A Novel ILP Formulation for PCB Maintenance Considering Electrical Measurements and Aging Factors: A “Right to Repair” Approach
Panagiotis S. Karagiannopoulos, Nikolaos M. Manousakis, Constantinos S. Psomopoulos.
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: aging, domestic appliances, failure rate, integer linear programming, printed circuit boards, service budget.
The design of longer-lasting products, such as domestic electric appliances, is a key-stone approach of the circular economy to reduce the use of non-reusable materials and the number of wastes to be managed at the end of the product’s life as well as to extend it. The manufacturing of modern electric appliances includes the incorporation of printed circuit boards (PCBs). PCBs provide mechanical support and electrically connect electrical or electronic components using conductive trackpads and other features etched from one or more sheet layers of copper laminated onto and/or between sheet layers of a non-conductive substrate. This paper proposes a PCB maintenance framework, fully compliant with the “Right to Repair” concept, considering the impact of their aging failures based on measurements made on them, as well as the repair and replacement costs of their components. Herein, we present an algorithm that assesses the problem of handling the repair and replacement cost corresponding... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: axial compressor, Genetic Algorithm, Optimization, RANS analysis, recirculation channel, stall margin.
The present work performed a comprehensive investigation to find the effects of a dual-bleeding port recirculation channel on the aerodynamic performance of a single-stage transonic axial compressor, NASA Stage 37, and optimized the channel’s configuration to enhance the operating stability of the compressor. The compressor’s performance was examined using three parameters: The stall margin, adiabatic efficiency, and pressure ratio. Steady-state three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes analyses were performed to find the flow field and aerodynamic performance. The results showed that the addition of a bleeding channel increased the recirculation channel’s stabilizing effect compared to the single-bleeding channel. Three design variables were selected for optimization through a parametric study, which was carried out to examine the influences of six geometric parameters on the channel’s effectiveness. Surrogate-based design optimization was performed using the particle swarm op... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electric vehicles (EVs), multiagent games, optimized dispatching, prospect theory, RE algorithm.
With the implementation of the carbon neutral policy, the number of electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing. Thus, it is urgently needed to manage the charging and discharging behavior of EVs scientifically. In this paper, EVs are regarded as agents, and a multiagent cooperative optimization scheduling model based on Roth−Erev (RE) algorithm is proposed. The charging and discharging behaviors of EVs will influence each other. The charging and discharging strategy of one EV owner will affect the choice of others. Therefore, the RE algorithm is selected to obtain the optimal charging and discharging strategy of the EV group, with the utility function of the prospect theory proposed to describe EV owners’ different risk preferences. The utility function of the prospect theory has superior effectiveness in describing consumers’ utility. Finally, in the case of residential electricity, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified. Compared with that of random charging, this method red... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: assembly line, decision making, Industry 4.0, information flow.
Last year’s developments are characterized by a dramatic drop in customer demand leading to stiff competition and more challenges that each enterprise needs to cope with in a globalized market. Production in low-mix/high-volume batches is replaced with low-volume/high-variety production, which demands excessive information flow throughout production facilities. To cope with the excessive information flow, this production paradigm requires the integration of new advanced technology within production that enables the transformation of production towards smart production, i.e., towards Industry 4.0. The procedure that helps the decision-makers to select the most appropriate I4.0 technology to integrate within the current assembly line considering the expected outcomes of KPIs are not significantly been the subject of the research in the literature. Therefore, this research proposes a conceptual procedure that focus on the current state of the individual assembly line and proposes the tech... [more]

