Generalized Average Modeling of a Dual Active Bridge DC-DC Converter with Triple-Phase-Shift Modulation
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Dual Active Bridge (DAB), Generalized Average Modeling (GAM), linear time periodic system, LTP, power characteristics, Triple Phase Shift Modulation (TPS)
This paper shows an elaboration of an equivalent electrical circuit of a Dual Active Bridge (DAB) and its application as a versatile tool for steady-states analysis in wide range of operating conditions. This work analyses the converter which is controlled with a coherently defined Triple Phase-Shift (TPS) modulation which allows appropriate switching functions to be written, thus enabling the circuit’s state-space equations to be derived. Due to this approach, a Fourier series expansion may be easily applied to utilize Generalized Averaged Modeling (GAM)—a convenient method for modeling resonant and quasi-resonant power converters. Moreover, this paper shows the utilization of the GAM model higher harmonics’ complex magnitudes to calculate the steady-state power characteristics for bidirectional operation; additionally, a method for a particular state variable waveform signal reconstruction is presented. All the discussed model properites are validated with a 1.5 kW 100 kHz SiC-based... [more]

Scalable Residential Building Geometry Characterisation Using Vehicle-Mounted Camera System
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building dimension measurement, building reconstruction, building stock, urban building energy modelling
Residential buildings are an important sector in the urban environment as they provide essential dwelling space, but they are also responsible for a significant share of final energy consumption. In addition, residential buildings that were built with outdated standards usually face difficulty meeting current energy performance standards. The situation is especially common in Europe, as 35% of buildings were built over fifty years ago. Building retrofitting techniques provide a choice to improve building energy efficiency while maintaining the usable main structures, as opposed to demolition. The retrofit assessment requires the building stock information, including energy demand and material compositions. Therefore, understanding the building stock at scale becomes a critical demand. A significant piece of information is the building geometry, which is essential in building energy modelling and stock analysis. In this investigation, an approach has been developed to automatically meas... [more]

Cooling Modelling of an Electrically Heated Ceramic Heat Accumulator
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ceramic filling, electrical resistance heating of the storage pack, experimental study, heat accumulation, numerical model of storage-pack cooling
This paper presents a simple novel mathematical model of a heat accumulator with an arranged packing in the form of ceramic cylinders. The accumulator analysed in the paper can be heated with inexpensive electricity overnight or excess electricity from wind farms. It can be used as a heat source in a hydronic heating system or for domestic hot water. The differential equations describing the transient temperature of the accumulator packing and flowing air were solved using the explicit Euler and Crank−Nicolson methods. The accuracy of both methods was assessed using exact analytical solutions and the superposition method for a uniform initial temperature and accounted for time changes in inlet air temperature. A numerical simulation of the accumulator cooled by flowing air was carried out. The correlation for the air-side Nusselt number was determined using the method of least squares based on experimental data. The calculated exit air temperature was compared with the measured data. Assessment Criteria of Changes in Health Index Values over Time—A Transformer Population Study
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: condition assessment, health index, population management, power transformer
The current use of health index algorithms is mainly limited to single assessments of the unit’s condition or the device comparison. The paper focuses on the changes in the health index values between the consecutive analyses. The algorithm used for this purpose was previously developed by the authors. The test group included 359 complete oil evaluation results from 86 power transformers monitored over several years. For each outcome, the influence of the sub-components of the main score was calculated. Additional health index increase simulations were performed based on the IEC 60599 standard guidelines. The highest increases and decreases in the total score were listed and analyzed to determine the main factors behind the changes. The study has shown that the changes in dissolved gases concentrations have a much more significant influence on the health index values than the changes in physicochemical properties of the oil and furfural content. Based on the magnitude of the observed c... [more]

