Pore-Scale Simulations of CO2/Oil Flow Behavior in Heterogeneous Porous Media under Various Conditions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CO2-EOR, heterogeneous porous media, immiscible flooding, miscible flooding, pore-scale simulation.
Miscible and near-miscible flooding are used to improve the performance of carbon-dioxide-enhanced oil recovery in heterogeneous porous media. However, knowledge of the effects of heterogeneous pore structure on CO2/oil flow behavior under these two flooding conditions is insufficient. In this study, we construct pore-scale CO2/oil flooding models for various flooding methods and comparatively analyze CO2/oil flow behavior and oil recovery efficiency in heterogeneous porous media. The simulation results indicate that compared to immiscible flooding, near-miscible flooding can increase the CO2 sweep area to some extent, but it is still inefficient to displace oil in small pore throats. For miscible flooding, although CO2 still preferentially displaces oil through big throats, it may subsequently invade small pore throats. In order to substantially increase oil recovery efficiency, miscible flooding is the priority choice; however, the increase of CO2 diffusivity has little effect on oil... [more]

Numerical Study on the Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of a Second Throat Exhaust Diffuser According to Variations in Operating Pressure and Geometric Shape
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: high-altitude simulation, second throat exhaust diffuser, starting pressure, supersonic exhaust diffuser, wall heat flux.
A numerical study was conducted to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a supersonic second throat exhaust diffuser for high-altitude simulations. The numerical results were satisfactorily validated by the experimental results. A subscale diffuser using nitrogen was utilized to investigate starting pressure and pressure variation in the diffuser wall. Based on the validated numerical method, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the diffuser using burnt gas were evaluated by changing operating pressure and geometric shape. During normal diffuser operation without cooling, high-temperature regions of over 3000 K appeared, particularly near the wall and in the diffuser diverging section. After cooling, the flow and pressure distribution characteristics did not differ significantly from those of the adiabatic condition, but the temperature in the subsonic flow section decreased by more than 1000 K. Furthermore, the tendency of the heat flux from the diffuser i... [more]

Modelling Bidding Behaviour on German Photovoltaic Auctions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: auction, optimal bidding, pay-as-bid, renewable, uniform price.
In this article renewable energy support allocation through different types of auctions are assessed. The applied methodological framework is auction theory, based on the rules governing the German photovoltaic (PV) Feed-in Premium (FIP) auctions. The work focuses on bidding strategies based on an extended levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) methodology, comparing two different set of rules: uniform price and pay-as-bid. When calculating the optimal bids an iteration is developed to find the Nash-equilibrium optimal bidding strategy. When searching for the bid function, not only strictly monotone functions, but also monotone functions are considered, extending the framework typically applied in auction theory modelling. The results suggest that the PV support allocation in the German auction system would be more cost efficient using the uniform pricing rule, since many participants bid above their true valuation in the pay-as-bid auction Nash-equilibrium. Thus from a cost minimising p... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: automation, BISON, EBR-II, finite element methods, metallic fuel, Simulation.
BISON finite element method fuel performance simulations were conducted using an existing automated process that couples the Fuels Irradiation & Physics Database (FIPD) and the Integral Fast Reactor Materials Information System database by writing input files and comparing the BISON output to post-irradiation fuel pin profilometry measurements contained within the databases. The importance of this work is to demonstrate the ability to benchmark fuel performance metallic fuel models within BISON using Experimental Breeder Reactor-II fuel pin data for a number of similar pins, while building off previous modeling efforts. Changes to the generic BISON input file include implementing pin specific axial power and flux profiles, pin specific fluences, frictional contact, and irradiation-induced volumetric swelling models for cladding. Quasi-Z-Source Inverter-Based Photovoltaic Power System Modeling for Grid Stability Studies
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: photovoltaics, quasi-Z-source inverter, small-signal model, state-space model.
Quasi-Z-source inverters (qZSIs) are becoming a powerful power conversion technology in photovoltaic (PV) power systems because they allow energy power conversion in a single stage operation. However, they can cause system resonances and reduce system damping, which may lead to instabilities. These stability problems are well known in grid-connected voltage source converter systems but not in quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI)-based PV power systems. This paper contributes with Matlab/Simulink and PSCAD/EMTDC models of qZSI-based PV power systems to analyze transient interactions and stability problems. These models consider all power circuits and control blocks of qZSI-based PV power systems and can be used in sensitivity studies on the influence of system parameters on stability. PV power system stability is assessed from the proposed models. The causes of instabilities are analyzed from numerical simulations and possible solutions are proposed.

