March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: isomorphism detection, joint degree, mechanism representation, unified chain matrix, unified loop array
In this work, a new algorithm is proposed for a unique representation for simple and multiple joint planar kinematic chains (KCs) having any degree of freedom (DOF). This unique representation of KCs enhances the isomorphism detection during the structural synthesis process of KCs. First, a new concept of joint degree is generated for all joints of a given KC based on joint configuration. Then, a unified loop array (ULA) is obtained for each independent loop. Finally, a unified chain matrix (UCM) is established as a unique representation for a KC. Three examples are presented to illustrate the proposed algorithm procedures and to test its validity. The algorithm is applied to get a UCM for planar KCs having 7−10 links. As a result, a complete atlas database is introduced for 7−10-link non-isomorphic KCs with simple or/and multiple joints and their corresponding unified chain matrix.

Photovoltaic (PV) is a highly promising energy source because of its environment friendly property. However, there is an uncertainty present in the modeling of PV modules owing to varying irradiance and temperature. To solve such uncertainty, the fuzzy logic control-based intelligent maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method is observed to be more suitable as compared with conventional algorithms in PV systems. In this paper, an isolated PV system using a push pull converter with the fuzzy logic-based MPPT algorithm is presented. The proposed methodology optimizes the output power of PV modules and achieves isolation with high DC gain. The DC gain is inverted into a single phase AC through a closed loop fuzzy logic inverter with a low pass filter to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD). Dynamic simulations are developed in Matlab/Simulink by MathWorks under linear loads. The results show that the fuzzy logic algorithms of the proposed system efficiently track the MPPT and presen... Keywords: dean flow, microfluidics, micromixer, thermal, ultrasound
Micromixing is a key process in microfluidics technology. However, rapid and efficient fluid mixing is difficult to achieve inside the microchannels due to unfavourable laminar flow. Active micromixers employing ultrasound and thermal energy are effective in enhancing the micromixing process; however, integration of these energy sources within the devices is a non-trivial task. In this study, ultrasound and thermal energy have been extraneously applied at the upstream of the micromixer to significantly reduce fabrication complexity. A novel Dean micromixer was laser-fabricated to passively increase mixing performance and compared with T- and Y-micromixers at Reynolds numbers between 5 to 100. The micromixers had a relatively higher mixing index at lower Reynolds number, attributed to higher residence time. Dean micromixer exhibits higher mixing performance (about 27% better) than T- and Y-micromixers for 40 ≤ Re ≤ 100. Influence of ultrasound and heat on mixing is more significant at 5... [more]

The paper presents a comparison of two methods of manufacturing utility objects made of plastics, applied to the emerging immediate need in the field of quick provision of personal protective equipment for medical services. The traditional processing method, which is injection molding (IM), and a modern rapid prototyping method, which is fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printing, were compared in terms of unit costs and production possibilities at various timeframes. The paper presents the effects of launching two production processes of protective helmets (face shields) using the example of real cases implemented ad hoc during the epidemic development. The implementation of the protective helmet production project based on polyamide-6 processing showed the real possibilities of quickly launching the rapid production of protective equipment with the aid of mold injection technology.

Keywords: common-mode voltage (CMV), space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM), three-phase motor, two-level voltage source inverter
Aiming at the problem of large magnitude and high frequency of common-mode voltage (CMV) when space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) is used in a three-phase motor fed by a two-level voltage source inverter, a common-mode reduction SVPWM (CMRSVPWM) is studied. In this method, six new sectors are obtained by rotating six sectors of conventional SVPWM by 30°. In odd-numbered sectors, only three non-zero vectors with odd subscripts are used for synthesis, while in even-numbered sectors, only three non-zero vectors with even subscripts are used for synthesis. The actuation durations of three non-zero vectors in each switching period in each sector are given. Simulation and experimental results show that, compared with the conventional SVPWM, the CMV magnitude of CMRSVPWM is reduced by 66.67% and the CMV frequency of CMRSVPWM is reduced from the original switching frequency to the triple fundamental frequency. At the same time, the current, torque and speed of the motor are still good.

