Keywords: hydraulic flow units, Machine Learning, Nam Con Son Basin, permeability
The test study area is the Miocene reservoir of Nam Con Son Basin, offshore Vietnam. In the study we used unsupervised learning to automatically cluster hydraulic flow units (HU) based on flow zone indicators (FZI) in a core plug dataset. Then we applied supervised learning to predict HU by combining core and well log data. We tested several machine learning algorithms. In the first phase, we derived hydraulic flow unit clustering of porosity and permeability of core data using unsupervised machine learning methods such as Ward’s, K mean, Self-Organize Map (SOM) and Fuzzy C mean (FCM). Then we applied supervised machine learning methods including Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Boosted Tree (BT) and Random Forest (RF). We combined both core and log data to predict HU logs for the full well section of the wells without core data. We used four wells with six logs (GR, DT, NPHI, LLD, LSS and RHOB) and 578 cores from the Miocene reservoir to train, validate... [more]
Energy Savings of Simultaneous Heating and Cooling System According to Indoor Set Temperature Changes in the Comfort Range
Dae-Uk Shin, Chang-Ho Jeong
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy savings, indoor set temperature, load balancing, simultaneous heating and cooling, thermal comfort
This study was conducted to derive the amount of energy savings when applying the method of making the load similar by changing the set temperature of the room in the building to which the simultaneous heating and cooling (SHC) system is applied. Energy savings were derived through theoretical analysis and comparisons through static simulations were performed to verify the proposed method. As a result, the energy savings are proportional to the energy limit that can be additionally input to the SHC and is proportional to the ratio of the coefficient of performance (COP) difference between the SHC and auxiliary heat source and the auxiliary heat source COP. That is, to increase the amount of energy savings, the maximum possible energy should be input for the SHC, or the SHC COP must be greater than the auxiliary heat source COP. In addition, comfort can be achieved stably by varying the set room temperature in a room with a small load. When a heat storage tank is installed or changing t... [more]

Keywords: carbon emissions, decarbonization, district heating, Energy Efficiency, Hubgrade
Harmful emissions from heating installations have recently received public attention in Poland. Polish municipalities mainly take their heat from local district heating networks with large-scale coal-fired heat sources. Today, transition to nonemissive sources on this scale would be impractical. The easiest way to reduce carbon emissions is to limit heat consumption, but at the same time, to preserve thermal comfort, the application of smart technologies is necessary. Veolia operates on 71 district heating systems in Poland, including Warsaw, Lodz, and Poznan. Since heat consumption in Warsaw and Metropolis GZM is at a similar level, this is a case study of Hubgrade automation system application within the Warsaw district heating network. This paper also presents results of simulation of harmful emission reduction potential in Metropolis GZM. Simulation results show that there is a potential for saving approximately 275 kt of CO2 for the whole Metropolis GZM.

