Unsteady Characteristics of Forward Multi-Wing Centrifugal Fan at Low Flow Rate
December 9, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: centrifugal fan, frequency spectrum, large eddy simulation, pressure fluctuation, unsteady flow
The unsteady flow characteristics of a forward multi-wing centrifugal fan under a low flow rate are studied using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. This paper emphasizes the eddy current distribution in terms of the Q criterion method, as well as pressure fluctuation, frequency spectrum, and kinetic energy spectrum analysis of internal monitoring points in a forward multi-wing centrifugal fan. The numerical results show that abnormal eddies mainly appear at the volute outlet and near the volute tongue, boundary layer separation occurs near the suction surface of the blade, and shedding eddies appear at the trailing edge of the blade with the time evolution. The unsteady flow characteristics of a forward multi-wing centrifugal fan at a small flow rate provide significant physical insight into understanding the internal flow law.

Numerical Analysis of Two-Phase Flow in the Cavitation Process of a Waterjet Propulsion Pump System
December 9, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cavitation, numerical simulation, pump, two-phase flow, waterjet propulsion system
The waterjet propulsion system has been widely used in the military and civil fields because of its advantages of in terms of high efficiency and energy savings. In order to study the three-dimensional cavitation flow in the waterjet propulsion pump, the cavitation process of the waterjet propulsion pump was simulated numerically using the Zwart−Gerber−Belamri cavitation model and the RNG (Renormalization Group) k-ε model. The simulation results of cavitation on the waterjet propulsion pump and pump system show that, in the initial stage of cavitation, vapors first collect on the leading edge of the suction surface of the blade near the rim of the impeller. As the total pressure at the impeller inlet decreases, the cavitation region expands toward the trailing edge and the vapor fraction volume gradually increases. In order to simulate the cavitation state of the waterjet propulsion pump under the actual working conditions, a numerical simulation of the entire waterjet propulsion pump... [more]

Numerical Investigation on the Mechanism of Double-Volute Balancing Radial Hydraulic Force on the Centrifugal Pump
December 9, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: centrifugal pump, double-volute, radial hydraulic force, steady pressure distribution, transient pressure variation
Double-volute is an effective technique to reduce radial hydraulic force on the centrifugal pump and thereby mitigate the pump-casing vibration induced by unsteady flow characteristics. The mechanism of the double-volute structure balancing radial force on the impeller and volute was investigated on the basis of volute cross-sections by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method. The tested performances and simulated inner-flow characteristics of two pumps with single-volute and double-volute were compared in this paper. The performance-test results verify the veracity of CFD method and illustrate that double-volute pump has some losses in terms of pump head and operation efficiency. The numerical simulations reveal that double-volute pump has smaller radial-force magnitude than single-volute pump on the abnormal conditions. Steady pressure field and transient pressure variations of pumps were explored to account for radial-force characteristics of double-volute pump. Compared wit... [more]

Modeling and Analysis of Coal-Based Lurgi Gasification for LNG and Methanol Coproduction Process
December 9, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coproduction, cryogenic separation, Liquified Natural Gas, Lurgi syngas, methanol synthesis
A coal-based coproduction process of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and methanol (CTLNG-M) is developed and key units are simulated in this paper. The goal is to find improvements of the low-earning coal to synthesis natural gas (CTSNG) process using the same raw material but producing a low-margin, single synthesis natural gas (SNG) product. In the CTLNG-M process, there are two innovative aspects. Firstly, the process can co-generate high value-added products of LNG and methanol, in which CH4 is separated from the syngas to obtain liquefied natural gas (LNG) through a cryogenic separation unit, while the remaining lean-methane syngas is then used for methanol synthesis. Secondly, CO2 separated from the acid gas removal unit is partially reused for methanol synthesis reaction, which consequently increases the carbon element utilization efficiency and reduces the CO2 emission. In this paper, the process is designed with the output products of 642,000 tons/a LNG and 1,367,800 tons/a methan... [more]

