A CFD Investigation of a 2D Balanced Vane Pump Focusing on Leakage Flows and Multiphase Flow Characteristics
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 2D, Computational Fluid Dynamics, multiphase flow, rotary vane pump
Vane pumps are often applied in automatic transmission systems of vehicles. Future applications require the oil pumps to be more efficient and to be able to handle multiphase flow pumping situations to a certain extend. To fulfill these requirements, efficient development tools are needed. Therefore, a less demanding computational 2D model of a fixed-type balanced vane pump was derived and numerically analyzed with the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS CFX. The meshing of the rotating parts was done with TwinMesh, using a moving mesh approach. At first, a mesh convergence study was performed. It was shown that the resolution of the radial clearances in particular had a significant influence on the predicted leakages and the volumetric efficiency. The leakage was further investigated concerning the dependence on rotational speed and delivery pressure. In the next step, multiphase flows were considered. In a first setup, vapor cavitation was analyzed and the in... [more]

Retrofit Methodology Based on Energy Simulation Modeling Applied for the Enhancement of a Historical Building in L’Aquila
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: architectural heritage, dynamic simulations, energy optimization, Modelling, retrofit methodology
Energy loss has not been addressed effectively by policies introduced to encourage the preservation and enhancement of historical structures. Material and other constraints, together with safety standard improvements, do not always guarantee adequate levels of environmental performance. An optimization of retrofit measures to align with new uses, new standards of comfort, and energy saving are needed, as are studies based on new best practices for the enhancement of architectural heritage. This paper presents a method that uses dynamic models tared on non-destructive surveys, and based on compatible energy and structural interventions derived from preliminary analyses integrated into special design tools. Energy simulations were carried out using Design Builder (6.1.5.002, Designbuilder Software Ltd, Stroud, UK) software. The case study is a former hospital, S. Salvatore, in L’Aquila, an architecturally important building, severely damaged by an earthquake in 2009. The methodology pres... [more]

Simulations and Tests of a KRET Aerospace Penetrator
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: aerospace penetrator, analysis, FEM, KRET, mole penetrator, reluctance actuator, Simulation
This manuscript presents the simulation tests of an aerospace penetrator conducted to check the device’s validity and functionality. For this work, the numerical model was created on the basis of engineering data, the laboratory model of the tube reluctance actuator was created on the basis of the numerical model, and a set of simulations were executed on the basis of both presented. Moreover, the mathematical model was supplemented by precise boundary conditions. The main goal was the analysis of the introduced device’s properties by comparing them to experimental values. Three different variants were taken into account to check the construction functionality and to study the most important parameters, e.g., the hammer displacement, hammer velocity, eddy currents and overall electromagnetic properties of the penetrator’s hammer displacement. The high-end values of the applied components were derived on the basis of the results and are presented in the summary of the concluded work. An... [more]

Predictions of Rock Temperature Evolution at the Lahendong Geothermal Field by Coupled Numerical Model with Discrete Fracture Model Scheme
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: geothermal reservoir, numerical simulation, reservoir temperature, THM coupling
The comprehensive exploitation of geothermal fields has an impact on the productivity of the reservoirs. To realize sustainable steam production, changes in the rock temperature need to be predicted and controlled. A coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) model employing COMSOL Multiphysics was proposed to study the characteristics of heat transfer, fluid flow, and solid deformation at the Lahendong geothermal field, in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The numerical results were compared with analytical and measured data in order to validate the numerical simulation. Based on the results, the predicted temperatures of the production wells showed significant decrease with the production time. In addition, a reduction in the reservoir temperature leads to lower specific gross electrical power within the production well, which should significantly reduce the sustainability of the power plant.

