Keywords: borehole thermal parameters, interrupted power input, measuring outputs, thermal response test (TRT)
The quality of measuring datasets of the thermal response test (TRT) significantly influences the interpretation of borehole thermal parameters (BTP). A thermal response test with an unstable power input may induce an unacceptable error in the estimation of the borehole thermal parameters. This paper proposes a novel approach to treat the dataset with interrupted power input. In this approach, the test records were segmented into several subsections with a constant time interval of 100 min, 60 min, and 30 min, separately. The quality of each data section was assessed and analyzed. Then, two algorithms, including the continuous algorithm and semi-superposition algorithm, were developed. The results estimated by the linear source model (LSM) were compared with one Thermal response test datasets with a stable power input at the same testing site. It shows that the effects of power interruption during the test can be effectively mitigated by deploying both the continuous and semi-superposi... [more]

Keywords: power supply method, single wire power transfer, wireless sensor networks
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have broad application prospects due to having the characteristics of low power, low cost, wide distribution and self-organization. At present, most the WSNs are battery powered, but batteries must be changed frequently in this method. If the changes are not on time, the energy of sensors will be insufficient, leading to node faults or even networks interruptions. In order to solve the problem of poor power supply reliability in WSNs, a novel power supply method, the single-wire power transfer method, is utilized in this paper. This method uses only one wire to connect source and load. According to the characteristics of WSNs, a single-wire power transfer system for WSNs was designed. The characteristics of directivity and multi-loads were analyzed by simulations and experiments to verify the feasibility of this method. The results show that the total efficiency of the multi-load system can reach more than 70% and there is no directivity. Additionally, t... [more]

Keywords: detuning, nonlinear parity-time symmetry (NPTS), wireless power transfer (WPT)
The nonlinear parity-time-symmetric wireless power transfer (NPTS-WPT) system is more robust against transfer distance than the traditional WPT system. Current studies mainly focus on the situation in which the transmitter (Tx) and the receiver (Rx) are completely matched. Our study focuses on the transfer characteristics of the NPTS-WPT system under detuning between the Tx and the Rx. First, the mathematical model of the detuned system is established, and then the model is solved using Shengjin’s formula. Then, the exact analytical solutions for the operating frequency, the amplification factor of the operational amplifier (OP Amp) and the transfer efficiency at detuning are obtained. It was noted, for the first time, that even though the Tx and the Rx were completely matched, a frequency jump could occur when the distance between the Tx and Rx coils slowly changed. Our study found that when the degree of detuning of the system changed, the operating frequency of the system could jump... [more]

Keywords: detent force reduction, finite element analysis, linear electric actuators, linear hybrid reluctance actuators, linear switched reluctance actuators, machine design, permanent magnets
In this paper, a novel two-phase linear hybrid reluctance actuator with the double-sided segmented stator, made of laminated U cores, and an interior mover with permanent magnets is proposed. The permanent magnets are disposed of in a way that increases the thrust force of a double-sided linear switched reluctance actuator of the same size. To achieve this objective, each phase of the actuator is powered by a single H-bridge inverter. To reduce the detent force, the upper and the lower stator were shifted. Finite element analysis was used to demonstrate that the proposed actuator has a high force density with low detent force. In addition, a comparative study between the proposed linear hybrid reluctance actuator, linear switched reluctance, and linear permanent magnet actuators of the same size was performed. Finally, experimental tests carried out in a prototype confirmed the goals of the proposed actuator.

Keywords: inductive coupling, optimal load, power gain, resonant, single-input multiple-output, wireless power transfer
This paper analyzes a resonant inductive wireless power transfer link using a single transmitter and multiple receivers. The link is described as an (N+1)−port network and the problem of efficiency maximization is formulated as a generalized eigenvalue problem. It is shown that the desired solution can be derived through simple algebraic operations on the impedance matrix of the link. The analytical expressions of the loads and the generator impedances that maximize the efficiency are derived and discussed. It is demonstrated that the maximum realizable efficiency of the link does not depend on the coupling among the receivers that can be always compensated. Circuital simulation results validating the presented theory are reported and discussed.

