Environmental and Economic Analysis of an Anaerobic Co-Digestion Power Plant Integrated with a Compost Plant
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, compost, externalities, global warming potential, life cycle assessment
Italian power generation through anaerobic digestion (AD) has grown significantly between 2009 and 2016, becoming an important renewable energy resource for the country, also thanks to the generous incentives for produced electricity available in the last years. This work focuses on the economic and environmental issues of AD technology and proposes a techno-economic analysis of investment profitability without government support. In particular, the analysis focuses on an AD power plant fed by zootechnical wastewater and agro-industrial residues coupled to a cogeneration (CHP) system and a digestate-composting plant that produces soil fertilizers. We aim to determine the economic profitability of such AD power plants fed by inner-farm biomass wastes, exploiting digestate as fertilizer, using the cogenerated heat and taking into account the externalities (environmental benefits). Environmental analysis was carried out via a life cycle analysis (LCA), and encompassing the production of b... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: historic core of cities, literature review, PRISMA, smart cities, state-of-the-art, suburbanized core cities, survey, sustainable architecture, sustainable cities, sustainable development, sustainable development goals (SDGs), sustainable regeneration, sustainable urban development, urban cores
The united nations educational, scientific and cultural organization (UNESCO) considers the historic urban landscapes as the world heritages. Managing historic city centers and maintaining historic cores are the emerging challenges for sustainable urban planning. Today, the historic cores form an important part of the economic, social, environmental, and physical assets and capacities of contemporary cities, and play a strategic role in their development. One of the most important approaches to the development of central textures, especially in historical and cultural cities, is the sustainable urban regeneration approach, which encompasses all aspects of sustainability, such as the economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects. To maintain sustainability and regeneration of historic cores of cities, it is necessary to provide insight into the underlying characteristics of the local urbanization. Furthermore, the fundamental assets are to be investigated as indicators of sustain... [more]

Life Cycle Assessment and Energy Balance of a Novel Polyhydroxyalkanoates Production Process with Mixed Microbial Cultures Fed on Pyrolytic Products of Wastewater Treatment Sludge
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: bio-based polymers, biodegradable plastics, energy metrics, LCA, PHAs, pyrolysis, volatile fatty acids
A “cradle-to-grave” life cycle assessment is performed to identify the environmental issues of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) produced through a hybrid thermochemical-biological process using anaerobically digested sewage sludge (ADSS) as feedstock. The assessment includes a measure of the energy performance of the process. The system boundary includes: (i) Sludge pyrolysis followed by volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production; (ii) PHAs-enriched biomass production using a mixed microbial culture (MMC); (iii) PHAs extraction with dimethyl carbonate; and iv) PHAs end-of-life. Three scenarios differing in the use of the syngas produced by both pyrolysis and biochar gasification, and two more scenarios differing only in the external energy sources were evaluated. Results show a trade-off between environmental impacts at global scale, such as climate change and resources depletion, and those having an effect at the local/regional scale, such as acidification, eutrophication, and toxicity. March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cellulase, coffee husk, life cycle assessment (LCA), solid-state fermentation (SSF), submerged fermentation (SmF), waste
This article studies the environmental impacts of cellulase production by using a comparative attributional life cycle assessment (LCA) of two different scenarios of production. The first one is the commonly used submerged fermentation (SmF) using a pure substrate (cellulose powder) and a specific microorganism (Trichoderma reesei). The second scenario considers a novel system to produce enzymes and simultaneously treat a waste using the solid-state fermentation (SSF) process of coffee husk (CH) used as substrate. Experimental data were used in this scenario. The complete production process was studied for these two technologies including the fermentation phase and the complete downstream of cellulase. Life cycle inventory (LCI) data were collected from the database EcoInvent v3 (SimaPro 8.5) modified by data from literature and pilot scale experiments. The environmental impacts of both production systems revealed that those of SmF were higher than those of SSF. A sensitivity analysis... [more]

Characteristics of Miscanthus Fuel by Wet Torrefaction on Fuel Upgrading and Gas Emission Behavior
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Biomass, combustion, miscanthus, upgrading fuel, wet torrefaction
Biomass is a solid fuel that can be used instead of coal to address the issue of greenhouse gases. Currently, biomass is used directly in combustion or via co-combustion in coal-fired power plants. However, its use is limited due to calorific value and ash problems. In this study, wet torrefaction (WT) was carried out at various temperatures (160 °C, 180 °C, and 200 °C) and the properties of the product were evaluated. In comparison to dry torrefaction, the ash contained in biomass was extracted by an acidic solution (i.e., acetic acid) from the overreaction of the biomass. From examining the ash content of the treated WT, it was confirmed that K2O of basic ash was mainly extracted. In particular, in the case of K2O, since the main cause of combustion problems are issues such as fouling and slagging, the removed WT can be stably combusted in the boiler. Finally, the combustion and emission behaviors were evaluated by TGA-DTG and TGA-FTIR. As the fuel-N was decreased in the WT proess, t... [more]