Modeling and Dynamic Simulation of a Hybrid Liquid Desiccant System with Non-Adiabatic Falling-Film Air-Solution Contactors for Air Conditioning Applications in Buildings
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air conditioning, Dynamic Modelling, experimental validation, falling film air-solution contactor, hybrid liquid desiccant system, multi-objective optimization.
This paper presents an experimentally validated, dynamic model of a hybrid liquid desiccant system. For this purpose, we developed new components for the air-solution contactors, which are of the non-adiabatic falling-film type with horizontal tubes (made of improved polypropylene) and the solution tanks. We also provide new experimental correlations for both the tube-solution heat transfer coefficient and the mass transfer coefficient on the airside as a function of the air velocity. To validate the model, the results obtained from the dynamic simulations were compared with those obtained by monitoring a demonstration unit installed in a sports center in Taipei (Taiwan). Once validated, the model was used to perform a sensitivity analysis at different operational conditions, such as the inlet water temperatures in the air-solution contactors and the LiCl mass fraction at which the system operates. The results of the sensitivity analysis were used to optimize the seasonal performance i... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: continuous production, microalgae, Microchloropsis salina, open photobioreactors, process simulation, thin-layer cascade.
Studies on microalgal lipid production as a sustainable feedstock for biofuels and chemicals are scarce, particularly those on applying open thin-layer cascade (TLC) photobioreactors under dynamic diurnal conditions. Continuous lipid production with Microchloropsis salina was studied in scalable TLC photobioreactors at 50 m2 pilot scale, applying a physically simulated Mediterranean summer climate. A cascade of two serially connected TLC reactors was applied, promoting biomass growth under nutrient-replete conditions in the first reactor, while inducing the accumulation of lipids via nitrogen limitation in the second reactor. Up to 4.1 g L−1 of lipids were continuously produced at productivities of up to 0.27 g L−1 d−1 (1.8 g m2 d−1) at a mean hydraulic residence time of 2.5 d in the first reactor and 20 d in the second reactor. Coupling mass balances with the kinetics of microalgal growth and lipid formation enabled the simulation of phototrophic process performances of M. salina in T... [more]

Method of Estimating Uncertainty as a Way to Evaluate Continuity Quality of Power Supply in Hospital Devices
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: hospital, reliability, supply system, system quality.
The article presents issues related to the determination of the continuity quality of power supply (CQoPS) for hospital electrical devices. The model describing CQoPS takes into account power redundancy. The uncertainty modeling method based on the certainty factor (CF) of the hypothesis was used to establish the single-valued CQoPS factor. CQoPS modeling takes into account multidimensional quality models and physical stages of power. The quality models take into account seven dimensions that make up CQoPS (availability, appropriate amount, power supply reliability, power quality, assurance, responsiveness, security). The model of power stages includes five of these stages (power generation, delivery to recipient, distribution by recipient, delivery to device, power-consuming device). To date, when designing hospital power systems, the applied reliability indicators revealed limitations because they do not consider all the possible factors influencing the power continuity. Modeling on Effect of Particle Sediment on Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer of Solid−Fluid Suspension
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: heat transfer, non-Newtonian fluid, particle flux, particles transport, solid–fluid suspension.
A two-way coupling particle flux model is proposed for studying the multi-component solid−fluid suspension. The suspension mixture is treated as a non-linear single-phase fluid and the migration of the solid particles is modeled by a particle flux equation. The proposed particle flux model takes the effects of the particle migration on the transport of the suspension’s momentum and internal energy into account. Two benchmark problems are calculated to study the performance of the proposed particle flux model, i.e., flow in a sudden expansion straight channel and flow between two rotating cylinders. It is found that the particle flux model converges without numerical stability issue with the commonly used PISO-SIMPLE transient solver, and the effect of the particle migration is evident on both velocity profile and temperature distribution.

