applying the developed model for the future European power system follows the results of... [more]
The Energy and Exergy of Light with Application to Societal Exergy Analysis

Keywords: efficiency, Exergy, illumination, light, lumen, luminous efficacy, radiation, spectrum, thermodynamics
Lighting provides an indispensable energy service, illumination. The field of societal exergy analysis considers light (and many other energy products) to be enablers of economic growth, and lighting contributes a non-negligible proportion of total useful exergy supplied to modern economies. In societal exergy analysis, the exergetic efficiency of electric lamps is central to determining the exergy contribution of lighting to an economy. Conventionally, societal exergy practitioners estimate the exergetic efficiency of lamps by an energy efficiency, causing confusion and, sometimes, overestimation of exergetic efficiency by a factor as large as 3. In response, we use recent results from the fields of radiation thermodynamics and photometry to develop an exact method for calculating the exergy of light and the exergetic efficiency of lamps. The exact method (a) is free of any assumptions for the value of the maximum luminous efficacy, (b) uses a non-unity spectral exergy-to-energy ratio... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Machine Learning, random forest, wind speed forecasting
Although the random forest (RF) model is a powerful machine learning tool that has been utilized in many wind speed/power forecasting studies, there has been no consensus on optimal RF modeling strategies. This study investigates three basic questions which aim to assist in the discernment and quantification of the effects of individual model properties, namely: (1) using a standalone RF model versus using RF as a correction mechanism for the persistence approach, (2) utilizing a recursive versus direct multi-step forecasting strategy, and (3) training data availability on model forecasting accuracy from one to six hours ahead. These questions are investigated utilizing data from the FINO1 offshore platform and Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) C1 site, and testing results are compared to the persistence method. At FINO1, due to the presence of multiple wind farms and high inter-annual variability, RF is more effective as an error-correction mechanism... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bearingless, displacements, global sliding-mode control, robust, suspension
Bearingless motor development is a substitute for magnetic bearing motors owing to several benefits, such as nominal repairs, compactness, lower cost, and no need for high-power amplifiers. Compared to conventional motors, rotor levitation and its steady control is an additional duty in bearingless switched reluctance motors when starting. For high-speed applications, the use of simple proportional integral derivative and fuzzy control schemes are not in effect in suspension control of the rotor owing to inherent parameter variations and external suspension loads. In this paper, a new robust global sliding-mode controller is suggested to control rotor displacements and their positions to ensure fewer eccentric rotor displacements when a bearingless switched reluctance motor is subjected to different parameter variations and loads. Extra exponential fast-decaying nonlinear functions and rotor-tracking error functions have been used in the modeling of the global sliding-mode switching su... [more]

Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), electric submersible pumps (ESPs), flow pattern, two-phase flow, viscosity effect
Electric submersible pumps (ESPs) are widely used in the oil and gas industry for crude-oil lifting, especially in subsea oil fields or underground storage caverns. The failure of ESPs causes a large economic cost mainly attributed to a break in production continuity, as the ESP cannot be easily replaced. Therefore, the assurance of safe and efficient operation of ESPs has attracted high attention in recent years, although the problem still remains challenging given the complexity of carrying fluid and the mechanical structure of the ESP. In this article, we systematically review both the high-impact, classic contributions and the most up-to-date, current opinions in experimental and numerical advances of viscous effects and two-phase flow in ESPs. We specifically focus on the applications in the oil and gas industry and point out a few current challenges in the operation of ESPs. We aim to guide the audience which is new to the area of ESPs to the correct articles related to their int... [more]

