Mohammed Kamil, Fatima M. Almarashda
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, date seeds, diesel engine, engine performance, return of investment
Desert palm date seeds are a potential feedstock for biodiesel and biomass pellet production, particularly in the Middle East and Africa. A model was developed in this study based on optimal conditions for the production of biodiesel, and it was used to evaluate the financial viability of a small-scale biodiesel plant (1000 t/y) using economic performance metrics including net present value, rate of investment, and payback period. Biodiesel was then produced from date seed oil (DSO) and blended with petrol diesel to make four blends (B5, B10, B15, and B20). The technical performance of these blends was investigated using a test engine rig under differing operating conditions, including variations in load and rpm. The investment performance of the proposed biodiesel plant was very sensitive to the price of biomass pellets; the project was feasible only when this was 70% that of wood pellets or higher. The baseline diesel outperformed the biodiesel blends in terms of engine power, therma... [more]

Keywords: Energy Efficiency, high-speed machining, industrial growth, process innovation
Ensuring the vibration reliability of power equipment is one of the fundamental problems in modern power machinery. This problem has become more critical due to a permanent increase in the machining performance of high-speed milling of axial turbine blades. This article aims to identify reliable vibration parameters for high-speed milling of turbine blades to increase the energy efficiency of gas and steam turbines. For this purpose, mathematical models of free and forced oscillations of turbine blades during machining were developed. As a result of considering experimental and finite element analysis data, critical frequencies and corresponding mode shapes of free oscillations were identified using regression procedures by the best fit of analytical and empirical approaches. Additionally, after considering the forced oscillations of blades during high-speed machining, the magnitude of the specific cutting force and external damping ratio in the system ‘axial turbine blade and milling... Keywords: economic analysis, green hydrogen production, hydrogen power plant, power-to-gas, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Hydrogen is regarded as a flexible energy carrier with multiple applications across several sectors. For instance, it can be used in industrial processes, transports, heating, and electrical power generation. Green hydrogen, produced from renewable sources, can have a crucial role in the pathway towards global decarbonization. However, the success of green hydrogen production ultimately depends on its economic sustainability. In this context, this work evaluates the economic performance of a hydrogen power plant participating in the electricity market and supplying multiple hydrogen consumers. The analysis includes technical and economical details of the main components of the hydrogen power plant. Its operation is simulated using six different scenarios, which admit the production of either grey or green hydrogen. The scenarios used for the analysis include data from the Iberian electricity market for the Portuguese hub. An important conclusion is that the combination of multiple serv... [more]

Keywords: air-cushion surge chamber, flow regime, load disturbances, pressure variation, surge fluctuation
Hydroelectric energy is an increasingly vital and effective renewable energy for modern society. The protective effect on the water hammer in the pipeline, the operational stability of the hydropower system, and the flow regime in the air-cushion surge chamber (ACSC) are three main problems during the design of the hydropower station with an ACSC. Comprehensively comparing the above issues between the horizontal and vertical ACSCs is meaningful. This study established the one-dimensional (1D) model based on the Method of Characteristics (MOC) under large load disturbances (LLD) and the rigid water column theory under small load disturbances (SLD). At the same time, the three-dimensional (3D) model was built based on the Volume of Fluid (VOF) to obtain a more detailed flow regime in the ACSC under the load acceptance condition. The results showed that the vertical ACSC was superior to the horizontal one for its large safe water depth, smaller maximum air pressure, and more stable flow u... [more]

Keywords: Blasingame production decline typical curve, flow-rate deconvolution, multi-stage fractured horizontal wells, productivity prediction, shale condensate gas reservoirs
The dynamic productivity prediction of shale condensate gas reservoirs is of great significance to the optimization of stimulation measures. Therefore, in this study, a dynamic productivity prediction method for shale condensate gas reservoirs based on a convolution equation is proposed. The method has been used to predict the dynamic production of 10 multi-stage fractured horizontal wells in the Duvernay shale condensate gas reservoir. The results show that flow-rate deconvolution algorithms can greatly improve the fitting effect of the Blasingame production decline curve when applied to the analysis of unstable production of shale gas condensate reservoirs. Compared with the production decline analysis method in commercial software HIS Harmony RTA, the productivity prediction method based on a convolution equation of shale condensate gas reservoirs has better fitting affect and higher accuracy of recoverable reserves prediction. Compared with the actual production, the error of produ... [more]

