Heat Transfer Enhancement of Indirect Heat Transfer Reactors for Ca(OH)2/CaO Thermochemical Energy Storage System
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Ca(OH)2/CaO, heat transfer enhancement, thermochemical energy storage
The efficiency of a thermochemical energy storage system can be improved by optimizing the structure of the thermochemical energy storage reactor. We proposed two modified structures for indirect heat transfer thermochemical energy storage reactors for a Ca(OH)2/CaO system to improve their heat transfer performance. Our results showed that improving convective heat transfer offered varying effects on heat transfer performance in different reaction processes. For a half-plate pin fin sinks (HPPFHS) reactor and a plate pin fin sinks (PPFHS) reactor, enhancing the convective heat transfer process could improve the heat transfer performance in the dehydration process for a porosity of 0.5, and the time needed to complete reaction was reduced by around 33% compared with plate fin sinks (PFHS) reactor. As for the hydration process, because heat conduction along the bed dominated heat transfer performance, this method had little effect. Furthermore, we found that enhancing heat conduction alo... Effects of Different Diesel-Ethanol Dual Fuel Ratio on Performance and Emission Characteristics of Diesel Engine
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: AVL-Fire, diesel engine, Diesel-ethanol dual fuel, Fuzzy grey correlation
In this paper, a four-stroke engine diesel was employed to investigate the effects of different fuel mixture ratios of diesel and ethanol on engine performance and emission characteristics in terms of cylinder temperature, heat release rate, brake power, brake thermal efficiency, brake specific fuel consumption, and cylinder pressure. The corresponding simulation model of diesel engine was developed by AVL-Fire coupled CHEMKIN code, and an improved chemical kinetics mechanism containing 34 reactions and 19 species was employed to simulate the fuel spray process and combustion process. The simulation model was validated by experimental results under 100% and 50% load conditions and used to simulate the combustion process of diesel engine fueled with pure diesel and diesel−ethanol blends with 10%, 20%, and 30% ethanol by volume, respectively. The results showed that the increase of ethanol content in the blended fuel had a certain negative impact on the performance characteristic of dies... [more]

An Improved Bald Eagle Search Algorithm for Parameter Estimation of Different Photovoltaic Models
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: commercial silicon solar cell, improved bald eagle search, photovoltaic energy, single, triple photovoltaic models
Clean energy resources have become a worldwide concern, especially photovoltaic (PV) energy. Solar cell modeling is considered one of the most important issues in this field. In this article, an improvement for the search steps of the bald eagle search algorithm is proposed. The improved bald eagle search (IBES) was applied to estimate more accurate PV model parameters. The IBES algorithm was applied for conventional single, double, and triple PV models, in addition to modified single, double, and triple PV models. The IBES was evaluated by comparing its results with the original BES through 15 benchmark functions. For a more comprehensive analysis, two evaluation tasks were performed. In the first task, the IBES results were compared with the original BES for parameter estimation of original and modified tribe diode models. In the second task, the IBES results were compared with different recent algorithms for parameter estimation of original and modified single and double diode model... [more]

A New Approach to Solar Desalination Using a Humidification−Dehumidification Process for Remote Areas
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: humidification–dehumidification, solar desalination, solar energy, storage tank
Freshwater supply in remote areas has become a critical issue. This paper aims to introduce a new approach to a solar-powered humidification−dehumidification (HDH) desalination system. The design uses a solar collector, a thermal storage tank, and an HDH unit. The HDH works continuously by feeding water to absorb solar energy during the day and then relaying the desalination units with feed water at a top brine temperature (TBT) at night. The model predicts the amount of solar energy stored for the next day, and based on this, the amount of feed water that should be raised to the TBT is calculated. The system operation is carried out in two phases. During the day, the feed water absorbs the heat of solar energy, thereby increasing its temperature to TBT. This hot feed water is then kept in storage tanks. At night, the tank switches to discharging mode and starts feeding the HDH with the hot feed water. The system is designed so that the roles of the tank are rotated at sunset. To achie... [more]

Novel High-Efficiency High Step-Up DC−DC Converter with Soft Switching and Low Component Voltage Stress for Photovoltaic System
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: photovoltaic (PV) systems, step-up DC–DC converter, three-winding coupled inductor, voltage doubler circuit
This study developed a novel, high-efficiency, high step-up DC−DC converter for photovoltaic (PV) systems. The converter can step-up the low output voltage of PV modules to the voltage level of the inverter and is used to feed into the grid. The converter can achieve a high step-up voltage through its architecture consisting of a three-winding coupled inductor common iron core on the low-voltage side and a half-wave voltage doubler circuit on the high-voltage side. The leakage inductance energy generated by the coupling inductor during the conversion process can be recovered by the capacitor on the low-voltage side to reduce the voltage surge on the power switch, which gives the power switch of the circuit a soft-switching effect. In addition, the half-wave voltage doubler circuit on the high-voltage side can recover the leakage inductance energy of the tertiary side and increase the output voltage. The advantages of the circuit are low loss, high efficiency, high conversion ratio, and... [more]