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: desalination, design optimization, double slope solar still, Modelling, sensitivity analysis, solar thermal energy.
This study presents a novel, highly detailed, and accurate modelling method for calculation of the total annual solar thermal energy received by a double-slope solar still. The model is further utilized for sensitivity analysis and optimization with the help of Genetic Algorithm and TOPSIS methods. The model reveals that the main parameters that can independently affect solar energy input are the basin length, width, tilt angle, surface azimuth angle, and the glass covers’ inclination angle. The sensitivity of the annual solar energy input to all these parameters is analyzed. Moreover, all the parameters are chosen to be involved in the optimization problem. Sensitivity analysis results show that except for basin azimuth angle all other parameters significantly affect the amount of energy input to the solar still. Genetic Algorithm identified 60 optimum sets of parameters, one of which was selected by the TOPSIS method. The optimum values for the basin width, length, tilt and azimuth a... [more]

An Innovative Technology for Monitoring the Distribution of Abutment Stress in Longwall Mining
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: field measurement, fracturing roofs to maintain entry (FRME), numerical simulation, side abutment pressure, strata movement.
Fracturing roofs to maintain entry (FRME) is a novel longwall mining method, which has been widely used in China, leading a new mining revolution. In order to research the change law of side abutment pressure and movement law of overlying strata when using the FRME, a new abutment pressure monitoring device, namely, the flexible detection unit (FDU), is developed and is applied in the field. The monitoring results show that compared with the head entry (also called the non-splitting entry), the peak value of the lateral abutment pressure in the tail entry (also termed the splitting entry) is reduced by 17.2% on average, and the fluctuation degree becomes smaller. Then, finite difference software FLAC3D is used to simulate the stress change of the solid coal on both sides of the panel. The simulation results show that the side abutment pressure of the tail entry decreases obviously, which is consistent with the measured results. Comprehensive analysis points out that after splitting and... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, EGPs, external gear pumps, flow non-uniformity, flow ripple, fluid-borne noise, lumped parameter numerical simulation.
In this paper, an innovative solution to minimize noise emission, acting on the flow ripple, in a prototype External Gear Pump (EGP) is presented. Firstly, a new tool capable to completely simulate this pump’s typologies, called EgeMATor, is presented; the hydraulic model, adopted for the simulation, is based on a lumped parameter method using a control volume approach. Starting from the pump drawing, thanks to different subroutines developed in different environments interconnected, it is possible to analyze an EGP. Results have been compared with the outputs of a three-dimensional CFD numerical model built up using a commercial code, already used with success by the authors. In the second section, an innovative solution to reduce the flow ripple is implemented. This technology is called Alternative Capacitive Volumes (ACV) and works by controlling and uniformizing the reverse flow, performing a consistent reduction of flow non-uniformity amplitude. Effect of Pebble Size Distribution and Wall Effect on Inner Packing Structure and Contact Force Distribution in Tritium Breeder Pebble Bed
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: breeding blanket, contact force, discrete element method, packing structure, porosity distribution, tritium breeder pebble bed.
In the tritium breeding blanket of nuclear fusion reactors, the heat transfer behavior and thermal-mechanical response of the tritium breeder pebble bed are affected by the inner packing structure, which is crucial for the design and optimization of a reliable pebble bed in tritium breeding blanket. Thus, the effect of pebble size distribution and fixed wall effect on packing structure and contact force in the poly-disperse pebble bed were investigated by numerical simulation. The results show that pebble size distribution has a significant influence on the inner packing structure of pebble bed. With the increase of the dispersion of pebble size, the average porosity and the average coordination number of the poly-disperse pebble bed gradually decrease. Due to the influence of the fixed wall, the porosity distribution of the pebble bed shows an obvious wall effect. For poly-disperse pebble bed, the influenced region of the wall effect gradually decreases with the increase of the disper... [more]