Phase Change Material Melting Process in a Thermal Energy Storage System for Applications in Buildings
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Ansys FLUENT®, Computational Fluid Dynamics, energy demand, PCM, thermal energy storage
The development of thermal energy storage systems is a possible solution in the search for reductions in the difference between the global energy supply and demand. In this context, the ability of some materials, the so-called phase change materials (PCMs), to absorb and release large amounts of energy under specific periods and operating conditions has been verified. The applications of these materials are limited due to their low thermal conductivity, and thus, it is necessary to associate them with high-conductivity materials, such as metals, to make the control of energy absorption and release times possible. Bearing this in mind, this paper presents a numerical analysis of the melting process of a PCM into a triplex tube heat exchanger (TTHX) with finned copper tubes, which allowed for the heat transfer between a heating fluid (water) and the phase change material to power a liquid-desiccant air conditioning system. Through the analysis of the temperature fields, liquid fractions,... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: automation of distribution systems, digital protections, fault location isolation and system restoration, IEC 61850, modelling of power systems
A new simulation library is developed on OMNeT++ to model faults in distribution systems. The proposed library makes it possible to calculate the status of lines and busbars from the point of view of a protection system, enabling the modeling of overcurrents, power outages and fault passage indicators. The library is applied to model a decentralized protection system based on the exchange of IEC 61850 Generic Object Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE) messages between intelligent electronic devices responsible for the operation of circuit breakers and disconnectors. The time needed to secure and transmit GOOSE messages over the Internet is characterized and included in the model. Several studies are carried out to analyze the effect of different parameters, such as GOOSE retransmission times and failure rates of switching devices and communication channels, on the performance of the protection system.

An Efficient Boosted C5.0 Decision-Tree-Based Classification Approach for Detecting Non-Technical Losses in Power Utilities
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, boosted C5.0 decision tree, electricity theft detection, machine learning algorithms, power utilities
Electricity fraud in billing are the primary concerns for Distribution System Operators (DSO). It is estimated that billions of dollars are wasted annually due to these illegal activities. DSOs around the world, especially in underdeveloped countries, still utilize conventional time consuming and inefficient methods for Non-Technical Loss (NTL) detection. This research work attempts to solve the mentioned problem by developing an efficient energy theft detection model in order to identify the fraudster customers in a power distribution system. The key motivation for the present study is to assist the DSOs in their fight against energy theft. The proposed computational model initially utilizes a set of distinct features extracted from the monthly consumers’ consumption data, obtained from Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) Pakistan, to segregate the honest and the fraudulent customers. The Pearson’s chi-square feature selection algorithm is adopted to select the most relevant feature... [more]

Wideband DOA Estimation on Co-prime Array via Atomic Norm Minimization
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: atomic norm minimization (ANM), co-prime array, direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, wideband sources
This paper introduces a low complexity wideband direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithm on the co-prime array. To increase the number of the detectable signal sources and to prevent an unnecessary increase in complexity, the low dimensional co-prime array vector is constructed by arranging elements of the correlation matrix at every frequency bin. The atomic norm minimization (ANM)-based approach resolves the grid-mismatch, which causes an inevitable error in the compressive sensing (CS)-based DOA estimation. However, the complexity surges when the ANM is exploited to the wideband DOA estimation on the co-prime array. The surging complexity of the ANM-based wideband DOA estimation on the co-prime array is handled by solving the time-saving semidefinite programming (SDP) motivated by the ANM for multiple measurement vector (MMV) case. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has high accuracy and low complexity compared to compressive sensing (CS)-based wideband DOA e... [more]

