An Improved Analytical Model for Crosstalk of SiC MOSFET in a Bridge-Arm Configuration
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: analytical model, bridge-arm, crosstalk, SiC MOSFETs.
SiC MOSFETs have an excellent characteristic of high switching speed, which can improve the efficiency and power density of converters significantly. However, the fast switching processes of SiC MOSFETs cause serious crosstalk problems in bridge-arm configurations, which restricts the devices’ performances. This paper presents a detailed and accurate improved crosstalk analytical model, which takes into account the nonlinear capacitances, the parasitic inductances, the reverse recovery characteristics of the anti-parallel diodes, and the nonlinear voltage switching and damping oscillation process. The novelty of the proposed model lies in the fact that under the condition of comprehensively considering all these non-ideal factors of the bridge-arm, the effects of multi-parasitic elements and multi-variables coupling to the crosstalk are hierarchically divided. The parasitic elements and their correlations are described in detail and the direct and indirect variables’ impacts are clearl... [more]

Humidity Distribution in High-Occupancy Indoor Micro-Climates
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD analysis, high occupancy, humidity distribution, internal micro-climate, spatio-temporal distribution.
The general consensus among academics is that the spatio-temporal humidity distribution is more or less uniform in an indoor space. This has, for the large part, not yet been proven by an academic study; subsequently, this paper aims to demonstrate that this is not always true. The paper makes use of a validated transient CFD model, which uses the Low Reynolds Number k-ϵ turbulence model. The model simulates people in a room at a constant skin temperature and emitting a constant source of humidity using source terms in the species equation. The model is eventually used to predict the implications of having a high source of humidity, in the form of occupancy, on the micro-climate’s spatio-temporal humidity distribution. The results for the high-occupancy case show that different locations experience various amounts of humid air, with a 31% difference between the lowest and highest locations. The amount of water vapor in each person’s proximity is deemed to be highly dependent on the flo... [more]

Protection Method Based on Wavelet Entropy for MMC-HVDC Overhead Transmission Lines
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: MMC-HVDC, protection, transient component, wavelet entropy.
Recent technological developments in modular multilevel converter-based high-voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) transmission systems have shown significant advantages over the traditional HVDC and two-level voltage source converter (VSC) transmission systems. However, there are a lack of studies on the protection methods for MMC-HVDC overhead lines where the protection method should be able to provide a fast and accurate response and be able to identify lightning strikes. In this paper, a wavelet entropy-based protection method is proposed. Due to the capability of revealing time−frequency distribution features, the proposed protection method combines wavelet and entropy to identify the time−frequency characteristics of different faults. Simulation results show that the proposed method can accurately and quickly determine the types of faults or disturbances with appropriate noise tolerance. In addition, the impact of the ground resistor and fault distance on the performance of the propo... [more]

Performance Improvement of a Darrieus Tidal Turbine with Active Variable Pitch
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, marine renewable energy, variable pitch, Vertical Axis Tidal Turbine (VATT).
Vertical axis turbines, also called Darrieus turbines, present interesting characteristics for offshore wind and tidal applications but suffer from vibrations and a lower efficiency than the more conventional horizontal axis turbines. The use of variable pitch, in order to control the angle of attack of the blades continuously during their rotation, is considered in this study to overcome these problems. 2D blade-resolved unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) simulations are employed to evaluate the performance improvement that pitching blades can bring to the optimal performance of a three-straight-blade vertical axis tidal turbine. Three pitching laws are defined and tested. They aim to reduce the angle of attack of the blades in the upstream half of the turbine. No pitching motion is used in the downstream half. The streamwise velocity, monitored at the center of the turbine, together with the measurement of the blades’ angle of attack help show the effectiveness of the pr... [more]

Evaluation of Stiffness and Dynamic Properties of a Mine Shaft Steelwork Structure through In Situ Tests and Numerical Simulations
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic analysis, finite element simulation, in situ testing, mine shaft, shaft steelwork, steel structure, underground construction, vertical transport.
A mine shaft steelwork is a three-dimensional frame that directs the vertical motion of conveyances in mine shafts. Here, we conduct field and numerical investigations on the stiffness and dynamic properties of these structures. Based on the design documentation of the shaft, materials data, and site inspection, the steelwork’s finite element model, featuring material and geometric non-linearities, was developed in Abaqus. Static load tests of steelwork were carried out in an underground mine shaft. Numerical simulations reflecting the load test conditions showed strong agreement with the in situ measurements. The validated numerical model was used to assess the dynamic characteristics of the structure. Dynamic linear and non-linear analyses delivered the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and structural response to dynamic loads. The current practices and regulations regarding shaft steelwork design and maintenance do not account for the stiffness of guide-to-bunton connections and dis... [more]

