February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: numerical simulation, solar assisted heat pump drying, system configuration optimization
In this paper, a new solar-assisted heat pump drying system with waste heat recovery and double water tanks (SCAHP) was established and the system optimized by TRNSYS and variable air volume experiment. The annual cumulative efficiency of the SCAHP (COPac), buffer tank heating efficiency (ηBT) and hot water storage tank heating efficiency (ηST) are all considered as optimization objectives, and this paper discusses the relationship between the three optimization objectives and studies the influence of hot air volume (qDR), area of solar collector (ASC), inclination angle of solar collector (ISC) and volume of heat storage water tank (VST) on system efficiency in the drying process. In order to explore the general rule of system optimization, numerical analysis and optimization were carried out in five typical cities in five climatic regions of China. The results show that the mixed variable air volume mode can increase the drying rate with less energy loss, and shorten the drying perio... [more]

Theoretical Estimation of Evaporation Heat in Paper Drying Process Based on Drying Curve
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
At present, the theoretical estimation of paper web’s evaporation heat is based on sorption isothermals. The measuring conditions are harsh, and the test speed is slow. This paper attempts to explore a theoretical method which can quickly determine the evaporation heat of paper web. During the new method, based on the measurement of the paper drying curve, the theoretical estimation model of paper evaporation heat was obtained by deducing the mechanism of heat and mass transfer. Compared with the traditional method based on sorption isothermals, the new model based on the drying curve has some advantages in measurement speed and easy access to basic data. Finally, the paper verifies the reliability of the model from two application scenarios of the laboratory and production line.

Improvements of Micro-CHP SOFC System Operation by Efficient Dynamic Simulation Methods
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: capacity model, hot standby, hotbox, Optimization, partial load operation, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), system heat-up, thermal management
Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) technology is of high interest for stationary decentralized generation of electricity and heat in combined heat and power systems (CHP) for the residential sector. Application scenarios for SOFC systems in an electricity-regulated mode play an important role, especially in places where an electrical grid connection is not available or rather unstable. The advantages of SOFC systems are the high fuel flexibility and the high efficiencies also under partial load operation compared to other decentralized power generation technologies. Due to the long, energy-consuming system heat-up and the limited partial load capability, SOFC systems do not reach the performance of conventional power generation technologies. Furthermore, stack thermal cycling is associated with power degradation and should be minimized. In this paper, the improvement of these drawbacks are investigated for hotbox-based SOFC systems in the 1 kWel-class for residential applications. Since expe... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Escherichia coli, hybrid modeling, Machine Learning, model-assisted DoE, quality by design, upstream bioprocessing
The fast exploration of a design space and identification of the best process conditions facilitating the highest space-time yield are of great interest for manufacturers. To obtain this information, depending on the design space, a large number of practical experiments must be performed, analyzed, and evaluated. To reduce this experimental effort and increase the process understanding, we evaluated a model-based design of experiments to rapidly identify the optimum process conditions in a design space maximizing space-time yield. From a small initial dataset, hybrid models were implemented and used as digital bioprocess twins, thus obtaining the recommended optimal experiment. In cases where these optimum conditions were not covered by existing data, the experiment was carried out and added to the initial data set, re-training the hybrid model. The procedure was repeated until the model gained certainty about the best process conditions, i.e., no new recommendations. To evaluate this... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: acoustic emission, condition monitoring, data fusion, drive train, Machine Learning, vibration
Early damage detection and classification by condition monitoring systems is crucial to enable predictive maintenance of manufacturing systems and industrial facilities. Data analysis can be improved by applying machine learning algorithms and fusion of data from heterogenous sensors. This paper presents an approach for a step-wise integration of classifications gained from vibration and acoustic emission sensors in order to combine the information from signals acquired in the low and high frequency ranges. A test rig comprising a drive train and bearings with small artificial damages is used for acquisition of experimental data. The results indicate that an improvement of damage classification can be obtained using the proposed algorithm of combining classifiers for vibrations and acoustic emissions.