Numerical Simulation of Darcy−Forchheimer 3D Unsteady Nanofluid Flow Comprising Carbon Nanotubes with Cattaneo−Christov Heat Flux and Velocity and Thermal Slip Conditions
December 9, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: carbon nanotubes, Cattaneo–Christov heat flux, Darcy–Forchheimer flow, nanofluid flow, numerical solution
A mathematical model comprising Darcy Forchheimer effects on the 3D nanofluid flow with engine oil as a base fluid containing suspended carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is envisioned. The CNTs are of both types i.e., multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The flow is initiated by an exponentially stretched surface. The impacts of Cattaneo−Christov heat flux along with velocity and thermal slip conditions are key factors in the novelty of the defined model. The boundary layer notion is designed to convert the compact form of equations into the component shape. Appropriate transformations lead to differential equations with high nonlinearity. The final non-dimensional system is solved numerically by a “MATLAB” function known as bvp4c. For both CNTs, different graphical sketches are drawn to present the influence of arising parameters versus related profiles. The outcomes show that higher slip parameter boosts the axial velocity, whereas fluid temperature... [more]

Simulation of Ion Exchange Resin with Finite Difference Methods
December 9, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: finite difference method, ion exchange, Matlab, Simulation
Ion exchange resin is used to remove potentially corrosive impurities from coolant in the first circuit of a nuclear power plant. After one operational cycle, the used and unused resin in the mixed bed is discarded as solid waste. The aim of this work is to create a mathematical model to predict the operational cycle time of the mixed bed resin for reducing unused resin discharge. A partial differential equation (PDE) was set up with the conservation of matter. A finite difference method was used to solve the PDE. Matlab was the programming and calculating tool used in this work. The data from solution were obtained at different time and space nodes. The model was then verified experimentally using different ions on exchange columns. Concentrations of K+, Mn2+, and Cl- were calculated to verify the validation of the model by comparing it with experimental data. The calculated values showed good consistency with the experimental value.

By blending thermodynamic variables given by global energy and mass balances with computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM) modeling and simulation, the methodology provides an initial approximation to the understanding of heat transfer inside industry rotary coolers. The NPK cooling process was modeled in CFD software Simcenter STAR − CCM + 13.06.011 using a Eulerian−Lagrangian scheme through a coupled CFD-DEM method using one-way coupling. The average temperature of the NPK particles was obtained as well as the average mass flow of the particles dropping as the drum was rotating. The analysis was performed for two-particle diameters (8 and 20 mm) during 17.5 s. The average heat transfer coefficient between the fluid and the NPK particles during the simulated time was obtained. A thermodynamic analysis was carried... [more]

December 3, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, diaphragm valve, profile design optimize, throttling characteristics
The throttling characteristics of the diaphragm valve are numerically studied in this paper. Firstly, the diaphragm deformation performance is analyzed by a finite element method, while the upper boundary morphology of the internal flow field under different valve openings was obtained. Then the two-dimensional simulation of the weir diaphragm valve flow field is carried out in order to explore the optimal design of flow path profile. The study shows that the throttling characteristics can be improved by flatting the ridge side wall, widening the top of the ridge and gently flatting the internal protruding of the flow path. In addition, using the local grid encryption techniques based on velocity gradient adaptive and y+ adaptive can improve the accuracy of simulation results. Finally, a cavitation two-phase flow simulation is carried out. The results show that cavitation may occur below 50% opening of diaphragm valve in ultra-pure water system, which becomes more intense with the incr... [more]

Since 1991, from the beginning of the carbon nanotube era, this has been a focus point for investigation due to its synthetic and simple nature. Unique properties like good stiffness, high surface area, and resilience of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been investigated in many engineering applications such as hydrogen storage, composite material, energy storage, electrochemical super-capacitors, transistors, sensors, and field-emitting devices. Keeping in view these applications, we investigate single and multi-walled CNTs nanofluid flow having water as the base fluid between parallel and horizontal rotating plates with microstructure and inertial properties. The thermal radiation effect is considered for variable phenomenon of heat generation/consumption. The principal equations are first symmetrically transformed to a system of nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs), and then, Homotopy Analysis Technique (HAM) and numerical method are employed for solving these couple... December 3, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Buongiorno’s model, curved channel, exponential stretching, numerical technique, thermal slip effects
We considered the steady flow of Buongiorno’s model over a permeable exponentially stretching channel. The mathematical model was constructed with the assumptions on curved channels. After applying the boundary layer approximation on the Navier−Stocks equation, we produced nonlinear partial differential equations. These equations were converted into a system of non-dimensional ordinary differential equations through an appropriate similarity transformation. The dimensionless forms of the coupled ordinary differential equations were elucidated numerically through boundary value problem fourth order method. This method gains fast convergence as compared to other method such as the shooting method and the Numerical Solution of Differential Equations Mathematica method. The influence of the governing parameters which are involved in ordinary differential equations are highlighted through graphs while R e s 1 / 2 C f , R e s 1 / 2 N u s , and R e s − 1 /... [more]

