Synthesising Residential Electricity Load Profiles at the City Level Using a Weighted Proportion (Wepro) Model
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ALPG, electricity, household, load profiles, LPG, Modelling, residential, Wepro model
It is important to understand residential energy use as it is a large energy consumption sector and the potential for change is of great importance for global energy sustainability. A large energy-saving potential and emission reduction potential can be achieved, among others, by understanding energy consumption patterns in more detail. However, existing studies show that it requires many input parameters or disaggregated individual end-uses input data to generate the load profiles. Therefore, we have developed a simplified approach, called weighted proportion (Wepro) model, to synthesise the residential electricity load profile by proportionally matching the city’s main characteristics: Age group, labour force and gender structure with the representative households profiles provided in the load profile generator. The findings indicate that the synthetic load profiles can represent the local electricity consumption characteristics in the case city of Amsterdam based on time variation a... [more]

A Calibration Procedure for an Analytical Wake Model Using Wind Farm Operational Data
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: analytical wake model, power prediction, wake modeling, wind energy, wind farm optimization
Wind energy is one of the fastest growing renewable energy sources in the U.S. Wind turbine wakes change the flow field within wind farms and reduce power generation. Prior research has used experimental and computational methods to investigate and model wind farm wake effects. However, these methods are costly and time-consuming to use commercially. In contrast, a simple analytical approach can provide reasonably accurate estimates of wake effects on flow and power. To reducing errors in wake modeling, one must calibrate the model based on a specific wind farm setting. The purpose of this research is to develop a calibration procedure for wind farm wake modeling using a simple analytical approach and wind turbine operational data obtained from the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. The proposed procedure uses a Gaussian-based analytical wake model and wake superposition model. The wake growth rate varies across the wind farm based on the local streamwise turbulen... [more]

Hybrid 1D + 2D Modelling for the Assessment of the Heat Transfer in the EU DEMO Water-Cooled Lithium-Lead Manifolds
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: breeding blanket, EU DEMO, nuclear fusion, system-level modelling, thermal-hydraulics, water-cooled lithium-lead (WCLL)
The European demonstration fusion power reactor (EU DEMO) tokamak will be the first European fusion device to produce electricity and to include a breeding blanket (BB). In the framework of the design of the EU DEMO BB, the analysis of the heat transfer between the inlet and outlet manifold of the coolant is needed, to assess the actual cooling capability of the water entering the cooling channels, as well as the actual coolant outlet temperature from the machine. The complex, fully three-dimensional conjugate heat transfer problem is reduced here with a novel approach to a simpler one, decoupling the longitudinal and transverse scales for the heat transport by developing correlations for a conductive heat-transfer problem. While in the longitudinal direction a standard 1D model for the heat transport by fluid advection is adopted, a set of 2D finite elements analyses are run in the transverse direction, in order to lump the 2D heat conduction effects in suitable correlations. Such cor... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic simulation, economic analysis, household hybrid system, TRNSYS software
The adoption of micro-scale renewable energy systems in the residential sector has started to be increasingly diffused in recent years. Among the possible systems, ground heat exchangers coupled with reversible heat pumps are an interesting solution for providing space heating and cooling to households. In this context, a possible hybridization of this technology with other renewable sources may lead to significant benefits in terms of energy performance and reduction of the dependency on conventional energy sources. However, the investigation of hybrid systems is not frequently addressed in the literature. The present paper presents a technical, energy, and economic analysis of a hybrid ground-solar-wind system, proving space heating/cooling, domestic hot water, and electrical energy for a household. The system includes vertical ground heat exchangers, a water−water reversible heat pump, photovoltaic/thermal collectors, and a wind turbine. The system with the building is modeled and d... [more]

Keywords: bio-inspired wind turbines, Computational Fluid Dynamics, wind turbine, wind turbines performance
In this paper, the performance of a biomimetic wind rotor design inspired by Petrea Volubilis seed is presented. Experimentation for this rotor is configured as a horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) and numerical analysis is done in order to obtain performance curves with the open-source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software OpenFoam®. Numerical analysis and experimental results are compared for power Coefficient (Cp) and thrust coefficient (CT). The biomimetic rotor analysis is also compared with experimental results exposed by Castañeda et al. (2011), who were the first to develop those experimentations with this new rotor design. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed using an incompressible large Edyy simulation (LES) turbulence models with a localized sub-grid scale (SGS) dynamic one-equation eddy-viscosity. Enabling Methodologies for Predictive Power System Resilience Analysis in the Presence of Extreme Wind Gusts
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic Bayesian network, Markov model, power systems resilience, probabilistic modeling, resilience models, smart grid
Modern power system operation should comply with strictly reliability and security constraints, which aim at guarantee the correct system operation also in the presence of severe internal and external disturbances. Amongst the possible phenomena perturbing correct system operation, the predictive assessment of the impacts induced by extreme weather events has been considered as one of the most critical issues to address, since they can induce multiple, and large-scale system contingencies. In this context, the development of new computing paradigms for resilience analysis has been recognized as a very promising research direction. To address this issue, this paper proposes two methodologies, which are based on Time Varying Markov Chain and Dynamic Bayesian Network, for assessing the system resilience against extreme wind gusts. The main difference between the proposed methodologies and the traditional solution techniques is the improved capability in modelling the occurrence of multipl... [more]

