Does Environment Matter in Smart Revitalization Strategies? Management towards Sustainable Urban Regeneration Programs in Poland
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: environment, indicators, regeneration program, renewal, smart city, Sustainability, sustainable development goals (SDGs), sustainable regeneration, urban regeneration
The article presents the course of the evolution of the concept of urban renewal’s emergence into its current, mature, integrated form of sustainable regeneration (sustainable urban regeneration—SUR). We present how the determination of renewal areas and its goals began to be based on particular indicators, and how the importance of these analyses gradually increased in managing the implementation of urban regeneration programs. Analytical techniques using GIS were used in the analyses of the differentiation of crisis phenomena inside cities before they became popular in smart city tools. Despite the wide use of GIS to analyze the diversity of crisis phenomena within the city, the availability of data means that different spheres are characterized with different accuracy. Starting from the significance of individual spheres, the focus has primarily been on the environment, which is underappreciated in Poland. Municipalities (urban, rural, urban−rural) with regeneration programs do not... [more]

Energy, Exergy, Exergoeconomic, and Exergoenvironmental Assessment of Flash-Binary Geothermal Combined Cooling, Heating and Power Cycle
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CCHP, exergoeconomic, Exergy, geothermal, ORC
This research presents the energy, exergy, economic, and environmental assessment, and multi-objective optimization of a flash-binary geothermal CCHP cycle. A sensitivity analysis of production well inlet temperature and cooling to power flow ratio on exergetic, economic, and environmental parameters was conducted. Furthermore, the effects of the inflation rate and plant working hours on economic parameters were investigated. Results showed that increasing the production well inlet temperature harms exergy efficiency and exergetic performance criteria and results in a gain in exergo-environmental impact index and heating capacity. In addition, the total plant cost increased by raising the production well temperature. Furthermore, increasing the cooling to power flow ratio caused a reduction in exergy efficiency, exergetic performance criteria, and produced net power and an enhancement in exergy destruction, cooling capacity, and total plant cost. The exergy efficiency and total cost ra... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: brine treatment, energy reduction, life-cycle analysis, metals, resource recovery, wastewater treatment
Seawater represents a potential resource to ensure sustainable availability of water for population and irrigation purposes, especially in some areas of the world. Desalination processes allow the production of fresh water, but they generate also brine as waste product. Sustainable brine management should be identified to ensure proper disposal and potentially resource recovery. This experimental study showed that emerging technologies such as Microbial Desalination Cells (MDCs) may provide a valuable contribution to the sustainability of the seawater desalination sector. In this paper, we report results on lab-scale desalination brine treatments applying MDCs, which allow energy savings, resource recovery, environmental impact minimization, and reduction of the organic load in municipal wastewater. Our results showed that MDCs’ treatment allows the removal of approximately 33 g of salts (62% of the total)—including chlorides, bromides, and sulphates—from 20 mL of brine within 96 h. Th... [more]

Efficient air-cooling systems for hot climatic conditions, such as Southern Europe, are required in the context of nearly Zero Energy Buildings, nZEB. Innovative air-cooling systems such as regenerative indirect evaporative coolers, RIEC and desiccant regenerative indirect evaporative coolers, DRIEC, can be considered an interesting alternative to direct expansion air-cooling systems, DX. The main aim of the present work was to evaluate the seasonal performance of three air-cooling systems in terms of air quality, thermal comfort and energy consumption in a standard classroom. Several annual energy simulations were carried out to evaluate these indexes for four different climate zones in the Mediterranean area. The simulations were carried out with empirically validated models. The results showed that DRIEC and DX improved by 29.8% and 14.6% over RIEC regarding thermal comfort, for the warmest climatic conditions, Lampedusa and Seville. However, DX showed an energy consumption three an... [more]

Numerical Simulation of Transient Combustion and the Acoustic Environment of Obstacle Vortex-Driven Flow
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: combustion instability, fuel savings, numerical simulation, solid fuel, transient combustion
Solid fuel combustion in a chamber does not necessarily occur at a constant rate and may show fluctuations due to variables such as varying burning rates, chamber pressure, and residual combustion. These variables can cause the fuel to burn disproportionately. The acoustic environment of obstacle vortex-driven flow due to transient combustion with pressure oscillations in a solid fuel chamber is numerically investigated in the present study. Solid fuel combustion is considered transient, and flow characteristics of the present problem are governed by large eddies shed from an obstacle. Since unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations are not appropriate to compute the present flow phenomenon, therefore, a detached eddy simulation (DES) is performed to precisely predict the flow behavior. Simulation of steady-state combustion is carried out to validate the numerical results with available experimental data from the literature. The simulation of transient combustion sho... [more]

Evaluating China’s Role in Achieving the 1.5 °C Target of the Paris Agreement
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: 1.5 °C target, China’s emissions, climate change mitigation, methane, Paris Agreement
Now that many countries have set goals for reaching net zero emissions by the middle of the century, it is important to clarify the role of each country in achieving the 1.5 °C target of the Paris Agreement. Here, we evaluated China’s role by calculating the global temperature impacts caused by China’s emission pathways available in global emissions scenarios toward the 1.5 °C target. Our results show that China’s contribution to global warming in 2050 (since 2005) is 0.17 °C on average, with a range of 0.1 °C to 0.22 °C. The peak contributions of China vary from 0.1 °C to 0.23 °C, with the years reached distributing between 2036 and 2065. The large difference in peak temperatures arises from the differences in emission pathways of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). We further analyzed the effect of the different mix of CO2 and CH4 mitigation trajectories in China’s pathways on the global mean temperature. We found that China’s near-term CH4 mitigation reduc... Global Warming Potential of New Gaseous Refrigerants Used in Chillers in HVAC Systems
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air cooling, air pollutant, climate change, CO2 equivalent, Global Warming Potential (GWP), Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), sustainable development
Due to the global warming and resulting problems, attention has been paid to greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere since the 1980s and 1990s. For this reason, the Montreal Protocol and the Kyoto Protocol have tightened regulations on the use of gaseous refrigerants in both HVAC systems and industrial refrigeration. Gradually, new generations of gaseous refrigerants, that theoretically have much less negative environmental impact than their predecessors, are introduced into the market. The key parameter describing environmental impact is the GWP index, which is most often defined on a time horizon of 100 years. The long-term use of new generations of gaseous refrigerants in HVAC systems reduces CO2 emissions into the atmosphere; however, given that new generation gases often have a short lifetime, it seems that the adopted assessment may not be applicable. The aim of the article was to show how emissions of CO2 equivalent to the atmosphere differs in the short and long time hori... [more]

