Numeric Simulation of Acoustic-Logging of Cave Formations
Fanghui Xu, Zhuwen Wang
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cave formation, P-waves, S-waves, scattered wave, Stoneley wave
The finite difference (FD) method of monopole source is used to simulate the response of full-wave acoustic-logging in cave formations. The effect of the cave in the formation of borehole full-waves was studied. The results show that the radius of cave is not only linearly related to the first arrival of the compressional wave (P-wave), but also to the energy of the shear wave (S-wave). The converted S (S−S wave) and P-waves (S−P wave) are formed when the S-wave encounters the cave. If the source distance is small, the S−S and S−P waves are not separated, and the attenuation of the S-wave is not large, due to superposition of the converted waves. The S−P wave has been separated from the S-wave when the source distance is large, so the attenuation of the S-wave increases. The amplitude of the P and S−waves changes most when the distance of the cave to the borehole wall reaches a certain value; this value is related to the excitation frequency. The amplitude of the Stoneley wave (ST wave... [more]

Lukas Kriechbaum, Philipp Gradl, Romeo Reichenhauser, Thomas Kienberger
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cumulative-exergy consumption minimisation, energy systems optimisation, energy-system design, exergy analysis, multi-energy systems, municipal energy systems, optimal power flow
Efficiency measures and the integration of renewable energy sources are key to achieving a sustainable society. The cumulative exergy consumption describes the resource consumption of a product from the raw material to the final utilisation. It includes the exergy expenses for energy infrastructure as well as the imported energy. Since consumers and renewable potentials are usually in different locations, grid restrictions and energy flows have a significant impact on the optimal energy system design. In this paper we will use cumulative exergy minimisation together with load flow calculations to determine the optimal system design of a multi-cell municipal energy system. Two different load flow representations are compared. The network flow model uses transmission efficiencies for heat, gas and electricity flows. The power flow representation uses a linear DC approximated load flow for electricity flows and a MILP (mixed integer linear programming) representation for heat and gas flow... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: complex terrain, large eddy simulation (LES), local speed-up ratio, wind-tunnel experiment
Our research group is developing computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based software for wind resource and energy production assessments in complex terrain called RIAM-COMPACT (Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, Kyushu University (RIAM)-Computational Prediction of Airflow over Complex Terrain), based on large eddy simulation (LES). In order to verify the prediction accuracy of RIAM-COMPACT, we conduct a wind tunnel experiment that uses a two-dimensional steep ridge model with a smooth surface. In the wind tunnel experiments, airflow measurements are performed using an I-type hot-wire probe and a split film probe that can detect forward and reverse flows. The results of the numerical simulation by LES are in better agreement with the wind tunnel experiment using the split film probe than the results of the wind tunnel experiment using the I-type hot wire probe. Furthermore, we calculate that the two-dimensional ridge model by changing the length in the spanwise direction, and discu... [more]

Keywords: bootstrapping, ESDD, flashover, Machine Learning, NSDD, silicone rubber, surface resistance
There is a vital need to understand the flashover process of polymeric insulators for safe and reliable power system operation. This paper provides a rigorous investigation of forecasting the flashover parameters of High Temperature Vulcanized (HTV) silicone rubber based on environmental and polluted conditions using machine learning. The modified solid layer method based on the IEC 60507 standard was utilised to prepare samples in the laboratory. The effect of various factors including Equivalent Salt Deposit Density (ESDD), Non-soluble Salt Deposit Density (NSDD), relative humidity and ambient temperature, were investigated on arc inception voltage, flashover voltage and surface resistance. The experimental results were utilised to engineer a machine learning based intelligent system for predicting the aforementioned flashover parameters. A number of machine learning algorithms such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Polynomial Support Vector Machine (PSVM), Gaussian SVM (GSVM), Dec... [more]