Keywords: agricultural runoff, anaerobic digestion, biogas, biomethane, biorefinery, microalgae, photobioreactor, pretreatment, Wastewater
Microalgae-based wastewater treatment plants are low-cost alternatives for recovering nutrients from contaminated effluents through microalgal biomass, which may be subsequently processed into valuable bioproducts and bioenergy. Anaerobic digestion for biogas and biomethane production is the most straightforward and applicable technology for bioenergy recovery. However, pretreatment techniques may be needed to enhance the anaerobic biodegradability of microalgae. To date, very few full-scale systems have been put through, due to acknowledged bottlenecks such as low biomass concentration after conventional harvesting and inefficient processing into valuable products. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anaerobic digestion of pretreated microalgal biomass in a demonstration-scale microalgae biorefinery, and to compare the results obtained with previous research conducted at lab-scale, in order to assess the scalability of this bioprocess. In the lab-scale experiments, real municipa... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed, energy saving, metro line, Model Predictive Control, operational constraints, train regulation
Due to environmental concerns, the energy-saving train regulation is necessary for urban metro transportation, which can improve the service quality and energy efficiency of metro lines. In contrast to most of the existing research of train regulation based on centralized control, this paper studies the energy-saving train regulation problem by utilizing distributed model predictive control (DMPC), which is motivated by the breakthrough of vehicle-based train control (VBTC) technology and the pressing real-time control demand. Firstly, we establish a distributed control framework for train regulation process assuming each train is self-organized and capable to communicate with its preceding train. Then we propose a DMPC algorithm for solving the energy-saving train regulation problem, where each train determines its control input by minimizing a constrained local cost function mainly composed of schedule deviation, headway deviation, and energy consumption. Finally, simulations on trai... [more]

Keywords: clean production, Computational Fluid Dynamics, desalination, parabolic trough collector, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy, sustainable
Solar-powered desalination is a sustainable solution for countries experiencing water scarcity. Several studies have presented different solutions to provide cleaner production in desalination systems. Parabolic trough collector (PTC) is one of these solutions that has proven to be superior among solar concentrators. Furthermore, a number of studies have investigated the use of PTC for distillation of saline water in response to water scarcity. In this study, a modified PTC model was developed, in which the heat exchanger was replaced by a condensation tube to reduce the energy consumption, and a black layer was introduced to the surface of the receiver to enhance its absorptance. As a reference case, the system productivity according to average solar intensities in Zagazig, located at 30°34′N 31°30′E in the North East of Egypt, is estimated. The results indicated that the maximum production rate that can be attained is 1.72 kg/h. Then, the structure of the system is evaluated with the... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: cost minimization, microgrids, optimal sizing problems, optimization problems, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sustainable development
Renewable energy sources are environmentally friendly and cost-efficient. However, the problem with these renewable resources is their heavy reliance on weather conditions. Thus, at times, these solutions are not guaranteed to meet the required demand all the time. For this, hybrid microgrids are introduced, which have a combination of both renewable energy sources and non-renewable energy resources. In this paper, a cost-efficient optimization algorithm is proposed that minimizes the use of non-renewable energy sources. It maximizes the use of renewable energy resources by meeting the demand for utility grids. Real data based on the load and demand of the utility grids in Italy is used, and a system that determines the optimal sizing of the microgrid and a daily plan is introduced to optimize the renewable resources operations. As part of the proposal, the objective function for the operation and planning of the microgrid in such a way to minimize cost is formulated. Moreover, a varia... [more]

Keywords: aircraft, biological inspiration, dragonfly, inertial, insect
The actuated abdomens of insects such as dragonflies have long been suggested to play a role in optimisation and control of flight. We have examined the effect of this type of actuation in the simplified case of a small fixed wing aircraft to determine whether energetic advantages exist in normal flight when compared to the cost of actuation using aerodynamic control surfaces. We explore the benefits the abdomen/tail might provide to balance level flight against trim changes. We also consider the transient advantage of using alternative longitudinal control effectors in a pull up flight maneuver. Results show that the articulated abdomen significantly reduces energy consumption and increase performance in isolated manoeuvres. The results also indicate a design feature that could be incorporated into small unmanned aircraft under particular circumstances. We aim to highlight behaviours that would increase flight efficiency to inform designers of micro aerial vehicles and to aid the anal... [more]
Phase Analysis of Series Arc Signals for Low-Voltage Electrical Devices