Impact of Ignition Technique on Pollutants Emission during the Combustion of Selected Solid Biofuels
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: combustion, harmful gas, solid biofuels, top ignition combustion mode
Nowadays, heating using wood, briquettes, or pellets is a curious replacement to fossil fuels such as coal, oil, or gas. Unfortunately, the combustion of biofuels, especially in low-power boilers with unstable operating conditions, releases a lot of gas pollutants (e.g., carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), and various organic compounds) that are usually generated due to the incomplete product combustion. The combustion of biofuel in grate boilers with top-down ignition is a new approach, popular in society (mainly used for coal fuels), which improves the combustion process and reduces the amount of pollutants emitted. This study evaluated the impact of ignition techniques on the emission level of gas pollutants during the combustion of wood logs, briquettes, and pellets of pine in grate-based charging boilers. The combination of top ignition mode with pinewood logs allowed us to achieve a reduction of 6% in CO and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission into the atmosphere. However, the com... [more]

The Environmental Kuznets Curve and the Energy Mix: A Structural Estimation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: emissions, energy mix, environmental dynamic general equilibrium model, Environmental Kuznets Curve, Fossil Fuel, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis establishes the existence of an inverted U-shaped relationship between income and environmental deterioration. This paper studies the relationship between the energy mix and pollutant emissions and uses an environmental dynamic general equilibrium model to carry out a structural estimation of the EKC hypothesis. The model considers a three-input production function, including energy. Energy is a composite of fossil fuels and renewable energy sources. The flow of pollutant emissions depends on fossil fuels’ consumption, which accumulates in a pollution stock, resulting in a negative externality that adversely impacts aggregate productivity. Simulations of the model support the existence of a steady-state EKC relationship between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the stock of pollution, where the negative slope side of the curve is very flat. We find that (i) the EKC hypothesis is only fulfilled when the elasticity of substitution between f... [more]

Spatial Pattern of a Comprehensive fE Index for Provincial Carbon Emissions in China
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ecology, economy, equity, provincial carbon emission and sink, spatial pattern
China has committed to ambitious targets to reduce its carbon emissions in the next decades, in order to combat climate change and improve the environment. The realization of the targets depends on the fair and effective mitigation plans of all provinces. However, with varying ecological and environmental conditions and social-economic development, it is a critical issue to quantify the provinces’ efforts equally. This paper proposed a comprehensive fE index in coordinating ecology, equity and economy, by accounting for carbon emissions and sinks to characterize provincial carbon emission status in China, from 2000 to 2017, which shows a spatial pattern of “boundary high, central low”. The provinces with higher fE value (>1.5) in boundary areas can be seen as “relative equality” provinces with good ecology circulation, equity and economic efficiency. The provinces with lower fE value (<0.7) in central areas around Bohai Bay are regarded as “severe inequality” provinces, and are iden... [more]

Possibilities and Challenges for the Inclusion of the Electric Vehicle (EV) to Reduce the Carbon Footprint in the Transport Sector: A Review
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: battery, BEV, capacitor, charging station, fuel cell, PHEV, solar PV, subsidy
To combat global climate change moving towards sustainable, mobility is one of the most holistic approaches. Hence, decarbonization of the transport sector by employing electric vehicles (EVs) is currently an environmentally benign and efficient solution. The EV includes the hybrid EV (HEV), the plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV), and the battery EV (BEV). A storage system, a charging station, and power electronics are the essential components of EVs. The EV charging station is primarily powered from the grid which can be replaced by a solar photovoltaic system. Wide uptake of EVs is possible by improving the technologies, and also with support from the government. However, greenhouse gas emission (GHG) saving potential of the EV is debatable when the required power to charge the EV comes from traditional fossil fuel sources.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon dioxide (CO2), driving conditions, EEPS, GDI, NIER testing mode, particle number (PN)
Although the chassis dynamometer type approval test considers real-world conditions, there are a few limitations to the experimental test environment that may affect gaseous or particulate emissions such as road conditions, traffic, decreasing tire pressure, or fluctuating ambient temperature. Furthermore, the real driving emission (RDE) test takes a long time, and it is too long to repeat under different experimental conditions. The National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) test modes that reflect the driving pattern of Korea are not certification test modes, but can be used to evaluate the influence of traffic conditions because these modes consist of a total of 15 test modes that vary according to average speed. The use of the NIER #03, #09, and #13 modes as low-, medium-, and high-speed modes allow for gaseous and particulate emissions to be measured and analyzed. Greenhouse Gas Reduction Effect of Solar Energy Systems Applicable to High-rise Apartment Housing Structures in South Korea
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 reduction, energy production, high-rise apartment, photovoltaic, photovoltaic thermal, solar thermal system, TRNSYS18
In South Korea, we are aiming for net zero energy use apartment home structures. Since the apartment structure in South Korea is generally a high-rise of 10 or more floors, the types of renewable energy applicable are limited to photovoltaic (PV) panels, solar collectors installed on the wall, or a photovoltaic thermal (PVT) hybrid panel combining both. In this study, the effect of PV, ST (Solar Thermal), and PVT systems on greenhouse gas reduction was analyzed using TRNSYS18. All three systems showed maximum CO2 reductions at 35° facing south. PV, ST, and PVT showed CO2 reductions of 67.4, 114.6, and 144.7 kg_CO2/m2·year, respectively. Compared to those values, when installed on a wall (slope of 90°), CO2 reduction is about 35−40% less and about 20% less at a slope of 75°. ST and PVT installed on the vertical wall have a greater greenhouse gas reduction effect than the PV installed at the optimal slope of 35°. Since the CO2 reduction difference among SW, SE, and azimuthal S is within... [more]