Keywords: dimensionless numbers, genetic algorithm (GA), gravitational search algorithm (GSA), grey wolf optimization (GWO), hysteresis, least square support vector machine (LSSVM), particle swarm optimization (PSO), physics-informed machine learning, water-alternating-gas (WAG).
In this study, we solve the challenge of predicting oil recovery factor (RF) in layered heterogeneous reservoirs after 1.5 pore volumes of water-, gas- or water-alternating-gas (WAG) injection. A dataset of ~2500 reservoir simulations is analyzed based on a Black Oil 2D Model with different combinations of reservoir heterogeneity, WAG hysteresis, gravity influence, mobility ratios and WAG ratios. In the first model MOD1, RF is correlated with one input (an effective WAG mobility ratio M*). Good correlation (Pearson coefficient −0.94), but with scatter, motivated a second model MOD2 using eight input parameters: water−oil and gas−oil mobility ratios, water−oil and gas−oil gravity numbers, a reservoir heterogeneity factor, two hysteresis parameters and water fraction. The two mobility ratios exhibited the strongest correlation with RF (Pearson coefficient −0.57 for gas-oil and −0.48 for water-oil). LSSVM was applied in MOD2 and trained using different optimizers: PSO, GA, GWO and GSA. A... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Energy Storage, European research projects, flexibility, Horizon 2020 Framework Programme, Optimization, Power-to-X, smart energy systems.
Europe stated the ambitious target of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 to combat climate change and meet the requirements imposed by the Paris Agreement, and renewable energy has proved to be a promising solution for the decarbonization of many sectors. Nonetheless, their aleatory nature leads to grid unbalances due to the difference between supply and demand. Storage solutions are needed, and electrofuels become a key factor in this context: they are fuels produced from electricity, which leads to carbon-neutral fuels if it originates from renewable sources. These can constitute a key solution to store the surplus energy and to decarbonize the so-called hard-to-abate sectors. Electrofuel production technologies have not yet been fully developed, and, in this context, extensive study of the state-of-the-art of existing projects can be very useful for researchers and developers. This work researches the European projects funded by the Horizon 2020 Programme regarding electrofuel producti... [more]

Keywords: cost-optimal method, energy saving, renewables, school retrofitting, sustainable schools.
In Italy in 2020, only 15.5% of school building heritage was retrofitted from an energy and environmental point of view. In this paper, the cost-optimal method was applied to two different school buildings belonging to the same Italian cold climate zone but characterized by different structural and technological solutions. The research aims at defining the cost-effective redevelopment solution among several ones proposed to apply to this building type. At the same time, this paper provides a critical analysis of the methodology applied, highlighting deficiencies related to a not proper evaluation of environmentally friendly retrofitting measures. In a cost-effective context, the main results show that the intervention on the heating system is more convenient than the retrofitting of the envelope. The energy saving is equal to about 35% for both considered schools. Among the different proposed requalification configurations, the adoption of PV (photovoltaic) electric generation is inclu... Keywords: energy storage system, genetic algorithm (GA), minimum electrical energy cost for the consumer, optimal home energy management strategy, plug-in electric vehicle, Solar Photovoltaic, time-of-use (TOU) tariffs.
It is well documented that both solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and electric vehicles (EVs) positively impact the global environment. However, the integration of high PV resources into distribution networks creates new challenges because of the uncertainty of PV power generation. Additionally, high power consumption during many EV charging operations at a certain time of the day can be stressful for the distribution network. Stresses on the distribution network influence higher electricity tariffs, which negatively impact consumers. Therefore, a home energy management system is one of the solutions to control electricity consumption to reduce electrical energy costs. In this paper, a meta-heuristic-based optimization of a home energy management strategy is presented with the goal of electrical energy cost minimization for the consumer under the time-of-use (TOU) tariffs. The proposed strategy manages the operations of the plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) and the energy storage system (ES... [more]

In the present study, the evaluation of potential improvement of the overall efficiency of a common PV panel, valorizing the heat extracted by a heat exchanger that is integrated on its back side, either into work using an endoreversible Carnot engine or into cold by using an endoreversible tri-thermal machine consisting of a heat-driven refrigeration machine operating between three temperature sources and sink (such as a liquid/gas absorption machine), was carried out. A simplified thermodynamic analysis of the PV/thermal collector shows that there are two optimal operating temperatures T˜h and Th* of the panels, which maximize either the thermal exergy or the overall exergy of the PV panel, respectively. The cold produced by the endoreversible tri-thermal machine during the operating conditions of the PV/thermal collector at T˜h is higher with a coefficient of performance (COP) of 0.24 thanks to the higher heat recovery potential. In the case of using the cold produced by a tri-therm... [more]