Interactive Decision Tree Learning and Decision Rule Extraction Based on the ImbTreeEntropy and ImbTreeAUC Packages
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: classification trees, decision rules, interactive learning, Machine Learning
This paper presents two new R packages ImbTreeEntropy and ImbTreeAUC for building decision trees, including their interactive construction and analysis, which is a highly regarded feature for field experts who want to be involved in the learning process. ImbTreeEntropy functionality includes the application of generalized entropy functions, such as Renyi, Tsallis, Sharma-Mittal, Sharma-Taneja and Kapur, to measure the impurity of a node. ImbTreeAUC provides non-standard measures to choose an optimal split point for an attribute (as well the optimal attribute for splitting) by employing local, semi-global and global AUC measures. The contribution of both packages is that thanks to interactive learning, the user is able to construct a new tree from scratch or, if required, the learning phase enables making a decision regarding the optimal split in ambiguous situations, taking into account each attribute and its cut-off. The main difference with existing solutions is that our packages pro... [more]

Biomass gasification for energy purposes has several advantages, such as the mitigation of global warming and national energy independency. In the present work, the data from an innovative and intensified steam/oxygen biomass gasification process, integrating a gas filtration step directly inside the reactor, are presented. The produced gas at the outlet of the 1 MWth gasification pilot plant was analysed in terms of its main gaseous products (hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and methane) and contaminants. Experimental test sets were carried out at 0.25−0.28 Equivalence Ratio (ER), 0.4−0.5 Steam/Biomass (S/B), and 780−850 °C gasification temperature. Almond shells were selected as biomass feedstock and supplied to the reactor at approximately 120 and 150 kgdry/h. Based on the collected data, the in-vessel filtration system showed a dust removal efficiency higher than 99%-wt. February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: alternative reforms, comparative, fixed bed, kinetic, methane, performance
A comparative evaluation of alternative methane reforming processes as an option to steam reforming was performed by carrying out simulations of operations in a fixed bed reactor with a Ni (4.8 wt.%/γ-Al2O3) catalyst at 1023 K under 1.0 bar. Methane reforms, including processing with carbon dioxide (DRM, CH4/CO2), autothermal reform (ATRM, CH4/H2O/O2), and combined reform (CRM, CH4/CO2/H2O/O2) had their operations predicted based on experimental data developed to represent their kinetic behavior, formalized with mechanisms and parametric quantifications. The performance of fixed bed reactor operations for methane conversions occurred with different reaction rates in the three alternative processes, and comparatively the orders of magnitude were 102, 10−1, and 10−4 in CRM, ATRM, and DRM, respectively. According to each process, the methane conversions were oriented towards the predominant productions of hydrogen or carbon monoxide, indicating the kinetic selectivities of H2, 86.1% and C... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cooling power, exchanger, mathematical model, numerical model, passive cooling beam, Simulation
This article is focused on the research of passive cooling beams and increasing their cooling capacity. A passive cooling beam with four tubes was chosen as a model. A mathematical model was built using the corresponding criterion equations to capture the behavior of a passive cooling beam. This mathematical model can be used to optimize geometrical parameters (the distance between the ribs, rib height and thickness, and diameter and number of tubes), by changing these geometric parameters we can increase the cooling performance. The work includes a mathematical model for calculating the boundary layer, which has a significant influence on the cooling performance. The results obtained from the created mathematical model show that the model works correctly and can be used to optimize the cooling performance of passive cooling beams. To better understand the behavior of a passive cooling beam in a confined space, the entire device was numerically simulated, as was the flow in the interco... [more]