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building performance, cob-building, dynamic simulation, earth construction, heating energy, sustainable thermal comfort
This paper emphasizes the experimental and numerical study of new cob mixes used for insulation and load bearing wall elements. The experimental study provides complete datasets of thermal properties of the new walling materials, using cob with density ranging from 1107 kg/m3 to 1583 kg/m3 for structural walls and less than 700 kg m−3 for insulation walls. Various mixes of French soils and fibres (reed, wheat straw, hemp shiv, hemp straw, and flax straw) with different water contents are studied. The lowest average thermal conductivity is obtained for the structural cob mix prepared of 5% wheat straw and 31% of water content. The insulation mix, prepared with 25% reed and 31% water content, has the lowest thermal conductivity. Investigation of diffusivity, density, and heat capacity shows that, when thermal conductivity is lower than 0.4 W m−1 K−1, the decrease in cob density leads to better insulation values and higher heat capacity. Little variation is noticed regarding the density a... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adhered roofs, building energy modeling, cool roofs, energy cost savings, insulation, mechanically attached roofs, thermal performance
While it is well-known that cool roofs can efficiently reduce cooling demand in buildings, their overall energy performance in mixed and cold climates has been a topic of debate. This paper presents a comprehensive simulation study to evaluate the combined impact of roof reflectivity, insulation level, and construction type (adhered vs attached) on annual energy demand and energy costs in the United States, for different buildings and climate zones. EnergyPlus was used to model three building types (retail, office, and school buildings) for the 16 most climate-representative locations in the US using typical reflectivity and insulation values. The results show that (i) roof reflectivity is equally important to roof insulation in warm climates; (ii) for low-rise offices and schools, the benefits of reflective roofs vs dark-colored roofs are clear for all US climatic zones, with higher savings in warm climates; (iii) for big-box-retail buildings, reflective roofs perform better except fo... Keywords: actual measurement, passive ventilation, residential house, Simulation, solar air heater, ventilation load
In this paper, the authors examined the technology to maximize the use of renewable energy. Passive ventilation systems are expected to reduce the energy consumption of the fan and the maintenance burden. In addition, the wall-mounted solar air heater can supply thermal energy without using any energy at all. Therefore, this paper presents a “passive ventilation system with a solar air heater” that combines a passive ventilation system with the solar air heater to preheat the air. This system can reduce the ventilation load. To evaluate the solar air heater performance in a real environment, we developed a simulation for calculating the heat collection capacity of the solar air heater, and then the system was implemented in a real building for verification. The simulation performs hourly unsteady calculations, allowing for accurate evaluation of the annual simulation. Based on the measurement results, the effects of heating load reduction and prediction methods are presented. The solar... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat transfer, large eddy simulation, POD, surface roughness, turbulence
As a consequence of rapid development of additive manufacturing (3D printing) methods, the academic/industrial demand has been continuously increasing. One field of application is the manufacturing of heat exchanging devices using this promising method. In this regard, understanding the underlying mechanisms from a thermo-hydraulic viewpoint becomes important. Therefore, in this study, scale-resolving large eddy simulation (LES) is applied to reveal the flow details in combination with a model of roughness topology occurring in additive manufacturing. To process the transient LES results, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is used to extract the coherent flow structures, and the extended POD is used to rank the flow modes based on thermal importance. The main aim of the present work is to go beyond the conventionally applied methodologies used for the evaluation of surface roughness, i.e., averaged numerical study or experimental overall performance evaluation of the flow/thermal re... Chengzao Han, Yun Long, Mohan Xu, Bin Ji
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cavitation, entropy production, large eddy simulation (LES), verification and validation (V&V), vorticity transport equation, waterjet pump
In this paper, large eddy simulation (LES) was adopted to simulate the cavitating flow in a waterjet pump with emphasis on the tip clearance flow. The numerical results agree well with the experimental observations, which indicates that the LES method can make good predictions of the unsteady cavitating flows around a rotor blade. The LES verification and validation (LES V&V) analysis was used to reveal the influence of cavitation on the flow structures. It can be found that the LES errors in cavitating region are larger than those in the non-cavitating area, which is mainly caused by more complicated cavitating and tip clearance flow structures. Further analysis of the interaction between the cavitating and vortex flow by the relative vorticity transport equation shows that the stretching, dilatation and baroclinic torque terms have major effects on the generation and transport of vortex structure. Meanwhile the Coriolis force term and viscosity term also exacerbate the vorticity tran... [more]

Keywords: Gramian angular field, multistate appliances, nonintrusive load monitoring, overlapping sliding window, recurrence plot
In this paper, a time-lapse image method is proposed to improve the classification accuracy for multistate appliances with complex patterns based on nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM). A log-likelihood ratio detector with a maxima algorithm was applied to construct a real-time event detection of home appliances. Moreover, a novel image-combining method was employed to extract information from the data based on the Gramian angular field (GAF) and recurrence plot (RP) transformations. From the simulation results, it was confirmed that the classification accuracy can be increased by up to 30% with the proposed method compared with the conventional approaches in classifying multistate appliances.

