Keywords: fog unit, heat and mass transfer, mathematical model wet scrubber, Optimization.
Optimal performance parameters must be found in order to organize efficient heat and mass transfer and effective flue gas cooling using a wet scrubber. Mathematical models are widely used for system optimization. However, a significant number of the available models have application limitations. This study presents a universal model for heat and mass transfer simulation in a scrubber called a fog unit, which has been developed and validated. Validation was performed by comparing the experimental and calculated results. Good agreement was achieved among the data, with differences between results not exceeding 10%. The model facilitates an investigation of the effects of gas flow, droplet size, and sprayed water on heat recovery from flue gas. An experimental matrix for fog unit capacity which included five main variables was designed and analyzed. The boundaries of the parameters are set considering the results of the experiments. The optimization method used is the path of the steepest... [more]

Keywords: data filtering, lightGBM, Machine Learning, PV performance modelling, PV system.
In photovoltaic (PV) systems, energy yield is one of the essential pieces of information to the stakeholders (grid operators, maintenance operators, financial units, etc.). The amount of energy produced by a photovoltaic system in a specific time period depends on the weather conditions, including snow and dust, the actual PV modules’ and inverters’ efficiency and balance-of-system losses. The energy yield can be estimated by using empirical models with accurate input data. However, most of the PV systems do not include on-site high-class measurement devices for irradiance and other weather conditions. For this reason, the use of reanalysis-based or satellite-based data is currently of significant interest in the PV community and combining the data with decomposition and transposition irradiance models, the actual Plane-of-Array operating conditions can be determined. In this paper, we are proposing an efficient and accurate approach for PV output energy modelling by combining a new da... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3-D thermal modelling, active tectonics, heat flow, temperature profile, thermal structure.
The Zagros thrust belt is a large orogenic zone located along the southwest region of Iran. To obtain a better knowledge of this important mountain chain, we elaborated the first 3-D model reproducing the thermal structure of its northwestern part, i.e., the Lurestan arc. This study is based on a 3-D structural model obtained using published geological sections and available information on the depth of the Moho discontinuity. The analytical calculation procedure took into account the temperature variation due to: (1) The re-equilibrated conductive state after thrusting, (2) frictional heating, (3) heat flow density data, and (4) a series of geologically derived constraints. Both geotherms and isotherms were obtained using this analytical methodology. The results pointed out the fundamental control exerted by the main basement fault of the region, i.e., the Main Frontal Thrust (MFT), in governing the thermal structure of the crust, the main parameter being represented by the amount of b... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clustering algorithms, dynamic mode decomposition, feature detection, flow reconstruction, Machine Learning, modal decompositions, spatial agglomeration, turbulent flows.
Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) techniques have risen as prominent feature identification methods in the field of fluid dynamics. Any of the multiple variables of the DMD method allows to identify meaningful features from either experimental or numerical flow data on a data-driven manner. Performing a DMD analysis requires handling matrices V ∈ R n p × N , where n p and N are indicative of the spatial and temporal resolutions. The DMD analysis of a complex flow field requires long temporal sequences of well resolved data, and thus the memory footprint may become prohibitively large. In this contribution, the effect that principled spatial agglomeration (i.e., reduction in n p via clustering) has on the results derived from the DMD analysis is investigated. We compare twelve different clustering algorithms on three testcases, encompassing different flow regimes: a synthetic flow field, a R e D = 60 flow around a cylinder cross section, and a R... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 storage, heavy crude oil, immiscible flooding, offshore Guangdong province, reef reservoir, water-alternating-CO2.
In this paper, the immiscible water-alternating-CO2 flooding process at the LH11-1 oilfield, offshore Guangdong Province, was firstly evaluated using full-field reservoir simulation models. Based on a 3D geological model and oil production history, 16 scenarios of water-alternating-CO2 injection operations with different water alternating gas (WAG) ratios and slug sizes, as well as continuous CO2 injection (Con-CO2) and primary depletion production (No-CO2) scenarios, have been simulated spanning 20 years. The results represent a significant improvement in oil recovery by CO2 WAG over both Con-CO2 and No-CO2 scenarios. The WAG ratio and slug size of water affect the efficiency of oil recovery and CO2 injection. The optimum operations are those with WAG ratios lower than 1:2, which have the higher ultimate oil recovery factor of 24%. Although WAG reduced the CO2 injection volume, the CO2 storage efficiency is still high, more than 84% of the injected CO2 was sequestered in the reservoir... [more]
Investigation of Vortical Structures and Turbulence Characteristics in Corner Separation in an Axial Compressor Stator Using DDES
Jun Li, Jun Hu, Chenkai Zhang.
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compressor, corner separation, DDES, turbulence, vortex.
In order to investigate the flow structure and unsteady behavior of three-dimensional corner separation, a delayed detached-eddy simulation (DDES) method based on the Spalart−Allmaras (SA) model is performed on the third-stage stator of a multistage low-speed axial compressor. The stator simulation is validated by experiments before flow mechanism analysis. The complicated flow fields in the stator are then described step by step. Firstly, the structure and development process of vortices in corner separation flow are analyzed. Secondly, the velocity histogram of the monitor points in the mainstream and corner separation regions is obtained, and the velocity distribution of the corner separation region is discussed. Finally, Reynolds stress, Lumley anisotropy, turbulence energy spectra, and helicity density are discussed to understand the turbulence behavior of the corner separation flow in the stator. The results show that the corner separation appears at even the design condition and... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, off-design analysis, organic Rankine cycle, preliminary design, radial outflow turbine.
Recently, the advantages of radial outflow turbines have been outstanding in various operating conditions of the organic Rankine cycle. However, there are only a few studies of such turbines, and information on the design procedure is insufficient. The main purpose of this study is to provide more detailed information on the design methodology of the turbine. In this paper, a preliminary design program of a radial outflow turbine for organic Rankine cycles was developed. The program determines the main specifications of the turbine through iterative calculations using the enthalpy loss model and deviation angle model. For reliability evaluation of the developed algorithm, a 400.0 kW turbine for R143a was designed. The designed turbine was validated through computational fluid dynamics. As a result, the accuracy of the program was about 95% based on the turbine power, which shows that it is reliable. In addition, the turbine target performance could be achieved by fine-tuning the blade... [more]