Numerical Study of Non-Linear Dynamic Behavior of an Asymmetric Rotor for Wave Energy Converter in Regular Waves
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, non-linear motion, restoring moment, Salter’s duck-type rotor
This study conducted a numerical investigation on the non-linear motion problems between a Salter duck-type rotor and large waves using CFD simulations. Regular waves of five different wave heights were generated. First, the linear motion of the rotor from the CFD simulation was verified by comparing it with the existing experimental and frequency domain analysis results. Then, a series of CFD simulations were performed to investigate the non-linear motions of the rotor. In the case of a lower wave height, the CFD simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental and frequency domain analysis results. However, as the wave height increased, the resonance periods were different in each other. In addition, the magnitudes of normalized pitch motions by the wave heights decreased as the wave heights increased. To investigate the aforementioned phenomena, the pitch motion equation was examined using separate CFD simulations. The results showed that changing the restoring moment... [more]

Deep-Sequence−Aware Candidate Generation for e-Learning System
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: candidate generation, deep learning, recommendation system, sequence-aware embedding
Recently proposed recommendation systems based on embedding vector technology allow us to utilize a wide range of information such as user side and item side information to predict user preferences. Since there is a lack of ability to use the sequential information of user history, most recommendation system algorithms fail to predict the user’s preferences more accurately. Therefore, in this study, we developed a novel recommendation system that takes advantage of sequence and heterogeneous information in the candidate-generation process. The principle underlying the proposed recommendation model is that the new sequence based embedding layer in the model catches the sequence pattern of user history. The proposed deep-learning model may improve the prediction accuracy using user data, item data, and sequential information of the user’s profile. Experiments were conducted on datasets of the Korean e-learning platform, and the empirical results confirmed the capability of the proposed a... [more]

Tuyere-Level Syngas Injection in the Blast Furnace: A Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: blast furnace, combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, fuel injection, Natural Gas, numerical simulation, RAFT
With the recent push towards high injection rate blast furnace operation for economic and environmental reasons, it has become desirable in North America to better understand the impacts of alternate injected gas fuels in comparison to the well-documented limitations of natural gas. The quenching effects of gas injection on the furnace present a functional limit on the maximum stable injection rate which can be utilized. With this in mind, researchers at Purdue University Northwest’s Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation utilized previously developed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of the blast furnace to explore the impacts of replacing natural gas with syngas in a blast furnace with a single auxiliary fuel supply. Simulations predicted that the syngas injection can indeed reduce coke consumption in the blast furnace at similar injection rates to natural gas while maintaining stable raceway flame and reducing gas temperatures. Mature landfill leachates are characterized by high levels of ammoniacal nitrogen which must be reduced for discharge in the sewer system and further treatment in municipal wastewater treatment plants. The use of anammox-based processes can allow for an efficient treatment of ammonium-rich leachates. In this work, two real scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs), designed to initially perform partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A) and simultaneous partial nitrification and denitrification (SPND) for the treatment of ammonium-rich urban landfill leachate, were modelled using BioWin 6.0 in order to enable plant-wide modelling and optimizing. The constructed models were calibrated and validated using data from long- and short-term (one cycle) SBR operation and fit well to the main physical-chemical parameters (i.e., ammonium, nitrite and nitrate concentrations) measured during short-term (one cycle) operations. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cavitation number, large eddy simulation, nozzle, peak velocity, self-excited oscillation pulse jet
Self-excited oscillation pulse jet technology is widely used to clean sediment from oil storage tanks. Its successful application is dependent on jet performance. As the cleaning requirements of the oil industry increase, it is necessary to optimise the structure of self-excited oscillation pulsed jet nozzles (SOPJNs) to optimise cleaning and energy efficiencies. In this study, the jet performance of a SOPJN is modelled and analysed based on computational fluid dynamics with consideration of a large eddy simulation and homogeneous cavitation. The modelling results are highly consistent with experimental results. The effects of the SOPJN’s inlet diameter, cavity diameter, cavity length, wall reflection angle, and inlet pressure on the jet’s peak velocity, oscillation frequency, and cavitation number were analysed. February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: construction vehicles, fractional order, hydro-pneumatic suspension, mathematical model
The motion differential equation of hydro-pneumatic suspension is established to describe the vibration characteristics for a certain type of construction vehicle. The output force was deduced from the suspension parameters. Based on the suspension characteristics of a multi-phase medium, fractional calculus theory was introduced, and its fractional Bagley−Torvik equation was formed. The numerical computation by a low-pass filter of the Oustaloup algorithm was performed. The numerical solution of a nonlinear fractional equation was obtained to investigate the vibration characteristics of the suspension fractional system. Through the building of an equal-ratio test platform and simulation model, the fractional- integer-order model simulation and experimental data were compared. When the fractional order is 0.9, it better describes the motion characteristics of suspension system. A Numerical Analysis of the Effects of Equivalence Ratio Measurement Accuracy on the Engine Efficiency and Emissions at Varied Compression Ratios
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 1D CFD simulation, compression ratio, equivalence ratio, measurement accuracy, spark ignition engine
Increasingly stringent regulations to reduce vehicle emissions have made it important to study emission mitigation strategies. Highly accurate control of the air-fuel ratio is an effective way to reduce emissions. However, a less accurate sensor can lead to reduced engine stability and greater variability in engine efficiency and emissions. Additionally, internal combustion engines (ICE) are moving toward higher compression ratios to achieve higher thermal efficiency and alleviate the energy crisis. The objective of this investigation was to analyze the significance of the accuracy of air-fuel ratio measurements at different compression ratios. In this study, a calibrated 1D CFD model was used to analyze the performance and emissions at different compression ratios. The results showed that carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) were sensitive to the equivalence ratio regardless of the compression ratio. With a slight change in the equivalence ratio, a high compression ratio had... [more]