December 3, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: flow behavior, fracturing horizontal wells, multi-porosity, shale gas reservoirs, water-gas two-phase flow
Hydraulic fracturing is a necessary method to develop shale gas reservoirs effectively and economically. However, the flow behavior in multi-porosity fractured reservoirs is difficult to characterize by conventional methods. In this paper, combined with apparent porosity/permeability model of organic matter, inorganic matter and induced fractures, considering the water film in unstimulated reservoir volume (USRV) region water and bulk water in effectively stimulated reservoir volume (ESRV) region, a multi-media water-gas two-phase flow model was established. The finite difference is used to solve the model and the water-gas two-phase flow behavior of multi-fractured horizontal wells is obtained. Mass transfer between different-scale media, the effects of pore pressure on reservoirs and fluid properties at different production stages were considered in this model. The influence of the dynamic reservoir physical parameters on flow behavior and gas production in multi-fractured horizontal... [more]

December 3, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Adsorption, carbon molecular sieve (CMS), nitrogen, nitrogen generator, pressure swing adsorption (PSA)
Nitrogen is an inert gas available in the air and is widely used in industry and food storage technology. Commonly, it is separated by air refrigerant liquefaction and fractional distillation techniques based on different boiling temperatures of components in the mixed air. Currently, selective adsorption techniques by molecular sieve materials are studied and applied to separate gases based on their molecular size. In this paper, we simulate and investigate the effect parameters in a single fixed-bed model of a nitrogen gas generator using carbon molecular sieves, following pressure swing adsorption. This study aims to identify the effect of changing parameters so as to select the optimal working conditions of a single fixed-bed model, used as a basis for equipment optimization. December 3, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: co-incineration, emission reduction, green production, rotary kiln, waste disposal
A large amount of solid and liquid waste is produced in pesticide production. It is necessary to adopt appropriate disposal processes to reduce pollutant emissions. A co-incineration scheme for mixing multi-component wastes in a rotary kiln was proposed for waste disposal from pesticide production. According to the daily output of solid and liquid wastes, the proportion of mixing was determined. An experiment of the co-incineration of solid and liquid wastes was established. Experimental results showed that the mixed waste could be completely disposed at 850 °C, and the residence time in the kiln exceeded 1 h. A model method for mixture and diesel oil-assisted combustion was proposed. Numerical simulation was performed to predict the granular motion and reveal the combustion interactions of the co-incineration of mixed wastes in the rotary kiln. Simulation results reproduced movements, such as rolling and cascading, and obtained the optimum rotational speed and diesel oil flow for the... [more]