Keywords: Batteries, loss minimization, maximum power point tracking, photovoltaic source emulation, quasi-z-source inverter, wind turbine emulation
This paper presents a hybrid renewable energy system (RES) including wind and photovoltaic (PV) power sources. The wind energy subsystem (WES) consists of a squirrel-cage induction generator (SCIG) driven by a variable-speed wind turbine (WT) and corresponding power electronic converter, by means of which a speed-sensorless indirect-rotor-field-oriented control of the SCIG is implemented. The outputs of both the WES and PV power source rated 1.5 kW and 3.5 kW, respectively, are connected to the DC bus, with the quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI) acting as an interlinking converter between the DC bus and the AC grid/load. An advanced pulse-width-modulation scheme is applied to reduce the qZSI switching losses. The considered RES can operate both in grid-tie and island operation, whereas the battery storage system—integrated within the qZSI impedance network—enables more efficient energy management. The proposed control scheme includes successively executed algorithms for the optimization of... [more]

Keywords: consumer attitudes, economic growth, emission reduction, energy conservation, energy consumption, smart grids
This editorial paper tackles the issue of the consumer attitudes toward energy reduction and changing energy consumption behaviors. This topic is of special relevance today as Europe faces an unprecedented energy crisis as a result of diverting from Russian supplies of oil and gas due to the war in Ukraine. For many years now, Europe has relied upon cheap and affordable Russian oil and gas (in fact, the European Green Deal and the strategy for the decarbonization of the economy by 2030 were indirectly based on it), but the transition to the renewable future now appears to be jeopardized. As energy prices are soaring globally, it is not yet clear whether this would have an effect on significantly changing consumer behavior and increasing energy efficiency and security as many consumers are reluctant to change their old habits and are used to having their energy on demand and for any possible occasion. However, changing energy consumption behaviors would be beneficial not only for handli... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: M, met-ocean data, O&M, offshore renewable energy, representative year
In this research, a hierarchical met-ocean data selection model is proposed to reduce the computational cost in stochastic simulation of operation and maintenance (O&M) and enable rapid evaluation of offshore renewable energy systems. The proposed model identifies the most representative data for each calendar month from the long-term historical met-ocean data in two steps, namely the preselection and the refined selection. The preselection incorporates three distinct metrics to evaluate the characteristics of statistical distributions, including the Jensen−Shannon divergence, the encapsulation of extreme met-ocean conditions, as well as the overall vessel accessibility. For the refined selection, a component of temporal synchrony is devised to emulate dynamic changes of met-ocean conditions. As such, a met-ocean reference year comprising twelve representative historical months is subsequently produced and deployed as the input for O&M stochastic simulation. While this research focuses... Lithium-ion batteries are a green and environmental energy storage component, which have become the first choice for energy storage due to their high energy density and good cycling performance. Lithium-ion batteries will experience an irreversible process during the charge and discharge cycles, which can cause continuous decay of battery capacity and eventually lead to battery failure. Accurate remaining useful life (RUL) prediction technology is important for the safe use and maintenance of energy storage components. This paper reviews the progress of domestic and international research on RUL prediction methods for energy storage components. Firstly, the failure mechanism of energy storage components is clarified, and then, RUL prediction method of the energy storage components represented by lithium-ion batteries are summarized. Next, the application of the data−model fusion-based method based on kalman filter and particle filter to RUL prediction of lithium-ion batteries are analy... [more]

