Simulation of Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells for High Efficiency with Lithium Fluoride Electron Carrier Selective Layer
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electric field, electron selectivity contact layer, lithium fluoride, silicon heterojunction solar cell, work function.
In this work, to ameliorate the quantum efficiency (QE), we made a valuable development by using wide band gap material, such as lithium fluoride (LiFx), as an emitter that also helped us to achieve outstanding efficiency with silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells. Lithium fluoride holds a capacity to achieve significant power conversion efficiency because of its dramatic improvement in electron extraction and injection, which was investigated using the AFORS-HET simulation. We used AFORS-HET to assess the restriction of numerous parameters which also provided an appropriate way to determine the role of diverse parameters in silicon solar cells. We manifested and preferred lithium fluoride as an interfacial layer to diminish the series resistance as well as shunt leakage and it was also beneficial for the optical properties of a cell. Due to the wide band gap and better surface passivation, the LiFx encouraged us to utilize it as the interfacial as well as the emitter layer. In addi... [more]

Deep Q-Network for Optimal Decision for Top-Coal Caving
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 3D-simulation, deep Q-network, deep reinforcement learning, discrete element method, top-coal caving.
In top-coal caving, the window control of hydraulic support is a key issue to the perfect economic benefit. The window is driven by the electro-hydraulic control system whose command is produced by the control model and the corresponding algorithm. However, the model of the window’s control is hard to establish, and the optimal policy of window action is impossible to calculate. This paper studies the issue theoretically and, based on the 3D simulation platform, proposes a deep reinforcement learning method to regulate the window action for top-coal caving. Then, the window control of top-coal caving is considered as the Markov decision process, for which the deep Q-network method of reinforcement learning is employed to regulate the window’s action effectively. In the deep Q-network, the reward of each step is set as the control criterion of the window action, and a four-layer fully connected neural network is used to approximate the optimal Q-value to get the optimal action of the wi... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: agent-based modeling, business model test, electricity storage system, exploratory modeling analysis.
Electricity storage systems (ESSs) are potential solutions to facilitate renewable energy transition. Lack of viable business models, as well as high levels of uncertainty in technology, economic, and institutional factors, form main barriers for wide implementation of ESSs worldwide and in the Netherlands. Therefore, the design of business models for an ESS is necessary for the development of ESSs. We elaborated on this problem before, and developed a design space for business models of ESSs in the context of the Netherlands. This conceptual paper provides a further view on barriers and uncertainties of ESS development in the Netherlands through the involvement of a business practitioner, elaboration of goals, objectives, and testing of ESS business model designs, suggests and provides a theoretical foundation for combining agent-based modeling and exploratory modeling analysis as a method to test and explore ESS business models, and provides an abstract conceptual agent-based model d... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, diesel engines, numerical simulation, pollutant emissions prediction.
In this paper, an integrated and automated methodology for the coupling between 1D- and 3D-CFD simulation codes is presented, which has been developed to support the design and calibration of new diesel engines. The aim of the proposed methodology is to couple 1D engine models, which may be available in the early stage engine development phases, with 3D predictive combustion simulations, in order to obtain reliable estimates of engine performance and emissions for newly designed automotive diesel engines. The coupling procedure features simulations performed in 1D-CFD by means of GT-SUITE and in 3D-CFD by means of Converge, executed within a specifically designed calculation methodology. An assessment of the coupling procedure has been performed by comparing its results with experimental data acquired on an automotive diesel engine, considering different working points, including both part load and full load conditions. Effect of Suction and Discharge Conditions on the Unsteady Flow Phenomena of Axial-Flow Reactor Coolant Pump
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: axial-flow pump, dynamic fluid force, pressure pulsation, reactor coolant pump, rotor-stator interaction, suction and discharge conditions, unsteady flow.
In order to study the effects of the suction and discharge conditions on the hydraulic performance and unsteady flow phenomena of an axial-flow reactor coolant pump (RCP), three RCP models with different suction and discharge configurations are analyzed by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The CFD results are validated by experimental data. The hydraulic performance of the three RCP models shows little difference. However, the unsteady flow phenomena of RCP are significantly affected by the variation of suction and discharge conditions. Compared with that of Model E-S (baseline, elbow-single nozzle), the pressure pulsation in rotating frame of Model S-S (straight pipe-single nozzle) and Model E-D (elbow-double nozzles) is weakened in different degrees and forms, due to the more uniform flow fields upstream and downstream of the impeller, respectively. It indicates that the generalized rotor-stator interaction (RSI) actually exists between the rotating impeller and all stationa... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: component-based model, frequency-domain model, LED lamps, power system harmonics, time-domain analysis.
Light emitting diode (LED) lamps are now an established lighting technology, which is becoming prevalent in all load sectors. However, LED lamps are non-linear electrical loads, and their impact on distribution system voltage quality must be evaluated. This paper provides a detailed analysis of time domain and frequency domain approaches for developing and evaluating models suitable for use in large scale steady-state harmonic power flow analysis of the low frequency (LF) emission of LED lamps. The considered approaches are illustrated using four general categories of LED lamps, which have been shown to cover the vast majority of LED lamps currently available on the market. The aim is an in-depth assessment of the ability of commonly applied models to represent the specific design characteristics of different categories of LED lamps. The accuracy of the models is quantitatively evaluated by means of laboratory tests, numerical simulations, and statistical analyses. This provides an exa... [more]

