April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: combined heat and power (CHP), multi-objective optimization, organic Rankine cycle (ORC), system comparison, working fluid selection.
Cogeneration of heat and power systems based on the organic Rankine cycle (ORC-CHP) has been proven to be an effective way to utilize waste heat at medium and low temperatures. In this work, three ORC-CHP (combined heat and power based on organic Rankine cycle) systems are simulated and compared, including the SS (serial system), the CS (the condensation system), and the SS/CS. The multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is used to optimize the three systems respectively to achieve higher exergy efficiency and profit ratio of investment (PRI). The optimal thermal-economic performance is obtained. Twelve organic fluids are adopted to evaluate their performance as working fluids. The calculation results show that SS has the highest exergy efficiency, while SS/CS has the best economic performance. Compared with the highest exergy efficiency of SS and the best economic performance of SS/CS, CS will be the optimal solution considering these two objective functions. Under the optimal workin... Subject: Optimization
Keywords: charging flexibility, data analysis, electric vehicles, Optimization, smart charging, vehicle grid integration.
A successful transformation of the energy and transportation sector is one of the main targets for our society today. Battery electric vehicles can play a key role in future renewable-based energy supply systems because of their ability to store electrical power. Additionally, they provide significant charging flexibility due to the long parking durations. In this paper, we provide insights into the temporal and power-specific flexibility behavior of three different vehicle fleets. These fleets are pool vehicles of office employees, a public authority, and a logistics company. Several parameters, such as the average charging power per charging event or the average plug-in duration per charging event, are discussed. Additionally, we investigate different charging rates and their impact on the temporal flexibility of the charging events. The data analysis shows that the logistics site has the most homogeneous charging profile as well as high charging flexibility, in contrast to the offic... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: aggregator, data-driven models, demand response, energy flexibility, mixed-integer linear programming.
This paper presents a novel framework architecture for an online, real-time flexibility assessment and activation platform targeted at unlocking the flexibility potential of commercial buildings and smaller industrial sites, thereby enabling greater levels of renewable grid integration. Renewable integration targets in Europe of up to 40% of power generation from renewable sources by 2030 and over 90% by 2050 aim to decarbonize the electrical grid and increase electrification of transport, industry, and buildings. As renewable integration targets increase, participation in flexibility programs will be required from a much greater range of buildings and sites to balance grids hosting high levels of renewable generation. In this paper, an online implementation of a standardized flexibility assessment methodology, previously developed for offline contract negotiations between stakeholders, is modified to automate the assessment. The automated assessment is then linked to an aggregator-bas... [more]
Power Maximization and Turbulence Intensity Management through Axial Induction-Based Optimization and Efficient Static Turbine Deployment