Keywords: battery energy storage system, energy transition, intermittency, power factor smoothing, renewable resources, wind power
The insertion of renewable sources to diversify the energy matrix is one of the alternatives for the energy transition. In this sense, Brazil is one of the largest producers of renewable energy in the world, mainly in wind generation. However, the impact of integrating intermittent sources into the system depends on their penetration level, causing problems in the electrical network. To evaluate this scenario, the present article aims to investigate the power quality problems generated by wind turbines in connection with the electrical system and how battery energy storage systems (BESS) solve or mitigate these disturbances in the network. Knowing the impacts of high generation power variability, the focus of the work is the application of power smoothing. However, results are presented for five applications (factor correction, voltage control, power factor smoothing, frequency control and time shift) that can be carried out at the studied wind farm. This article presents a real BESS,... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 emissions, financial development, nonlinearity, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
This study investigates the moderating effect of financial development on the renewable energy−CO2 emissions nexus in OECD countries. We find that both composite financial development and banking sector development have an inverted U-shaped impact on CO2 emissions, while stock market development has a U-shaped impact on CO2 emissions. Further, an increase in renewable energy will reduce CO2 emissions, and this reducing impact is affected by different levels of financial development. When promoting financial development, policymakers should pay more attention to its role in enhancing renewable energy, which is related to emissions reduction.

Keywords: hybrid power systems, local power system, power balance, renewable energy sources
The purpose of this work is to develop a model for balancing the processes of the generation and consumption of electricity, taking into account the random nature of these processes. The subject of the study is hybrid power systems that use traditional and renewable energy sources and have the properties of a local network. Such systems are sensitive to variable generation modes, and the presence of rapid changes in power requires short time intervals. The presence of wind and solar power plants makes it difficult to ensure a balance of power, which increases the need for intermediate energy storage. The research method is a mathematical modeling of random processes of energy consumption and generation, which allows for the analysis of the current power balancing and the obtaining of the integrated characteristics of the state of energy storage and reuse. The unique goal of the study is to take into account the power gradients and the state of charge of the batteries. The results of th... [more]

Keywords: bioenergy, briquettes, densification, fast growing energy tree, poplar chips, short rotation coppice, tree fractions
Studies on the use of biomass from short rotation coppices for briquette production as a sustainable biofuel have been scarce in the literature. This study investigated the effects of two process variables, hammer mill screen size at three levels (5.3, 10.3, and 25.4 mm) and moisture content at three levels (13.6, 19, and 25% (w.b.)), on the properties of briquettes from poplar Max-4 trees. The whole tree was divided into two fractions, the crown and the stem, and briquettes were produced from them. The effects of the variables on compressed density, relaxed density, relaxation ratio, and the shatter index of the briquettes were analyzed. The results showed that the combined interaction of the variables had no significant effects (p > 0.05) on the compressed density, relaxed density, and relaxation ratio of the briquettes. However, hammer mill screen size and moisture content both significantly influenced the shatter index irrespective of the tree fraction (p < 0.05). Hammer mill sc... [more]

Keywords: electricity tariff, energy conscious behavior, energy consumption, extreme learning machine
Historically, the combination of generous subsidies along with extreme climate has led to unsustainable domestic electricity consumption in Saudi Arabia. The residential sector constitutes a significant portion of this consumption. Amid the economic challenges, the country enforced a new electricity tariff for residential consumers in 2018. This study thus leverages change in 2018−2020 by collecting and analyzing the electricity consumption data of 73 households in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The energy consumption is modeled based on the households’ attributes (e.g., dwelling type, ownership, number of residents, rooms, ventilation type, etc.) and applied tariffs using a machine learning technique. The extreme learning machine (ELM) is employed in solving the overfitting problem due to low-volume data. The correlation matrix is also constructed to determine the relationship between the household attributes. The ELM model developed in this study extracts the correlation betwe... [more]

