April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 suppression, fire suppression, LES, synergistic effect, water droplets.
Recently, water has been employed as a supportive agent for the preparation of multiple suppressing agents including aqueous film forming foams (AFFF), which is combined with different kinds of gases for its various applications. In this study, the water mist is chosen for the gas-suppressing agent such as carbon dioxide. Our work investigated the suppression effects of water droplets on the n-heptane pool fire, and its mixture with carbon dioxide, respectively. The size and frequency of droplets with their effect on temperature and suppression was compared to observe the difference in the suppression. Initially, it was found that the droplets having a larger droplet size were found to be more efficient as compared to the smaller droplets with respect to the heat release rate, temperature, and radiation. Afterwards, a mixture of water droplets and carbon dioxide was simultaneously discharged to compare the difference between these two suppressing agents. It was found that the synergist... [more]

Keywords: energy simulation, ETS heater, experimentation, Mongolian ger, solar PV.
There are approximately 200,000 households living in detached houses and gers (yurts) with small coal stoves that burn raw coal in Ulaanbaatar city. A proper heating system and improvement of the energy efficiency of residential dwellings are vitally important for Ulaanbaatar city to reduce air pollution as well as for the operation of the current central energy system. This study shows the experimental results for two gers with two different heating systems and different thermal insulation, for investigating the merits of each. The technical feasibility of the system consisting of an electric thermal storage (ETS) heater with a daytime charging schedule and areal photovoltaic (PV) system was also examined by using a simulation with software developed in MATLAB (R2020a, MathWorks, USA). As a result of the experiment, the indoor comfort level and energy efficiency of the ger with added insulation and an ETS heater with nighttime charging were shown to be enhanced compared with those of... April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biomass combustion, CFD modeling, pellet boiler, renewable heating.
The paper presents the results of numerical and experimental studies aimed at developing a new design of a 10 kW low-emission heating boiler fired with wood pellets. The boiler is to meet stringent requirements in terms of efficiency (η > 90%) and emissions per 10% O2: CO < 500 mg/Nm3, NOx ≤ 200 mg/Nm3, and dust ≤ 20 mg/Nm3; these emission restrictions are as prescribed in the applicable ECODESIGN Directive in the European Union countries. An innovative aspect of the boiler structure (not yet present in domestic boilers) is the circular flow of exhaust gases around the centrally placed combustion chamber. The use of such a solution ensures high-efficiency, low-emission combustion and meeting the requirements of ECODESIGN. The results of the numerical calculations were verified and confirmed experimentally, obtaining average emission values of the limited gases CO = 91 mg/Nm3, and NOx = 197 mg/Nm3. The temperature measured in the furnace is 450−500 °C and in the flue it was 157−197 °... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, ejectors, empirical correlation, refrigeration cycle.
An ejector is a simple mechanical device that can be integrated with power generation or the refrigeration cycle to enhance their performance. Owing to the complex flow behavior in the ejector, the performance prediction of the ejector is done by numerical simulations. However, to evaluate the performance of an ejector integrated power cycle or refrigeration cycle, the need for simpler and more reliable thermodynamic models to estimate the performance of the ejector persists. This research, therefore, aims at developing a single mathematical correlation that can predict the ejector performance with reasonable accuracy. The proposed correlation relates the entrainment ratio and the pressure rise across the ejector to the area ratio and the mass flow rate of the primary flow. R141b is selected as the ejector refrigerant, and the results obtained through the proposed correlation are validated through numerical solutions. The comparison between the analytical and numerical with experimenta... [more]

Takeshi Ishihara, Yuliang Liu.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combined wave and current conditions, directional spreading function, dynamic response, hydrodynamic models, mooring tension, semi-submersible floating offshore wind turbine.
In this study, advanced hydrodynamic models are proposed to predict dynamic response of a floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) in combined wave and current conditions and validated by laboratory and full-scale semi-submersible platforms. Firstly, hydrodynamic coefficient models are introduced to evaluate the added mass and drag coefficients in a wide range of Reynolds numbers. An advanced hydrodynamic model is then proposed to calculate the drag force of cylinder in combined wave and current conditions. The proposed model is validated by the water tank tests in the current-only, wave-only and current-wave conditions and is used to investigate the effect of current on the dynamic response of FOWT. Finally, the full-scale semi-submersible platform used in the Fukushima demonstration project is investigated. It is found that the predicted dynamic responses of platform by the proposed hydrodynamic models are improved by the directional spreading function of the sea wave spectrum and show... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building stock, energy analysis, flexible modeling approach, non-residential buildings, reference building.
This paper proposes a flexible modeling approach to develop a theoretical reference building (RB) for energy analysis. We designed an RB for five non-residential buildings, using dynamic simulation from statistically analyzed data of building stock in South Korea. For modeling, four subsets of data—form, envelope, system, and operation—were assessed. This study uses the autosizing function within EnergyPlus, to develop the RB. The proposed approach allows for a flexible design where capacities and flow rates of the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system match the newly defined RB model. This approach would be ideal for closing the gap between the architectural data and equipment elements. The RB developed in this study allows for performing energy performance analysis by end-use. The analysis results by the end-use can provide support for country-level greenhouse gas (GHG)-mitigation-strategy development.

