Parametrization of a Modified Friedman Kinetic Method to Assess Vine Wood Pyrolysis Using Thermogravimetric Analysis
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Biomass, Fraser–Suzuki function, isoconversional method, kinetic, Simulation, thermogravimetric analysis.
Common kinetic parameters were obtained for leached and non-leached samples of vine wood biomass. Both samples were considered to have different proportions of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin compositions as a result of the leaching process. The two samples were analyzed in terms of pyrolysis kinetic parameters using non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis. Furthermore, the classic Friedman isoconversional method, a deconvolution procedure using the Fraser−Suzuki function, and a modified Friedman method from a previous study on the delay in conversion degree were satisfactorily applied. The observed difference when the deconvolution technique was applied suggests that the classic Friedman method is not adequate for studying the pyrolysis of individual vine wood biomass components. However, this issue was solved by studying the delay in conversion degree of both biomasses and calculating the kinetic parameters using the resulting information. This procedure was found to be useful... [more]

Electric Vehicles as Flexibility Management Strategy for the Electricity System—A Comparison between Different Regions of Europe
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Batteries, energy system modelling, smart charging, storage, variability management, vehicle-to-grid.
This study considers whether electric vehicles (EVs) can be exploited as a flexibility management strategy to stimulate investments in and operation of renewable electricity under stringent CO2 constraints in four regions with different conditions for renewable electricity (Sweden, Germany, the UK, and Spain). The study applies a cost-minimisation investment model and an electricity dispatch model of the European electricity system, assuming three types of charging strategies for EVs. The results show that vehicle-to-grid (V2G), i.e., the possibility to discharging the EV batteries back to grid, facilitates an increase in investments and generation from solar photovoltaics (PVs) compare to the scenario without EVs, in all regions except Sweden. Without the possibility to store electricity in EV batteries across different days, which is a technical limitation of this type of model, EVs increase the share of wind power by only a few percentage points in Sweden, even if Sweden is a region... A Rebalancing Strategy for the Imbalance Problem in Bike-Sharing Systems
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bike sharing, energy saving, system rebalancing.
Shared bikes have become popular traveling tools in our daily life. The successful operation of bike sharing systems (BSS) can greatly promote energy saving in a city. In BSS, stations becoming empty or full is the main cause of customers failing to rent or return bikes. Some truck-based rebalancing strategies are proposed to solve this problem. However, there are still challenges around the relocation of bikes. The truck operating costs also need to be considered. In this paper, we propose a customer-oriented rebalancing strategy to solve this problem. In our strategy, two algorithms are proposed to ensure the whole system is balanced for as long as possible. The first algorithm calculates the optimal state of each station through the one-dimensional Random Walk Process with two absorption walls. Based on the derived optimal state of each station, the second algorithm recommends the station that has the largest difference between its current state and its optimal state to the customer... An Investigation of the Influence of Gas Injection Rate Shape on High-Pressure Direct-Injection Natural Gas Marine Engines
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, high-pressure direct injection (HPDI), injection rate shape, low-speed engine, Natural Gas.
High-pressure direct-injection (HPDI) natural gas marine engines are widely used because of their higher thermal efficiency and lower emissions. The effects of different injection rate shapes on the combustion and emission characteristics were studied to explore the appropriate gas injection rate shapes for a low-speed HPDI natural gas marine engine. A single-cylinder model was established and the CFD model was validated against experimental data from the literature; then, the combustion and emission characteristics of five different injection rate shapes were analyzed. The results showed that the peak values of in-cylinder pressure and heat release rate profiles of the triangle shape were highest due to the highest maximum injection rate, which occurred in a phase close to the top dead center. The shorter combustion duration of the triangle shape led to higher indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) and NOx emissions compared with other shapes. The higher initial injection rates of t... Investigation of Analysis Methods for Pulse Decay Tests Considering Gas Adsorption
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Adsorption, equilibrium sorption, pseudo-steady-state non-equilibrium sorption, pulse decay test, unconventional reservoirs, unsteady state non-equilibrium sorption.
The pulse decay test is the main method employed to determine permeability for tight rocks, and is widely used. The testing gas can be strongly adsorbed on the pore surface of unconventional reservoir cores, such as shale and coal rock. However, gas adsorption has not been well considered in analysis pulse decay tests. In this study, the conventional flow model of adsorbed gas in porous media was modified by considering the volume of the adsorbed phase. Then, pulse decay tests of equilibrium sorption, unsteady state and pseudo-steady-state non-equilibrium sorption models, were analyzed by simulations. For equilibrium sorption, it is found that the Cui-correction method is excessive when the adsorbed phase volume is considered. This method is good at very low pressure, and is worse than the non-correction method at high pressure. When the testing pressure and Langmuir volume are large and the vessel volumes are small, a non-negligible error exists when using the Cui-correction method. I... [more]

