Zixue Luo, Wei Chen, Yue Wang, Qiang Cheng, Xiaohua Yuan, Zhigang Li, Junjie Yang
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fly ash, numerical simulation, slag, waste incinerator
This study is focused on a “V-type” waste incinerator for municipal solid waste (MSW) combustion. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are used to study the MSW combustion process. The characteristics of fly ash and slag are analyzed by using a laser particle analyzer, scanning electron microscope, X-ray fluorescence, and X-ray diffraction. The results show that the error between the CFD simulation data and measured data is less than 10%, and the changing trend of the combustion process is well-modeled. The fly ash mainly has an irregular spherical or ellipsoid structure, whereas the slag mainly has an irregular porous structure. The main constituents of the ash and slag are CaO and SiO2, along with heavy metal elements such as Cu, Pb, and Cr.
The Effects of the Length and Conductivity of Artificial Fracture on Gas Production from a Class 3 Hydrate Reservoir
Shilong Shang, Lijuan Gu, Hailong Lu
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial fracture, gas production, hydrate reservoir, numerical simulation
Natural gas hydrate is considered as a potential energy resource. To develop technologies for the exploitation of natural gas hydrate, several field gas production tests have been carried out in permafrost and continental slope sediments. However, the gas production rates in these tests were still limited, and the low permeability of the hydrate-bearing sediments is identified as one of the crucial factors. Artificial fracturing is proposed to promote gas production rate by improving reservoir permeability. In this research, numerical studies about the effect of fracture length and fluid conductivity on production performance were carried out on an artificially fractured Class 3 hydrate reservoir (where the single hydrate zone is surrounded by an overlaying and underlying hydrate-free zone), in which the equivalent conductivity method was applied to depict the artificial fracture. The results show that artificial fracture can enhance gas production by offering an extra fluid flow chann... [more]

Keywords: clustering, optimization process, photovoltaic distributed generation, smart grids, spatial database, systems modeling, voltage adequacy
The main objective of this work is to develop a methodology for analyzing the quality of the voltage level in the distribution power grid to identify and reduce the violations of voltage limits through the proposition of optimal points for the allocation of photovoltaic distributed generation. The methodology uses the geographic location of the power grid and its consumers to perform the grouping and classification in spatial grids of 100 × 100 m using the average annual consumption profile. The generated profiles, including the grid information, are sent to the photovoltaic distributed generation allocation algorithm, which, using an optimization process, identifies the geographic location, the required installed capacity, and the minimum number of photovoltaic generation units that must be inserted to minimize the violations of voltage limits, respecting the necessary restrictions. The entire proposal is applied in a real feeder with thousands of bars, whose model is validated with m... [more]
Simulating Personal Carbon Trading (PCT) with an Agent-Based Model (ABM): Investigating Adaptive Reduction Rates and Path Dependence

Keywords: adaptive reduction rate (target), agent-based model, computational approach, personal carbon trading, price
A decade after the publication of seminal papers on personal carbon trading (PCT), few empirical studies on its implementation exist. Investigating how to design, set up and implement a PCT scheme for a community or country raises several difficulties. For instance, it is unclear how to introduce a reduction rate of CO2 allowances to ensure a steady decrease in CO2 emissions from households. Computational approaches have been introduced to address these challenges of PCT by providing an opportunity to test counterfactual scenarios. Among the benefits of an agent-based modeling approach (ABM) is the potential to directly address dynamic developments and introduce counterfactual situations. In this paper, we review existing modeling approaches and present an ABM for PCT. With simulations of an artificial population of 1000 and 30,000 agents, we address questions on the price and reduction rate of allowances. A key contribution of our model is the inclusion of an adaptive reduction rate,... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fracture face damage, horizontal well, permeability anisotropy, reorientation fracture, semi-analytical rate decline solutions, tight reservoir
Refracturing treatment is an economical way to improve the productivity of poorly or damaged fractured horizontal wells in tight reservoirs. Fracture reorientation and fracture face damage may occur during refracturing treatment. At present, there is still no report on the rate decline solution for refractured horizontal wells in tight reservoirs. In this work, by taking a semi-analytical method, traditional rate decline and Blasingame-type rate decline solutions were derived for a refractured horizontal well intercepted by multiple reorientation fractures with fracture face damage in an anisotropic tight reservoir. The accuracy and reliability of the traditional rate decline solution were verified and validated by comparing it with a classic case in the literature and a numerical simulation case. The effects of fracture reorientation and fracture face damage on the rate decline were investigated in depth. These investigations demonstrate that fracture face damage is not conducive to i... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Bayesian reinforcement learning, Machine Learning, microgrid, smart grid
Microgrids are empowered by the advances in renewable energy generation, which enable the microgrids to generate the required energy for supplying their loads and trade the surplus energy to other microgrids or the macrogrid. Microgrids need to optimize the scheduling of their demands and energy levels while trading their surplus with others to minimize the overall cost. This can be affected by various factors such as variations in demand, energy generation, and competition among microgrids due to their dynamic nature. Thus, reaching optimal scheduling is challenging due to the uncertainty caused by the generation/consumption of renewable energy and the complexity of interconnected microgrids and their interplay. Previous works mainly rely on modeling-based approaches and the availability of precise information on microgrid dynamics. This paper addresses the energy trading problem among microgrids by minimizing the cost while uncertainty exists in microgrid generation and demand. To th... [more]