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: artificial bee colony, axial induction, differential evolution, hexagonal layouts, Particle Swarm Optimization, regular layouts, turbulence intensity, wind plant power maximization.
Layout optimization is capable of increasing turbine density and reducing wake effects in wind plants. However, such optimized layouts do not guarantee fixed T-2-T distances in any direction and would be disadvantageous if reduction in computational costs due to turbine set-point updates is also a priority. Regular turbine layouts are considered basic because turbine coordinates can be determined intuitively without the application of any optimization algorithms. However, such layouts can be used to intentionally create directions of large T-2-T distances, hence, achieve the gains of standard/non-optimized operations in these directions, while also having close T-2-T distances in other directions from which the gains of optimized operations can be enjoyed. In this study, a regular hexagonal turbine layout is used to deploy turbines within a fixed area dimension, and a turbulence intensity-constrained axial induction-based plant-wide optimization is carried out using particle swarm, art... The World Energy Council, in its 2019 World Energy Scenarios Report, advised policymakers to identify innovative opportunities for the integration of renewable energy resources into existing electrical power systems to achieve a fast and affordable solution. However, large-scale industries with cogeneration units are facing problems in handling the higher penetration levels of intermittent renewable energies. This paper addresses large-size photovoltaic power integration problems and their optimal operation. This work considers the case of a chemical industry having both cogeneration power and solar photovoltaics. Here, a modified firefly algorithm and a hybrid power resource optimization solver are proposed. Multi-Period Fast Robust Optimization for Partial Distributed Generators (DGs) Providing Ancillary Services
Jian Zhang, Mingjian Cui, Yigang He.
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: ancillary services, CCP, distribution system, robust optimization, sequential SOCP.
Distributed generators providing auxiliary service are an important means of guaranteeing the safe and economic operation of a distribution system. In this paper, considering an energy storage system (ESS), switchable capacitor reactor (SCR), step voltage regulator (SVR), and a static VAR compensator (SVC), a two-stage multi-period hybrid integer second-order cone programming (SOCP) robust model with partial DGs providing auxiliary service is developed. If the conic relaxation is not exact, a sequential SOCP is formulated using convex−concave procedure (CCP) and cuts, which can be quickly solved. Moreover, the exact solution of the original problem can be recovered. Furthermore, in view of the shortcomings of the large computer storage capacity and slow computational rate for the column and constraint generation (CCG) method, a method direct iteratively solving the master and sub-problem is proposed. Increases to variables and constraints to solve the master problem are not needed. For... [more]
A Novel Method for Structural Lightweight Design with Topology Optimization
Hongjun Xue, Haiyang Yu, Xiaoyan Zhang, Qi Quan.
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: genetic algorithms, hybrid method, SIMP-GA, structural lightweight design, topology optimization.
Topological optimization is an innovative method to realize the lightweight design. This paper proposes a hybrid topology optimization method that combines the SIMP (solid isotropic material with penalization) method and genetic algorithm (GA), called the SIMP-GA method. In the method, SIMP is used to update the chromosomes, which can accelerate convergence. The filtering scheme in the SIMP method can filter unconnected elements to ensure the connectivity of the structure. We studied the influence of varying the filtering radius on the optimized structure. Simultaneously, in the SIMP-GA method, each element is regarded as a gene, which controls the population number to a certain extent, reduces the amount of calculation, and improves the calculation efficiency. The calculation of some typical examples proves that the SIMP-GA method can obtain a better solution than the gradient-based method. Compared with the conventional genetic algorithm and GA-BESO (Bi-directional Evolutionary Struc... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: air-gapped transformer, effective permeability, magnetic permeance, SCASA, supercapacitors, surge protection.
SCASA is a patented technique commercialized as a surge protector device (SPD) that adheres to UL-1449 test standards. Apart from the novel use of supercapacitors, SCASA design incorporates a coupled-inductor wound to a specially selected magnetic material of powdered-iron. In this study, we investigate the limitations of the present design under transient operation and elucidate ways to eliminate them with the use of air-gapped ferrite cores. In modelling the operation under 50 Hz AC and transient conditions, a permeance-based approach is used; in addition, non-ideal characteristics of the transformer core are emphasized and discussed with empirical validations. The experimental work was facilitated using a lightning surge simulator coupled with the 230 V AC utility mains; combinational surge-waveforms (6 kV/3 kA) defined by IEEE C62.41 standards were continuously injected into SPD prototypes during destructive testing. Such procedures substantiate the overall surge-endurance capabili... [more]
Photovoltaic Cleaning Optimization: A Simplified Theoretical Approach for Air to Water Generator (AWG) System Employment
Lucia Cattani, Paolo Cattani, Anna Magrini.
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: air water generator, atmospheric water condensation, panel cleaning optimization, photovoltaic cleaning.
Photovoltaic panel efficiency can be heavily affected by soiling, due to dust and other airborne particles, which can determine up to 50% of energy production loss. Generally, it is possible to reduce that impact by means of periodic cleaning, and one of the most efficient cleaning solutions is the use of demineralized water. As pauperization of traditional water sources is increasing, new technologies have been developed to obtain the needed water amount. Water extracted from the air using air to water generator (AWG) technology appears to be particularly suitable for panel cleaning, but its effective employment presents issues related to model selection, determining system size, and energy efficiency. To overcome such issues, the authors proposed a method to choose an AWG system for panel cleaning and to determine its size accordingly, based on a cleaning time optimization procedure and tailored to AWG peculiarities, with an aim to maximize energy production. In order to determine th... [more]