Keywords: electromagnetic force (EMF), foreign metal object, high-power, wireless power transfer (WPT)
Because of the noncontact structure of wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, foreign metal objects can easily enter into the coupling region—and often move under the action of electromagnetic force (EMF), instead of staying relatively static, which brings a difficult problem for foreign object detection technology. In this paper, we investigate the motion state of foreign metal objects with different properties under the action of electromagnetic force in the coupling space of WPT system. The equivalent model of the circuit parameters with the intervention of foreign metal objects and the differential equations for the motion of foreign metal objects are derived. Combined with finite-element simulation calculations, the motion characteristic of ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic metals under EMF was analyzed. The results show that, due to the size and properties of the metal, non-ferromagnetic foreign metal objects have four states: vibration, suspension, static and flying out. The f... [more]

Hydrogen is largely considered as an attractive additive fuel for hydrocarbons and alcohol-fueled engines. Nevertheless, a complete understanding of the interactions between blended fuel mechanisms under oxidative conditions at low initial temperature is still lacking. This study is devoted to the numerical investigation of the laminar burning velocity of hydrogen−hydrocarbon and hydrogen−alcohol fuels under several compositions. Estimations were compared with experimental data reported in the current literature. Additionally, the effects of hydrogen addition on engine performance, NOX, and other pollutant emissions of the mentioned fuels have been thermodynamically analyzed. From the study, it has been observed that the laminar burning velocity of the fuel mixtures increased with increasing hydrogen fractions and the peak value shifted to richer conditions. Besides, hydrogen fraction was found to increase the adiabatic flame temperatures eventually favoring the NOX formation for all f... [more]

Keywords: asymmetric winding, efficiency improvement, electric drive system, multiphase motor, PMSM
Multiphase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are widely utilized in high power and high reliability electric propulsion systems. In electric propulsion systems, the motor may work at a low efficiency area for a long time, which increases energy consumption and reduces cruise range. In order to improve motor efficiency, this paper proposes a multiphase motor structure. The stator winding of proposed motor consists of three independent windings that have different rated speed and torque. In this paper, winding match mode, operation characteristic and efficiency characteristic are analyzed, and a torque distribution strategy with optimal efficiency is given. The results show that in propeller load such as electric aircrafts and ships, the proposed motor can reduce motor total loss and temperature rise in a drive cycle, which improves system efficiency, reliability and fault tolerance performance.

Keywords: cascaded H-bridges (CHB) multilevel inverters (MLI), Selective Harmonics Elimination (SHE), Selective Harmonics Mitigation (SHM), Total Harmonic Distortion (THD)
This paper considers cascaded H-bridges multilevel inverters with 2 n dc sources, n integer, n > 0 and proposes a new general formula to compute those 2 n switching angles capable of eliminating n + 1 harmonics and their respective multiples from the output voltage waveform. The proposed procedure uses only scalar products and avoids linear systems, therefore it has a low computational cost. Computed angles do not depend on modulation index, moreover, voltage sources vary linearly. A mathematical proof is given to validate the formula. Three-phase implementations eliminate or mitigate a significant amount of low order harmonics, thus resulting in very low total harmonic distortion. The proposed formula has been experimentally validated using a single-phase nine-level cascaded H-bridge inverter prototype, resulting in a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of 5.59%; the first not-mitigated harmonic is the 17th.

This study evaluated the insulation resistance characteristics of TFR-8 (Tray Frame Retardant power cable for fire service) and VCTF (Light PVC Sheathed Circular Cord) cables under external flame, over-current, and accelerated degradation tests. In the accelerated degradation test of the cable, aging times of 10, 20, 30, and 40 years were tested according to a temperature derived using the Arrhenius equation. The insulation resistance of the TFR-8 cables was reduced from a maximum of 7.5 T ohm to 0.008 T ohm during the flame contact and recovered to its original state after cooling. However, dielectric breakdown occurred in the VCTF cable during flame contact and the cable did not return to its original state, even after cooling. In the forced convection oven test, the insulation resistance of the cable was reduced at 160 °C, whereas the insulation resistance of the cable was reduced at 125 °C in the over-current test. This result implied that the over-current had a greater impact than... [more]