A Minimalistic Prediction Model to Determine Energy Production and Costs of Offshore Wind Farms
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cost modeling, levelized cost of energy, offshore wind farms, resource assessment.
A numerical framework for determining the available wind power and associated costs related to the development of large-scale offshore wind farms is presented. The idea is to develop a fast and robust minimal prediction model, which with a limited number of easy accessible input variables can determine the annual energy output and associated costs for a specified offshore wind farm. The utilized approach combines an energy production model for offshore-located wind farms with an associated cost model that only demands global input parameters, such as wind turbine rotor diameter, nameplate capacity, area of the wind farm, number of turbines, water depth, and mean wind speed Weibull parameters for the site. The cost model includes expressions for the most essential wind farm cost elements—such as costs of wind turbines, support structures, cables and electrical substations, as well as costs of operation and maintenance—as function of rotor size, interspatial distance between the wind tur... Coupled Thermo−Hydro−Mechanical−Seismic Modeling of EGS Collab Experiment 1
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: fracture flow, fracture network propagation, induced seismicity, poroelastic deformation.
An important technical issue in the enhanced geothermal system (EGS) is the process of fracture shear and dilation, fracture network propagation and induced seismicity. EGS development requires an ability to reliably predict the fracture network’s permeability evolution. Laboratory and field studies such as EGS Collab and Utah FORGE, and modeling simulations provide valuable lessons for successful commercial EGS design. In this work we present a modeling analysis of EGS Collab Testbed Experiment 1 (May 24, Stim-II ≅ 164 Notch) and interpret the stimulation results in relation to the creation of a fracture network. In doing so, we use an improved 3D discrete fracture network model coupled with a 3D thermo-poroelastic finite element model (FEM) which can consider fracture network evolution and induced seismicity. A dual-scale semi-deterministic fracture network is generated by combining data from image logs, foliations/micro-fractures, and core. The natural fracture properties (e.g., len... [more]

Dynamics of Switched Reluctance Linear Tubular Motor for Reciprocating Water Pump
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: FEM modeling, integrated motor–water pump aggregate, linear tubular motors, motor dynamics analysis, sustainable watering, switched reluctance motors.
Simple, cheap, and efficient water pumps are needed in developing countries. A reciprocating water pump driven by a switched reluctance linear tubular motor with double pistons that can be supplied from a photovoltaic power source seems to respond to this demand. This type of new motor (one with reciprocating motion) is presented in the paper. In order to develop a strong driving force at two extreme piston positions and achieve a long piston stroke, a double coil motor with a double secondary and two springs is proposed. Simulation results of force, current, and voltage waveforms obtained using MATLAB/Simulink are presented. The electromagnetic forces and coil inductances, which depended on the current and the secondary positions of the pistons, were determined using FEM. Simulation results are compared with those obtained from an experiment carried out on the motor prototype.

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, iodine-sulfur cycle, species transport, structural design.
The heat generated in a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor can be used to drive the iodine-sulfur cycle to produce hydrogen. However, the sulfuric acid decomposition step requires a sophisticated sulfuric acid decomposer to increase the decomposition rate. The decomposition of sulfuric acid mainly occurs in the catalytic zone, and the optimization of its structure is very important for increasing the decomposition rate. This study focuses on the structural design of the catalytic zone of the sulfuric acid decomposer unit. The structure with double inner tubes is designed to analyze the influence of the inner tube heat transfer area and the catalytic volume of the annulus region on the decomposition rate. The species transport model is used to predict the proportion of products followed by analysis of the key factors affecting the decomposition rate of the catalytic domain. The results reveal that the new design attains the decomposition temperature requirements and increases the fluid... [more]

