Parasitic Loop Inductances Reduction in the PCB Layout in GaN-Based Power Converters Using S-Parameters and EM Simulations
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: commutation loop inductance, EM modeling, EMI, GaN converter, PCB layout, S-parameter.
Due to the high switching speed of Gallium Nitride (GaN) transistors, parasitic inductances have significant impacts on power losses and electromagnetic interferences (EMI) in GaN-based power converters. Thus, the proper design of high-frequency converters in a simulation tool requires accurate electromagnetic (EM) modeling of the commutation loops. This work proposes an EM modeling of the parasitic inductance of a GaN-based commutation cell on a printed circuit board (PCB) using Advanced Design System (ADS®) software. Two different PCB designs of the commutation loop, lateral (single-sided) and vertical (double-sided) are characterized in terms of parasitic inductance contribution. An experimental approach based on S-parameters, the Cold FET technique and a specific calibration procedure is developed to obtain reference values for comparison with the proposed models. First, lateral and vertical PCB loop inductances are extracted. Then, the whole commutation loop inductances including... [more]

High Performance Electric Vehicle Powertrain Modeling, Simulation and Validation
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: chassis dynamometer, drive cycle, electric vehicle, Modelling.
Accurate electric vehicle (EV) powertrain modeling, simulation and validation is paramount for critical design and control decisions in high performance vehicle designs. Described in this paper is a methodology for the design and development of EV powertrain through modeling, simulation and validation on a real-world vehicle system with detailed analysis of the results. Although simulation of EV powertrains in software simulation environments plays a significant role in the design and development of EVs, validating these models on the real-world vehicle systems plays an equally important role in improving the overall vehicle reliability, safety and performance. This modeling approach leverages the use of MATLAB/Simulink software for the modeling and simulation of an EV powertrain, augmented by simultaneously validating the modeling results on a real-world vehicle which is performance tested on a chassis dynamometer. The combination of these modeling techniques and real-world validation... [more]

Mathematical Analysis of Line Intersection and Shortest Distance Algorithms
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: localization, location detection technology (LDT), three circle intersection, time of arrival (TOA), trilateration.
The time of arrival (TOA) trilateration is one of the representative location detection technologies (LDT) that determines the true location of a mobile station (MS) using a unique intersection point of three circles based on three radii corresponding to distances between MS and base stations (BSs) and center coordinates of BSs. Since the distance between MS and BS is estimated by using the number of time delays, three circles based on the estimated radii are generally increased and they may not meet at a single point, resulting in the location estimation error. In order to compensate this estimation error and to improve estimation performance, we present two advanced TOA trilateration localization algorithms with detail mathematical expressions. The considered algorithms are the shortest distance algorithm, which calculates an average of three interior intersection points among an entire six intersection points from three intersecting circles, and the line intersection algorithm, whic... Pyrolysis of Municipal Sewage Sludge to Investigate Char and Phosphorous Yield together with Heavy-Metal Removal—Experimental and by Thermodynamic Calculations
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: chemical fractionation, phosphorus recovery, pyrolysis, sewage sludge, thermodynamic equilibrium modeling.
Sewage sludge is regarded as a potential source for soil fertilizer However, the direct utilization of sewage sludge in agricultural land is restricted since it also contains heavy metals, pathogens, and toxic compounds. Pyrolysis of the sewage sludge destroys the organic pollutants and partly volatilizes the heavy metals. In this study, pyrolysis of sewage sludge was carried out in order to determine the optimum residence time and temperature to recover the phosphorous and remove heavy metals from the resultant sewage sludge char (SSC). Pyrolysis was conducted on dried sewage sludge (DSS) by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and high-temperature oven with an N2-atmosphere. Microwave Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (MP-AES) was used to determine the concentration of P and trace elements in the resulting solid char fraction. A combination of chemical fractionation (step-by-step leaching) of the DSS and thermodynamic equilibrium calculations were utilized to estimate the avai... [more]

