Deep Learning-Based Prediction of Throttle Value and State for Wheel Loaders
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: automation, deep learning, state prediction, throttle prediction, wheel loaders
Accurate prediction of the throttle value and state for wheel loaders can help to achieve autonomous operation, thereby reducing the cost and accident rate. However, existing methods based on a physical model cannot accurately reflect the operator’s driving habits and the interaction between wheel loaders and the environment. In this paper, a deep-learning-based prediction model is developed to predict the throttle value and state for wheel loaders by learning from driving data. Multiple long−short-term memory (LSTM) networks are used to extract the temporal features of different stages during the operation of the wheel loader. Two backward-propagation neural networks (BPNNs), which use the temporal feature extracted by LSTM as the input, are designed to output the final prediction results of throttle value and state, respectively. The proposed prediction model is trained and tested using the data from two different conditions. The end-to-end LSTM prediction model and BPNNs are used as... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CH3NH3SnI3, CuO, HTL, perovskite, SCAPS-1D, WO3
An ideal n-i-p perovskite solar cell employing a Pb free CH3NH3SnI3 absorber layer was suggested and modelled. A comparative study for different electron transport materials has been performed for three devices keeping CuO hole transport material (HTL) constant. SCAPS-1D numerical simulator is used to quantify the effects of amphoteric defect based on CH3NH3SnI3 absorber layer and the interface characteristics of both the electron transport layer (ETL) and hole transport layer (HTL). The study demonstrates that amphoteric defects in the absorber layer impact device performance significantly more than interface defects (IDL). The cell performed best at room temperature. Due to a reduction in Voc, PCE decreases with temperature. Defect tolerance limit for IL1 is 1013 cm−3, 1016 cm−3 and 1012 cm−3 for structures 1, 2 and 3 respectively. The defect tolerance limit for IL2 is 1014 cm−3. With the proposed device structure FTO/PCBM/CH3NH3SnI3/CuO shows the maximum efficiency of 25.45% (Voc =... [more]

A Curvature Compensation Technique for Low-Voltage Bandgap Reference
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bandgap reference, curvature compensation, nonlinear current
Based on the standard 40 nm Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) process, a curvature compensation technique is proposed. Two low-voltage, low-power, high-precision bandgap voltage reference circuits are designed at a 1.2 V power supply. By adding IPTAT (positive temperature coefficient current) and ICTAT (negative temperature coefficient current) to the output resistance, the first-order compensation bandgap voltages can be obtained. Meanwhile, the third high-order compensation current is also superimposed on the same resistance. We make use of the collector current of the bipolar transistor to compensate for the nonlinear term of VBE. The simulation results show that TC (temperature coefficient) of the first circuit reference could be reduced from 29.1 × 10−6/°C to 5.71 × 10−6/°C over the temperature range of −25 to 125 °C after temperature compensation. The second one could be reduced from 17 × 10−6/°C to 5.22 × 10−6/°C.

Effect of HVAC’s Management on Indoor Thermo-Hygrometric Comfort and Energy Balance: In Situ Assessments on a Real nZEB
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, HVAC management, indoor comfort, load matching, monitoring campaign, nZEB
This paper proposes the analysis of real monitored data for evaluating the relationship between occupants’ comfort conditions and the energy balance inside an existing, nearly zero-energy building under different operational strategies for the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system. During the wintertime, the adaptive comfort approach is applied for choosing the temperature setpoint when an air-to-air heat pump provides both heating and ventilation. The results indicate that in very insulated buildings with high solar gains, the setpoint should be decided taking into consideration both the solar radiation and the outdoor temperature. Indeed, when the room has large glazed surfaces, the solar radiation can also guarantee acceptable indoor conditions when a low setpoint (e.g., 18.7 °C) is considered. The electricity consumption can be reduced from 17% to 43% compared to a conventional setpoint (e.g., 20 °C). For the summertime, the analysis suggests the adoption of a dynamic a... [more]

Online Machine Learning of Available Capacity for Vehicle-to-Grid Services during the Coronavirus Pandemic
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coronavirus, deep learning, Machine Learning, online machine learning, V2G, vehicle-to-grid
Vehicle-to-grid services make use of the aggregated capacity available from a fleet of vehicles to participate in energy markets, help integrate renewable energy in the grid and balance energy use. In this paper, the critical components of such a service are described in the context of a commercial service that is currently under development. Key among these components is the prediction of available capacity at a future time. In this paper, we extend a previous work that used a deep learning recurrent neural network for this task to include online machine learning, which enables the network to continually refine its predictions based on observed behaviour. The coronavirus pandemic that was declared in 2020 resulted in closures of the university and substantial changes to the behaviour of the university fleet. In this work, the impact of this change in vehicles usage was used to test the predictions of a network initially trained using vehicle trip data from 2019 with and without online... [more]

