Integrated Process for Producing Glycolic Acid from Carbon Dioxide Capture Coupling Green Hydrogen
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, glycolic acid synthesis, process analysis, process modeling, renewable hydrogen
A novel process path is proposed to produce glycolic acid (GA) from CO2 as the feedstock, including CO2 capture, power-to-hydrogen, CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, methanol oxidation to formaldehyde, and formaldehyde carbonylation units. The bottlenecks are discussed from the perspectives of carbon utilization, CO2 emissions, total site energy integration, and techno-economic analysis. The carbon utilization ratio of the process is 82.5%, and the CO2 capture unit has the largest percentage of discharge in carbon utilization. Among the indirect emissions of each unit, the CO2 hydrogenation to methanol has the largest proportion of indirect carbon emissions, followed by the formaldehyde carbonylation to glycolic acid and the CO2 capture. After total site energy integration, the utility consumption is 1102.89 MW for cold utility, 409.67 MW for heat utility, and 45.98 MW for power. The CO2 hydrogenation to methanol makes the largest contribution to utility consumption due to the multi-stage... [more]

Effect of a Radially Offset Impeller on the Unsteady Characteristics of Internal Flow in a Double-Suction Centrifugal Fan
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: centrifugal fan, numerical simulation, offset impeller, pressure fluctuation
The impeller of double-suction centrifugal fans may be radially offset from the centerline of the volute due to faults in assembly or installation. The radial offset results in the more significant non-uniformity of internal flow in the centrifugal fan, which is biased from the designed condition, and deteriorates the aerodynamic performances of the fan. In this paper, we performed Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (URANS) simulations on the unsteady internal flow of a double-suction centrifugal fan. The impeller of the fan is offset in the radial direction from its original position and is thus closer to the wall of the volute on one side and away from the opposite side. Numerical results show that the offset impeller changes the size of the gap between the impeller and collector in the radial direction, which produces a non-uniform distribution of static pressure and even reversed flow at the inlet of the impeller. As the impeller is offset away from the baffle of the volute,... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 3D-CFD, experimental data, fuel cell, homogenized channel model, numerical optimization, PEM, PEMFC, Simulation, single-channel model, transient, unsteady
Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) are promising devices for securing future sustainable mobility. Their field of application ranges from locally emission-free stationary power generation to propulsion systems for vehicles of all kinds. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations are successfully used to access the internal states and processes with high temporal and spatial resolution. It is challenging to obtain reliable physical values of material properties for the parameterization of the numerous governing equations. The current work addresses this problem and uses numerically reduced models to parameterize sophisticated transient 3D-CFD models of a commercial PEMFC. Experimental data from a stack test stand were available as a reference for numerical optimization of selected parameters and validation purposes. With an innovative meshing approach, the homogenized channels approach, a reduction of computational cells by 87% could be achieved, thus enabling the unstea... [more]

Minimizing Foaming and Bulking in Activated Sludge with Bacteriophage Treatment: A Review of Mathematical Modeling
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: biotechnology, estimation, mathematical modeling, population models, wastewater treatment
The interest in the ability of phages to control bacterial populations has extended from medical applications into the fields of agriculture, aquaculture, and the food industry. In particular, several authors have proposed using bacteriophages as an alternative method to control foaming and bulking in wastewater treatment. This strategy has shown successful results at the laboratory scale. However, this technology is still in development, and there are several challenges to overcome before bacteriophages can be widely used to control foaming and bulking in pilot or larger-scale treatment plants. Several models of the infection mechanisms in individual bacteria−phage pairs have been reported, i.e., for controlled systems with only one bacterium species in the presence of one phage species. However, activated sludge treatment systems largely differ from this situation, which opens a large horizon for future research. Mathematical models will play a key role in this development process, a... [more]

Modeling and Analysis of New Power Devices Based on Linear Phase-Shifting Transformer
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cogging effect, distributed magnetic circuit method (DMCM), linear phase-shifting transformer (LPST), magnetic field, Schwarz–Christoffel transformation (SCT)
With the rapid development of new power systems, various new power devices have also been developed. It is very important to establish analytical models of new power devices to ensure or even improve the reliability and stability of the power system. A linear phase-shifting transformer (LPST) is a new type of power device that mainly relies on air gaps to transfer energy, so establishing an accurate air-gap magnetic field model is very important for improving the efficiency of this system. In this paper, an analytical model of an unequal-pitch linear phase-shifting transformer (UP-LPST) was established by combining the distributed magnetic circuit method (DMCM) and Schwartz−Christopher transformation (SCT). Taking the magnetic field strength as a variable, an accurate magnetic field analysis model for a UP-LPST considering saturation, cogging, and edge was established. Taking a 1 kw UP-LPST as a prototype, the accuracy of the model was verified by the finite element method and experime... [more]