Development of a Thermal Environment Analysis Method for a Dwelling Containing a Colonnade Space through Coupled Energy Simulation and Computational Fluid Dynamics
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, ES, heat loss, large space.
In building design, several approaches have been proposed for coupling computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and energy simulation (ES) to perform analyses of thermal environments. The unsteady analysis of thermal environments within buildings containing offices and colonnade spaces is difficult to perform using an ES that represents the space with a single mass point, owing to excessive predictive heat loss; therefore, CFD has typically been used instead. Although it is possible to divide the space into zones using ES, it leads to excessive predicted heat loss and the prediction of heat movement due to the influence of strong air currents, such as those associated with air conditioners. This behavior is observed because these zones are not detailed mesh divisions. To solve these problems, we proposed a method for calculating the ratio of heat contribution to zones that were pre-divided using CFD followed by the distribution of the total thermal load calculated by ES. In this study, we pr... [more]

A High-Resolution Algorithm for Supraharmonic Analysis Based on Multiple Measurement Vectors and Bayesian Compressive Sensing
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Bayesian compressive sensing (BCS), high-resolution, multiple measurement vectors (MMV), relevance vector machine (RVM), supraharmonic.
Supraharmonics emitted by electrical equipment have caused a series of electromagnetic interference in power systems. Conventional supraharmonic analysis algorithms, e.g., discrete Fourier transform (DFT), have a relatively low frequency resolution with a given observation time. Our previous work supplied a significant improvement on the frequency resolution based on multiple measurement vectors and orthogonal matching pursuit (MMV-OMP). In this paper, an improved algorithm for supraharmonic analysis, which employs Bayesian compressive sensing (BCS) for further improving the frequency resolution, is proposed. The performance of the proposed algorithm on the simulation signal and experimental data show that the frequency resolution can be improved by about a magnitude compared to that of the MMV-OMP algorithm, and the signal frequency estimation error is about 20 times better. In order to identify the signals in two adjacent frequency grids with one resolution, a normalized inner produc... [more]

Energy System Modelling of Carbon-Neutral Hydrogen as an Enabler of Sectoral Integration within a Decarbonization Pathway
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: decarbonization, energy system model, Hydrogen, sectoral integration.
This paper explores the alternative roles hydrogen can play in the future European Union (EU) energy system, within the transition towards a carbon-neutral EU economy by 2050, following the latest policy developments after the COP21 agreement in Paris in 2015. Hydrogen could serve as an end-use fuel, a feedstock to produce carbon-neutral hydrocarbons and a carrier of chemical storage of electricity. We apply a model-based energy system analysis to assess the advantages and drawbacks of these three roles of hydrogen in a decarbonized energy system. To this end, the paper quantifies projections of the energy system using an enhanced version of the PRIMES energy system model, up to 2050, to explore the best elements of each role under various assumptions about deployment and maturity of hydrogen-related technologies. Hydrogen is an enabler of sectoral integration of supply and demand of energy, and hence an important pillar in the carbon-neutral energy system. The results show that the en... [more]