International Energy Security Risk Index—Analysis of the Methodological Settings
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: analysis, International Energy Security Risk Index, principal component analysis, Promax oblique rotation, stepwise regression
The main objective of this paper is to analyze model settings of the International Energy Security Risk Index developed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The study was performed using stepwise regression, principal component analysis, and Promax oblique rotation. The conclusion of the regression analysis shows that Crude Oil Price and Global Coal Reserves are sufficient to explain 90% of the variance of the Index. However, if a model that explains 100% of the variance of the Index is chosen and other variables are added, Global Coal Reserves loses importance due to the presence of other parameters in which it is contained. Regardless of the chosen model of analysis, it is evident that there is room for revising the Index and removing variables that do not contribute to its precision. The research showed that the main disadvantage of the variables that make up the Index rests with the fact that the variables are of different degrees of generality, that is, one parameter is contained in o... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: duty cycle, global horizontal irradiance, linear approximation, mathematical modeling, MPPT algorithm
The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm has become an integral part of many charge controllers that are used in photovoltaic (PV) systems. Most of the existing algorithms have a compromise among simplicity, tracking speed, ability to track accurately, and cost. In this work, a novel “straight-line approximation based Maximum Power Point (MPP) finding algorithm” is proposed where the intersections of two linear lines have been utilized to find the MPP, and investigated for its effectiveness in tracking maximum power points in case of rapidly changing weather conditions along with tracking speed using standard irradiance and temperature curves for validation. In comparison with a conventional Perturb and Observe (P&O) method, the Proposed method takes fewer iterations and also, it can precisely track the MPP s even in a rapidly varying weather condition with minimal deviation. The Proposed algorithm is also compared with P&O algorithm in terms of accuracy in duty cycle and effi... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: GP, LPs, mismatching loss, partial shading, power maximization, PV array
The analysis and the assessment of interconnected photovoltaic (PV) modules under different shading conditions and various shading patterns are presented in this paper. The partial shading conditions (PSCs) due to the various factors reduce the power output of PV arrays, and its characteristics have multiple peaks due to the mismatching losses between PV panels. The principal objective of this paper is to model, analyze, simulate and evaluate the performance of PV array topologies such as series-parallel (SP), honey-comb (HC), total-cross-tied (TCT), ladder (LD) and bridge-linked (BL) under different shading patterns to produce the maximum power by reducing the mismatching losses (MLs). Along with the conventional PV array topologies, this paper also discusses the hybrid PV array topologies such as bridge-linked honey-comb (BLHC), bridge-linked total-cross-tied (BLTCT) and series-parallel total-cross-tied (SPTCT). March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building archetypes, building energy simulation, EnergyPlus, regression, urban scale
Building energy consumption accounts for 36% of the overall energy end use worldwide and is growing rapidly as developing countries continue to urbanize. Understanding the energy use at urban scale will lay the foundation for identification of energy efficiency opportunities to be deployed at speed. China has almost half of global new constructions and plays an important role in building suitability. However, an open source national building energy consumption database is not available in China. To provide data support for building energy consumptions, this paper used a simulation method to develop an urban building energy consumption database for a pilot city in Wuhan, China. First, residential, small, and large office building archetype energy models were created in EnergyPlus to represent typical building energy consumption in Wuhan. The baseline reference model simulation results were further validated using survey data from the literature. Second, stochastic simulations were condu... [more]

Distributed Hierarchical Consensus-Based Economic Dispatch for Isolated AC/DC Hybrid Microgrid
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: distributed hierarchical strategy, dynamic economic dispatch, isolated AC/DC hybrid microgrid, two-layer consensus method
In this paper, a distributed hierarchical consensus algorithm is proposed to solve the economic dispatch (ED) problem for the isolated AC/DC hybrid microgrid. At first, the whole nodes of the AC/DC hybrid microgrid are divided into two parts, that is, the leadership layer nodes and the tracking layer nodes. The leadership layer nodes update the data through their own feedback elements, while the tracking layer nodes receive the information from the leadership layer nodes and update the data. After several iterations, the two different layer nodes obtain the same state, which realizes the dynamic active power balance of the whole AC/DC microgrid. Besides, the AC sub-grid and DC sub-grid can also realize the power balance by the proposed algorithm, and the energy storage units will absorb or release active power to meet the power demand in the respective section. In addition, the constraints of the nodes are also taken into account to guarantee that the power nodes in the AC/DC hybrid mi... [more]

Application and Validation of a Dynamic Energy Simulation Tool: A Case Study with Water Flow Glazing Envelope
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building energy simulation, experimental validation, water flow glazing
The transparent materials used in building envelopes significantly contribute to heating and cooling loads of a building. The use of transparent materials requires to solve issues regarding heat gain, heat loss, and daylight. Water flow glazing (WFG), a disruptive technology, includes glazing as part of the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system. Water is transparent to visible wavelengths, but it captures most of the infrared solar radiation. As an alternative to fossil fuel-based HVAC systems, the absorbed energy can be transferred to the ground through borehole heat exchangers and dissipated as a means of free-cooling. Researchers of the Polytechnic University of Madrid have developed a software tool to calculate the energy balance while incorporating the dynamic properties of WFG. This article has studied the mathematical model of that tool and validated its ability to predict energy savings in buildings, taking spectral and thermal parameters of glazing catalogs,... [more]