Keywords: buildings energy efficiency, ICT, Machine Learning, smart buildings, smart cities, Sustainability
Energy efficiency is a major concern to achieve sustainability in modern society. Smart cities sustainability depends on the availability of energy-efficient infrastructures and services. Buildings compose most of the city, and they are responsible for most of the energy consumption and emissions to the atmosphere (40%). Smart cities need smart buildings to achieve sustainability goals. Building’s thermal modeling is essential to face the energy efficiency race. In this paper, we show how ICT and data science technologies and techniques can be applied to evaluate the energy efficiency of buildings. In concrete, we apply machine learning techniques to classify buildings based on their energy efficiency. Particularly, our focus is on single-family buildings in residential areas. Can Effects of Temperature on Two-Phase Gas/Oil-Relative Permeabilities in Porous Media Be Ignored? A Critical Analysis
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: effect of temperature, flow in porous media, gas/liquid systems, relative permeability, thermal recovery method
Thermal recovery processes for heavy oil exploitation involve three-phase flow at elevated temperatures. The mathematical modeling of such processes necessitates the account of changes in the rock−fluid system’s flow behavior as the temperature rises. To this end, numerous studies on effects of the temperature on relative permeabilities have been reported in the literature. Compared to studies on the temperature effects on oil/water-relative permeabilities, studies (and hence, data) on gas/oil-relative permeabilities are limited. However, the role of temperature on both gas/oil and oil/water-relative permeabilities has been a topic of much discussion, contradiction and debate. The jury is still out, without a consensus, with several contradictory hypotheses, even for the limited number of studies on gas/oil-relative permeabilities. This study presents a critical analysis of studies on gas/oil-relative permeabilities as reported in the literature, and puts forward an undeniable argument... [more]

Monitoring of MV Cable Screens, Cable Joints and Earthing Systems Using Cable Screen Current Measurements
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), cable joint, cable screen, earthing/grounding system, quasi-dynamic simulation
The paper presents the possibility of using cable screen earthing current measurements for MV, single-core cable line monitoring. Cable screen earthing current measurement allows the condition of cable screen connections, degradation of earthing systems, and the earthing system integrity to be observed, which allows a condition based maintenance (CBM) strategy to be introduced for cable screens and earthing systems in MV networks. CBM allows the workload and failure rate to be reduced. Analysis of the condition of the cable screen and earthing system is carried out based on the cable screen earthing current trends and rapid changes of the current. The proposed system is integrated with a state of the art advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and uses AMI data to calculate currents flowing through cable segments of the analyzed feeder. Additionally, a system which counts thermo-mechanical stresses associated with high current incidents in cable screens is proposed. The stresses are ass... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, cummins equation, extreme waves and responses, hybrid code, numerical limit, wave steepness
Survivability assessment is the complexity compromising Wave energy development. The present study develops a hybrid model aiming to reduce computational power while maintaining accuracy for survivability assessment of a Point-Absorber (PA) Wave Energy Converter (WEC) in extreme Wave Structure Interaction (WSI). This method couples the fast inviscid linear potential flow time-domain model WaveDyn (1.2, DNV-GL, Bristol, UK) with the fully nonlinear viscous Navier−Stokes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code OpenFOAM (4.2, OpenFOAM.org, London, UK). The coupling technique enables the simulation to change between codes, depending on an indicator relating to wave steepness identified as a function of the confidence in the linear model solution. During the CFD part of the simulation, the OpenFOAM solution is returned to WaveDyn via an additional load term, thus including viscous effects. Developments ensure a satisfactory initialisation of CFD simulation to be achieved from a ‘hot-start’... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building simulation, climate change, climate data, climate uncertainties, EURO-CORDEX, future weather files, heat stress, heatwaves, multi-year projections, overheating risk, regional climate models, thermal comfort
With increasing mean and extreme temperatures due to climate change, it becomes necessary to use—not only future typical conditions—but future heatwaves in building thermal simulations as well. Future typical weather files are widespread, but few researchers have put together methodologies to reproduce future extreme conditions. In this article, we propose a methodology to re-assemble future weather files—ready-to-use for building simulations—using data from the European Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (EURO-CORDEX) dynamically downscaled regional climate multi-year projections. It is the first time that this database is used to assemble weather files for building simulations because of its recent availability. Two types of future weather files are produced: typical weather years (TWY) and heatwave events (HWE). Combined together, they can be used to ful... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: axial flux, BLDC, electric machine, motor, pole span, poles, SPM, synchronous, yokeless
The paper presents the results of a 3D FEA simulations series of a dual air gap Axial Flux (AF) electric machine with Surface-Mounted Permanent magnets (SPM) with parameterized rotor geometry. Pole number and pole span influence on back-emf, as well as cogging and ideal electromagnetic torques angular characteristics were investigated for each model with the common segmented yokeless stator with concentric windings. Synchronous and BLDC drives supply were used to estimate back-emf distortion. Ideal torque ripple and cogging torque spectra were analyzed. It was concluded that the number of poles closer to the number of slots with ~0.8 pole span tends to yield good torque density with the lowest cogging torque, back-emf distortion and ideal torque ripple.