Emission Characteristics for Swirl Methane−Air Premixed Flames with Ammonia Addition
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ammonia, CH4/NH3 flame, NH3 combustion process, NO emission modelling, reactor network, swirl flames.
This paper details the experimental and numerical analysis of a combustion process for atmospheric swirl burners using methane with added ammonia as fuel. The research was carried out for lean methane−air mixtures, which were doped with ammonia up to 5% and preheated up to 473 K. A flow with internal recirculation was induced by burners with different outflow angles from swirling blades, 30° and 50°, where tested equivalence ratio was 0.71. The NO and CO distribution profiles on specified axial positions of the combustor and the overall emission levels at the combustor outlet were measured and compared to a modelled outcome. The highest values of the NO emissions were collected for 5% NH3 and 50° (1950 ppmv), while a reduction to 1585 ppmv was observed at 30°. The doubling of the firing rates from 15 kW up to 30 kW did not have any great influence on the overall emissions. The emission trend lines were not proportional to the raising share of the ammonia in the fuel. 3D numerical tests... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: driving cycle, emissions, fuel consumption, light commercial vehicles, Monte Carlo simulation, wind speed.
A Monte Carlo simulation methodology is suggested in order to assess the impact of ambient wind on a vehicle’s performance and emissions. A large number of random wind profiles is generated by implementing the Weibull and uniform statistical distributions for wind speed and direction, respectively. Wind speed data are drawn from eight cities across Europe. The vehicle considered is a diesel-powered, turbocharged, light-commercial vehicle and the baseline trip is the worldwide harmonized light-duty vehicles WLTC cycle. A detailed engine-mapping approach is used as the basis for the results, complemented with experimentally derived correction coefficients to account for engine transients. The properties of interest are (engine-out) NO and soot emissions, as well as fuel and energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Results from this study show that there is an aggregate increase in all properties, vis-à-vis the reference case (i.e., zero wind), if ambient wind is to be accounted for in road... [more]

Stimulating E-Mobility Diffusion in Germany (EMOSIM): An Agent-Based Simulation Approach
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: agent-based model, e-mobility, innovation diffusion.
The German Climate Action Plan targets an electric vehicle fleet of 6 million by 2030. However, from today’s perspective, we are far away from a path that is steep enough to reach this goal. In order to identify how different policy instruments can stimulate e-mobility diffusion in Germany, we build and calibrate an agent-based simulation model (ABM). The model allows for the consideration of the rich dynamics of social influence as well as the heterogeneity of actors and is flexible enough to be applied with other technologies. We simulate different policy scenarios against a business as usual (BAU) scenario. We show that with the currently implemented set of policies (BAU scenario), it is very unlikely that the envisaged goals in terms of e-mobility diffusion can be reached. Moreover, we suggest additional measures such as a carbon tax on fuel, more charging points, and higher direct subsidies, which are as a combined package likely to have a significantly positive effect on the diff... Interval Load Flow for Uncertainty Consideration in Power Systems Analysis
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: interval load flow, Monte Carlo Simulation, probabilistic load flow, uncertainty.
Modern power systems must deal with a greater degree of uncertainty in power flow calculation due to variations in load and generation introduced by new technologies. This scenario poses new challenges to power system operators which require new tools for an accurate assessment of the system state. This paper presents an interval load flow (ILF) approach for dealing with uncertainty in power system analysis. A probabilistic load flow (PLF), based on Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS), was also implemented for comparative purposes. The ILF and PLF are used to estimate the network states. Both methods were implemented in Python® using the IEEE 34-bus, IEEE 69-bus and 192-bus Brazilian distribution system. The results with the proposed ILF on the aforementioned benchmark test systems proved to be compatible with that of the MCS, evidencing the robustness and applicability of the proposed approach.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), eulerian multiphase, Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS), volume of fluid (VOF), water vortex power plant.
The objective of the present paper is to develop a validated numerical model of a water vortex power plant that serves as a digital twin for further studies such as assessments of the ethohydraulic characteristics or the performance of such devices. The reference for the validation process is a large-scale hydraulic installation equipped with a full-scale water vortex power plant prototype installed in Dresden (Germany), where flow field measurements were carried out using three-dimensional Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry. The numerical model was implemented within the software package Star-CCM+. The unsteady, two-phase flow was solved with the Reynolds-Averaged Navier−Stokes equations in a Eulerian Multiphase approach, deploying a Volume of Fluid method to describe the free-surface flow. Water level and flow velocities were systematically compared in key areas of the device, demonstrating that the simulation is in good agreement with experimental observations. Combined Aggregated Sampling Stochastic Dynamic Programming and Simulation-Optimization to Derive Operation Rules for Large-Scale Hydropower System
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, hydropower, operation rule, sampling stochastic dynamic programming, simulation-optimization.
Simulation-optimization methods are often used to derive operation rules for large-scale hydropower reservoir systems. The solution of the simulation-optimization models is complex and time-consuming, for many interconnected variables need to be optimized, and the objective functions need to be computed through simulation in many periods. Since global solutions are seldom obtained, the initial solutions are important to the solution quality. In this paper, a two-stage method is proposed to derive operation rules for large-scale hydropower systems. In the first stage, the optimal operation model is simplified and solved using sampling stochastic dynamic programming (SSDP). In the second stage, the optimal operation model is solved by using a genetic algorithm, taking the SSDP solution as an individual in the initial population. The proposed method is applied to a hydropower system in Southwest China, composed of cascaded reservoir systems of Hongshui River, Lancang River, and Wu River.... [more]