The main objective of this work revolves around the design of second order sliding mode controllers (SOSMC) based on the super twisting algorithm (STA) for asynchronous permanent magnet motor (PMSM) fed by a direct matrix converter (DMC), in order to improve the effectiveness of the considered drive system. The SOSMC was selected to minimize the chattering phenomenon caused by the conventional sliding mode controller (SMC), as well to decrease the level of total harmonic distortion (THD) produced by the drive system. In addition, the literature has taken a great interest in the STA due to its robustness to modeling errors and to external disturbances. Furthermore, due to its low conduction losses, the space vector approach was designated as a switching law to control the DMC. In addition, the topology and design method of the damped passive filter, which allows improvement of the waveform and attenuation of the harmonics of the input current, have been detailed. Finally, to discover th... [more]

Keywords: eddy current loss, FEA, IPMSM, irreversible demagnetization, permanent magnet, thermal equivalent circuit analysis
We designed and analyzed an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) to prevent irreversible demagnetization of the permanent magnets (PMs). Irreversible demagnetization of NdFeB PMs mainly occurs due to high temperature, which should thus be minimized. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the eddy current loss in the PM through optimal design. The shape of the rotor core was optimized using finite element analysis (FEA) and response surface methodology. Three-dimensional (3-D) FEA is required for accurate computation of the eddy current loss, but there is huge time, effort, and cost consumption. Therefore, a method is proposed for indirectly calculating the eddy current loss of PMs using 2-D FEA. A thermal equivalent circuit analysis was used to calculate the PM temperature of the optimized model. For the thermal analysis, the copper loss, core loss, and eddy current loss in PMs were estimated and applied as a heat source. Based on the results, we confirmed the stability of... [more]

Three-phase, four-wire split capacitor inverters are currently employed in many applications, such as photovoltaic systems, battery chargers for electric vehicles, active power filters, and, in general, in all grid-tied applications that deal with possible grid voltage and/or current unbalances. This paper provides a comprehensive evaluation of the capacitor-switching voltage ripple and dc-link switching voltage ripple for the three-phase, four-wire, split capacitor inverters. Specifically, analytical formulations of the peak-to-peak and rms values of the voltage ripples are originally pointed out in this paper and determined in the case of balanced three-phase and unbalanced (two-phase and single-phase) output (ac) currents. The obtained results can help in designing the considered inverter and sizing of the dc-link capacitors. Reference is made to the sinusoidal PWM modulation and sinusoidal three-phase output currents with an almost unity power factor, representing a grid-connected... [more]

Keywords: adaptive control, interior permanent magnet motors, maximum torque per ampere, sensorless control
Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) efficiency can be improved by using maximum torque per ampere control (MTPA). MTPA control utilizes both alignment and reluctance torques and usually requires information about the magnetization map of the electrical machine. This paper proposes an adaptive MTPA algorithm for sensorless control systems of IPMSM drives, which is applicable in industrial and commercial drives. This algorithm enhances conventional control schemes, where the output of the speed controller is the commanded stator current and the direct current is calculated using an MTPA equation; therefore, it can be easily implemented in the previously developed drives. The proposed algorithm does not use any motor parameters for the calculation of the MTPA trajectory, which is important for systems operating in changing environmental conditions, because motor inductances and flux linkage strongly depend on the stator current and the rotor temperature, respectively. Keywords: efficiency analysis, PMSM drive, propulsion inverter, SiC inverter
This paper suggests the reasonable switching frequency determination method for achieving highest efficiency of the railway propulsion system consisting the silicon carbide (SiC) inverter and permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The SiC power device allows increasing the switching frequency of the inverter because it has the small switching power loss. The total efficiency is taken into account for determining the switching frequency of SiC inverter in this paper. In the efficiency analysis of SiC inverter and PMSM, the PMSM drive control is considered with the hybrid switching method combined the synchronous PWM and asynchronous PWM. The result of the analysis shows the efficiency curve of propulsion system depending on the switching frequency. The switching frequency having the minimum power loss of propulsion system is selected based on the extracted power loss curve.