FPGA-Based Implementation of an Optimization Algorithm to Maximize the Productivity of a Microbial Electrolysis Cell
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: FPGA, golden section search, hydrogen production, MEC, online optimization, super-twisting controller
In this work, the design of the hardware architecture to implement an algorithm for optimizing the Hydrogen Productivity Rate (HPR) in a Microbial Electrolysis Cell (MEC) is presented. The HPR in the MEC is maximized by the golden section search algorithm in conjunction with a super-twisting controller. The development of the digital architecture in the implementation step of the optimization algorithm was developed in the Very High Description Language (VHDL) and synthesized in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Numerical simulations demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed optimization strategy embedded in an FPGA Cyclone II. Results showed that only 21% of the total logic elements, 5.19% of dedicated logic registers, and 64% of the total eight-bits multipliers of the FPGA were used. On the other hand, the estimated power consumption required by the FPGA-embedded optimization algorithm was only 146 mW.

Depolymerization and Hydrogenation of Organosolv Eucalyptus Lignin by Using Nickel Raney Catalyst
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: catalytic conversion, Hydrogen, lignin
The use of lignocellulosic biomass to obtain biofuels and chemicals produces a large amount of lignin as a byproduct. Lignin valorization into chemicals needs efficient conversion processes to be developed. In this work, hydrocracking of organosolv lignin was performed by using nickel Raney catalyst. Organosolv lignin was obtained from the pretreatment of eucalyptus wood at 170 °C for 1 h by using 1/100/100 (w/v/v) ratio of biomass/oxalic acid solution (0.4% w/w)/1-butanol. The resulting organic phase of lignin in 1-butanol was used in hydrogenation tests. The conversion of lignin was carried out with a batch reactor equipped with a 0.3 L vessel with adjustable internal stirrer and heat control. The reactor was pressurized at 5 bar with hydrogen at room temperature, and then the temperature was raised to 250 °C and kept for 30 min. Operative conditions were optimized to achieve high conversion in monomers and to minimize the loss of solvent. At the best performance conditions, about 10... [more]

Dancing with Bubbles: Deterministic versus Probabilistic Bubble Models in Dense Phase Sand Fluidized Beds for Biomass Gasification
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bubble rise velocity, bubbling fluidized bed, CREC optical fiber probe, gasification, probabilistic predictive model, sand fluidization
This study addresses the need to model bubble flow in a fluidized bed using a probabilistic approach, which includes intrinsic bubble flow randomness. It is shown that the proposed probabilistic predictive model (PPM) overcomes the limitations of deterministic correlations, commonly used to describe bubble dynamics in high-density (above 2000 kg/m3) sand-beds of Type B particles of the Geldart classification. It is proven that a PPM can describe the relationship between bubble axial chord and bubble rise velocity using minimum and maximum behavioral bands. This probabilistic model, which applies to a wide range of operating conditions, as shown in the present study, can be considered applicable to single bubbles injected at incipient fluidization, as well as to bubbly beds with and without loaded biomass pellets.

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: finite element method, magnetic dipole, micropolar ferromagnetic fluid, nanofluid, thermal radiation
An analysis for magnetic dipole with stagnation point flow of micropolar nanofluids is modeled for numerical computation subject to thermophoresis, multi buoyancy, injection/suction, and thermal radiation. The partial derivative is involved in physical consideration, which is transformed to format of ordinary differential form with the aid of similarity functions. The variational finite element procedure is harnessed and coded in Matlab script to obtain the numerical solution of the coupled non-linear ordinary differential problem. The fluid temperature, velocity, tiny particles concentration, and vector of micromotion are studied for two case of buoyancy (assisting 0λ) through finite-element scheme. The velocity shows decline against the rising of ferromagnetic interaction parameter (β) (assisting 0λ), while the inverse behaviour is noted in micro rotation profile. Growing the thermo-phoresis and microrotation parameters receded the rate of heat transfer remarkable, and micromotion an... [more]