Keywords: dynamic model, fatigue damage accumulation, load sharing, reliability analysis, survival signature, wind turbine drivetrain.
The wind turbine drivetrain suffers significant impact loads that severely affect the reliability and safety of wind turbines. Bearings and gears within the drivetrain are critical components with high repair costs and lengthy downtime. To realistically assess the system reliability, we propose to establish an electromechanical coupling dynamic model of the wind turbine considering the control strategy and environmental parameters and evaluate the system’s reliability of wind turbine drivetrain based on loads of gears and bearings. This paper focuses on the dynamic reliability analysis of the wind turbine under the control strategy and environmental conditions. SIMPACK (v9.7, Dassault Systèmes, Gilching, Germany) is used to develop the aero-hydro-servo-elastic coupling dynamic model with the full drivetrain that considers the flexibility of the tower and blade, the stochastic loads of wind and waves, gear meshing features, as well as the control strategy. The system reliability level o... [more]

Michele Libralato, Giovanni Murano, Alessandra De Angelis, Onorio Saro, Vincenzo Corrado.
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building simulation, climate change, heat and moisture transfer, weather files.
Heat and moisture (HM) transfer simulations of building envelopes and whole building energy simulations require adequate weather files. The common approach is to use weather data of reference years constructed from meteorological records. The weather record affects the capability of representing the real weather of the resulting reference years. In this paper the problem of the influence of the length of the records on the representativeness of the reference years is addressed and its effects are evaluated also for the applicative case of the moisture accumulation risk analysis with the Glaser Method and with DELPHIN 6, confirming that records shorter than 10 years could lead to less representative reference years. On the other hand, it is shown that reference years obtained from longer periods are not representative of the most recent years, which present higher dry-bulb air temperatures due to a short-term climate change effect observed in all the considered weather records. An alter... [more]
Calibration of the Interaction Parameters between the Proppant and Fracture Wall and the Effects of These Parameters on Proppant Distribution
Mingzhong Li, Chunting Liu, Guodong Zhang.
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: calibration method, coupled CFD–DEM model, interaction parameters, unevenly distributed proppant diameter, wall roughness.
Saltation and reputation (creep) dominate proppant transport rather than suspension during slickwater fracturing, due to the low sand-carrying capacity of the slickwater. Thus, the interaction parameters between proppants and fracture walls, which affect saltation and reputation, play a more critical role in proppant transport. In this paper, a calibration method for the interaction parameters between proppants and walls is built. A three-dimensional coupled computational fluid dynamics−discrete element method (CFD−DEM) model is established to study the effects of the interaction parameters on proppant migration, considering the wall roughness and unevenly distributed diameters of proppants. The simulation results show that a lower static friction coefficient and rolling friction coefficient can result in a smaller equilibrium height of the sand bank and a smaller build angle and drawdown angle, which is beneficial for carrying the proppant to the distal end of the fracture. The wall r... [more]

Keywords: building simulation, grey-box model, parameter estimation, thermal dynamics, Unscented Kalman Filter.
Nearly 40% of primary energy consumption is related to the usage of energy in Buildings. Energy-related data such as indoor air temperature and power consumption of heating/cooling systems can be now collected due to the widespread diffusion of Internet-of-Things devices. Such energy data can be used (i) to train data-driven models than learn the thermal properties of buildings and (ii) to predict indoor temperature evolution. In this paper, we present a Grey-box model to estimate thermal dynamics in buildings based on Unscented Kalman Filter and thermal network representation. The proposed methodology has been applied in two different buildings with two different thermal network discretizations to test its accuracy in indoor air temperature prediction. Due to a lack of a real-world data sampled by Internet of Things (IoT) devices, a realistic data-set has been generated using the software Energy+, by referring to real industrial building models. Results on synthetic and realistic data... [more]

Keywords: ceramic membrane, CFX, Simulation.
Currently, the oil industry deals with the challenge of produced-water proper disposal, and the membrane-separation technology appears as an important tool on the treatment of these waters. In this sense, this work developed a mathematical model for simulating the oil/water separation by a ceramic membrane. The aim was to investigate the thermal aspects of the separation process via computational fluid dynamic, using the Ansys CFX® 15 software (15, Ansys, Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA). Oil concentration, pressure, and velocity distributions, as well as permeation velocity, are presented and analyzed. It was verified that the mathematical model was capable of accurately representing the studied phenomena and that temperature strongly influences the flow behavior.

Keywords: Exergy Efficiency, financial analysis, organic Rankine cycle, parabolic trough collector, trigeneration.
The utilization of solar irradiation in the building sector is vital to create sustainable systems. Trigeneration systems are highly efficient systems that usually produce electricity, heating and cooling which are the main energy needs in the buildings. The objective of this work is the energetic and financial investigation of three different solar-driven trigeneration systems that can be applied in buildings with high energy needs (e.g., hospitals or commercial buildings). The parabolic trough solar collector (PTC) is selected to be used because it is the most mature solar concentrating technology. The examined configurations practically are different combinations of organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with heat pumps. System 1 includes a PTC coupled to an ORC which feeds an absorption heat pump machine. System 2 includes a PTC which simultaneously feeds an ORC and absorption machine. System 3 includes a PTC which feeds an ORC and a heat exchanger for heating, while the ORC is fed with and e... [more]

Keywords: CFX, heat, mass, moisture, numerical simulation, temperature.
In the manufacturing process of ceramic brick, the step of drying needs the control of process variables to uniformly dry the porous material, producing a good end-product. The majority of numerical simulations involving drying of ceramic materials is performed considering only the solid domain, resulting in a very simplified and limited study. This way, the objective of this work is the analysis of the drying process with hot air of an industrial hollow clay brick inside the oven at different temperatures by using computational fluid dynamic (CFD). The results of the temperature and water mass distribution inside the brick and of air in the oven at different times of the drying process are shown, analyzed and checked with experimental data, and it was obtained in a concordance with the data. An equation to calculate the brick water mass diffusivity depending on the drying air temperature was proposed.