Application of Computer Graphics Flow Visualization Methods in Vortex Rope Investigations
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, computer graphics, vortex criteria, vortex rope.
Computer graphics visualization techniques for application on data from Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of the vortex rope, a phenomenon present in hydraulic turbines operating in off-design conditions, were devised. This included not only objects for visualization (what to visualize) but also methods of the visualization itself (how to do it). By means of advanced methods based particularly on volume rendering of Eulerian fields in combination with Lagrangian objects, various phenomena were captured, such as the motion of the vortex rope or the backflow zone. The data came from simulations using a scale-resolving hybrid turbulence model, the Stress-Blended Eddy Simulation. In such detailed simulations and other applications involving complex three-dimensional structures, proper visualization methods are needed to leverage the content captured in the resultant data.

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: phase shifting transformer, power system modeling, protection system analysis.
Complex phase shifting transformer protection scheme and complexity of the object itself created a need to use simulation programs for their analysis. Often phase shifting transformer (PST) are modeled as a simplified series impedance and quadrature voltage source which cannot be used for power system protection analysis, especially in a transient condition. Therefore, the procedure of building realistic PST model was presented by using available transformer models with calculation of their parameters including interconnections between units. Paper consist calculations based on case study with symmetrical dual-core PST example. Additionally, theoretical background of PST principle, operation, and their impact of power system protection were introduced with numerus examples of PST model verification.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ceramic coating, mathematical model, solar absorber, vanadium extraction.
The vanadium-titanium black ceramic (VTBC) coating on all-ceramic solar collectors has both high absorptance (0.94) and high emissivity (90%). However, the thermal conductivity of ceramic is very low (1.256 W/mK). To improve the heat collection efficiency of VTBC solar collectors, this paper establishes a mathematical model based on the energy-conservation relationships under steady-state conditions and creates a corresponding computer program. Key parameters for VTBC solar collectors include the heat-removal factor, effective transmittance-absorptance product for the absorber, total heat loss coefficient, etc. Then, via experimental testing, this study proposes a reference model for domestic VTBC solar collectors in a cold location (η = 0.89 − 2.20Tm*). Last, this work analyzes the influences of fin design and transparent cover design on VTBC solar collectors individually, using the created computer program. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: “in situ” assessment, gulf of California, Midriff archipelago, modeling of tidal energy flows.
The Gulf of California has many regions of potential tidal-stream energy that have been identified and characterized using in-situ measurements and numerical ocean models. The Midriff Islands region has received particular attention due to its increased current speeds and high kinetic energy. This increase in energy can be seen in the formation of internal wave packets propagating for several hundred kilometers. Here we present a brief description of internal wave measurements travel towards the Northern Gulf and explore energy generation sites. In this paper we characterize the tidal inflow and outflow that passes throughout the Midriff Islands in the central part of the Gulf. We use a three-dimensional numerical ocean model that adequately reproduces the tidal flow and the increase in speed and kinetic energy between the islands. The current flow structure shows the highest velocity cores near the shore and far from the bottom. During the rising tide, the maximum current flow (~0.6 m... [more]