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical fires, low-voltage electrical devices, phase analysis, series arc
An arc fault is an electrical breakdown of the insulating medium in an electrical system. When arc faults occur, they cause electrical fires with local sparks and temperatures of over 5000 °C. A series arc is generated in series with a load due to an incomplete connection between cords or a loose connection between a cord and terminal. However, it is hard to detect series arc faults with arc protection devices because the fault current flowing by series arc in the circuit is not higher than the load current. Especially in Korea, preventing electrical fires by series arc is rarely applied because there is no national standard for arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCI) and arc fault detection devices (AFDD). Therefore, many studies for reliable arc detection and analysis are still necessary to prevent electrical fires. In this study, phase analyses of series arc signals for low-voltage electrical devices such as heaters, computers, refrigerators, and air conditioners were conducted. The a... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 emission, countries of Central and Eastern Europe, economic determinants, EKC hypothesis, panel data analysis, public goods
The article examines the relationship between CO2 equivalent emissions and agricultural production, taking into account additional economic and social variables that correct the considered relationship for the six Central and Eastern European countries over the period 1992−2017. The aim of the article was to confirm or negate the occurrence of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Countries that experienced a political transformation and were subsequently admitted to the European Union (EU) undergoing a preparatory period were included. The topic is timely as all EU countries are required to monitor their emissions under the EU Climate Monitoring Mechanism. The discussed problem is significant due to the changes taking place in the common agricultural policy, the choice of actions to be taken by individual countries in their national policies, and the choice of instruments to support the transformation of agriculture. Agriculture has a pa... [more]

Keywords: analysis, analytical calculations, asymmetric busbar system, design methods, EIPB, electrodynamic forces, FEM, Simulation
Proper busbar selection based on analytical calculations is of great importance in terms of power grid functioning and its safe usage. Experimental tests concerning busbars are very expensive and difficult to be executed. Therefore, the great advantage for setting the valid parameters for busbar systems components are analytical calculations supported by FEM (finite element method) modelling and analysis. Determining electrodynamic forces in busbar systems tends to be crucial with regard to subsidiary, dependent parameters. In this paper analytical calculations of asymmetric three-phase busbar system were carried out. Key parameters, like maximal electrodynamic forces value, mechanical strength value, busbar natural frequency, etc., were calculated. Calculations were conducted with an ANSYS model of a parallel asymmetric busbar system, which confirmed the obtained results. Moreover, showing that a model based on finite elements tends to be very helpful in the selection of unusually-sha... [more]
Impact of DSM on Energy Management in a Single-Family House with a Heat Pump and Photovoltaic Installation

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand-side management, Energy Storage, heat pump
This article presents a case study of a single-family house, whose current energy source is electricity only. Nine years ago, the heat source for the heating system and domestic hot water was an oil boiler, which was changed to an air−water heat pump. Four years ago, when Poland formed the basis of the prosumer market, the first photovoltaic system was established. It was expanded in the following years. In this work are presented the impact of using a heat accumulator on the coefficient of performance of the heat pump, the self-consumption of energy from the photovoltaic system, and the cost of purchasing energy. Comparative calculations were made, with the demand-side management (DSM) active on work days, and on free days (weekends and public holidays) it was not. Attention was paid to the self-consumption factor depending on the algorithms used in an energy meter. The prosumer market in Poland was also described. The calculations described the house as having an annual energy self-c... [more]