Michał Pacholczyk, Dariusz Karkosiński
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: actuator line model, Computational Fluid Dynamics, counter-rotating wind turbine, wind energy
A small Counter-Rotating Wind Turbine (CRWT) has been proposed and its performance has been investigated numerically. Results of a parametric study have been presented in this paper. As parameters, the axial distance between rotors and a tip speed ratio of each rotor have been selected. Performance parameters have been compared with reference to a Single Rotor Wind Turbine (SRWT). Simulations were carried out with Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) solver and a Large Eddy Scale approach to model turbulences. An Actuator Line Model has been chosen to represent rotors in the computational domain. Summing up the results of simulation tests, it can be stated that when constructing a CRWT turbine, rotors should be placed at a distance of at least 0.5 D (where D is rotor outer diameter) or more. One can then expect a noticeable power increase compared to a single rotor turbine. Placing the second rotor closer than 0.5 D guarantees a significant increase in power, but in such configurations,... [more]
DPsim—Advancements in Power Electronics Modelling Using Shifted Frequency Analysis and in Real-Time Simulation Capability by Parallelization
Markus Mirz, Jan Dinkelbach, Antonello Monti
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic phasors, power electronics, real-time simulation, shifted frequency analysis
Real-time simulation is an increasingly popular tool for product development and research in power systems. However, commercial simulators are still quite exclusive due to their costs and they face problems in bridging the gap between two common types of power system simulation, conventional phasor based, and electromagnetic transient simulation. This work describes recent improvements to the open source real-time simulator DPsim to address increasingly important use cases that involve power electronics that are connected to the electrical grid and increasing grid sizes. New power electronic models have been developed and integrated into the DPsim simulator together with techniques to decouple the system solution, which facilitate parallelization. The results show that the dynamic phasors in DPsim, which result from shifted frequency analysis, allow the user to combine the characteristics of conventional phasor and electromagnetic transient simulation. Besides, simulation speed up tech... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electronic cooling, entropy generation, numerical simulation, porous media, viscous dissipation
In the present study, the thermal performance of an electronic equipment cooling system is investigated. The heat sink used in the current cooling system consists of a porous channel with a rectangular cross-section that is assumed to be connected directly to the hot surface of an electronic device. In this modeling, a fully developed flow assumption is used. The Darcy−Brinkman model was used to determine the fluid flow field. Since using the local thermal equilibrium (LTE) model may provide results affected by the error in metal foams, in the present research, an attempt has first been made to examine the validity range of this model. The local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) model taking into account the viscous dissipation effect was then used to determine the temperature field. To validate the numerical solution, the computed results were compared with other studies, and an acceptable agreement was observed. Analysis of the temperature field shows that if the fluid−solid-phase therm... [more]

Mathias Müller, Florian Biedenbach, Janis Reinhard
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bottom-up, consumption behavior, distribution grid, household load profile, markov chain, mobility behavior, Simulation
The electrification of the mobility and heating sectors will significantly change the electrical behavior of households in the future. To investigate this behavior, it is important to include the heating and mobility sectors in load profile models. Existing models do not sufficiently consider these sectors. Therefore, this work aims to develop an integrated, consistent model for the electrical and thermal load of private households and their mobility behavior. The model needs to generate regionally distinct profiles depending on the building, household and resident type and should be valid for Germany. Based on a bottom-up approach, a model consisting of four components is developed. In an activity model based on a modified Markov chain process, persons are assigned to activities. The activities are then allocated to devices in the electrical and thermal models. A mobility model assigns distances to the journey activities. The results of the simulation to validate the model shows an av... [more]

Keywords: activated carbon, Adsorption, circulating fluidized bed, glass beads, phenol
A liquid-solid circulating fluidized bed (LSCFB) helps to overcome the shortcomings of conventional fluidized beds by using a particle separation and return system as an integral part of the overall reactor configuration. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out for the removal of phenol from a synthetically prepared solution using fresh activated-carbon-coated glass beads. The morphological features and surface chemistry of the adsorbent were analyzed via SEM and FTIR techniques. The adsorbent dosage, contact time and temperature were varied along with solution pH to assess their effects on the adsorbent performance for phenol removal. Isotherm modeling showed that the phenol removal using the activated-carbon glass beads followed the Langmuir model. Effectively, it was observed at an adsorbent loading of 2.5 g/150 mL of feed volume and a contact time of 3 h produced an 80% efficiency in the batch study. Furthermore, on scaling it up to the column, the desired 98% phenol-removal... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adhesion force, DEM, packing structure, porosity, Simulation, sinter
The effect of ventilation bars on the porosity of a sinter bed charged on a sinter machine was investigated. The behavior of the sinter feed was calculated by discrete element method (DEM) simulation. By taking into account the adhesion force, the sinter feed in the wet state was represented and the simulation parameters were determined to reproduce the experimental values of the angle of repose. The porosity of the sinter bed was calculated, and the mechanism of the formation of the packing structure and the cause of the distribution of porosity in each region were clarified. As a result, it is shown that in the case of shear flow, the higher the powder pressure during flow, the higher the porosity.

