An Investigation of Ultrasonic-Assisted Electrochemical Machining of Micro-Hole Array
Zhe-Yong Shen, Hai-Ping Tsui
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cavitation, electrochemical machining, micro-hole array, ultrasonic-assisted
This paper uses an ultrasonic vibration-integrated array electrode for 301 stainless steel micro-hole drilling. The influence of machining parameters such as ultrasonic vibration amplitude, working voltage, pulse-off time and electrode feed rate on different processing characteristics are discussed. The experimental results show that the ultrasonic-assisted electrode array vibrating generates a periodic pressure difference for the electrolyte. The periodic pressure difference forms a pumping effect and a cavitation effect. The two effects can effectively renew the electrolyte in the machining gap and discharge the reaction product, gas and reaction heat from the gap. Machining speed can be increased by over 500% when the ultrasonic amplitude increases from 0.94 μm to 2.87 μm. Micro-hole drilling with the optimum experimental parameter combination of ultrasonic amplitude 2.87 μm, working voltage 11 V, pulse-off time 50 μs and electrode feed rate 5 μm/s can result in a minimum average di... February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flowmeter, Natural Gas, PIV, tracer particles
When a PIV flowmeter is used to measure a large flow of natural gas, the flow field fluctuation and particle distribution have a significant influence on the measurement accuracy and the particle injection mode plays a key role in the flow field fluctuation and particle distribution. To improve the measurement accuracy of PIV flowmeters, the method of filling tracer particles in single pipes, multiple pipes, and L pipes of a natural gas DN100 pipeline under high-pressure working conditions was compared and analyzed through numerical calculation and testing. The results show that the disturbance distance of filling particles in L pipes was the shortest, but the particle distribution area was small, whereas the flow metering error was large. By shortening the intersection distance between the L tube injection flow field and the main flow field, the problem that the particles failed to fill the test area was effectively solved, and the peak turbulence intensity at the intersection of the... Keywords: biomass and sustainability, gas chromatograph, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, thermal analysis, thermochemical conversion, thermogravimetric analysers
An effective analytical technique for biomass characterisation is inevitable for biomass utilisation in energy production. To improve biomass processing, various thermal conversion methods such as torrefaction, pyrolysis, combustion, hydrothermal liquefaction, and gasification have been widely used to improve biomass processing. Thermogravimetric analysers (TG) and gas chromatography (GC) are among the most fundamental analytical techniques utilised in biomass thermal analysis. Thus, GC and TG, in combination with MS, FTIR, or two-dimensional analysis, were used to examine the key parameters of biomass feedstock and increase the productivity of energy crops. We can also determine the optimal ratio for combining two separate biomass or coals during co-pyrolysis and co-gasification to achieve the best synergetic relationship. This review discusses thermochemical conversion processes such as torrefaction, combustion, hydrothermal liquefaction, pyrolysis, and gasification. Then, the thermo... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bioenergy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, thermal degradation, thermogravimetric analysis, woody biomass
In order to utilize woody biomass effectively for bioenergy and chemical feedstocks, the comparative thermal degradation behaviors and kinetic mechanisms of typical hardwood (beech wood) and softwood (camphorwood) were studied at various heating rates in air. The Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose approach combined with the Coats-Redfern approach was employed to estimate the kinetic triplet. Softwood degradation began and ended at lower temperatures than hardwood. Compared with softwood, the maximal reaction rate of hardwood was greater and occurred in the higher temperature region. Two decomposition regions were determined by the variation of activation energy, and the dividing point was α = 0.6 and α = 0.65 for hardwood and softwood, respectively. Moreover, the average activation energy of hardwood was larger than that of softwood during the whole decomposition process. The thermal degradation process occurring in region 1 was dominated by the Avrami-Erofeev and 3D diffusion models for hardwoo... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: axial flow pump, model test, pressure pulsation, runaway process, wake vortex frequency
The runaway condition is a damage condition for pumps and turbines which can induce the wake vortex, reverse flow, and severe pressure pulsation. This study aimed to research the characteristics of pressure pulsation of axial flow pumps under different runaway conditions, and the runaway model test was performed with different blade angles and heads. Moreover, four pressure sensors were uniformly arranged at the impeller inlet section to eliminate the random error. The time domain and frequency domain analysis were the main methods to obtain the change regulations. Results showed that the pressure pulsation under the runaway condition are mainly influenced by the rotation frequency, blade passing frequency, and wake vortex frequency. The dimensionless pressure pulsation coefficient of rotation frequency and wake vortex frequency increased obviously with the runaway head increasing, but changed little with different blade angles. In addition, the dimensionless pressure coefficient of wa... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 mass transfer, electrochemical CO2 reduction, faradaic efficiency, hydrophobic zinc foam
Due to CO2 mass transfer limitation as well as the competition of hydrogen evolution reaction in electroreduction of CO2 in the aqueous electrolyte, Zn-based electrodes normally exhibit unsatisfying selectivity for CO production, especially at high potentials. In this work, we introduced a zinc myristate (Zn [CH3(CH2)12COO]2) hydrophobic layer on the surface of zinc foam electrode by an electrodeposition method. The obtained hydrophobic zinc foam electrode showed a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 91.8% for CO at −1.9 V (vs. saturated calomel electrode, SCE), which was a remarkable improvement over zinc foam (FECO = 81.87%) at the same potentials. The high roughness of the hydrophobic layer has greatly increased the active surface area and CO2 mass transfer performance by providing abundant gas-liquid-solid contacting area. This work shows adding a hydrophobic layer on the surface of the catalyst is an effective way to improve the electrochemical CO2 reduction performance.