Keywords: FCS-MPC, grid connected inverters, predictive control, spread spectrum, switching frequency
Finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) has been widely investigated in recent years due to its ability to handle optimization problems with multiple control objectives in a diverse variety of systems. Moreover, its direct implementation in digital-based systems has made it an attractive strategy in static power converter applications. However, its characteristics such as variable switching frequency and spread harmonic spectrum limit the use of standard MPC due to power losses, audible noise, steady-state performance, and resonances. To mitigate these problems and extend the FCS-MPC applications to new areas, this paper proposes a new hybrid predictive control scheme, capable of achieving a harmonic spectrum distribution similar to that obtained with a pulse-width modulation scheme. The proposed strategy is based on a system model to generate an optimization, and, at the same time, an input restriction in the cost function of the standard FCS-MPC. This new approach is va... April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fractional derivative, heat transfer, inverse problem, inverse Stefan problem, solidification
The paper presents an application of the homotopy analysis method for solving the one-phase fractional inverse Stefan design problem. The problem was to determine the temperature distribution in the domain and functions describing the temperature and the heat flux on one of the considered area boundaries. It was demonstrated that if the series constructed for the method is convergent then its sum is a solution of the considered equation. The sufficient condition of this convergence was also presented as well as the error of the approximate solution estimation. The paper also includes the example presenting the application of the described method. The obtained results show the usefulness of the proposed method. The method is stable for the input data disturbances and converges quickly. The big advantage of this method is the fact that it does not require discretization of the area and the solution is a continuous function.

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: biodiversity, climate, integrative policy support, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, social participation
Massive deployment of renewables is considered as a decisive step in most countries’ climate efforts. However, at the local scale, it is also perceived by many as a threat to their rich and diverse natural environment. With this perspective, we argue that this green versus green pseudo-dilemma highlights how crucial a broad societal buy-in is. New, transparent, participatory processes and mechanisms that are oriented toward social licensing can now be employed. A novel, integrative research agenda must orbit around co-creation to enable and promote resource co-management and co-ownership where possible, with increased consensus.

Keywords: composites, insulators, Modelling, offshore wind energy, power cables, water trees
Due to the growing demand for offshore renewable energy, the development of durable submarine power cables is critical. Submarine power cables are expected to have a service life of over 20 years. However, it has been shown that these cables suffer from water-tree flaws that progressively extend to conductors and corrode copper, which may lead to premature failure. Water treeing is caused by the of interconnection of voids (of a few nanometers) that are present in the insulator after manufacturing or formed during operation. The economic consequences of a breakdown can be drastic due to the heavy maintenance required. In the current study, the insulator is modelled as cubic unit cells containing water voids in the form of ellipsoids. The displacement field of ellipsoids is found to be dependent on its distribution in the cubic cell and on the applied electric field. Von Mises stress and effective plastic strain at the tips of the ellipsoid are found to be significant when either the re... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Absorption, Carbon Dioxide Capture, CO2-rich gas, microchannel
This work focused on the application of a microchannel contactor for CO2 capture using water as absorbent, especially for the application of CO2-rich gas. The influence of operating conditions (temperature, volumetric flow rate of gas and liquid, and CO2 concentration) on the absorption efficiency and the overall liquid-side volumetric mass transfer coefficient was presented in terms of the main effects and interactions based on the factorial design of experiments. It was found that 70.9% of CO2 capture was achieved under the operating conditions as follows; temperature of 50 °C, CO2 inlet fraction of 53.7%, total gas volumetric flow rate of 150 mL min−1, and adsorbent volumetric flow rate of 1 mL min−1. Outstanding performance of CO2 capture was demonstrated with the overall liquid-side volumetric mass transfer coefficient of 0.26 s−1. Further enhancing the system by using 2.2 M of monoethanolamine in water (1:1 molar ratio of MEA-to-CO2) boosted the absorption efficiency up to 88%.