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AMI, anomaly pattern detection, energy theft detection, smart meter data stream
Energy theft refers to the intentional and illegal usage of electricity by various means. A number of studies have been conducted on energy theft detection in the advanced metering infrastructure using machine learning methods. However, applying machine learning for energy theft detection has a problem in that it is difficult to obtain enough electricity theft data to train a machine learning model. In this paper, we propose a method based on anomaly pattern detection to detect electricity theft in data streams generated from smart meters. The proposed method requires only normal energy consumption data to train the model. Previous usage records of customers being monitored are not needed for energy theft detection. This characteristic makes the proposed method applicable in real situations. Experiments were conducted using real smart meter data and artificial attack data, including the preprocessing of daily consumption vectors by standard normalization, the construction of an outlier... March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crosswind, direct air-cooled condenser, frozen phenomena, numerical simulation
The frozen phenomenon is unfavorable for the direct air-cooled condensers (DACCs) in a very cold area. The effect of crosswind on frozen phenomena in DACCs at the representative 2 × 350 MW thermal power units was investigated numerically. Results showed that when the crosswind velocity was 4 m·s−1, the number of frozen air-cooled units reached a maximum of six. The increase of vortex range in the air-cooled unit was one of the important reasons to restrain the formation of frozen phenomena at a crosswind velocity from 4 m·s−1 to 12 m·s−1. The frozen phenomena in the DACC disappeared when the crosswind velocity was 12 m·s−1. As the crosswind velocity continued to increase to 28 m·s−1, the frozen region mainly appeared at the position of column 1 row 4, where the airflow rate was the maximum and the inlet air temperature was the minimum among all air-cooled units. This phenomenon occurred because there existed a relatively high-pressure zone near the inlet of each frozen air-cooled unit.... [more]

Keywords: gas recovery, gas saturation, injection-production flow, physical simulation, reservoir heterogeneous, underground gas storage (UGS) in gas field
With the increasing energy demands of current modern society, underground gas storage (UGS) in gas fields is the most popular type of UGS used to meet the seasonal variation of gas consumption. However, compared with gas fields, UGS in gas fields has the characteristics of periodic high-speed injection and production of exploitation modes and operation rules, which causes the rules of gas-water seepage and utilization of reserves to be more particular and complicated. In this paper, based on Wen 23 gas storage, the rules of multicycle injection and production flow and the utilization of UGS pore volume were investigated. The experimental results showed that variation in porosity and permeability caused by injection and production pressure changes in Wen 23 gas storage can be neglected. The pore volume of gas storage and the degree of gas recovery increased gradually in the pre-UGS gas zone, which was higher than that of reservoirs. In the initial stage of UGS operation, the pore volume... [more]

Xiangfei Meng, Pei Zhang, Dahai Zhang
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decision tree (DT), Machine Learning, voltage stability margin (VSM) assessment
In practical power system operation, knowing the voltage stability limits of the system is important. This paper proposes using a decision tree (DT) to extract guidelines through offline study results for assessing system voltage stability status online. Firstly, a sample set of DTs is determined offline by active power injection and bus voltage magnitude (P-V) curve analysis. Secondly, participation factor (PF) analysis and the Relief-F algorithm are used successively for attribute selection, which takes both the physical significance and the classification capabilities into consideration. Finally, the C4.5 algorithm is used to build the DT because it is more suitable for handling continuous variables. A practical power system is implemented to verify the feasibility of the proposed online voltage stability margin (VSM) assessment framework. Study results indicate that the operating guidelines extracted from the DT can help power system operators assess real time VSM effectively.