November 24, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: chaotic advection, Computational Fluid Dynamics, engulfment flow, helicoidal flow, microfluidics, passive micromixer, T-micromixer, vortex flow
Laminar fluid flow and advection-dominant transport produce ineffective mixing conditions in micromixers. In these systems, a desirable fluid mixing over a short distance may be achieved using special geometries in which complex flow paths are generated. In this paper, a novel design, utilizing semi-circular ridges, is proposed to improve mixing in micro channels. Fluid flow and scalar transport are investigated employing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tool. Mixing dynamics are investigated in detail for alternative designs, injection, and diffusivity conditions. Results indicate that the convex alignment of semi-circular elements yields a specific, helicoidal-shaped fluid flow along the mixing channel which in turn enhances fluid mixing. In all cases examined, homogenous concentration distributions with mixing index values over 80% are obtained. When it is compared to the classical T-shaped micromixer, the novel design increases mixing index and mixing performance values by the fa... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, flow pattern, grooved disk, Nusselt number, two-phase flow, volume of fluid
An investigation on the two-phase flow field inside a grooved rotating-disk system is presented by experiment and computational fluid dynamics numerical simulation. The grooved rotating-disk system consists of one stationary flat disk and one rotating grooved disk. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model considering two-phase flow and heat transfer was utilized to simulate phase distributions and heat dissipation capability. The results indicate that the flow field of the grooved rotating-disk system was identified to be an air−oil flow. A stable interface between the continuous oil phase and the two-phase area could be formed and observed. Effects of Single-arc Blade Profile Length on the Performance of a Forward Multiblade Fan
November 24, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: blade profile length, experimental test, forward multiblade fan, numerical simulation, performance
The effects of single-arc blade profile length on the performance of a forward multiblade fan are investigated in this paper by computational fluid dynamics and experimental measurement. The present work emphasizes that the use of a properly reduced blade inlet angle (β1A) and properly improved blade outlet angle (β2A) is to increase the length blade profile, which suggests a good physical understanding of internal complex flow characteristics and the aerodynamic performance of the fan. Numerical results indicate that the gradient of the absolute velocity among the blades in model-L (reducing the blade inlet angle and improving blade outlet angle) is clearly lower than that of the baseline model and model-S (improving the blade inlet angle and reducing blade outlet angle), where a number of secondary flows arise on the exit surface of baseline model and model-S. However, no secondary flow occurs in model-L, and the flow loss at the exit surface of the volute (scroll-shaped flow pattern... [more]

The Role of Blade Sinusoidal Tubercle Trailing Edge in a Centrifugal Pump with Low Specific Speed
November 24, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: blade trailing edge, centrifugal pump, pressure pulsations, sinusoidal tubercle
Pressure pulsations may cause high-amplitude vibrations during the process of a centrifugal pump. The trailing edge shape of the blade has a critical influence on the pump’s pressure fluctuation and hydraulic characterization. In this paper, inspired by the humpback whale flipper, the authors research the impact of applying the sinusoidal tubercles to the blade suction side of the trailing edge. Numerical calculation and experiments are carried out to investigate the impact of the trailing edge shape on the pressure pulsations and performance of a centrifugal pump with low specific speed. Two designed impellers are tested, one is a sinusoidal tubercle trailing edge (STTE) impeller and the other is the original trailing edge (OTE) prototype. The detailed study indicates that the sinusoidal tubercle trailing edge (STTE) reduces pressure pulsation and enhances hydraulic performance. In the volute tongue region, the pressure pulsation amplitudes of STTE at fBPF decrease significantly. The... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: emulsions in porous media, MMH in asphaltenes, pressure drop, surfactant activity
The most complex components in heavy crude oils tend to form aggregates that constitute the dispersed phase in these fluids, showing the high viscosity values that characterize them. Water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions are affected by the presence and concentration of this phase in crude oil. In this paper, a theoretical study based on computational chemistry was carried out to determine the molecular interaction energies between paraffin−asphaltenes−water and four surfactant molecules to predict their effect in W/O emulsions and the theoretical influence on the pressure drop behavior for fluids that move through porous media. The mathematical model determined a typical behavior of the fluid when the parameters of the system are changed (pore size, particle size, dispersed phase fraction in the fluid, and stratified fluid) and the viscosity model determined that two of the surfactant molecules are suitable for applications in the destabilization of W/O emulsions. Air-Core−Liquid-Ring (ACLR) Atomization Part II: Influence of Process Parameters on the Stability of Internal Liquid Film Thickness and Resulting Spray Droplet Sizes
November 24, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ACLR, atomization, Computational Fluid Dynamics, high viscosity, liquid film thickness, two phase flow
Air-core−liquid-ring (ACLR) atomization presents a specific type of internal mixing pneumatic atomization. It can be used for disintegration of high viscous feed liquids into small droplets at relatively low gas consumptions. However, the specific principle of ACLR atomization is still under research and no guidelines for process and atomizer design are available. Regarding literature on pre-filming atomizers, it can be hypothesized for ACLR atomization that the liquid film thickness inside the exit orifice of the atomizer, as well as the resulting spray droplet sizes decrease with increasing air-to-liquid ratio (ALR) and decreasing feed viscosity. In this study, the time dependent liquid film thickness inside the exit orifice of the atomizer was predicted by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. Results were compared to high speed video images and correlated to measured spray droplet sizes. In conclusion, the hypothesis could be validated by simulation and experimental... [more]