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: e-shared mobility, electric shared mobility, electric vehicles, new mobility, shared mobility challenges, shared mobility systems development, social network analysis, sustainable transport systems.
Due to the development of the shared economy, increasingly more shared mobility providers have launched services based on the use of electric vehicles. The increasing growth of electric shared mobility services has produced various types of problems that do not occur (or occur with a limited effect) under conventional shared mobility systems. This increase in electric shared mobility problems has led to many effects, including limitations of the system zones or going out of business. To avoid difficulties in the functioning of electric shared mobility systems, various scientific studies have been undertaken to model and optimize the operation of these systems. Modeling and optimization mainly relate to one category of the system—for example, only to bike sharing. However, to understand the system of electric shared mobility holistically, there is a need to define the criteria generally as stimulants or destimulants. Based on these assumptions, we conducted research on the identificatio... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aerodynamic analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, data mining, linear regression, Machine Learning, support vector regression, surrogate modeling.
Machine learning and data mining techniques are nowadays being used in many business sectors to exploit the data in order to detect trends, discover certain features and patters, or even predict the future. However, in the field of aerodynamics, the application of these techniques is still in the initial stages. This paper focuses on exploring the benefits that machine learning and data mining techniques can offer to aerodynamicists in order to extract knowledge from the CFD data and to make quick predictions of aerodynamic coefficients. For this purpose, three aerodynamic databases (NACA0012 airfoil, RAE2822 airfoil and 3D DPW wing) have been used and results show that machine-learning and data-mining techniques have a huge potential also in this field.

Keywords: bio-based building, coal consumption, energy simulation, heating energy, rural residential building, straw bale construction.
Due to the cold winters in northeast China, the energy consumption of the rural residential buildings is much higher in this region than in other regions. In this study, the energy sustainability of bio-based wall construction is examined through applications in rural residential buildings. Comparisons of the energy sustainability of the bio-based wall constructions and the conventional wall constructions are evaluated using IESVE-2019 computational simulation. The results show notable reductions in heating energy requirements and coal use, which is the major heating source for rural residential buildings in China. The results show that reductions of 45.82−204.07 kWh/m2/year in heating energy requirements and more than 40% in coal use are possible through application of bio-based wall constructions. The application of bio-based wall construction will result in lower seasonal air pollution and coal use through straw burning in northeast China.

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD simulation, dynamic cavitation, textured surfaces.
In any hydraulic machine there are lubricated couplings that could become critical beyond certain operating conditions. This paper presents the simulation results concerning textured surfaces with the aim of improving the performance of lubricated couplings in relative motion. The texturing design requires much care to obtain good improvements, and it is essential to analyze both the geometric features of the dimples and the characteristics of the coupled surfaces, like the sliding velocity and gap height. For this purpose, several CFD simulations have been performed to study the behavior of the fluid bounded in the coupling, considering dimples with different shapes, size, and spatial distribution. The simulations consider the onset of gaseous cavitation to evaluate the influence of this phenomenon on the pressure distribution generated by the textured surface. The analyses have pointed out that it is critical to correctly predict the behavior of the textured surface in the presence o... [more]