Hence, this study investigates the operational performance of pure electric-powered loaders matched with three types of motors. Firstly, for the ZL08 loader, it is proposed that a pure electric-powered loader structure adopts two motors to drive the walking and hydraulic systems separately. Secondly, the dynamic parameters of the two motors were matched, and then, a joint vehicle dynamics model of the control system, the Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD) module and the material Discrete Element Method (DEM) module, was established. Finally, the performance of the walking system with three motors was tested by inserting three materials and using accelerating and climbing methods. The operating performance of the hydraulic system was tested by shovelling and unloading three materials. Results show that when inserting difficult materials, the loader’s walking system with switched reluctance motors is 9.74−21.2% deeper th... [more]

Numerical Simulation Analysis of Ag Crystallite Effects on Interface of Front Metal and Silicon in the PERC Solar Cell
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Ag crystallite, numerical simulation analysis, passivated emitter and rear contact solar cell, silicon-metal interface, surface recombination, TCAD.
In the fabrication of crystalline silicon solar cells, the contact properties between the front metal electrode and silicon are one of the most important parameters for achieving high-efficiency, as it is an integral element in the formation of solar cell electrodes. This entails an increase in the surface recombination velocity and a drop in the open-circuit voltage of the solar cell; hence, controlling the recombination velocity at the metal-silicon interface becomes a critical factor in the process. In this study, the distribution of Ag crystallites formed on the silicon-metal interface, the surface recombination velocity in the silicon-metal interface and the resulting changes in the performance of the Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact (PERC) solar cells were analyzed by controlling the firing temperature. The Ag crystallite distribution gradually increased corresponding to a firing temperature increase from 850 ∘C to 950 ∘C. The surface recombination velocity at the silicon-meta... [more]

Calculating the Efficiency of Complex-Shaped Fins
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: complex-shaped fin, continuous fin, fin efficiency, numerical simulation, plate-fin and tube heat exchanger, virtual fin.
Calculation of fin efficiency is necessary for the design of heat exchangers. This efficiency can be calculated for individual finned tubes or continuous fins. Continuous fins are mostly used in plate-fin and tube heat exchangers (PFTHEs). In most cases, the basic elements of those PFTHEs are circular, oval or flattened pipes, which contain circular or polygonal fins. Continuous fins, as can be observed in PFTHEs, are divided into virtual fins. Those fins can have a rectangular shape for an inline arrangement of pipes or a hexagonal shape for a staggered arrangement of pipes. This research shows a methodology of using the finite element method for calculating the efficiency of fins of any shape, placed on pipes of any shape. This paper presents examples of determining the efficiency of seeming fins, which are most commonly used in PFTHEs. In the article, we also compare the precision of calculations of the efficiency of complex-shaped fins using exact analytical methods and approximate... [more]

To Represent Electric Vehicles in Electricity Systems Modelling—Aggregated Vehicle Representation vs. Individual Driving Profiles
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Energy Storage, energy system modelling, method, smart charging, variability management, vehicle-to-grid.
This study describes, applies, and compares three different approaches to integrate electric vehicles (EVs) in a cost-minimising electricity system investment model and a dispatch model. The approaches include both an aggregated vehicle representation and individual driving profiles of passenger EVs. The driving patterns of 426 randomly selected vehicles in Sweden were recorded between 30 and 73 days each and used as input to the electricity system model for the individual driving profiles. The main conclusion is that an aggregated vehicle representation gives similar results as when including individual driving profiles for most scenarios modelled. However, this study also concludes that it is important to represent the heterogeneity of individual driving profiles in electricity system optimisation models when: (i) charging infrastructure is limited to only the home location in regions with a high share of solar and wind power in the electricity system, and (ii) when addressing specia... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: detailed chemistry schemes, heat-loss modeling, jet-and-recirculation stabilized combustion, low-calorific combustion, numerical CFD analysis, OH* measurements, RANS modeling, syngas fuel.
An atmospheric prototype burner is studied with numerical and experimental tools. The burner system is designed for operation in a hybrid power plant for decentralized energy conversion. In order to realize such a coupled system, a reliable combustion system has to be established. Numerical and experimental findings in the presented study demonstrate the capabilities of the novel burner system in suitable operation conditions. In this system, a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is mounted upstream of the burner in the gas turbine system. The combination of both realizes a large operational flexibility with comparably high overall efficiency. Since the combustor is operated with SOFC off-gas, several challenges arise. Low calorific combustion needs careful burner design and numerical modeling, since the heat-loss mechanisms occur to be in the order of magnitude of thermal power output. Thus, different modeling strategies are discussed in the paper. The numerical studies are compared with exp... [more]