Analysis of the Head of a Simulation Crash Test Dummy with Speed Motion
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: computer simulation, crash test, dummy.
The article presents a model of an anthropometric dummy designed for low velocity crash tests, designed in ADAMS. The model consists of rigid bodies connected with special joints with appropriately selected stiffness and damping. The simulation dummy has the appropriate dimensions, shape, and mass of individual elements to suit a 50 percentile male. The purpose of this article is to draw attention to low speed crash tests. Current dummies such as THOR and Hybrid III are used for crash tests at speeds above 40 km/h. In contrast, the low-speed test dummy currently used is the BioRID-II dummy, which is mainly adapted to the whiplash test at speeds of up to 16km/h. Thus, it can be seen that there is a gap in the use of crash test dummies. There are no low-speed dummies for side and front crash tests, and there are no dummies for rear crash tests between 16 km/h and 25 km/h. Which corresponds to a collision of a passenger vehicle with a hard obstacle at a speed of 30 km/h. Therefore, in col... [more]

Fault Sealing Evaluation of a Strike-Slip Fault Based on Normal Stress: A Case Study from Eastern Junggar Basin, NW China
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: displacement pressure, normal stress of fault plane, numerical simulation of stress, sealing of faults, strike slip fault.
The sealing of a fault zone has been a focus for geological studies in the past decades. The majority of previous studies have focused on the extensional regimes, where the displacement pressure difference between fault rock and reservoir was used to evaluate the fault-sealing property from the basic principle of fault sealing. When considering the displacement pressure difference, the impact of gravity on the fault rock was considered, whereas the impact of horizontal stress was ignored. In this study, we utilize the displacement pressure difference as an index to evaluate the sealing capacity of strike-slip faults, in which both the impacts of gravity and horizontal stress on the fault rocks are all integrated. By calculating the values of σH/σV and σh/σV in the vicinity of fault planes, the coefficient K of compaction impacts on fault rocks between normal stress to fault planes and gravity was then determined. By revealing the quantitative relationship between the displacement press... [more]

Development and Validation of a Machine Learned Turbulence Model
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: DNS, Machine Learning, turbulence modeling.
A stand-alone machine learned turbulence model is developed and applied for the solution of steady and unsteady boundary layer equations, and issues and constraints associated with the model are investigated. The results demonstrate that an accurately trained machine learned model can provide grid convergent, smooth solutions, work in extrapolation mode, and converge to a correct solution from ill-posed flow conditions. The accuracy of the machine learned response surface depends on the choice of flow variables, and training approach to minimize the overlap in the datasets. For the former, grouping flow variables into a problem relevant parameter for input features is desirable. For the latter, incorporation of physics-based constraints during training is helpful. Data clustering is also identified to be a useful tool as it avoids skewness of the model towards a dominant flow feature.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electric machine, electric motor, Model Order Reduction (ROM), Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD), real-time simulation, reduced-order model, virtual chart.
A novel Model Order Reduction (MOR) technique is developed to compute high-dimensional parametric solutions for electromagnetic fields in synchronous machines. Specifically, the intrusive version of the Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD) is employed to simulate a Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). The result is a virtual chart allowing real-time evaluation of the magnetic vector potential as a function of the operation point of the motor, or even as a function of constructive parameters, such as the remanent flux in permanent magnets. Currently, these solutions are highly demanded by the industry, especially with the recent developments in the Electric Vehicle (EV). In this framework, standard discretization techniques require highly time-consuming simulations when analyzing, for instance, the noise and vibration in electric motors. The proposed approach is able to construct a virtual chart within a few minutes of off-line simulation, thanks to the use of a fully separated... [more]

Optimization of Thermal Backfill Configurations for Desired High-Voltage Power Cables Ampacity
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ampacity, economic optimization, high-voltage power cables, Modelling.
The ampacity of high-voltage power cables depends, among others, on their core cross-sectional area as well as thermal resistivity of the thermal backfill surrounding the cables. The cross-sectional area of the power cables’ core is selected according to the expected power to be transferred via the cable system. Usually, the higher the power transfer required, the higher the cross-sectional area of the core. However, the cost of high-voltage power cables is relatively high and strictly depends on the dimensions of the core. Therefore, from the economic point of view, it is interesting to focus on the improvement of the thermal condition around the cables, by changing the dimension of the thermal backfill, instead of increasing the power cables’ core cross-sectional area. In practice, it is important to find the optimal dimensions of both cable core and thermal backfill to achieve the economically attractive solution of the power cable transfer system. A CFD-Based Optimization of Building Configuration for Urban Ventilation Potential
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building configuration, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), genetic algorithm (GA), urban ventilation.
In this paper, we present a performance-based approach to building configuration design to improve the urban ventilation potential at the conceptual design stage, and we demonstrate its application through a case study. The target performance optimized was the ventilation potential of a district, including a region of interest at a spatial scale of hundreds of meters. To estimate this performance, we used computational fluid dynamics (CFD), coupled with an evolutionary algorithm, to optimize the design alternatives to produce the building configuration most suitable for a given set of site conditions. Three calculation components must be assembled for a CFD-based design optimization: an optimizer, a geometry/mesh generator, and a CFD solver. To provide links between the calculation components, we utilized an in-house parametric design program. A case study was conducted to test the applicability of the proposed design method to identify the optimal solutions that minimize adverse effec... [more]