A Feasibility Study of Simulating the Micro-Scale Wind Field for Wind Energy Applications by NWP/CFD Model with Improved Coupling Method and Data Assimilation
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Cressman interpolation, data assimilation, micro-scale, nudging, NWP/CFD model, wind energy.
Understanding the details of micro-scale wind fields is important in the development of wind energy. Research has proven that coupling Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models is a better approach for micro-scale wind field simulation. The main purpose of this work is to improve the NWP/CFD model performance in two parts: (i) developing a new coupling method that is more suitable for complex terrain between the NWP and CFD models, and (ii) applying a data assimilation system in the CFD model. Regarding part (i), in order to solve the problem of great topographical difference at the domain boundaries between the two models, Cressman interpolation is utilized to impose the NWP model wind on the CFD model boundaries. In part (ii), an assimilation method, nudging, to apply assimilation of observations into the CFD model is explored. Based on the Cressman interpolation coupling method, a preliminary implementation of data assimilation is performed. Th... [more]

Thermal Performance Evaluation of an Induced Draft Evaporative Cooling System through Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Interference System (ANFIS) Model and Mathematical Model
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), Dynamic Modelling, electrical flexibility, evaporative cooling, industry.
The shift from fossil fuel to more renewable electricity generation will require the broader implementation of Demand Side Response (DSR) into the grid. Utility processes in industry are suited for this, having a large thermal time constant or buffer, and large electricity consumption. A widespread utility system in industry is an induced draft evaporative cooling tower. Considering the safety aspect, such a process needs to maintain cooling water temperature within predefined safe boundaries. Therefore, in this paper, two modelling methods for the prediction of the basin temperature of an induced draft evaporative cooling tower are proposed. Both a white box and a black box methodology are presented, based on the physical principles of fluid dynamics and adaptive neuro-fuzzy interference system (ANFIS) modelling, respectively. By analysing the accuracy of both models with a focus to cooling tower fan state changes, i.e., DSR purposes, it is shown that the white box model performs best... [more]

Numerical Simulation of Crystalline Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells with Different p-Type a-SiOx Window Layer
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: crystalline silicon, heterojunction, silicon oxide, solar cell.
In this study, p-type amorphous silicon oxide (a-SiOx) films are deposited using a radio-frequency inductively-coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition system. Effects of the CO2 gas flow rate on film properties and crystalline silicon heterojunction (HJ) solar cell performance are investigated. The experimental results show that the band gap of the a-SiOx film can reach 2.1 eV at CO2 flow rate of 10 standard cubic centimeters per minute (sccm), but the conductivity of the film deteriorates. In the device simulation, the transparent conducting oxide and contact resistance are not taken into account. The electrodes are assumed to be perfectly conductive and transparent. The simulation result shows that there is a tradeoff between the increase in the band gap and the reduction in conductivity at increasing CO2 flow rate, and the balance occurs at the flow rate of six sccm, corresponding to a band gap of 1.95 eV, an oxygen content of 34%, and a conductivity of 3.3 S/cm. Experimental and Numerical Examination of Naturally-Aged Foam-VIP Composites
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: natural aging, numerical simulations, temperature-dependent properties, vacuum insulation panels.
This article describes an aging study of a foam-vacuum insulation panel (VIP) composite insulation board installed on a test wall in a natural exposure test facility through a 30-month period. Silica-based VIPs with a polymeric barrier film were used in this study. The study results showed the effectiveness of a VIP-based insulation to reduce the heat gains and losses through a wall compared to regular rigid foam insulation of the same thickness. However, the long-term performance monitoring indicated a gradual decline in the thermal performance of the foam-VIP composite. In addition, one-dimensional numerical models were created to simulate the in situ behavior of the foam-VIP composite. One model utilized constant thermal conductivities of the test wall components and another utilized temperature-dependent thermal conductivities; the latter used measurements of conductivity over temperatures ranging from −15 to 55 °C. The results of the simulations emphasized the need to use both tem... [more]