Explicit Residence Time Distribution of a Generalised Cascade of Continuous Stirred Tank Reactors for a Description of Short Recirculation Time (Bypassing)
November 24, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bypassing, continuous manufacturing, continuous stirred tank reactor, Fourier analysis, residence time distribution
The tanks-in-series model (TIS) is a popular model to describe the residence time distribution (RTD) of non-ideal continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) with limited back-mixing. In this work, the TIS model was generalised to a cascade of n CSTRs with non-integer non-negative n. The resulting model describes non-ideal back-mixing with n > 1. However, the most interesting feature of the n-CSTR model is the ability to describe short recirculation times (bypassing) with n < 1 without the need of complex reactor networks. The n-CSTR model is the only model that connects the three fundamental RTDs occurring in reactor modelling by variation of a single shape parameter n: The unit impulse at n→0, the exponential RTD of an ideal CSTR at n = 1, and the delayed impulse of an ideal plug flow reactor at n→∞. The n-CSTR model can be used as a stand-alone model or as part of a reactor network. The bypassing material fraction for the regime n < 1 was analysed. Finally, a Fourier analysis o... [more]

Review and Modeling of Crystal Growth of Atropisomers from Solutions
November 24, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: conformer, growth inhibition, habit, Modelling, step propagation
In this paper, theories on anisotropic crystal growth and crystallization of atropisomers are reviewed and a model for anisotropic crystal growth from solution containing slow inter-converting conformers is presented. The model applies to systems with growth-dominated crystallization from solutions and assumes that only one conformation participates in the solute integration step and is present in the crystal lattice. Other conformers, defined as the wrong conformers, must convert to the right conformer before they can assemble to the crystal lattice. The model presents a simple implicit method for evaluating the growth inhibition effect by the wrong conformers. The crystal growth model applies to anisotropic growth in two main directions, namely a slow-growing face and a fast-growing face and requires the knowledge of solute crystal face integration coefficients in both directions. A parameter estimation algorithm was derived to extract those coefficients from data about temporal conc... [more]

Performance and Kinetic Model of a Single-Stage Anaerobic Digestion System Operated at Different Successive Operating Stages for the Treatment of Food Waste
November 24, 2019 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: anaerobic biofilm reactor, biogas, food waste, hydraulic retention time, kinetic model, kinetic study, process stability and performance
A large quantity of food waste (FW) is generated annually across the world and results in environmental pollution and degradation. This study investigated the performance of a 160 L anaerobic biofilm single-stage reactor in treating FW. The reactor was operated at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 124, 62, and 35 days under mesophilic conditions. The maximum biogas and methane yield achieved was 0.934 L/g VSadded and 0.607 L CH4/g VSadded, respectively, at an HRT of 124 days. When HRT decreased to 62 days, the volatile fatty acid (VFA) and ammonia accumulation increased rapidly whereas pH, methane yield, and biogas yield decreased continuously. The decline in biogas production was likely due to shock loading, which resulted in scum accumulation in the reactor. A negative correlation between biogas yield and volatile solid (VS) removal efficiency was also observed, owing to the floating scum carrying and urging the sludge toward the upper portion of the reactor. The highest... [more]

We first examine whether and how current practices rationalize within a decision process framework with a fictitious investor facing a decision problem subject to incomplete information. We then develop an algorithmic procedure for investment evaluation on both monetary and diffusion-of-innovation fronts. Our methodology builds upon discounted cash flow analysis and Bayesian inference and utilizes the Rogers diffusion of innovation paradigm for computing lower expected returns. We also introduce a set of intangible metrics for quantifying the level of diffusion of process modeling within an organization.