Keywords: information and communication technology, Modelling, OMNeT++, scalability analysis, smart grid architecture model
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructures are at the heart of emerging Smart Grid scenarios with high penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER). The scalability of such ICT infrastructures is a key factor for the large scale deployment of the aforementioned Smart Grid solutions, which could not be ensured by small-scale pilot demonstrations. This paper presents a novel methodology that has been developed in the scope of the H2020 project InteGrid, which enables the scalability analysis of ICT infrastructures for Smart Grids. It is based on the Smart Grid Architecture Model (SGAM) framework, which enables a standardized and replicable approach. This approach consists of two consecutive steps: a qualitative analysis that aims at identifying potential bottlenecks in an ICT infrastructure; and a quantitative analysis of the identified critical links under stress conditions by means of simulations with the aim of evaluating their operational limits. March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flow, kerogen, molecular simulation, shale oil
As an unconventional energy source, the development of shale oil plays a positive role in global energy, while shale oil is widespread in organic nanopores. Kerogen is the main organic matter component in shale and affects the flow behaviour in nanoscale-confined spaces. In this work, a molecular dynamic simulation was conducted to study the transport behaviour of shale oil within kerogen nanoslits. The segment fitting method was used to characterise the velocity and flow rate. The heterogeneous density distributions of shale oil and its different components were assessed, and the effects of different driving forces and temperatures on its flow behaviours were examined. Due to the scattering effect of the kerogen wall on high-speed fluid, the heavy components (asphaltene) increased in bulk phase regions, and the light components, such as methane, were concentrated in boundary layers. As the driving force increased, the velocity profile demonstrated plug flow in the bulk regions and a h... [more]

Keywords: economic study, exergetic analysis, hydrogen yield, industrial plant, simulation software, steam methane reforming
Steam methane reforming (SMR) for hydrogen production was studied by simulating the reformer and pre-reformer sections. This simulation was validated by using available data taken from a real industrial plant, which enabled precise correlations with the real industrial process to be found. Moreover, the influence of the molar ratio between the raw materials (steam-to-carbon molar ratio, S/C) and the reformer outlet temperature (Tcc) was studied. The energy requirements for the reforming reaction increased with the S/C ratio. The energy needed for developing the reforming reaction also increased with Tcc, but the hydrogen yield when operating with a high S/C ratio and Tcc increased. In addition, an exergetic analysis was carried out to identify exergy losses in the SMR process, and most were destroyed in the chemical reactors. Increasing the combustion air flow was proposed for finding an optimum value for exergetic efficiency in the process, thereby reducing fuel consumption. Finally,... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: power module, silicon carbide, turn-on transient
The SiC (silicon carbide) high-power module has great potential to replace the IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) power module in high-frequency and high-power applications, due to the superior properties of fast switching and low power loss, however, when the SiC high-power module operates under inappropriate conditions, the advantages of the SiC high-power module will be probably eliminated. In this paper, four kinds of SiC high-power modules are fabricated to investigate fast switching performance. The variations in characteristics of drain-source voltage at turn-on transient under the combined conditions of multiple factors are studied. A characteristic of voltage plateau is observed from the drain-source voltage waveform at turn-on transient in the experiments, and the characteristic is reproduced by simulation. The mechanism behind the voltage plateau is studied, and it is revealed that the characteristic of drain-source voltage plateau is a reflection of the miller plateau... [more]
A Novel Two-Zone Thermodynamic Model for Spark-Ignition Engines Based on an Idealized Thermodynamic Process
Yuanfeng Wang
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion, isentropic process, real-time, spark-ignition engine, two-zone model
The thermodynamic model is a valuable simulation tool for developing combustion engines. The most widely applied thermodynamic models of spark-ignition engines are the single-zone model and the two-zone model. Compared to the single-zone model, the two-zone model offers more detailed in-cylinder thermodynamic conditions, but its governing equations are numerically stiffer, therefore it is restricted when applied in computationally intensive scenarios. To reduce the two-zone model’s stiffness, this paper isolates an idealized thermodynamic process in the unburned zone and describes this idealized thermodynamic process by an algebraic equation. Assisted with this idealized thermodynamic process, this paper builds a novel two-zone model for spark-ignition engines, whose governing equations are simplified to a set of two ordinary differential equations accompanied by a set of three algebraic equations. Benchmarked against the single-zone model and conventional two-zone model, the novel two... [more]

Keywords: disruptive effect, filtered spark gap, lightning overvoltage, surge arrester, transformer protection
Protection of transformers, as one of the most expensive equipment in the power system, against lightning overvoltage impulses is a vital task. This paper, for the first time so far, investigates the effects of a filtered spark gap on the protection level of transformers against lightning overvoltage impulses. The filter is an inductor that is placed in series with the transformer and before the spark gap aiming to reduce the voltage at the connection point of the spark gap, and hence, enhancing the protection level of the transformer under lightning overvoltages. The experimental laboratory tests are accomplished on a 400 kVA, 22/0.4 kV, Delta-Star ( Δ − Y ) connection type transformer under 110 kV, and 125 kV overvoltage impulses, whereas the size of the spark gap is set to 80 mm and two inductors of 35 μ H and 119 μ H are considered. In order to perform a more in-depth analysis, a model that works reasonably close to the empirical case is developed in the EMTP-... [more]
A Novel Market Clearing and Safety Checking Method for Multi-Type Units That Considers Flexible Loads