An Improved LPTN Method for Determining the Maximum Winding Temperature of a U-Core Motor
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: loading position, lumped-parameter thermal network, thermal half-resistance, uniform heat source.
In a traditional lumped-parameter thermal network, no distinction is made between the heat and non-heat sources, resulting in both larger heat flux and temperature drop in the uniform heat source. In this paper, an improved lumped-parameter thermal network is proposed to deal with such problems. The innovative aspect of this proposed method is that it considers the influence of heat flux change in the heat source, and then gives a half-resistance theory for the heat source to achieve the temperature drop balance. In addition, the coupling relationship between the boundary temperature and loading position of the heat generator is also added in the lumped-parameter thermal network, so as to amend the loading position and nodes’ temperature through iterations. This approach breaks the limitation of the traditional lumped-parameter thermal network: that the heat generator can only be loaded at the midpoint, which is critical to determining the maximum temperature in asymmetric heat dissipa... A Novel Approach on the Unipolar Axial Type Eddy Current Brake Model Considering the Skin Effect
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: braking torque, eddy current brake, Modelling, skin effect.
The braking torque mathematical modelling in electromagnetic eddy current brake (ECB) often ignores the skin effect that occurrs during operation. However this phenomenon can not be simply neglected. Therefore, this paper presents a mathematical model of braking torque for a unipolar axial type of ECB system with a non-magnetic disk, which considers the skin effects. The use of mathematical models that consider the existence of skin effects is significant in approaching the braking torque according to the actual condition. The utilization of generic calculations to the model of the ECB braking torque leads to invalid results. Hence, in this paper, the correction factor was added to improve the braking torque calculation as a comparator to the proposed equation. However, the modification and addition of the correction factor were only valid to estimate the low-speed regimes of torque, but very distant for the high-speed condition. From the comparison of calculated values using analytica... [more]

Modeling the Charging Behaviors for Electric Vehicles Based on Ternary Symmetric Kernel Density Estimation
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: charging behaviors, electric vehicles, kernel density estimation, optimum bandwidth.
The accurate modeling of the charging behaviors for electric vehicles (EVs) is the basis for the charging load modeling, the charging impact on the power grid, orderly charging strategy, and planning of charging facilities. Therefore, an accurate joint modeling approach of the arrival time, the staying time, and the charging capacity for the EVs charging behaviors in the work area based on ternary symmetric kernel density estimation (KDE) is proposed in accordance with the actual data. First and foremost, a data transformation model is established by considering the boundary bias of the symmetric KDE in order to carry out normal transformation on distribution to be estimated from all kinds of dimensions to the utmost extent. Then, a ternary symmetric KDE model and an optimum bandwidth model are established to estimate the transformed data. Moreover, an estimation evaluation model is also built to transform simulated data that are generated on a certain scale with the Monte Carlo method... [more]

± 180° Discontinuous PWM for Single-Phase PWM Converter of High-Speed Railway Propulsion System
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: discontinuous PWM, high-speed railway propulsion system, high-voltage IGBT, PWM converter, switching loss.
As high-capacity alternating current/direct current (ac/dc) power conversion systems, single-phase pulse-width modulation (PWM) converters used in high-speed railway propulsion systems adopt high-voltage Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) as switching elements. Due to their high breakdown voltage characteristics, the switching dynamics are inferior to those of low-voltage IGBTs and switching losses are more dominant than conduction losses despite operating at relatively low switching frequencies of hundreds to several kHz. To solve this problem, this paper proposes ± 180° discontinuous PWM (DPWM) suitable for a single-phase circuit. With the simple addition of offset voltages, the proposed DPWM method can be implemented easily and switching losses can be reduced by half by clamping the switching legs of the H-bridge converter to the positive or negative dc rail during every half cycle. In addition, temperature deviation between the power stacks can be minimized by using selecti... [more]