Keywords: alternate voltage control, eigenvalue-based stability analysis, small-signal model, stability analysis, time domain simulations, voltage source converter, wind turbine
This paper studies the stability impact of the alternate voltage controller’s (AVC) low-pass filter (LPF) in a wind turbine’s grid-connected voltage source converter (VSC). A small-signal model of the grid-connected converter is designed with a grid-following synchronization control. More specifically, the non-linear state-space model of the grid-connected converter was developed, including the dynamics of both the inner and outer control loops of the converter, the dynamics of the elements of the electrical system, as well as the digital time delay. An eigenvalue-based stability analysis gives insight into the stability impacts of the outer-loop controllers. It is proven that the cutoff frequency of the AVC’s LPF affects the phase-locked loop (PLL) and AVC bandwidths of instability, as well as the corresponding critical oscillation frequencies. This phenomenon is observed in both weak and strong grids. Consequently, the small-signal stability regions of the PLL and AVC bandwidth can b... [more]

A long-stroke, low-speed marine engine is used as the prime mover of a ship. During the operation of such engines, the excessive wear of the cylinder liners and piston rings frequently occurs. The breakdown of cylinder liners or piston rings is very dangerous for the safety of a vessel, the environment, and the people on board. The reliability of engine components is an extremely important topic, as it influences the efficient operation of the vessel. Therefore, to prevent such undesired events, it is essential that the condition of the cylinder liners and piston rings is frequently assessed. This paper presents research that finds prediction models for the rate of piston ring wear. The compiled prediction models are verified using verification tests. The models can be implemented to evaluate the tendency of piston rings to wear, and can be used to evaluate the quality of cylinder liner lubrication. Our findings will help to obtain the required optimal piston ring wear rates, maintain... [more]

Keywords: Adsorption, CO2 sequestration, diffusion, maceral composition, supercritical fluid
Coal maceral composition has a great effect on gas adsorption and diffusion. The interaction between maceral composition and supercritical CO2 (SCCO2) fluid will affect gas diffusion behavior in coals. Thus, the diffusivity derived from adsorption kinetics of CH4 and CO2 in vitrinite- and inertinite-rich coals with low-violate bituminous rank collected from the Hancheng mine of the Weibei coalfield pre- and post-SCCO2 fluid exposure (SFE) were tested at the conditions of 45 °C and 0.9 MPa. In combination with pore distribution and functional group content, the possible mechanism of the alterations in gas diffusion characteristics in coals with various maceral compositions was addressed. The results show that for vitrinite-rich coals, SFE increases the macropore apparent diffusion coefficient of CH4, while this treatment decreases the micropore apparent diffusion coefficient of CH4. However, the reverse trend is found for CO2 diffusion−adsorption rate. For inertinite-rich coals post-SFE... [more]

Keywords: active layer, analytical expression, composite electrode, lithium-ion battery, modulus estimation
Due to the complex mesostructure and components of composite active layers in lithium-ion battery (LIB) electrodes, coupled with the concentration-dependent material properties and eigenstrains, efficiently estimating the effective modulus of the active layers remains a great challenge. In this work, the classic Mori−Tanaka method is found to be unable to estimate the modulus of the active layer. By realizing the importance of the mesostructure feature, a rod-rod model is proposed. The resulting modulus is expressed analytically. It is shown that the rod-rod model can accurately estimate the modulus evolution of the active layer if the material properties of the components and the evolution of volume fractions are known in advance. Moreover, a simplified rod-rod model is also developed to reduce the complexity of the proposed method. By knowing the volume fractions at two arbitrary states of charge and subsequently determining two constants, the simplified model can estimate the modulu... [more]

Lithium-ion batteries are gaining more attention due to the rapid growth of electrical vehicles (EVs). Additionally, the industry is putting a lot of effort into reusing EV batteries in energy storage systems (ESS). The optimal performance of the repurposed battery system is highly dependent on the individual batteries used in it. These batteries need to be similar in terms of battery capacity, state of health (SOH), and remaining useful life (RUL). Therefore, battery grading techniques are expected to play a vital role in this newly emerging industry. There are various methods suggested to evaluate the aging of a battery in terms of capacity, SOH, and RUL. The use of ohmic resistance is one approach, as it varies with the aging of the battery. In order to measure the ohmic resistance, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used, followed by the curve fitting procedures. In this research a novel method is suggested to measure the ohmic resistance without performing the broadba... [more]
