Transesterification of Algae Oil and Little Amount of Waste Cooking Oil Blend at Low Temperature in the Presence of NaOH
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: algae oil, biodiesel production, free fatty acid (FFA), Optimization, Response Surface Methodology (RSM), transesterification
The present study describes the single-step transesterification method of biodiesel production from high free fatty acid (FFA) waste cooking oil blended with algae oil using a homogeneous base catalyst. Due to high FFA contents, two step transesterification is needed to convert oil into biodiesel and therefore the high FFA content of waste cooking oil is decreased by blending it with low FFA content algae oil, which would further lead only to single step transesterification of low FFA oil. The design and optimization studies were conducted using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The box-Behnken design technique is applied to optimize the three process parameters, i.e., catalyst concentration (0−2 wt%), methanol concentration (v/v) (20−60%) and reaction time (60−180 min) at a uniform reaction temperature of 50 °C. The result of the current study indicates that an effective biodiesel yield of 92% can be obtained at the optimized condition of catalyst concentration of 1.5% (w/w), methan... [more]

Biomass Polygeneration System for the Thermal Conversion of Softwood Waste into Hydrogen and Drop-In Biofuels
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass system modeling, fast pyrolysis, integrated sorption-enhanced gasification (ISEG), polygeneration energy systems, residual biomass valorization
In order to keep the +1.5 °C over-temperature, previously predicted with high confidence by IPPC Sixth Assessment, as minimal as feasible, it is more than vital to achieve a low-emission energy system. Polygeneration systems based on thermochemical processes involve biomass conversion in multi-output of bioenergy carriers and chemicals. Due to reduced energy input and input/output diversification, polygeneration energy systems are considered interesting pathways that can increase competitiveness of biomass-derived products. The proposed route of fast pyrolysis, sorption-enhanced biochar gasification and crude bio-oil hydrodeoxygenation to produce drop-in biofuel and hydrogen is examined. Both kinetic and equilibrium approaches were implemented in Aspen Plus to take into account the effect of the major operating parameters on the process performance and then validated against the literature data. Results show how the process integration leads to improved mass conversion yield and increa... [more]

Effects of Alcohol-Blended Waste Plastic Oil on Engine Performance Characteristics and Emissions of a Diesel Engine
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, diesel engine, GRNNs, n-butanol, waste plastic oil
The current study aims to investigate and compare the effects of waste plastic oil blended with n-butanol on the characteristics of diesel engines and exhaust gas emissions. Waste plastic oil produced by the pyrolysis process was blended with n-butanol at 5%, 10%, and 15% by volume. Experiments were conducted on a four-stroke, four-cylinder, water-cooled, direct injection diesel engine with a variation of five engine loads, while the engine’s speed was fixed at 2500 rpm. The experimental results showed that the main hydrocarbons present in WPO were within the range of diesel fuel (C13−C18, approximately 74.39%), while its specific gravity and flash point were out of the limit prescribed by the diesel fuel specification. The addition of n-butanol to WPO was found to reduce the engine’s thermal efficiency and increase HC and CO emissions, especially when the engine operated at low-load conditions. In order to find the suitable ratio of n-butanol blends when the engine operated at the tes... [more]

Real-Time Economic Dispatch of CHP Systems with Battery Energy Storage for Behind-the-Meter Applications
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CHP systems with BESS, economic dispatch, MILP with LSTM, receding horizon control
The use of combined heat and power (CHP) systems has recently increased due to their high combined efficiency and low emissions. Using CHP systems in behind-the-meter applications, however, can introduce some challenges. Firstly, the CHP system must operate in load-following mode to prevent power export to the grid. Secondly, if the load drops below a predefined threshold, the engine will operate at a lower temperature and hence lower efficiency, as the fuel is only half-burnt, creating significant emissions. The aforementioned issues may be solved by combining CHP with a battery energy storage system (BESS); however, the dispatch of CHP and BESS must be optimised. Offline optimisation methods based on load prediction will not prevent power export to the grid due to prediction errors. Therefore, this paper proposes a real-time Energy Management System (EMS) using a combination of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks, Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP), and Receding Horizo... The ever-growing participation of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in modern distribution networks is replacing an important portion of Conventional Generation (CG), which brings along new challenges in the planning and operation of distribution grids. As RES such as Photovoltaic Energy (PV) and Wind Power Generation (WPG) increase in distribution networks, studies regarding their integration and coordination become more important. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to propose a Multi-period Optimal Power Flow (MOPF) model for the optimal coordination of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) with PV, WPG, and CG in modern distribution networks. The model formulation was developed in A Modeling Language for Mathematical Programming (AMPL) and solved through the Knitro solver within a time horizon of 24 h. A distinctive feature and one of the main contributions of the proposed approach is the fact that BESSs can provide both active and reactive power. The proposed optimization... [more]