Generalized Modeling of Soft-Capture Manipulator with Novel Soft-Contact Joints
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: decoupled damper, generalized modeling method, soft capture, soft-contact joint.
The space-borne manipulator has been playing an important part in docking tasks. Docking collision can easily lead to instability of both the manipulator and floating base. Aiming at the problem of soft capture, a novel soft-contact joint with dual working modes is developed, especially to buffer and unload the spatial collision momentum. Furthermore, considering a series-wound soft-capture manipulator with multi-joints, a generalized modeling method was established by using the Kane approach. Both the benefits of soft-contact joint and the effectiveness of dynamics equations are verified in MATLAB and Adams software by simulations of a two-joint manipulator with eight-DOF. The comparative simulation results showed the advantages of the proposed soft-contact joint in reducing instability from spatial impact.

Numerical Simulation of Sulfur Deposit with Particle Release
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: acid gas reservoir, particle release, reservoir numerical simulation, solid sulfur deposit.
Sulfur deposition commonly occurs during the development of a high-sulfur gas reservoirs. Due to the high gas flow velocity near the wellbore, some of the deposited sulfur particles re-enter the pores and continue to migrate driven by the high-speed gas flow. The current mathematical model for sulfur deposition ignores the viscosity between particles, rising flow caused by turbulence, and the corresponding research on the release ratio of particles. In order to solve the above problems, firstly, the viscous force and rising force caused by turbulence disturbance are introduced, and the critical release velocity of sulfur particles is derived. Then, a release model of sulfur particles that consider the critical release velocity and release ratio is proposed by combining the probability theory with the hydrodynamics theory. Notably, based on the experimental data, the deposition ratio of sulfur particles and the damage coefficient in the sulfur damage model are determined. Finally, a com... [more]

A Building Block Method for Modeling and Small-Signal Stability Analysis of the Autonomous Microgrid Operation
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: microgrid modeling, stability analysis, state-space modeling.
The task of the whole microgrid state-space matrix creation is usually done in a preferred textual programming language, and it presents a complicated, time-consuming, and error-prone job for a researcher without good coding practices. To ease the modeling task, contribute to the adaptation of new microgrid structures, control algorithms, and devices, and to improve the flexibility of the model, a graphical element building block method is proposed in this paper. With the proposed approach model creation of the whole microgrid is reduced to the creation of the individual element state-space model that is linked with other elements in a logical way with a graphical connection. Elements are then grouped into meaningful wholes and encapsulated with the appropriate graphical user interface that enables easy parameter modification and model complexity change. More detailed DC/DC and DC/AC models of converters than those in the literature concerning microgrid stability are presented in this... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: gas fuel injector, injection efficiency, opening manner, sealing method, steady injection characteristic.
The steady-state injection characteristic of gas fuel injector is one of the key factors that affects the performance of gas fuel engine. The influences of different injection strategies, such as different injection angles and different injection positions, on the mixing performance in gas-fueled engine have been emphasized in previous literatures. However, the research on the injection characteristics of the gas fuel injector itself are insufficient. The three-dimensional steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of two kinds of injectors, in different opening manners, and the other two kinds of injectors, in different sealing methods, were established in this paper. The core region speed, stagnation pressure loss and mass flow rate were compared. Additionally, the effective injection pressure (EIP) concept was also used to evaluate the injection efficiency of gas fuel injector. The simulation results show that the jet speed of the pull-open injector is higher than the pu... [more]