Keywords: axial permanent magnet coupling (APMC), eddy current, finite element method (FEM), lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN), thermal analysis
Thermal analysis is exceptionally important for operation safety of axial permanent magnet couplings (APMCs). Combining a finite element method (FEM) with a lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) is an effective yet simple thermal analysis strategy for an APMC that is developed in this paper. Also, some assumptions and key considerations are firstly given before analysis. The loss, as well as the magnetic field distribution of the conductor sheet (CS) can be accurately calculated through FEM. Then, the loss treated as source node loss is introduced into the LPTN model to obtain the temperature results of APMCs, where adjusting conductivity of the CS is a necessary and significant link to complete an iterative calculation process. Compared with experiment results, this thermal analysis strategy has good consistency. In addition, a limiting and safe slip speed can be determined based on the demagnetization temperature permanent magnet (PM).

This paper proposes an improved Predictive Torque Control (PTC) of a PMSM based on the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) for smooth torque operation in Electric Bus applications (EBs). The embedded GWO is used to resolve the torque tracking tasks with minimal oscillations in running at the low speed of PMSM drives. The new PTC algorithm can successfully ensure the smooth time evolution of the torque and the speed. The heat loss and cooling modes of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) directly affect the its temperature rise. The accurate evaluation and prediction of stator winding temperature is of great significance to the safety and reliability of PMSMs. In order to study the influencing factors of stator winding temperature and prevent motor insulation ageing, insulation burning, permanent magnet demagnetization and other faults caused by high stator winding temperature, we propose a computer model for PMSM temperature prediction. Ambient temperature, coolant temperature, direct-axis voltage, quadrature-axis voltage, motor speed, torque, direct-axis current, quadrature-axis current, permanent magnet surface temperature, stator yoke temperature, and stator tooth temperature are taken as the input, while the stator winding temperature is taken as the output. A deep neural network (DNN) model for PMSM temperature prediction was constructed. The experimental results showed the prediction... [more]

This paper presents an original method of power loss validation in medium-voltage SiC MOSFET (metal−oxide−semiconductor field-effect transistor) modules of a three-phase inverter. The base of this method is a correct description of the on-state performance of the diodes and the transistors in a PWM (pulse width modulation)-controlled inverter phase leg. Combined electro-thermal calculations are applied to precisely estimate the losses in the power devices and then, to find the suitable circuit parameters of a test circuit to emulate these conditions. A simple square-wave-controlled half-bridge with an inductive load enables the electrical and thermal stresses comparable to these in the inverter, and moreover, provided equations that confirmed the possibility of balancing the load between the diodes and the transistors. The circuit with 3.3 kV SiC MOSFETs was tested to verify the impact of selected parameters on power losses with the main focus on duty ratio. The same module was applied... [more]

Computations of quasi-dynamic electromagnetic field of induction machines using the complex magnetic vector potential require the use of the so-called effective magnetization curves, i.e., such in which the magnetic permeability is proportional to the amplitudes of magnetic flux density B or magnetic field strength H, not their instantaneous values. There are several definitions of that parameter mentioned in the literature provided for the case when B or H are monoharmonic. In this paper, seven different methods of determining the effective magnetization curves are compared in relation to the use of a field-circuit multi-harmonic model of an induction machine. The accuracy of each method was assessed by computing the performance characteristics of a solid-rotor induction machine. One new definition of the effective permeability was also introduced, being a function of multiple variables dependent on amplitudes of all the harmonics considered. The analyses demonstrated that the best pr... [more]

Keywords: can loss, canned electrical motor, eddy current, permanent magnet motor, shielding effect
Due to use of the metallic cans in the air gap, the electromagnetic shielding effect is formed, which is the prominent characteristic of the canned motor. In the flux field, eddy current induction occurs on both cans that thus affects the characteristic of the air gap flux field, and generates a loss that is the highest loss of the canned motor. In this paper, a combination method is proposed and stressed to analyze the shielding effect, based on a typical canned permanent magnet synchronous motor. First, the dq vector decomposition of the eddy current is studied. Second, the effect of the load angle on the loss distribution is studied. Finally, compared with the ordinary motor, the feature of can loss due to rotor speed and conductivity variation is shown. The three-dimensional finite element method is adopted, considering the end effect.