Włodzimierz Andrzej Bednarek
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hanging sleeper, jointless railway track, railway track irregularity simulation
The purpose of the following paper is to present the author’s experimental field investigations of a jointless railway track subjected to a generated imperfection and analysis of track response to applied static loads. An optical measurement system, Pontos, was used for the static and dynamic analysis of the track’s deflections in 3D. The investigations allow us to recommend a direct application of this system for the non-contact measurement, visualization and analysis of simulated defects in the jointless track, as presented by the author. It is stated that simulation of an effect called the hanging sleeper, a short irregularity in the railway track with the initial parameters provided (a gap and a length of irregularity), is possible. The proposed method, based on the measurement in the loaded track (a static load from the locomotive wheels), allows for a description of the effect of the changing track support condition. Moreover, it also proves its usefulness for the analysis of the... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: actuator, co-simulation, computational electromagnetics, contactor
To ensure the reliability of power supply, a dual power supply structure appears in the power distribution system. Power supply switching is a complex physical process. This paper presents a novel model of electromechanical contactors. This model can simulate the multi-physics process of power switching. This article completes the simulation framework for power switching through contactors for the first time. Among them, the structural topology for contactors is also proposed. On the basis of the novel structure topology, an equivalent magnetic circuit model is established to calculate the relationship between driving force, flux linkage, current, and displacement. Then, a co-simulation model is established between the above equations and Adams to obtain the speed characteristics and flight time of the contactor. Subsequently, through the use of Fluent and its secondary development, a magnetohydrodynamic model is established, and the above-mentioned velocity characteristics are importe... [more]

Keywords: capacitive sensor, integrated readout circuit, MEMS accelerometer, temperature drift, thermal measurements
In this work, we analysed the difference between the measurement and simulation results of thermal drift of a custom designed capacitive MEMS accelerometer. It was manufactured in X-FAB XMB10 technology together with a dedicated readout circuit in X-FAB XP018 technology. It turned out that the temperature sensitivity of the sensor’s output is nonlinear and particularly strong in the negative Celsius temperature range. It was found that the temperature drift is mainly caused by the MEMS sensor and the influence of the readout circuit is minimal. Moreover, the measurements showed that this temperature dependence is the same regardless of applied acceleration. Simulation of the accelerometer’s model allowed us to estimate the contribution of post-manufacturing mismatch on the thermal drift; for our sensor, the mismatch-induced drift accounted for about 6% of total thermal drift. It is argued that the remaining 94% of the drift could be a result of the presence of residual stress in the st... [more]