Damian Joachimiak, Andrzej Frąckowiak.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, experiment, flow coefficient, labyrinth seal, leakage, mini gap.
This paper focuses on the analysis of the gas flow in the axisymmetric mini gap bounded by the surface of the top of the labyrinth seal tooth and the surface of the body. It includes the results of experimental research and numerical calculations. Experimental research focused on the analysis of gas flow for six clearance heights in a wide range of pressure drops. Based on this research, we determined the mass flow in the clearance. Using the Saint-Venant equation, we determined the flow coefficient versus the pressure ratio upstream and downstream from the seal. Flow coefficients for various clearance heights obtained from the experiment can be divided into two data groups, the values of which differ significantly. To explain changes in the value of the gas flow coefficient for selected clearance heights, numerical analysis of the said gas flow was performed using the Fluent software. This analysis allowed us to explain the reason for the variability of the flow coefficient. This rese... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BESS, high-RES penetration, Madeira island, non-interconnected island system, primary frequency control.
The defossilization of power generation is a prerequisite goal in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transit for a sustainable economy. Achieving this goal requires increasing the penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) such as solar and wind power. The gradual shrinking of conventional generation units in an energy map introduces new challenges to the stability of power systems as there is a considerable reduction of stored rotational energy in the synchronous generators (SGs) and the capability to control their power output, which has been taken for granted until today. Inertia and primary reserve reduction have a substantial effect on the ability of the power system to maintain its security and self-resilience during contingency events. Such issues become more evident in the case of non-interconnected islands (NII) as they have unique features associated with their small size and low inertia. The present study examines in depth the NII system of Madeira, which is co... [more]
Probabilistic Approaches to the Security Analysis of Smart Grid with High Wind Penetration: The Case of Jeju Island’s Power Grids
Sunoh Kim, Jin Hur.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Monte-Carlo simulation, parameter estimation, power flow calculation, power grid security limit, Weibull distribution.
As the importance of renewable generating resources has grown around the world, South Korea is also trying to expand the proportion of renewable generating resources in the power generation sector. Among the various renewable energy sources, wind generating resources are emerging as a key alternative to conventional power generations in the electricity sector in Korea accounted for 17.7 GW of total capacity by 2030. As wind generating resources are gradually replacing traditional generating resources, the system security and reliability are negatively affected because of the variability, due to intermittent outputs. Therefore, existing power grids will need to be correctly re-measured to cover the large scale of renewable energy, including wind generation. To expand the grid, we must understand the characteristics of renewable energy and the impact of its adoption in the grid. In this paper, we analyze various characteristics of wind power generation, and then we propose a probabilisti... [more]
Off-Grid DoA Estimation on Non-Uniform Linear Array Using Constrained Hermitian Matrix

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: atomic norm minimization (ANM), continuous compressive sensing, non-uniform linear array (NULA), off-grid direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation, super-resolution.
In this paper, an off-grid direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation algorithm which can work on a non-uniform linear array (NULA) is proposed. The original semidefinite programming (SDP) representation of the atomic norm exploits a summation of one-rank matrices constructed by atoms, where the summation of one-rank matrices equals a Hermitian Toeplitz matrix when using the uniform linear array (ULA). On the other hand, when the antennas in the array are placed arbitrarily, the summation of one-rank matrices is a Hermitian matrix whose diagonal elements are equivalent. Motivated by this property, the proposed algorithm replaces the Hermitian Toeplitz matrix in the original SDP with the constrained Hermitian matrix. Additionally, when the antennas are placed symmetrically, the performance can be enforced by adding extra constraints to the Hermitian matrix. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves higher estimation accuracy and resolution than other algorithms on both... [more]

On Applications of Elements Modelled by Fractional Derivatives in Circuit Theory
Jacek Gulgowski, Tomasz P. Stefański, Damian Trofimowicz.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: circuit simulation, circuit theory, fractional calculus, transmission lines.
In this paper, concepts of fractional-order (FO) derivatives are reviewed and discussed with regard to element models applied in the circuit theory. The properties of FO derivatives required for the circuit-level modeling are formulated. Potential problems related to the generalization of transmission-line equations with the use of FO derivatives are presented. It is demonstrated that some formulations of FO derivatives have limited applicability in the circuit theory. Out of the most popular approaches considered in this paper, only the Grünwald−Letnikov and Marchaud definitions (which are actually equivalent) satisfy the semigroup property and are naturally representable in the phasor domain. The generalization of this concept, i.e., the two-sided fractional Ortigueira−Machado derivative, satisfies the semigroup property, but its phasor representation is less natural. Other ideas (including the Riemann−Liouville and Caputo derivatives—with a finite or an infinite base point) seem to... [more]