This paper develops a reliable deep-learning framework to extract latent features from spatial properties and investigates adaptive surrogate estimation to sequester CO2 into heterogeneous deep saline aquifers. Our deep-learning architecture includes a deep convolutional autoencoder (DCAE) and a fully-convolutional network to not only reduce computational costs but also to extract dimensionality-reduced features to conserve spatial characteristics. Simultaneous Synergy in CH4 Yield and Kinetics: Criteria for Selecting the Best Mixtures during Co-Digestion of Wastewater and Manure from a Bovine Slaughterhouse
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: anaerobic co-digestion, biodegradability, kinetic modeling, slaughterhouse wastewater, synergistic effects.
Usually, slaughterhouse wastewater has been considered as a single substrate whose anaerobic digestion can lead to inhibition problems and low biodegradability. However, the bovine slaughter process generates different wastewater streams with particular physicochemical characteristics: slaughter wastewater (SWW), offal wastewater (OWW) and paunch wastewater (PWW). Therefore, this research aims to assess the anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of SWW, OWW, PWW and bovine manure (BM) through biochemical methane potential tests in order to reduce inhibition risk and increase biodegradability. A model-based methodology was developed to assess the synergistic effects considering CH4 yield and kinetics simultaneously. The AcoD of PWW and BM with OWW and SWW enhanced the extent of degradation (0.64−0.77) above both PWW (0.34) and BM (0.46) mono-digestion. SWW Mono-digestion showed inhibition risk by NH3, which was reduced by AcoD with PWW and OWW. The combination of low CH4 potential streams (PWW a... [more]

Effect of Helix Angle on the Performance of Helical Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, helical blade, vertical axis wind turbine, wind energy.
The energy crisis has forced researchers to look for various non-conventional energy sources. Wind energy is one of the potential sources, and researchers have invested resources in developing different kinds of wind turbines. Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) have received less attention than their horizontal-axis counterparts. A helical-bladed VAWT is preferred because it makes perfect sense as an improvement in design, as they have higher azimuth angles of power generation capabilities. This paper studies the effects of the helix angle of blades in the aerodynamic performance of VAWT using 3D numerical simulations. Three different helix angles of 60°, 90°, and 120° of a three-bladed VAWT operating across different tip speed ratios were studied. Turbulence is modelled using a four-equation transition SST k-ω model (shear stress transport). The 60° helical-bladed VAWT was found to be better performing in comparison with all other helical-bladed and straight-bladed VAWT. The ripple ef... [more]

A Multivariate High-Order Markov Model for the Income Estimation of a Wind Farm
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electricity price, mixture transition distribution, multivariate Markov chain, wind farm performance.
The energy produced by a wind farm in a given location and its associated income depends both on the wind characteristics in that location—i.e., speed and direction—and the dynamics of the electricity spot price. Because of the evidence of cross-correlations between wind speed, direction and price series and their lagged series, we aim to assess the income of a hypothetical wind farm located in central Italy when all interactions are considered. To model these cross and auto-correlations efficiently, we apply a high-order multivariate Markov model which includes dependencies from each time series and from a certain level of past values. Besides this, we used the Raftery Mixture Transition Distribution model (MTD) to reduce the number of parameters to get a more parsimonious model. Using data from the MERRA-2 project and from the electricity market in Italy, we estimate the model parameters and validate them through a Monte Carlo simulation. Modelling of an Existing Neutral Temperature District Heating Network: Detailed and Approximate Approaches
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: district heating and cooling, energy modelling, ground source, heat pumps, waste heat.
This paper deals with the modelling of an existing neutral-temperature district heating network, meaning that the distribution temperature is close to the ambient temperature, with decentralised heat pumps. The considered case is located in Ospitaletto, Italy. Heat sources are given by industrial waste heat at about 25 °C and aquifer wells at about 15 °C. Two models are used to analyse the network: a detailed model able to calculate local values of operating parameters and an approximate model focused on energy balances aggregating all users with a lumped demand. Both models include the behaviour of heat pumps, a feature not available in other district heating modelling tools. An entire year of operation is considered, with an hourly time resolution. Load profiles are provided as inputs, while the main outputs consist of energy balances and primary energy consumptions. The corresponding results are compared, showing a reasonable agreement, where the approximate model underestimates the... [more]