In this study, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and multi-objective genetic algorithm were used to obtain optimum parameters of the channels with frustum of a cone with better flow and heat transfer performance. Central composite face-centered design (CCF) was applied to the experimental design of the channel parameters, and on this basis, the response surface models were constructed. The sensitivity of the channel parameters was analyzed by Sobol’s method. The multi-objective optimization of the channel parameters was carried out with the goal of achieving maximum Nusselt number ratio (Nu/Nu0) and minimum friction coefficient ratio (f/f0). The results show that the root mean square errors (RSME) of the fitted response surface models are less than 0.25 and the determination coefficients (R2) are greater than 0.93; the models have high accuracy. Sobol’s method can quantitatively analyze the influence of the channel parameters on flow and heat transfer performance of the channels. When... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: differential power processing (DPP), flyback converter, integrated transformer, multi-winding, photovoltaic (PV), submodule.
In recent years, to increase the fuel efficiency of environment-friendly vehicles, a large volume of research is ongoing regarding applying photovoltaic (PV) systems. However, in PV systems, a power imbalance between submodules is common due to shading or pollution, and this degrades the power generation efficiency of the system. To solve this problem, various differential power processing (DPP) converters have been developed. In order to adopt the DPP converter to environment-friendly vehicles, the DPP converter must have a small volume, high efficiency, and high price competitiveness. In this regard, we propose a DPP converter with a single multi-winding transformer by integrating multiple transformers and secondary sides of the conventional flyback DPP converter. Since the proposed DPP converter can be applied to battery balancing circuits as well as photovoltaic systems, the proposed circuit is a valuable converter. In the PV system, the maximum output power of each submodule is 60... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: BIBC matrix, greedy algorithms, maintenance, power distribution faults, power-system reliability, power-system restoration, resilience.
When a meteorological disaster occurs and equipment becomes damaged, a significant amount of time is required to repair the damaged components as it is impossible to repair several components simultaneously. Therefore, the determination of repair priority is a significant aspect of a distribution system’s resilience. This study proposes a technique to identify the unserved areas of a radial distribution system based on the bus injection to the branch current (BIBC) matrix, as opposed to a complex optimization technique, for evaluating the repair priority determination strategy for all the possible disaster scenarios. Generally, most resilience metrics include the concept of duration; therefore, the strategy for resilience enhancement must optimize the recovery priority using an objective function that consists of the recovered capacity increment, rather than the recovered capacity. To verify the proposed method, in this paper, the resilience is evaluated under all the disaster scenario... [more]

Distortions of current and voltage waveforms from a sinusoidal shape are, not only a source of technical problems, but also have serious economic effects. Their occurrence is related to the common use of loads with nonlinear current-voltage characteristics. These are both high-power loads (most often power electronic switching devices supplying high-power drives), but also widely used low-power loads (power supplies, chargers, energy-saving light sources). The best way to eliminate these distortions is to use active power filters. The cost of these devices is relatively high. Therefore, scientists all over the world are conducting research aimed at developing techniques for the proper placement of these devices, in order to minimize their investment costs. The best solution to this problem is to use optimization techniques. This paper compares the methods and criteria used by the authors of publications dealing with this topic. The summary also indicates a possible direction for furthe... [more]

With the reform of the power system in China, investments in power grid projects across the whole power system are increasing. However, there are various objectives to achieve in the investment decision processes of power grid projects, so the rational investments of a grid project can be seen as a multi-objective optimization problem. Meanwhile, these issues have rarely been studied at home and abroad, and this paper will fill this gap. As a result, this study critically analyzed the application of a multi-objective optimization model to power grid investment. Firstly, the objective factors of grid investments were explored, which were quantified through quantitative methods. Secondly, based on the characteristics of power grid investment, a multi-objective optimization model was established, and the assumptions and constraints of the model were presented. Finally, NSGA-II was used for solving the multi-objective optimization model. The results show that: (1) Multi-objective optimizat... [more]