Keywords: ‘Hill Charts’, hydro-electric plant, power hardware-in-the-loop, real-time simulation, reduced-scale model, testing and validation, variable speed operation.
Variable Speed Hydro-Electric Plant (VS-HEP) equipped with power electronics has been increasingly introduced into the hydraulic context. This paper is targeting a VS-HEP Power Hardware-In-the-Loop (PHIL) real-time simulation system, which is dedicated to different hydraulic operation schemes tests and control laws validation. This work introduces a practical and generalised modelling hydraulic modelling approach, which is based on ‘Hill Charts’ measurements provided by industrial manufacturers. The hydraulic static model is analytically obtained by using mathematical optimization routines. In addition, the nonlinear dynamic model of the guide vane actuator is introduced in order to evaluate the effects of the induced dynamics on the electric control performances. Moreover, the reduced-scale models adapted to different laboratory conditions can be established by applying sc... [more]
A Broadband Enhanced Structure-Preserving Reduced-Order Interconnect Macromodeling Method for Large-Scale Equation Sets of Transient Interconnect Circuit Problems
Ning Wang, Huifang Wang, Shiyou Yang.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: interconnect circuit, large scale equation set, model order reduction, transient response, wideband frequency.
In the transient analysis of an engineering power electronics device, the order of its equivalent circuit model is excessive large. To eliminate this issue, some model order reduction (MOR) methods are proposed in the literature. Compared to other MOR methods, the structure-preserving reduced-order interconnect macromodeling (SPRIM) based on Krylov subspaces will achieve a higher reduction radio and precision for large multi-port Resistor-Capacitor-Inductor (RCL) circuits. However, for very wide band frequency transients, the performance of a Krylov subspace-based MOR method is not satisfactory. Moreover, the selection of the expansion point in this method has not been comprehensively studied in the literature. From this point of view, a broadband enhanced structure-preserving reduced-order interconnect macromodeling (SPRIM) method is proposed to reduce the order of equation sets of a transient interconnect circuit model. In addition, a method is introduced to determine the optimal exp... [more]

Keywords: CFD ANSYS, Egyptian climate, solar still, thermal desalination.
With the rising population, environmental pollution, and social development, potable water is reducing and being contaminated day by day continually. Thus, several researchers have focused their studies on seas and oceans in order to get potable fresh water by desalination of their saltwater. Solar still of basin type is one of the available technologies to purify water because of free solar energy. The computational fluid dynamic CFD model of the solar still can significantly improve means for optimization of the solar still structure because it reduces the need for conducting large amount of experiments. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is presenting a multi-phase, three-dimensional CFD model, which predicts the performance of the solar still without using any experimental measurements, depending on the CFD solar radiation model. Simulated results are compared with experimental values of water and glass cover temperatures and yield of fresh water in climate conditions of She... [more]

Keywords: deep coal mine, roadway near goaf, roof cutting and pressure relief, similarity simulation.
Affected by high ground stress, the surrounding rock control of a roadway is one of the most important factors restricting the utilization of deep resources. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a method to improve the stress environment of the deep-buried roadway and reduce its deformation. The article focuses on the 121,302 machine roadway in Kouzidong coal mine to analyze the large deformations of roadways near goafs (RNGs) in deep coal mines and reveal the mechanisms related to pressure relief via roof cutting. Through physical simulation, overburdened structures and the migration laws of RNGs in deep coal mines are studied, and the overburdened RNGs will eventually have a double short-arm “F”-type suspended roof structure. The superposition movement of the structure is the prime cause for the large deformation of the RNGs considered here. Artificial roof cutting can weaken the superposition effect of the double “F” structure and induce the roof to produce a new fracture. Meanwhil... [more]

Keywords: cooling panel, Energy Storage, overheating, passive cooling, PCM, TABS.
The focus of this research paper is to develop a verified simulation model for a cooling panel with integrated phase-change materials (PCMs)—a stainless steel panel filled with PCM and integrated hydronic piping circuit. This solution is targeted for passive cooling of residential buildings in Baltic Sea region that experience overheating for most of the year due to highly insulated building envelopes and extensive glazing—a phenomena for nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs). This approach aims to maintain comfortable indoor temperature all year round by passive means—free-cooling, adiabatic (evaporative) cooling or limited mechanical cooling. The simulations are performed with IDA ICE 4.8 and the measurements for simulation model verification are collected from a test chamber. The results show that reasonable agreement can be reached for simulated and experimentally measured data.