Keywords: frozen soil, numerical modeling, power transmission line, reduced-scale modeling test, ultimate uplift load.
In order to analyze the uplift bearing capacity of cone-cylinder foundation for transmission line in frozen soil regions, a series of reduced-scale modeling tests and numerical simulations are carried out. First, three reduced-scale cone-cylinder foundations with the same sizes, that are five times smaller than the prototype, are made and then loaded under uplift load at −5 °C, −10 °C, and −15 °C, respectively. On this basis, the foundations of nine sizes are modeled and loaded by numerical simulation. The impact of three dimension factors, including the ratio of depth to bottom width ( λ = h t / D t ), the top diameter of the cone-cylinder (d), and the bottom diameter of the cone-cylinder (D), on the uplift bearing capacity of foundations have been investigated. The results reveal that, for cone-cylinder foundation, the uplift bearing capacity is obviously affected by the freezing temperatures and the foundation sizes. The capacity is negatively correlated with the former. W... [more]

Keywords: AC loss, high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable, tri-axial HTS cable.
Currently, various types of superconducting power cables are being developed worldwide, and research and development of a tri-axial high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power cable are underway. The tri-axial HTS power cable reduces the amount of HTS wire due to its multilayer structure, has high current characteristics, and has less loss than other superconducting cables. However, since the radii of each phase are different, magnetic coupling makes it difficult to measure power loss and analyze performance. This paper presents the results of the design and performance analysis of a tri-axial HTS power cable. A prototype tri-axial HTS power cable was designed with a rated power of 60 MVA, a rated voltage of 23 kV and a length of 6 m, and was tested by cooling to 77 K with liquid nitrogen. We analyzed the performance of the tri-axial HTS power cable in normal conditions through a finite element method (FEM) simulation and experiment. Acoustic Modeling and Vibration Characteristics of Supersonic Inlet Buzz
Jianfeng Zhu, Wenguo Luo, Yuqing Wei, Cheng Yan, Yancheng You.
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acoustic modeling, damping, oscillation amplitude, supersonic inlet buzz.
The buzz phenomenon of a typical supersonic inlet is analyzed on the basis of numerical simulations and duct acoustic theory. Considering that the choked inlet could be treated as a duct with one end closed, a one-dimensional (1D) mathematical model based on the duct acoustic theory is proposed to describe the periodic pressure oscillation of the little buzz and the big buzz. The results of the acoustic model agree well with that of the numerical simulations and the experimental data. It could verify that the dominated oscillation patterns of the little buzz and the big buzz are closely related to the first and second resonant mode of the standing wave, respectively. The discrepancies between the numerical simulation and the ideal acoustic model might be attributed to the viscous damping in the fluid oscillation system. In order to explore the damping, a small perturbation jet is introduced to trigger the resonance of the buzz system and the nonlinear amplification effect of resonance... [more]

Keywords: green roof, green systems, Rooftop greenhouse, two-dimensional hygrothermal simulation, urban local microclimate modelling.
In urban areas, a considerable proportion of energy demand is allocated to buildings. Since rooftops constitute one-fourth of all urban surfaces, an increasing amount of attention is paid to achieving the most efficient shapes and component designs compatible with every climate and urban context, for rooftops of varying sizes. In this work, an open-source implementation of the inverse design method is introduced. First, the governing equations in cylindrical and curvilinear coordinate systems are derived, consolidating the somewhat inconsistent formulations that are available in the literature. Then, a convergence analysis of the method is performed in order to characterize the behavior of the discretization error and deduce the mesh resolution requirements. A validation of the method output with respect to high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations is then presented; it is dem... [more]