Numerical Simulations of Cryogenic Hydrogen Cooling in Vortex Tubes with Smooth Transitions
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, cryogenics, hydrogen systems, vortex tubes.
Improving efficiency of hydrogen cooling in cryogenic conditions is important for the wider applications of hydrogen energy systems. The approach investigated in this study is based on a Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube (RHVT) that generates temperature separation in a working fluid. The simplicity of RHVT is also a valuable characteristic for cryogenic systems. In the present work, novel shapes of RHVT are computationally investigated with the goal to raise efficiency of the cooling process. Specifically, a smooth transition is arranged between a vortex chamber, where compressed gas is injected, and the main tube with two exit ports at the tube ends. Flow simulations have been carried out using STAR-CCM+ software with the real-gas Redlich-Kwong model for hydrogen at temperatures near 70 K. It is determined that a vortex tube with a smooth transition of moderate size manifests about 7% improvement of the cooling efficiency when compared vortex tubes that use traditional vortex chambers with s... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy system model, hydro power, nordic system, open-source model.
In this paper, we present the results from the development and the simulation of a hydro power model for Sweden and Norway, using SpineOpt software and openly available data. We employ (i) hydrological and market data from the Nordic region and (ii) the abstract representation of the multi-vector modelling and simulation engine SpineOpt, to compile an open-source model of a large portion of the hydro power plants of the Nordic region, for conducting realistic hydro power generation studies. We place the hydro power system operation within the structuring of the Nordic electricity market and study the effect that different objectives have on the operational results. By employing the SpineOpt functionalities for automating the transformation of the temporal resolution of the model, we explore the trade-of between its computational burden and accuracy.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ANSYS coupled analysis, design methods, FEM, fuse links, low voltage fuses, modeling and simulation, transient thermal analysis.
In this paper, a detailed three-dimensional, transient, finite element method of fuse link NH000 gG 100 A is proposed. The thermal properties during the operation of the fuses under nominal (100 A) and custom conditions (110 and 120 A) are the main focus of the analyses that were conducted. The work concerns both the outside elements of the fuse link (ceramic body) and the elements inside (current circuit). Both the distribution of the electric current and its impact on the temperature of the construction parts of the fuses during their operating mode have been described. Temperature distribution, power losses and energy dissipation were measured using a numerical model. In order to verify and validate the model, two independent teams of scientists executed experimental research, during which the temperature was measured on different parts of the device involving the rated current. Finally, the two sets of results were put together and compared with those obtained from the simulation t... [more]

Biomass and Lipid Productivity by Two Algal Strains of Chlorella sorokiniana Grown in Hydrolysate of Water Hyacinth
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: biomass productivity, Chlorella sorokiniana, FAME (fatty acid methyl esters), hydrolysate, lipid, nutrient amended media.
Hydrolysate prepared from the chemical hydrolysis of water hyacinth biomass contains a high amount of solubilised carbohydrate and nutrients. This hydrolysate was utilised as a medium for the cultivation of two strains of Chlorella sorokiniana, isolated from a municipal wastewater treatment plant using two different media, i.e., BG-11 and Knop’s medium. Different light intensities, light−dark cycles, and various concentrations of external carbon sources (monosaccharides and inorganic carbon) were used to optimise the microalgal growth. For the accumulation of lipids and carbohydrates, the microalgal strains were transferred to nutrient amended medium (N-amended and P-amended). It was observed that the combined effect of glucose, inorganic carbon, and a 12:12 h light−dark cycle proved to be the optimum parameters for high biomass productivity (~200 mg/L/day). For Chlorella sorokiniana 1 (isolated from BG-11 medium), the maximum carbohydrate content (22%) was found in P-amended medium (N... [more]