Reliability Modelling through the Three-Parametric Weibull Model Based on Microsoft Excel Facilities
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: BETA.INV function, estimator, linear regression, location parameter, probability, Weibull model
The paper aims to capitalize on the new features that are offered by the Microsoft Excel calculation program for reliability modeling, using the Median Ranks estimator that is calculated directly with the BETA.INV function, not estimated by various algebraic estimators, as is generally the case. Starting from this first step, a method of modeling reliability is elaborated through the three-parametric Weibull model that is based exclusively on this software, which is accessible to anyone and can be used even in the case of online learning, which is widespread in recent years due to the pandemic situation. The probability plotting method is applied, using the Median Ranks estimator that is calculated directly with the BETA.INV function for a probability equal to 0.5. A flowchart is made for the proposed method, which could be easily translated into a calculation program. By representing in logarithmic coordinates, we determined the Weibull models for different values that were initially... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: argon-stirred ladle, bubble, fluid flow, numerical simulation, particle image velocimetry
The argon-stirred ladle is a standard piece of steelmaking refining equipment. The molten steel quality will improve when a good argon-stirred process is applied. In this paper, a Multiphysics model that contained fluid flow, bubble transport, alloy transport, bubble heat flux, alloy heat flux, alloy melting, and an alloy concentration species transport model was established. The fluid model and bubble transport model that were used to calculate the fluid velocity were verified by the hydraulic model of the ladle that was combined with particle image velocimetry measurement results. The numerical simulation results of the temperature fields and steel−slag interface shape were verified by a ladle that contained 25 t of molten steel in a steel plant. The velocity difference between the hydraulic model and numerical model decreased when the CL (integral time-scale constant) increased from 0 to 0.3; then, the difference increased when the CL increased from 0.3 to 0.45. New Directions in Modeling and Computational Methods for Complex Mechanical Dynamical Systems
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: computational approaches, constrained motion, new approaches to nonlinear and multibody dynamics, shell rolling on an arbitrary surface, zero-mass particles
This paper presents a new conceptualization of complex nonlinear mechanical systems and develops new and novel computational methods for determining their response to given applied forces and torques. The new conceptualization uses the idea of including particles of zero mass to describe the dynamics of such systems. This leads to simplifications in the development of their equations of motion and engenders a straightforward new computational approach to simulate their behavior. The purpose of the paper is to develop a new analytical and computational methodology to handle complex systems and to illustrate it through the study of an old unsolved problem in classical mechanics, that of a non-uniform rigid spherical shell rolling, without slipping, under gravity on an arbitrary dimpled bowl-shaped rigid surface. The new conceptualization provides the explicit equations of motion for the system, the analytical determination of the reaction forces supplied by the surface, and a straightfor... [more]

Study on Optimization of Initial Support for a Tunnel in the Fracture Zone Based on the Strength Reduction Method
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: initial support, numerical simulation, on-site monitoring, support parameters, tunnel in the fracture zone
In this paper, the fracture zone of the Chunxuan Road Tunnel in Jinan, Shandong Province, China was selected for the engineering background. With reference to the field monitoring data, a finite element model was established based on the strength reduction method. With the aid of this model, the influences of different initial support parameters (including lining, bolt and steel arch) on the tunnel deformation in the fracture zone were analyzed to obtain reasonable initial support parameters. The results show that the tunnel deformation under the original initial support is severe. Among the initial support methods, such as lining, bolt, and steel arch, the parameters of the lining and steel arch significantly influence the tunnel deformation in the fracture zone. Therefore, selecting appropriate initial support parameters can effectively control the tunnel deformation in the fracture zone. After the optimized support scheme is adopted, failure instability no longer occurs in the tunne... [more]