Keywords: CO2 EOR, CO2 storage, injection optimization, Machine Learning, proxy modelling, reservoir management, waterflooding
Optimal injector selection is a key oilfield development endeavor that can be computationally costly. Methods proposed in the literature to reduce the number of function evaluations are often designed for pattern level analysis and do not scale easily to full field analysis. These methods are rarely applied to both water and miscible gas floods with carbon storage objectives; reservoir management decision making under geological uncertainty is also relatively underexplored. In this work, several innovations are proposed to efficiently determine the optimal injector location under geological uncertainty. A geomodel ensemble is prepared in order to capture the range of geological uncertainty. In these models, the reservoir is divided into multiple well regions that are delineated through spatial clustering. Streamline simulation results are used to train a meta-learner proxy. A posterior sampling algorithm evaluates injector locations across multiple geological realizations. The proposed... [more]

Keywords: computational complexity, demand side management, Energy Efficiency, Machine Learning, multiclassification, non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM), smart building energy management systems (SBEM)
Next-generation power systems aim at optimizing the energy consumption of household appliances by utilising computationally intelligent techniques, referred to as load monitoring. Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) is considered to be one of the most cost-effective methods for load classification. The objective is to segregate the energy consumption of individual appliances from their aggregated energy consumption. The extracted energy consumption of individual devices can then be used to achieve demand-side management and energy saving through optimal load management strategies. Machine learning (ML) has been popularly used to solve many complex problems including NILM. With the availability of the energy consumption datasets, various ML algorithms have been effectively trained and tested. However, most of the current methodologies for NILM employ neural networks only for a limited operational output level of appliances and their combinations (i.e., only for a small number of classe... Keywords: computational physical kinetics, vacuum arc, vacuum breakdown, vacuum electronics
This paper is devoted to the study of collisionless multicomponent plasma expansion in vacuum discharges. Based on the fundamental principles of physical kinetics formulated for vacuum discharge plasma, an answer is given to the following question: What is the main mechanism of cathode plasma transport from cathode to anode, which ensures non-thermal metallic positive ion movement? Theoretical modeling is provided based on the Vlasov−Poisson system of equations for a current flow in a planar vacuum discharge gap. It was shown that the non-thermal plasma expansion is of a purely electrodynamic nature, caused by the formation of a “potential hump” in the interelectrode space and its subsequent movement under certain conditions consistent with plasma electrodynamic transportation. The presented results reveal two cases of the described phenomenon: (1) the dynamics of single-component cathode plasma and (2) multicomponent plasma (consisting of multiple charged ions) expansion.

Keywords: CO2 refrigeration, decomposition, design, finned-tube, heat exchanger, Modelling
Carbon dioxide trans-critical refrigeration systems have been deeply investigated over the last years, with the aim to improve their performance by using several possible technical solutions. However, most of them lead to a more complex and expensive system, and therefore a trade-off is always needed to identify the best viable solution. Therefore, many efforts have also been focused on the study of a critical component of the basic carbon dioxide trans-critical cycle, which is the gas cooler, especially by numerical simulations. This work shows a new flexible approach to numerically model an air-cooled finned-tube CO2 trans-critical gas cooler integrating a Top-Down methodology with a Finite Difference Method to solve the governing equation of the thermodynamic processes involved. The model was developed to reproduce the behavior of an experimental CO2 refrigeration system, which provided the experimental data used for its validation. In detail, the model showed a good agreement with... [more]
A Modification of Newton−Raphson Power Flow for Using in LV Distribution System

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: branch model, distribution system, Newton–Raphson method, unbalanced
The Newton−Raphson (NR) method is still frequently applied for computing load flow (LF) due to its precision and quadratic convergence properties. To compute LF in a low voltage distribution system (LVDS) with unbalanced topologies, each branch model in the LVDS can be simplified by defining the neutral and ground voltages as zero and then using Kron’s reduction to transform into a 3 × 3 branch matrix, but this decreases accuracy. Therefore, this paper proposes a modified branch model that is also reduced into a 3 × 3 matrix but is derived from the impedances of the phase-A, -B, -C, neutral, and ground conductors together with the grounding resistances, thereby increasing the accuracy. Moreover, this paper proposes improved LF equations for unbalanced LVDS with both PQ and PV nodes. The improved LF equations are based on the polar-form power injection approach. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the modified branch model and the improved LF equations.