A New Wind Turbine CFD Modeling Method Based on a Porous Disk Approach for Practical Wind Farm Design
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD porous disk (PD) wake model, large-eddy simulation (LES), mutual interference of wind turbine wakes
In this study, the new computational fluid dynamics (CFD) porous disk (PD) wake model was proposed in order to accurately predict the time-averaged wind speed deficits in the wind turbine wake region formed on the downstream side by the 2-MW wind turbine operating at a wind speed of 10 m/s. We use the concept of forest canopy model as a new CFD PD wake model, which has many research results in the meteorological field. In the forest canopy model, an aerodynamic resistance is added as an external force term to all governing equations (Navier−Stokes equations) in the streamwise, spanwise, and vertical directions. Therefore, like the forest model, the aerodynamic resistance is added to the governing equations in the three directions as an external force term in the CFD PD wake model. In addition, we have positioned the newly proposed the LES using the CFD PD wake model approach as an intermediate method between the engineering wake model (empirical/analytical wake model) and the LES combi... The purpose of this paper is to estimate the H-Darrieus wind turbine aerodynamic performance, aerodynamic blade loads, and velocity profiles downstream behind the rotor. The wind turbine model is based on the rotor designed by McDonnell Aircraft Company. Comparison of Cooling Methods for a Thermoelectric Generator with Forced Convection
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), forced convection, net power, system-level optimization, thermoelectric generator
A thermoelectric generator (TEG) is a clean electricity generator from a heat source, usually waste heat. However, it is not as widely utilized as other electricity generators due to low conversion efficiency from heat to electricity. One approach is a system-level net power optimization for a TEG system composed of TEGs, heat sink, and fans. In this paper, we propose airflow reuse after cooling preceding TEGs to maximize system net power. For the accurate system net power, we model the TEG system, air, and heat source with proper dimension and material characteristics, and simulate with a computational fluid dynamics program. Next, the TEG power generation and the fan power consumption are calculated in consideration of the Seebeck coefficient and internal electrical resistance varying with hot and cold side temperatures. Finally, we find the optimal number of TEGs and fan speed generating the most efficient system net power in various TEG systems. The results show that the system wit... [more]

Partial Pilot Allocation Scheme in Multi-Cell Massive MIMO Systems for Pilot Contamination Reduction
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: channel quality, large-scale fading coefficients, massive MIMO, pilot allocation, pilot contamination, pilot sequences
Inter-cell interference has been identified as one of the major challenges of multiple-input−multiple-output (MIMO)-enabled cellular systems. This problem occurs when the same pilot sets are reused across adjacent cells to save bandwidth for data transmission. As a result, so-called pilot contamination occurs, which cannot be mitigated with an increased number of serving antennas. In this work, we proposed a partial pilot allocation scheme (PPA) to tackle the pilot contamination problem and consequently improve the uplink throughput of users in multi-cell massive MIMO systems. This was achieved by using the large-scale characteristics of the fading channel to keep users with a weak channel condition out of the effect of severe interference during the pilot allocation process. Simulation results showed that the proposed scheme outperformed both smart pilot allocation (SPA) and conventional schemes. In particular, PPA improved the uplink rate by 30% compared to the SPA—a recently propose... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building simulation, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) validation, natural ventilation (NV), passive air conduction system (PACS), wind towers

In this paper, an existing building is presented that was designed with a passive air conduction system (PACS), where wind and buoyancy effects induce air to be exchanged without external energy needs. The aim is to show that the design methodology, using numerical simulation to give accurate results, is able to use them in further developments. Due to this design process, the specific building possesses numerous special properties, including airflow accelerating elements, solar-heated “chimneys”, and the indoor heat sources coming from the industrial technology. Importance of Air Humidity and Contaminations in the Internal and External Transonic Flows
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, condensation, relative humidity, transonic flow
The paper presents mathematical modelling of steam condensation in the atmospheric air transonic flows. A single-fluid model was employed. The model was validated against the in-house experimental studies of internal flow in nozzles and against benchmark tests available in literature i.e., RAE2822 transonic airfoil. The impact of air relative humidity on the condensation process under transonic flow conditions was examined. The paper shows that the impact of the condensation process in air transonic flow is non-negligible and has to be taken under consideration in flow simulations. The presence of air contaminants in form of small particles was considered too. Their crucial role in the change of the transonic flow structure was numerically confirmed.