Electrical Generation of a Ground-Level Solar Thermoelectric Generator: Experimental Tests and One-Year Cycle Simulation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy harvesting, solar energy, thermoelectric generators
Solar thermoelectric generators (STEGs) are a promising technology to harvest energy for off-grid applications. A wide variety of STEG designs have been proposed with the aim of providing non-intermittent electrical generation. Here, we designed and tested a STEG 0.5 m long formed by nine commercial thermoelectric generator modules and located at ground level. Data were used to validate a numerical model that was employed to simulate a one-year cycle. Results confirmed the very high variability of energy generation during daylight time due to weather conditions. By contrast, energy generation during night was almost independent of atmospheric conditions. Annual variations of nighttime energy generation followed the trend of the daily averaged soil temperature at the bottom of the device. Nighttime electrical energy generation was 5.4 times smaller than the diurnal one in yearly averaged values. Mean energy generation values per day were 587 J d−1 (daylight time) and 110 J d−1 (nighttim... [more]

Experimental Verification of an Analytical Mathematical Model of a Round or Oval Tube Two-Row Car Radiator
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air-side Nusselt number, CFD modelling, empirical heat transfer equation, tube heat exchanger with plate-fins, various heat transfer equations in each tube row
The paper presents an analytical mathematical model of a car radiator, which takes into account various heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) on each row of pipes. The air-side HTCs in a specific row of pipes in the first and second passes were calculated using equations for the Nusselt number, which were determined by CFD simulation by the ANSYS program (Version 19.1, Ansys Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA). The liquid flow in the pipes can be laminar, transition, or turbulent. When changing the flow form from laminar to transition and from transition to turbulent, the HTC continuity is maintained. Mathematical models of two radiators were developed, one of which was made of round tubes and the other of oval tubes. The model allows for the calculation of the thermal output of every row of pipes in both passes of the heat exchangers. Small relative differences between the total heat flow transferred in the heat exchanger from hot water to cool air exist for different and uniform HTCs. However, th... [more]

Eulerian Two-Fluid Model of Alkaline Water Electrolysis for Hydrogen Production
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: alkaline water electrolysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, hydrogen production, two-phase process, two-phases flow
Hydrogen storage is a promising technology for storage of renewable energy resources. Despite its high energy density potential, the development of hydrogen storage has been impeded, mainly due to its significant cost. Although its cost is governed mainly by electrical energy expense, especially for hydrogen produced with alkaline water electrolysis, it is also driven by the value of the cell tension. The most common means of electrolyzer improvement is the use of an electrocatalyst, which reduces the energy required for electrochemical reaction to take place. Another efficient means of electrolyzer improvement is to use the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-assisted design that allows the comprehension of the phenomena occurring in the electrolyzer and also the improvement in the electrolyzer’s efficiency. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic conditions, energy retrofit, HeLLo, historic wall, hygrothermal measurement, hygrothermal simulation, in situ, non-destructive test
The hygrothermal behaviour of an internally insulated historic wall is still hard to predict, mainly because the physical characteristics of the materials composing the historic wall are unknown. In this study, the hygrothermal assessment of an internally thermal insulated masonry wall of an historic palace located in Ferrara, in Italy, is shown. In situ non-destructive monitoring method is combined with a hygrothermal simulation tool, aiming to better analyse and discuss future refurbishment scenarios. The economic losses from earthquakes tend to hit the national economy considerably; therefore, models that are capable of estimating the vulnerability and losses of future earthquakes are highly consequential for emergency planners with the purpose of risk mitigation. This demands a mass prioritization filtering of structures to identify vulnerable buildings for retrofitting purposes. The application of advanced structural analysis on each building to study the earthquake response is impractical due to complex calculations, long computational time, and exorbitant cost. This exhibits the need for a fast, reliable, and rapid method, commonly known as Rapid Visual Screening (RVS). Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, displacement chamber pressure, positive displacement pump, rotary vane pump
Low noise emissions of vehicle components are today a quality feature in the automotive sector. In automatic transmissions in particular, the hydraulic pump often contributes significantly to noise, which motivates research to clarify the noise sources and transmission pathways in these components. The subject of the present investigation is the generation of noise by the inherently instationary flow in hydraulic pumps. In order to shed some light on these phenomena, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation model for flow investigations on rotary vane pumps was set up. In this work, first the influence of different simulation parameters on the numerical results is analyzed. Then the pressure in the internal displacement chambers of the pump is examined, as it can be assumed that this is the essential parameter for noise generation. Different operating conditions such as rotational speeds and delivery pressures are investigated. Furthermore, the simulation results are compared to... [more]