The Zinc-Air Battery Performance with Ni-Doped MnO2 Electrodes
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bi-functional electrode, manganese, Ni-doping, Zinc-air battery
A rechargeable zinc-air battery shows great promise because of its high energy density, low cost, greater safety, and its environment-friendly properties. However, rechargeable zinc-air battery development has been hindered by the lack of a satisfactory bi-functional electrode. In this research, we report on a solution which uses electro-deposition to dope nickel into manganese on the stainless-steel mesh. The result shows the hydroxyl group on the prepared samples improving its oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction performance, as well as boosting the ion diffusion rate and stabilizing the zinc-air battery charge-discharge performance (overall potential gap dropped from 0.84 V to 0.82 V after 1000 cycles). This study contributes to our understanding of a new method for the improvement of bi-functional electrodes.

Investigating the Impact of Economic Uncertainty on Optimal Sizing of Grid-Independent Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economic uncertainty, electricity and heat co-generation, hydrogen-based boiler, hydrogen-based fuel cell, standalone hybrid renewable-based systems
One of the many barriers to decarbonization and decentralization of the energy sector in developing countries is the economic uncertainty. As such, this study scrutinizes economics of three grid-independent hybrid renewable-based systems proposed to co-generate electricity and heat for a small-scale load. Accordingly, the under-study systems are simulated and optimized with the aid of HOMER Pro software. Here, a 20-year average value of discount and inflation rates is deemed a benchmark case. The techno-economic-environmental and reliability results suggest a standalone solar/wind/electrolyzer/hydrogen-based fuel cell integrated with a hydrogen-based boiler system is the best alternative. Moreover, to ascertain the impact of economic uncertainty on optimal unit sizing of the nominated model, the fluctuations of the nominal discount rate and inflation, respectively, constitute within the range of 15−20% and 10−26%. The findings of economic uncertainty analysis imply that total net prese... [more]

Experimental Investigation on the DPF High-Temperature Filtration Performance under Different Particle Loadings and Particle Deposition Distributions
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deposition distribution, diesel particulate filter, high-temperature filtration, particle loading
Based on DPF filtration and regeneration bench, the solid particle emission and high-temperature filtration characteristics of different carbon black particle loadings and particle deposition distributions are studied. The aerosol generator (PAlAS RGB 1000) is used to introduce carbon black particles into the inlet of a DPF, and the NanoMet3 particle meter is used to measure the solid particle concentration at the inlet and outlet of a DPF to obtain the filtration characteristics. Previous studies found that without inlet carbon black particles, there was an obvious solid particle emission peak at the outlet of the deposited DPF during the heating, and the concentration increased by 1−2 orders of magnitude. In this paper, the high-temperature filtration characteristics under steady-state temperature conditions are studied. It is found that a DPF can reduce the range of inlet fluctuating particles, and with the increase of temperature, the proportion of large solid particles in the outl... [more]