Keywords: extension distance, oil feed rate, Simulation, tiny oil ignition burner, wall overheating
To solve the overheating problem of tiny oil ignition burners’ walls during the firing-up process in a 330 MWe tangentially pulverized coal-fired boiler, a numerical model of a tiny oil ignition burner was carefully built considering combustion, gas−solid flow, and heat transfer. Then, the burner location and oil feed rate were optimized based on the model to prevent the burner’s walls from overheating. The effects of the oil gun extension distance (100, 200, 300, 400, 500 mm) and oil feed rate (160, 140, 120, 100, 80, 70, 60 kg/h) on coal ignition performance and burner wall temperature were carefully investigated. The simulation results showed good agreement with the measured results. The results indicated that decreasing the oil gun distance within the burner diminished the flame length of the co-combustion of oil and pulverized coal, thus lowering the burner wall temperature. Decreasing the oil feed rate appropriately could also reduce the burner wall temperature without influencin... [more]

Keywords: building energy simulation, historical buildings retrofit, IDA ICE, LCC, low-E window films
Low-emissivity (low-E) window films are designed to improve the thermal comfort and energy performance of buildings. These films can be applied to different glazing systems without having to change the whole window. This makes it possible to apply films to windows in old and historical buildings for which preservation regulations often require that windows should remain unchanged. This research aims to investigate the impacts of low-E window films on the energy performance and thermal comfort of a three-story historical stone building in the cold climate of Sweden using the simulation software “IDA ICE”. On-site measurements were taken to acquire thermal and optical properties of the windows. This research shows that the application of the low-emissivity window film on the outward-facing surface of the inner pane of the double-glazed windows helped to reduce heat loss through the windows in winter and unwanted heat gains in summer by almost 36% and 35%, respectively. This resulted in a... [more]
Photovoltaic Energy All-Day and Intra-Day Forecasting Using Node by Node Developed Polynomial Networks Forming PDE Models Based on the L-Transformation

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: component model, derivative laplace transformation, local weather modeling, partial differential equation, polynomial network, polynomial PDE conversion
Forecasting Photovoltaic (PV) energy production, based on the last weather and power data only, can obtain acceptable prediction accuracy in short-time horizons. Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) systems usually produce free forecasts of the local cloud amount each 6 h. These are considerably delayed by several hours and do not provide sufficient quality. A Differential Polynomial Neural Network (D-PNN) is a recent unconventional soft-computing technique that can model complex weather patterns. D-PNN expands the n-variable kth order Partial Differential Equation (PDE) into selected two-variable node PDEs of the first or second order. Their derivatives are easy to convert into the Laplace transforms and substitute using Operator Calculus (OC). D-PNN proves two-input nodes to insert their PDE components into its gradually expanded sum model. Its PDE representation allows for the variability and uncertainty of specific patterns in the surface layer. The proposed all-day single-model and... [more]

Keywords: deep-bar effect, equivalent circuits, finite element analysis, induction motors, optimisation
The various measurement procedures for determination of electromagnetic parameters for the induction motor (IM) equivalent circuits including the rotor deep-bar effect were proposed in the literature. One of them is the procedure based on the load curve test (LCT). Since the execution of the LCT can pose some difficulties, especially in industrial conditions, as an alternative, the finite element method (FEM) can be employed to simulate the IM operation under the LCT. In this work we developed the optimisation technique for the finite element (FE) model. This technique is performed with the use of the stator current space-vector components which determine the IM input active and reactive power consumption during no-load operation. Relying on the LCT simulation carried out with the optimised FE model the inductance frequency characteristic can be determined and then used as the reference characteristic in the electromagnetic parameter estimation for the IM equivalent circuit including t... Keywords: convective heat transfer coefficient enhancement, numerical simulation, pyro-breaker, quench protection, superconducting fusion
The conductive components of the pyro-breaker in the quench protection system (QPS) have high current density, a large number of electrical contacts and high thermal flux. The water system needs to meet the requirements of cooling and arc extinguishing at the same time. In a previous study, the bottleneck of the steady-state capacity appeared in the barrel conductor of the commutation section, which has a cylindrical cavity. The thermal stability of the commutation section at 100 kA level was simulated in ANSYS/Workbench. The results indicate a certain level of enhancement of the convective heat transfer coefficient of the cavity is required to reach the current capacity. However, the fluid flow inside the cavity is very complex, and the convective heat transfer coefficient is difficult to calculate. In this paper, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is applied to the optimization of the cooling water system of the pyro-breaker. By studying the enhancement method of convective heat tran... [more]