In this paper an optimization problem designed to calculate electric grid specific indicators to be used within model-based methodologies for the definition of alternative electricity market bidding zone configurations is designed. The approach integrates within the framework of a bidding zone review process aligned to the specifications of the Commission Regulation (EU) 2015/1222 (CACM) and Regulation (EU) 2019/943 of the European Parliament and of the Council (CEP). The calculated solution of the optimization provides locational marginal prices and allows to determine, outside the optimization problem, the power transfer distribution factors for critical elements. Both indicators can be used as inputs by specially designed clustering algorithms to identify model-based electricity market bidding zone configurations, as alternative to the current experience-based configurations. The novelty of the optimization problem studied in this paper consists in integrating the N-1 security crite... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: AFWA, fault analysis of secondary system of smart substation, H-mine, parameter optimization of association rules.
The fault data of the secondary system of smart substations hide some information that the association analysis algorithm can mine. The convergence speed of the Apriori algorithm and FP-growth algorithm is slow, and there is a lack of indicators to evaluate the correlation of association rules and the method to determine the parameter threshold. In this paper, the H-mine algorithm is used to realize the fast mining of fault data. The algorithm can traverse data faster by using the data structure of the H-struct. This paper also sets the lift and CF value to screen the association rules with good correlation. When setting the three key parameters of association analysis, namely, support threshold, confidence threshold, and lift threshold, an objective function composed of weighted average lift, CF value, and data coverage rate was selected, and the adaptive fireworks algorithm was used to optimize the parameters in the association analysis. In particular, the rule screening strategy is... [more]

Keywords: evolutionary computation, gaussian wake model, genetic algorithms, horns rev, multi-objective optimization, pareto front, wind farm area shape, wind farm layout optimization.
In recent years, wind farm layout optimization (WFLO) has been extendedly developed to address the minimization of turbine wake effects in a wind farm. Considering that increasing the degrees of freedom in the decision space can lead to more efficient solutions in an optimization problem, in this work the WFLO problem that grants total freedom to the wind farm area shape is addressed for the first time. We apply multi-objective optimization with the power output (PO) and the electricity cable length (CL) as objective functions in Horns Rev I (Denmark) via 13 different genetic algorithms: a traditionally used algorithm, a newly developed algorithm, and 11 hybridizations resulted from the two. Turbine wakes and their interactions in the wind farm are computed through the in-house Gaussian wake model. Results show that several of the new algorithms outperform NSGA-II. Length-unconstrained layouts provide up to 5.9% PO improvements against the baseline. When limited to 20 km long, the obta... [more]

Keywords: finite time thermodynamics, irreversible Atkinson cycle, multi-objective optimization, nonlinear variable specific heat, NSGA-II.
Considering nonlinear variation of working fluid’s specific heat with its temperature, finite-time thermodynamic theory is applied to analyze and optimize the characteristics of an irreversible Atkinson cycle. Through numerical calculations, performance relationships between cycle dimensionless power density versus compression ratio and dimensionless power density versus thermal efficiency are obtained, respectively. When the design parameters take certain specific values, the performance differences of reversible, endoreversible and irreversible Atkinson cycles are compared. The maximum specific volume ratio, maximum pressure ratio, and thermal efficiency under the conditions of the maximum power output and maximum power density are compared. Based on NSGA-II, the single-, bi-, tri-, and quadru-objective optimizations are performed when the compression ratio is used as the optimization variable, and the cycle dimensionless power output, thermal efficiency, dimensionless ecological fun... Subject: Optimization
Keywords: behavioral economics, energy dispatching strategy, household energy storage, multi-objective optimization.
Power systems optimization is generally subject to the compromise between performance and cost. The 2021 Texas grid outage illustrates the worldwide dangers for the regional-centralized power grid, with comparable advantages to safety and flexibility for the distributed energy system. The storage of household batteries helps balance grid load and increase system stability and flexibility. However, household storage battery is still not widely used today because of its high costs. Currently, research on increasing household battery storage applicability is focused largely on optimizing economic strategies, such as configuration, dispatching and subsidy policies, which rely substantially more on technologies and financial perspectives. Consumers are not ‘rational’ individuals, and non-economic incentives can affect their decisions without raising prices. This paper consequently proposes to encourage users to acquire household battery storage to increase efficiency of power dispatching an... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electric bus, energy management, energy storage system, fast-charging station, optimal sizing.
To relieve the peak operating power of the electric grid for an electric bus fast-charging station, this paper proposes to install a stationary energy storage system and introduces an optimization problem for obtaining the optimal sizes of an energy buffer. The charging power demands of the fast-charging station are uncertain due to arrival time of the electric bus and returned state of charge of the onboard energy storage system can be affected by actual traffic conditions, ambient temperature and other factors. The introduced optimization is formulated as a stochastic program, where the power matching equality of the total charging demands of connected electric buses is described as a chance constraint by denoting a satisfaction probability, then a stochastic supremum for the operating power of the electric grid is defined by actual data and the problem finally can be solved by convex programming. A case study for an existing electric bus fast-charging station in Beijing, China was u... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: bio-inspired optimization, demand-side management, holonic systems.
The transformation of energy grids towards smart grids is driven by numerous political, economic, and ecological goals. As part of this process, the centralized top-down architecture of energy grids changes towards increasingly decentralized structures. It is widely accepted that the challenges emerging from this transition threaten the resilient operation of energy grids. For instance, the volatility of renewable energy sources challenges the required balance between demand and supply; their distribution in the energy grid likewise complicates their coordination. Holarchies are a promising (systems-of-systems) architectural pattern for smart grids fostering fast isolation and self-sustained operation of subparts (so-called holons), as well as supporting dynamic reconfigurations of the grid’s structure. To leverage these properties to increase the resilience of smart grids, we propose a system model that combines a holonic architecture and locally available resources offered by prosume... [more]