A Decade On, How Has the Visibility of Energy Changed? Energy Feedback Perceptions from UK Focus Groups
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy feedback, energy reduction behaviours, focus groups, in-home display, smart meters
The Smart Meter Rollout Programme in the UK has required energy suppliers to offer new smart meters to customers to provide near real-time energy use information and enable two-way communication between the meter and the central system. The provision was expected to result in meaningful energy reductions, but recent estimates suggest that these reductions may be as low as 2%. This paper contributes to the ongoing debate about the effectiveness of smart meters and in-home energy displays by providing insights on energy feedback perceptions from a series of focus groups with postgraduate consumers. In addition to domestic energy use, the study investigated how participants perceived their energy use at work and how they perceived the energy reduction efforts of their institutions and employers. A laddered and projective methodology was used to more deeply question participant perceptions and reveal their attitudes. The analysis of responses revealed a limited awareness around energy effi... Comparative and Relational Trajectory of Economic Growth and Greenhouse Gas Emission: Coupled or Decoupled?
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 emission, Fuzzy-set Ideal Type Analysis, GDP, international comparative level, low-carbon economy
This study looks at the global trajectory of the relationship between GDP (gross domestic product) and CO2 (carbon dioxide) emission in the time-series, comparative, and transitional point of view (from Y1992 to Y2014). It sets up a measurement framework and compares thirty-seven countries (thirty-six OECD countries and China) through the fuzzy-set ideal type analysis while focusing on the comparative and relational types. This research found that economic growth (GDP) and environmental problems (CO2 emissions) are tied together in a very solid path-dependent relationship. Particularly, the analysis of comparisons among OECD countries and China shows that the relationship between GDP and CO2 emissions is very firmly coupled, unlike the previous non-combination of one-dimensional statistics that are based on the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis. In short, it draws out and highlights the research implications that the existing conventions regarding the relationship between su... [more]

Energy, Environmental and Economic Performance of an Urban Community Hybrid Distributed Energy System
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: agent-based model, carbon dioxide emissions, distribution microgrid, primary energy saving
Energy systems face great challenges from both the supply and demand sides. Strong efforts have been devoted to investigate technological solutions aiming at overcoming the problems of fossil fuel depletion and the environmental issues due to the carbon emissions. Hybrid (activated by both renewables and fossil fuels) distributed energy systems can be considered a very effective and promising technology to replace traditional centralized energy systems. As a most peculiar characteristic, they reduce the use of fossil sources and transmission and distribution losses along the main power grid and contribute to electric peak shaving and partial-loads losses reduction. As a direct consequence, the transition from centralized towards hybrid decentralized energy systems leads to a new role for citizens, shifting from a passive energy consumer to active prosumers able to produce energy and distribute energy. Such a complex system needs to be carefully modelled to account for the energy intera... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: biomass production, COD removal, microalgae co-culture, polyphenol removal, winery wastewater valorization
Even though biofuel production from microalgae has become more and more attractive in recent years, it is limited especially by the high cost of microalgae cultivation. However, microalgae can be grown in wastewater in order to reduce their production cost and, at the same time, the polluting impact of wastewaters. Winery wastewaters, which are abundantly released from the wine making process, have a large pollution impact related to their high loads of total solids, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and polyphenol concentration. In this research work a co-culture of Chlorella vulgaris and Arthrospira platensis was used to treat three different winery wastewaters from different steps of the wine production process, in order to produce low-cost biomass intended for biofuel production. Growth of the co-culture and reduction of wastewater pollutant impact were followed by daily determinations of biomass concentration, COD and polyphenol content. Subject: Environment
Keywords: coal city, economic development, EKC hypothesis, environmental issue, environmentally sustainable development, Tapio decoupling model, VAR model
Coal cities are an essential impetus for economic development and urbanization processes in China. However, a series of environmental issues provoked by resource exploitation cause the environmental sustainability of coal cities to face enormous challenges. Therefore, on the basis of the time series data of Yulin City from 1996 to 2017, this paper explores the nexus between socioeconomic development and industrial “three wastes” emissions by adopting the Tapio decoupling model, the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis, and the vector auto-regressive (VAR) model. The results show that Yulin’s economic development remains in an extensive stage and will not decouple from the environmental pollution in a short time. Except for the nexus of industrial solid waste and economic growth, which is an inverted U-shaped, the EKC hypothesis is not valid for industrial wastewater and industrial waste gas.