Keywords: char, chemical structure, coal property, pyrolysis, Raman spectroscopy
The chemical structures of pyrolytic chars prepared from 32 kinds of Chinese coals were investigated with micro-Raman spectroscopy in this study. Both first-order and second-order Raman spectra of the chars were curve-fitted and analyzed. The effects of the parent coal properties, including coal rank, volatile, fixed carbon, and ash content, on the pyrolytic char structures were detailed discussed and the correlations between these coal properties and pyrolytic char chemical structures were set up. Multiple-factor analysis was done to propose a comprehensive coal property index that relates well to the pyrolytic char chemical structure. The results indicate that the aromatization degree is the key distinguishable structure of pyrolytic chars prepared from coals with various rank, and the alkyl C−H and aryl C−H structures have no significant difference. The aromatization degree of pyrolytic char decreases with the increase of coal rank, while it increases with the increase of the fixed... [more]

Keywords: corrosion, low-nickel stainless steel, passive film, underground water
Application of low-nickel stainless steel anchor was one of the economical and effective methods to solve the durability problem of slope engineering. At present, there are scarce reports about corrosion characteristics of low-nickel stainless steel in various underground waters. For investigating the corrosion initiation of stainless steel anchor bolt in corrosive underground water, the effect of SO42−, HCO3− and pH value on the corrosion behavior of 201 low-nickel stainless steel was studied via electrochemical methods. As the SO42− concentration, HCO3− concentration or pH value increase, the open circuit potential and polarization resistance increase, while the double-layer capacitance, donor density and passive current density decrease. The results indicate that corrosion is inhibited by SO42−, HCO3− and OH− in underground water. In addition, the inhibitive efficiency of SO42− and HCO3− increases with the SO42− and HCO3− concentration.

Keywords: Aquila Optimizer, Harris Hawks Optimizer, hybrid algorithm, nonlinear escaping energy parameter, random opposition-based learning
Aquila Optimizer (AO) and Harris Hawks Optimizer (HHO) are recently proposed meta-heuristic optimization algorithms. AO possesses strong global exploration capability but insufficient local exploitation ability. However, the exploitation phase of HHO is pretty good, while the exploration capability is far from satisfactory. Considering the characteristics of these two algorithms, an improved hybrid AO and HHO combined with a nonlinear escaping energy parameter and random opposition-based learning strategy is proposed, namely IHAOHHO, to improve the searching performance in this paper. Firstly, combining the salient features of AO and HHO retains valuable exploration and exploitation capabilities. In the second place, random opposition-based learning (ROBL) is added in the exploitation phase to improve local optima avoidance. Finally, the nonlinear escaping energy parameter is utilized better to balance the exploration and exploitation phases of IHAOHHO. These two strategies effectively... [more]

Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, energy decomposition, smart city, smart meter
The key advantage of smart meters over rotating-disc meters is their ability to transmit electric energy consumption data to power utilities’ remote data centers. Besides enabling the automated collection of consumers’ electric energy consumption data for billing purposes, data gathered by smart meters and analyzed through Artificial Intelligence (AI) make the realization of consumer-centric use cases possible. A smart meter installed in a domestic sector of an electrical grid and used for the realization of consumer-centric use cases is located at the entry point of a household/building’s electrical grid connection and can gather composite/circuit-level electric energy consumption data. However, it is not able to decompose its measured circuit-level electric energy consumption into appliance-level electric energy consumption. In this research, we present an AI model, a neuro-fuzzy classifier integrated with partitional clustering and metaheuristically optimized through parallel-comput... [more]

Keywords: battery swap service, battery swap station, frequency regulation service, idle batteries
Idle batteries in the battery swap stations (BSSs) of electric vehicles (EVs) can be used as regulated power sources. Considering the battery swap service and the frequency regulation (FR) service, this paper establishes a model of BSS cluster participating in the FR service and formulates a two-stage operation strategy. The day-ahead strategy arranges the battery charging plan and FR plan with the goal of the optimal operating economy on the next day. The intra-day strategy aims at maximizing the satisfaction degree of battery swap, minimizing the loss of planned revenue and ensuring the coordination of battery swap service and FR service by regulating the charging and discharging status of each battery in real-time. The simulation case shows that, under the prerequisite of gratifying the battery swap demand, the strategy improves the operating economy by making full use of idle batteries which bear a part in the FR service.

Keywords: corn, drying quality, energy consumption of drying, microwave drying
To identify the microwave drying characteristics of corn, microwave drying tests were conducted on corn. By taking the moisture content, drying rate, and drying temperature as indices, this research revealed the effects of different microwave powers and loads on the microwave drying characteristics of corn. Moreover, energy consumption and quality of dried corn were analysed under different drying conditions. The results demonstrate that microwave drying has significant energy-saving effects. The energy consumption by microwave drying is less than 0.3 times that used by electrothermal drying under the same load. Both microwave power and load exert significant influences on drying characteristics. Higher microwave power results in a greater average drying rate, wherein shorter periods of time are required to reach the maximum drying rate and higher temperatures of the corn. However, the load shows the opposite tendency. The smaller the load, the higher the temperature of the corn in the... [more]

Keywords: flat plate solar collector, flow mode transition, natural convection, numerical method, nusselt number
The natural convection flow in the air gap between the absorber plate and glass cover of the flat plate solar collectors is predominantly evaluated based on the lumped capacitance method, which does not consider the spatial temperature gradients. With the recent advancements in the field of computational fluid dynamics, it became possible to study the natural convection heat transfer in the air gap of solar collectors with spatially resolved temperature gradients in the laminar regime. However, due to the relatively large temperature gradient in this air gap, the natural convection heat transfer lies in either the transitional regime or in the turbulent regime. This requires a very high grid density and a large convergence time for existing CFD methods. Higher order numerical methods are found to be effective for resolving turbulent flow phenomenon. Here we develop a non-dimensional transient numerical model for resolving the turbulent natural convection heat transfer in the air gap of... [more]

Keywords: combustion efficiency, fluidized-bed combustor, heat transfer, perforated plate, thermal efficiency
Combustion efficiency is one of the most important parameters especially in the fluidized-bed combustor. Investigations into the efficiency of combustion in fluidized-bed combustor fuels using solid biomass waste fuels in recent years are increasingly in demand by researchers around the world. Specifically, this study aims to calculate the combustion efficiency in the fluidized-bed combustor. Combustion efficiency is calculated based on combustion results from the modification of hollow plates in the fluidized-bed combustor. The modified hollow plate aims to control combustion so that the fuel incorporated can burn out and not saturate. The combustion experiments were tested using palm oil biomass solid waste fuels such as palm kernel shell, oil palm midrib, and empty fruit bunches. The results of the measurements showed that the maximum combustion temperature for the palm kernel shell fuel reached 863 °C for M1 and 887 °C for M2. The maximum combustion temperature measurements for M1... [more]

