Modeling, Simulation, Optimization, and Experimental Verification of Mercury Removal onto Natural and Sulfur-Impregnated Zeolite Clinoptilolite—Assessment of Feasibility for Remediation of Mercury-Contaminated Soil

In this paper, a series of equilibrium and kinetic experiments of Hg(II) removal in a single-stage batch reactor on natural (NZ) and sulfur-impregnated zeolite (SZ) were performed. Batch sorption of Hg(II) on zeolites was studied using different isothermal and kinetic models. It was found to be best described by the Brouers-Sotolongo isotherm and the Vermeulen’s approximation, which were applied in optimizing the mass and contact time in two-stage cross-current and counter-current flow batch reactors based on the desired criterion of 99.9% removal efficiency. Mathematical models for minimizing zeolite mass and contact time were developed and experimentally verified. The optimum minimum masses of NZ and SZ were calculated for all systems, and a significant saving in SZ consumption was found when the counter-current design was applied. Previous studies have established to research that the drops in the ambient temperature would slow down the consolidation process, resulting in the slow dissipation of excess pore water pressure. In this paper, by analyzing the heat and mass transfer characteristics of the dehumidification runner microelement channel of a drinking water emergency extraction vehicle, a mathematical model of heat and mass transfer in the water intake process is established, and the influence of the runner parameters (adsorbent thickness, regeneration angle, rotation speed) and air parameters (treatment air temperature/humidity, regenerated air temperature/humidity) on the water intake characteristics is mainly studied. Water extraction experiments are carried out in arid desert areas and humid island environments. The test results showed that compared with the calculated data, the deviations in the temperature and humidity of the treated air outlet were 3.03% and 4.14%, respectively, and the deviation value of the water intake was 8.23% when the moisture content of the inlet air was 2 g/kg.

Ground Risk Assessment for Unmanned Aircraft Focusing on Multiple Risk Sources in Urban Environments

This paper investigates the risk quantification for Unmanned Aircraft (UA) in urban environments, focusing on the safety of ground people. An assessment methodology is proposed to quantify the flying risk, which indicates the ground fatalities resulted from different potential risk sources. With the knowledge of UA’s specifications and ground environments, the flying risk of the target UA flying in the target area could be evaluated from the combination of results from independent assessment procedures focusing on multiple potential risk sources with specific safety metrics. A study case to assess the flying risk of the Talon and the DJI Inspire 2 flying in one piece of the region in Chengdu is presented. From the assessment result, the airspace management strategies for both Talon and DJI Inspires 2 could be easily developed to guarantee the safety of ground people, therefore, this risk quantification method could be a general tool to support decision-making in safety work.

Non-Thermal Plasma as a Biomass Pretreatment in Biorefining Processes

Climatic changes and the growing population call for innovative solutions that are able to produce biochemicals by adopting environmentally sustainable procedures. The biorefinery concept meets this requirement. However, one of the main drawbacks of biorefineries is represented by the feedstocks’ pretreatment. Lately, scientific research has focused on non-thermal plasma, which is an innovative and sustainable pretreatment that is able to obtain a high sugar concentration. In the present review, literature related to the use of non-thermal plasma for the production of fermentable sugar have been collected. In particular, its sugar extraction, time, and energy consumption have been compared with those of traditional biomass pretreatments. Anaerobic digestion (AD) of sewage sludge can be optimised by adding trade wastes (TWs) because of their nutrient content and boost in biogas formation if non-inhibitory. However, some components in TWs might have an inhibitory impact, such as nitrogen compounds, sulphate, heavy metals, metalloids, halogens and organic pollutants (e.g., phenol). This study aimed to understand the impact of TWs on the co-digestion with sewage sludge to identify appropriate TW loads for sustainable AD operation. Removal of the Pigment Congo Red from Synthetic Wastewater with a Novel and Inexpensive Adsorbent Generated from Powdered Foeniculum Vulgare Seeds

In this research, powdered Foeniculum vulgare seed (FVSP) was treated separately with H2C2O4, ZnCl2, and a mixture of ZnCl2-CuS. The characteristics of the treated and untreated FVSP samples, as well as their abilities to eliminate Congo red (CR) from solutions, were investigated. The influences of the empirical circumstances on CR adsorption by the ideal adsorbent were studied. The thermodynamic, isothermal, and dynamic constants of this adsorption were also inspected. The ideal adsorbent was found to be the FVSP sample treated with a ZnCl2-CuS mixture, which eliminated 96.80% of the CR dye. Effect of Environmental Conditions on Strontium Adsorption by Red Soil Colloids in Southern China

The fate of radionuclides in the environment is attracting increased attention. The effect of various environmental effects on the adsorption behavior of the strontium ion (Sr2+) by red soil colloids in Southern China was studied by a series of batch experiments, and the adsorption mechanism was briefly investigated as well. With the increase in the solid−liquid ratio and the concentration of Sr2+, the adsorption efficiency increased gradually. The effect of pH and ionic strength on adsorption was strong, while temperature had little effect. The adsorption data fitted to the Langmuir model indicates that the process is monolayered and homogeneous. The thermodynamic parameters also show that the adsorption of Sr2+ on red soil colloids is a spontaneous and exothermic process. The aim of this work is to gain insight into the role of red soil colloids on the fate of radionuclides in the field.

Treatment Wetlands in Mexico for Control of Wastewater Contaminants: A Review of Experiences during the Last Twenty-Two Years

Constructed or treatment wetlands (CWs) are a sustainable option to clean wastewater in the face of water pollution problems. Consequently, this study was aimed at reviewing and analyzing the use of CWs in Mexico. This involved types, sizes, and functionality in the removal of pollutants, as well as the main plant species that are used. Furthermore, 67 studies regarding CWs were found, which were classified according to the treatment area as microcosms, mesocosms, pilot scale, and full-scale at 18, 30, 25, and 27%, respectively. The most used types of CWs are those of subsurface flow (87%) versus free-water surface (13%), of which horizontal flow direction (58%) are the most common. Considering Full-Scale CWs, the pollutant removal reported for COD, BOD5, TN, and TP oscillated between 50−90%, 60−90%, 30−90%, and 30−70%, respectively.