Pressure Loss Reduction in an Innovative Directional Poppet Control Valve
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD analysis, directional control valve, flow resistance, poppet valve, pressure loss reduction
This article presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of an innovative directional control valve consisting of four poppet seat valves and two electromagnets enclosed inside a single body. The valve has a unique design, allowing the use of any poppet valve configuration. Both normally opened (NO) and normally closed (NC) seat valves can be applied. The combination of four universal valve seats and two electromagnets gives a wide range of flow path configurations. This significantly increases the possibility of practical applications. However, due to the significant miniaturization of the valve body and the requirement to obtain necessary connections between flow paths, multiple geometrically complex channels had to be made inside the body. Hence, the main purpose of work was to shape the geometry of the flow channels in such a way as to minimize pressure losses. Compact Thermal Modeling of Modules Containing Multiple Power LEDs
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: compact thermal models, device thermal coupling, multi-LED lighting modules
Temperature is an essential factor affecting the operation of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which are often used in circuits containing multiple devices influencing each other. Therefore, the thermal models of such circuits should take into account not only the self-heating effects, but also the mutual thermal influences among devices. This problem is illustrated here based on the example of a module containing six LEDs forming on the substrate a hexagon. This module is supposed to operate without any heat sink in the natural convection cooling conditions, hence it has been proposed to increase the thermal pad area in order to lower the device-operating temperature. In the experimental part of the paper, the recorded diode-heating curves are processed using the network identification by deconvolution method. This allows for the computation of the thermal time constant spectra and the generation of device-compact thermal models. Moreover, the influence of the thermal pad surface area on... [more]

Compensated Load Flow Solutions for Distribution System State Estimation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: distribution systems, load flow, state estimation
State estimation of distribution systems typically relies on measurement sets with very low redundancy levels. In this paper, this fact is exploited by first solving a conventional load flow, using exclusively a critical set of measurements, and then compensating the solution to account for the few redundant measurements available. This leads to a suboptimal but sufficiently accurate estimate. It is shown how the sparse triangular factorization of the load flow Jacobian matrix can be fully exploited throughout the compensation-based procedure, preventing in this way the ill-conditioning associated with the gain matrix arising in the conventional least-squares formulation. Simulation results are provided for measurement configurations customarily found in distribution systems, showing the potential advantages of the proposed methodology.

The paper aimed to find an accurate and fast model to study the electromagnetic (EM) thermal (TH) filed coupling calculation for the TH analysis in the flux switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machine. It is extremely important to know the coupling mechanism between the EM field and TH field for the designers and users of the FSPM machines. An Integrally Embedded Discrete Fracture Model for Flow Simulation in Anisotropic Formations
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: anisotropic formation, embedded discrete fracture model, fractured reservoir simulation, matrix-fracture transmissibility
The embedded discrete fracture model (EDFM), among different flow simulation models, achieves a good balance between efficiency and accuracy. In the EDFM, micro-scale fractures that cannot be characterized individually need to be homogenized into the matrix, which may bring anisotropy into the matrix. However, the simplified matrix−fracture fluid exchange assumption makes it difficult for EDFM to address the anisotropic flow. In this paper, an integrally embedded discrete fracture model (iEDFM) suitable for anisotropic formations is proposed. Structured mesh is employed for the anisotropic matrix, and the fracture element, which consists of a group of connected fractures, is integrally embedded in the matrix grid. An analytic pressure distribution is derived for the point source in anisotropic formation expressed by permeability tensor, and applied to the matrix−fracture transmissibility calculation. Two case studies were conducted and compared with the analytic solution or fine grid r... [more]