Keywords: conduction and convection, interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM), lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN)
A 40 kW−4000 rpm interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) applied to an electric vehicle (EV) is introduced as the study object in this paper. The main work of this paper is theoretical derivation and validation of the first-order and multi-order transient lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) for the development of a fast thermal model. Based on the first-order LPTN built, the study finds that the heat transfer coefficient of fluid and thickness of the air gap layer are the main influencing factors for the final temperature and time of reaching the steady state. The larger the heat transfer coefficient of fluid is, the lower the steady node temperature is. The smaller the air layer thickness is, the lower the steady node temperature is. The multi-order LPTN theory is further deduced based on the extension of the first-order LPTN. For the constant load and rectangular periodic load, transient node temperatures of the IPMSM are obtained by modeling and solving the first o... [more]

Keywords: carbon production, economic analysis, hydrogen production, methane decomposition, molten salt, process simulation
Although steam methane reforming (CH4 + 2H2O → 4H2 + CO2) is the most commercialized process for producing hydrogen from methane, more than 10 kg of carbon dioxide is emitted to produce 1 kg of hydrogen. Methane pyrolysis (CH4 → 2H2 + C) has attracted much attention as an alternative to steam methane reforming because the co-product of hydrogen is solid carbon. In this study, the simultaneous production of hydrogen and separable solid carbon from methane was experimentally achieved in a bubble column filled with molten potassium chloride. The melt acted as a carbon-separating agent and as a pyrolytic catalyst, and enabled 40 h of continuous running without catalytic deactivation with an apparent activation energy of 277 kJ/mole. The resultant solid was purified by water washing or acid washing, or heating at high temperature to remove salt residues from the carbon. Heating the solid product at 1200 °C produced the highest purity carbon (97.2 at%). The economic feasibility of methane py... [more]
A Novel Low Voltage Selective Circuit Breaker with Additional Current Path

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: circuit breakers, selectivity coordination
The subject of the article is a description of the operating principle of the new proposal of the selective circuit breaker, which is an extension of the existing selective devices. The solution proposed in the article allows one to increase the selectivity range of classic selective circuit breakers. In the case of networks with high values of short-circuit loop impedance, operating at reduced supply voltage, the proposed solution will not limit the short-circuit current too excessively as it is in the case of classic solutions. This advantage will allow for the correct reaction of the protections preceding them. The article presents the structure and analysis of the selection of parameters of the proposed solution. The results of simulation calculations have also been illustrated.
Research on Dynamic Modeling of KF Algorithm for Detecting Distorted AC Signal
Haoyao Nie, Xiaohua Nie
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distorted AC signal, Kalman filter, orthogonal vector dynamic model, phase angle dynamic model, sampling cycle, state noise covariance
Kalman filter (KF) is often based on two models, which are phase angle vector (PAV) model and orthogonal vector (OV) model, in the application of distorted grid AC signal detection. However, these two models lack rigorous and detailed derivation from the principle of dynamic modeling. This paper presents a phase angle vector dynamic (PAVD) model and an orthogonal vector dynamic (OVD) model, which are combined with Kalman filter for detecting distorted grid AC signal. They reveal that the state noise covariance of the dynamic model−based KF is related to the sampling cycle, and overcome the defect of more detecting error for conventional model−based KF. Experiment and evaluation results show that the proposed KF algorithms are reasonable and effective. Therefore, this paper contributes a guiding significance for the application of KF algorithm in harmonic detection.

Keywords: blinders, out-of-step blocking, out-of-step tripping, power swing detector
Modern distance relays have integrated numerous protection functions, including power-swing blocking and out-of-step or pole-slip tripping functions. The main purpose of the power-swing blocking function is to differentiate faults from power swings and block distance or other relay elements from operating during stable or unstable power swings. Most power-swing blocking elements are based on traditional methods that monitor the positive sequence impedance rate. The required settings for the power-swing blocking elements could be difficult to calculate in many applications, particularly those where fast swings can be expected. For these cases, extensive stability studies are necessary to determine the fastest rate of possible power swings. This paper presents a detailed step-by-step method for settings calculation of out-of-step (OOS) protection, both blocking and tripping functions considering a generic two-source system. Then the method is applied to define the protection relay settin... [more]