Keywords: clearance discipline, numerical calculation, tip leakage flow, tubular turbine
To study the effect of tip clearance on unsteady flow in a tubular turbine, a full-channel numerical calculation was carried out based on the SST k−ω turbulence model using a power-plant prototype as the research object. Tip leakage flow characteristics of three clearance δ schemes were compared. The results show that the clearance value is directly proportional to the axial velocity, momentum, and flow sum of the leakage flow but inversely proportional to turbulent kinetic energy. At approximately 35−50% of the flow direction, velocity and turbulent kinetic energy of the leakage flow show the trough and peak variation law, respectively. The leakage vortex includes a primary tip leakage vortex (PTLV) and a secondary tip leakage vortex (STLV). Increasing clearance increases the vortex strength of both parts, as the STLV vortex core overlaps Core A of PTLV, and Core B of PTLV becomes the main part of the tip leakage vortex. A “right angle effect” causes flow separation on the pressure si... [more]

Keywords: biofuel, fluidized bed, poultry litter, Simulation, wet torrefaction
A numerical model for the wet torrefaction of poultry litter in a pilot unit was developed in this study. The model accounted for the following process steps: preheating biomass in a feed hopper, feeding biomass into the reactor, fluidized-bed generation using superheated steam, and the supply of additional heat by the electric heating of the reactor walls. Following a “black box” approach, a major assumption of the model is that the behavior of the fluidized-bed reactor is similar to a completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Under this assumption, the properties of the particles and gases do not depend on their location inside the reactor. During wet torrefaction, poultry-litter biomass was heated to a predetermined temperature and decomposed, generating biochar along with a gas phase (torgas), whose amounts depended on the content of inert ash in the biomass particles. Variable optimization in the model was performed using MATLAB software. The model successfully estimated the optimal... [more]

Keywords: anodic oxidation treatment, condensation heat transfer, nanotube membrane, thermosyphon heat pipes
This study mainly focuses on the influence of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) nanostructure generated on condenser section inner surface on the heat transfer performance of gravity heat pipes. AAO nanotubes were first grown by anodizing the inner wall surface of the condenser section of aluminum alloy gravity heat pipes through different anodizing voltages and treatment times. The nanostructure effect on the temperature distribution and overall thermal resistance was then investigated by using a thermal performance test system under different input heat powers. The experimental results showed that the generation of AAO nanostructure on the inner surface significantly enhances heat transfer performance; that is, the temperature difference between the evaporator and condenser sections and overall thermal resistance are reduced. Such an effect can be more significant in the case of a lower heat source. The percentage decreases in temperature difference and overall thermal resistance can be re... [more]

Keywords: electromagnetic force, permanent magnet synchronous generator, subdomain method, wave energy converter
This paper presents an electromagnetic analysis and experimental verification to optimize the noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) characteristics of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) for wave energy converters (WECs). WECs applicable to breakwater installed in island areas require a wider operating range and a robust design for maintenance compared with wind-turbine systems. Owing to the use of a permanent magnet with a high energy density, the PMSG has a higher power density than other types of generators; however, strong electromagnetic excitation forces that affect the NVH characteristics are generated. Therefore, in this study, the electromagnetic forces are analyzed through an electromagnetic-field analysis using a subdomain analytical method. Based on the analytical solution, electromagnetic forces were determined. Four electromagnetic excitation forces were classified, and the methods for reducing electromagnetic excitation forces are presented here. Finally, a m... [more]

Lithium sulfide (Li2S) is considered to be the best potential substitution for sulfur-based cathodes due to its high theoretical specific capacity (1166 mAh g−1) and good compatibility with lithium metal-free anodes. However, the electrical insulation nature of Li2S and severe shuttling of lithium polysulfides lead to poor rate capability and cycling stability. Confining Li2S into polar conductive porous carbon is regarded as a promising strategy to solve these problems. In this work, N-doped porous carbon microspheres (NPCMs) derived from yeasts are designed and synthesized as a host to confine Li2S. Nano Li2S is successfully entered into the NPCMs’ pores to form N-doped porous carbon microspheres−Li2S composite (NPCMs−Li2S) by a typical liquid infiltration−evaporation method. NPCMs−Li2S not only delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 1077 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1, but also displays good rate capability of 198 mAh g−1 at 5.0 A g−1 and long-term lifespan over 500 cycles.