Simplified Transition and Turbulence Modeling for Oscillatory Pipe Flows
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: pipe flow, pulse-tube cryogenic coolers, turbulence modeling, unsteady turbulent flow, Womersley number.
One-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes computations were performed for oscillatory transitional and turbulent pipe flows and the results were validated against existing experimental data for a wide variety of oscillatory Reynolds and Womersley numbers. An unsteady version of the Johnson−King model was implemented with optional near-wall modification to account for temporal pressure gradient variations, and the predictions were compared with those of the Spalart−Allmaras and k−ε turbulence models. Transition and relaminarization were based on empirical Womersley number correlations and assumed to occur instantaneously: in the former case, this assumption was valid, but in the latter case, deviations between data and predictions were observed. In flows where the oscillatory Reynolds numbers are substantially higher than the commonly accepted steady critical value (~2000), fully or continuously turbulent models produced the best correspondence with experimental data. Pore-Scale Modelling of Solvent-Based Recovery Processes
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: non-equilibrium phase behavior, pore-scale simulation, solvent-based recovery processes, VAPEX.
A need for a reduction in energy intensity and greenhouse gas emissions of bitumen and heavy oil recovery processes has led to the invention of several methods where mass-transfer-based recovery processes in terms of cold or heated solvent injection are used to reduce bitumen viscosity rather than steam injection. Despite the extensive numerical and experimental investigations, the field results are not always aligned to what is predicted unless several history matches are done. These discrepancies can be explained by investigating the mechanisms involved in mass transfer and corresponding viscosity reduction at the pore level. A two-phase multicomponent pore-scale simulator is developed to be used for realistic porous media simulation. The simulator developed predicts the chamber front velocity and chamber propagation in agreement with 2D experimental data in the literature. The simulator is specifically used for vapor extraction (VAPEX) modelling in a 2D porous medium. It was found t... [more]

Evaluation and Optimization of a Two-Phase Liquid-Immersion Cooling System for Data Centers
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
An efficient cooling system for data centers can boost the working efficiency of servers and promote energy savings. In this study, a laboratory experiment and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation were performed to explore the performance of a two-phase cooling system. The coefficient of performance (COP) and partial power usage effectiveness (pPUE) of the proposed system was evaluated under various IT (Information Technology) loads. The relationship between the interval of the two submerged servers and their surface temperatures was evaluated by CFD analysis, and the minimum intervals that could maintain the temperature of the server surfaces below 85 °C were obtained. Experimental results show that as server power increases, COP increases pPUE decreases. In one experiment, the COP increased from 19.0 to 26.7, whereas pPUE decreased from 1.053 to 1.037. The exergy efficiency of this system ranges from 12.65% to 18.96%, and the tank side accounts for most of the exergy destruc... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, estimator, LSTM, neural network, soot concentration, transient diffusion flame.
Particulate matter (soot) emissions from combustion processes have damaging health and environmental effects. Numerical techniques with varying levels of accuracy and computational time have been developed to model soot formation in flames. High-fidelity soot models come with a significant computational cost and as a result, accurate soot modelling becomes numerically prohibitive for simulations of industrial combustion devices. In the present study, an accurate and computationally inexpensive soot-estimating tool has been developed using a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network. The LSTM network is used to estimate the soot volume fraction (fv) in a time-varying, laminar, ethylene/air coflow diffusion flame with 20 Hz periodic fluctuation on the fuel velocity and a 50% amplitude of modulation. The LSTM neural network is trained using data from CFD, where the network inputs are gas properties that are known to impact soot formation (such as temperature) and the network output is... [more]