Keywords: bi-direction, constant output voltage, multiple stages, wireless power transfer
For the application of wireless power transfer (WPT) technology in a robot (like the snake robot), the power is supposed to be transferred to each device across multiple robot joints. This paper proposes a multi-stage bi-directional WPT (MB-WPT) system that not only provides power to multiple loads but also increases the power transfer distance. Besides, the last stage can charge for the preceding stages by reverse power transfer. The constant output voltage can be achieved whether the power is transmitted in a forward or reverse direction, and different output voltages for each stage can be achieved to satisfy the respective voltage requirement through the parameter design method. The validity of the theoretical analysis and the feasibility of the system are verified by experiments.

In recent years, the three-level T-Type inverter has been considered the best choice for many low and medium power applications. Nevertheless, this topology is known as a buck converter. Therefore, in this paper, a new topology incorporating the dc-link type quasi-switched boost network with the traditional three-level T-type inverter is proposed to overcome the limit of traditional three-level T-Type inverter. The space vector pulse width modulation scheme is considered to control this topology, which provides some benefits such as enhancing modulation index and reducing the magnitude of common-mode voltage. For this scheme, the zero, medium, and large vectors are utilized to generate the output voltage. The shoot-through state which is adopted by turning on all power switches of inverter leg is inserted into zero vector to boost the dc-link voltage. As a result, there is no distortion at the output waveform. The control signal of intermediate network power switches is also detailed t... [more]

The use of compensation networks increases the power transfer capability of inductive power transfer (IPT) systems in the battery charging process of electric vehicles (EVs). Among the proposed topologies, the Series-Series (SS) and the LCC networks are currently in widespread use in wireless battery chargers based on IPT systems. This paper focuses on the study of the behavior of both compensation topologies when they are detuned due to the tolerances of their components. To compare their performances, a Monte-Carlo analysis was carried out using Simulink and MATLAB. The tolerance values, assigned independently to each component, fall within a [ − 20 , 20] % range according to a normal distribution. Histograms and scatter plots were used for comparison purposes. The analysis reveals that the LCC network allows a tighter control over the currents that flow through the magnetic coupler coils. Moreover, it was found that the increments in those currents can be limited to some exten... [more]

To study the evolution of acoustic emission (AE) parameters and the differences in the fracturing and failure process of rocks under different loading modes, AE signals of marble were detected during uniaxial compression tests (UCTs), direct tensile tests (DTTs) and indirect tensile tests (ITTs) in this paper. Then, the temporal and spatial evolution of the AE parameters and damage development of rock under different loading modes were analyzed. The results showed that the sequence of total AE events and AE counts under different loading modes was UCT > DTT > ITT. In the DTT and ITT, the energy release of AE signals was concentrated at the peak stress and weakened rapidly afterward, whereas in the UCT, there were still a large number of AE signals accompanied by violent AE energy release during the postpeak stage. The generation mechanism of AE sources in rock and the corresponding failure modes were different under different loading modes. In the UCT, the multiple cleavage fractures w... [more]

The maximum spatial-average magnetic field strength in the driver’s body was increased by 11% in the CFRP vehicle. It was 2.25 times larger than the reference levels (RL) prescribed in the International Commission of Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines in 2010. In addition, we found that the in situ electric field computed by the line- and volume-averaging methods were stable if the... [more]

If electric vehicles have to be truly sustainable, it is essential to charge them from sustainable sources of electricity, such as solar or wind energy. In this paper, the design of solar powered e-bike charging station that provides AC, DC and wireless charging of e-bikes is investigated. The charging station has integrated battery storage that enables for both grid-connected and off-grid operation. The DC charging uses the DC power from the photovoltaic panels directly for charging the e-bike battery without the use of an AC charging adapter. For the wireless charging, the e-bike can be charged through inductive power transfer via the bike kickstand (receiver) and a specially designed tile (transmitter) at the charging station, which provides maximum convenience to the user.