The Effect of Offshore Wind Capacity Expansion on Uncertainties in Germany’s Day-Ahead Wind Energy Forecasts
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: day-ahead wind energy uncertainties, Extra Trees, Machine Learning, offshore capacity expansion, wind energy forecasts.
Germany has experienced rapid growth in onshore wind capacities over the past two decades. Substantial capacities of offshore wind turbines have been added since 2013. On a local, highly-resolved level, this analysis evaluated if differences in wind speed forecast errors exist for offshore and onshore locations regarding magnitude and variation. A model based on the Extra Trees algorithm is proposed and found to be a viable method to transform local wind speeds and capacities into aggregated wind energy feed-in. This model was used to analyze if offshore and onshore wind power expansion lead to different distributions of day-ahead wind energy forecast errors in Germany. The Extra Trees model results indicate that offshore wind capacity expansion entails an energy forecast error distribution with more frequent medium to high deviations, stemming from larger and more variable wind speed deviations of offshore locations combined with greater geographical concentration of offshore wind tur... Short-Term Electricity Demand Forecasting Using Components Estimation Technique
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: component estimation method, electricity demand, modeling and forecasting, Nordic electricity market, univariate and multivariate time series analysis.
Currently, in most countries, the electricity sector is liberalized, and electricity is traded in deregulated electricity markets. In these markets, electricity demand is determined the day before the physical delivery through (semi-)hourly concurrent auctions. Hence, accurate forecasts are essential for efficient and effective management of power systems. The electricity demand and prices, however, exhibit specific features, including non-constant mean and variance, calendar effects, multiple periodicities, high volatility, jumps, and so on, which complicate the forecasting problem. In this work, we compare different modeling techniques able to capture the specific dynamics of the demand time series. To this end, the electricity demand time series is divided into two major components: deterministic and stochastic. Both components are estimated using different regression and time series methods with parametric and nonparametric estimation techniques. Specifically, we use linear regress... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: model migration strategy, process similarity, scramjet combustors.
Contributed by the low cost, the simulation method is considered an attractive option for the optimization and design of the supersonic combustor. Unfortunately, accurate and satisfactory modeling is time-consuming and cost-consuming because of the complex processes and various working conditions. To address this issue, a mathematical modeling for the combustor on the basis of the clustering algorithm, machine learning algorithm, and model migration strategy is developed in this paper. A general framework for the migration strategy of the combustor model is proposed among the similar combustors, and the base model, which is developed by training the machine learning model with data from the existing combustion processes, is amended to fit the unexampled combustor using the model migration strategy with a few data. The simulation results validate the effectiveness of the development strategy, and the migrated model is proved to be suitable for the new combustor in higher accuracy with l... [more]