Reduced-Order Modelling with Domain Decomposition Applied to Multi-Group Neutron Transport
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: domain decomposition, Model Reduction, neutron diffusion equation, reactor physics, reduced-order modelling.
Solving the neutron transport equations is a demanding computational challenge. This paper combines reduced-order modelling with domain decomposition to develop an approach that can tackle such problems. The idea is to decompose the domain of a reactor, form basis functions locally in each sub-domain and construct a reduced-order model from this. Several different ways of constructing the basis functions for local sub-domains are proposed, and a comparison is given with a reduced-order model that is formed globally. A relatively simple one-dimensional slab reactor provides a test case with which to investigate the capabilities of the proposed methods. The results show that domain decomposition reduced-order model methods perform comparably with the global reduced-order model when the total number of reduced variables in the system is the same with the potential for the offline computational cost to be significantly less expensive.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bioreactors, carbon monoxide, composting, emission modeling, employees safety, occupational health and safety.
Advanced technologies call for composting indoors for minimized impact on the surrounding environment. However, enclosing compost piles inside halls may cause the accumulation of toxic pollutants, including carbon monoxide (CO). Thus, there is a need to assess the occupational risk to workers that can be exposed to CO concentrations > 300 ppm at the initial stage of the process. The objectives were to (1) develop a model of CO accumulation in the headspace of the bioreactor during organic waste composting and (2) assess the impact of headspace ventilation of enclosed compost. The maximum allowable CO level inside the bioreactor headspace for potential short-term occupational exposure up to 10 min was 100 ppm. The composting was modeled in the horizontal static reactor over 14 days in seven scenarios, differing in the ratio of headspace-to-waste volumes (H:W) (4:1, 3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4). Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: actuation circuit, CFD-1D, Gerotor pump, hydraulic resonance, order tracking, pressure oscillation.
The paper investigates hydraulic wave propagation phenomena through hydraulic circuits of power transmission systems by means of numerical approaches. The actuation circuit of a Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) power transmission system supplied by a Gerotor pump is analyzed. A steady state approach is adopted to detect resonance phenomena due to Gerotor design parameters and circuit lengths, while one-dimensional numerical models are implemented to predict the pressure oscillations through the hydraulic ducts for the whole pump operating domain. CFD-1D pipelines are adopted to address the pressure oscillation behavior through the hydraulic pipeline, while spectral maps and order tracking techniques are used to evaluate their fluctuation intensity in function of the pump speed rate. The numerical models are validated with experimental tests performed on an ad hoc test rig for power transmission systems and a good match is found between the numerical and the experimental results. A CFD Study on Flow Control of Ammonia Injection for Denitrification Processes of SCR Systems in Coal-Fired Power Plants
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ammonia injection, ammonia injection, denitrification, flow control, molar ratio, numerical analysis.
The selective catalytic reduction method is a useful method for the denitrification process of exhaust gas emitted from industrial facilities. The distribution of the ammonia−nitrogen oxide mixing ratio at the inlet of the catalyst layers is important in the denitrification process. In this study, a computational analysis technique was used to improve the uniformity of the NH3/NO molar ratio by controlling the flow rate of the ammonia injection nozzle according to the flow distribution of nitrogen oxides in the inlet exhaust gas of the denitrification facility. The application model was simplified to the two-dimensional array adopted from the existing selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process in the large-scaled coal-fired power plant. As the inlet conditions, four (4) types of flow pattern were simulated, i.e., parabolic, upper-skewed, lower-skewed, and random. A Fully Meshless Approach to the Numerical Simulation of Heat Conduction Problems over Arbitrary 3D Geometries
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CAE, heat conduction, Julia, meshless, RBF-FD.
One of the goals of new CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) software is to reduce both time and costs of the design process without compromising accuracy. This result can be achieved, for instance, by promoting a “plug and play” philosophy, based on the adoption of automatic mesh generation algorithms. This in turn brings about some drawbacks, among others an unavoidable loss of accuracy due to the lack of specificity of the produced discretization. Alternatively it is possible to rely on the so called “meshless” methods, which skip the mesh generation process altogether. The purpose of this paper is to present a fully meshless approach, based on Radial Basis Function generated Finite Differences (RBF-FD), for the numerical solution of generic elliptic PDEs, with particular reference to time-dependent and steady 3D heat conduction problems. The absence of connectivity information, which is a peculiar feature of this meshless approach, is leveraged in order to develop an efficient procedur... [more]

Performance Assessment of Double Corrugated Tubes in a Tube-In-Shell Heat Exchanger
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD modelling, enhanced heat transfer, nature inspired geometry, turbulent flow region.
In this article, the performance of double corrugated tubes applied in a tube-in-shell heat exchanger is analysed and compared to the performance of a heat exchanger equipped with straight tubes. The CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis was performed considering a turbulent flow regime at several mass flow rates. It is observed that the double corrugated geometry does not have a significant impact on the pressure drop inside the analysed heat exchanger, while it has the potential to increase its thermal performance by up to 25%. The ε−NTU (effectiveness−number of transfer units) relation also demonstrates the advantage of using double corrugated tubes in tube-in-shell heat exchangers over straight tubes.