Thermal Degradation and Organic Chlorine Removal from Mixed Plastic Wastes
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: FTIR spectroscopy, heat content, kinetic modeling, mixed plastic wastes, organic chlorine removal, thermal degradation
Plastic waste accumulation has been growing due to the increase in plastic generation and the lack of infrastructure for recycling. One of the approaches is to treat the mixed plastic waste (MPW) through thermal processes to produce feedstocks for other applications. However, the presence of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in MPW would produce HCl during processing and has negative impacts (emission, catalyst poisoning, etc.). In addition, due to the high heterogeneity of MPW, it is difficult to generate consistent experimental data. In this study, MPW was homogenized through double compounding−extrusion and then formed into a sheet to be treated at 400 °C. The solid products at various mass losses were characterized by heat and chlorine content, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and elemental composition analysis. It was found that the thermal degradation of MPW started at ~260 °C. The chlorine removal efficiency increased with mass loss and reached an asymptotic value of ~84%... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 1D–3D coupling, forced vibration, high-frequency pressure oscillation, hydraulic system, OpenFOAM
High-Frequency Pressure Fluctuation (HFPF) is an extensively observed hydraulic phenomenon in pumped-storage power stations and water conveyance projects. The investigation of the propagation characteristics of the pressure perturbation is of great significance for the safe operation of hydraulic facilities. In this study, a one-dimensional (1D)−three-dimensional (3D) coupling model is established based on the combination of the Method of Characteristics (MOC) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and implanted in the open source software OpenFOAM. The established model in this study implants the dynamic mesh module into the original OpenFOAM solver sonicLiquidFoam and presents the complete solution procedure of the CFD model with the dynamic mesh considered. The vibration of the pipe walls modeled by the mesh motion is employed to numerically generate the HFPF in the hydraulic system, which could not be implemented in the traditional MOC model. The independence of the pressure pertur... [more]

Applications of Machine Learning to Consequence Analysis of Hypothetical Accidents at Barakah Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: classification, Machine Learning, nuclear accident, nuclear power plant, regression
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) built four nuclear power plants at the Barakah site to supply 25% of the region’s electricity. Among the Barakah Nuclear Power Plants, (BNPPs), their main objectives are to achieve the highest possible safety for the environment, operators, and community members; quality nuclear reactors and energy; and power production efficiency. To meet these objectives, decision-makers must access large amounts of data in the case of a nuclear accident to prevent the release of radioactive materials. Machine learning offers a feasible solution to propose early warnings and help contain accidents. Thus, our study aimed at developing and testing a machine learning model to classify nuclear accidents using the associated release of radioactive materials. We used Radiological Assessment System for Consequence Analysis (RASCAL) software to estimate the concentration of released radioactive materials in the four seasons of the year 2020. We applied these concentrations as p... [more]

A Novel Overlap-Time Effect Suppression for Current Source Converter
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: current source converter, overlap time, space vector modulation
In order to ensure the continuity of the DC-side inductor current, current source converter (CSC) needs to add overlap time between the drive signals, but the overlap time will introduce low order (mainly fifth and seventh) harmonics to the grid current, which seriously degrade the harmonic performance of grid current. At present, some research has been conducted to theoretically analyze and mitigate the overlap-time effect in CSC, including the use of positive-slope sawtooth wave or negative-slope sawtooth wave as the carrier wave, turning on the switch early or delaying turning it off, and eliminating the deviation effect by compensation algorithms, etc. However, existing overlap-time suppression schemes takes the nearest three vector synthesis reference vector scheme as the object of study, in other words, the effect of overlap time on the non-nearest three-vector synthesis reference vector scheme has not been considered. To address these issues, this paper takes the non-nearest thr... [more]

Effects of Confining Pressure and Hydrostatic Pressure on the Fracturing of Rock under Cyclic Electrohydraulic Shock Waves
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: confining pressure, discharge energy, electrohydraulic discharge, hydrostatic pressure, loading mode, shock wave
For an array of applications of the high voltage pulse discharge technology in reservoir stimulations and to gain a deeper understanding of the fractures mechanism of deep well rock under cyclic electrohydraulic shock waves (EHSWs), the effect of confining pressure and hydrostatic pressure on the fracturing of rock under EHSWs are investigated in this paper. Firstly, a two-dimensional (2D) water-explosive numerical model is built to match the computed peak pressure of the EHSW with that obtained by the empirical formula by tuning the relevant parameters, based on the equivalent method of EHSWs. Then, a rock model is established to obtain the stress distribution under static loads. Subsequently, the water-explosive model is coupled with the rock model to obtain the stress distribution under static and dynamic loads. In addition, based on this coupling model, the influences of confining pressure and hydrostatic pressure on circumferential stress, radial stress in the rock and the fractur... [more]

The Effect of Mining Remnants on Elastic Strain Energy Arising in the Tremor-Inducing Layer
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: analytical modelling, mining tremors, rock burst hazard, rock mechanics, underground coal mining
A vast majority of hard coal deposits in Poland have a multi-seam structure, hence the presence of mining remnants left from previous operations. The impact of those remnants (exploitation edges or residual pillars) can further intensify geomechanical phenomena occurring in the rock mass, leading to changes in the original state of stress. This applies to all layers within the rock strata, including thick and coherent ones (referred to as tremor-inducing layers) where the impacts of mining remnants are likely to trigger tremors, thus enhancing the rock bursts hazard. In the light of the geomechanical model of rock strata recalled in the study, it is assumed that homogeneous and isotropic elastic layers are found between the considered mining remnant (which is revealed as the stress distribution), and the rock medium modelled as a homogeneous and isotropic half-plane. Development of the state of stress in the bedded medium was brought down to the analysis of interacting elastic layers,... [more]