Granulated chelates are innovative fertilizers that are highly effective and versatile, and they ensure the best start-up effect for plants. The final properties of granules are influenced by the method of their preparation and the used substances. The diameters of the obtained granules, their size range, and the final costs of the produced fertilizer are of great importance. The paper describes granules that were produced using an agglomeration of ZnIDHA in a fluidized bed with the aid of an aqueous solution of this substance with a high dry matter content. Keywords: computational fluid dynamic, enhanced oil recovery, fractured-vuggy reservoir, nitrogen flooding, numerical simulation
A reservoir-scale numerical conceptual model was established according to the actual geological characteristics of a carbonate fractured-vuggy reservoir. Considering the difference in density and viscosity of fluids under reservoir conditions, CFD (computational fluid dynamic) porous medium model was applied to simulate the process of nitrogen displacement in a fractured-vuggy reservoir after water flooding. The effects of gas injection rate, injection mode, and injector−producer location relation were studied. The results show that nitrogen flooding can yield additional oil recovery of 7−15% after water flooding. Low-speed nitrogen injection is beneficial in obtaining higher oil recovery. High speed injection can expand the sweep area, but gas channeling occurs more easily. In gas−water mixed injection mode, there is fluid disturbance in the reservoir. The gas channeling is faster in low injector−high producer mode, while the high injector−low producer mode is beneficial for increasin... [more]

This paper describes the method developed using the Extreme Gradient Boosting (Xgboost) algorithm that allows high-resolution imaging using the ultrasound tomography (UST) signal. More precisely, we can locate, isolate, and use the reflective peaks from the UST signal to achieve high-resolution images with low noise, which are far more useful for the location of points where the reflection occurred inside the experimental tank. Each reconstruction is divided into two parts, estimation of starting points of wave packets of raw signal (SAT—starting arrival time) and image reconstruction via XGBoost algorithm based on SAT matrix. This technology is the basis of a project to design non-invasive monitoring and diagnostics of technological processes. In this paper, we present a method of the complete solution for monitoring industrial processes. The measurements used in the study were obtained with the author’s solution of ultrasound tomography.

Keywords: CFD simulation, compressible flow, full load, phase resonance, pump turbine, wave propagation
In order to understand the complex nature of the system dynamic phenomena, such as the strong vibration and noise caused by blade passage in the pump turbine, a state-of-the-art three-dimensional (3D) compressible transient simulation would be desirable to study the problem in depth. This study investigated the phase resonance (PR) that occurred during a full-load operation in the turbine mode of a pump turbine on a prototype scale. As a first step, the wave reflection at the boundaries, and the influence of the timestep and sound speeds on the behavior of traveling pressure waves inside a spiral casing, were studied. It was found that nonreflective boundary conditions and an appropriately small timestep are critical to capturing the wave reflection and superposition process inside a spiral casing; a certain kind of direct PR risk was detected in its system design. The detected direct PR differed from the well-known PR with two features: firstly, it was almost independent of the sound... [more]

Keywords: high-speed, rail, stiffness, turnout, wear
The operation and maintenance of railroad turnouts for rail vehicle traffic moving at speeds from 200 km/h to 350 km/h significantly differ from the processes of track operation without turnouts, curves, and crossings. Intensive wear of the railroad turnout components (switch blade, retaining rods, rails, and cross-brace) occurs. The movement of a rail vehicle on a switch causes high-dynamic impact, including vertical, normal, and lateral forces. This causes intensive rail and wheel wear. This paper presents the wear of rails and of the needle in a railroad turnout on a straight track. Geometrical irregularities of the track and the generation of vertical and normal forces occurring at the point of contact of the wheel with turnout elements are additionally considered in this study. To analyse the causes of rail wear in turnouts, selected technical−operational parameters were assumed, such as the type of rail vehicle, the type of turnout, and the maximum allowable axle load. The wear p... [more]