Keywords: blade loads, data acquisition system, deployed tidal turbine, instrumentation, strain gages, thermoplastic blades
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory manufactured, instrumented, and deployed thermoplastic composite blades and a data acquisition system (NDAQ) on one of Verdant Power’s Gen5d 5 m diameter tidal turbines in New York’s East River. The thermoplastic blades had internal strain gages, and the NDAQ was a stand-alone system for monitoring and recording the strain and angular position of the blades. The turbine with thermoplastic blades operated and produced power successfully for 3 months, contributing energy to the New York City electric grid. The NDAQ hardware, instrumentation, and structure all survived the deployment and were still functional upon retrieval of the system, but no data were collected. Even though the data retrieval was not a success, data acquisition for deployed subsea marine renewable structures is a new undertaking, and it is critical to share lessons learned from national laboratory experiences. The successful deployment of thermoplastic composite blades marks a... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrodeposition, interconnect, oxide, protective coating, solid oxide fuel cell
This work suggests a method for obtaining heat-resistant protective coatings for 08Kh17T stainless steel that can be used as interconnect material for solid oxide fuel cells. The suggested approach is based on the layer-by-layer precipitation of nickel, cobalt, and manganese, followed by heat treatment in a vacuum and oxidizing atmosphere. XRD results show that the coatings consist of a mixture of metal oxides and compounds with a spinel structure. The obtained coatings demonstrate high resistance to high-temperature oxidation for 100 h. The coating with the ratio of the thicknesses of the cobalt and manganese layers of 1.5/0.5 μm obtained by electrodeposition is the most stable. The specific electrical resistance of this coating is 3.50·10−3 Ω·cm2 after 100 h of exposure at 850 °C, which meets the requirements for SOFC interconnect materials.

Lean Methane Mixtures in Turbulent Jet Ignition Combustion System
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CNG engine, combustion efficiency, combustion system, prechamber, turbulent jet ignition
The development of modern vehicle drives is aimed at reducing fuel consumption (i.e., crude oil) and minimizing the exhaust emission of toxic components. One such development is the implementation of a two-stage combustion system. Such a system initiates ignition in the prechamber, and then the burning mixture flows into the main chamber, where it ignites the lean mixture. The system allows the efficient combustion of lean mixtures, both liquid and gaseous fuels, in the cylinder. This article proposes a solution for internal combustion engines with a cylinder capacity of approx. 500 cm3. The tests were carried out on a single-cylinder engine powered by pure methane supplied through a double, parallel injection system. A wide range of charge ignitability requires the use of an active chamber containing an injector and a spark plug. The tests were carried out at n = 1500 rpm with three load values (indicated mean effective pressure, IMEP): 2, 4 and 6 bar. All of these tests were carried... [more]

Keywords: heat loads, internal cooling, LES, pin fin, turbulence
Large-eddy simulations (LES) were performed to study the turbulent flow in a channel of height H with a staggered array of pin fins with diameter D = H/2 as a function of heating loads that are relevant to the cooling of turbine blades and vanes. The following three heating loads were investigated—wall-to-coolant temperatures of Tw/Tc = 1.01, 2.0, and 4.0—where the Reynolds number at the channel inlet was 10,000 and the back pressure at the channel outlet was 1 bar. For the LES, two different subgrid-scale models—the dynamic kinetic energy model (DKEM) and the wall-adapting local eddy-viscosity model (WALE)—were examined and compared. This study was validated by comparing with data from direct numerical simulation and experimental measurements. The results obtained show high heating loads to create wall jets next to all heated surfaces that significantly alter the structure of the turbulent flow. Keywords: CBM, degasification, methane, methane emissions, non-conventional fuels, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The energy sector is in the spotlight today for its contribution to global warming and its dependence on global geopolitics. Even though many countries have reduced their use of coal, the COVID-19 crisis, the drop in temperatures in Central Asia, and the war between Russia and Ukraine have shown that coal continues to play an important role in this sector today. As long as we continue to depend energetically on coal, it is necessary to create the basis for the successful extraction and industrial use of coal mine methane (CMM), for example, as an unconventional energy resource. Early degassing technology is a technique that allows for the extraction of the methane contained within the coal seams. The application of this technology would reduce emissions, improve mine safety, and even increase their profitability. However, this technology has been understudied and is still not implemented on a large scale today. Moreover, mines with this technology generally burn the extracted methane i... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy storage systems, lead-carbon, lithium-ion, microgrid
This article addresses the development of the energy compensation method used for the design of hybrid energy storage systems—HBESS. The combination of two battery technologies offers better cost and performance when considering microgrid systems to provide uninterrupted power to sensitive loads (substation auxiliary system) and also provides greater energy security. In the event of a failure, the load needs to continue operating, and batteries such as lithium ions have a fast response, but are expensive for large-scale systems. However, some technologies offer low-cost and good availability of energy for long hours of discharge, such as lead−acid batteries. Consequently, different battery technologies can be used to meet all the needs of the sensitive loads. A specific method for sizing a HBESS was developed for islanded microgrids to support sensitive loads.