Keywords: electricity consumption forecasting, Genetic Algorithm, grid search method, particle swarm optimization algorithm, seasonal exponential smoothing models.
Electricity consumption forecasting plays an important role in investment planning of electricity infrastructure, and in electricity production/generation and distribution. Accurate electricity consumption prediction over the mid/long term is of great interest to both practitioners and academics. Considering that monthly electricity consumption series usually show an obvious seasonal variation due to their inherent nature subject to temperature during the year, in this paper, seasonal exponential smoothing (SES) models were employed as the modeling technique, and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was applied to find a set of near-optimal smoothing parameters. Quantitative and comprehensive assessments were performed with two real-world electricity consumption datasets on the basis of prediction accuracy and computational cost. The experimental results indicated that (1) whether the accuracy measure or the elapsed time was considered, the PSO performed better than grid sea... [more]
Optimization of Costs and Self-Sufficiency for Roof Integrated Photovoltaic Technologies on Residential Buildings

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: building rooftops, collective self-consumption, cost-benefits, geographic information system, residential buildings, self-sufficiency, solar photovoltaic technologies.
It is common practice, in the production of photovoltaic energy to only use the south-exposed roof surface of a building, in order to achieve the maximum production of solar energy while lowering the costs of the energy and the solar technologies. However, using the south-exposed surface of a roof only allows a small quota of the energy demand to be covered. Roof surfaces oriented in other directions could also be used to better cover the energy load profile. The aim of this work is to investigate the benefits, in terms of costs, self-sufficiency and self-consumption, of roof integrated photovoltaic technologies on residential buildings with different orientations. A cost-optimal analysis has been carried out taking into account the economic incentives for a collective self-consumer configuration. It has emerged, from this analysis, that the better the orientation is, the higher the energy security and the lower the energy costs and those for the installation of photovoltaic technologi... The participation of household prosumers in wholesale electricity markets is very limited, considering the minimum participation limit imposed by most market participation rules. The generation capacity of households has been increasing since the installation of distributed generation from renewable sources in their facilities brings advantages for themselves and the system. Due to the growth of self-consumption, network operators have been putting aside the purchase of electricity from households, and there has been a reduction in the price of these transactions. This paper proposes an innovative model that uses the aggregation of households to reach the minimum limits of electricity volume needed to participate in the wholesale market. In this way, the Aggregator represents the community of households in market sales and purchases. An electricity transactions portfolio optimization model is proposed to enable the Aggregator reaching the decisions on which markets to participate to ma... [more]

Efficient and accurate estimations of unidentified parameters of photovoltaic (PV) models are essential to their simulation. This study suggests two new variants of the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) for identifying the nine parameters of the three-diode PV model. The first variant abbreviated as RWOA is based on integrating the WOA with ranking methods under a novel updating scheme to utilize each whale within the population as much as possible during the optimization process. The second variant, namely HWOA, has been based on employing a novel cyclic exploration-exploitation operator with the RWOA to promote its local and global search for averting stagnation into local minima and accelerating the convergence speed in the right direction of the near-optimal solution. Experimentally, RWOA and HWOA are validated on a solar cell (RTC France) and two PV modules (Photowatt-PWP201 and Kyocera KC200GT).