Analysis of natural fractures is essential for understanding the heterogeneity of basement reservoirs with carbonate rocks since natural fractures significantly control key attributes such as porosity and permeability. Based on the observations and analyses of outcrops, cores, borehole image logs, and thin sections from the Mesoproterozoic to Lower Paleozoic in the Jizhong Sub-Basin, natural fractures are found to be abundant in genetic types (tectonic, pressure-solution, and dissolution) in these reservoirs. Tectonic fractures are dominant in such reservoirs, and lithology, mechanical stratigraphy, and faults are major influencing factors for the development of fractures. Dolostones with higher dolomite content are more likely to have tectonic fractures than limestones with higher calcite content. Most tectonic fractures are developed inside mechanical units and terminate at the unit interface at nearly perpendicular or high angles. Also, where a thinner mechanical unit is observed, t... In the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), the DC bus voltage fluctuates up and down under the influence of the load and power grid, which greatly affects the safe and reliable work of PMSG. In order to suppress the wide range fluctuation of DC bus voltage under disturbance and enhance its anti-disturbance performance, an optimized DC bus voltage control strategy is proposed by using the improved linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) in the voltage outer loop. By considering factors, such as load disturbance and grid voltage mutation as the total disturbance of the system, the improved reduced-order linear expansion state observer (RLSEO) is used to estimate and compensate the total disturbance, which greatly improves the stability of DC bus voltage. Firstly, the mathematical model of grid-side converter is established. On this basis, the LADRC control based on RLESO is designed, which reduces the phase lag of the linear extended state observer (LESO) and enhan... [more]

Gas-wetting alteration is a versatile and effective approach for alleviating liquid-blockage that occurs when the wellbore pressure of a gas-condensate reservoir drops below the dew point. Fluorochemicals are of growing interest in gas-wetting alteration because of their high density of fluorine groups and thermal stability, which can change the reservoir wettability into more favorable conditions for liquids. This review aims to integrate the overlapping research between the current knowledge in organic chemistry and enhanced oil and gas recovery. The difference between wettability alteration and gas-wetting alteration is illustrated, and the methods used to evaluate gas-wetting are summarized. Recent advances in the applications of fluorochemicals for gas-wetting alteration are highlighted. The mechanisms of self-assembling adsorption layers formed by fluorochemicals with different surface morphologies are also reviewed. The factors that affect the gas-wetting performance of fluoroch... Passenger and freight trains must, for safety reasons, comply with several formal navigation requirements, particularly those that concern the minimum acceptable accuracy for determining their position. Depending on the type of task performed by the train (positioning a vehicle on a route, stopping at a turnout, stopping at a platform, monitoring the movement of rolling stock, etc.), the train must have positioning systems that can determine its position with sufficient accuracy (1−10 m, p = 0.95) to perform the tasks in question. In this paper, the lattice Boltzmann pseudo-potential model coupled the Carnahan−Starling (C-S) equation of state and Li’s force scheme are used to study the collapse process of cavitation bubbles near the concave wall. It mainly includes the collapse process of the single and double cavitation bubbles in the near-wall region. Studies have shown that the collapse velocity of a single cavitation bubble becomes slower as the additional pressure reduces, and the velocity of the micro-jet also decreases accordingly. Moreover, the second collapse of the cavitation bubble cannot be found if the additional pressure reduces further. When the cavitation bubble is located in different angles with vertical direction, its collapse direction is always perpendicular to the wall. If the double cavitation bubbles are arranged vertically, the collapse process of the upper bubble will be quicker, as the relative distance increases. When the relative distance between the bubbles is large enough, no secon... [more]

Direct lightning strikes on overhead phase conductors result in high overvoltage stress on the medium voltage (MV) terminals of pole-mounted transformers, which may cause considerable damage. Therefore, introducing an efficient protection strategy would be a remedy for alleviating such undesirable damages. This paper investigates the optimized protection of MV transformers against direct lightning strikes on the phase conductors. To this end, first, the impacts of grounding densities (number of grounded intermediate poles between every two successive transformer poles) on the probability of overvoltage stress on transformer terminals are investigated. Then, the implications of guy wire, as a supporting device for ungrounded intermediate poles, on reducing the overvoltage stress on transformers, are studied. Finally, the role of a surge arrester in mitigating the overvoltage stress of non-surge-arrester-protected transformer poles is scrutinized. The investigations are conducted on a sa... [more]