CFD Simulation of Hydrogen Generation and Methane Combustion Inside a Water Splitting Membrane Reactor
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD simulation, hydrogen yield, methane combustion, oxygen transport membrane reactor, water splitting
Hydrogen production from water splitting remains difficult due to the low equilibrium constant (e.g., Kp ≈ 2 × 10−8 at 900 °C). The coupling of methane combustion with water splitting in an oxygen transport membrane reactor can shift the water splitting equilibrium toward dissociation by instantaneously removing O2 from the product, enabling the continuous process of water splitting and continuous generation of hydrogen, and the heat required for water splitting can be largely compensated for by methane combustion. In this work, a CFD simulation model for the coupled membrane reactor was developed and validated. The effects of the sweep gas flow rate, methane content and inlet temperature on the reactor performance were investigated. It was found that coupling of methane combustion with water splitting could significantly improve the hydrogen generation capacity of the membrane reactor. Under certain conditions, the average hydrogen yield with methane combustion could increase threefol... [more]

Influencing Factors Evaluation of Machine Learning-Based Energy Consumption Prediction
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy consumption, energy prediction, error curve learning, hybrid model, Machine Learning
Modern computing resources, including machine learning-based techniques, are used to maintain stability between the demand and supply of electricity. Machine learning is widely used for the prediction of energy consumption. The researchers present several artificial intelligence and machine learning-based methods to improve the prediction accuracy of energy consumption. However, the discrepancy between actual energy consumption and predicted energy consumption is still challenging. Various factors, including changes in weather, holidays, and weekends, affect prediction accuracy. This article analyses the overall prediction using error curve learning and a hybrid model. Actual energy consumption data of Jeju island, South Korea, has been used for experimental purposes. We have used a hybrid ML model consisting of Catboost, Xgboost, and Multi-layer perceptron for the prediction. Then we analyze the factors that affect the week-ahead (WA) and 48 h prediction results. Evaluation of Multiyear Weather Data Effects on Hygrothermal Building Energy Simulations Using WUFI Plus
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: heat and moisture transfer, multiyear weather files, whole building simulation
Transient building energy simulations are powerful design tools that are used for the estimation of HVAC demands and internal hygrothermal conditions of buildings. These calculations are commonly performed using a (often dated) typical meteorological year, generated from past weather measurements excluding extreme weather conditions. In this paper the results of multiyear building simulations performed considering coupled Heat and Moisture Transfer (HMT) in building materials are presented. A simple building is simulated in the city of Udine (Italy) using a weather record of 25 years. Performing a multiyear simulation allows to obtain a distribution of results instead of a single number for each variable. The small therm climate change is shown to influence thermal demands and internal conditions with multiyear effects. From this results it is possible to conclude that weather records used as weather files have to be periodically updated and that moisture transfer is relevant in energy... [more]

Modelling Ground Collectors and Determination of the Influence of Technical Parameters, Installation and Geometry on the Soil
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, ground collector, heat extraction
The main objective of this work was to model ground collectors with different parameters and geometries in ANSYS R19.2 and to simulate their operation during the heating season in Slovakia in order to determine their impact on the soil. At the same time, four new geometries in the shape of vertical spirals with diameters of 6, 8 and 10 m were designed and simulated to occupy a smaller area while maintaining performance similar to classical geometries. Due to climate change, heat pumps are becoming an important proxy in the heating of buildings and are an important part of decarbonisation plans; thus, it is essential to adapt them to urban and metropolitan conditions. Ground source heat pumps possess high efficiency but require a lot of space for their collectors. The collector geometries proposed in this work are a combination of horizontal and vertical technologies and are feasible. Only one geometry achieved performance similar to classical geometries: spiral with 10 m diameter. Fact... [more]

Comprehensive and Comparative Analysis of GAM-Based PV Power Forecasting Models Using Multidimensional Tensor Product Splines against Machine Learning Techniques
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
In recent years, as photovoltaic (PV) power generation has rapidly increased on a global scale, there is a growing need for a highly accurate power generation forecasting model that is easy to implement for a wide range of electric utilities. Against this background, this study proposes a PV power forecasting model based on the generalized additive model (GAM) and compares its forecasting accuracy with four popular machine learning methods: k-nearest neighbor, artificial neural networks, support vector regression, and random forest. The empirical analysis provides an intuitive interpretation of the multidimensional smooth trends estimated by the GAM as tensor product splines and confirms the validity of the proposed modeling structure. The effectiveness of GAM is particularly evident in trend completion for missing data, where it is able to flexibly express the tangled trend structure inherent in time series data, and thus has an advantage not only in interpretability but also in impro... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building energy performance, degree hour discomfort, dynamic simulation, energy systems, Optimization, Surrogate Model, thermal system dimensioning
In recent decades, building design and operation have been an important field of study, due to the significant share of buildings in global primary energy consumption and the time that most people spend indoors. As such, multiple studies focus on aspects of building energy consumption and occupant comfort optimization. The scientific community has discerned the importance of operation optimization through retrofitting actions for on-site building energy systems, achieved by the use of simulation techniques, surrogate modeling, as well as the guidance of existing building performance and indoor occupancy standards. However, more knowledge should be attained on the matter of whether this methodology can be extended towards the early stages of thermal system and/or building design. To this end, the present study provides a building thermal system design optimization methodology. A data set of minimum thermal system power, for a typical range of building characteristics, is generated, acco... [more]