Estimating the Remaining Useful Life of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells under Variable Loading Conditions Online
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: health indicator, particle filter, prognostics, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, remaining useful life
The major challenges for the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are durability and cost. Prognostics and health management technology enable appropriate decisions and maintenance measures by estimating the current state of health and predicting the degradation trend, which can help extend the life and reduce the maintenance costs of PEMFCs. This paper proposes an online model-based prognostics method to estimate the degradation trend and the remaining useful life of PEMFCs. A non-linear empirical degradation model is proposed based on an aging test, then three degradation state variables, including degradation degree, degradation speed and degradation acceleration, can be estimated online by the particle filter algorithm to predict the degradation trend and remaining useful life. Moreover, a new health indicator is proposed to replace the actual variable loading conditions with the simulated constant loading conditions. Test results using actual aging dat... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: antibiotic resistance gene, hydroponic, lettuce, phytotoxic, sulfadiazine
The research herein explored the possible mechanism of toxicity of the antibiotic sulfadiazine (SD) and the related antibiotic resistance gene transformation in lettuce by systematically investigating its growth responses, ultrastructural changes, and antibiotic resistance gene transformation via solution culture experiments. The results showed that SD mainly accumulated in the roots of lettuce at concentrations ranging from 6.48 to 120.87 μg/kg, which were significantly higher than those in leaves (3.90 to 16.74 μg/kg). Lower concentrations of SD (0.5 and 2.0 mg/L) in the culture nutrient solution exerted little effect on lettuce growth, while at SD concentrations higher than 10 mg/L, the growth of lettuce was significantly inhibited, manifesting as shorter root length and lower dry matter yield of whole lettuce plants. Thermogravimetric Analysis of Coal Semi-Char Co-Firing with Straw in O2/CO2 Mixtures
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, co-firing, kinetic analysis, oxy-fuel, semi-char, thermogravimetric analysis
For coal semi-char as a by-produced of low-temperature pyrolysis, combustion for power generation is one of the effective utilization methods to realize its clean and efficient utilization. However, the coal semi-char combustion process has a difficult ignition, unstable combustion and low burnout rate. The co-firing of the semi-char with biomass under oxy-fuel conditions can improve the combustion behavior and reduce fossil CO2 emissions. In this paper, the combustion behavior of Shenhua coal semi-char (SHC) co-firing with straw (ST) in O2/CO2 mixture is investigated using thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that each curve lays between those of the individual fuels and presents three peaks (i.e., three stages). The thermogravimetric curves of SHC co-firing with ST can be divided into three stages: the volatile combustion of ST, the co-combustion of SHC and ST fixed-carbons and the SHC fixed-carbon combustion and the decomposition of the difficult pyrolytic material of ST. Combustion Instability of Swirl Premixed Flame with Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion instability, flame transfer function, free radicals, plasma, premixed swirl flame
The effects of plasma on the combustion instability of a methane swirling premixed flame under acoustic excitation were investigated. The flame image of OH planar laser-induced fluorescence and the fluctuation of flame transfer function showed the mechanism of plasma in combustion instability. The results show that when the acoustic frequency is less than 100 Hz, the gain in flame transfer function gradually increases with the frequency; when the acoustic frequency is 100~220 Hz, the flame transfer function shows a trend of first decreasing and then increasing with acoustic frequency. When the acoustic frequency is greater than 220 Hz, the flame transfer function gradually decreases with acoustic frequency. When the voltage exceeds the critical discharge value of 5.3 kV, the premixed gas is ionized and the heat release rate increases significantly, thereby reducing the gain in flame transfer function and enhancing flame stability. Analysis of Channel Vortex and Cavitation Performance of the Francis Turbine under Partial Flow Conditions
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cavitation, cavitation erosion, channel vortex, Francis turbine, LES, partial flow conditions
To realize a multienergy complementary system involving hydropower and other energy sources, hydraulic turbines frequently run under partial flow conditions in which a unique flow phenomenon, the channel vortex, occurs in the runner, causing fatigue failure and even cavitation to the turbine blade. Cavitation severely shortens the service life of the unit and terribly limits the output of the turbine under partial flow conditions. In this paper, a numerical model of a Francis turbine was created with tetrahedral grids; the large eddy simulation (LES) method based on the WALE subgrid scale model and the Schnerr−Sauer cavitation model was adopted to carry out numerical simulation of the Francis turbine; and a vortex identification method based on the Q criterion was used to capture and analyze the channel vortex. The calculation results showed that a negative impact angle at the inlet of the runner occurred when the turbine ran under partial flow conditions, leading to three different ty... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy–economic–safety aspects, ethyl acetate, heat pump, process integration and intensification, Reactive Distillation
Multi-objective (energy−economic−safety) assessment of ethyl acetate production involving a heat pump is presented in this paper. The heat pump is designed to intensify ethyl acetate separation and to reduce the total operating cost. Two ethyl acetate production pathways are upgraded using a heat pump, conventional process and reactive distillation column with a separation unit. Detailed process models including the heat pump environment have been compiled and optimized in the Aspen Plus software. Both benefits and drawbacks of including the heat pump in the processes are evaluated using three different points of view: process energy, economics, and safety. As a result, using a heat pump is highly recommended in both conventional process and reactive distillation column with a separation unit. As a higher level of process integration is achieved using a heat pump, economic aspects are improved; however, safety aspects deteriorate. The final decision on the suitability of using a heat p... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: eccentricity factor, heat transfer, Kenics static mixer, non-standard static mixer, structure-function relationship
The Kenics static mixer is one of the most widely studied static mixers, whose structure−function relationship has been studied by varying its aspect ratio and modifying the surface. However, the effect of the symmetric structure of the Kenics static mixer itself on twisting the fluid has been neglected. In order to study how the symmetrical structure of the Kenics static mixer impacts the fluid flow, we changed the center position of elements at twist angle 90° and introduced the eccentricity factor γ. We applied LHS-PLS to study this non-standard Kenics static mixer and obtained the statistical correlations of the aspect ratio, Reynolds number, and eccentricity factor on relative Nusselt number and relative friction factor. We analyzed the results by comparing the PLS model with the univariate analysis, and it was found that the underlying logic of the Kenics static mixer with an asymmetric structure became different.