Diffusion Coefficients in Systems Related to Reservoir Fluids: Available Data and Evaluation of Correlations
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: correlation, database, diffusion coefficient, high pressure, hydrocarbon, reservoir fluids
Molecular diffusion determines the time to reach local equilibrium in a reservoir. It can be a main production mechanism in scenarios such as production from fractured reservoirs or tight formation. However, there is a lack of high-pressure diffusion coefficients for reservoir fluids and its related systems. Many correlations exist, but there is no consensus on their accuracy for these systems. We provide a systematic review of the available data for systems related to reservoir fluids, as well as a comprehensive comparison of five commonly used correlations for hydrocarbon mixtures, including the extended Sigmund, Riazi-Whitson, Leahy-Dios-Firoozabadi, Wilke−Chang, and the Hayduk−Minhas correlations. We collected extensive data of diffusion coefficients in binary mixtures related to petroleum fluids and established a database of over 80 binaries and 1600 data points. We also collected the data for gas diffusion in different oils and reservoir fluids, but the data in high-pressure live... [more]

CFD Modelling of Calcination in a Rotary Lime Kiln
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: calcination, heat transfer, kiln model, numerical simulation, rotary kiln
A 2D axisymmetric computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, coupled to a 1D bed model, has been developed to capture the key processes that occur within rotary lime kilns. The model simulates the calcination reaction using a shrinking core model, and predicts the start of calcination and the degree of calcination at the end of the kiln. The model simulates heat transfer due to radiation, convection and conduction between the gas, wall, chains, and bed. The 2D gas and 1D bed models are coupled by mass and heat sinks to simulate heat transfer, evaporation, and the calcination reaction. The model is used to simulate two industrial kilns, one wet and one dry. The steady-state simulation results are compared to mill data, and good agreement is found. A sensitivity analysis is also presented, to obtain insight on how operating conditions and model variables impact the calcination location and degree of calcination.

Numerical Investigation and Optimization of the Flow Characteristics of Bend Pipe with Different Bending Angles
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bend pipe, bending angle, numerical simulation, secondary flow, structure optimization
The bend pipe with a circular section, which is widely used in hydropower, chemical industry and other fields, is a common form in pipeline systems. However, secondary flow occurs when the fluid flows through the bend pipe, thereby affecting the stability of the pipeline system. Different bending angles have various effects. Therefore, this paper establishes 3D models of a circular bend pipe with different bending angles. The influence of bending angle on flow field distribution and downstream flow is analyzed numerically. The larger the bending angle is, the more obvious the flow distribution and even the unevenness at the elbow will be, hence resulting in poor stability. The distance required to restore flow uniformity also increases. The pressure energy loss of the bend pipe with different bending angles is investigated. Results show that with the increase in bending angle, the global pressure loss presents a trend of “increase-decrease-increase.” The closer the bending angle is to... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: control algorithm, Dynamic Modelling, oxygen excess ratio, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
In this paper, a novel second-order active disturbance rejection control (2-ADRC) algorithm is proposed to optimize the control of the air supply subsystem for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). To improve the optimal control effect of the air supply subsystem for PEMFC, the modeling theory of the air supply subsystem considering dynamic characteristics of the PEMFC system is first studied, and the dynamic Simulink model of the PEMFC system is established and verified. Then, the optimal oxygen excess ratio (OER) parameters under different load currents are obtained, and the optimal OER parameters are also used as the OER control reference for the designed algorithms. In addition, a 2-ADRC algorithm is designed and proposed to make the actual OER parameters close to the optimal OER in real time. Furthermore, compared with PID and MPC algorithms, the 2-ADRC algorithm can comprehensively consider the two parameters of mass flow and pressure ratio to make the compressor work in th... [more]