A Parametric Numerical Study for Diagnosing the Failure of Large Diameter Bored Piles Using Supervised Machine Learning Approach
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: failure mechanism, finite element method, hyperparameters, large diameter bored pile, load transfer, parametric study, supervised machine learning
The full-scale static pile loading test is without question the most reliable methodology for estimating the ultimate capacity of large diameter bored piles (LDBP). However, in most cases, the obtained load-settlement curves from LDBP loading tests tend to increase without reaching the failure point or an asymptote. Loading an LDBP until reaching apparent failure is seldom practical because of the significant amount of settlement usually required for the full shaft and base mobilizations. With that in mind, the supervised learning algorithm requires a huge labeled data set to train the machine properly, which makes it ideal for sensitivity analysis, forecasting, and predictions, among other unsupervised algorithms. However, providing such a huge dataset of LDBP loaded to failure tests might be very complicated. In this paper, a novel practice has been proposed to establish a labeled dataset needed to train supervised machine learning algorithms on accurately predicting the ultimate cap... [more]

Discrete Element Simulation Based on Elastic−Plastic Damping Model of Corn Kernel−Cob Bonding Force for Rotation Speed Optimization of Threshing Component
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: corn ear threshing rate, corn kernel–cob bonding force, corn threshing, discrete element method, rotation speed of the thresher
Current corn kernel-cob bonding mechanics models (LSD models) uniformly consider the bonding force changes during the maize threshing operation as an elastic change, resulting in computational errors of up to 10% or more in discrete element simulations. Due to the inability to perform high-precision discrete element simulation of the mechanics characteristics during the corn threshing operation, the core operating parameters of the corn thresher (rotation speed of the threshing component) rely mainly on empirical settings, resulting in a consistent difficulty in exceeding 85% of the corn ear threshing rate. In this paper, by testing the mechanics characteristics of corn kernels, the bonding force is found to have both elastic and plastic changes during the threshing process. An elastic−plastic (EP) damping model of the corn kernel−cob bonding force was established by introducing a bonding restitution coefficient e to achieve an integrated consideration of the two changes. By testing th... [more]