Keywords: analytical expression, multi-physics, optimal rib/pitch ratio, parameters sensitivity, solid oxide electrolysis cell
Structure design is of great value for the performance improvement of solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) to diminish the gap between scientific research and industrial application. A comprehensive multi-physics coupled model is constructed to conduct parameter sensitivity analysis to reveal the primary and secondary factors on the SOEC performance and optimal rib width. It is found that the parameters of the O2 electrode have almost no influence on the optimal rib width at the H2 electrode side and vice versa. The optimized rib width is not sensitive to the electrode porosity, thickness, electrical conductivity and gas composition. The optimal rib width at the H2 electrode side is sensitive to the contact resistance at the interface between the electrode and interconnect rib, while the extremely small concentration loss at the O2 electrode leads to the insensitivity of optimal rib width to the parameters influencing the O2 diffusion. In addition to the contact resistance, the appli... [more]

Ground thermal properties are the design basis of ground source heat pumps (GSHP). However, effective ground thermal properties cannot be obtained through the traditional thermal response test (TRT) method when it is used in the coaxial borehole heat exchanger (CBHE). In this paper, an improved TRT (ITRT) method for CBHE is proposed, and the field ITRT, based on the actual project, is carried out. The high accuracy of the new method is verified by laboratory experiments. Based on the results of the ITRT and laboratory experiment, the 3D numerical model for CBHE is established, in which the flow directions, sensitivity analysis of heat transfer characteristics, and optimization of circulation flow rate are studied, respectively. The results show that CBHE should adopt the anulus-in direction under the cooling condition, and the center-in direction under the heating condition. The influence of inlet temperature and flow rate on heat transfer rate is more significant than that of the back... [more]

With the introduction of the more electric aircraft, there is growing emphasis on improving overall efficiency and thus gravimetric and volumetric power density, as well as smart functionalities and safety of an aircraft. In future on-board power distribution networks, so-called high voltage DC (HVDC, typically +/−270VDC) supplies will be introduced to facilitate distribution and reduce the associated mass and volume, including harness. Future aircraft power distribution systems will also very likely include energy storage devices (probably, batteries) for emergency back up and engine starting. Correspondingly, novel DC-DC conversion solutions are required, which can interface the traditional low voltage (28 V) DC bus with the new 270 V one. Such solutions presently need to cater for a significant degree of flexibility in their power ratings, power transfer capability and number of inputs/outputs. Specifically, multi-port power-scalable bi-directional converters are required. This pape... [more]

Keywords: finite element method (FEM), floating potential, maglev train, stray capacitance, suspension electromagnet (SEM)
The suspension electromagnet (SEM) is one of the most critical components of the low-speed maglev train to achieve the stable suspension and non-contact operation with the track. Therefore, it is valuable for optimizing the maglev system to study the characteristics of the SEM. This paper proposes a novel analytic method to calculate the equivalent stray capacitance of the SEM efficiently. It considers the capacitances inside the winding (turn to turn and layer to layer) and between the winding and core. Firstly, utilizing the compensation analytic method (CAM) calculates the static capacitances to reduce the calculation error, and the results of the CAM have significant improvement comparing with that of the traditional analytic method (TAM). Secondly, the analytical formula of the core floating potential is derived based on the partial capacitance theory, which has a 2.1% relative error to the finite element method (FEM). Finally, the experiment results of the SEM of a test rig prove... [more]

Phosphorus (P) recovery from sewage sludge ash (SSA) is one of the most promising approaches of phosphate rock substitution in mineral fertilizers and might be a sustainable way to secure supply of this raw material in the future. In the current investigation, the process of thermochemical treatment of SSA was applied to SSA coming from selected mono-incineration plants of municipal sewage sludge in Poland (Cracow, Gdansk, Gdynia, Lodz, Kielce and Szczecin). The Polish SSA was thermochemically converted in the presence of sodium (Na) additives and a reducing agent (dried sewage sludge) to obtain secondary raw materials for the production of marketable P fertilizers. The process had a positive impact on the bioavailability of phosphorus and reduced the content of heavy metals in the obtained products. The P solubility in neutral ammonium citrate, an indicator of its bioavailability, was significantly raised from 19.7−45.7% in the raw ashes and 76.5−100% in the thermochemically treated S... [more]