Prospect Theory with Bounded Temporal Horizon for Modeling Prosumer Behavior in the Smart Grid
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: demand-side management, energy management, prospect theory, prosumer behavior, smart grid
We study prosumer decision-making in the smart grid in which a prosumer must decide whether to make a sale of solar energy units generated at her home every day or hold (store) the energy units in anticipation of a future sale at a better price. Specifically, we enhance a Prospect Theory (PT)-based behavioral model by taking into account bounded temporal horizons (a time window specified in terms of the number of days) that prosumers implicitly impose on their decision-making in arriving at “hold” or “sell” decisions of energy units. The new behavioral model for prosumers assumes that in addition to the framing and probability weighting effects imposed by classical PT, humans make decisions that will affect their lives within a bounded temporal horizon regardless of how far into the future their units may be sold. Modeling the utility of the prosumer with parameters such as the offered price on a day, the available energy units on a day, and the probabilities of the forecast prices, we... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: co-oxidation, ignition delay, kinetic modeling, low-temperature combustion, ortho-cresol, rapid compression machine, surrogate fuel
The viability of the use of ortho-cresol as a bio-blendstock or antiknock additive from lignocellulosic biomass is assessed; Ignition delays of ortho-cresol within blends with iso-octane are measured with the ULille rapid compression machine, and compared with results from the literature; It is shown that ortho-cresol has a strong inhibiting effect on the reactivity towards ignition, most notably in the Negative Temperature Coefficient region; This effect is found to originate from competition with iso-octane on the OH radicals, where the reactivity of ortho-cresol with these radicals does not lead to radical chain-branching.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: exergy loss, flow boiling, numerical simulation, pressure drop, R290
In this paper, the impact of different factors on the flow boiling of R290 and R22 in double-concentric pipes are investigated through CFD numerical simulations. The numerical studies are performed by changing the inner tube diameter in the range of 3 to 7 mm, the refrigerant velocity between 1 and 5 m/s, the water velocity between 1 and 10 m/s and the saturation temperature in the range of 276 to 283 K. The heat transfer coefficient (HTC), pressure drop and exergy destruction of R290 are determined. The results show that HTC, pressure drop and exergy destruction are significantly impacted by the pipe diameter and the refrigerant velocity, but slightly impacted by water velocity and saturation temperature. Moreover, the exergy loss and pressure drop of R290 are 11.8−13.3% and 4.3−10.2% lower than those of R22. R290 has a lower energy loss than R22 in the evaporation process in the double-concentric pipe. However, the HTC of R290 is 57.3−59.7% lower than that of R22. The HTC of R290 can... [more]

An Efficient Parameter Estimation Algorithm for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: artificial gorilla troops optimizer, Fuel Cells, Modelling, PEMFC
The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is a favorable renewable energy source to overcome environmental pollution and save electricity. However, the mathematical model of the PEMFC contains some unknown parameters which have to be accurately estimated to build an accurate PEMFC model; this problem is known as the parameter estimation of PEMFC and belongs to the optimization problem. Although this problem belongs to the optimization problem, not all optimization algorithms are suitable to solve it because it is a nonlinear and complex problem. Therefore, in this paper, a new optimization algorithm known as the artificial gorilla troops optimizer (GTO), which simulates the collective intelligence of gorilla troops in nature, is adapted for estimating this problem. However, the GTO is suffering from local optima and low convergence speed problems, so a modification based on replacing its exploitation operator with a new one, relating the exploration and exploitation according to t... Coopetitive Platform: Common Benefits in Electricity and Gas Distribution
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coopetition, electricity and gas distribution costs, energy communities, metropolis
Simultaneous collaboration and competition, or coopetition, has so far been studied among firms or non-profit organizations, leaving the public arena largely unexplored. This study focuses on identifying and measuring common benefit generation by local government actors in coopetition. We purposefully choose a metropolis composed of 41 municipalities setting to identify and measure those effects of coopetition that cannot be achieved by individual actors alone. We use real data and tariffs to run simulations that identify common and individual benefits generated in gas and electricity distribution. We find that savings can be achieved by mutualizing energy procurement, even though the distribution of savings is not equal among municipalities. We substantiate that energy communities can act as coopetitive platforms to optimize energy costs of municipalities.