Pressure Fluctuation Reduction of a Centrifugal Pump by Blade Trailing Edge Modification
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: centrifugal pump, energy distribution, euler head, pressure fluctuation, trailing edge modification
The pressure fluctuation inside centrifugal pumps is one of the main causes of hydro-induced vibration, especially at the blade-passing frequency and its harmonics. This paper investigates the feature of blade-passing frequency excitation in a low-specific-speed centrifugal pump in the perspective of local Euler head distribution based on CFD analysis. Meanwhile, the relation between local Euler head distribution and pressure fluctuation amplitude is observed and used to explain the mechanism of intensive pressure fluctuation. The impeller blade with ordinary trailing edge profile, which is the prototype impeller in this study, usually induces wake shedding near the impeller outlet, making the energy distribution less uniform. Because of this, the method of reducing pressure fluctuation by means of improving Euler head distribution uniformity by modifying the impeller blade trailing edge profile is proposed. The impeller blade trailing edges are trimmed in different scales, which are m... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: axial flow pump, Fourier transform, model test, numerical simulation, pressure pulsation, pump device
The 30° slanted axial-flow pump device is widely used in agricultural irrigation and urban drainage in plains areas of China. However, during the actual operation process, the 30° slanted axial-flow pump device is prone to vibration, noise, cracks in the blades, and other phenomena that affect the safe and stable operation of the pump device. In order to analyze the flow pressure pulsation characteristics of the 30° slanted axial-flow pump device under different flow conditions, the time−frequency domain analysis method was used to analyze the pressure pulsation of each flow structure of the 30° slanted axial-flow pump device. The results showed that the internal pulsation law of the elbow oblique inlet flow channel is similar. At the 1.2 Qbep condition, the amplitude fluctuation of the pressure pulsation was small, and the main frequency is 4 times the rotating frequency. Effect of Closure Characteristics of Annular Jet Mixed Zone on Inspiratory Performance and Bubble System
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bubble size distribution, bubble surface area flux, closure characteristics, gas content, numerical simulation
In the flotation process, gas-liquid properties and the bubble system greatly influence bubble mineralization. In order to clarify how the mechanism applies to the closure characteristics of an annular jet mixed flow zone on the inspiratory performance and the bubble system, different degrees of closure on the velocity field and gas-liquid ratio in the mixed flow zone were investigated using numerical simulation. The variations in the characteristics of bubble size distribution, rising velocity, and gas content under different closure levels were measured with a high-speed dynamic camera technology. The results confirmed that when the closure degrees of the mixed flow zone improved, the inlet jet could gradually overcome the static pressure outside the nozzle effectively. It formed a gas-liquid mixing zone with high turbulence first, and a large pressure difference at the gas-liquid junction second. This helped to increase the inspiratory capacity. Platform Motions and Mooring System Coupled Solver for a Moored Floating Platform in a Wave
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: lumped-mass mooring line model, MoorDyn, moored buoy, OpenFOAM, platform motion, two-way coupling
In advance of building moored floating offshore platforms, in recent years, there has been a greater demand for two-way coupled simulations between a motion solver based on the viscous flow theory and a mooring line model, including cable dynamics. This paper introduces open-source libraries such as MoorDyn (the lumped-mass mooring line model) and OpenFOAM (the computational fluid dynamics libraries). It describes the methods by which they can be coupled bi-directionally. In each time step, the platform motions calculated by OpenFOAM are transferred to MoorDyn as the boundary conditions for the mooring system analysis. In contrast, MoorDyn calculates the restoring force and moment due to the mooring system and transfers them to OpenFOAM. The restoring force and moment act on the platform as the external force and moment for the platform motions in the next time step. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: AnyLogic™, brownfield, digital manufacturing, digital twin, generic simulation, Industry 4.0, production
Optimising an existing production plant is a challenging task for companies. Necessary physical test runs disturb running production processes. Simulation models are one opportunity to limit these physical test runs. This is particularly important since today’s fast and intelligent networking opportunities in production systems are in line with the call of Industry 4.0 for substantial and frequent changes. Creating simulation models for those systems requires high effort and in-depth knowledge of production processes. In the current literature, digital twins promise several advantages for production optimisation and can be used to simulate production systems, which reduce necessary physical test runs and related costs. While most companies are not able to create digital twins yet, companies using enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems have the general capability to create digital shadows.