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flexible loads, interior point method, market clearing, safety checking
Flexible loads have flexibility and variability in time and space, and they have been widely studied by scholars. However, the research on the participation of flexible loads in market clearing and safety checking is still insufficient. We propose a market clearing and safety checking method for multi-type units that considers flexible loads. First, the flexible load is divided into reducible loads, shiftable loads, and convertible loads, and its mathematical model is established. Then, the convertible loads are considered in the market clearing model, and the power management agency executes the market clearing procedure to obtain the clearing result. When the line power exceeds the limit as a result of clearing, the power flow of the branches and sections is eliminated by adjusting the unit output and reducing the flexible load at the same time, and a safety checking model considering load reduction is established. The marginal electricity price of the nodes is obtained by the interi... [more]

Keywords: activated sludge system, DAF process, dairy wastewater treatment plant, electric energy consumption, Modelling
The intensification of biological wastewater treatment requires the high usage of electric energy, mainly for aeration processes. Publications on energy consumption have been mostly related to municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The aim of the research was to elaborate on models for the estimation of energy consumption during dairy WWTP operation. These models can be used for the optimization of electric energy consumption. The research was conducted in a dairy WWTP, operating with dissolved air flotation (DAF) and an activated sludge system. Energy consumption was measured with the help of three-phase network parameter transducers and a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. The obtained models provided accurate predictions of DAF, biological treatment, and the overall WWTP energy consumption using chemical oxygen demand (COD), sewage flow, and air temperature. Using the energy consumption of the biological treatment as an independent variable, as well as... [more]

This paper presents an approach to extend the capabilities of smart grid laboratories through the concept of Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHiL) testing by re-purposing existing grid-forming converters. A simple and cost-effective power interface, paired with a remotely located Digital Real-time Simulator (DRTS), facilitates Geographically Distributed Power Hardware Loop (GD-PHiL) in a quasi-static operating regime. A case study based on the IEEE 13-bus distribution network, an on-load-tap-changer (OLTC) controller and a controllable load in the laboratory demonstrated the feasibility of such a setup. A simple compensation method applicable to this multi-rate setup is proposed and evaluated. Experimental results indicate that this compensation method significantly enhances the voltage re... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dominant mode, jet stability, swirl, twist
Based on the linear stability analysis, a mathematical model for the stability of a viscous liquid jet in a coaxial twisting compressible airflow has been developed. It takes into account the twist and compressibility of the surrounding airflow, the viscosity of the liquid jet, and the cavitation bubbles within the liquid jet. Then, the effects of aerodynamics caused by the gas−liquid velocity difference on the jet stability are analyzed. The results show that under the airflow ejecting effect, the jet instability decreases first and then increases with the increase of the airflow axial velocity. When the gas−liquid velocity ratio A = 1, the jet is the most stable. When the gas−liquid velocity ratio A > 2, this is meaningful for the jet breakup compared with A = 0 (no air axial velocity). When the surrounding airflow swirls, the airflow rotation strength E will change the jet dominant mode. E has a stabilizing effect on the liquid jet under the axisymmetric mode, while E is conducive t... [more]
Influence of Two-Phase Crossflow for Void Prediction in Bundles Using Thermal-Hydraulic System Codes

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crossflow, MARS-KS, PSBT, TRACE, void fraction
The previous study, where the void fraction predictability of three different thermal-hydraulic system codes was assessed against PSBT (PWR Subchannel and Bundle Test) benchmark data, indicated a general overprediction tendency of all system codes, especially in bundles. Because all codes have been utilized for best-estimate analyses, it is necessary to conduct further assessments in order to find the root cause of the overprediction. A further assessment has been performed using two thermal-hydraulic system codes, TRACE V5.0 patch 5 and MARS-KS 1.4, and the assessment has been carried out for both one- and multi-dimensional components. The results indicate that there is no significant difference in the predictability of the void fraction between one- and multi-dimensional components. In addition, it is found that the turbulent mixing model implemented for the multi-dimensional component of MARS-KS does not play an important role in the prediction of void distribution. Meanwhile, TRACE... [more]