Keywords: electrical and thermal stresses, HVDC grid protection, hybrid HVDC circuit breaker, multi-terminal HVDC transmission systems
One of the technical challenges that needs to be addressed for the future of the multi-terminal high voltage direct current (M-HVDC) grid is DC fault isolation. In this regard, HVDC circuit breakers (DCCBs), particularly hybrid circuit breakers (H-DCCBs), are paramount. The H-DCCB, proposed by the ABB, has the potential to ensure a reliable and safer grid operation, mainly due to its millisecond-level current interruption capability and lower on-state losses as compared to electromechanical and solid-state based DCCBs. This paper aims to study and evaluate the operational parameters, e.g., electrical, and thermal stresses on the IGBT valves and energy absorbed by the surge arrestors within H-DCCB during different DC fault scenarios. A comprehensive set of modeling requirements matching with operational conditions are developed. A meshed four-terminal HVDC test bench consisting of twelve H-DCCBs is designed in PSCAD/EMTDC to study the impacts of the M-HVDC grid on the operational parame... [more]

Keywords: concentrating solar, CPVT, hybrid collector, Modelling, spectral splitting
Concentrating photovoltaic-thermal (CPVT) collectors have to face the challenge of contrary temperature requirements in the single receiver parts. The PV cells require low temperatures to achieve high efficiency, whereas the thermal part should generate high temperatures for providing industrial heat. The approach of “Spectral Splitting” can offer a solution for compact CPVT receivers; however, a clear quantification of the expected conversion efficiency is difficult. Therefore, this paper describes a modelling methodology for obtaining electrical and thermal performance parameters for a Spectral Splitting configuration using semiconductor-doped glass combined with appropriate heat transfer fluid. The PV technologies c-Si, CIGS and CdTe are considered. The presented model yields distinct results for maximising the electrical efficiency, calculates the reduction in waste heat dissipation within the cells and assesses the impacts of concentration factor and cell temperature. March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coasting, electric locomotive, energy saving, Optimization, railway, traction energy, train driving cycle simulation
The main goal of this work is the evaluation of the energy saving achievable in railway drive when using the coasting technique extensively, with reference to a practical case of the Italian railway network taken as an example. This technique consists in exploiting the kinetic energy accumulated by the running train whenever possible. To implement a driving style on purpose, the only driver contribution is not enough; indeed, it is necessary to provide an embedded automatic calculation control system. In the paper, an algorithm has been developed to evaluate the energy absorption of railway locomotives during the normal service and validated on a real railway line. The proposed hardware and software system could be implemented aboard the train, allowing motion data processing in real-time. Speed, time intervals and power absorption for a given path are calculated; then, the best coasting parameters are estimated to maximize the energy savings. In particular, the case study presented in... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, energy separation, Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube, tangential nozzle
Despite the application of vortex tubes for cooling, separating gas mixtures, vacuuming, etc., the mechanism of energy separation in vortex tubes remains an object of discussion. This paper studies the effect of secondary swirling in supersonic flows on the energy separation of monatomic and diatomic gases. The approach used is a numerical solution of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, closed by the Reynolds Stress Model turbulence model. The modelling provided is for a self-vacuuming vortex tube with air, helium, argon, and carbon dioxide. According to the results of the calculations, the effect of secondary swirling is inherent only in viscous gases. A comparison was made between obtained total temperature difference, the level of secondary swirling and power losses on expansion from the nozzle, compression shocks, friction, turbulence, and energy costs to develop cascaded swirl structures. Our results indicate that helium and argon have the highest swirling degree and, c... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), gas release, impinging jet, Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), Uncertainty Quantification
Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) of Oil & Gas installations implies modeling accidents’ evolution. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is one way to do this, and off-the-shelf tools are available, such as FLACS developed by Gexcon US and KFX developed by DNV-GL. A recent model based on ANSYS Fluent, named SBAM (Source Box Accident Model) was proposed by the SEADOG lab at Politecnico di Torino. In this work, we address one major concern related to the use of CFD tools for accident simulation, which is the relevant computational demand that limits the number of simulations that can be performed. This brings with it the challenge of quantifying the uncertainty of the results obtained, which requires performing a large number of simulations. Here we propose a procedure for the Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) of FLACX, KFX and SBAM, and show its performance considering an accidental high-pressure methane release scenario in a realistic offshore Oil & Gas (O & G) platform deck. The novelty... [more]