Keywords: energy efficient trajectory, foot force distribution, pattern search method, quadruped robot.
Quadruped robots can be used to transport loads or conduct rescue missions on tough terrain. In addition to flexibility and adaptability to complex terrain, the hydraulic driven quadruped robots also have the important characteristic of energy consumption. This paper studies the trot gait motions of the quadruped robot SCalf. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: combustion characteristics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, propulsion, ramjet, solid fuel.
This paper presents a numerical investigation of ignition and combustion stabilization of a novel design of a solid-fuel ramjet (SFRJ) motor with and without swirl flow. The proposed design includes two solid fuels, retaining the simple design of the classic SFRJ. Numerical simulations of unsteady, turbulent, reactive, and swirling flow coupled with solid-fuel pyrolysis have been performed using an in-house CFD solver. Experiments on SFRJ were conducted via a connected-pipe test facility to validate the developed code. Furthermore, the code was validated for chemical reactions, heat diffusion, and swirl flow by using benchmark test cases of shock-induced, semi-infinite plate, and dump combustor with swirl flow, respectively. Then, the proposed and classic designs were simulated for the same inflow conditions and configurations, and the results were analyzed and discussed. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, rotating shaft/tower, URANS, VAWTs.
Aerodynamics of the Darrieus wind turbine is an extremely complex issue requiring the use of very advanced numerical methods. Additional structural components of this device, such as, for example, a rotating shaft disturb the flow through the rotor significantly impairing its aerodynamic characteristics. The main purpose of the presented research is to validate the commonly-used unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier−Stokes (URANS) approach with the shear stress transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model based on the particle image velocimetry (PIV) studies of a two-bladed rotor operating at the moderate tip speed ratio of 4.5. In the present numerical studies, a two-dimensional turbine rotor with a diameter of 1 m was considered. Optimal Economic Dispatch for Integrated Power and Heating Systems Considering Transmission Losses
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: double-λ-iteration algorithm, economic dispatch, integrated power and heating systems, network transmission losses, nonlinear coupling.
To address the problem of the supply−demand imbalance caused by network transmission losses in integrated power and heating systems (IPHS), this paper presents an optimal economic dispatch strategy to minimize system operation cost and realize coordination and optimization between power and heat. Firstly, an innovative economic dispatch model considering transmission losses is developed, where both power and heat transmission losses models are established with good precision together. In addition, the coordination equation is derived from the formulated nonlinear, multi-constrained coupling optimization problem, where the coordination relationship of units’ outputs is clearly analyzed in an analytic way. Then, a double- λ -iteration algorithm is proposed, which can not only effectively solve the nonlinear coupling optimization problem but also decrease computation burden with faster convergence rate. Impedance Modeling and Stability Analysis of the Converters in a Double-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG)-Based System
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: DFIG, harmonic instability, impedance modeling, PWM converter, RTDS.
Harmonic stability of double-fed induction generators (DFIGs) now has become a significant topic because of its harmful impact on power quality issues of the system. Since the double pulse width modulation (PWM) converter is one of the main harmonic sources in DFIGs, it may cause harmonic instability with increasing harmonic contents. Thus, the modeling and stability analyses of PWM converters in DFIGs are essential steps to assess the harmonic stability of DFIGs. Aiming at dual PWM converters, which include the grid side converter (GSC) and the rotor side converter (RSC), this paper divides converters into two parts: circuit modules and control modules. Closed-loop input impedance models of each module are then derived by means of transfer functions. Hence, the stability of the system can be readily predicted through Nyquist diagrams. The contributions of parameters to the system’s harmonic stability are also identified. Finally, time-domain simulations are conducted in a real-time di... [more]

Mining Stress Distribution and Fault-Slip Behavior: A Case Study of Fault-Influenced Longwall Coal Mining
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Coal, fault slip, microseismicity, mining stress, numerical simulation.
It is well accepted that faults have significant impacts on the safe production of underground coal mines; however, the fault-slip mechanism during longwall mining through a fault still needs to be investigated. In this study, the distribution of microseismicity events during panel mining through a fault is analyzed, and 3-dimensional fast Lagrangian analysis of continua was used to study the mining stress distribution and fault-slip behavior under the two different mining directions, i.e., mining the panel through the fault from the footwall, or mining the panel through the fault from the hanging wall. The research shows that when the panel is mined through the fault from the footwall, the shear displacement of the fault is significantly greater than those created by mining the panel through the fault from the hanging wall. Under the two mining directions, the variation behaviors of the normal stress and shear stress on the fault are quite different, and fault-slips mainly occur in fa... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: actuator disk, Computational Fluid Dynamics, misalignment, tidal energy converter, tidal farm.
This study aims to investigate the influence of the current direction on the energy production of a tidal turbines array. It is based on a three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulation of the flow where the turbines are represented with actuator disks. The case study consists of modelling the energy extraction of a small array of turbines (staggered and aligned layouts) placed in the Raz Blanchard (Alderney Race, France). The simulations are performed with hydrodynamic data (current magnitude and direction) representative of a mean tide, with several resistance forces and ambient turbulence intensities. The influence of the current direction on the energy production is highlighted by comparing the simulations forced with the real current direction with those in which the angle of incidence between the incoming flow and the turbine’s axis is “switched off” (bi-directional flow). When the flow is aligned with the turbines’ axis (misalignment “switched off”), the staggered layout produces m... [more]