This study aimed to establish an automatic sewing process for garment production according to textile properties. An automatic feeding system and a self-made template were introduced to an industrial sewing machine. Two types of stitches were performed on fabrics with various physical properties and surface roughness using this automatic sewing machine. The appearance, stitch length and width, seam strength, and seam efficiency were evaluated according to the sewing conditions, such as presser height and sewing speed. In addition, the correlation between textile properties, sewing conditions, and sewability was analyzed to derive a regression equation for sewability. The evaluation showed no difference in the lock stitch condition. On the other hand, under the zigzag stitch condition, the stitch width differed according to the presser height, which also affected the seam structure. The optimal presser height for each fabric was derived from the experimental results. In terms of the sew... [more]

Wireless power transfer with multiple transmitters can have several advantages, including more robustness against misalignment and extending the mobility and range of the receiver(s). In this work, the efficiency maximization problem is analytically solved for a capacitive wireless power transfer system with multiple coupled transmitters and a single receiver. It is found that the system efficiency can be increased by adding more transmitters. Moreover, it is proven that the cross-coupling between the transmitters can be eliminated by adding shunt susceptances at the input ports. Optimal values for the input currents and receiver load are determined to achieve maximum efficiency. As well the optimal load, the optimal input currents and the maximum efficiency are independent on the cross-coupling. By impedance-matching the internal conductances of the generators, the maximum-efficiency solution also becomes the one that provides the maximum output power. Finally, by expressing each tran... In this paper, the Novel Immune Algorithm (NIA) is proposed for an optimal design of electrical machines. By coupling the conventional Immune Algorithm and Steepest Descent Method, the NIA can perform fast and exact convergence to both global solutions and local solutions. Specifically, the concept of an antibody radius is newly introduced to improve the ability to navigate full areas effectively and to find new peaks by excluding already searched areas. The validity of the NIA is confirmed by mathematical test functions with complex objective function regions. The NIA is applied to an optimal design of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor for fuel cell electric vehicles and to derive an optimum design with diminished torque ripple.

Intermittent power generated from renewable distributed energy resource (DER) can create voltage stability problems in the system during peak power production in the low demand period. Thus, the existing standard for operation and management of the distribution system limits the penetration level of the DER and the amount of load in a power system. In this standard, the hosting capacity of the DER is limited to each feeder at a level where the voltage problem does not occur. South Korea applied this standard, thereby making it hard to achieve its DER target. However, by analyzing the voltage stability of an integrated system, the hosting capacity of DER can be increased. Therefore, in this study, the maximum hosting capacity of DER is determined by analyzing an integrated transmission and distribution system. Moreover, the fast voltage stability index (FVSI) is used to verify the determined hosting capacity of DER. For this, the existing interconnection standard of DER at a feeder, dis... [more]

In this study, a novel system named the third-generation wireless in-wheel motor (WIWM-3), which has a dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) system, is developed. It can extend the cruise range, which is one of the key specifications of electric vehicles. DWPT also reduces CO2 emission as the driving resistance is reduced due to light weight of the batteries. In this study, CO2 emission by an internal combustion vehicle, a long range drivable electric vehicle with the same cruise range, and an electric vehicle with WIWM-3 equipped with the DWPT system are analyzed using actual measurement data and calculated data based on actual measurement or specification data. A WPT system with WIWM-3 achieves 92.5% DC-to-DC efficiency as indicated by an actual measurement at the nominal position. Thus, the electric vehicle with DWPT can reduce up to 62% of CO2 emission in internal combustion vehicles, and the long-range drivable vehicle emits 17% more CO2 than the electric vehicle with DWPT. Keywords: asymmetric structure, current source rectifier, space vector pulse width modulation, voltage and current stress
This paper presents a novel three-phase current source rectifier (CSR) for AC/DC step-down voltage conversion to reduce voltage and current stress. The proposed converter features an asymmetrical connection between upper and lower arms compared with conventional CSRs, but has the same number of devices. With the proposed asymmetrical structure and modified space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) scheme, half of transistors only need to withstand half of the line-to-line voltage rather than the full line-to-line voltage, and its DC link current can be shared by multiple switches in freewheeling periods. Therefore, it is able to bring about a significant reduction in voltage and current stress, allowing for an improvement in the converter without additional cost. The topological structure, operation principles, and comparative analysis are specifically presented. Finally, an experimental prototype is built up to verify the performance of the proposed converter.