Keywords: 2D and 3D finite element analysis, 3D computational fluid dynamics, experimental test, optimal design, Optimization, wound rotor synchronous machine
In this paper, a complete methodology to design a modular brushless wound rotor synchronous machine is proposed. From a schedule of conditions and a chosen structure (with 7 phases, 7 slots and 6 poles), a non-linear and non-convex optimization problem is defined and solved using NOMAD (a derivative free local optimization code): the external volume is minimized under some constraints, which are the average torque equal to 5 Nm, the torque ripple less than 5%, the efficiency greater than 94%, and the surface temperature less than 85 °C. The constraints have to be computed using 2D-finite element simulations in order to reduce the CPU-time consumption for each NOMAD iteration. Moreover, a relaxation of this optimization problem makes it possible to provide an efficient starting point for NOMAD. Thus, a good optimal design is obtained, and it is then validated by using 3D electromagnetic and thermic numerical methods. These numerical verifications show that, inside the end-winding, the l... Keywords: gas movement, new generation multi-channel cyclone separator, particulate matter, symmetrical body, viscosity models
The work of traditional cyclones is based on the separation of solid particles using only the centrifugal forces. Therefore, they do not demonstrate high gas-cleaning efficiency, particularly in the cases where gas flows are polluted with fine solid particles (about 20 µm in diameter). The key feature of a new-generation multi-channel cyclone separator’s structure is that its symmetrical upgraded curved elements, with openings cut with their plates bent outwards, make channels for the continuous movement of the gas flows from the inflow opening to the central axis. The smoke flue of the vertical gas outflow is located near the cover of the separating chamber. The present work is aimed at studying the applicability of two various viscosity models and their modified versions to simulate aerodynamic processes in an innovative design for a multi-channel cyclone separator with a single inflow, using the computational fluid dynamics. The research results obtained in the numerical simulation... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Conversion, energy system model, energy transition
We present an easily accessible model for dispatch and expansion planning of the German multi-modal energy system from today until 2050. The model can be used with low efforts while comparing favorably with historic data and other studies of future developments. More specifically, the model is based on a linear programming partial equilibrium framework and uses a compact set of technologies to ease the comprehension for new modelers. It contains all equations and parameters needed, with the data sources and model assumptions documented in detail. All code and data are openly accessible and usable. The model can reproduce today’s energy mix and its CO2 emissions with deviations below 10%. The generated energy transition path, for an 80% CO2 reduction scenario until 2050, is consistent with leading studies on this topic. Our work thus summarizes the key insights of previous works and can serve as a validated and ready-to-use platform for other modelers to examine additional hypotheses.

Keywords: aerodynamic coefficients, airborne wind energy system, estimation before modeling, vortex lattice method
The validity of using a low-computational-cost model for the aerodynamic characterization of Airborne Wind Energy Systems was studied by benchmarking a three-dimensional Unsteady Panel Method (UnPaM) with experimental data from a flight test campaign of a two-line Rigid-Framed Delta kite. The latter, and a subsequent analysis of the experimental data, provided the evolution of the tether tensions, the full kinematic state of the kite (aerodynamic velocity and angular velocity vectors, among others), and its aerodynamic coefficients. The history of the kinematic state was used as input for UnPaM that provided a set of theoretical aerodynamic coefficients. Disparate conclusions were found when comparing the experimental and theoretical aerodynamic coefficients. For a wide range of angles of attack and sideslip angles, the agreement in the lift and lateral force coefficients was good and moderate, respectively, considering UnPaM is a potential flow tool. As expected, UnPaM predicts a much... [more]

This paper presents an application for the monitoring of leaks in flood embankments by reconstructing images in electrical tomography using logistic regression machine learning methods with elastic net regularisation, PCA and wave preprocessing. The main advantage of this solution is to obtain a more accurate spatial conductivity distribution inside the studied object. The described method assumes a learning system consisting of multiple equations working in parallel, where each equation creates a single point in the output image. This enables the efficient reconstruction of spatial images. The research focused on preparing, developing, and comparing algorithms and models for data analysis and reconstruction using a proprietary electrical tomography solution. A reliable measurement solution with sensors and machine learning methods makes it possible to analyse damage and leaks, leading to effective information and the eventual prevention of risks.