The main goal of this article is to build a decision model for an investment involving the addition of a CCS (Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage) installation in an existing conventional power plant. The application of CCS systems in coal and gas power plants involves large capital expenditures and an increase in operating costs. The lack of upgrade modernisation and environmentally friendly investments in this type of power plant generates the additional costs of the purchase of emission allowances. An analysis of the impact of the addition of a CCS installation to an existing coal power plant on the costs of electricity generation is presented. Based on the accessible technical and economic data, a concept has been framed and an original decision-making model has been developed for an investment consisting in constructing a CCS installation in an existing power plant. A novelty of the paper is the presented proprietary decision-making model in conditions of uncertainty using the real... [more]
Improved Optimal Control of Transient Power Sharing in Microgrid Using H-Infinity Controller with Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: ABC, artificial bee colony algorithm, droop control, H∞ optimal controller, microgrid, Optimization, Particle Swarm Optimization, power sharing.
The microgrid has two main steady-state modes: grid-connected mode and islanded mode. The microgrid needs a high-performance controller to reduce the overshoot value that affects the efficiency of the network. However, the high voltage value causes the inverter to stop. Thus, an improved power-sharing response to the transfer between these two modes must be insured. More important points to study in a microgrid are the current sharing and power (active or reactive) sharing, besides the match percentage of power sharing among parallel inverters and the overshoot of both active and reactive power. This article aims to optimize the power response in addition to voltage and frequency stability, in order to make this network’s performance more robust against external disturbance. This can be achieved through a self-tuning control method using an optimization algorithm. Here, the optimized droop control is provided by the H-infinity (H∞) method improved with the artificial bee colony algorit... [more]

Clean heating has not been widely applied in rural Chinese areas. Considering the abundance of solar energy resources, harvesting solar energy for heating can be an effective solution to the problem of space heating in most rural areas. As the disperse building distribution in rural areas makes it difficult to implement centralized heating on a large scale, deploying centralized−decentralized hybrid solar heating system can achieve the best result from both the technical and economic perspectives. Taking a virtual village in Tibet as an example, this paper explores how to obtain optimal design of centralized−decentralized hybrid solar heating system based on building clustering. The results show that: (1) Compared with the fully centralized system and fully decentralized system, the centralized−decentralized hybrid solar heating system in the studied case could achieve a life cycle cost (LCC) saving of 4.8% and 2.3%, respectively; (2) The LCC of centralized−decentralized hybrid solar h... In recent years, power systems have been moving from conventional power plants toward the integration of renewable energy sources (RES). This trend is taking shape in many developing economies, including in the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP). The integration of RES, however, stresses grid security and stability due to the variability and intermittency of the underlying renewable sources. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) have been identified as a possible solution to address the frequency control challenges in the WAPP Interconnected Transmission System (WAPPITS) in order to help to accommodate high levels of RES. This paper analyzes the application and effectiveness of BESS in providing primary frequency control reserves in the WAPPITS. The analyses are based on numerical simulations that were performed using an open-loop model based on historic frequency measurements from the WAPPITS. The simplified model provided a first-order analysis of the frequency control and state of charge... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: double-bridge channel, membraneless microfluidic fuel cell, mixing region, numerical model, Optimization.
In this work, a design optimization study was conducted to improve the performance of a membraneless microfluidic fuel cell with a double-bridge cross-section of the flow channel. Governing equations including Navier−Stokes, mass-transport, and Butler−Volmer equations were solved numerically to analyze the electrochemical phenomena and evaluate the performance of the fuel cells. Optimization was performed to maximize the peak power density using a genetic algorithm combined with a surrogate model constructed by radial basis neural network. Two sub-channel widths of the flow channel were selected as design variables for the optimization. As a result, a large increase in the inner channel width and a small decrease in the outer channel width effectively increased the peak power density of the MMFC. The optimal design increased the peak power density by 57.6% compared to the reference design.

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy retrofit, multistage optimization, net zero energy building, NSGA-II, retrofit, TOPSIS.
Climate change is one of the major problems of the planet. The atmosphere is overloaded with carbon dioxide caused by fossil fuels that are burned for energy. Almost 40 percent of the total energy worldwide is used by the building sector, which comes from non-renewable sources and contributes up to 30% of annual greenhouse gas emissions globally. The building sector in Iran accounts for 33.8% of Iran’s total energy usage. Within the building sector, the energy consumption of Iranian educational buildings is 2.5 times higher than educational buildings in developed countries. One of the most effective ways of reducing global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions is retrofitting existing buildings. This study aims to investigate whether a particular energy-optimized design under the present climate conditions would respond effectively to future climate change. This can help designers make a better decision on an optimal model, which can remain optimal over the years based on cli... [more]