Three-Dimensional CFD Modeling on the Thermal Characteristics of Buried Oil Pipeline Involving the Heat Transfer of Wax Layer
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: buried oil pipeline, CFD simulation, effective thermal conductivity, temperature field, wax layer
It is common to have a wax layer on the inner wall of waxy crude oil pipeline. However, the study of the wax layer on the heat transfer of buried pipeline systems is inadequate due to its instability of composition and properties; it may lead to the inaccurate prediction of the pipeline temperature field. Based on the finite element simulation technology, a three-dimensional heat transfer model of buried crude oil pipeline involving wax layer was proposed and solved. The thermal effect of the wax layer on pipeline system was analyzed quantitatively. Numerical results show that the average deviation of soil temperature near the pipeline reach 1.42 K when there is a 4 mm wax layer. Among different thermal conductivity models of heterogeneous materials, the EMT model plays best in predicting the conductivity of a waxy layer. By setting different working conditions, the influence mechanisms of several thermal influencing factors are discussed. The results show that the thermal influence ra... [more]

Prediction of Occupant Behavior toward Natural Ventilation in Japanese Dwellings: Machine Learning Models and Feature Selection
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Japanese dwellings, Machine Learning, natural ventilation, occupant behavior, prediction
Occupant behavior based on natural ventilation has a significant impact on building energy consumption. It is important for the quantification of occupant-behavior models to select observed variables, i.e., features that affect the state of window opening and closing, and to consider machine learning models that are effective in predicting this state. In this study, thermal comfort was investigated, and machine learning data were analyzed for 30 houses in Gifu, Japan. Among the selected machine learning models, the logistic regression and deep neural network models produced consistently excellent results. The accuracy of the prediction of open and closed windows differed among the models, and the factors influencing the window-opening behaviors of the occupants differed from those influencing their window-closing behavior. In the selection of features, the analysis using thermal indices representative of the room and cooling features showed excellent results, indicating that cooling fe... [more]

Electricity Spot Price Modeling and Forecasting in European Markets
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ARIMA, asymmetry, conditional volatility models, GARCH, outliers, time series analysis
In many competitive electricity markets around the world, the dynamic behavior of hourly electricity prices is subject to significant uncertainty and volatility due to electricity demand, availability of generation sources, fuel costs, and power plant availability. This work is devoted to describing and comparing the dynamics of electricity prices for some markets in Europe, selecting the five countries representing the largest economies in Western Europe (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom). Additionally, Denmark is included in the study to assess whether the size of the country is a determinant of price behavior. The six datasets of hourly price series, which exhibits a strong daily seasonality, are modelled using the most relevant well-known statistical models for time series analysis: ARIMA models and different versions of GARCH models. Efficient Simulation of Sandbody Architecture Using Probability Simulation—A Case Study in Cretaceous Condensate Gas Reservoir in Yakela Area, Tahe Oilfield, China
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Cretaceous, Monte Carlo simulation, reservoir description, sandbody architecture, Tahe Oilfield
The Cretaceous condensate gas reservoir in Yakela is in a fan delta system in which the river channel swings frequently and the contact relationships between sandbodies are complicated both vertically and horizontally. Therefore, making the sandbody architecture clear is becoming the most urgent demand in locating the remaining oil. However, conventional well correlations and fine interpretation do not apply in this area due to the large-spacing of wells and the lack of reliable seismic data. In this paper, we analyzed the vertical characteristics of sandbody architecture including the type and thickness of architectural elements and their contact relationships based on well data, then simulated the lateral and planar distribution probabilities via a database containing a large number of dimension parameters from relevant architectural elements using Monte Carlo simulation. This simulation provides reasonable and efficient estimation of inter-well sandbody distribution. The workflow an... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, photovoltaic modules inspection, renewable sources, solar energy
The emergence of large photovoltaic farms poses a new challenge for quick and economic diagnostics of such installations. This article presents this issue starting from a quantitative analysis of the impact of panel defects, faulty installation, and lack of farm maintenance on electricity production. We propose a low-cost and efficient method for photovoltaic (PV) plant quality surveillance that combines technologies such as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), thermal imaging, and machine learning so that systematic inspection of a PV farm can be performed frequently. Most emphasis is placed on using deep neural networks to analyze thermographic images. We show how the use of the YOLO network makes it possible to develop a tool that performs the analysis of the image material already during the flyby.