In-Depth Understanding of ICD Completion Technology Working Principle
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: completion technologies, Computational Fluid Dynamics, fluid–solid interaction, heavy oil, ICD, porous media flow, RCP
The rate-controlled production (RCP) inflow control devices (ICDs) are valves placed in the lower completion of oil and gas wells, capable of autonomously controlling the reservoir inflow. This completion technology self-regulates the inflow of undesired phases, such as water, by choking the flow after the breakthrough event, thus improving the recovery factor and reducing water production. In this context, this article presents a numerical study that describes the working principle of RCP valves based on a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The numerical models are based on the conservation equations of fluid flow, the volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase flow model, and the dynamic fluid body interaction (DFBI) model to simulate the valve’s movement caused by its interaction with the flow. This study demonstrates the possibility of studying RCP valves alone or coupled with the whole completion assembly and reservoir rock. The difference in the valve efficiency after considering... Structured Development of Digital Twins—A Cross-Domain Analysis towards a Unified Approach
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: digital twin, process analysis, process modeling, reference modeling
Digital Twins (DT) as digital representations are increasingly becoming operational design tools in a variety of contexts. Although a common understanding of the concept and the underlying development procedure would facilitate DT applications, only limited information has been published on the essential stages of development and fundamental development activities. This paper examines the extent to which an abstract, and thus generally applicable model for the development of Digital Twins can be identified. In order to come up with such a reference procedure, a structured analysis of published development experiences has been performed. Three major application domains, namely product lifecycle management, manufacturing, and predictive maintenance, could be detailed and cross-checked. For each of these domains, a contextual development model could be derived from empirically valid design and engineering practices. The data also allowed for the determination of which way each model corre... [more]

Experimental Research and Practice of Mineral Separation from Flotation Tailings Based on Self-Spinning Hydrocyclones
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: flotation tailings, numerical simulation, rotation speed, self-spinning hydrocyclone, tailings separation and purification
The high-ash tailings produced by flotation contains a large number of minerals that can be recycled. However, as the separation and purification technology for flotation tailings is not mature and separation efficiencies are low, it is generally treated as separation waste, resulting in the waste of mineral resources. In view of this phenomenon, the particle size composition and density composition of high-ash minerals in flotation tailings of coal slime as well as the type and content of mineral elements were measured. It was determined that the main mineral composition is quartz, and there is also a certain amount of chlorite (silicate mineral). A self-spinning hydrocyclone used for flotation tailings separation and purification was designed, and numerical simulation was carried out by fluent software. The internal flow field-, tangential velocity-, and axial velocity-distribution characteristics of the hydrocyclone at different rotational speeds were investigated. The physical mode... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: anomaly detection, deep learning, image processing
Since unqualified products cause enterprise revenue losses, product inspection is essential for maintaining manufacturing quality. An automated optical inspection (AOI) system is an efficient tool for product inspection, providing a convenient interface for users to view their products of interest. Specifically, in the screw manufacturing industry, the conventional methods are the human visual inspection of the product and for the inspector to view the product image displayed on the dashboard of the AOI system. However, despite the inspector and the approach used, inspection results strongly depend on the inspector’s experience. Moreover, machine learning algorithms could improve the efficiency of human visual inspection, thus addressing the above problem. Based on these facts, we improved anomaly detection efficiency during product inspection, using product image data from the AOI system to obtain valuable information. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 3D modeling, drop-on-demand, droplet, inkjet printhead nozzle, printing process
This article presents a numerical simulation of a printhead model for drop-on-demand (DoD) inkjet printers. A three-dimensional droplet model is provided for the numerical study of inks, ejection parameters, droplet movement, and the analysis of droplet impacts on the surface. This work is devoted to the analysis of different droplet ejection settings during the printing process, when the behavior of the droplet directly affects the accuracy of the printing process itself. A numerical model was also developed to investigate the effect of various settings on droplet stability, including printhead size and nozzle orifice, motion parameters (pulse strength and droplet ejection amplitude) and fluid properties. The results reflect the behavior of the ink droplet over time. The behavior of the drop was tested at different waveform ejection parameters and a mass turnover was observed.

Deep Learning Model for Prediction of Diffusion in Defect Substances
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: deep learning, defect substances, diffusion, prediction
Actual diffusion activity function is an important metric utilized to describe the diffusion activities of a vacancy defect substance. In this paper, we propose a deep learning three-dimensional convolutional CNN model (D3-CNN). A 3D convolution has its kernel slides in three dimensions as opposed to two dimensions with 2D convolutions. 3D convolution is more suitable for three-dimensional data. We also propose an amplification learning technique to predict the actual diffusion activity of a vacancy defect substance, which is impacted by the geometrical parameters of the defect substance and the vacancy distribution function. In this model, the geometric parameters of a three-dimensional constructed vacancy defect substance are generated. The 3D dataset is obtained by the atoms diffusion defect (ADD) simulation model. The geometric parameters of the 3D vacancy defect substance are computed by the proposed amplification technique. The 3D geometric parameters and the diffusion activity v... [more]