A Method for Assessing the Impact of Changes in Demand for Coal on the Structure of Coal Grades Produced by Mines
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: algorithm simplex, Monte Carlo simulation
Due to the withdrawal of coal from power generation in the EU, mining companies in Poland are forced to adapt their production to the decreasing demand. Forecasting the volume of demand plays an important role in planning the volume of the mine’s output. The demand for coal is constantly changing, with a downward trend. This article presents a method that allows to assess the impact of the variable demand on mine profits and on the volumes of sales of individual coal grades. The proposed method is based on the Monte Carlo simulation and on a solution consisting of the optimization of the production and sales of coal by the mining company (the SIMPLEX algorithm). By using the Monte Carlo simulation to forecast the demand, unlike other commonly used methods, a sufficiently large set of real situations that may occur in the future can be obtained. The results allow us to conclude the extent of desirable adjustment of the structure of the mine’s production to the requirements of its consum... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: artificial thunderstorm cell, electromagnetic radiation spectrum, lightning, model element, Simulation, transmission line monitoring system, upward leader discharges, wavelet
The article represents results of a physical simulation of incomplete upward leader discharges induced on air transmission lines’ elements, using charged artificial thunderstorm cells of negative polarity. The influence of such discharges on closely located model sensors (both of rod and elongated types) of digital monitoring systems, as well as on the models of receiver-transmission systems of local data collection (antennas), was determined. Effect of heterogeneity of electromagnetic field caused by incomplete upward discharges on frequency specter of signals generated on sensors and antennas was estimated. Wavelet analysis was carried out to determine the basic frequency diapasons of such signals. Based on experimental data obtained, suppositions about the extent of influence of nearby incomplete leader discharges on the functioning of currently used systems of transmission lines’ monitoring were made.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: circulating fluidized bed, CO methanation, heat transfer, Simulation
The production of synthetic natural gas (SNG) via methanation has been demonstrated by experiments in bench scale bubbling fluidized bed reactors. In the current work, we focus on the scale-up of the methanation reactor, and a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) is designed with variable diameter according to the characteristic of methanation. The critical issue is the removal of reaction heat during the strongly exothermic process of the methanation. As a result, an interconnected bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) is utilized and connected with the reactor in order to cool the particles and to maintain system temperature. A 3D model is built, and the influences of operating temperature on H2, CO conversion and CH4 yield are evaluated by numerical simulations. The instantaneous and time-averaged flow behaviors are obtained and analyzed. It turns out that the products with high concentrations of CH4 are received at the CFB reactor outlet. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: iron and steel industry, ironmaking, methanation, oxy-fuel combustion, power-to-gas, top gas recycling
The iron and steel industry is the largest energy-consuming sector in the world. It is responsible for emitting 4−5% of the total anthropogenic CO2. As an energy-intensive industry, it is essential that the iron and steel sector accomplishes important carbon emission reduction. Carbon capture is one of the most promising alternatives to achieve this aim. Moreover, if carbon utilization via power-to-gas is integrated with carbon capture, there could be a significant increase in the interest of this alternative in the iron and steel sector. Colombia’s GHG Emissions Reduction Scenario: Complete Representation of the Energy and Non-Energy Sectors in LEAP
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: decarbonization, energy modeling, GHG inventory, INDC, LEAP, long-term scenarios
The signatory countries of the Paris Agreement must submit their updated Intended National Determined Contributions (INDCs) to the UNFCCC secretariat every five years. In Colombia, this activity was historically carried out with a wide set of diverse non-interconnected sector-specific models. Given the complexity of GHG emissions reporting and the evaluation of mitigation actions on a national scale, the need for a centralized platform was evident. Such approach would allow the integration and analysis of potential interactions among sectors, as well as to guarantee the homogeneity of assumptions and input parameters. In this paper, we describe the construction of an integrated bottom-up LEAP model tailored to the Colombian case, which covers all IPCC sectors. An integrated model facilitates capturing synergies and intersectoral interactions within the national GHG emissions system. Hence, policies addressing one sector and influencing others are identified and correctly assessed. Thus... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD analysis, flow visualization, friction factor, heat transfer, LC thermography, PIV anemometry
The main goal of the research presented in this paper was the experimental and numerical analysis of heat enhancement and aerodynamic phenomena during air flow in a channel equipped with flow turbulators in the form of properly configured ribs. The use of ribs intensifies the heat transfer and at the same time increases not only the flow resistance but also the energy costs. Therefore, designing modern heat exchangers with optimal thermal and flow parameters requires the knowledge of the theory of heat exchangers as well as measurement methods and numerical calculations. Bearing in mind the above, the liquid crystal techniques (LCT), particle image velocimetry (PIV) and digital image processing (DIP) for temperature, velocity, friction factor and heat transfer coefficient measurements are presented herein.