Extremal Dependence Modelling of Global Horizontal Irradiance with Temperature and Humidity: An Application Using South African Data
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: archimedean copulas, bivariate threshold excess model, conditional multivariate extreme value, extreme value mixture model, global horizontal irradiance, laplace margins
The interaction between global horizontal irradiance (GHI) and temperature helps determine the maximum amount of solar power generated. As temperature increases, GHI increases up to the point that it increases at a decreasing rate and then decreases. Therefore, system operators need to know the maximum possible solar power which can be generated. Using the multivariate adaptive regression splines, extreme value theory and copula models, the present paper seeks to determine the maximum temperature that will result in the generation of the maximum GHI ceteris paribus. The paper also discusses extremal dependence modelling of GHI with temperature and relative humidity (RH) at one radiometric station using South African data from 16 November 2015 to 16 November 2021. Empirical results show that the marginal increases of GHI converge to 0.12 W/m2 when temperature converges to 44.26 °C and the marginal increases of GHI converge to −0.1 W/m2 when RH converges to 103.26%. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: FEM, location method, long and steep grade, mid-point anchor, railway catenary, tension difference
In order to ensure the safe and reliable operation of a high-speed railway, the precise positioning of the mid-point anchor in the catenary is very important. In view of the two problems in the calculation of the mid-point anchor position of the catenary in a long ramp section, the calculation accuracy is low, and the calculation of the central anchor clamp position is lacking. In this study, the predetermined location of the mid-point anchor is chosen based on the mid-point anchor location principle and the line condition, and the range of the allowable error of the mid-point anchor setting is determined according to the predetermined position of the mid-point anchor. Secondly, by considering the impact of the line ramp and using the measured span length, the tension difference of the clue in the direction of the line is calculated. Then, the theoretical location of the mid-point anchor clamp is determined using the downhill component and the tension difference. Finally, the theoretic... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFM, Computational Fluid Dynamics, FAM, flamelet, premixed turbulent combustion, RANS, ultra-lean combustion
The main challenge of improving spark ignition (SI) engines to achieve ever increasing thermal efficiencies and near-zero pollutant emissions today concerns developing turbulent combustion under homogeneous ultra-lean premixed mixtures (HULP). This continuous shift of the lean operation limit entails questions on the applicability limits of the combustion models used to date for SI engine design and optimization. In this work, an assessment of flamelet-based models, widely used in RANS SI engines simulations of premixed turbulent combustion, is carried out using an open-source 3D-CFD platform to clarify the applicability limits on HULP mixtures. Two different consolidated approaches are selected: the Coherent Flame Model (CFM) and the Flame Area Model (FAM). Both methodologies are embedded by the authors into the same numerical structure and compared against measurements over a simplified and controlled flame configuration, which is representative of engine-like conditions. Modeling and Analysis of Voltage Harmonic for Three-Level Neutral-Point-Clamped H-Bridge Inverter Considering Dead-Time
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 3L-NPC H-bridge, analytical modelling, dead-time, voltage harmonic
The advantages of three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) H-bridge inverters, such as simple topological structure, low device voltage stress, high equivalent switching frequency, and highly expansible capacity, have made them the preferred choice for inverters matching with medium voltage high-capacity multi-phase open-end winding vessel propulsion motors. To quantitatively evaluate the propulsion motors’ harmonics, electromagnetic vibration, and noise caused by pulse-width modulation (PWM) and device dead-time, it is necessary to research the mathematical modeling of pulse-width modulated output voltage harmonics in consideration of dead-time. In this paper, the principle of the phase-disposition PWM method of the 3L-NPC H-bridge inverters was firstly introduced. Then, the analytical models of output voltage harmonics with and without considering the effect of dead-time were established based on the double Fourier series approach and the harmonic distribution of the dead-time effect... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: current limitation, de-loading, grid-forming, photovoltaic, virtual synchronous machine
The increase in inverter-based resources associated with the increased installation of PV sources is a concern because it reduces the inertia of the power system during peak PV generation periods. As a countermeasure to reduce grid inertia, the addition of pseudo-inertia using virtual synchronous machines can be selected, and PV generation can cooperatively contribute to the stable operation of the power system by using the suppressed output as reserve power. However, few studies have analyzed VSMs that do not use batteries and use PV as a resource (PV-VSM) in simulations, including grid interconnection and solar radiation fluctuations, and it is necessary to clarify the issues and discuss countermeasures. In this study, electromagnetic transient response analysis was applied to a VSM connected to a two-generator system, simulations were performed, and the following findings were reported and countermeasure methods for the problem were proposed.