Analytical and Numerical Analyses on Vertical Site Responses of Submarine Permafrost in Polar Ocean
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: analytical solution, COMSOL, dynamic response, energy geotechnics, frozen porous medium, resonance, submarine permafrost
Submarine permafrost is widely distributed in polar ocean, which has an important impact on polar engineering and subsea energy exploitation. According to the frozen porous medium theory, an analytical solution of the one-dimensional vertically dynamic response of the submarine permafrost is derived by using the Laplace transform and the separation variable method. Using the general forms of partial differential equations and the pressure acoustics module in COMSOL software, a finite element model of submarine permafrost overlying a seawater layer is established. The results show that the degraded solution agrees well with the existing results of the vertically dynamic response of the saturated soil layer in the seabed, and the analytical and numerical solutions are in good agreement. The water depth, saturation and temperature have important effects on the dynamic responses of submarine permafrost. When the soil layer is fully saturated, the water depth has a weak effect on resonance... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: biogas, hybrid energy system, multicriteria decision analysis, off grid, rural electrification, solar mini-grid
Due to the significance of environmental aspects, the modeling of hybrid systems should be performed with the lowest cost and environmental pollution. Therefore, an effective and optimum sizing method can ensure acceptable performance. This paper implements a “technique for order performance by similarity to the ideal solution” (TOPSIS) method combined with the “analytic hierarchy process (AHP)” method to size a standalone system based on techno-economic parameters. For this reason, a survey was conducted to collect local load data on Monpura Island, located in Bhola, Bangladesh. Visible and design faults of the existing PV/diesel mini-grid have also been identified. Five alternative hybrid configurations have been considered as to evaluate the best optimum system. Two economic and one environmental criterion was used to size the system. Two experts specialized in energy systems evaluated the criteria and proposed the suitable system. Advances in Energy Hybridization for Resilient Supply: A Sustainable Approach to the Growing World Demand
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: hybrid energy system, Life Cycle Analysis, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, resilience
Energy poverty, defined as a lack of access to reliable electricity and reliance on traditional biomass resources for cooking, affects over a billion people daily. The World Health Organization estimates that household air pollution from inefficient stoves causes more premature deaths than malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. Increasing demand for energy has led to dramatic increases in emissions. The need for reliable electricity and limiting emissions drives research on Resilient Hybrid Energy Systems (RHESs), which provide cleaner energy through combining wind, solar, and biomass energy with traditional fossil energy, increasing production efficiency and reliability and reducing generating costs and emissions. Microgrids have been shown as an efficient means of implementing RHESs, with some focused mainly on reducing the environmental impact of electric power generation. The technical challenges of designing, implementing, and applying microgrids involve conducting a cradle-to-grave... [more]

Changes in Stabile Organic Carbon in Differently Managed Fluvisol Treated by Two Types of Anaerobic Digestate
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: crop rotation field, Fluvisol, grassland, liquid digestate fraction, solid digestate fraction, stabile soil organic carbon, stratification
Biogas and anaerobic digestion has begun to be considered an important renewable and sustainable energy source. The sustainable development of the anaerobic digestion process depends largely on the ability to manage large amounts of by-products generated during the biogas production process. We hypothesized that the use of digestate increases the accumulation of C in stable forms. We supposed that the effect of digestate on soil depends on the land-use system, leading to different stratifications of C. The main task of our research was to ascertain changes in the amount of stabile organic carbon (SOCstabile) in digestate-treated soils. Two field experiments were performed using the same design in 2019−2020. We studied the fertilization effects of digestate on Fluvisol. Fertilization: control; separated liquid digestate 85 kg ha−1 N and 170 kg ha−1 170 N; separated solid digestate 85 kg ha−1 N and 170 kg ha−1 N. Analysis of the Spectral Sensitivity of Luxmeters and Light Sensors of Smartphones in Terms of Their Influence on the Results of Illuminance Measurements—Example Cases
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: illuminance, illuminance meter, light source, photometric head, smartphone, spectral correction, spectral correction error, spectral sensitive curve
The article presents spectral sensitivity curves of 22 typical luxmeters and 3 smartphones as a result of laboratory measurements. Based on the measurement data, errors in the spectral correction of the considered instruments and devices were calculated. Due to the fact that the value of the measured illuminance is influenced by the spectral characteristics of the radiation, in order to determine the spectral corrections coefficients, 10 light sources with different spectral distributions of radiation were taken into account. Spectral corrections factors were determined using two methods for all luxmeters and smartphones. This paper presents the relationship between the shape of the spectral sensitivity curves of a given luxmeter and the measured values of f′1 errors. Moreover, the limitations related to the use of spectral corrections in environmental measurements with the use of a luxmeter were demonstrated.