The Performance Gap in Energy-Efficient Office Buildings: How the Occupants Can Help?
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: agent-based modeling, Energy Efficiency, energy performance gap, energy savings, occupant behavior.
Rising demand and limited production of electricity are instrumental in spreading the awareness of cautious energy use, leading to the global demand for energy-efficient buildings. This compels the construction industry to smartly design and effectively construct these buildings to ensure energy performance as per design expectations. However, the research tells a different tale: energy-efficient buildings have performance issues. Among several reasons behind the energy performance gap, occupant behavior is critical. The occupant behavior is dynamic and changes over time under formal and informal influences, but the traditional energy simulation programs assume it as static throughout the occupancy. Effective behavioral interventions can lead to optimized energy use. To find out the energy-saving potential based on simulated modified behavior, this study gathers primary building and occupant data from three energy-efficient office buildings in major cities of Pakistan and categorizes t... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cosimulation method, power system dynamic performance, sensitivity analysis, stochastic unit commitment, subhourly modeling.
Subhourly modeling of power systems and the use of the stochastic optimization are two relevant solutions proposed in the literature to address the integration of stochastic renewable energy sources. With this aim, this paper deals with the effect of different formulations of the subhourly stochastic unit commitment (SUC) problem on power system dynamics. Different SUC models are presented and embedded into time domain simulations (TDS) through a cosimulation platform. Second-Order Approximation of the Seismic Reflection Coefficient in Thin Interbeds
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: amplitude variation with incident angle (AVA), reflection coefficient, second-order approximation, seismic modeling, thin bed, thin interbed.
As most of the lithostratigraphic reservoirs in China are thin interbeds, the study of seismic responses in thin interbeds is an integral part of lithologic reservoir exploration. However, at present, the research on seismic reflection coefficients of thin interbeds in exploration seismology is still weak, which leads to the lack of theoretical basis for the subsequent interpretation of amplitude variation with offset (AVO) related to thin interbed. To solve this problem, in this paper, we proposed second-order approximate equations of the seismic reflection coefficients in thin-bed and thin-interbed layers. Under the assumption of a small impedance contrast in layered media, we made a second-order approximation with a more evident physical meaning to the reflection coefficient calculation method proposed by Kennett. Then, based on the test of the single thin-layer theoretical model, it was confirmed that the second-order approximation equation of the PP-wave (reflected compressional w... [more]

3D Mapping of the Sprinkler Activation Time
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, detection, fire, performance-based design, smoke management, suppression.
Sprinkler activation is one of the key events defining the course of a compartment fire. The time when activation occurs is commonly used in the determination of the design fire scenario, which is the cornerstone of the design of building fire safety features. A well-known model of sprinkler activation (response time index (RTI) model) was introduced into the numerical scheme of the ANSYS Fluent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package. The novel way in which the model is used is the calculation of the time for sprinkler activation within each discrete cell of the domain. The proposed novel approach was used in a case-study to assess the effects of comfort mode natural ventilation on a sprinkler’s activation pattern. It was found that hinged vents in the comfort mode had a significant effect on sprinkler activation, both in terms of delaying it as well as limiting the total number of cells in which the sprinkler would have activated. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Brazilian test, Digital Image Correlation, MAPE, Simulation, Spider Berea sandstone, stress distribution.
Characterizing the mechanical behavior of rocks plays a crucial role to optimize the fracturing process in unconventional reservoirs. However, due to the intrinsic anisotropy and heterogeneity in unconventional resources, fracture process prediction remains the most significant challenge for sustainable and economic hydrocarbon production. During the deformation tracking under compression, deploying conventional methods (strain gauge, extensometer, etc.) is insufficient to measure the deformation since the physical attachment of the device is restricted to the size of the sample, monitoring limited point-wise deformation, producing difficulties in data retrieval, and a tendency to lose track in failure points, etc. Where conventional methods are limited, the application of digital image correlation (DIC) provides detailed and additional information of strain evolution and fracture patterns under loading. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bagging, decision tree, ensemble, lagged data, Light GBM, Machine Learning, photovoltaic power forecasting, random forest, XGBoost.
As the world is aware, the trend of generating energy sources has been changing from conventional fossil fuels to sustainable energy. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the ratio of renewable energy sources should be increased, and solar and wind power, typically, are driving this energy change. However, renewable energy sources highly depend on weather conditions and have intermittent generation characteristics, thus embedding uncertainty and variability. As a result, it can cause variability and uncertainty in the power system, and accurate prediction of renewable energy output is essential to address this. To solve this issue, much research has studied prediction models, and machine learning is one of the typical methods. In this paper, we used a bagging model to predict solar energy output. Bagging generally uses a decision tree as a base learner. However, to improve forecasting accuracy, we proposed a bagging model using an ensemble model as a base learner and adding pas... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Laplace circuit models, parasitic elements, phase-shift full bridge converter, stray capacitance.
A phase-shift full bridge converter is analyzed in detail in continuous conduction mode for one switching cycle for both the leading and lagging legs of the primary bridge. The objective of the study is to determine how the stray capacitance of the transformer, and the capacitances of the diodes in the bridge rectifier affect the converter functionality. Starting from some experimental results, Laplace equivalent circuit models and describing equations are derived for each significant time interval during the switching cycle and are validated through simulations and experimental measurements. The resulting equations are of great interest in the high-power density domain because they can be used to design a clamping circuit for the output rectifier bridge accurately.
